Frankie takes council to
school on need for buses

FRANKIE HINDSON is on a
mission to make a difference in
her community.
The Tai Tapu School pupil
presented a speech about the
lack of public transport in
Selwyn to councillors at their
meeting last week, and received
a positive response from those
listening.
Frankie, 11, wrote her speech
a few months ago after she was
nominated by her school to
compete in the Speaking 4 the
Planet competition.
She chose the topic because
Tai Tapu does not have access to
any public transport.
“There’s none. We have to take
our car everywhere.
“If we did have public buses
and other public transport, we’d
probably use that quite a lot.”
Frankie had asked the
Speaking 4 the Planet
competition audience if they
wanted their children and
future generations to have the
opportunity to see an elephant
when they grew up.
If they did, they’d need to start
being more conscious about
how their choices affect the
environment.

ROLLESTON RSA has expelled its
first president after he was accused
of wearing medals to which he was
not entitled.
Bruce Blackburn was president of
the branch when it was established
in 2022 and appeared in photos at
public events wearing medals he
was allegedly not entitled to.

Skevington said the initiative
started about a year ago, after
he and other AA councillors
became concerned at the
number of cyclists riding at
night without proper lighting.
“No one wants to go to their
own kid’s funeral . . . We’ve seen
(the scheme) in action, we’ve
seen the children using them.”

He said children were small
and hard to see, so anything
that made them more visible
on the roads was a great
initiative.

NEW SIGN-OFF FOR
COUNCIL PROJECTS
The council has streamlined its
processes for approving project
spending. In a report to council,
chief executive Sharon Mason
said financial delegations were
structured in a way that was
not easy to identify who could
approve projects, and for how
much. Under the new delegations,
the chief executive has the power
to sign off projects up to the value
of $3 million where the project
has been approved through a long
term or annual plan.
SHED DESTROYED IN FIRE
The cause of a shed fire which
took three brigades about four
hours to extinguish has yet to
be determined. Brigades from
Leeston, Southbridge, and
Dunsandel responded to the High
St, Leeston, fire about 11.30am
on Friday. Leeston fire chief
Matt Walker said the shed was
about 40sq m in size and had a
workshop inside.

A car driving along SH73 caught
fire and set scrub alight near Lake
Lyndon last week. Springfield fire
chief Grant Williams said the
driver was uninjured and the
20sq m scrub fire contained
quickly. He said the cause of the
car fire was not yet known. The
brigade was also called to a single
motorbike crash on Porters Pass
last week, which left the rider with
minor injuries.

AN ONLINE poll has shown
support for a regional fuel tax
and toll roads being used to fill
funding shortfalls in transport
budgets, rather than rates.
The starnews.co.nz poll showed
the majority of about 1000
respondents supported road
tolls (44 per cent), slightly less
supported a regional fuel tax (40
per cent) with the remainder (16
per cent) saying council rates
should cover the bills.
The idea was floated by Mayor
Sam Broughton after it was
revealed Selwyn’s transport
budget would have a $36 million
hole in it after a cut in New
Zealand Transport Agency
funding allocated in the 2024-
27 National Land Transport
Programme which the council
applies to every three years.
Of the $36 million shortfall,
$27 million was earmarked for
projects including intersection
upgrades, school safety
upgrades, and public transport
infrastructure. The remaining $9
million was to be used for road
maintenance.
Council is due to meet this
week to discuss what direction
it will take on the unfunded
projects.
While it is unlikely any changes
could be made for this cycle,
Broughton proposed the idea of a
regional fuel tax or road tolls to be

“If the Government cannot
fund their share of the infrastructure
upgrades Canterbury needs,
then we need other solutions for
where that funding is going to
come from.
“A regional fuel tax or a consideration
of toll roads are just
options that New Zealand needs
to have a conversation about.
Otherwise, it’s simply pushing the
problem off onto ratepayers to pay
more,” Broughton said.

of funding in the NLTP, the
lowest amount per capita of all
regions.
Broughton told councillors last
week much of the funding had
been agreed to in principle, and
it was disappointing to see the
money pulled.
“We spent the last six months
talking with our community
through our Long Term Plan
about doing those projects.
“It is going to be very disappointing
for many of the projects
because we just can’t afford to
do them without some serious
changes in rating levels or new
income streams.”
In 2018, an Environment
Canterbury report estimated that
a regional fuel tax of 10 cents a
litre would bring in an additional
$100 million to pay for regional
roading projects.

