The Parish Magazine - October 2024 13 ‘Bed, bed, delicious bed, like heaven on earth to the sleepy head!’ This was one of the quotes that I remember on my calendar as a teenager. It was on my bedroom wall and every day you tore a page off. Every page had a Shakespearean or Biblical quote; there was one for each day, writes Claude Masters I can’t remember the others and don’t know why it just stuck in my memory. However, insomnia is a problem for many people and some lay awake for hours at night when you can’t go to sleep. It happens to us all! At one time, we were told to count sheep but I never found that worked. It puts me in mind of when I was a lad camping because always the first night in camp, kids couldn’t go to sleep until after midnight but the next night they would sleep straight away! When I was a Scout Patrol Leader, another Patrol Leader and I took a dozen younger boys to camp. The first night, as predicted, they were a real nuisance! The following night, we sent them off to bed and enjoyed eating up the really delicious soup we had made. When we eventually looked in the tent, there was absolute quiet! They were so tired because of the day's activities that they had gone to sleep straight away! The campsite was at Milestone Wood, just off the Henley Road on the edge of Caversham Park Village. At that time, it was the District Camping Field and scouts from all over the country used to come. It was very handy for us, particularly at weekends, as I had a paper round, so would wake up early to do the round and then cycle back in time for breakfast in camp!
