MinJoo Lee has participated in over 220 group exhibitions in a multitude of countries, including<br />
Korea, Japan, the USSR, Mongolia, Oman, India, the USA, the Arab Emirates, France, Spain and<br />
Germany. The artist's work has been the subject of more than seventy scientific articles. Furthermore,<br />
she is a member of ten artists' organisations.<br />
MinJoo Lee was born in Seoul, South Korea, in 1957. Upon completion of her studies in oriental<br />
painting, MinJoo Lee became one of Korea's most innovative and influential artists. Between 1987<br />
and 2007, she held 31 solo exhibitions and participated in over 400 group exhibitions in Germany,<br />
the USA, China, Canada, Taiwan, Japan, Russia, the United Arab Emirates and Spain.<br />
Furthermore, MinJoo Lee is engaged in academic pursuits. A detailed examination of her extensive<br />
body of work, coupled with a review of her contributions to various art periodicals, clearly demonstrates<br />
her profound enthusiasm for the visual arts. The numerous art prizes that MinJoo Lee has been<br />
awarded in various competitions serve as testament to her exceptional artistic abilities. The awards<br />
include the 'Special Prize' at the Seoul Art Contest, the 'Grand Prize' at the Grand Art Competition,<br />
a scholarship from the Korean Arts Council, the Freeman Alternate's Grant at the Vermont Studio<br />
Centre (USA) and the International Fan Painting Prize (Japan).<br />
MinJoo Lee is widely regarded as the 20th Vice President of the Korean Fine Artists Association and<br />
as one of Korea's most creative and influential artists. This perception is corroborated by a substantial<br />
body of evidence in the form of television interviews, newspaper and magazine articles published<br />
both domestically and abroad.<br />
The artist's oeuvre demonstrates her efforts to reconcile traditional Korean painting with the demands<br />
of the modern age. This thesis is corroborated by the responses of visitors to her exhibitions, which<br />
include both traditionalists and those with a more contemporary outlook. The distinctive quality of<br />
MinJoo Lee's work can be attributed to the utilisation of a range of natural materials, including traditional<br />
stone colour, Korean ink, eggs, gold and pearls, applied to transparent substrates made from<br />
Korean silk, traditional Korean mulberry paper, self-made paper, plaster and wood. It is evident that<br />
these works possess aesthetic appeal; however, they also exhibit a humorous quality, which does not<br />
detract from the social message. In this context, it is noteworthy that the work evokes associations with<br />
the ritual of a psychoanalytical session.<br />
MinJoo Lee pursued studies in Oriental painting at the esteemed Seoul National University, where<br />
she exhibited exemplary performance in both the oral and written examinations. Furthermore, she<br />
graduated from Seoul National University's graduate school with distinction, as she is a descendant of<br />
the royal family of the Yi Dynasty. Furthermore, she attended seminars at the University of Michigan,<br />

Graduate Studies (Ann Arbor, Michigan), and the Pratt Institute (New York, NY) in the<br />
fields of painting and papermaking. Furthermore, she fulfils the role of a university lecturer<br />
in the fields of Oriental painting, art history and comparative art.<br />
The question of how MinJoo Lee is able to maintain the energy required for her multifaceted<br />
commitments is a question that many people ask themselves. In her 1990 diary, Lee<br />
makes a noteworthy observation, namely that there are numerous teachings pertaining to<br />
the cosmos, time and space of the universe in the East. The assumption that human existence<br />
occurs within a context characterised by suffering and disappointment is a pervasive<br />
theme in scientific literature. The only means of overcoming this challenge is through the<br />
implementation of meditation and personal discipline. In the context of meditation, the<br />
individual attains a state in which their ego-consciousness is obliterated. As a result, the<br />
experience of becoming unified with the universe and of phenomena interpenetrating one<br />
another emerges.<br />
The traditional techniques and philosophies remain highly pertinent. These concepts are<br />
associated with a modern sensibility, as well as an intuitive understanding. The associations<br />
that my paintings evoke can be described in a variety of terms, including, but not<br />
limited to, insects, monsters, dead spirits, God, and others. The works are characterised<br />
by an aesthetic effect that arises from a direct reference to the artist's own persona. The<br />
objective is to establish a harmonious correspondence between the artist, nature and the<br />
supernatural. Concurrently, an effort is made to establish a resonance between the artist<br />
and his paintings. This is why a significant proportion of my paintings and exhibitions are<br />
summarised under titles such as 'Resonance', 'Healing Brushstrokes' and so forth.<br />
Since 2001, Min-Joo Lee has increasingly focused her artistic output on the social milieu<br />
in which she resides. Her oeuvre is particularly preoccupied with the interconnection between<br />
war and peace, as well as the resonance of the universe. In Minjoo Lee's work, both<br />
physical and spiritual elements are considered.<br />
