Cheviot helipad acommunity effort
By JOHN COSGROVE
Seventeen months of hard work by many
in the Cheviot community has helped
deliver an allweather helipad in
Cheviot.
It was officially opened last Friday
with the Canterbury Rescue Helicopter
the guestofhonour at afunction to
celebrate the milestone in the small
rural town.
In April last year, the Cheviot
Volunteer Fire Brigade approached the
Cheviot Lions Club for help in creating a
permanent helipad in Cheviot.
They wanted to change their usual
helipad, astretch of grass next to the
rugby club rooms, into apermanent, lit,
allweather one, negating the need for
the brigade to turn out every time there
was an incident to light up the area in
the dark when arescue chopper was due
to land.
They proposed that the Lions would
be responsible for fundraising and the
brigade could organise its construction.
With abudget of $90,000, the Cheviot
Lions, organised by Giles Pinfold,
started the ball rolling.
The Hurunui District Council was
approached for help and guidance.
The Lions then went to the Canterbury
West Coast Air Rescue Trust who
offered technical assistance, and later
funds to supply lights, awindsock and a
radio control system.
Through local fundraising over the
next eight months, the Lions Club soon
reached its target and set about helping
the fire brigade organise the
construction of the new concrete
helipad.
Giles says many local businesses and
suppliers in Cheviot and the
surrounding areas graciously stepped
up to assist with the project.
‘‘With all their help, the concrete was
poured on April 6and the lights were
installed in early June.
‘‘On June 15, the day after we had
installed the remotely controlled lights,
the helipad was used for the first time
covering anight emergency.’’
He says it was awonderful feeling to
see the community come together to
New arrival ... The crew and officials from the Canterbury West Coast Air Rescue Trust beside their new H145 air ambulance which was
make the project asuccess.
Hurunui District Mayor Marie Black
says one can never underestimate the
importance of having arescue
helicopter able to land and recover sick
family members for specialist care. ‘‘I
remember the kindness and words of
comfort as Iwas trying to make sense of
the moment as they attended to one of
my children in the back as we flew to the
hospital rather than having to drive
there.’’
She says what the Cheviot Lions, Fire
Brigade, rescue services and the
community had done will catalyse many
other communities in the district to look
at ways to optimise outcomes for patient
care.
CEO of Canterbury West Coast Air
Rescue Trust, Christine Prince, thanked
the community for their support and
says over the next couple of years they
are undertaking a$1.4 million
fundraising campaign to help fund new
helicopters capable of safely flying in all
weathers to optimise patient care. The
trust demonstrated this new ability to fly
by instruments, dispatching their latest
H145 helicopter to Cheviot, in very
marginal rain and cloud conditions.
Local author inspires students
ByROBYN BRISTOW
ChildrenatStPatrick’s School in
Kaiapoi have found anew zest for
writing after avisit by local picture
book author,Jennifer Somervell.
Principal Trish McKendry said the
visit had an amazing impact.
‘‘We have had lots of inspired authors
writing.’’
Children ‘s imaginations were
stimulatedbyJennifer’s Curly Cat
puppet, ahandmade cat character with
asuperlong, curly tail.
Ruben, apupil said Jennifer inspired
the pupils to be creative and to imagine
more, while Anna said she was inspired
to write her own books.
Jaxx, apupil, was also inspired by
Jennifer, saying she really liked her
coming in and telling them how hard it
was to be an author, and how muchfun
it was.
‘‘Now lots of people in school are
trying to make their own books,’’ Jaxx
said.
Jennifer encouraged the students to
improve their stories by revision.
‘‘That’s how you build layers into your
writing and give it depth,’’ she said.
One of the funniest parts of her visit
had been watching Year 7and 8pupils
role play, squealing like escaping pigs.
‘‘Jennifer brought so much joy into
writing,’’ Paige said.
Jennifer has written nine books,
seven of which are illustrated by her
sister, Margery Fern, based on their
childhood experiences growing up on
the family farm in the 1970s.
Their first book, the popular The Day
Dad Blew Up the Cowshed came from a
desire to capture their family stories.
The latest title, The Flight of My Life,
has just won afirstplace award in
History Non fiction in the Purple
Dragonfly Book Awards,2024.
Curly Cat and ABaabrilliant
Adventure are her fictional titles
illustrated by Zerikavan Jaarsveld.
Jennifer travels to schools
nationwide encouraging children to
write about their own adventures.
Magnificent mathematicians in Nth Canty
By JOHN COSGROVE
Victories were guaranteed thanks to
swift computations generated by
teams of North Canterbury school
children as they harnessed the
power of numbers at the North
Canterbury Cantamaths competition
recently.
Held at the Ohoka Hall, teamsof
four students raced against the clock,
and each other, to solve complex
mathematical questions.
Once the team had worked out the
answer, their runner raced to the
marking table to be told ‘yes’ or ‘no’.
If the answer was no, the runner got
the opportunity to take the question
back to their table for another try.
If the answer was yes, then the next
question was issued to the team.
The competition began with 28,
Year 6, teams competing.
After 30 minutes of intense
concentration Rangiora Borough
School came out on top with 65
points.
Tihiraki North Loburn were
second on 60 points and Ashgrove
third after atie break question with
Amberley, as both had ended up on
40 points.
In the Year 7competition, 26 teams
competed, with Ohoka finishing first
on 85 points, Swannanoa second
after atie break with West Eyreton
who were third, as both finished on
70 points.
The Year 8competition, with its 28
teams, saw aclosely contested fight
with St Josephs School finally
finishing in first place with 80 points,
while Kaiapoi North School were
second on 75 points and Ashgrove
third, also on 75 again followingatiebreaker.
Kaiapoi High School students who
had competed in the North
Area Schools under pressure
By DAVID HILL,
Local Democracy Reporter
ANorth Canterbury principal says area
schools are ‘‘copping it in all directions’’
with changes to education.
Amuri Area School principal Matt
Barlow has written to Education
Minister Erica Stanford to ask whether
the pace of change can be slowed down.
Area schools cover all year levels from
new entrants to Year 13, tend to be
smaller and are based in rural areas,
meaning they face pressures to
implement curriculum changes across
the board.
‘‘Schools like Rangiora High School
don’t have to worry about Year 1to3
literacy and numeracy, and primary
schools don’t have to worry about
changes to NCEA.
‘‘We are abit of an after thought. Area
schools are like an airport and
principals are like air traffic
controllers, with planes coming from all
directions.’’
While some rural school rolls are
falling, Amuri Area School is managing a
growing roll.
