This week’s cold snap had residents waking up to
snow on top of Banks Peninsula on Tuesday. The
city council contractors checking, gritting and grading
the roads around the Hilltop, Summit Rd, Long Bay
Rd, Pigeon Bay, Purau Port Levy Rd, Okains Bay,
Little Akaloa and Le Bons Bay. Sunshine returned on
A WIDE-REACHING fire
safeguard the Port Hills from
future wildfires after the blaze in
February.
Coordinating the planting
of green firebreaks is the main
crafting fire management plans
with individual
communities.
“We have already begun work to
understand how fire has affected
The godwits are back
THE AVON-Heathcote Estuary
Trust, Te Raekura Redcliffs
School and Ngāti Wheke will
meet at 2pm today at the estuary
to welcome the return of the
godwits.
The first waves of bar-tailed
godwits came back to the Avon
Heathcote Estuary/Ihutai last
week, following their annual migration
from the northern arctic.
Godwits take a 11,500km diagonal
flyway across the central
Pacific Ocean from the Alaskan
coast directly to coastal habitats
in Pegasus Bay and Banks Peninsula.
They do this in six-to-eight
days non-stop and lose half their
body weight in the process as
they burn up fat reserves.
“The godwits arrival on
Wednesday, 11 September is
a few days later than their 9
September arrival in 2023 and
7 September arrival in 2022,”
said city council parks ecologist
Andrew Crossland.
“On Wednesday afternoon, 228
birds were counted. This was 56
more birds than the day before
when council staff confirmed
that the over-wintering flock
of 171 juveniles were present
without any newcomers evident.
More flocks arrived overnight
and by Thursday noon, 441 birds
were on the estuary.”
More surges are expected as
TOUCHDOWN: The godwits are making their annual return
to the estuary.
PHOTO: NEWSLINE
numbers build to 1000-1500
birds on the estuary by early
November, with another 300-450
at Brooklands Lagoon, Lyttelton
Harbour and Lake Ellesmere.
Migratory birds escaping the
arctic winter don’t just come to
New Zealand from Alaska, but
also migrate over the western
Pacific or pass over the east
coast of the Asian mainland, the
Philippines and New Guinea.
Most of these birds are much
smaller than godwits and fly as
far as 15,000km from breeding
grounds in Siberia.
“This year the godwits were
beaten by a Siberian species,
the red knot, with two of these
migrants reaching the estuary
on Tuesday, 10 September,
increasing to five on Wednesday
and six on Thursday,” Crossland
said.
“They’re about half the size of a
godwit and are the second-most
abundant Arctic migrant in
New Zealand, with thousands
flying to Northland and Farewell
Spit in Golden Bay. Between
50-100 red knots are found in
the Christchurch area each year,
with most at Lake Ellesmere.”
People wishing to see the
godwits are advised to view
them from a distance to avoid
disturbance and ensure dogs are
kept well away.
Collaboration key to
protecting Port Hills
• From page 1
In addition to the local management
plans and green firebreaks,
the plan also aims to integrate
community plant and animal
pest control, and favour planting
low-flammability native species
more than highly flammable invasive
species.
Green firebreaks are wide strips
of vegetation made up of low flammability
plants.
Hillsides can be problematic
for the effectiveness of green
firebreaks, but they remain a useful
tool to slow or stop fire fronts and
block radiant heat.
Pauling believes new collaboration
of knowledge, resources,
tactics and technologies will best
protect the Port Hills from future
fires which may become more
common with climate change.
Lincoln University associate
professor Tim Curran said the
new strategy should have a
“multifaceted” approach.
“Multiple layers (of actions) improve
success, and in the context of
the Port Hills that means firefighting
strategies, ecological actions
and community engagement,” he
said.
Curran said planting low flammability
plants in the green fire
breaks is key to controlling fire
behaviour.
PREVENTION: It is hoped a
new management strategy
will help avoid a repeat of
the February wildfires.
PHOTO: RNZ
“We can manipulate, to some
degree, the main fuel source,
which in turn can help lessen
the severity and impact of these
fires.”
Sophie Hartnell from Banks
Peninsula Conservation Trust
said green firebreaks have benefits
other than fire mitigation.
“They can improve biodiversity
and provide ecosystem
services, such as providing food
sources, habitat, erosion control
and better soil nutrients.”
She said the firebreaks are also
a way to engage communities
in the process of fire mitigation
when residents plant lowflammability
species in or near
their own properties.
A FORMER ammunition storage
bunker is preserving a rare piece
of maritime history.
Tucked in behind the Naval
Point Club, the Lyttelton Torpedo
Boat Museum is home to the
remains of a spar torpedo boat
built in 1883.