Ex-Auckland
water chief
joins CORDE
A FORMER Auckland Watercare
chief executive who resigned
during a water supply crisis has
been appointed as a director on the
CORDE board.
Raveen Jaduram served as Watercare’s
chief executive from 2014
to 2020 when he resigned during
drought conditions which caused a
water supply crisis.
He told RNZ at the time questions
about his $780,000 salary was
one of the reasons
for his resignation.

When Selwyn Times visited
Blackburn at his Rolleston home
he referred questions to his lawyer.
When asked for his lawyer’s
name and contact details, Blackburn
declined to
provide them.
“I have no comment.
Everything
is with my lawyer
at the moment,
I’m not supposed
to talk to anybody.
“There is some
information that Ian Martyn
has been taken
out of context and there has been
some information from defence
records which is a breach of
privacy.”
Richards said that was incorrect.
He said the RSA had spoken to
people who knew Blackburn,
along with checking the medal
qualifying criteria to see if
Martyn’s allegations were valid.
Prior to the RSA hearing,
Blackburn had issued an apology
on his private Facebook page,
he said that “embellishment of
any type is unacceptable in any
field. I have made a grave error of
judgement + unreservabley [sic]
apologize for my stupidity”.
Under the RSA’s constitution,
Blackburn has until October 5 to
appeal the organisation’s decision
to expel him. He would not say

transport introduced in her
town so she wouldn’t have to
rely on her parents’ car and have
the ability to gain independence.
Frankie got second place in
the year seven category, and
was approached by Sustainable
Ōtautahi Christchurch chair
Colleen Phillips who suggested
she put her speech to council.
Frankie said she was quite
nervous before going in, but
felt better after receiving words
of encouragement from Mayor
Sam Broughton and councillor
Phil Dean.
“They were really nice and
that got rid of most of my
nerves, but I still felt nervous
because they were all quite older
than me.”
After she spoke, Frankie was
then asked questions and was

to Frankie, so she was also
feeling the nerves.
“Once she got into it, she was
awesome, I was super proud of
how she handled herself and
spoke.
“It makes you proud that
they’re willing to get out of
their comfort zone and put
themselves out there and do it.”
Frankie’s speech comes as
Ellesmere residents continue to
fight for the return of the 87 bus
route between Southbridge and
Lincoln.
Enviro Ellesmere has taken up
the cause, and had a community
meeting with Ellesmere Ward
councillor Elizabeth Mundt
and ECan last month to discuss
transport alternatives.

A PROMINENT developer
in the district says the council
has been reluctant to maintain
existing trees in new property
developments.

Hughes said a lot more can be
done to incorporate trees in new
subdivisions.
“In my experience, there is a
strong reluctance from council to
retain existing mature trees within
new developments.
“The message we are continuously
receiving from council is
they see mature trees as a maintenance
burden they don’t have the
budget for,” Hughes said.
His comments come as the
council is asking for public feedback
on how it should manage
trees in the district.
In a briefing on the new policy
Mayor Sam Broughton said it
was a shame towns like Rolleston,
much of which is greenfield development,
do not have a tree canopy.
“Trees out-survive people so the
trees we plant today should be here
for generations to come and in a
new town like Rolleston I think it’s
a real shame we don’t have much
of a tree canopy cover,” he said.
In response to Hughes, a council
spokesperson said it has to consider
the cost to ratepayers versus
the wider benefit.
In the briefing, council staff
pointed out instances where the
council’s policy on tree removal
and replacement was unclear.
One highlighted example was
Markham Way in Rolleston where
trees were removed to make way
for a footpath.