After beginning last year with 335
students, the roll is now 380, which
includes its largest roll of Year 7s (50)
and Year 13s (22).
Mr Barlow said the school is working
with the Ministry of Education to design
anew building for science, technology
and arts classes.
No budget or timeframe has been
decided.
Amuri Area School is in Culverden, on
the way to Hanmer Springs, and the
relative isolation adds to the challenges.
The relief teacher pool is limited,
meaning Mr Barlow and his two deputy
principals have had to step into the
classroom several times this year.
Roger Hornblow became principal at
Cheviot Area School in term four last
Literacy ... Matt Barlow checks up on aclass of year 7/8 students at Amuri Area School.
year, having been along serving primary
school principal.
‘‘Area schools are very complex and I
don’t think it is appreciated by
everybody.
‘‘We are dealing with the NCEA
changes and the year 0to8changes. It is
really complex.
‘‘But that is part and parcel of the
beast and we need to make sure we do it
in away which give students the best
outcomes.’’
It means professional development is
constant, and Mr Hornblow is pleased
with how his staff are stepping up.
He would like to see ‘‘a unified
education policy’’ which did not change
every time there is achange of
Government.
Aconvenient tool for rural crime prevention
By ROBYN BRISTOW
Criminal activity is expected to step up
in rural North Canterburyasthe weather
starts to warm up, Police warn.
In response Police are encouraging
people to download the Rural Lookout
app, which was launched back in May
2022, to help report suspicious incidents.
Through the app, free security
assessments are being offered to rural
property owners in the Hurunui district
0.4ha or larger.
Sergeant Rob Irvine of Amberley
Police says twothirds of rural burglaries
and thefts occur at properties with little
or no security.
‘‘We know rural communities want to
prevent crime and harm, so offering free
security assessments, and subsidised
security equipment, is agreat step
towards this.’’
Mayor Marie Black has lived rurally in
Hurunui all her life and supports the app
as away of reporting suspicious activity
easily and effectively.
‘‘After chatting with local police, it
seems clear that too many incidents of
rural crime go unreported, which makes
the jobs of police much more difficult.’’
Sergeant Irvine and Mrs Black agreed
increased security is never abad idea.
They hope the free security
assessment will be an incentive.
The Rural Lookout app compliments
Police’s reporting channels —111, 105,
105online, along with local station
reporting.
At September 1, the app had been
downloaded across the Hurunui and
Waimakariri districts 4466 times, and
more than 565 reports have been logged.
Suspicious persons or vehicles made
up the majority of the reports, as well as
antisocial road use, wilful damage,
along with the flight path of some drones.
Users can attach photos and add aGPS
location, through the geolocation
function.
Fiftyfouryears ago, John Philp, anew
recruit at the Waikari Volunteer Fire
Brigade in North Canterbury, faced his
first fire, which he inadvertently lit
himself.
Finishing up for the day at his new job
working for the Waipara County Council as
adigger driver, he decided to burn apile
of rubbish he and another driver had made
while clearing out aditch.
‘‘It was dead quiet and hot, not abreath
of wind all day, but the moment Idropped
the match into the pile, anor’wester
sprung up, and the fire tookoff up the side
of the hill.
‘‘We both thought we were goners and
that was the end of our jobs.’’
His mate had to race away to find a
house with aworking phone to call 111, but
John said he was surprised how many
passing motorists stopped, pulled sacks
and shovels from their car boots and
started beating down the flames.
John had just arrived in Waikari from
the West Coast and knew noone there.
His association with the councilrunfire
brigade came about through his work.
There were 15 to 20 brigade members at
the time, including the local publican,
shopkeepers, farmers and farm hands.
‘‘The chief owned the local garage next
to the shed we used as astation.
‘‘He lived above it, so he was always the
first there on callouts.’’
John Philp senior, is one of afamily of
firefightersstill answering the call when
the siren goes off in Hawarden /Waikari.
His son, John BPhilp, awellknown
shearing contractor in the district, joined
in 1991, aged 28. John B’s son Thomas
Philp joined in 2014 and shortly (once they
turn 16 early next year), the two youngest
members of the Philp family twins Jack
and Keygan will also answer the call to
serve.
They are not the only family in the
district to be heavily involved in the
brigade over the years, as there were at
one time three sets of families serving.
‘‘When Ijoined, the only real fires we
attended were vegetation or house fires.
Today, we are first respondersattending
medical calls and car crashes more than
fighting scrub fires,’’ says John senior.
‘‘But when they told me that Iwould
soon meet everyone in the town when I
joined back then, they were right and that
still goes on today.’’
He loves the thrill of the call out, ‘‘You
never know what you will find when you
get there.’’
That adrenaline rush and the strong
camaraderie among the brigade members
keep him and John Bonasmembers. John
Bsaid he started because his father was in
it.
‘‘When the siren goes off, everyone
rushes to get to the station. But nobody
panics, they all know their jobs and all
want to serve their community.’’
He has witnessed many changes from
moving from the Fire Service to Fire and
Emergency NZ (FENZ). ‘‘We now have
good gear, good training and good support
services.’’
Thomas Philp joined 10 years ago and
said he had always wanted to be apart of
the brigade. ‘‘It was in my genes, Iguess.
When Ijoined, Istarted off answering
purple calls (medical events) so for me,
that’s part of the job.’’
While the rest of the family are out
shearing or still at school each day, if the
alarm goes off, John Senior says he'll
always turn out.‘‘If there’s an emergency
expect Dad’s Army to turn up. It is just the
way it is in many rural communities —we
all serve for as long as we can.’’
Consents for Whiterock landfill notified
By DAVID HILL,
Local Democracy Reporter
Resource consents to construct and
operate alandfill in North Canterbury
have been notified.
Christchurch firm Protranz
Earthmoving Ltd has lodged resource
consent applications with Environment
Canterburyand the Waimakariri District
Council to establish amanaged fill
landfill at its quarry at White Rock, near
North Loburn.
The quarry will be for the disposal of
building and demolition waste, and
contaminated soil material.
The two councils have jointly notified
the consents, with submissions closing on
October 9.
Two consent applications have been
lodged with Environment Canterbury for
land use, water permits and discharge
permits.
The application to the Waimakariri
District Council is for vegetation
clearance within waterway margins,
earthworks for the formation of a
managed fill landfill, abridge structure
within awaterway setback and increased
rates of mineral extraction.
The company has also applied to
operate amanaged fill landfill,
construction of stormwater outfalls,
earthworks and material storage
associated with quarrying and landfill
construction.
