Dear ifm Razorbacks Fans,
we are happily reminiscing on the exciting
2024 season, which has given us many unforgettable
moments and thrilling games.
Our team showed up on the field with tireless
commitment and team spirit, showing
not only top sporting performances, but
also the cohesion and passion that characterizes
the ifm Razorbacks.
Today‘s playoff game is the conclusion to an
exciting season that we couldn‘t be prouder
of. The anticipation has been felt all over
Upper Swabia over the last two weeks and
today, together with you, our loyal fans,
we will rock the RazorDome (the TeleData
Stadium) and support our team with everything
we can.
We have been thinking about a possible
playoff scenario over the last few
days and weeks. Actually, our second
place in the GFL South would have
been secure after the Allgäu Comets
game on September 1st. However, the
withdrawal of the Berlin Adler
once again shook up the
table in the south and the last
match day was ultimately decisive.
It was clear to all of us: victory
against the Munich Cowboys is a must
and the playoff home game
is fixed. Apart from the hot
temperatures of around 30 degrees
in Munich and the game between
the two teams, our pulses
also rose to the highest level.
Ultimately, after the OVER-OVER-Time it
was finally done! The ifm Razorbacks Ravensburg
secured in the last game of the
regular season the home advantage in the
first round of GFL playoffs 2024. Club history
is written and we will continue.
A big thank you goes to our fantastic fans
who have supported our team so incredibly
throughout the entire season. Your enthusiasm
and loyalty are what motivates all of us
in the ifm Razorbacks family to keep fighting.
A big thank you also goes to our dedicated
helpers who work tirelessly in the background
to keep everything running. Without
your commitment, the Razorbacks‘ success
would not be possible.
Last but certainly not least, we would like
to thank our sponsors who support us. Your
trust in our team and your generous help are
invaluable and make a significant contribution
to helping us achieve our goals.
Let‘s start the playoffs together and lead
the ifm Razorbacks to new heights! Here‘s
to an exciting time and many more unforgettable
moments!
INTERVIEW
FÖRDERVEREIN ifm RAZORBACKS
Gaby: Football is much more than just a
thriving sport, especially with the ifm Razorbacks.
Can you tell us more about the
passion and development of the club?
Moritz: Absolutely. Football at the ifm Razorbacks
is deeply rooted in our region and
tradition. This passion has grown continuously
since the club was founded. Especially
since the founding of the Ravensburg Razorbacks
e.V. support association in 2016,
we have seen a steady strengthening of the
connection with the greater Upper Swabia
region and a deeper integration into the
football tradition.
Gaby: What is the central philosophy of the
association and how has it been reflected in
recent years?
Moritz: The philosophy of the support association
is to support and promote football
at all levels. This is particularly evident in
the impressive track record of the TeleData
Stadium at Lindenhof. The hard work and
dedication that we put into our projects is
reflected in the successes that we are able
to celebrate here. The atmosphere in the
stadium is unique and embodies the enthusiasm
and team spirit of the ifm Razorbacks.
Gaby: Who founded the support association
and what were the motives?
Moritz: The support association was founded
by former and active players. Their motivation
was to further advance football in
our region and to support the club in the
long term. These committed volunteers
have joined together to create a platform
that can promote and support the club in a
variety of ways.
Gaby: In addition to the GFL team,
the support association also focuses
on youth development.
How exactly is this implemented?
Moritz: Exactly, the promotion of youth
teams is particularly important to us.A future-proof
GFL team is only as good as its
youth work. That is why we invest in training
equipment and professional structures,
among other things. We want to ensure
that our young talents are optimally prepared
for their future challenges.
Gaby: A significant step this year was the
redesign of the VIP area. What was the reason
for this and how was it redesigned?
Moritz: The redesign of the VIP area was a
big step towards further professionalizing
the club. Thanks to the generous support of
numerous sponsors and the tireless efforts
of our members, we were able to modernize
this area comprehensively. The new VIP
area enables first-class care for our guests
during home games. It not only offers comfortable
seating, but also an exclusive atmosphere.
A big thank you goes to our
members and sponsors, whose support was
essential.
Gaby: How does each member
of the support association
contribute to supporting the association?
