PINTOS OY RESPONSIBILITY REPORT 2023
INNOVATING AND REINFORCING
OURSELVES RESPONSIBLY
Responsibility and sustainability management
have a long track record at Pintos. From the
very beginning, we have wanted to take responsibility
in our operation: respect each other and
nature. In the actual strategy work, it has been a
constant for decades. Initiating the preparation
of written responsibility reports has, really, been
the logical next step in the tradition.
As in previous years, for this third report, we
have now collected a wide array of data about
the economic and social responsibility of our
company, as well as the sustainability aspect.
The annually updated report presents the effects
of our operation and sustainability measures.
Responsible business means general guidelines
as well as value-based choices, unique to
each company. Our key focus areas are energy
efficiency and potentials new technology bring.
This is also why we have invested in these in
the past years. In 2023, we advanced the most
extensive investment programme in Pintos’ history.
It gave us the framework for occupational
safety and more efficient industrial machinery
and methods as well. We also launched more
responsible products made-to-measure and upgraded
into electric forklift trucks at the factories.
In spite of the challenging times, we also decided
to invest in our personnel through training and
by hiring summer employees at the factories.
What makes me happy is seeing how well our
entire personnel has engaged in the changes.
We can now forward the related changes fast.
Today, responsibility and sustainability are a
prerequisite for successful business operations.
For us, it has meant a policy that we produce
specially-made products for our customers instead
of bulk products. They improve occupational
safety, save time and materials, and make
construction work more efficient. Our customers
also require sustainability actions from us, and
this is what we also expect of our partners: based
on customer feedback, value-based choices are
greatly appreciated. For us, responsibility and
sustainability are, indeed, the backbone of our
operation, and, especially in international trade,
a way to stand out. Based on international figures,
Finnish companies are in the forefront
of responsibility and sustainability, and this is
where we also belong.
PINTOS OY RESPONSIBILITY REPORT 2023
FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
PRIORITIES OF ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY IN 2023–2024
Responsibility is one of our core values.
In 2022, we set focus areas for our responsibility work that guide our operation.
• Active investment program
Size of program approximately 10 million euros.
• Increasing competitiveness in
Pintos’ travel-to-work area.
Participating in different projects such as donated
professorship with the University of Turku.
PINTOS OY RESPONSIBILITY REPORT 2023
INVESTING IN GROWTH AND WELLBEING
Investments, renewal and development
play a key role at Pintos. We invest a significant
portion of our profit in new technology.
Our investment program is planned
for periods of 3-4 years. In the previous period,
the investments were approximately
six million euros. The value of the current
investment program for 2022–2024 is approximately
ten million euros.
A stable financial base enables continuous
investments, which has made Pintos a
technological and economical leader in its
field. Thanks to systematic innovations in
our production processes and facilities, we
can be more efficient, our production can
be of better quality and we reach a better
security of supply. At the same time, we are
building a foundation for an ever diversifying,
extending production.
We want to reinforce ourselves in a responsible
way. In addition to operational
and financial growth, we will invest in our
employees and their well-being: we will introduce
reforms to improve both safety and
comfort in the working environment. We
always consider the environmental impact
of our choices such as energy efficiency,
material waste and waste volume, when
replacing our equipment and practices.
In investment projects and modernisation
of industrial machinery, we focus on the
life-cycle thinking of production lines and
equipment maintenance. To achieve the
most viable or the most ecological option,
we always base our investment and maintenance
decisions on the information we
gather.
SAFER,
MORE EFFICIENT
PRODUCTION
In 2023, we made a number of investments that, in many ways, carried
forward our sustainability work.
The most important financial investment of the whole investment period,
a new welding line for reinforcements, was installed at the Eura
factory. The welding line acquired from Austria represents the most advanced
technology in the industry and significantly strengthens Pintos'
production capacity. The production line meets current safety requirements,
and thanks to the integrated RCC technology, it also saves a
significant amount of electricity. The new equipment will also increase
the efficiency and speed of production, which strengthens Pintos' position
as a pioneer in the manufacture of reinforcement mesh and a
trailblazer in the industry.