Thornycroft torpedo boat
number 168, named ‘Defender’
was commissioned at Lyttelton in
1884 for defence purposes.
Museum trustee David Bundy
said the London-built boat was
one of four purchased by the
government to protect major
ports around the country against
a perceived naval threat.
“It was at the time when the big
Russian scare was on.”
The predicted war with the
Russian Empire never happened
and the boat spent 15 years on
duty in Lyttelton, manned by
military personnel and volunteers,
before becoming obsolete
and sold for scrap. It was eventually
dumped on the beach at
Purau in 1899.
“We excavated the torpedo boat
in the late nineties, and we had
the job of restoring the building
here first because it was roofless
and abandoned,” Bundy said.
“So we restored the building
while we were putting the torpedo
boat parts together.”
The 19-metre long vessel
was powered by a 173hp steam
engine and had a top speed of 17
knots. It was designed to launch
the spar torpedo mounted on its
bow under the water, powering
it at speed into the side of an
enemy vessel before rapidly
reversing away.
Reuben Marsden, a museum
volunteer and trustee, said it
was great the boat wasn’t needed
to defend the port.
“It was a hidden gem, and if
folks like David Bundy didn’t
dig it up and find it and present
it, this (boat) would be a part of
history. I wouldn’t know, you
wouldn’t know, and many other
people wouldn’t know.”
Marsden, a keen historian,
decided to answer the call to
help out with work to preserve a
rare piece of history.
“With the decline in the
older members who set up the
(preservation group), it’s the
responsibility of the younger
generation to step up, listen to
the stories and make sure we
keep that going,” Marsden said.
The small museum currently
attracts about 500 visitors a
year and Marsden said while
CHEESE WAR: Participants put everything on the line at Broken River Ski Area to get their
hands on a 5kg wheel of Barrys Bay cheese.
High rollers get the cheese
PEOPLE PUT their bodies on
the line in pursuit of a wheel of
cheese at Broken River Ski Area
on Saturday.
Organiser and ski area vice
president Matt Barnes said fresh
snow and big crowds made for
a memorable fourth annual
Barrys Bay Cheese Roll.
“It’s a fun event for everyone,
with everyone having a hilarious
time. There was much laughter
from the sideline as they
watched participants run, slide
and roll down the snow slope,”
he said.
The aim was to chase the large
5kg round of cheese down the
slope, with the winner the first
to catch it.
Participants were encouraged
to dress up, with spot prizes for
the best dressed.
Every year the registration
donation goes to a worthy cause.
This year proceeds went
to Protect Our Winters New
Zealand, which is focused on
keeping winters cool.
A record number of 40 participants
entered the adult section,
with Ollie Chinn and Finn van
der Keulen claiming joint victory.
There were also categories for
under 10 years, under 14, under
18, and masters.
Barnes said the event finished
with a prizegiving, then a
tasting of Barrys Bay cheeses.
Black Pearl’s arrival a
boost for ferry service
BLACK CAT and Metro’s new
Diamond Harbour ferry, Black
Pearl, has begun operations.
Two events were held this month
to celebrate the launch, one for
the community and the other for
officials.
The vessel can carry up to 95
passengers, and will make more
than 290 scheduled trips each
week between Lyttleton and Diamond
Harbour.
This is almost double the capacity
of Black Diamond, the other
Diamond Harbour ferry.
Black Diamond will now be
used as a reserve ferry.
Black Pearl was built by Icon
Custom Boats in Rangiora, and
Black Cat chief executive Paul
Milligan said it had taken a lot of
planning and careful design.
“We are very pleased to have the
Black Pearl in operation.
“A real highlight of having this
new ferry is its capacity. It will
allow for greater accessibility for
customers, including those with
prams or bikes.
“We are relieved to have the ferry
in service after the initial build
of it was delayed due to Covid-19
and the normal teething issues one
might expect with a new boat.”
Environment Canterbury councillor
Vicky Southworth said she
was excited to have the new ferry
in operation.
“It’s amazing to see after years of
hard work and planning. I know
having this extra, bigger vessel
available will be appreciated by the
community.”
The timetable and prices for the
Diamond Harbour ferry service
will remain the same.
Coastguard
Canterbury’s
new base gets
off the ground
• By Geoff Sloan
THE NEW base for Canterbury
search and rescue operations is
taking shape.
Construction of the $2.6 million
headquarters for Coastguard
Canterbury is well under way at
Lyttelton’s Naval Point.
Coastguard Canterbury board
member Carolyn Tapley (above)
said it was a welcome milestone
for the volunteer charity organisation,
after more than a decade
of trying to find a new home.
“We’re very excited. We’ve
waited a long time. We’ve been
in portacoms provided by the
Christchurch City Council for
the past five years.”