The application includes an
assessment of the environmental effects.
Around 100 White Rock and Loburn
residents attended apublic meeting in
February and have since formed an
incorporated society to organise their
opposition to the landfill proposal.
Those concerns led to the Rangiora
Ashley Community Board making the
decision in July to prepare asubmission
against the landfill.
Board chairperson Jim Gerard said at
the time community board members had
decided to stand alongside the local
community, who were concerned about
the risks to groundwater and the local
Karetu River.
Earlier this month, the Waimakariri
District Council approved $10,000
funding towards the community board’s
submission, allowing it to seek
professional advice, such as an
independent planner, legal advisor or
other technical expert.
Protranz general manager Shaun
Coakley said his company had requested
the consents be publicly notified.
5
‘‘We knew the development of critical
infrastructure such as amanaged fill
landfill would attract attention from the
local community, hence our decision to
voluntarily publicly notify.
‘‘Whether by providing additional
information that clarifies their issues, or
collaborating to establish consent
conditions that mitigate their concerns,
we're committed to an open dialogue.’’
Positive impact for
They say good things take time, and
that's certainlytrue for Members' Bills.
My Sale and Supply of Alcohol
(Winery Cellar Door Tasting)
Amendment Bill, drawn from the
‘biscuit tin' in September 2022, finally
became law on July 31 —ajourney
nearly two years in the making.
The process began long before the
draw, transforming agoal of updating
outdated laws into adraft bill.
Convincing caucus colleagues to
support its entry into the ballotwas just
the first hurdle.
Once drawn, the real challenge
began: lobbying across the House.
For some, it was anobrainer; for
others, it required careful explanation
of the issues at stake.
While the personal satisfaction of
seeing the bill pass 9626 was immense,
it pales in comparison to the positive
impact it will have on wineries
nationwide.
This legislationbrings cellar door
regulations into the 21st century,
allowing wineries to charge for tourism
experiences through tastings.
As the MP for Kaikoura,anelectorate
spanning from Marlborough to North
Canterbury, I'm committed to
supporting local wineries and
enhancing New Zealand's wine tourism.
This practical bill helps wineries
thrive while promoting responsible
drinking practices.
We worked in the room under dim red
Trams weren’t aproblem at Amberley,
The signal from it was transmitted
Whare to open term four
ByDAVIDHILL,
Local Democracy Reporter
Arts and culture are important to
Rangiora High School,asitlooks
to support agrowing community.
The school’s much anticipated
whare is due to open in term
four, while acommunity
performing arts centre is also
proposed.
The Government has told
schools to focus on literacyand
numeracy, but acting principal
Remihana Emery, himself a
maths teacher, said therewas
still merit in arts and culture.
The $1.2 million, multipurpose
Te Whare Mātauranga
(house of learning) is being fully
funded by the school’s boardof
trustees.
‘‘The whare is waiting on some
minor things to be completedand
we are hoping to open it in term
four,’’ Mr Emery said.
‘‘It is agreat investment for the
school and the community.’’
The 171 square metre whare
has an ‘‘imposing’’ frontage, and
will be used for cultural and
community events.
It will have amultiuse cultural
and teaching space equivalent to
1.5 classrooms, awet room /
dining space and ahuge 51
square metre northfacing
verandah.
The teaching space will be big
enough for 35 students.
As an auditorium, it will seat 65
people, while 30 could be seated
in the dining room.
The whare is located on Wales
Street at the northwest corner of
the school grounds, facing Mt
Grey.
Board of trustees presiding
member Simon Green said the
school worked closely with Te
NgāiTūāhuririRūnanga in
planning the whare.
‘‘We arereally pleased with
how it is coming along.
‘‘Our intention is for every
student to spend time in the
building during the year and to
understand the significance of
it.’’
He said the school’sMāori
department will move into the
new whare building, which will
mean moving it back on to the
main site rather than being
housed in an old prefab across
the road.
Asubcommittee has been
formedtodevelop aproposed
800seat performing arts centre /
auditorium which is likely to cost
$1012 million.
Ridinginsupport
of road safety
It was aday of learning for
many as riders saddled up and
took to the highways and
byways in North Canterbury
last weekend.
Riding in support of a
petition for horses and riders to
be designated vulnerable road
users, the groups of riders
promoted the message Pass
Wide and Slow,which
underpins the petition.
Gwen Gilmore, chair of the
Waimakariri Riding Club said
the club had afabulous Pass
Wide and Slow ride.
Atotal of 15 horses, two
people walking and numerous
drivers who drove — Wide and
Slow —joined in as they rode
district road.
She says there was alot of
learning for not just motorists,
but the riders as well.
Gwen now knows riders can
report aperson for dangerous
driving past ahorse.
‘‘And Iwill do so in the
future,’’ she says.
They had acouple of
‘‘interesting moments’’.
‘‘One driver saw fit to go past
at, he claimed 80km an hour,
and didn't like the rider
response to his dangerous
behaviour.
‘‘He stopped, backed up and
was extremely rude to the rider
concerned.
‘‘In the event we have taken
his rego, and reported him to
the police for dangerous
driving.’’
the slow down signal, was
eventually asked to stop by the
group.
‘‘She did, apologised, and we
spent alittle time educating
her on the correct way to drive
past ahorse.
‘‘Looks like we could do some
supermarket staff driver
education,’’ says Gwen.
‘‘We appreciated the value of
riding in small groups where
horses and riders could gain
confidence in how to ride with
traffic. We have improved our
knowledge of the hand signals
for riders to give to drivers, and
hopefully this will go the other
way.
‘‘That is more about drivers
reducing their speed to 30km
and passing wide.’’
Four generations of volunteering ... Sue Sinclair, holding aphoto featuring her mother
Agenerational affair
Volunteering at Greta Valley Community
Library has spanned four generations and
more than half acentury for one local
family.
Greta Valley’s Deschia Sutherland is a
familiar face at her local library, her
daughter Tuiana lends ahand too.
Deschia’s mum Sue Sinclair began her
volunteering tenure 50 years ago when the
library was based in Scargill.
She was following in the volunteering
footsteps of her mother Ngaire Henderson.
In 1984 the library shifted location to
Greta Valley School, and last week the
community celebrated 40 years.
‘‘It has been run all this time by
volunteers. It is awonderful asset to the
community,’’ said Deschia, who admitted
she was ‘‘a bit nervous’’about organising
last Thursday’s community celebration.
But it went off without ahitch.
Coinciding with Greta Valley School’s
book week meant local children enjoyed
the occasion dressed up as their favourite
book characters.
