Community rallies behind
food bank after big theft
• By Winston Davey
THE COMMUNITY has
come together to help the New
Brighton food bank after it was
broken into and emptied out.
“I don’t understand the motive
behind
it, there was
no reason for
it,” said Trudy
Burrows, who
founded the
free food pantry
next to St
Faith’s Church
seven years
ago.
Trudy
Burrows
Burrows decided to post on
the New Brighton community
Facebook page asking for donations
of food after “everything
has taken”. She was inundated
with support.
“The community was great,
(people) went into their pantries
and tried to find old things they
had or didn’t want anymore,
just excess to them.
“They even went into their
gardens and brought fresh produce,
and even some gave us a
small donation. It really helped
us rally and get back on top of
things.”
Burrows said the thieves had
taken all the food.
“They cleared us out, smashed
eggs everywhere and left a real
mess.”
She believes they must have
been skilled, as the food bank
has “big locks and an iron bar”.
It also has cameras, which the
thieves covered with cardboard
so no one could be identified.
Volunteer Carolyn Tauailoto
said people’s generosity after the
theft was amazing.
“The community really relies
on us. People we had never
met before, strangers just came
with bags and bags and bags of
canned goods or vegetables.”
The food bank is now afraid to
leave some items on its premises,
in case they get targeted again.
“It’s just human nature I
guess, which is kind of sad,”
Tauailoto said.
Food bank recipient Steve
Martin said “people from all
walks of life” visited the food
bank.
He was grateful for it.
“As a single guy, I sometimes
feel a little like maybe I don’t really
need it as much as others.”
According to The New
Zealand Food Network, the
main reasons people rely on
food banks are cost of living
(88 per cent), low individual/
household income (70 per cent)
and unemployment (65 per
cent).
Burrows said the food bank
has started to focus on giving
to residents in the greater
New Brighton area, to allow
its volunteers to get to know
people and their situation.
Thieves managed to break
in, despite some security
measures.
Cricketers stunned after
White Ferns presentation
• By Sam Coughlan
NEW BRIGHTON Cricket
Club’s juniors got the shock of
their lives when they were asked
to present the White Ferns with
their playing shirts at the T20
World Cup squad announcement
at Hagley Oval last week.
Junior club captain Paul Barr,
who was there with the kids to
supervise, thought they had just
been invited to be in the audience
and get autographs.
But when they arrived at the
event, they were informed the
team would be a part of the
presentation.
“They were just told to wear
black shorts and they’d be given
shirts on the day, then when we
got there we found out that the
kids were actually going to be
handing the players their playing
shirts when their name got called
out,” Barr said.
“You could just see the smiles
on their faces, they were already
excited because they were there
and they were seeing the White
Ferns in person. But to actually
get up there and give them a
high-five when they gave them
their shirts, I think they just
absolutely relished it.”
“These opportunities don’t
come along (very often), and
these kids idolise the players, so
HARD WORK: The pupils practiced every day last week in
preparation for Sunday’s competition.
Hard work pays off
for kapa haka kids
• By Isabella Adams
BROMLEY SCHOOL picked up
numerous surprise results at the
Tūhono Kapa Haka Festival on
Sunday.
The 46-strong kapa haka group
won the overall junior division,
beating eight other schools.
The school was also awarded
best novelty item and came first in
haka and third in waiata-ā-ringa
and waiata tira (choral).
Teacher Whaea Jo Wagner said
the success came as a surprise to
both pupils and teachers, as the
group did not place in last year’s
competition.
“They were shocked. I don’t
think they expected it.
“They just kind of thought we
were going to perform and that we
weren’t going to take anything. So
they were buzzing.”
The group has been practicing
every Friday since the beginning
day in the week leading up to the
competition.
“It was just such a good result for
all the hard work that our kids had
put in and that our staff and tutors
had given the children,” Wagner
said.
“It was so nice too because
tūhono means to be connected,
so having all our whānau there
and our kids performing to our
whānau, it just made it all feel real
for our children because they’d
been practicing so hard.”