The former Coastguard
building was badly damaged
in the 2011 earthquakes. It was
eventually demolished in 2020,
as part of the city council’s Naval
Point redevelopment plan, which
included preparations for the
SailGP regatta.
“The council gave us this land
and gave us a prestige site right
by the public jetty. And we are
the cornerstone project for the
Naval Point development, so
it’s important that we get our
building right and it looks great,”
Tapley said.
Coastguard New Zealand, the
city council and community
donations funded the search
and rescue centre project,
with a $1.5 million grant from
the Christchurch Earthquake
Appeal Trust.
Tapley said $200,000 was still
needed for internal fixtures and
security/electrical fittings.
Coastguard Canterbury has
25 volunteers and three rescue
vessels, based at Lyttelton,
Sumner and Kaiapoi.
But Tapley said demand for its
services is growing.
Last year the organisation
attended 48 calls and brought
158 people home safely.
NEW WHEELS:
Coastguard
Canterbury
is seeking a
replacement
towing tractor
for BBT (Big
blue tractor).
“We’re all volunteers, none
of us get paid. So yeah, it’s been
tough mahi for us, but we are
very passionate about what we
do and we want to get it right for
the community and support our
boating public.”
Once complete, the new
885sq m search and rescue centre
will offer training, meeting and
radio rooms with a harbour
lookout, along with secure
Made with the support
storage for rescue boats and the
towing tractor.
Tapley said they are still trying
to raise funds for the new
centre. After that, they will
turn their attention towards
fundraising for another rescue
boat.
Their towing tractor BBT (Big
blue tractor) is also on its last
legs. Anyone who might be able
to donate a suitable replacement
is encouraged to get in touch.
Coastguard Canterbury hopes
its new centre will be fully
operational by March.
Hagley parking fees a contentious move
• By Dylan Smits
PARKING FEES are coming
to four carparks in Hagley
Park, bringing in an estimated
$2.1 million a year for the city
council, but what do motorists
think about the change?
A StarNews online poll shows
an overwhelming 84 per cent
against the parking fees with
just 16 per cent in favour.
The carparks at the Horticultural
Centre, Hagley Oval and
Armagh St and Riccarton Ave
entrances to the Botanic Gardens
will have parking fees from
October 28.
It will cost $2 for the first hour
and $1.30 for each
additional hour,
up to a maximum
of $4.60 for the
three-hour time
limit.
StarNews asked
passersby in
Hagley Park what
they thought of the fees and
found a mixed views.
Helen Randell tries to park at
the Armagh St Botanic Gardens
carpark most weekends and
believes the change could free
up the carpark by reducing the
time cars are parked.
“There seems to be a lot of
workers who park there all day,
so it could help in getting people
City council head of parks
Rupert Bool said the intake
from the fees will help keep
rates lower and improve parking
availability.
“Charging for parking and
formalising the time limits
means more
turnover among
vehicles, which
means more
spots will become
available more
often for visitors,”
he said.
Judy Whiteley
strongly disapproves of the
parking fees and said she will be
looking for new places to park
in the city.
“It’s a total disgrace in my
opinion. They want to make you
pay for parking everywhere in
town. Are they saying that nowhere
in town should be free?”
Neil Birch said the prices were
acceptable but he would prefer it
if the carparks remained free.
“Maybe it might help with
rates and what not, but it’s
pretty annoying.”
Some motorists like Sam Xu
were unsure of their views on
the fees. He will withhold judgement
until he sees the results.
“If there’s more space to park
there, that’s good,” he said.
New signage and 35 parking
meters will be installed at the
four carparks.
City councillors approved the
decision to charge fees in June
when the Long Term Plan was
adopted.
Supermarkets
suspended from
selling alcohol
A planting day was held
on the weekend as part of
a commitment to restore
the health of Whakaraupō
Lyttleton Harbour and its
surrounding catchments.
Te Hapū o Ngāti Wheke
initiated the day, with staff
from Verve Projects Ltd,
Kotahi Engineering Studio,
Rhodes and Associates and
CA Architecture lending
a hand. Recent rain and
great soil made for relatively
easy work, with more than
700 trees planted along
the slopes of Te Poho o
Tamatea at Rāpaki. Te Hapū
days as part of Whaka Ora
CHRISTCHURCH New World
stores are among 32 which
will have their off-licenses
suspended for 48 hours for
breaching online alcohol
advertising rules.
The Alcohol Regulation and
Licensing Authority released
its reserved decision last week,
ordering a 48-hour suspension
of the supermarkets’ licences
to sell alcohol in the South
Island.
Police inspector Ian Paulin
sought the suspension of liquor
licences for a total 35 New
World stores for an alleged
violation of The Sale and Supply
of Alcohol Act earlier this year.