‘‘We finished the day with acake cutting
by my mum and daughter, who is the
fourthgeneration female from our family
to volunteer in the library.’’
Hurunui Mayor Marie Black read the
children aMargaret Mahy story, and spoke
about the community library opening 40
years ago which Margaret Mahy officiated
at.
She enjoyed catching up with returning
library volunteers, parents and the school
community.
‘‘It was aglorious spring day to celebrate
the milestone, and reading ‘A Lion in the
Meadow’ by Margaret Mahy was afantastic
way to honour her presence, when the
library opened its doors four decades ago.’’
Kaikoura community begins dark sky journey
By DAVID HILL,
Local Democracy Reporter
The work to protect Kaikōura’snight sky
has only just begun, says Kaikōura Dark
Sky Trust project coordinator Colette
Doughty.
The Kaikōura district was announced as
an international dark sky sanctuary by
DarkSky International last Thursday.
The community now faces the challenge
of maintaining its new status, Mrs Doughty
says.
‘‘There is an expectation that you show
continual improvement over thenext 10
years.
‘‘It means we need to look at the threats
and one of thoseisthe lighting in the town
and we also need to look at Christchurch
and Blenheim.
‘‘Even though they are along way away,
in the long term, if they continue to grow
and increase their light pollution it could
impact on us.’’
The town of Kaikōura and the peninsula
are not included in the dark sky sanctuary,
but will be subject to aseparate dark sky
community application.
The trust prepared aprivate plan
change to create new lighting rules in the
Kaikōura District Plan, after extensive
community engagement.
The Kaikōura District Council adopted
andnotified the private plan change
earlier this year.
As there were no objections, the new
lighting rules are expected to become fully
operative by the end of the year.
The new rules apply to new builds and
when lighting needs to be replaced.
But local residents will not have to
change their light bulbs immediately.
Waka Kotahi NZ TransportAgency is
also due to changeits lights on State
Highway 1throughthe town, which will
reduce their impact.
Tribute Art show support
Theart community’sresponse tothis
month’s Tribute Art Show has impressed
Down By The RiverKaiapoi Music’sowner
Nigel Cook.
‘‘People have got behind this project and
created art specifically for the show,’’
Nigel says.
‘‘The thing that impresses me the most is
the fact that local folk have gone ahead and
created something that has been on their
mind for awhile.’’
An example of this is the work created by
Peter Burroughs, aretired plumber and
art appreciator, who has been saving
copper piping for an art idea he has had
since visiting aEuropean art gallery
several years ago. Another is Jude
Anderson’s work.
‘‘She has taken my song `Kaiapoi Time'
and created an art piece to match, out of a
violin complete with the right musical
notes and aclock,’’ Nigel says.
Thethreeday event will be amix of art
andmusic in Ohoka’s Eyreton Hall, at 4
Mandeville Road, on Friday, September
27, Saturday, September 28 and Sunday,
September 29.
It will be a‘‘unique’’ weekend of art done
with a‘‘fake and forgeries’’ influence.
Artists’work will be matched and brought
to life with music performed by The
Meaniez in concert on Saturday night, and
on Sunday The Quiet Men, Pat on cello and
Mark on piano.
For more informationcontact Nigel on
027 4040 7712.
wants to get across to the community is
that ‘‘responsible lighting’’ can save
money.
Mrs Doughty says the new Kaikōura
Fire Station and St John ambulance
stations worked with the trust during their
builds and were good examples of
‘‘responsible lighting’’.
‘‘It is an emergency building so it needs
lighting. Even when the regulations are
enforced, it is not just about meeting the
requirements, it is about going beyond.’’
To address longer term impacts beyond
Kaikōura, the trust hopes its achievement
will help inspire the goal of New Zealand
becoming adark sky nation.
But it will require central Government
support, Mrs Doughty said.
‘‘The Government should be telling
councils, ‘this is what what your lighting
should be’, it seems anobrainer.
‘‘We couldn’t have done it without the
supportofthe council in obtaining
funding.
‘‘It is abig ask for communities to find
that sort of funding.’’
She would also like to see resources
developed to help other New Zealand
communities apply for dark sky status.
‘‘The DarkSky International criteria is
quite cumbersome.
‘‘Before you start, be certain about what
you are going for and consider whether
you can meet that criteria.’’
The trust will be joining with other dark
sky advocates in Tekapo from October 20
to 23 for the annual New Zealand Starlight
Conference to continue to raise awareness
of protecting the night sky.
Tourism Minister Matt Doocey is
scheduled to speak at the conference.
The Kaikōura district is the third dark
sky sanctuary in New Zealand, after
Rakiura Stewart Island and Aotea Great
Barrier Island.
It is also the eighth dark sky site in New
Zealand, including the Oxford dark sky
park which was announced in January.
Vehicle ban extension?
By DAVID HILL,
Local Democracy Reporter
Afourwheeldrive ban on aNorth
Canterbury river during bird nesting
season could be extended.
The WaimakaririDistrict Council will
consider aproposal from the
Department of Conservation (DOC) to
close the upper Ashley Rakahuri River
to vehicles while birds are nesting.
Mayor Dan Gordon said he has
requested staff to prepare areport for
next month’s council meeting, after DOC
staff addressed the council recently.
‘‘I have requested areport from staff
to outline what options are available.’’
The lower Ashley River from the
confluence of the Okuku River to the
mouth, which is managed by
Environment Canterbury, already has a
vehicle ban during nesting season.
DOC manages the upper section of the
river, from the confluence to the Ashley
Gorge.
ADOC spokesperson said the
legislation allowed it to close off the
upper section completely to all users.
But it would prefer the Waimakariri
District Council ‘‘to close the river as a
road from next year’’, during the nesting
season.
Avibrant collision of mathematics and art
By SHELLEY TOPP
15
Avibrant collision of mathematics and art
has been created by pupils from nine
Waimakariri schools for an exhibition in
Kaiapoi.
Te Kāhui ako Kātote Maths Art
Exhibition was launched in the children’s
section of the Kaiapoi Library on
September 12.
The work is aNew Zealand Maths Week
initiative by pupils at Te Kura oTuahiwi,
Kaiapoi High School, Kaiapoi Borough
School, Kaiapoi North School, Woodend
School, Pegasus Bay School, Clarkville
Primary School, Ōuruhia Model School
and St Patrick's Kaiapoi School.
It was organised by Michelle Rigby, one
of the community/kāhui of learning’s
acrossschool leaders.
Michelle is responsible for encouraging
pupil interest in mathematics (pāngarau).