The group’s next performance
will be at an inter-school concert at
Te Aratai College:
Embracing Tradition and Teamwork
Kī-o-Rahi is a traditional Māori ball sport
gaining significant popularity across Aotearoa,
particularly in kura, as a sign of cultural revival
and whanaungatanga. The game is steeped
in Māori tradition, with its origins linked to the
pūrākau of Rahi, a Māori ancestor.
According to the pūrākau, the game is based
on the story of Rahitūtakahina and the rescue
of his wife, Tīarakurapakewai. Her kidnappers
evoked powerful atua and magic to hinder
Rahi in his rescue attempts, forcing him to
circumvent a second sun, vine-thick forests,
taniwha and desert tundras. Rahi used the
skills and strategies now reflected in Kī-o-Rahi
to navigate these challenges, making the
game, not just a sport but also a way to engage
in Te ao Māori.
of our cultural heritage. Te Aratai College
has embraced and championed Kī-o-
Rahi since 2014 and we are now avid
competitors. Jesse Harding, Head of Sport
has been the coach of the Kī-o-Rahi team
for the last seven years.
“When I started in 2017, we won the
regional tournament and qualified for
nationals. We attended and placed
11th. We won again in 2018 and 2019
in the Waitaha/Canterbury regionals.
The competition and whanaungatanga
it nurtures, it has been inspiring to see
Kī-o-Rahi used as a vehicle to engage
rangatahi into te ao Māori. And it’s so
much more than just a sport. As a team
we trained and toured together and also
participated in noho and wānanga at
Te Puna Wānaka, with many thanks to
Heperi Harris and The Kutt: Functional
Fitness.”
In April the Te Aratai Kī-o-Rahi team
qualified for the Nationals that took
place in sun-soaked Gisborne. There
were 36 teams from around the
country that qualified and took part in
Jury Tipa-Tuhura, Lincoln Siataga-
Nelson-Albrett and Raniera Babbington
the tournament. Te Aratai finished 19th, with
four wins and four losses. “We were proud of
this performance and result. Every game we
lost was close and the team did extremely
well.” The team are off to the South Island
Tournament this weekend. They have finished
3rd the in last two years at the event, and
are looking to finish this year on a high note
with their senior players LJ Beattie, Jury Tipa-
Tuhura and Raniera Babbington wrapping up
their 5-year high school legacy as Te Aratai
College Kī-o-Rahi teammates.
LJ Beattie
The sport involves two teams, each with seven
or eight players, and is played on a circular
field divided into zones. The game is played
with varying rules depending on the geographic
area it is played. A process called Tatū, before
the game, determines which rules the two
teams will use. The objective is to score points
by hitting a central tupu/target with the Kī/ball,
while also defending your zone. The dynamic
nature of the game, which combines elements
of rugby, netball, and touch football, makes it
both physically challenging and strategically
engaging.
Kī-o-Rahi has seen a resurgence in recent
years, attributed to efforts by educators and
community leaders to promote traditional Māori
sports, recognizing them as vital components
GOLD: Hunter Smith won the basic novice boys’ competition.
Nationals next for
successful skaters
• By Sam Coughlan
THE CENTAURUS Ice Skating
Club is turning its attention to
the nationals after picking up
a haul of medals at the North
Island championships at the
weekend.
Centaurus had eight competitors
in Auckland for the competition
and took home five golds
and two bronzes.
Hunter Smith won the basic
novice boys’ competition, and
older sister Eva Smith placed
third in the juvenile girls.
Juliette Miller won the juvenile
girls’ event and then made it two
golds when she combined with
Timothy Sampson to win the
free dance competition. Sampson
also won the adult interpretive
silver event.
Izzy Hack won youth interpretive
silver and Coco Flood was
third in girls’ basic novice.
Claira McDowell competed but
didn’t medal.
All except Flood will be in
action at the national championships,
which will be hosted by
Centaurus at the Alpine Ice
Sports Centre from October 17-
20. It will be the first time since
2016 the competition has been
held in Christchurch.
Committee member Clare
Attenborough said the North Island
competition served as good
preparation for the skaters ahead
of nationals.
“For us it was a case of more
competition exposure, more
feedback for their skating, and
different competition,” she said.
“In the South Islands, you
tend to compete against similar
people all the time, so you’ve
got different competition and
people who will be competing at
nationals.”
she won gold. Juliette Miller won the juvenile girls’ competition.