The breaches relate to the
online promotion of DB Export
Gold and Ultra Low Carb
products on January 9 that
was advertised at a 26.1 per
cent mark down for club card
owners.
Under Section 237 1B of the
Act, the promotion of discounts
of alcohol products of more
than 25 per cent is prohibited,
unless on licensed premises.
A two-day hearing in front
of the Alcohol Regulatory and
Licensing Authority was held in
the district court last month.
It included stores in
Christchurch, Alexandra,
Ashburton, Balclutha,
Blenheim, Cromwell, Dunedin,
Kaikoura, Oamaru, Wānaka,
Westport and Queenstown.
In its decision, the authority
found 32 of the stores in breach,
suspending their off-licences
for 48 hours – most of which
will begin at 7am on Tuesday,
October 8.
In a statement, police said it
was “clear, fair and transparent”
throughout the process.
“(Police) previously warned
the chain for the same breach
including advertising a 50
per cent discount, double the
allowed 25 per cent.
“Police are dedicated to seeing
less alcohol-related harm in our
communities, and ensuring
licence holders are responsibly
selling alcohol is key.”
There are 40 New World
stores throughout the South
Island.
All girls rugby team
planned for peninsula
• By Sam Coughlan
DIAMOND Harbour is setting
up its first girls only rugby team
next season, in conjunction
with the Banks Peninsula and
Waihora clubs.
Harbour currently has only
mixed gender teams at junior
level, and no senior women’s side.
But when junior club captain
Hannah Riden realised her
daughter Keira, who turned 14
this year, would be too old to
keep playing in a mixed grade,
she took action.
“There were no girls teams locally,
so she’d have to go to town.
I felt that was . . . not really fair,”
she said.
Riden spoke to the Waihora
and Banks Peninsula clubs to see
if they were interested in joining
forces to create an all-girls team
for the 2025 season to play in
the Ellesmere competition – and
they were on board.
The team will be called Matapuna,
which means “all the
springs on the peninsula and
how they connect”, representing
the clubs joining forces. The
name was suggested by Elizabeth
Cunningham from Koukourārata
marae at Port Levy, who
received King’s Birthday honours
for services to governance.
“Traditional rugby can be very
much about the clubs and we’re
just trying to sort of bypass that.
Whatever we can set up so that
the girls can play, that’s what it’s
about,” Riden said.
“I believe that there are girls
who want to play who don’t
want to play with boys, they
would rather be with their girl
mates. I know what it’s like, I’ve
got daughters (Keira, Luka and
Ava, who all play for Diamond
Harbour).
“In Diamond Harbour, with
the rugby club being the only
sports club, we need to really
be on board to support the girls
getting that exercise and getting
good habits when they’re young.”
Riden said she’d had positive
feedback from high places –
notably Black Fern siblings Alana
and Chelsea Bremner, who are
originally from Little River.
“They were involved in a push
last year to try and get girls rugby
going,” she said.
“It sort of fell to the wayside
because there was no one
organising, so this year they’ve
got me on board as well.”
CLUB REDCLIFFS has been named the
Bowls New Zealand Club of the Year.
Bowling clubs are increasingly finding
their future in being a community hub
which plays bowls, rather than a bowling
club which plays in the community. And
there aren’t many clubs doing it better
than Club Redcliffs, Bowls NZ says.
Acutely aware of the challenges facing
single-sport clubs of all kinds, Redcliffs
Mt Pleasant Bowls Club underwent a
strategic planning process which led to a
complete rebrand and name change.
The club now has a flourishing social
membership and a growing bowls section.
“Back in 2021, the bowls club realised
that to survive and prosper, they needed
to become a community hub. There was
no future in being just another bowling
club in Christchurch,” said Bowls Canterbury
general manager Lorraine McLeod.
Club Redcliffs brought its repositioning
to life with a complete upgrade of its
facilities with a new outside seating area,
a new bar doubling the size of the service
area, and an upgraded functions area.
“They invited the local RSA to make
their home at the club,” McLeod said.
“They started providing meals on
Thursday and Friday evenings. They also
established business house bowls and
schools programmes. And last year they
ran an outstanding community open day
in conjunction with Redcliffs School and
WINNER: Club Redcliffs is the result of Redcliffs Mt Pleasant Bowls Club
deciding to move away from the traditional club structure.
the Air Rescue Trust.”
“Club Redcliffs is a real role model
for other bowling clubs,” said Bowls NZ
community manager Kevin Smith.
“They have opened up to the community,
and as a result, the community has
opened up to them.”