‘‘I run apāngarau network in our kāhui
(group) alongside teachers in our kāhui
who are passionate about pāngarau,’’ she
says.
‘‘One of our initiatives for NZ Maths
Week was to look at doing maths art, so
looking at an artist who uses mathematical
content or just to do some artwork that
uses maths concepts.’’
The aim of the exhibition is to use the
pupil’s artwork to raise the profile of
mathematics and show that it can be a
creative subject.
‘‘We wanted to exhibit some of the
artwork as acollective,’’ Michelle says.
So with this in mind they contacted the
Waimakariri libraries learning
connections coordinator Jason Clements
for advice on how to do that.
He recommended holding an exhibition
in the children’s section of the Kaiapoi
Library.
The artwork will be on display for a
month, and during launch night the
children and parents attending were
really excited to see their art on display in
apublic place, Michelle says.
Artwork by Andy Warhol, Friedensreich
Hundertwasser —anAustrian who called
New Zealand his second homeland— Piet
Mondrian, and Paul Klee was shown to the
pupils to provide examples of math art
and these influences are clear to see in the
children’s work at the exhibition.
Waimakariri Public Arts Trust trustee
Jackie Watson attended the exhibition
launch and was impressed with the
children’s work. ‘‘I thought it was a
fabulous initiative that certainly
showcases the talent among the younger
generation and the wonderful work their
teachers are doing in the schools.’’
Hitting long, straight awinner
By SHELLEY TOPP
Hitting long and straight all day, and
putting well, has proved awinning
formula for Christchurch golfer
Kelvin Kelly.
He was the overall Best Nett
winner at the Kaiapoi Golf Club New
World Open last Sunday.
Kelvin has played in many Open
competitions and said the Kaiapoi
Golf Club’s Open was the best
organised, and best run event, he has
competed in.
‘‘The Kaiapoi Golf Club is the
Clearwater of the smaller clubs in
North Canterbury,’’ he said.
Kelvin also complimented the
club's green keeping staff for the
excellent condition of the fairways,
the greens and the course in general.
Club captain Sean Regan said 122
golferstook partinthe competition
and once again there was arush to
enter the popular 18hole event on
nomination day.
‘‘Applications closed after 40
minutes from when people were first
able to enter,’’ he said.
‘‘The success and growth of the
competition is one hundred percent
due to our chairman Jack Oldridge,’’
Sean said.
‘‘He had avision of restarting the
Kaiapoi Open in 2022.’’
Saturday’s event was ahighly
successful day for the club, topped
off by New World Kaiapoi owner
Gareth Caldwell confirming his
sponsorship for next year’s event.
Gareth and his wife Laura
Caldwell have been supporting the
event since its reintroduction three
years ago and say they ‘‘couldn’t be
prouder’’ to partner with the club as
the major sponsor for the event.
Kickstart 2024 –bigger and better than ever
Motorcycle enthusiasts will be heading
to Wigram this month for the Kickstart
2024 LAMS Bike and Licence Expo.
The event takes place on Sunday,
September 22, from 11am to 4pm at the
Air Force Museum in Wigram.
Kickstart is ajoint initiative between
Canterbury motorcycle retailers,
councils, MotoCAP and NZTA Waka
Kotahi.
Hurunui District Council’s Safer
Roads Facilitator Emma Feathery says
the event is one not to be missed by
twowheel enthusiasts.
‘‘The event promotes Ride Forever
motorcycle training, so it’s agreat way
for motorcyclists to improve their
handling skills to fasttrack their
licensing and stay safe on our roads’’
Waimakariri District Council Road
Safety coordinator Pete Daly has been
involved in the event since its
inception.
He has apassion for helping
motorcyclists get more from their
rides.
‘‘We have aligned the event with
Motorcycle Awareness month because
September is the start of the
motorcycle riding season.
‘‘A lot of motorcyclists don’t ride
much over winter but get out in spring,
so we can expect to see alot more bikes
on the road.”
With abackground as aPolice
motorcycle sergeant, motorcycle
instructor and ACC motorcycle
programme officer, Mr Daly is aware of
the benefits of Ride Forever courses.
‘‘People are up to 50 percentless
likely to be injured while ridinga
motorcycle if they do aRide Forever
course.
‘‘Never mindthe fact that they get
more enjoyment from riding by not
scaring themselves as much!’’
Courses on offer from Ride Forever
are being subsidised by ACC and will
be on offer at around $20 to $50 per
course –ahuge saving for attendees.
‘‘The event is aimed at motorcyclists
who have their Learner or Restricted
Licences and want to progress to afull
licence but it’s also agreat show for
anyone who is into motorcycles,’’ Mr
Daly says.
Awide range of the latest Learner
approved motorcycle scheme (LAMS)
bikes will be on display at Kickstart.
‘‘We have partnered with seven
retailers who will be bringing the very
latest in Learner bikes,’’ he says.
COLDSTREAM TENNIS CLUB
North Canterbury News, September 19, 2024
Moderntennis facility officially opened
Anewmodern, $2.8m, tennis facility, has
opened in Rangiora’s Coldstream Road.
It sports 10 floodlit courts, which were
completed in 2022, and which are now
complemented by aclubhouse, completed
in July this year.
The new fitforpurposeColdstream
Tennis Club complex, which now forms
part of the Waimakariri District Council’s
sports hub, is the result of manyyears of
discussion, fundraising,endeavours of
many, and important partnerships
between the Rangiora and Southbrook
Tennis Clubs, and the Waimakariri
District Council.
Coldstream Club president Laurence
Smith told abig gathering at last
Saturday’s opening there had been
previous proposals for anew tennis
facility in Rangiora some years ago, which
did not come to fruition.
‘‘But as they say, timing is everything.
‘‘Time moves on, opportunities arise,
new peopleget involved, bring new
energy, fresh ideas and ideals.
‘‘Today, we stand on the legacy of those
who went before us.
‘‘We must acknowledgetheir efforts, as
they have contributed enormously to this
tennis facility, which would not have been
possible without their contributions to
both the Southbrook and Rangiora Clubs.’’
The Southbrook Tennis Club opened its
doors in 1958 with afourcourt facility,
while 95 years ago, in 1929 the Rangiora
Tennis Club (formally the Rangiora Lawn
Tennis Club) opened atennis facility at
King Street, Rangiora.
He says he can only imagine what the
members of that time would think of the
new 10 court facility, Plexipave and Astro
grasssurfaces, automatic entry gate, the
brightest of court lighting, and apavilion
with what was then probably unthinkable
space andtechnology.