A closed-loop cooling water project was implemented at the Eura mesh
plant. In addition to optimal cooling, the new cooling equipment will
improve the quality of the products and extend the life of the consumables
in the production machines, such as bearings and rollers. The
cooling system is completely closed and automatic, which significantly
increases the energy efficiency of the plant.
At both the Eura and Rauma factories, modern cold rolling mill lines
were installed to increase the availability and safety of the wire on a
large scale. Occupational safety will be boosted not only by smart technology,
but also by more comprehensive enclosures for equipment.
This will also make the working environment neater. The new lines also
feature solutions that minimise the production of nonconforming products,
thereby reducing material wastage. The dedicated lines built for
both plants will also substantially reduce the need to transport drawn
wire between the plants, and reduce the carbon footprint.
PINTOS OY RESPONSIBILITY REPORT 2023
ECONOMIC PROSPERITY FOR THE WHOLE AREA
Pintos delivers economic prosperity not only to its
own personnel, but also to society at large.
Our production plants are located in Eura and Rauma,
in the heart of the Satakunta region. In 2023,
we had a total of 132 employees at our plants, in
addition to indirectly employing a number of partners
in logistics, packaging and maintenance, for example.
We are a prominent employer in our area and,
through corporate taxation, we strengthen regional
economy in particular.
ostot euromääräisesti
Around 90 per cent of our turnover is from sales of
reinforcing ostot bars, euromääräisesti
lifting lugs and industrial nails manufactured
in our own production facilities. The most
significant product group by far is reinforcing reinforcement
mesh for concrete construction, for which
we are the market leader in the Nordic countries.
Even though we operate internationally, we are a
local actor deeply rooted in the Satakunta region.
Our own plants manage everything from planning
and production to sales. Local presence is not only
a matter of honour, it also ensures that we operate
responsibly: with our production sites close by and
people who are familiar with them, we can manage
our operations in a transparent and sustainable way.
ostot toimittajamäärä
ostot toimittajamäärä
We prefer partnerships with Finnish suppliers and
partners wherever technically and economically
feasible. However, raw materials account for by far
the largest share of procurement costs each year,
and the main raw material, wire rod, is not available
in Finland. Pintos expects that all its partners are operating
responsibly, both locally and overseas, and
only purchases raw materials from trusted, established
steel suppliers.
The challenges in the construction sector and the
stagnation of the market were also temporarily reflected
in our domestic content. While in a typical
year, domestic purchases have accounted for
around 20 per cent of all acquisitions, in 2023 the
share reached 41 per cent as steel purchases decreased.
We support the operation of the society by paying taxes and creating jobs. We handle
tax returns and other legal obligations properly and promptly. We comply with the
current legislation in paying, collecting, accounting for and reporting taxes.
The tax footprint consists of two main areas: direct taxes paid by the company and
taxes paid by the company. Direct taxes include income tax and vehicle and transfer
taxes. Taxes paid by the company include withholding tax and VAT.

ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY
PINTOS OY RESPONSIBILITY REPORT 2023
ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY
PRIORITIES IN 2023–2024
Responsibility is one of our core values.
In 2022, we set focus areas for our responsibility work that guide our operation.
1. Improving energy efficiency:
• Factory lighting now uses LED lights
All lighting in factory premises and courtyards will be fully
equipped with LED lights by the end of 2023. It has been
estimated that the consumption of electricity drops to
approximately one third by using LED lights as compared
to quicksilver lamps, for instance. At the same time, the
increased light output improves occupational safety.
• Implementing measures in the energy review
The aim is to implement the proposed measures in the
energy review (completed at the end of 2022) during 2023
and 2024.
2. Reducing the carbon footprint in the company’s internal logistics:
• Reducing the transport of semi-finished products between
sites
The target for 2024 is for emissions from the transport of
semi-finished products (coils) to fall to 11 per cent of the 2021
figure. The drop is approximately 37 CO2 tons per year driving
one way.