a bit of a concrete jungle.
“We do need trees and suitable
trees,” Wood said.
The council is now updating
its tree policy to develop clearer
guidelines on the removal, replacement
and protection of trees
based on the Christchurch City
Council’s tree policy which is seen
as industry best practice.
Hughes said he would support
the retention of mature trees, but
said it should be at the developer’s
discretion not the council’s.
He supports the retention of
trees if they are located within
areas earmarked for recreational
reserves or road reserves and did
not impact the commercial viability
of the development.
To solve the lack of trees
Broughton suggested council develop
a system by which residents
can get discounted trees to plant
on their berms.
“We have nearly 40,000 rateable
units. Imagine if we could get
50,000 trees planted in our townships
across the district over the
next three planting seasons.
“I think we need a step change
in our approach to encourage
tree planting in our communities
beyond just the reserves and the
large gatherings of native plantings
that were traditionally done,”
Broughton said.
Springs Ward councillor Grant
Miller was cautious of Broughton’s
idea. He said it would end up with
unsuitable trees planted in the
wrong places.
Model for
improved
community
funding
approved

A NEW community funding
structure is now in place.
Council staff said the new approach
for community funding was
designed to improve transparency,
strategic decision-making, efficiency
and effectiveness.
The changes which were signed
off at last week’s council meeting
included the development of an
assessment panel for allocating contestable
funds, the disestablishment
and establishment of funds and
minor changes to fund names.
The Ward Discretionary Fund
was disestablished. The $86,000 per
annum fund was transferred to the
new Individuals and Teams Fund
($53,000) and the Community
Fund ($33,000).
Resident groups will have $24,000
split between them, with each
receiving up to $1000.
The council will not fund more
than one recognised resident group
in an area. If more than one group
applies for an area, they will be
encouraged to find a way to work
together.

Annual CultureFest proves popular

ABOUT 5500 people attended
the annual CultureFest event on
Sunday.
More than 50 different cultures
and countries were represented at
the Lincoln Event Centre festival,
through a wide variety of stalls
and performances.
Council senior advisor for
community events Maria Flower
said while it would be unfair
to pinpoint standout stalls,
there were some that were very
popular.
“There was a beautiful
Brazilian barbecue there for
the first time. Others who had
returned, like the Ukrainian
stores, were selling their food and
also providing some crafts and
entertainment for the little ones.
“Everyone was just so great.
We had so many different
nationalities and countries and
they were all doing a really good
job.”
Flower said it took the council
three to four months to organise
the event, which was a hit with
attendees.
“Everyone loves these events.
“People come there to have fun,
to enjoy, to meet other family
and friends, just to be together.
Everyone’s pretty happy, lots of
smiles around.”

win gold,

NI champs
TWO ICE skating siblings
from Lincoln excelled at the
North Island championships in
Auckland at the weekend.
Eva Smith, 16, won bronze in
the juvenile girls grade while
younger brother Hunter, 14, won
gold in the basic novice boys
competition.
The duo were competing as a
part of the Centaurus Ice Skating
Club teamCentaurus took home
five golds and two bronzes.
The siblings have both qualified
for the national championships, to
be hosted by Centaurus at Alpine
Ice Sports Centre in Christchurch
from October 17-20.
Kapa haka group
does school proud
Rolleston College’s kapa
haka group competed
at the Tūhono kapa haka
festival on Sunday.
Twenty-six students
took part in the
competition at the
Christchurch Town Hall.
The group spent five
weeks preparing, and
were up against 15 other
schools in the year 9-13
division. Christchurch
Girls’ High School won
the division.
Said teacher matua
Jason Keno: “(The
students) showed mana
(pride), aroha (love)
and kōtahitanga (unity)
throughout, and although
they didn’t win, whānau
were so proud of how
they performed building
mana within our kura,
their whānau and of
course themselves.”
The group’s next
performance will be
at the school’s haka
competition, as part of Te
Wiki o Te reo Māori.
Junior
rotarians
movie
night a
success
FRIDAY THE 13th was a night
to remember as the Rolleston
Junior Rotarians ran their firstever
event.
About 50 nine-to-13 year olds
attended the free movie night at
Rolleston College.
Rolleston Rotary Club member
Kate Webb said the young rotarians,
led junior leaders Charlotte
Trinnaman, Laylah Trinnaman
and Charlotte White put in hours
of effort to make the evening
special.
The group provided popcorn,
lollies and drinks for the attendees
to enjoy while watching
Hocus Pocus 2 on the big screen.
Webb said some kids came
dressed in onesies and PJs,
adding to the cozy, laid-back
atmosphere.