‘‘Both clubs owned their facilities. The
location, condition and financial ability of
the two clubs to make significant
improvements to their facilities were
some of the deciding factors in agreeing to
join forces and propose this new facility.’’
The two clubs sold their land, and in
partnership with the Waimakariri District
council, moved to Coldstream Road. This
partnership began in late 2016, gained
momentumover the next two to three
years, with the Heads of Agreement signed
on October 6, 2020.
The proceeds from the sale of the clubs’
facilities have been aprimary source of
funding for building the Coldstream
Tennis Club, along with a$1million
contribution from the council, and from
grants from funding organisations.
Prior to its establishment there was no
public tennis courts in Rangiora.
This venue will be available to the
general public and community for tennis
with an automated gate access control
system and an online booking system —an
integral part of the agreement with the
council
Both clubs had dwindling memberships,
poorly maintained asphalt courts, old
clubhouse buildings, no floodlights, no
consistent programmes for junior players,
alack of visibility to the public and alack
of funds to make any substantial
improvements to the facilities.
The new facility overcomes all the
deficiencies, and since the courts were
laid, membership has doubled, use of the
courts by casual players has increased and
regional events can now be held at the
venue.
Mr Laurence expressed gratitude for
the time and effort by thoseonthe
committee and members who invested
significant time and energy into the
development of the Coldstream Tennis
Club.
‘‘I would especially like to acknowledge
Elizabeth Brocherie, former patron of the
Rangiora Tennis Club, and patron of the
Coldstream Tennis Club. Elizabeth and
her late husband Kevin, contributed so
much to tennis over many years, and
Elizabeth continues to do so to the
Coldstream Tennis Club.
‘‘The Waimakariri District Council has
been instrumental in enabling the
creation of the Coldstream Tennis Club.
Thank you to Mayor Dan Gordan who has
been very supportive and also councillors
who agreed to the proposal to build anew
tennis facility, providing the land and
resourcing most of the construction of the
allimportant court base to an asphalt
stage, contributing $1m of what is getting
close to a$3m project.’’
COLDSTREAM TENNIS CLUB
The North Canterbury News, September 19, 2024
23
Huge support ... Abig crowd turned out at the opening of the Coldstream Tennis Club’s new complex in Rangiora.
PHOTO: JOHN COSGROVE
Coldstream tennis complex an investment in the future
From Page 24
Mr Laurence said the complex was not
only an investment in infrastructure, but
also an investment in the future of
tennis in Rangiora which has been, and
remains part of the social fabric of the
community.
‘‘On behalf of the club, we thank you
and give an undertaking we will ensure
the communities investment is
protected, and our facility is able to be
used and enjoyed by the tennis
community and wider community,’’ he
said.
He said it was great to be aligned and
adjacent to the MainPower Stadium in
an area which has become amajor
sports hub in Rangiora.
‘‘Thanks also to the North Canterbury
Sports Trust and staff at MainPower
Stadium for their support and
assistance over the past few years.
‘‘Looking forward it is important that
we leave alegacy for future generations.
‘‘There have been some important
decisions made, and some great work by
certain individuals over the duration of
the development of the club facility.
‘‘Without good financial management,
grants, donations and support from
various organisations we wouldn’t have
achieved what you see here today.
‘‘I don’t like to single out individuals,
but Iwill extend, on behalf of the club,
my gratitude to Jim Martin for providing
the club with his time, hard work,
experience, fortitude and wealth of
knowledge enabling us to get to where
we are today.
‘‘I would like to sincerely thank the
members and committees of both former
clubs for making the decision to invest
in the future of tennis in Rangiora and
their trust and support for those who
have driven the transition to the
Coldstream Tennis Club.’’
Mr Laurence said as part of the
business model, the annual costs of
running the club and future
maintenance costs such as court resurfacing
had to be considered.
‘‘We have arelatively small but
sufficient financial resource remaining,
for now.
‘‘However, without sufficient income
this could reduce over arelatively short
time.
‘‘We want to remain viable in the
future and provide the best possible
experience to all who use the facility.
Increasing membership, public court
hire, social tennis fees and cost recovery
from charges relating to external
tournament use, and public hire of the
pavilion shouldn’t come as asurprise to
anyone,’’ he said.
He thanked the outgoing coach and
manager Stuart Chalmers for the great
work he had done in recent times with
coaching, creating the club website,
managing online subscriptions and
enabling future electronic access to the
facility for the public.
After the formation of the Coldstream
Tennis Club, and during the facility
development, both Clarkville and
Swannanoa Tennis Club members have
joined Coldstream Tennis Club.
‘‘I would like to acknowledge the
Swannanoa Tennis Clubs very welcome
funding contribution which was much
appreciated. For tennis to thrive we
need the other North Canterbury clubs
to remain viable and at least maintain
and hopefully grow their memberships.
‘‘
Others to speak at the opening
included David Hawes, board chair
Tennis Canterbury, Phil Wright, board
member TennisNZ, Elizabeth
Brocherie, Life member, and
Waimakariri Mayor Dan Gordon.
The annual Springston Trophy pony
It is held at different venues only in
the South Island and is being hosted
this year by the North Canterbury
Pony Club. The club consists of the
Rangiora, Belfast, Eyreton, Kaiapoi,
Okuku, Oxford, and View Hill pony
clubs.
They are also receiving help from
the Amberley Pony Club to host the
event.
It has been abusy time for all those
involved in preparations for the event.
The construction of anew worldclass
crosscountry course, which is
taking many hours to complete, has
been designed specially for the event
by one of New Zealand's best course
grateful for that.’’
The dressage events will be held on
Friday, with the crosscountry
competition on Saturday and the
showjumping on Sunday.
The crosscountry competition,
which is considered to be the most
exciting and challenging event at
horse trials, is expected to attract the
biggest crowd and there will be plenty
of places for visitors to sit around the
course to catch all the action.
The event’s technical delegate, Alex
Coleman, of Rangiora, says Saturday
is ‘‘the day’’ to come if you cannot
attend on all three days.
‘‘As arider, crosscountry is what
they get excited about,’’ he says.
Pā harakeke
planting begins
By SHELLEY TOPP
Rangiora High School pupils have
celebrated Conservation Week by
completing initial planting for apā
harakeke (fortified flaxgrowing place) in
the school grounds.
Initiated by Claire Aldhamland, the
school’s leader of learning creative arts
faculty and also curriculum lead in visual
art, and supported by David Newsham
West, the kairuruku kaitiakitanga
/sustainability coordinator, led to the
initiative of establishing apāharakeke at
the high school.
