Cultural Olympics a day to
celebrate school’s diversity
TE KŌMANAWA Rowley
School in Hoon Hay last week
brought together pupils, staff
and whānau for a day of physical
activity to embrace unity and
diversity.
The Harakeke Cultural
Olympics, created by the school
community in collaboration
with Sport Canterbury’s Healthy
Active Learning team, was a
fun-filled day that reflected the
school’s diverse community.
“The Olympics, for our
children, isn’t something that’s
always accessible,” school deputy
principal Niki Penny said.
“Also, as part of our school
dynamic, have a number of
students with neurodiversity
and learning needs and physical
disability, so part of what the
children have done in their
learning this term is around
‘how do we make the Olympics
reflect us?’”
Participating pupils in years
3-5 dressed in colourful cultural
attire for the occasion.
The day started with an
opening ceremony and parade
before getting stuck into lape – a
Samoan game similar to softball,
boccia – a Paralympic precision
ball sport, and Tī Uru – a traditional
Māori ball game played on
a netball-sized court.
Sport Canterbury Healthy
Active Learning lead facilitator
Lynn Kilpatrick said the day
showcased how the school was
“living out the intent” of Healthy
Active Learning.
COLOURFUL: AJ Fili and Lealofi Fili lead the opening ceremony parade while Isaiah Sa’imoa displays a Samoan flag.
Te Kōmanawa Rowley joined
Healthy Active Learning, an
initiative aimed at enhancing the
well-being of children through
quality physical activity, play and
physical education, in 2022.
“The exciting thing for our
team is now teachers are leading
all the mahi in their school,
so they’ve got the confidence
and capability to plan really
high-quality physical activity
opportunities,” Kilpatrick said.
Teacher Susi Afitu said the day
was about allowing the pupils to
“love their culture”.
“All the parents have had a
say in how we can make this
accessible to all the other kids
and we’ve incorporated different
languages in certain aspects
around the games.
“It links directly with the
(school’s value) of mana. It’s
ensuring that we’re empowering
the kids, that they’re able to
be their true selves and not be
ashamed of who they are and
all the things that make them,
them.”
We felt we were in safe hands throughout the entire process
from listing to auction. We trusted Cam implicitly to achieve the
best sale price possible and he worked hard on our behalf to
achieve this. Cam’s advice and guidance was invaluable, and his
management of auctions negotiations is exceptional.
Thanks to Cam and his excellent team for a fantastic
experience once again.
GOLD: Hunter Smith won the basic novice boys’ competition.
Nationals next for
successful skaters
• By Sam Coughlan
THE CENTAURUS Ice Skating
Club is turning its attention to
the nationals after picking up
a haul of medals at the North
Island championships at the
weekend.
Centaurus had eight competitors
in Auckland for the competition
and took home five golds
and two bronzes.
Hunter Smith won the basic
novice boys’ competition, and
older sister Eva Smith placed
third in the juvenile girls.
Juliette Miller won the juvenile
girls’ event and then made it two
golds when she combined with
Timothy Sampson to win the
free dance competition. Sampson
also won the adult interpretive
silver event.
Izzy Hack won youth interpretive
silver and Coco Flood was
third in girls’ basic novice.
Claira McDowell competed but
didn’t medal.
All except Flood will be in
action at the national championships,
which will be hosted by
Centaurus at the Alpine Ice
Sports Centre from October 17-
20. It will be the first time since
2016 the competition has been
held in Christchurch.
Committee member Clare
Attenborough said the North Island
competition served as good
preparation for the skaters ahead
of nationals.
“For us it was a case of more
competition exposure, more
feedback for their skating, and
different competition,” she said.
“In the South Islands, you
tend to compete against similar
people all the time, so you’ve
got different competition and
people who will be competing at
nationals.”
BALANCE: Izzy Hack, left, competing in the youth interpretive silver competition where
she won gold. Juliette Miller won the juvenile girls’ competition.
Te Aratai College:
Embracing Tradition and Teamwork
Kī-o-Rahi is a traditional Māori ball sport
gaining significant popularity across Aotearoa,
particularly in kura, as a sign of cultural revival
and whanaungatanga. The game is steeped
in Māori tradition, with its origins linked to the
pūrākau of Rahi, a Māori ancestor.