Said Club Redcliffs board chair Jim
Keegan: “We are, of course, delighted
to receive this accolade, which we
believe highlights one of the keys to
sustainability – engaging with the
community and exploring multiple
revenue streams.”
The race to reunite a dying man
The beloved bike on
which Christchurch
cyclist Rob Appleton
rode the length of the
country for charity has
been stolen. He now
has six months to live
and is hoping to give
Big Jeff one last ride.
He shares his story with
Jogai Bhatt
ROB APPLETON remembers
the moment he crossed the finish
line in Bluff. The 59-year-old had
cycled the length of New Zealand
in 24 days, covering more than
100 kilometres each day, to raise
money for Pet Refuge as part of
Tour Aotearoa.
It was the cycling adventure of a
lifetime and according to Appleton,
it wouldn’t have been possible
without Big Jeff – his second-hand,
red Surly Bridge Club bike, lovingly
named for its chunky tyres.
Big Jeff was perfect – sturdy,
with drop handlebars and a
distinctive coating. It was a timely
purchase in 2020, just six months
before the tour began.
Of course, Appleton, a cyclist his
entire life, had already collected an
impressive number of bikes by that
point but the Trade Me listing for
Big Jeff was just too tempting.
TRUSTY STEED: Rob Appleton’s beloved bike, Big Jeff, was stolen in Christchurch. Now,
he’s in a race against time to get it back. In 2021, Big Jeff carried Appleton on his 3000km
journey from Cape Reinga to Bluff with dog George watching on from a campervan.
Appleton reached out to a bloke
in Raglan and bought the bike
immediately.
In 2021, Big Jeff carried Appleton
on his 3000km journey, all the
way from Cape Reinga to Bluff.
His daughter, Kate, remembers
the feeling of seeing her nearly
60-year-old dad on such an
adventure.
“It was bloody awesome to
see him; I really loved his daily
updates. He’d show pictures of
his day and they would always
include so much cool scenery,
and there’d always be a picture
of his dog George.
“George and (Appleton’s partner)
Ana were following him
in a campervan along the way,
and George was quite a trooper
throughout because he found
the whole journey sitting in a
van very exhausting.
“But yeah, it made me think, I
haven’t done anything cool with
my life, so I need to do this ride
one day, too. I’ll need to do a
hell of a lot of training.”
For Appleton, the idea to do
Tour Aotearoa was sparked one
day at work. A community mental
health nurse for 33 years, one
day a colleague mentioned that
a client was preparing to do the
cycle tour.
Appleton’s ears pricked up –
he loved cycling, and it was cool
to track this client’s progress on
a GPS tracker.
“Every day, I would log into
the computer and see where this
client was, and she completed it.
I was nearing 60 and I thought,
if she can do it, I don’t have any
excuse.”
By the time she had completed
the tour, the seed had been
sown, and Appleton knew he
would do it too one day.
NEWS 25
with Big Jeff – his beloved bike
“From time to time during my
life, I’ve embarked on these mad
ventures on my pushbike, and so I
thought, this could be yet another
adventure. That was the seed of it,
really.”
The journey followed a combination
of cycle trails, tracks, paths
and lanes connected by beautiful
country roads. George and Ana
were right there behind them,
offering food and supplies and a
place to sleep at the end of each
cycling day.
It was smooth sailing – almost.
As Appleton was biking out of
Harihari on the West Coast,
on the final stretch of his South
Island trail, he and Big Jeff faced
an incident involving a couple of
“feral” dogs.
“I was passing a barn property,
these two dogs came racing out
and they followed me along the
fence line. I thought, ‘oh yeah, this
is cool’. Then they slipped under
the fence and started chasing me
down the road. I thought, ‘you
little buggers!’. I tried to outpace
them, but they were keeping up.”
Then, Appleton was saved by an
unlikely source.
“My ride was powered by OSM
bars. I would have four to five of
them a day, roughly one an hour.
At a certain point (of the chase),
I realised I had this half-eaten
OSM bar in my back pocket, so I
INSPIRING: Rob’s daughter Kate remembers how she felt
seeing her dad cycling the length of New Zealand – a journey
which took him 24 days.
just tossed it like a grenade onto
the road, and it distracted them
sufficiently for me to be able to get
away.
“If I didn’t have that OSM bar, I
have a feeling I would’ve been in
for a mauling. One of them was a
big dog.”
Appleton and Big Jeff survived
the incident, and completed their
great adventure.
A couple of years later, Appleton
decided to relocate to
Christchurch.
Kate, and her partner Lewis,
were coincidentally moving
down at around the same time.
Appleton and Ana would soon be
moving into an apartment, and
he already had a few extra bikes.
He knew it was a good time to
downsize.
Appleton gave Big Jeff to Lewis
on a long-term loan, and Lewis
happily rode it to work every day.
