The tone of this year’s presidential
Amidst its crisis of legitimacy, the
Haitian government has found it
The tragic death of
Javion Magee, a Black man
from Chicago, has sparked
outrage and concern within
the community and beyond.
Found on Sept. 11 at the
base of a tree in Henderson,
NC, with a rope around his
neck, the circumstances
surrounding his death have
raised serious questions
about transparency and
justice.
Details of the Incident
According to reports
from ABC 11, Magee was in Henderson to make a delivery to a local
Walmart when he was found dead. His family, who resides in Chicago,
is demanding answers from the Vance County Sheriff’s Office
regarding the nature of his death. Sheriff Curtis R. Brame stated that
the investigation is ongoing but emphasized that they do not believe
foul play was involved.
Brame further claimed that Magee had purchased the rope at the
Walmart prior to his death, but he did not provide additional details
when pressed by reporters. He strongly refuted claims circulating on
social media that Magee’s death was a lynching, stating that the rope
was not tied in a noose and that there was no evidence of swinging
from the tree.
speaking
truth to
power
By Bobby R. Henry, Sr.
Pastor Jimmy Witherspoon
and his wife, Candice,
attended a Broward School
Board meeting on Tuesday to
recount a disturbing incident.
A few weeks ago, just before
midnight, police arrived
at their home following a
report that Witherspoon had
threatened Anna Fusco, the
president of the Broward
Teachers Union (BTU).
Witherspoon strongly denies
the accusation, asserting
that he only spoke candidly
about the state of the union
and called for Fusco to resign
or be removed. He believes
this incident is part of a
larger effort to target him,
suggesting that some district
staff, including Dillard High
School principal Alfred
Broomfield, are involved.
As the story unfolds,
the situation becomes
increasingly absurd. Initially,
Broomfield claimed that
Hepburn instructed him
to remove Witherspoon
from school during an
investigation. Later, he
claimed he didn’t know who
gave the order. Now, the
narrative has shifted to a case
of mistaken identity, with
Broomfield asserting that
the call to Witherspoon was
intended for someone else.
School Board member
Alston mockingly responded
to these shifting explanations
with a knowing grin,
signaling his disbelief. The
ensuing discussion led to two
public records requests from
Alston and Brenda Fam. The
superintendent promised
to investigate the details
thoroughly. If conducted
The three-year project will be
led by Clement G. Yedjou, Ph.D.,
an associate professor of biology
and data science at FAMU,
and will focus on two primary
objectives:
Faculty Training: Faculty
members from all partner
institutions will undergo training
in AI and ML technologies to
incorporate these tools into
general biology courses. More
than 700 students are expected
to benefit from the innovative
curriculum to enhance learning
outcomes.
Student
Performance
and Engagement: Course
comparisons between AI/
ML-enhanced courses will be
assessed against traditional
biology courses to inform future
curriculum innovations and their
impact on student performance
and engagement.
“This initiative will provide
our students with cuttingedge
skills in AI and Machine
Learning, preparing them for
careers in data-intensive fields,”
said Yedjou while noting this is
the first NSF-funded project to
integrate these technologies into
general biology courses.
Yedjou will collaborate with
four co-principal investigators at
each partner institution: Jinwei
Noubissi-Kamdem, Ph.D. (JSU),
Jameka Grigsby, Ph.D. (ASU),
and Waneene Dorsey, Ph.D.
(GSU).
FAMU researchers hope to
produce a replicable model of
AI/ML-integrated pedagogy for
other institutions searching for
scalable ways to boost student
success in general biology
courses.
Dr. Hokehe Eko is a boardcertified
pediatrician and the
owner of “Glow Pediatrics,”
the first Black-owned virtual
autism clinic for children in
the U.S., AfroTech reports.
A mom of three with over a
decade of experience working
with children, Dr. Eko
trained extensively to conduct
autism diagnostic evaluations
using the CARS standardized
test. Now, she is able to help
children get diagnosed all
over the U.S.
“As a result of my
experience, I am better able
to differentiate between
neuro-typical and neuroatypical
behaviors, and can
also help identify if there are
other factors at play, such as
ADHD, depression, anxiety,
OCD, intellectual delays, or
other medical conditions,”
a statement on her website
reads.
Based in Oklahoma, Dr.
Eko’s virtual clinic boasts
a maximum wait time of a
week, starkly contrasting the
national average of 27 months
for an autism diagnosis
evaluation. Currently, she
offers her services to patients
in Georgia, Oklahoma,
Maryland, Minnesota, Texas,
New York, New Jersey,
Florida, and Pennsylvania.
“Early diagnosis and
intervention are key to
treatment and better
outcomes for children,
giving them the best chance
at developing to their full
potential, so it was important
for me to do my part to solve
this issue by offering quality
care to children regardless of
location,” Eko explained.
Why Does Prostate Cancer Affect Black Men Differently?
By Dr. Charles Modlin,MD
(Source: Blackdoctor.org)
Prostate cancer is the most
common cancer in American
men and African American
men have the highest rate of
prostate cancer in the world,
with incidence rates and
mortality rates twice that of
Caucasian men.
“Why do African American
men have a higher incidence
of prostate cancer?” Some
have proposed that it may
be a function of genetic or
hereditary factors. African
American men have been
shown to have significantly
higher levels of testosterone
compared to Caucasian men.