According to the pūrākau, the game is based
on the story of Rahitūtakahina and the rescue
of his wife, Tīarakurapakewai. Her kidnappers
evoked powerful atua and magic to hinder
Rahi in his rescue attempts, forcing him to
circumvent a second sun, vine-thick forests,
taniwha and desert tundras. Rahi used the
skills and strategies now reflected in Kī-o-Rahi
to navigate these challenges, making the
game, not just a sport but also a way to engage
in Te ao Māori.
of our cultural heritage. Te Aratai College
has embraced and championed Kī-o-
Rahi since 2014 and we are now avid
competitors. Jesse Harding, Head of Sport
has been the coach of the Kī-o-Rahi team
for the last seven years.
“When I started in 2017, we won the
regional tournament and qualified for
nationals. We attended and placed
11th. We won again in 2018 and 2019
in the Waitaha/Canterbury regionals.
The competition and whanaungatanga
it nurtures, it has been inspiring to see
Kī-o-Rahi used as a vehicle to engage
rangatahi into te ao Māori. And it’s so
much more than just a sport. As a team
we trained and toured together and also
participated in noho and wānanga at
Te Puna Wānaka, with many thanks to
Heperi Harris and The Kutt: Functional
Fitness.”
In April the Te Aratai Kī-o-Rahi team
qualified for the Nationals that took
place in sun-soaked Gisborne. There
were 36 teams from around the
country that qualified and took part in
Jury Tipa-Tuhura, Lincoln Siataga-
Nelson-Albrett and Raniera Babbington
the tournament. Te Aratai finished 19th, with
four wins and four losses. “We were proud of
this performance and result. Every game we
lost was close and the team did extremely
well.” The team are off to the South Island
Tournament this weekend. They have finished
3rd the in last two years at the event, and
are looking to finish this year on a high note
with their senior players LJ Beattie, Jury Tipa-
Tuhura and Raniera Babbington wrapping up
their 5-year high school legacy as Te Aratai
College Kī-o-Rahi teammates.
LJ Beattie
The sport involves two teams, each with seven
or eight players, and is played on a circular
field divided into zones. The game is played
with varying rules depending on the geographic
area it is played. A process called Tatū, before
the game, determines which rules the two
teams will use. The objective is to score points
by hitting a central tupu/target with the Kī/ball,
while also defending your zone. The dynamic
nature of the game, which combines elements
of rugby, netball, and touch football, makes it
both physically challenging and strategically
engaging.
Kī-o-Rahi has seen a resurgence in recent
years, attributed to efforts by educators and
community leaders to promote traditional Māori
sports, recognizing them as vital components
Students visit
This term we hosted three groups of
international students for language
exchanges. In Week 2, students
from Kurashiki, Japan, and in Week 5,
students from Chita City, Japan, joined
us. They attended classes and explored
Christchurch. The Chita City students
performed a Japanese fishing dance at
our Year 10 assembly.
In Week 6, 20 students from St Mary
At the beginning of Our overall placings
September, the Annual
Girls Basketball
Winter Tournament Girls Netball
was held. We had Boys Hockey
different sports across
the country. We would Girls Football
like to acknowledge Boys Football
and thank all the staff,
Rugby U15 Boys
coaches, and managers
who supported our Rock Climbing
teams throughout the
tournament, with a Golf (Team event)
special mention of our
Sports Department for
ensuring the week ran smoothly
and providing our students with
a fantastic experience. Well done
to all the students who took part.
Early in 2023,
we received a
generous bequest
from one of our
foundation pupils,
the late Mr. Peter
Brine, to refurbish
our wharenui.
We are thrilled to
announce that the
refurbishment has
just begun, and we
eagerly anticipate
the new space that
our ākonga and the
wider kura whānau
will soon enjoy.
Joseph School in Santiago, Chile, arrived
for a three-week stay. Each group was
welcomed with a pōwhiri and expressed
gratitude for the warm welcome and
introduction to Māori tikanga.
Cashmere students can participate in
exchanges with sister schools in France,
Japan, and Chile. These experiences
broaden perspectives, enrich participants,
and foster global understanding.