Big Jeff was fast, and Lewis took
very good care of it.
Then one day in August 2023,
the bike was stolen from Kate
and Lewis’ flat.
“It didn’t fully hit me (when it
got stolen), but Lewis was filled
with guilt,” Kate said.
“He was like, ‘Oh no, I’m gonna
have to tell Rob, I can’t believe
this. I feel terrible’. But dad took
it really well.”
Appleton thought maybe the
theft was a sign to get a new bike
– contents insurance had covered
the cost, and he had the money to
replace it.
But in the end, Appleton did
not buy another – Big Jeff was
irreplaceable.
Since the theft, tragedy struck.
Just a month after moving to
Christchurch in November 2023,
about a week before Christmas,
Appleton found out he had stage
four esophageal cancer.
Shock news spurs hunt for bike
•From page 25
“I was aware there was something
going on internally because
I was a long-term donor of platelets.
In October, my haemoglobin
levels suddenly plunged, and they
were like, ‘We’re sorry, you can’t
donate today. Get yourself to a
doctor and sort it out’.”
An endoscope and CT scan
confirmed the devastating news.
“Initially, they thought it was
operable, but once they looked at
the CT scan, they discovered it
was grade four and had gone to
my glands. It was quite traumatic
really, being told that.”
Appleton then had the tough
job of delivering the news to his
family.
“My partner was devastated,
and my parents are still alive. My
father took it very badly. My mum
was okay, she’s a bit of a stoic, but
dad tends to wear his heart on his
sleeve these days.”
Kate was at work when she
heard the news. Her phone was on
silent, and Lewis had been trying
to reach her. After a bit of phone
tag, he finally got a hold of her.
“He said, ‘I’m downstairs’ and I
was like, ‘Oh, you’re at work?’ because
he doesn’t work close to me.
I came downstairs and he said, ‘I
think you’re finishing work for the
day.’ He took me to these hidden
oak trees in the carpark and told
WELL-TRAVELLED: Appleton is hopeful he will be reunited with Big Jeff for one last ride.
me, and I just lost it.
“Ana was there, and I immediately
got on the phone with my
sister, Grace, who lives in Wales.
I said, ‘I think you need to book a
flight to come here now, because
I think we need to spend one last
Christmas with dad’.”
It was a horrible day, but
the Appletons did not want to
remember it that way. That very
same day, Appleton decided he
would not be going back to work
– so Kate threw him a retirement
party.
We were like, you might not
“I still cycle around town.
Christchurch is a great
cycling city – it’s also a
great city for stolen bikes
unfortunately.”
– Rob Appleton
get to 65 to get your Gold Card,
but let’s retire. We partied with
bubbles and this giant black
forest cake, and tried to make
something out of a really horrible,
awful day.”
Appleton was given a prognosis
of about three months, without
treatment. It was a time of great
uncertainty – he was deeply
unwell, had difficulty swallowing,
was in quite a lot of internal pain,
and had lost a great deal of weight.
“I was just wasting away,”
Appleton said.
Towards the end of January
2024, he learned there had been
an error with his referral. It had
not gone through, so he engaged
with a private oncologist who
started him off on his first dose
of chemotherapy, and continued
with the referral to oncology.
Since then, Kate has been on a
mission to reunite her dad with
his beloved Big Jeff.
She reported the theft to
the police and 529 Garage – a
registration service for bikes
that records serial numbers and
She has had no luck so far, but
is not losing hope. And neither is
Appleton.
If Big Jeff is somehow found,
Appleton wants to go on one last
adventure.
“Ideally, if I was to do one last
ride, it would be Sound to Sound,
from Queen Charlotte Sound
to Milford Sound, but that’s
completely unrealistic and deconditioned
to cycling.
“I still cycle around town.
Christchurch is a great cycling
city – it’s also a great city for stolen
bikes unfortunately. Probably
just a cycle around Hagley Park
would be beautiful.”
And Kate will be right there
beside him.
“I’ll probably be on my crappy
bike that was free off the side of
the road with a sign on it. That’s
kind of my dream.”
Te Aratai College:
Embracing Tradition and Teamwork
Kī-o-Rahi is a traditional Māori ball sport
gaining significant popularity across Aotearoa,
particularly in kura, as a sign of cultural revival
and whanaungatanga. The game is steeped
in Māori tradition, with its origins linked to the
pūrākau of Rahi, a Māori ancestor.