• Carbon neutrality of our forklift truck fleet in five years for
equipment with lifting capacities of less than five tonnes
Replacing all diesel forklift trucks with lifting capacities ≤ 5
tonnes with electric forklift trucks. Larger forklift trucks replaced
based on development in technology.
PINTOS OY RESPONSIBILITY REPORT 2023
EFFICIENT OPERATION REDUCES
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT
We at Pinto are constantly looking for new
environmentally friendly operating models
and we work towards minimizing the environmental
load. We think that when efficient,
high-quality operation is combined
with well-managed modern processes and
innovative product development, we create
impactful changes.
Efficient use of raw materials, energy and
packaging reduces unnecessary use of
natural resources and raw material waste.
High-quality products to measure such as
tailored reinforcement components also reduce
waste for our customers. We also further
developed new recess forms for making
binding point recess forms. With these, we
reduce both the used EPS and waste from
production.
Our environmental work is guided by a certified
ISO 14001 management system. The
largest share of the used raw materials is
recycled and the packaging of our products
are fully recyclable. Pintos has taken
producer responsibility for its packaging by
entering into an agreement with producer
associations managed by RINKI Oy.
In 2023, Pintos used recycled, scrap-based
steel in 95 per cent of all steel materials in
its production. The proportion has increased
each year: In 2022, the corresponding number
was 91 per cent and in 2020 it was 90
per cent.
We organize the transportation of raw materials
and ready products as efficiently
as possible and as full loads. Optimizing
transportation reduces costs and saves the
nature.
PINTOS OY RESPONSIBILITY REPORT 2023
RECYCLING ALL WASTE
All waste we generate is recycled or used for energy production, which we achieve through
a well-functioning waste management system. Over 90 per cent of our waste is metal scrap,
which is recycled. Our aim is to minimize waste at all stages of the production process.
The amount of scrap metal is directly proportional to the volume of production. In 2023,
there was considerably less metal scrap. The amounts of other waste change a little every
year, independent of production amounts. There was no more hot-dip galvanizing, which
resulted in zero zink scrap. The share of other waste was increased by investment-related
construction projects.
PINTOS OY RESPONSIBILITY REPORT 2023
USE OF ENERGY
In 2023, the total amount of electricity used in our production
was 6,190 MWh. The energy intensity figure describing energy
efficiency, or electricity consumption in kilowatt-hours
per kilogram produced, increased by 17 per cent compared
to the record high in 2022. This is explained by a significant
reduction in production compared to electricity consumption.
The shift in production towards more customer-specific products
has also had an impact. We also use electricity generated
by our own solar power plant and domestic bioenergy
derived from wood chips to heat our factory buildings.
We have outlined our responsibility goals so that all forklift
trucks with less lifting capacity than five tons are electric by
2028. By the end of 2023, half of these forklift trucks will be
electric. The fuel consumption of forklift trucks, in litres per
kilogram produced, fell by 9.8 per cent compared to the previous
year.

SAFE WORKING CONDITIONS
The foundation of Pintos’ operation is a
safe, comfortable working environment. We
work towards this in many different ways.
Safety at work is not just about preventing
accidents, but also about improving productivity,
creating a positive working environment
and increasing customer satisfaction.
In the construction industry, there is a real
risk of accidents, which is why equipment
must be kept in particularly good condition,
protective equipment must be worn and operating
instructions must be kept up to date.
At the same time, we are building a foundation
for an ever-diversifying, expanding production.
Taking care of occupational safety
issues also improves customer satisfaction.
Investing in occupational safety, responsible
working practices and accident-free periods
are of great interest to our customers
and other stakeholders.
The most significant improvement in occupational
safety in recent years has resulted
from technological advances and
increased automation. As the traditional
working environment of the metal industry
is transformed into automated production
lines, machine by machine, the likelihood
of accidents is also reduced. However,
production still generates noise and dust,
and there are other safety risks. We have
identified these problems and investigated
the related development needs. Our goal is
to reduce occupational accidents and sick
leaves by continuously developing safety at
work and the operating environment.