Because prostate cancer is
stimulated by testosterone
production, this higher level
of testosterone in African
American men may lead to a
higher incidence of prostate
cancer.
However, factors other
than hereditary factors may
also contribute to the higher
rates and more aggressive
forms of prostate cancer
observed in African American
males. There may be common
environmental exposures that
lead to higher rates of prostate
cancer.
More aggressive form of
the disease
Not only do African
American men tend to have
an increased incidence in
prostate cancer, but African
American men also tend to
have more aggressive disease
at the time of their diagnosis,
which may play some part
in the disparity in increased
mortality rates from prostate
cancer in African Americans.
However, it is unknown
for breast cancer surgeries,
which allow comfort and
convenience for the patient
and more precision in the
operating room.
Prior to joining Holy Cross
Health, Dr. Coste was a
breast surgical oncologist at
Minimally Invasive Center
for Women in Boca Raton,
Florida.
A Florida native, Dr.
Coste graduated magna cum
laude from the University of
Central Florida in Orlando
with a Bachelor of Science in
Molecular Microbiology. She
continued her education at
A.T. Still University School of
Osteopathic Medicine in Mesa,
Arizona where she graduated
as a member of the Sigma
Sigma Phi honor society.
She completed her general
surgery training at New York
Medical College Wyckoff
Heights Medical Center
in Brooklyn. During her
residency, she was awarded
a T-32 Research Grant
and completed a research
Fellowship in Surgical
whether the higher mortality
rates of prostate cancer
observed in Black males is due
to the more aggressive forms
of the cancer itself occurring
more often in African
American males, or the fact
that African American men
have historically been those
less likely to be screened for
the early detection of prostate
cancer and therefore have
more advanced prostate
cancer at diagnosis due to
delayed presentation.
Currently there is no
proven way in which to
prevent prostate cancer;
however, based upon certain
observations some suggest
that risk reduction for
developing prostate cancer
may be possible.
Diet & Nutrition
As discussed, the rate of
prostate cancer is highest in
the United States, and the
incidence of prostate cancer is
increasing in other countries
where Western diets and
lifestyles have been adopted,
suggesting that nutritional
factors may contribute to
prostate carcinogenesis.
Specifically, culture and racespecific
differences in dietary
intake and nutritional factors
may play an important role in
prostate cancer risk in certain
racial minorities. With the
observations that obesity
and high fat diets are more
prevalent among African
American populations, these
data support the linkage
between diet and cancer risk.
A nutritional factor
related to prostate cancer
risk is vitamin D deficiency.
Vitamin D deficiency is more
common in African Americans
compared to Caucasians and is
believed to be due to deficient
nutritional intake (i.e., due to
lactose intolerance in many
African Americans) as well
as to the fact that increased
skin pigmentation decreases
vitamin D production in the
skin in African Americans.
It has thus been suggested
that lower levels of vitamin
D could contribute to the
elevated rates of prostate
cancer in African Americans.
Low fat diets and vitamin D
supplementation may lead
to risk reduction of prostate
cancer in African American
males.
she said, but the questions
were “deeply personal.” Still,
she was able to obtain the
Social Media Influence
The case gained significant attention on
social media, particularly through TikTok,
where a woman claiming to be Magee’s
distrust in law enforcement. She alleged that
authorities had not allowed Magee’s mother
Legal Representation and Calls for Action
In response to the lack of transparency, the
Magee family has enlisted the help of national
civil rights attorneys, including Harry Daniels
and Lee Merritt. Merritt voiced concerns about
the police’s credibility, stating, “How can the
police expect us to take their word for it when
COURAGE?
By Dr. E. Faye Williams, Esq.
overwhelming. We give up because
we allow ourselves to think there’s
nothing we can do.
While we want to resolve the
Black women used to respond to that.
Lord knows I wish they were here
now, but we can read about the courage of Sojourner Truth,
Lou Hamer, Chisholm and so many more who handled the
“impossible things!” They put their own lives on the line, and as
Forever First Lady Michelle Obama said “DO SOMETHING!”
Our children shouldn’t have to get ready to go to a school
they dread because doing so they might get shot! That can’t
continue to happen. Where is our courage? Do we care enough
about our children to tell everyone who is against gun security
that “You will no longer put our children through this. This
We Lost the Count of Trump’s
Fabrications and Outright Lies
By Roger Caldwell
The first debate is over and Vice
President Harris is ready for another one.
“Under the bright lights, the American
people got to see the choice they will face
this fall at the ballot box: between moving
forward with Kamala Harris, or going
backward with Trump,” says Harris’s team.
President of the Hillsborough County
Democratic Hispanic Caucus, Victor Rudy
DiMaio: “Donald is just not working with
a full deck of cards and Kamala’s right on the money. She’s
sharp, she’s intelligent, she’s well spoken, and she’s doing a
phenomenal job. And that’s what we need in a President of the
United States.”
On Tuesday September 10 th , there were 70 million Americans
watching the debate, and Vice President Harris was strong and
confident, and former President Trump was weak, angry, and
no vision for the future of America. Vice President Harris as
the persecutor was able to get people excited because she spoke
of a plan for the future.