According to the pūrākau, the game is based
on the story of Rahitūtakahina and the rescue
of his wife, Tīarakurapakewai. Her kidnappers
evoked powerful atua and magic to hinder
Rahi in his rescue attempts, forcing him to
circumvent a second sun, vine-thick forests,
taniwha and desert tundras. Rahi used the
skills and strategies now reflected in Kī-o-Rahi
to navigate these challenges, making the
game, not just a sport but also a way to engage
in Te ao Māori.
of our cultural heritage. Te Aratai College
has embraced and championed Kī-o-
Rahi since 2014 and we are now avid
competitors. Jesse Harding, Head of Sport
has been the coach of the Kī-o-Rahi team
for the last seven years.
“When I started in 2017, we won the
regional tournament and qualified for
nationals. We attended and placed
11th. We won again in 2018 and 2019
in the Waitaha/Canterbury regionals.
The competition and whanaungatanga
it nurtures, it has been inspiring to see
Kī-o-Rahi used as a vehicle to engage
rangatahi into te ao Māori. And it’s so
much more than just a sport. As a team
we trained and toured together and also
participated in noho and wānanga at
Te Puna Wānaka, with many thanks to
Heperi Harris and The Kutt: Functional
Fitness.”
In April the Te Aratai Kī-o-Rahi team
qualified for the Nationals that took
place in sun-soaked Gisborne. There
were 36 teams from around the
country that qualified and took part in
Jury Tipa-Tuhura, Lincoln Siataga-
Nelson-Albrett and Raniera Babbington
the tournament. Te Aratai finished 19th, with
four wins and four losses. “We were proud of
this performance and result. Every game we
lost was close and the team did extremely
well.” The team are off to the South Island
Tournament this weekend. They have finished
3rd the in last two years at the event, and
are looking to finish this year on a high note
with their senior players LJ Beattie, Jury Tipa-
Tuhura and Raniera Babbington wrapping up
their 5-year high school legacy as Te Aratai
College Kī-o-Rahi teammates.
LJ Beattie
The sport involves two teams, each with seven
or eight players, and is played on a circular
field divided into zones. The game is played
with varying rules depending on the geographic
area it is played. A process called Tatū, before
the game, determines which rules the two
teams will use. The objective is to score points
by hitting a central tupu/target with the Kī/ball,
while also defending your zone. The dynamic
nature of the game, which combines elements
of rugby, netball, and touch football, makes it
both physically challenging and strategically
engaging.
Kī-o-Rahi has seen a resurgence in recent
years, attributed to efforts by educators and
community leaders to promote traditional Māori
sports, recognizing them as vital components
GOLD: Hunter Smith won the basic novice boys’ competition.
Nationals next for
successful skaters
• By Sam Coughlan
THE CENTAURUS Ice Skating
Club is turning its attention to
the nationals after picking up
a haul of medals at the North
Island championships at the
weekend.
Centaurus had eight competitors
in Auckland for the competition
and took home five golds
and two bronzes.
Hunter Smith won the basic
novice boys’ competition, and
older sister Eva Smith placed
third in the juvenile girls.
Juliette Miller won the juvenile
girls’ event and then made it two
golds when she combined with
Timothy Sampson to win the
free dance competition. Sampson
also won the adult interpretive
silver event.
Izzy Hack won youth interpretive
silver and Coco Flood was
third in girls’ basic novice.
Claira McDowell competed but
didn’t medal.
All except Flood will be in
action at the national championships,
which will be hosted
by Centaurus at the Alpine Ice
Sports Centre from October 17-
20. It will be the first time since
2016 the competition has been
held in Christchurch.
Committee member Clare
Attenborough said the North Island
competition served as good
preparation for the skaters ahead
of nationals.
“For us it was a case of more
competition exposure, more
feedback for their skating, and
different competition,” she said.
“In the South Islands, you
tend to compete against similar
people all the time, so you’ve
got different competition and
people who will be competing at
nationals.”
BALANCE: Izzy Hack, left, competing in the youth interpretive silver competition where
she won gold. Juliette Miller won the juvenile girls’ competition.
Outlander may not excite, won’t disappoint
MITSUBISHI’S mid-size
Outlander is on track to eclipse,
yes that’s the name of its smaller
sibling, its competitors and
become the company’s biggest
selling passenger vehicle in New
Zealand.
It was second behind the
market leading Toyota RAV4
on our best selling SUV charts
for 2023. Launched here at
the end of 2021 the Outlander
arrived here as the first model
off the production line from
the Mitsubishi, Nissan, Renault
alliance. Its success provided a
dream start for this partnership.
The current Outlander was big
step-up in every department over
the model it replaced, which had
clocked close to 10 years on our
market.
As expected from a model
that’s a product of an automotive
alliance, the parts bins of the
respective partners were raided to
create it.