the line in pursuit of a wheel of
cheese at Broken River Ski Area
on Saturday.
Organiser and ski area vice
president Matt Barnes said fresh
snow and big crowds made for a
memorable fourth annual Barrys
Bay Cheese Roll.
“It’s a fun event for everyone,
with everyone having a hilarious
time. There was much laughter
from the sideline as they
watched participants run, slide
and roll down the snow slope,”
he said.
The aim was to chase the large
5kg round of cheese down the
slope, with the winner the first
to catch it.
Participants were encouraged
to dress up, with spot prizes for
the best dressed.
Every year the registration
donation goes to a worthy cause.

Rates rise too much:

regarding our huge rate rises.
The comments by council
acting chief executive officer
Steve Gibling states rates rises are
in line with other councils. How
is that an excuse to increase rates
drastically beyond the rate of
inflation?
With the recent 14.9 per cent
rates increase this year – and
forecasted double-digit rate rises
over the next three years – many
people will be unable to afford
to fund council goals; what then
for those who rely on council’s
integrity to meet their most basic
of needs – affordability?
Most people budget differently,
choosing to select projects on
the basis of need and affordability
from known household
income. Often, items on the wish
list are deferred indefinitely or
even abandoned due to the cost.
Sadly, council finance people
and elected members do their
accounting using quite different
methodology.

The future is shaping up for Waikirikiri Ki Tua
Future Selwyn following your feedback.
The Council has completed deliberations and
is finalising Waikirikiri Ki Tua Future Selwyn –
which sets a vision for the future of the district.
Thank you to the many thousands of people
who viewed the strategy online at
www.selwyn.govt.nz/future over the five
weeks of public consultation, as well as to
the 112 people who submitted feedback on
the plan and the 19 people and organisations
spoke at public hearings.
The feedback we received was hugely valuable
to helping shape the final Waikirikiri Ki Tua
Future Selwyn, Mayor Sam Broughton says.
The shape of our towns and how we allow
growth while protecting rural land was a
common theme from people who submitted,
along with how we get around the district.
There was widespread support for curbing
urban sprawl, along with a focus on better
public transport and demand for more walking
and cycling options in the district.
“While people overall supported the strategy
there are areas where people wanted
adjustments, and we will be finalising those in
the coming weeks.”
Waikirikiri Ki Tua Future Selwyn is expected to
be adopted in late October with the focus then
shifting to how it works in your town or area
through an area plan.
“Over summer, we’ll be getting out around the
community, looking to hear from you about
what you like about your town, what you don’t
like, and what you’d like to see more of. We
have heard from people that this is something
they are keen to be involved in. It’s an exciting
time for people to really think about and shape
the vision for their town and work on building
that future together,” Mayor Broughton says.

Host of sports
on show at
Koru Games

YOUNG ATHLETES from across
the South Island will descend on
the district next week for the 11th
Koru Games.
The Selwyn Sports Trust started
the games in 2014 as a way to
provide South Island pupils in year
7 and 8 the opportunity to compete
in a multi-day, multi-sport event
– similar to the Aims Games, held
annually in Tauranga.
The opening ceremony takes
place at the Selwyn Sports Centre at
Foster Park on Tuesday at 9.30am
before the teams split off and head
to their respective locations.
Badminton, basketball, boccia,
table tennis and wheelchair basketball
will be held at the centre with
football, hockey, kī-o-rahi, touch
rugby and ultimate frisbee at Foster
Park.
Dodgeball, korfball and
volleyball are at Lincoln University,
while rippa rugby is at Lincoln
Domain, pickleball at the Lincoln
Event Centre, netball at the Selwyn
Netball Centre in Lincoln and lawn
bowls at the Lincoln Bowling Club.
The games run from Tuesday to
Thursday with most sports played
simultaneously across the three
days. Boccia and wheelchair basketball
are one-day tournaments due
to space restrictions.

