parish noticeboard — 5 ARISE AFRICA The Parish Magazine - October 2024 15 THE PERSECUTED CHURCH BY COLIN BAILEY Nigerian Church This weekend I was fortunate to go camping with my family by the lovely South West Coast Path in West Dorset close to the region’s highest point, Golden Cap. With some windy weather coming in, I was reminded of a word I had read on social media a few days before: A Christian organisation had encouraged their followers to be sure on a daily basis to be grateful to God in their prayers for the blessings of a comfortable bed and home. This I surely was. I was pulled up short a couple of days on while reading this month’s Open Doors magazine about the situation of Christians across sub-Saharan Africa. Here there are 16.2 million Christians who have been forcibly displaced by violence and conflict. For them, life means living in a camp for internally displaced persons (IDPs). WATERLESS Pastor Barnabas has been in such a camp for nearly five years. 'The IDP camp is a terrible place to live', he says. 'We don’t have good hygiene, we don’t have water, we don’t have toilets. Many people are dying. Only last week, as I am talking, we lost eight people in this IDP camp.' MILITANTS Pastor Barnabas’s own story is a harrowing one. He recounts how he was on his farm with his brother and sister-in-law. He heard shooting and people 'running in different directions'. The Destinedprinc, Dreamstime.com community was being attacked by Fulani militants, a group of Islamic extremists responsible for many of the violent attacks in north central and central Nigeria. Their motive is to destroy as many Christians and Christian communities as possible. His brother and sister-in-law were murdered in the attack. Pastor Barnabas was assaulted himself and is still affected by his injuries today and needs a further operation to regain proper use of his hand. Yet he is grateful to God that his life was saved. PARTNERS Pastor Barnabas is desperate to help believers in the camp and sees many struggling to remain faithful to God. Open Doors local partners seek to provide emergency food and aid to many IDP camps . They plan to provide skills training and trauma care. They are also paying for Pastor Barnabas’s hand operation. Pastor Barnabas states that the displacement of the Christians is something politicians do not talk about and the news does not care about it. Wikimedia Commons Open Doors has launched a petition — Arise Africa — which they hope to take to the U.K. government, the African Union, and the United Nations.