David says it is agreat asset for the
school, which will increase biodiversity in
the school grounds and surrounding areas,
and act as awater management zone.
It will also provide agricultural, textile,
technology, and te reo cultural components
for pupils to learn at the school.
He hopes it will also eventually become a
learning place for people in the wider
Waimakariri community, and provide a
starting hub for the spread of native
planting at the school.
Claire says she was awarded aTeachNZ
study grant through the PostPrimary
Teachers' Association to work on her
Batchelor of Maunga Kura Toi Māori Art
Raranga (weaving) studies and part of that
mahi/work has been to instigate the pā
harakeke at Rangiora High School.
She is excited by the many possibilities
the project will provide for all of the
learning areas in the school and hopes it
will reinvigorate the school's farm.
‘‘For those who are not inspired by
farming or agriculture, the Pā Harakeke
can offer an alternative creative outlet,’’
she says. ‘‘The possibilities for technology,
art, and science are very exciting, let alone
the beautiful space we have created to just
stop and connect with the whenua (land).
Shearing history treasured in Hurunui
ByJOHN COSGROVE
A 10year search to preserve the
historyofshearing and life in the
Hurunui District is growing in leaps
and bounds for Waikari museum
owner John BPhilp.
He has filled one former wool shed,
and is taking over another next door,
as he expands the collectioninhis
niche museum in the small rural
township of Waikari in North
Canterbury.
‘‘I have started developing the other
shed for the bigger items such as wool
presses and horsedrawn carriages
and other oddities,’’ he says.
John, awellknown shearing
contractor in the district, says his
passion for collecting shearingrelated
historicalitems was spawned
adecade ago when amate dropped off
some old shearing handpieces.
‘‘It started then, and it hasn’t
stopped.’’
The small museum is packed full of
shearing memorabilia carefully
mounted and displayed alongside
information dating from 1847 when
the first stations started operatingin
the area at Motunau and then later at
Glenmark and Horsley Down.
‘‘Farming here revolves around
shearing, and as such so does life.’’
He says back in the day, Glenmark
station had 150,000 sheep andHorsley
Down had 122,000, and they all had to
be shorn by hand, using blade shears.
‘‘The stations then had50stand
shearing sheds, with 100 blade
shearers working all the daylight
hours, shearing at least 100 ewes a
day.’’
John discoveredthat the top gun
shearer of 1875 was William John
‘‘Jack’’ Pilcher, who worked at
Horsley Down, and was his brotherinlaw’s
greatgrandfather.
‘‘My wife Michelle’s grandfather was
ashearer, my uncles were andsoismy
son Thomas, so shearing is in our
blood.’’
John has carefully researched the
history of the many stations and found
memorabilia from all the decades.
He has created detailed information
and photo boards narrating life in the
decades.
Many contain interesting snippets
about the lives of the famous and
infamous shearers known to many, the
harshliving conditions and the
advances in the technology they
worked with.
has rebuilt shearing stands —from
components sourced from the original
shearing sheds, some of which are still
in use on the stations today —
complete with the graffiti,log books
and implements used back in the day.
He has also assembled the historyof
the Weka Pass, and those of the hotels
in the district and many other
elements of life.
He has documented the historyof
the Maori shearers, who dominated
the early shearing gangs. They used to
ride between stations on bicycles
laden with their gear and supplies —
one of which John has on display.
John’s Hurunui Shearing Museum is
open by invitation and free to enter.
He says he has already had many
busloads of visitors, service groups
and touring parties call in and enjoy
the displays.
New family partnership puts pork on menu
Farmer led charity Meat the Need has
expanded its offerings due to anew
partnership.
Patoa Farms in North Canterbury has
officially come on board, donating apig
aweek to help Meat the Need supply the
region'sfood banks and community
organisations with pork.
The partnership from the freefarmed
family business means Meat the Need
can also supply more food banks in the
region.
Patoa Farms wholesale and
procurement manager, Jelle Edzes says
they were honoured to be able to donate.
“Often it is more of ablessing to be
able to give, than to receive agift, and in
this case, we feel that way.
‘‘It causes us to reflect on everything
we have and be thankful,’’ Mr Edzes
said.
“One of Patoa’s core values is to be a
blessing to its people and local
community. Meat the Need fits the
criteria for caring for those in need in
our community, and we were keen to see
pork distributed alongside the other
proteins Meat the Need makes
available.”
Mr Edzes is proud of all those who
have made the distribution possible
from Patoa Farms, Harris Farms and
Meat the Need.
‘‘Nutrition is vitally important and
meat protein is essential to our
nutritional needs.
‘‘By providing easy to prepare pork to
food banks via Meat the Need, weknow
we can alleviate the pressures on those
in our local community who need help.
‘‘By providing aconsistent supply of
pork, we can help food banks do what
they do best, and through that we can all
work together to help our community
thrive’’
Meat the Need and Feed Out General
Manager Zellara Holden is excited and
grateful for the new partnership with
Patoa Farms, and the immediate effect
most, with the introduction of five new
food banks.
‘‘We’re incredibly thankful to Patoa
Farms for coming on board. It’s truly
exciting to be able to introduce anew
line of protein for those facing food
insecurity in the North Canterbury
region, especially when it’s grown
straight in their backyard and donated
from alocal farmer.
‘‘This partnership is atestament to the
generosity and dedication of our
farming community,’’ she says.
connecting local farmers with their
Nitrate testing by Greenpeace offered
By ROBYN BRISTOW
Free dropin drinking water testing
events for nitrate contamination run by
Greenpeace Aotearoa, are being offered
in Amberley and Oxford on October 18
and 20.
The tests follow asimilar exercise by
Greenpeace in the Waimakariri District
and wider Canterbury region earlier this
year.
However, the Waimakariri District
Council says if people have concerns
about the water in their private wells it
suggests they get it tested by aregistered
laboratory so they have all factual
information, as some of the last testing
done by Greenpeace ‘‘turned out to be
inaccurate’’.
Greenpeace spokesperson Will
Appelbe says, over the past three years
‘‘we have consistently found high levels of
nitrate in both private bores and public
water supplies, and it has emphasised the
need for both free water testing and an
end to drinking water pollution at the
source’’.
Mr Appelbe says access to safe, healthy
drinking water is afundamental human
right.
‘‘But in New Zealand’s rural
communities, particularly in Canterbury,
that right is being eroded.
‘‘Noone should have to worry about
whether the water coming out of their tap
is safe to drink, but that is the reality for
many people living in rural Canterbury
today,’’ he claims.