TWO OF LAST season’s Ellesmere
champions headline the Lincoln
Bowling Club’s under 8s pairs
competition on Sunday – with
$1000 on the line.
Southbridge youngster Reuben
Quilter, who at 14 became the
youngest person to win an Ellesmere
champion of champions
event when he took out the men’s
colts single competition in March,
is teaming up with his father Ian.
Tai Tapu’s Gill Bolderston will
also be among the favourites.
Bolderston was a part of the triples
team that won the Ellesmere
champion of champions and also
made the singles final. She will
team up with Wendy Toohey for
the under 8s competition.
Four of Lincoln’s five representatives
in last year’s Canterbury
development squad will also be
on show – Steven Bryce, Simon
Moriarty, Shannon Keoghan and
Jayne McKay.
The club is offering $1000 in
prize money, with $500 going to
the winners, $200 to the runnersup
and $100 to third place. The rest
of the money will go to spot prizes
on the day.

praised the popularity of this year’s
event – while the tournament was
Lincoln and Ellesmere-focused, it
was open to anyone – with teams
from as far afield as Papanui, Allenton
and Oxford taking part.
“The brief was initially to give
Lincoln people the first strike at it,
Ellesmere the second strike, and
once we had gone through those
two strikes, it then went out to
about eight other clubs we knew
had juniors in them,” Smith said.
The competition starts at 10am.

‘It’s just so emotional
every time he races. It’s
happy sad.’ – Sue Szabo
and the love
story behind
the name

ZOLTAN BOSCIK is a trotter
on the rise. Trained by Jeff and
Luke Whittaker, the talented
four-year-old has created quite
the impression by winning three
of his first seven starts, and only
being out of the money once.
But what of the horse’s distinctive
name? Where does that come
from and what does it mean?
It’s essentially a love story.
Zoltan Boscik was the alter ego
of Zoltan Szabo, a Hungarian
wrestler who become a cult hero
in Europe and beyond in the
1960s with his trademark scowl,
and his signature move, the threein-one
grapevine!
So what’s the connection?
After meeting in London in
1983, the real life Zoltan Szabo
and the then Sue Toth married
six years later and subsequently
moved from England to New
Zealand, settling in Christchurch,
Sue’s home town.
Sue Szabo and the Whittakers
(Jeff and his wife Trace) were longtime
family friends. Sue’s father
Johnny Toth raced horses with the
Whittakers, most notably Wait A
Moment who won 10 races in the
late 1980s.
Jeff Whittaker and former
Christchurch deputy mayor Norm
Withers bred the Majestic Son foal
that would later be named Zoltan
Boscik. Sue became involved in
the ownership group and it was
suggested he be named after her
husband who had died after a
battle with Alzheimer’s in 2020,
aged 81.
“It’s just so emotional every
time he races,” said Sue Szabo. “It’s
happy sad.
“Zoli was just the most generous,
kind and thoughtful of guys.

He was certainly not what you saw
in the ring.”
To backtrack, Zoltan Szabo
was born in Hungary and had a
difficult childhood in Kondoros, a
town of around 5000 people in the
south east of the country.
During his teenage years the
country was in crisis. It was the
time of the Hungarian Uprising,
an attempted countrywide
revolution against the socialist
government of the time. The
uprising lasted 12 days before
being crushed by Soviet tanks
and troops on November 4,
1956. Thousands were killed and
wounded and nearly a quarter
of a million Hungarians fled the
country.
Among those fleeing to Austria
and ultimately to England was a
16-year-old Zoltan Szabo. Looking
to find work in the mines he
settled in Huddersfield, Yorkshire.
Already a keen wrestler he
pursued his sport and gained a
reputation as a fast and technically
accomplished lightweight.
In the early 1960s he featured
in a number of televised wrestling
shows, even performing in front
of 5000 fans at the Royal Albert
Hall, and by the end of the decade
was crowned British lightweight
champion.
“He was very popular and travelled
all over Europe and to the
Middle East,” said Szabo.
“His persona was a baddie, he’d
give his rivals the ‘hairy eyeball’.
“There was a lot of
showmanship involved but it