Moritz: JEvery member makes a direct contribution
to the promotion of football. With
an annual contribution of just 30 euros,
our members actively support our projects,
strengthen youth work and help us to further
expand the club‘s infrastructure. Your
commitment is invaluable for the continuation
and further development of the football
tradition in Upper Swabia.
Gaby: So the support association is more
than just a donor. How exactly does it support
the main department and what role
does it play in its further development?
Moritz: That‘s right, we are much more than
just a donor. We actively support the main
club at home games by organizing and catering
for the VIP area. As a support association,
we also take on representative tasks
and work closely with the main department
to bring the sport of American football closer
to the public in the Upper Swabia area.
Our role also includes acquiring new sponsors
and working together on the vision of
the main club. This close co-operation is
crucial for the future development and success
of the Razorbacks.
Gaby: What are the long-term goals of the
association for the coming years?
Moritz: Our vision for the next few years is
clear: We want to position ourselves even
more professionally, expand our membership
base and make further progress through
increased public awareness. We are supported
in this by former players and active
members. It is also our goal to further
increase the awareness and reputation of
the Razorbacks within and outside the region.
The support of the main department
also plays a central role. Together we are
working to further advance the football tradition
in Upper Swabia and to secure and
strengthen the future of football and the
club.
Gaby: How can interested parties support
the association and become part of this
success?
Moritz: We warmly invite anyone who is interested
to become part of this successful
collaboration and sporting success. Membership
applications can be downloaded
from the main club‘s homepage. Alternatively,
you can also find out more directly at
our VIP area at home games or contact us
by email at moritz.enderle@foerdervereinrazorbacks.de.
Visit us at home games, talk
to us and let‘s work together on the future
of football in our region. Your participation
can make a significant difference. We look
forward to getting to know you personally
and taking the next steps on our path to
success together. Your support is the key
to our continued growth and strengthening
our community.
Info about the opponent
SINCE 1987
The New Yorker Lions from Braunschweig have
been playing in the 1st Bundesliga of the GFL1
without interruption since the 1994 season. They
are the German record champions with twelve
German Bowl victories. In March 2011, the then
Braunschweig Lions announced that the fashion
company New Yorker had been acquired as a
new name sponsor. Hence the team name, which
remains the same to this day: New Yorker Lions.
The New Yorker Lions from Braunschweig can
look back on an exciting and challenging 2024
season. The season brought a number of hurdles
with it. Injuries to key players in offence and
defence led to a certain amount of uncertainty
in the line-up. In particular, the loss of quarterback
Lamar Jordan in the first half of the season
presented the team with major challenges.
BERND FISCHER
You can‘t get any closer to the game
than playing yourself. Referee training
also makes you a better coach, player
and stadium announcer, and you simply
benefit from it because you know the
rules inside out.
Gaby: Bernd, you’re a veteran of the
Razorbacks and used to play yourself.
What was your position?
Bernd: I started with the Razorbacks in
1992 as a tight end and never played
anything else until I retired in 2001.
You can also find out about the „Zebra‘s
wanted!“ project about being a referee
and how to become one.
Gaby: How did you get into American
Football?
Bernd: ILike so many players, I got into
football through Frank Kienzle. At the
time, we both lived in Altshausen and
Frank was friends with my brother. So I
just went along to training.
Gaby: What made you decide to train
as a referee?
Bernd: When I started working as a
stadium announcer in 2009, I realized
that I didn‘t know the rules as well as
I thought. And I missed being able to
experience this great sport again as a
team member on the pitch, and being
on the field as part of the referee team
was a good idea.
21
Gaby: How long have you had the job of
Stadium announcer?
Bernd: I started in the regional league
back then. It must have been around
2009, still on the artificial turf pitch. I
then did it on my own for quite a while.
From 2015-2022 together with Sven
Rautenberg and since 2023 with Markus
Haider.
Gaby: What’s your
pre-game preparation
like as a Stadium announcer?
Bernd: I am the stadium announcer and
not the moderator, which means I look
at the opponent‘s statistics - do they
run a lot or do they pass a lot? Who are
the key players and what are their names
from the other team? Sometimes
I also watch their games to be able to
better estimate what I need to concentrate
on during the game. It‘s actually
a similar preparation to being a coach.