On the other hand, Trump came to the debate unprepared,
with no plan, and plenty of lies that made no sense. According
to CNN-Cable News Network, Trump delivered more than 30
false claims during the presidential debate. It is obvious that
Trump wants to scare Americans to doom and gloom in the
country.
Trump is claiming that migrants are arriving to US from
prisons and mental institutions, and there is no evidence of
the claim. Trump is also claiming that 21 million people are
crossing the border since President Biden has become president.
Trump’s Radicalized
Duped-Syndrome
By John Johnson II
Americans have a long history of
allowing individuals to dupe them.
Thus, a “Duper” is an individual capable
of using various verbal or nonverbal
tactics, even threats, to convince people
to do or even believe something they
did not intend to do or consider. Trump
used his status, lies, and political
power to dupe millions of followers.
Consequently, Trump created a
“Radicalized Duped Syndrome” (RD-S).
As President and now as a former
President, Trump has increased his ability to condition tens of
millions of his followers to become anti-democratic followers
fixated by his “Radicalized Duped-Syndrome.” During his
Presidency, Trump threatened Republican Congresspersons
and local legislators with being primaried if they failed to
adhere to his agenda. House Speaker Mike Johnson is a prime
example of someone impacted by Trump’s threats and (RD-S).
Again, now, as the former president, he’s used his ground swell
of MAGA supporters who’ve succumbed to his “Radicalized
Duped-Syndrome” to maintain an iron-clad grip on power.
One MAGA supporter, when asked about Trump’s behavior,
affectionately said, “If he knew better, he would’ve done
better.” Unbelievable, he thought he’d complimented Trump,
his “Duper.”
What are the primary reasons Republican Congresspersons,
voters, and Zealots Evangelicals are susceptible to Trump’s
(RD-S)?” Trump has mastered the art, as that of a chameleon,
‘Nasty,’ ‘Vicious,’ ‘Monster’: Social Media
Celeb Jameliah Gooden Claps Back at
Stereotypes Aimed at Black Women
Submitted by Malinda Kuhn
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Former President Donald Trump,
known for his sharp tongue, has been quick to throw insults at Vice
President Kamala Harris, referring to her as “nasty,” “vicious,”
“horrible” and a “monster” in light of her recent presidential
endorsement by President Joe Biden. But social media celebrity
and best-selling author Pastor Jameliah Gooden has clapped back,
explaining that as a Black woman, Harris is none of these things —
she’s simply misunderstood.
“What many see as aggression or meanness or nastiness is what
others might call assertion or drive,” Gooden said. She writes at
length about this subject in her popular self-help memoir, The Death
of the Angry Black Woman, which explores stereotypes placed upon
Black women, where those stereotypes come from and how society
can overcome them.
“As Black women, we have to fight twice as hard to get where
we are,” Gooden said. “We have to be assertive. And men do this all
the time. They’re assertive too. But unfortunately, there is a negative stereotype surrounding
the ‘angry Black woman.’ People are intimidated when we assert ourselves, and that can be
misconstrued.”
Gooden hopes that by better understanding these stereotypes and how they came to be,
society will learn to look past fallacious labels and misconceptions.
At the same time, Gooden hopes to be a voice for Black women who, in a society that continues
to marginalize them, often have a lot of reasons to be angry.
“Many Black women come from backgrounds of abuse, mistreatment or violence –– and they
become fighters. Through my book, I hope to be that voice in their head, the one we all hear but
rarely acknowledge, encouraging them to move on, let go of anger, reject hateful labels, embrace
their powerful femininity and live the life God intended them to live.”
Gooden’s messages reflect her passion for helping women toss anger to the curb and chuck
By Congressman Al
Lawson
As a Black man raised
in the segregated south, I
lived the painful reality of
Jim Crow. I know what it’s
like to be denied basic rights
because of my skin color. I’ll
never forget the hot summer
day when a man threatened
my life at gunpoint because
I drank from a “white”
water fountain. This was
the America I grew up in—
where prejudice and unequal
opportunity were the law of
the land. The Civil Rights
Act, championed by leaders
like Dr. Martin Luther King
Jr., changed all of that and
opened doors for millions of
Americans like me.
This transformative law
created opportunities I worked
hard to take advantage of. I
started a successful business
in Tallahassee, served my
community for 28 years in
the State Legislature, and
The Gantt Report
Birds of a Feather
By Lucius Gantt
represented North Florida in
Congress. The Civil Rights
Act gave me the chance to
thrive. That’s why I cannot
stay silent while prominent
far-right figures disparage the
Civil Rights Act and elected
leaders, including Senator
Rick Scott, refuse to call them
out.
Charlie Kirk, the founder
of Turning Point USA, is one
conservative voice that has
crossed a dangerous line. Kirk
has repeatedly called the Civil
Rights Act a “huge mistake”
and has led a campaign to
discredit Dr. King’s legacy.
Kirk has claimed there’s a
“war on white people,” and
welcomed white nationalist
into his organization’s
ranks. On his podcast, Kirk
even discussed repealing
the Civil Rights Act with a
known white supremacist
and Project 2025 contributor.
Kirk’s attacks on the Civil
Rights Act and Dr. King are
not just provocative—they’re
People ask me all the time who are
the people who love and support former
President Donald Trump. I tell them
Trump supporters are just like the
Babayka is; they lie, they cheat, they
scam, they harass, and they hate!