seemed more legit than it does
today and he got his fair share on
injuries.”
Just as he was scaling back his
heroics in the ring, he met Sue in
London through a mutual friend.
She had gone on her OE as a
21-year-old in the early 1980s. As
their relationship grew the pair
were involved in managing and
running pubs.
“There was one in Southgate in
north London, one in Wembley .
. . and the Three Greyhounds in
Soho. It could get a bit volatile at
the Wembley one and Zoli was
pretty handy at getting them into
a headlock and marching them
through the premises!
“We also promoted a couple of
(wrestling) shows, because there
was a nightclub within walking
distance of the Southgate pub
called The Pink Elephant . . . It
was fantastic and lots of fun.”
After arriving back in New Zealand
the pair set up a pub of their
own, in Selwyn St, Addington.
“It was in an old post office,
we gutted it and did it up really
nicely.”
Known as “Zoli’s” it was sold in
2001.
The Szabos then moved to a
lifestyle block at Broadfield. They
bred a few horses from there, including
two progeny from Career
Girl called Zoltan and Zolimite.
Of Hungarian descent herself
through her father, Sue plans to
return to Hungary next year. She’s
been there many times but this
time will be different.
“Next year Zoli’s daughter Fiona
and I are going to take his ashes,
do a train trip, drink red wine and
take part of him back to Hungary.
“We are going on a roadie with
Zoli!”

Roadworks Updates
As part of improving Selwyn’s infrastructure,
our contractors have started work on Monday
16 September, in Rolleston’s Izone area to
install a new watermain.
Work will start on Izone Drive and the northbound
lane from Jones Road will be closed, with a oneway
system in place until 29 November. Lights or
one-way systems will also be in place for periods
on Jones Road (Nov–Dec), Walkers Road
(Nov–April) and Two Chain Road (Jan–Jun).
Levi Road will re-open fully from 28 September
ahead of the short-term closure of Lincoln
Rolleston Road between Selwyn Road and Saker
Place for the installation of wastewater pipes
during the school holidays (29 Sept–13 Oct).
There will also be resurfacing outside West
Rolleston School over the holidays, with Dunns
Crossing Road closed from Burnham School
Road to Granite Drive (30 Sept–13 Oct)
CultureFest a successful event enjoyed by many

sights and tastes of cultures from every corner of
the globe at this year’s CultureFest.
The annual event prides itself on bringing the
diversity of Selwyn to Lincoln’s backyard. Of the 51

Eighteen groups put on fantastic performances,
with the audience packing out Nicholas Hall.

early on a weekend morning might get the
job done, but it’s no fun for anyone. The
only solution? Everyone in the household
needs to figure out their cleaning
personality, know what household chores
they are motivated to do, and divvy it all up
in a way that’s fair.
Super organised
You’re driven to achieve a constant state
of cleanliness and tidiness and stressed
when these things aren’t perfect. Cons –
other people think you’re obsessed, and will
leave it all to you because they “won’t do
it properly”. Pros – you’ve completed your
extensive spring cleaning checklist already!
Procrastinator
You can live with mess for a while until
it builds up and something happens that
drives you over the edge into frustration.
Maybe there’s a particular area of mess that
you can’t stand, or a visitor is imminent.

A switchboard upgrade can also be
a cheeky way to avoid the expense of
completely rewiring your home. If the
wiring in your house is really old, your
new switchboard will detect for any
residual current leakage, or for faulty
appliances, and trip itself out – which
means that we can then repair just that
section.
Landlords: a switchboard upgrade
means you no longer have to get out
of bed and trundle over to your rental
house to replace your tenant’s fuse wire
by torchlight. Modern switchboards
have made fuse
wire obsolete, and
these days a blown
fuse can simply be
flicked back into
place as long as all is
accurately labelled
so the tenant knows