Gaby: You are also the man who marks
out our playing field before the game
and paints the pitch. How much time
does that take?
Bernd: We are a whole team of around
6-8 people and we need around 2-2.5
hours. This includes everything like:
marking out, painting the field, the
numbers and the hash marks (dividing
up the playing field) - basically everything
you see on the playing field needs
to be painted. The grass needs around
3-4 hours of dry weather so that the
color has a chance to dry. Otherwise,
as happened at a game this year, you
might have to do everything twice.
Sven Rautenberg (left) and Bernd Fischer (right)
Gaby: What were your personal highlights
of this season?
Bernd: Definitely, that was Lucas Walk‘s
touchdown #99. It‘s not often that you
see a defensive lineman catch a pass in
the end zone.
Gaby: If you had one wish, what would
you wish for next season?
Bernd: To be honest, I have two wishes:
Firstly, I would like a painting robot,
which would save us a lot of time, and
secondly, the biggest wish, which doesn‘t
just apply to the next season: I
would like the Ravensburg campus. It
wouldn‘t just help football,
but all sports in the area.
If you look at other locations
that have academies or a
campus, you can see the
development in the sports.
Thank you very much, Bernd, for your
time and your words. It is a pleasure
for us to hear you every
match day and to pass
on your expertise to us
fans. It is very helpful
for every new and old
spectator to hear you
as a stadium announcer
and to understand
the complex game.
GREETINGS
FROM FAR AWAY
I was fortunate to be a part of the 2019
football season. Since day 1, we’ve been faced
with adversity by losing our HC. Then I
saw we had the opportunity to do something
special. I was able to become active
defensive coordinator while being a player.
The team buckled down and believed in us
to help win a championship which made my
transition even better. While playing without
a coach for a big chunk of our season,
we’ve managed to stay poised the remaining
of the season. Ravensburg have became
my home away from home. I fell in love
with the city and the fans. I’m blessed to
be able to win my first German Championship
and made many friends that i can call
family. That team was super special and I
wouldn’t trade that experience for nothing
in the world.
A heart for football
The Kienzle family: Pillars of
the Razorbacks success story
The most successful season in the 37-year history
of the Razorbacks is in the home stretch,
and one person - and his family - has contributed
more than anyone else: Frank Kienzle.
In various positions
in the department management,
Frank has since then steered the
fortunes of the Razorbacks and
continuously developed the entire program.
As he did as a coach, he knows how to form
teams, set clear goals and achieve success.
The Owner
On the field he was known as FK40, in
the team he was sometimes seen as the
president, and our international players
and coaches also liked to call him the
„Owner“: Our department head - Frank Kienzle.
He must have caught the football bug around
33 years ago, because he has been on the
field as a fullback for the Razorbacks since
1991. In 1997 he began his coaching career,
initially in the youth sector and later continued
as head coach of the men‘s team. After
a few years he took on the role of offensive
coordinator and made a significant contribution
to the team‘s promotion to the GFL2.
In 2005 he was elected department head - a
position he still holds today. „Since then, he
has been an integral part of this position,“
says Thomas Miller, former head coach.
His area of responsibility has expanded
enormously over the years. Whereas
just 20 years ago there were around
50 football players to look after, today
there are over 300 athletes for whom
Frank and his team are responsible.
In addition to his duties in sports,
he had to familiarize himself with
topics that he would probably never
have expected: from stadium security
concepts to Coronavirus aid to meetings
with local politicians. No problem
was too big and the Razorbacks
successfully mastered every challenge.
FK 40
Despite all the difficulties,
Frank always kept a cool head.
With the words „One Team“ and
„We can do it together“ he gave new courage
to the department management and the
coaching teams in critical moments. He is
the one who always gets to work, grills the
burgers for the team at barbecue events,
sits at the entrance on youth match days
and is one of the last to leave the stadium
after cleaning up.
The Kienzle family is not the only family
that shares their passion for the Razorbacks,
but they are without question a very
special one. It is an honor for us to say
THANK YOU at this point!
We look forward to many more successes
with you!
However, none of this would be possible
without the support of his family. Alexandra
Kienzle in particular has been a fixture
at the Razorbacks for years. In addition to
providing support at home, she takes care
of the finances and the numerous administrative
tasks. In addition, she is always a reliable
contact for our international players.