You see, birds of a feather flock together!
Hummingbirds find it dangerous to fly with eagles, parakeets
don’t fly with geese and doves hate to fly with crows.
America’s nationalists, supremacists and the MAGA faithful
love misinformation, conspiracy theories, racial division and
chaos!
The fact that Donald Trump speaks like, acts like, and behaves
like he’s a Russian asset will not stop some registered voters
from bowing down to the twice impeached, convicted felon who
hasn’t had a day in his life, it seems, without lies after lies.
Vice President Kamala Harris beat Trump in a recent debate
like Bud Crawford beat Errol Spence for the undisputed
welterweight boxing championship and she immediately
sought an additional debate.
That move by Harris was rare. Boxing matches usually have
Saving the World as a Path to Prosperity
By Ben Jealous
“Made in the USA” is a tagline that
should apply to every major piece of the
clean energy economy. It is within our
grasp. But we need to bust some myths.
This week, clean energy and
sustainability leaders from around the
country got to tour the site of a new
Qcells solar panel factory in Cartersville,
Georgia. Once the new facility is up and
running, Qcells will maintain the first
fully integrated solar supply chain in the
US – all right there in Georgia. Not far from Cartersville, the
Qcells plant in Dalton, Georgia has already shown how goodpaying
clean energy jobs can help communities and even give
the workers and their families a sense of pride and purpose.
The new plant will further demonstrate how onshoring clean
energy supply chains can create even more good jobs and help
Al Lawson is a former
U.S. Congressman who
represented Florida’s 5th
District and a long-time
advocate for economic
development and civil
rights.
a deliberate attempt to divide
Americans.
As a leader, I’m compelled
to speak out against Kirk’s
support from prominent
Republicans, especially
Florida’s own Senator Rick
Scott. Scott and Kirk do
not just run in the same
circles. Scott has appeared
on Kirk’s podcast more than
a dozen times—the same
podcast that has hosted white
supremacists. Scott has also
spoken at Turning Point’s
conferences year after year
and praised Kirk as a “true
patriot.” Let me be clear:
there is absolutely nothing
patriotic about pitting
Americans against each other
and undermining the values
that unite us. This isn’t the
leader Senator Scott vowed to
be when he ran for the Senate.
He promised to represent all
Floridians, including the more
than 3 million Black residents
of this state. Senator Scott has
broken that promise every
time he stands alongside
someone like Charlie Kirk.
Next week, Kirk will
campaign with Republican
politicians in Florida, and
Senator Scott faces a crucial
choice. He can continue
working closely with someone
who promotes hateful,
divisive rhetoric, or he can
take a stand on the right side
of history. It’s not too late
for Rick Scott to do the right
thing.
The Civil Rights Act
didn’t just benefit Black
Americans—it made our
nation stronger by breaking
down the barriers that divided
us. It allowed people like me to
pursue the American Dream,
and it brought us closer to
the ideal of equality for all.
The Civil Rights Act and
Dr. King’s legacy are pillars
of our nation’s greatness.
They should be celebrated,
not attacked. Senator Scott
must reject Charlie Kirk and
the destructive agenda he
represents.

CYNA Group: 7061 W Commercial Blvd, Ste 5
Tamarac Fl. 33319
(NEXSTAR) – The next cost-of-living increase for Social
Security recipients — which was already projected to be the
lowest in years — is continuing to fall even lower, according to
the latest figures from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Based on the department’s consumer price index (CPI) data
through August, Social Security recipients might expect a 2.5%
cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) to their payments next year,
according to The Senior Citizen’s League (TSCL), a nonpartisan
senior advocacy group.
That’s lower than the 2.63% estimated in July and the 2.57%
estimated in August. It would also be the lowest increase since
2021, when beneficiaries were given a 1.3% bump.
“A COLA of 2.5% would raise the average monthly benefit
for retired workers of $1,920 by $48,” the group wrote in a
Wednesday press release.
Why some Social Security recipients won’t get checks in
September
The Social Security Administration’s yearly cost-of-living
adjustments are designed to help Social Security and
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients retain their
buying power amid rising inflation. These increases, which are
issued annually, are determined using the Bureau of Labor’s
consumer price index, which itself is a measure of the change
in prices for common consumer goods and services.
Because of record inflation in previous years, the COLA had
reached as high as 8.7% in 2023, but fell to 3.2% in 2024. Cooling
inflation numbers continue to bring the COLA estimate down.
At 2.5%, however, the projected increase isn’t so “far from
the historical norm,” The Senior Citizen’s League noted. (The
COLA had actually dipped to 0.0 multiple times over the last 15
years.) But the group still feels that the prices seniors pay for
medication, housing and groceries is not accurately reflected by
the Labor Department’s figures.
“This year’s COLA will be important because many seniors
said it didn’t keep up with their real-life expenses last year,”
TSCL wrote in a June report. “Among the roughly 1,550
participants in TSCL’s 2024 Senior Survey, 69 percent said
their household costs rose faster than the COLA last year, with
costs for food and housing leading the way.”
The United States has been named the most powerful
travel and tourism market with China coming in second.