We implement the occupational health services
for the employees based on Finnish
law and the operating plan of the occupational
health services. The occupational
health services are provided by our longterm
partner Lääkärikeskus Minerva for the
Eura and Rauma offices, and by Mehiläinen
Working Life Services for other locations.
Pintos also likes to promote the occupational
safety of their customers. Our readyto-install,
carefully made-to-measure reinforcements
reduce heavy and dangerous
work steps in precast concrete factories and
on construction sites. Our product selection
includes occupational safety products that
improve safety in the acual construction
work. Pintos also makes close occupational
safety cooperation with other suppliers.
PINTOS OY RESPONSIBILITY REPORT 2023
INVESTMENTS IN
OCCUPATIONAL
SAFETY
At Pintos, occupational safety is much
more than complying with laws and
decrees. In addition to taking care of
protective equipment and regulations,
a safe working environment is built on
the right attitude: both by caring for
your colleagues and by looking for increasingly
risk-free ways of working.
Pintos has recently invested in a
new, safer working culture, especially
through training. In 2023, the
"Raudanluja työturvallisuus" training
course specially designed for Pintos
employees was launched to learn
new, better ways of working. The
participants included the company's
chief representatives, managers and
health and safety representatives.
The intention is to transfer the lessons
learned during the training to Pintos'
factories in Eura and Rauma in the
coming years.
In addition, investments in equipment
have led to a significant improvement
in occupational safety. New, safer
equipment is steadily acquired for
the factories, and modifications have
been made to old equipment to improve
safety at work. One significant
investment that will increase safety at
work is a brand new, state-of-the-art
reinforcement welding line acquired
for the Eura steel mesh factory in
2023.

LESS ACCIDENTS
In 2023, the rate of accidents at work was 33.0
accidents per million hours worked (LTIF1). This is
a slight decrease compared to the previous year,
when the accident frequency rate was 35.4 accidents
per million hours worked. There were seven
accidents at work leading to at least one day's absence
in 2023. To accelerate the decline, we have
further identified and minimised work-related risks
and provided training for our personnel. Employees
have been regularly encouraged to report
even minor safety issues. We process all accidents,
touch and go situations and safety observations
with our personnel.
We monitor sickness absences and their causes
regularly and have an early intervention model in
place. The sickness and accident absence rate as
a percentage of total hours worked decreased to
5.8 per cent in 2023, up from 8.2 per cent in 2022.
Absences due to accidents at work accounted for
9.5 per cent of all absences due to illness and
accidents.
INNOVATING
THROUGH TRAINING
Genuine everyday interaction is an
integral part of our working culture. It
has been underlined in our company
values as well. Regular development
discussions support daily communication
and concern all our employees.
2023 was a tough year. We also had
to negotiate changes, which made
smooth, confidential dialogue even
more important than before.
In 2023, the training was mainly focused
on developing safety at work. In
addition to occupational safety training,
the training programme included
courses on hot work and training on
legal responsibilities and obligations
in occupational safety.
We will continue to invest in renewing
our working culture and safety at work
in the near future. In 2024, both Pintos
factories will pilot the Lean 5S model
and organise related training courses.
The model has been developed
to manage the work environment and
standardise working methods, and it
also strongly supports occupational
safety.

WE SUPPORT
MANY
CLUBS AND
ASSOCIATIONS
Every year, Pintos supports local sports
clubs and other associations. Of the sports
clubs, we focus on the ones for children
and young people. Of the local clubs, e.g.
Euran Raiku, Panelian Raikas and Euran
Pallo do extensive youth work. We have
supported their operation financially for
many years.
Our aim is to work to help clubs to engage
children and young people in sport, regardless
of their background, to experience
the joy and excitement of sport and the
power of teamwork. In 2023, Pintos was
involved in supporting the construction of
the multi-purpose hall in Eura among other
things. In 2023, youth sport will account for
71 per cent of all the funding we distribute.
All in all, we supported 44 different actors.