generally ranges from

variables affecting
this include: location of the board /

Dealing with Canterbury nitrates
With recent reports on high nitrate
levels in some local water supplies, the
first step is to get your water tested. Also,
if your water comes from on-site wells,
this should be tested annually as nitrate
levels can change. If the test shows nitrate
levels higher that the Drinking Water
Standards for New Zealand, you need to
address this.
Solutions are not one-size-fits-all, so
approach an expert company to
recommend a suitable solution
for your supply and needs.
Flow requirements differ
greatly from one home to
another, and your water
may also contain unwanted
metals, dissolved solids, and
organisms such as E.coli
that need to be reduced or
removed. Other common
issues with Canterbury water
can include high iron and
manganese, water being hard
and low pH levels.
Nitrates are difficult
contaminants to eliminate.
Sediment and carbon filters
don’t remove them, and
boiling the water actually
increases the nitrate
concentration as the water
evaporates.
Ion exchange and reverse
osmosis (RO) are the
best point-of-use devices
for removing nitrates
from drinking water. Ion
exchange is a good option for
groundwater and municipal
whole house nitrate removal,
because the waste volume
can be significantly lower
than other treatment
technologies such as RO.
Ion exchange devices pass
your water through a tank
filled with resin that absorbs
and removes over 90 percent
of nitrates. It operates
much like a household
water softener. In fact, ion
exchange water filtration
is common in producing
bottled water and in-home
water treatment systems.
However, it is not designed
to remove impurities such as
bacteria and viruses.
Reverse osmosis
is our number one
recommendation for treating nitrates in
your drinking water. It effectively removes
up to 95% depending on your original
water temperature, quality and system
pressure.
RO is best as a point-of-use treatment,
normally an under-bench unit in the
kitchen, where the treated water is
only used for drinking water and food
preparation. RO units produce low flow,
with some only treating 190 litres
per day. RO units strip out
just about everything, even
the good minerals, which
is why a remineraliser filter
must also be used to put the
magnesium and calcium back
into the water.
Using RO for whole house
supply requires a storage tank
and pump, and possibly other
filtration depending on the
water quality, which makes it
a more expensive option.

To bee, or
not to bee
September is crunch time
for bees, so Rebecca Lees
shares some ideas on how
to get that nectar flowing
FINALLY, AS winter retreats and
the first signs of spring emerge, so
do our beloved honey bees.
They’ve been huddled in their
hives for months, many colonies
having reduced themselves to
a fistful of bees – their natural
survival instinct during the
coldest months.
The number of bees in the hive
needs to increase rapidly, as do the
food supplies. This will ensure the
queen is spurred on to lay plenty
of eggs, and the workers have
ample food to supply her brood.
Workers also need plenty of
sustenance themselves, as some
leave the hive on long foraging
days. Without adequate supplies
of nectar and pollen, the hive may
swarm, succumb to disease or
starve. It’s a crucial time.
It’s not just sustenance that
honey bees need. They also need
water and warmth, as well as
treatment for varroa mite – nasty
little beasts that quickly wreak
havoc on hives, with the ability to
decimate weak colonies. Without
the beekeeper treating the hive
successfully, there’s not much
hope.
September is also a time when
beekeepers, both amateur and
professional, closely monitor their
hives.
Their initial post-winter
inspection hopes to find a colony
that has weathered winter well,
with at least some supplies for the
busy months ahead. If supplies are
low, the beekeeper will top them
up with some feed, usually in the
form of a sugar syrup. But sugar
syrups are no competition for the
real thing. What the bees really
want is pure, sweet, unadulterated
nectar, and pollen too.
September is Bee Aware
Month, an important reminder
of the essential role we all play
in protecting honeybees, along
with other pollinators. Honey
bees’ role as pollinators can’t be
underestimated. Their decline
would have profound impacts on
our ecosystems and on human life
as we know it.
Whether you’re a beekeeper or
simply someone who enjoys or
cares about bees, there are plenty
of ways you can contribute to
their wellbeing, and all from the
comfort of your backyard.
Provide plant diversity
Planting a variety of flowers in
your garden ensures bees have
access to a steady supply of nectar
and pollen.
Choose plants that bloom
at different times to offer a
continuous food source from
spring through autumn. There’s
no end to the number of plants
that are good for attracting and
supporting bees.
Include native plants
Native plants are particularly
beneficial for bees as they’ve
adapted to our environment and
provide high-quality nutrition.
Consider growing natives that
do well naturally where you live,
as they’ll be less likely to suffer
during very dry or very wet
periods.
Avoid harmful pesticides
I’m sure you’ve heard it before, but
we’ll say it again: pesticides can
harm bees. They also disrupt their

major impact on our ecosystems.