CHRISTOPHER REYNOLDS/LOS ANGELES TIMES/TNS
Submitted by Donald Wood
(Source: Daytona Times)
The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) announced
that the United States is the world’s most powerful
Travel & Tourism market, contributing a record-breaking
$2.36 trillion to the nation’s economy last year.
According to the WTTC’s 2024 Economic Impact Trends
Report, the U.S. broke the record despite the “slow return of
spending from international travelers,” with America nearly
doubling the economic contribution of its nearest rival.
In total, travel and tourism investment grew 13% in
2023 to reach more than $1 trillion, with a return to pre-pandemic
levels anticipated by 2025.
“As we look forward to a record-breaking 2024, it’s clear
that Travel & Tourism is not only back on track, but also set
to achieve unprecedented growth,” WTTC President and CEO
Julia Simpson said.
“We will continue to prioritize sustainability and inclusivity,
ensuring that this growth benefits everyone and protects
our planet for future generations,” Simpson continued.
“The sector’s resilience and potential for innovation continues
to drive us forward.”
The WTTC ranked China as the world’s second most
powerful market with a GDP contribution of $1.3 trillion in
2023, but officials are predicting that the Asian powerhouse
will become the biggest travel and tourism market over the
next decade.
As for the rest of the top five nations in terms of travel
contributions to GDP, Germany secured the third spot, while
Japan ranked fourth overall and the United Kingdom rounded
out the top five.
According to the report, many key destinations will
profit from a surge in international spending this year compared
to pre-pandemic levels, with Saudi Arabia up 91.3%, Turkey
up 38.2%, Kenya up 33.3%, Colombia up 29.1%, and Egypt
up 22.9%.
soul as one would say, and for
us, no one did it better. He
lived for his music, family and
friends.”
"Love one another as he would want that for us all."
Howard Stanley Beverly aka Frankie Beverly 12/6/46 – 9/10/24 The Beverly Family
Mr. Beverly, who also produced and played guitar, was the founder and driving force behind
Maze, a seven- and then eight-piece group that quickly became one of Black America’s favorite
groups.
Beginning in the late 1970s, they developed a reputation as an energetic live act, and rose
to the top of the R&B chart with songs that were later sampled by hip-hop artists including 50
Cent, Wale, and the New York duo Rob Base & DJ E-Z Rock.
“Southern Girl,” “Feel That You’re Feelin’ ” and “Joy and Pain” became staples of R&B radio
stations and decades of house parties. The band’s most enduring hit, the jubilant 1981 single
“Before I Let Go,” peaked at No. 13 on the R&B chart and was later covered by Beyoncé.
Maze’s touring success boggles the mind. The band hasn’t had a studio album to promote since
1993, but they sing and play to sold-out shows in city after city, year after year.
“There isn’t a cookout, not a wedding or family reunion in Black America where you won’t
hear” the song, Essence magazine declared in 2017.
In March, Beverly was even awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award from the NAACP
Image Awards.
How Did Frankie Beverly Get His Name?
After relocating from Philadelphia to San Francisco in the early 1970s, Beverly’s big break
came when he met Marvin Gaye, who invited Beverly and his band to open for him on tour. It
was Gaye who also suggested the band adopt the name Maze.
“For the next [few] months, we kicked names in the butt,” Music lover and friend Michael
Burton said. “We go back to Marvin and say, ‘How about Maze Featuring Frankie Beverly’? We
did a name check and found out there was a band already called Maze. Marvin said, ‘Don’t worry
about it; we’ll take care of that.’ From my understanding, we bought the name. It’s been Maze
Featuring Frankie Beverly ever since.”
In the years that followed, Beverly and Maze found considerable success, releasing nine gold
albums and delivering chart-topping hits such as “Back in Stride,” “Can’t Get Over You,” and
“Before I Let Go.”
“‘Before I Let Go’ really did turn out to be something more than I even imagined,” Beverly
told Essence in 2020. “I got blessed with that.”
The upbeat song, he said at the time, is actually about a love lost.
“I was seeing some lady but I was just with someone (else) and we broke up, he told the outlet.
“And it got kind of hard because I wasn’t with the woman I wanted to be with and I couldn’t stay
with the one I was with.”
In 2019, Beyoncé covered the track for her “Homecoming” film and corresponding live album
following her Coachella performance.
Beverly told Billboard that year that the platinum-selling cover was “one of the high points of
my life.”
The band remained active in recent years, performing live in their signature all-white at
festivals, and touring as recently as earlier this year on the six-city I Wanna Thank You Tour,
which also marked his retirement.
On this year’s farewell tour, Beverly announced that Maze would continue performing with
lead vocalist Tony Lindsay in his place. “The band will carry on as Maze Honoring Frankie
Beverly,” he said. “It’s been a great ride through the decades. Let the music of my legacy live on.”
Frankie Beverly’s Favorite Song
So many Frankie Beverly songs could be heard in heavy rotation back in the day — and even
still today.
What makes Frankie Beverly’s serene-sounding music so special for generations of Black
America, in particular, is the heavenly combination of the chill frequencies in his music, deep
instrumentation from Maze and his rich, comforting voice. Plus, it’s the honest and wholesome
messages in his lyrics about life as heard on songs like “Joy and Pain” that people look forward to.