The Kienzle family‘s two daughters, Sophie
and Lea, have also been at home on
the football field since they were little and
can still be found at games in the stadium
today. Over the years, they have accumulated
a wealth of football knowledge - so
much so that they have even had to turn
down requests to be coaches. Not to forget
the family dog „Fee“, who has been part of
the Razorbacks family for over 11 years.
GREETINGS
FROM FAR AWAY
Coach - Grey Levy
I’m very excited about the successful
season you’ve had. The Razorback organization
and Ravensburg will always
hold a special place in my heart. The
city and team opened up a whole new
world for me. I met so many wonderful
people and have great memories of
my time there. I’m back home now, but
I will always be proud of my connection
to the Razorback organization. Best of
luck in the playoffs and I will be excited
to see the outcome from back in the
ifm Razorbacks extend
long-term contract with
Head Coach
John Gilligan
Shortly before the first playoff home
game in the history of the ifm Razorbacks,
the Upper Swabians are already
setting the course for the future. In the
week off after the last regular season
game, those in charge took the opportunity
to extend the contract with head
coach John Gilligan for another three
years.
after a difficult first few years in the
ERIMA GFL 1 and drove the positive development
of the entire team.
John Gilligan returned to the Razorbacks
at the beginning of the season
after having coached the team for three
seasons between 2016 and 2018. Under
his renewed leadership, he transformed
the Razorbacks into a playoff team
31
„John Gilligan signalled to us during the
season that he wanted to work with
us long-term,“ explained department
head Frank Kienzle. „We are of course
delighted about it, and given the great
course of the season, there was nothing
standing in the way of a contract extension.“
Sporting director Oliver Billstein
is also pleased about the long-term
commitment. „With John Gilligan, we
now have a solid pillar for the next few
years and together we will also look for
consistent solutions in other important
positions.“
Coach Gilligan has already held talks
with the players in recent weeks to put
the team together for the 2025 season
early. Until then, however, the full focus
will be on the upcoming playoff home
game against the New York Lions, which
will take place on September 22, 2024
in the TeleData Stadium at Lindenhof.
GAME RULES
What is American Football about?
The goal of American Football is to advance
the ball and gain yards. In the course of
a game, two teams of eleven players each
try to get the game ball into the opponent’s
end zone or to score a field goal to gain
points. The team in possession of the ball
(The Offence ) can gain yards or a touchdown
or a field goal by throwing the ball or
running the ball. The defending team (Defence)
tries to prevent the offence from advancing
the ball and the defence are trying
to regain possession of the ball itself. There
is always either only the offence or only
the defence of a team on the pitch at one
time. When the offence does not manage to
advance the ball ten yards further up the
field after four attempts (downs), the possession
of the ball changes. Each player has
a certain position in which they play. Due to
the many different and versatile positions,
American Football can be played at least at
amateur level by both big or heavy players
as well as small or light players. The plays
of the offence and the defence are determined
by the head coach and the offence and
defence co-ordinators.
How to score points?
In American football, it’s rare to see a draw
because the rules allow for different ways
to gainpoints.
Touchdown
The ball is carried into the opposing end
zone or the ball is caught in the end zone.
The team gets six points for scoring a
touchdown.
Extrapunkt
After a touchdown, the offensive team has
the opportunity to kick the ball from the 3
meter line through the goal frame. As with
soccer , the ball has to be kicked through
the two vertical goalposts, but unlike soccer,
the ball has to be kicked over the crossbar.
If this succeeds, you get 1 point. This is
also known as PAT (Point After Touchdown).
Two Point Conversion
Alternatively, after a touchdown instead of
kicking, the offence can also try to carry or
throw the ball from the 3 meter line into the
end zone. Since this is more difficult than
the kick, you get 2 points for this.
Field Goal
If a team hasn’t gain enough yards for a new
first down or touchdown or the time is running
out, there is the possibility to kick the
ball through the opponent‘s goal poles from
any point in the field. You get 3 points for a
successful field goal.
Safety
Safety is the opportunity for the Defence
to score points. For this, the defence must
bring the opposing quarterback to the
ground (sack) in the opponents end zone.
This situation is rather rare, but is worth 2
points.