The 2.5L naturally aspirated
4-cylinder motor is borrowed
from the Nissan X-Trail, but
heavily revised for its double life
in these two models. A decent
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
rejig of Mitsubishi’s highly
regarded Super-All Wheel
Control system enhances both
safety and road holding. As with
the previous Outlander, this one
also offers the people-carrying
flexibility of a third row of seats,
on all but the entry-level LS
version.
While the styling doesn’t send
the heart racing, it won’t spark
a bout of yawning. Clean and
uncluttered contemporary lines
are a little too generic to stand
out from the automotive crowd,
being more of a blend-in type.
A facelift is due in the next 12
months to provide a welcome
visual refresh.
New underpinnings improve
safety, body strength and
steering stability, while multilink
suspension and dual pinion
electric power steering raises the
ride quality and comfort bar.
The Outlander’s 10-year
150,000km new vehicle warranty
is one of the better ones here,
although some rivals are starting
to catch-up. This warranty has
been around for more than
a decade and isn’t the game
changer it once was.
Mitsubishi new vehicle buyers
get a far better deal across the
ditch with a 10-year, 200,000km
warranty and 10 years of capped
servicing. It might be time for
Mitsubishi NZ to match what
their Aussie mates are getting
and stretch their warranty to
match theirs.
The six-model range is evenly
split between two and four-wheel
drive models in three trim levels
– LS, XLS and high spec VRX.
Prices start at $41,990 for the
2WD LS and top out at $75,990
for the flagship PHEV (Plug-in
hybrid electric). These are less
attractive these days with the
clean car fee rebate gone, and
plug-in vehicle owners paying
RUC from 1 April at the rate
of $53 for every 1000km. For
this road test we are putting the
$57,990 VRX through its paces.
Engine choice is limited
to a 135kW 2.5L motor or
185kW PHEV. Having to haul,
depending on the model, an SUV
weighing anything up to 1575kg
is a big ask for this modest motor,
but livelier with the PHEV power
train.
It’s mostly under load when
driving over hilly terrain that
the engine’s energy levels begin
to flag and progress slows. A
3600rpm doesn’t really get the
job done that convincingly.
Pleasantly smooth and
responsive on flatter going, there
past slower moving traffic.
More power and torque would
make a huge difference to the
drivability of a vehicle that
deserves a more purposeful
engine. Its 185kW plug-in
hybrid sibling is an option but
the steep $15k premium for this
technology could be an obstacle
for many.
A well resolved eight-speed
sport mode continuously variable
transmission (CVT) is one of
Mitsubishi’s best. Step shift
control changes do a fine job
of mimicking a conventional
automatic, with few slurring
gear shifts that were once
an undesirable trait of these
transmissions.
A generously proportioned
passenger compartment earns
top marks for spaciousness,
practicality and being a relaxing
long distance cruiser. Upping the
comfort ante on the test vehicle
were heated seats, three-zone
automatic climate control, and
rear door sunshades.
The three rows of seats can
be easily arranged in multiple
configurations to suit the
number of passengers you have
and any luggage. There’s good
smartphone storage with the
centre console tray including
wireless phone charging.
A smart bit of tech is the ability
to remotely start the engine and
turn on the air conditioner to
make the cabin nice and comfy
ahead of entering the vehicle.
A 12.3-inch full digital driver
display is Mitsubishi’s first fullscreen,
full-color liquid crystal
display, projecting a variety of
information on to a large screen
with exceptional clarity. A
customisation function enables a
variety of information to be easily
combined and displayed.
One of the standouts, and
there are plenty on this vehicle’s
safety manifesto, is MI-PILOT
Assist offering several different
functions, including maintaining
a safe distance between your
vehicle and the one in front. It’s
Mitsubishi’s twist on radar cruise
control.
The test vehicle’s six drive
modes are accessed via a centre
console mounted selector, and
range from normal to snow, and
almost everything in-between.
The suspension tune is very
much in-tune with our often
exacting driving conditions
and topography. It makes an
immediate impression with
its strong road holding, even
when you quicken the pace over
demanding undulating roads.
While the 20-inch alloys make
a powerful visual statement, the
ride quality suffers, with more
suspension noise at low speed over
high frequency bumps typically
found on our urban roads.
We need your help to fill our beds.
Cholmondeley Children’s Centre has
23 beds for tamariki to stay during
times of whānau stress or crisis. On
average just 17 of these beds are filled
due to resourcing constraints.
Every empty bed is a missed
opportunity to support a child in need.
tamariki a safe place to sleep.
Cholmondeley Children’s Centre provides
short term emergency or planned respite care
for tamariki when they need extra support due
to complications at home.
Cholmondeley is an independent charity
and costs just under $3,000,000 per year to
run. 20% of this figure is met by Government
funding, and the remaining 80% comes from
the generous support of the Canterbury