It’s the perfect soundtrack to a warm, sunny spring day, which ironically greeted concertgoers,
family reunion attendees, or people who are just cleaning the house listening to his music.
When it comes to his favorite song(s), Beverly doesn’t hesitate.
“‘Happy Feelings’ and ‘We Are One’ really define who MAZE is,” Beverly says in a 2012
interview. ‘We Are One’ describes how we really feel in our heart as a group and as a family.”
While you may have your own set of favorites from the music legend, one thing is for sure: his
legacy of hits that bring people together will live on.
Iconic Jackson 5 Member
Tito Jackson Dies at 70
By Stacy M. Brown,NNPA Newswire
Senior National Correspondent@
StacyBrownMedia
Tito Jackson, a founding member of the
legendary Jackson 5, has died at the age of
70. The Jackson 5, which included Tito and
his brothers Jackie, Jermaine, Marlon, and
Michael, skyrocketed to fame in the 1970s with
timeless hits like “ABC” and “I’ll Be There,”
reshaping the music scene and turning the
group into teen heartthrobs.
Sons Taj, Taryll, and TJ confirmed Jackson’s
death, sharing the news in an Instagram post
on their music group 3 T’s account. “Some of
you may know him as Tito Jackson from the
legendary Jackson 5, some may know him as
‘Coach Tito’ or some know him as ‘Poppa T,’”
the statement read. “Nevertheless, he will be
missed tremendously.” Former Jackson family
manager Steve Manning revealed that Tito
died of an apparent heart attack while driving
from New Mexico to Oklahoma on Sunday.
Born Toriano Adaryll Jackson on October
15, 1953, in Gary, Indiana, Tito was the third
of ten children born to Katherine and Joe
Jackson. His early talents as a singer and
guitarist caught the eye of his father, Joe,
who formed the Jackson Brothers in 1964,
initially featuring Tito, Jackie, and Jermaine.
As the group evolved into the Jackson 5,
they became one of the first Black American
groups to achieve crossover success, breaking
racial barriers with their infectious music and
dynamic performances.
The Jackson 5’s rise to fame was meteoric.
With Motown Records backing them, they
delivered chart topping hits that remain
classics today. Their infectious energy and
catchy songs turned them into pop culture
icons almost overnight. After leaving Motown
in 1975 and signing with Epic Records, they
were forced to change their name to The
Jacksons. Despite the shift, they continued to
dominate the music scene, with Tito playing a
crucial role in the band’s success.
While the Jackson 5 set the stage for
Michael Jackson’s solo superstardom, with
Michael permanently leaving the group in
1984 following the massive success of his
“Thriller” album, Tito also carved out his own
place in music history. The Jackson 5 were
inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in
1997, a testament to their enduring impact on
the music industry.
Though never officially disbanding, the
Jacksons saw their members explore solo
endeavors. Tito ventured into a solo career
later in life, releasing his debut album “Tito
Time” in 2016, followed by “Under Your Spell”
in 2021. His work as a solo artist showcased
his versatility and deep-rooted love for music,
allowing him to step out of the shadow of his
famous family name. Tito also fronted a blues
band that performed mainly in Southern
California but had made a name for itself
nationally.
Tito Jackson’s
legacy is
more than just
Project 2025 Weaponization continued from Front Page
Agenda 47’s plans — to restrict prosecutorial discretion
when it comes to enforcing immigration laws, give state leaders
power over their education system by eliminating the U.S.
Department of Education, and weaponize the U.S. Department
of Justice’s criminal and civil rights divisions — are eerily
similar to the plans outlined in Project 2025.
The 922-page Project 2025 dedicates 36 pages to the DOJ,
and its “assault on civil rights.” The proposed transition plan —
officially titled “Mandate for Leadership 2025: The Conservative
Promise” — is spearheaded by The Heritage Foundation — a
right-wing think tank — for the next Republican president.
Their outlook for the DOJ mirrors what Americans witnessed
with Jeff Sessions and William Barr in charge.
“Sunlight is the best disinfectant. We will continue to shine
a light on Project 2025, [which is] institutionalized Trumpism
that we have every reason to believe would be made real if
Donald Trump is elected to another term in the White House,”
Pressley told CapitalB.
This week, the Massachusetts Democrat and others from
Congress signed a letter to the president of the Heritage
Foundation requesting he release the fourth pillar of Project
2025. It’s described “as a roadmap of comprehensive, concrete,
early actions for each federal
agency” within the president’s
first 180 days.
Pressley helps break down
some key areas of this policy
agenda that voters should pay
closer attention to.
Why are the Project 2025
plans so alarming?
“I was immediately
alarmed because I saw what
was laid out in this manifesto
as plans. Not ideas, but plans. A policy plan, and a transition
plan for institutionalized Trumpism, and, in my opinion, a
weaponized White House, DOJ, and Supreme Court,” Pressley
said.
The Justice Department under Trump had two attorneys
general, Sessions and Barr, who split the four-year term.
During their short tenures, they collectively:
• Shutdown the DOJ’s civil rights divisionability to
launch pattern and practice investigations against
police departments with allegations of misconduct.
• Allowed the federal executions of more people in a sixmonth
period than any other administration.
• Used a loophole to send the U.S. National Guard into
cities whose elected prosecutor didn’t prosecute lowlevel
crimes — an offense the Trumpadministration
saw as defiant.