Opt for natural pest control
methods – there are plenty
of recipes out there – or try
companion planting. If you really
feel that pesticides are necessary,
choose bee-friendly options and
apply them at times when bees are
not active, such as very early in the
morning or in the late evening.
Watering holes
Bees need water, especially during
the warmer months. Provide a
shallow water source with landing
pads, such as a bird bath or low
dish with pebbles, or a dish with
floating corks, to give bees a safe
place to drink.
Go wild
This is my all-time favourite tip.
A simple and effective way to support
bees and other pollinators is
to put the mower away.
Let parts of your garden grow
wild and naturally. This choice
benefits bees by offering more foraging
opportunities and provides
habitat for other creatures both
above and below ground.

MILITARY EXERCISE
Blank Firing Exercise
23 – 27 September 2024
The general public is to be advised that a New
Zealand Army Exercise will be conducted in the West
Melton Rifle Range and Burnham Military Camp
area over the period 23 – 27 September 2024.
The exercise will involve up to 60 personnel of
2/1 Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment from
Burnham Military Camp.
Training will involve soldiers carrying automatic
rifles and machine guns, grenade launchers,
flying unmanned quadcopters, and driving
military vehicles conducting battle simulated
scenarios.
Blank rounds and pyrotechnics will be used from
8am to 4pm each day. The exercise will also involve
the movement of troops and vehicles by day.
The New Zealand Army takes fire risk seriously and
will ensure fire mitigation is present.

Spring is (finally) here and for
thousands of Kiwis up and down that
country – that means just one thing: time
for a clear out.
After spending months indoors to keep
out the cold, there’s nothing quite like
being able to throw open the windows
and dust off the cobwebs – sometimes
literally – but before you get started on
your cleaning, it’s a good idea to clear out
any clutter.
Getting started
Kicking off a decluttering spree can be
a bit daunting – especially if it’s been a
while since you last done it - but don’t be
discouraged, break down the task into
small chunks rather than attempting one
big blitz.
The first step is to take a look
around and make a list of what needs
decluttering. Maybe your living room
is a serene and calming haven, but your
bedroom looks like a jumble sale, or your
kitchen drawers and cupboards have
become so overwhelming you’ve put off
thinking about them – whatever it is,
write it down.
With your list of what needs tackling,
you can make a step-by-step plan of your
day to ensure maximum results. You
could start the day by decluttering your
bedroom wardrobes and packing away
your winter clothes, before moving into
the kitchen to take on those overflowing
drawers – whatever way ‘round you want
to do it, create a plan, and stick to it so
you don’t become sidetracked.
This is also the time to collect whatever
you might need for your decluttering:
bin bags, cardboard boxes, rubber gloves,
cleaning supplies etc.
Let’s get going
When you start your decluttering, it’s a
good idea to put things into three piles:
keep, donate, bin – this will speed up
your efforts and ensure that you’re not
holding on to things you no longer need.
Do you have wardrobes full of clothes
that no longer fit? Maybe you’ve got
bookcases crammed with books you’ve
already read? Collectibles gathering dust
in your living room?
Go through them all and see what can
be donated to your local op shop, where
someone else can make use of them. If
you come across anything that is broken
or in a poor condition you can simply
chuck it in the bin.
For some, getting rid of things – even
things you no longer use or need –
can be difficult. If you tend to be a bit
sentimental and struggle to part with
your belongings, don’t be too hard on
yourself. Create a special ‘memory’ box
where you can stash things that you
really can’t bear to part with.
If you’re still struggling with deciding
to keep an item or not, experts suggest
asking yourself, ‘is this item useful or
does it bring me happiness?’
If the answer is no, then it’s time to say
goodbye.
Just as important as getting rid of stuff,
is deciding what to keep. Once you have
your pile of items to ‘keep’, you’ll need
to find a place to put them.To avoid
areas looking cluttered, invest in storage
solutions such as boxes and baskets to
store bathroom and laundry supplies,
and decorative bowls to hold keys, phone
chargers and pairs of glasses.
Once you’re done, come up with a
short routine you can do every week, or
fortnight, to keep on top of your clutter.
Finally, don’t forget to give yourself a
pat on the back!