Greenpeace, in apress release, says a
‘‘growing body of research has shown that
even small amounts of nitrate
contamination in drinking water can
increase the likelihood of health risks
such as bowel cancer and preterm birth’’,
adding ‘‘public town supplies are
reaching levels as high as 5mg/L —the
level at which studies have shown that
risks of premature birth increase by
almost 50%.
‘‘We are deeply concerned about the
potential for people on private bores in
Canterbury to be drinking unsafe water.’’
Greenpeace says nearly 2000 water
samples have been tested by Greenpeace
since 2021, at more than 20 inperson
water testing events, and through the
organisation’s mailin testing programme.
care about giving back and nourishing
New Zealanders in need.’’
Farmer led charity Meat the Need and
Feed Out facilitate donations of meat
and milk to supply to over 110 food
banks and community organisations
across the country with support from
processors Silver Fern Farms, Miraka
and Fonterra.
Rangiora boxer off to Youth World champs
By JOHNCOSGROVE
Rangiora apprentice carpenter, and
aspiring boxer, Johnny Kennard thought
his championship plan for 2024 was
moving along nicely until he got thrown a
curveball.
The 18yearold has been unexpectedly
shouldertapped to be one of six young
Kiwi boxers representing New Zealand at
the Under 19 Youth World Boxing
Championship in Colorado, in the United
States, from late October to early
November.
‘‘We started the year off aiming for
Johnny to work towards being the best
fighter in his age group, but were
surprised when he got asked to go to
Colorado.’’ says his trainer Letitia
Madden at the Rangiora Boxing Club.
‘‘It’s ahuge thing to be selected for.
‘‘It came after Johnny had an upanddown
time at arecent Australian
tournament. Now he has to find the funds
to fly to and stay in Colorado, for three
weeks for the competition.’’
Letitia says his support team are
scrambling to find the funds to get him
there.
‘‘We are seeking sponsorship to help
him get there.
‘‘We've had short noticethat he is
eligible to fight there as it comes right
after his Australian trip, which was his
first trip overseas.’’
This all comes as Johnny prepares to
fight at the New Zealand Boxing
NationalsatCowles Stadium in two
weeks.
With arecord of 199 from 28 fights,
Johnny has done well since his debut fight
in 2019.
Seven of those wins this year were in
the youth division and his goal is to win as
many morefights as he can.
‘‘I’m feeling the best Ihave been, and
am in good shape for the coming
tournaments,’’ he says.
‘‘The youth worlds are unexpected, but
I'm looking forward to doing my best there
as Iwant to make up for the
disappointment in Australia, where
several decisions went against me.’’
Letitia says Johnny’s longterm plan as
an amateur fighter, is to aim for selection
at the next Commonwealthand Olympic
games.
‘‘He is at the right age and possesses the
drive, skills and ambition to reach these
international tournaments.
‘‘All here at the club are so proud of him
and the young boxers all look up to him.’’
The former Kaiapoi High School
student started boxing at the Waikuku
Boxing Club before transferring to the
Rangiora Boxing Club six years ago.
He says he's hoping to learn alot in
Colorado,and is aiming for amedal.
What’s happening in your
community...
Celebratingthe Launch of Healthyand
Energy EfficientHomes
Waimakariri District Mayor Dan Gordon
was impressed with Canterbury’s first high
performance energy efficient show home.
“Hurunui Mayor Marie Black and I, along with other
passive house owners and industry professionals
had the opportunity tohear from Rangiora-based
Brent Chatterton about the work heand his team
from Chatterton Homes are doing torevolutionise
the way we live.”
Chatterton Homes has been building homes in the
Canterbury Region since 1998.
In 2011 they became one ofthe early adopters of
passive house and energy efficient homes in the
country and one ofthe first builders toachieve
accreditation tobuild with structural insulated
panel (SIPs) inNew Zealand.
As of 2024 they have built more than 90 passive
house and SIPs projects, from architectural homes
to social housing and new schools across the
South Island.
As sustainability and wellbeing become key drivers
for change inNew Zealand, Chatterton Homes has
decided todiversify their bespoke passive house
design and build business to create arange of
affordable high performance house plans.
“The first ofthese homes iswhat wegot to see
yesterday, and itwas incredibly impressive.
Moisture and humidity are managed inthe home
which has acontinual supply of fresh filtered
air. There are no draughts, and the entire home
remains acomfortable temperature year-round.
This means homeowners save significant energy
costs for the heating and cooling oftheir home
through effective heat recovery.”
Brent Chatterton said the company’s aim is to make
healthier homes the rule rather than the exception.
“I would like tocongratulate Brent and Claire
Chatterton, and Aaron Stewart from Chatterton
Homes onthis fantastic and exciting work and a
beautiful, new show home,” Mayor Dan said.
Flaming trebuchets, archery
displays, knights in shining armour
fighting in heavy combat, plus
period costumes were all on show
at the Fiery Knights event held in
Mandeville last Saturday evening.
Seventy five members of the
Christchurch branch of the Society
for Creative Anachronism (SCA),
an international historical
research and recreation group,
gathered to hold amedievalstyle
tournament.
This involved fighting in armour
with swords and shields, enjoying
feasts, dancing and other historical
activities that recreate ‘‘the better
part of the Middle Ages’’.
Organiser Baron Raffe de
Massard (aka Shaun Gilmore) says
it is all about having fun.
‘‘SCA’s been going since 1966 and
has some 50,000 members
worldwide.
‘‘We meet regularly for oneday
tournaments and gatherings to
celebrate life in the Middle Ages.’’
He says the Christchurch
membership of over 150 includes
many IT people as it gives them a
nice outlet away from technology.
‘‘There are also thespians,
practical engineers and
managerial people. We all just
want to have fun as we enjoy
gatherings in our kingdoms.’’
Ben of Ildhafn (Auckland)
travelled south to look at ways to
expand the Auckland branch after
it declined.
‘‘It’s alot of fun and there are
still people interested in the era
who want to join, so I’m here to
have fun and undertake some
heavy combat.’’
Ben’s 30kg suit of armour is
handmadeofstainless steel.
It is designed to protect him from
blows from rattan and steel swords
while undertaking heavy combat.
‘‘Heavy combat is aserious
undertaking,’’ says Baron Grim
(aka Rob McIntyre, of Oxford).
He has been afan for over 35
years.‘‘The only thing you have to
watch out for is heat strokewhen
wearing the armour, but it is agood
chance to geek out and have alot of
fun.’’