Under current U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland,
there has been a moratorium on executing anyone on
federal death row; a review was launched into the use
of the lethal injection; and the civil rights division has
been revitalized with Kristen Clarke as its new leader.
Project 2025’s ideas for the DOJ are in one chapter that, in
the legendary marketing
of community initiatives,”
said Dr. Russ Wigginton,
Museum President. “This
announcement is timely as we
observe Black Philanthropy
Jordan Brand proves that
representation matters as
we explore how benevolent
Pompano Beach. The community will feature
$3.45 Million Dining Hall Facility Renovation
JACKSONVILLE,
unveil its newly renovated
dining hall on September 25,
2024, a project that not only
The dining hall, which has not
will be named in Bishop
Ketamine Therapy May Help
Break Cannabis Dependency
The death of actor
Matthew Perry from ketamine
spotlighted the drug’s risks.
He had been receiving
ketamine infusion therapy
at a clinic, but according
to the New York Times,
investigators found he had
been illegally administered
ketamine at his home. Five
people, including two doctors,
were charged.
The U.S. Food and Drug
Administration approved
ketamine as a surgical
anesthesia in 1970. The
drug can also be legally
administered by medical
professionals certified in
ketamine-infusion therapy,
like Dr. Erin Boyd.
Dr. Boyd, founder of
Lumina Mind based in North
Florida, uses ketamine to
treat treatment-resistant
mood disorders and substance
abuse, including cannabis use
disorder (CUD).
campus grill, and a dedicated
faculty and presidential
dining room. The project
also addressed accessibility
concerns by adding elevator
access and handicap
restrooms.
“The completion of
this much anticipated
campus capital project is a
transformative moment for
our university and a fitting
tribute to the late Bishop
Young’s legacy,” said Dr. A.
Zachary Faison Jr., president
and CEO of Edward Waters
University. “We are excited
to provide our campus
community with a dining
experience that is befitting of
our emerging eminence and
that reflects our commitment
to incubating a best-inclass
living and learning
Increased use of marijuana
has raised concerns about
CUD, which the Centers for
Disease Control warns can
lead to health and social
problems, including memory
loss, lethargy, withdrawal
symptoms, and neglected
obligations.
Dr. Boyd says ketamine
treatments could help break
such dependency and other
substance use disorders. Her
clinic administers ketamine
intravenously (IV) to treat
treatment-resistant posttraumatic
stress disorder
(PTSD), bipolar disorder,
anxiety, and depression in
patients unresponsive to
other treatments.
She explained that the
infusion takes 40 minutes,
and the patient feels calm and
has a bit of a euphoric feeling.
After an infusion, a patient
rests for 20 minutes, followed
by an hour consultation with
a board-certified psychiatric
nurse practitioner.
Dr. Boyd says her typical
treatment regime consists of
at least six infusions over a
few weeks.
transparently, Witherspoon believes the investigation will reveal a deeper, more scandalous
connection between district staff, the school principal, and Fusco—comparing it to the
drama surrounding Will Smith, Jada Pinkett Smith, and August Alsina.
Meanwhile, board member Debra Hixon defended Fusco, attempting to downplay her
role by claiming that Fusco is neither an employee nor a vendor of the school board. However,
Alston quickly countered with evidence proving that Fusco and the BTU are classified
as vendors. Even General Counsel Marilyn Batista seemed to suggest that Fusco might
be exempt from bullying and harassment investigations. But Alston skillfully pointed to
documents that show the BTU, as a vendor, falls under the district’s anti-bullying policy,
which includes both employees and vendors.
As for Fusco, she remained unusually quiet in response to Witherspoon’s account and
the board’s calls for a full investigation. When giving her BTU report, she did not address
Witherspoon directly but shifted her focus to advocating for pay raises for Education
Support Professionals (ESPs). Her sudden change in tone over the past two weeks suggests
the steady release of facts may be influencing her stance.
Alston has long raised concerns about principals, especially Black female principals,
feeling intimidated by Fusco. However, Witherspoon’s bravery in standing up to what he
calls Fusco’s “reign of terror” might inspire others to speak out. Alston’s message was clear:
there is strength in numbers, and the time to act is now.
Board member Daniel Foganholi was notably quiet during the meeting, blending into
the background. Yet, his quiet demeanor suggested confidence, as though he was holding
all the cards, waiting for the next chapter in this unfolding story.
And finally, a warm welcome back to Nora Rupert.

Music mogul Sean
“Diddy” Combs has been
indicted on charges of sex
trafficking, racketeering and
transportation to engage in
prostitution.
The charges come one day
after the Southern District
of New York announced
that Combs was arrested by
federal agents. Sources told
PEOPLE that the rapper
and producer was taken
into custody at a hotel in
Manhattan by Homeland
Security Investigations
agents.
Speaking outside the
federal courthouse in New
York, Combs’ attorney Marc
In the indictment, which
was unsealed Tuesday
and obtained by PEOPLE,
prosecutors accuse Combs
of manipulating women
into participating in “highly
orchestrated performances,”
which he called “freak-offs.”
The “freak-offs” allegedly
involved male sex workers;
prosecutors allege in the
indictment that Combs would
arrange to have women and
sex workers fly to his location.
Prosecutors allege
that Combs “ensured
participation” by giving them
narcotics, holding sway over
their careers, threatening to
cut them off from financial
support and using violence
and intimidation.
Dating back to 2009,
prosecutors allege that
Combs assaulted multiple
women. One incident in
2016 at a Los Angeles hotel,
in which Combs allegedly
“kicked, dragged and threw
a vase” a woman, was caught
on camera, according to the
indictment. Prosecutors claim
the rapper tried to bribe a
staff member in exchange for
silence.
Florida A&M is on the way to naming Angela Suggs
Suggs, a 1992 FAMU graduate previously served in a
variety of capacities for the Rattlers including marketing,
promotions and communications positions. She also
was the Rattlers' Senior Associate Athletics Director for
External Affairs and Senior Woman Administrator (SWA).
She has been the Florida Sports Foundation's President and
Chief Executive Officer since 2017.
She will replace Tiffani-Dawn Sykes, who spent a
tumultuous 19 months leading the program. Sykes departed
last month amidst an administration shake-up that began
with the resignation of former President Larry Robinson
following a debacle related to a much ballyhooed donation
to the school that turned out to be fraudulent. Sykes
departed after FAMU interim president Dr. Timothy
Beard called on the university’s top leadership team to
resign.
BCSP Editor
Just three weeks into the 2024 football
season and there are only two undefeated black
college teams - 3-0 Johnson C. Smith and 2-0
Texas College.
Well, at least JCSU and TC are the only
undefeated and untied teams after 2-0-1 Clark
Atlanta had its game Saturday vs. Florida
Memorial halted at halftime because of
inclement weather with the teams tied at 28.
Headed into Week Four this week, the top
match up has Maurice Flowers' undefeated
JCSU Golden Bulls hosting defending CIAA
champion Dr. Alvin Parker's Virginia Union
Panthers (2-1) at 6 p.m. in Charlotte.
When Flowers took over at J. C. Smith,
his alma mater, in 2022, he vowed to make
the Golden Bulls relevant again. He hoped to
rekindle the winning ways of legendary JCSU
head coach Eddie McGirt who produced 16
winning seasons and led the Golden Bulls to a
118-73 record during a 20-year stint from 1958-
1977. JCSU has had only seven winning seasons
since and none since 2012.
After finishing 2-7 in his first season,
Flowers led the squad to a 7-4 mark last season
including a trip to a postseason bowl game.
He enters Saturday's game with the CIAA's
passing leader, junior QB Darius Ocean (67 of
106, 982 yds., 7 TDs, 0 ints.), the league's top
receiver, junior wideout Brevin Caldwell (38
receptions, 584 yds.) who has caught all seven
of Ocean's TD tosses and team rushing leader
junior RB Quavaris Crouch (38 carries, 274
yds., 7 TDs), all 6-2, 225 pounds of him.
JCSU (40.5 ppg.), with wins over Tuskegee
(21-13), Morehouse (37-13) and Lincoln (Pa.)
(52-6), is behind only VUU (45.3 ppg.) in CIAA
scoring offense and trails only Elizabeth City
State (8.0 ppg. to 9.5 ppg.) in scoring defense.
Crouch is a story within himself. He was
Nunnie on the Sideline
By Nunnie Robinson, Westside Sports Editor
If you are one of my former
students and you were actively
engaged in class, one literary
element that all English teachers
emphasized in language arts is
irony, so it shouldn’t come as a
surprise to you when I invoke one
of the more poignant, existential
twist of fate in the annals of
sports: Dolphins quarterback Tua
Tagovailoa suffering a concussion
after being tackled by Buffalo Bills
safety Damar Hamlin in Thursday
night’s game at the HardRock. If
you recall, Damar suffered a cardiac
arrest after making a tackle during
a Monday Night Football game
against the Cincinnati Bengals in 2023. Hamlin, hospitalized in
critical condition, who was released nine days later, spent the
remainder of year off the field recuperating and only returned
to play full time this season. Tua, scrambling to secure a first
down, sustain a drive and possible touchdown, unwittingly
attacked Hamlin head first, striking him on his left upper chest
area and arm. From my perspective, Tua initiated the contact
instead of sliding feet first as most coaches advocate. It is even
more baffling given his concussion history with the Dolphins
and at Alabama. I attribute his actions - head first - to instinct
or intuition, assured that if he had processed his thoughts
mentally he would slide feet first if given a mulligan. The
consequences of not doing so are dire, impacting his personal
health, family, teammates and the Dolphins organization.
Like many pundits and sports personalities, I strongly urge
him to consider retirement based on his personal episodes with
concussions and the traumatic, life altering experiences of NFL
players, some of whom have taken their own lives i.e., Junior
Seau of the San Diego Chargers and Chicago Bears’ Dave
Duerson. Of course, that is easy for me to opine, but certainly
not for Tua, a young, gifted athlete who has played the game
that he loves for many years, probably since little league.
It appears that he will follow all medical protocols as well
as NFL guidelines before making a final determination. Will he
return this year if given that option, sit out the remainder of
this year and return next year or decide to retire from football
for good.
The NFL for years had been in denial regarding serious
head injuries, but when the movie Concussion (must view)
starring Will Smith came out in 2015, consideration for player
health and safety became a priority. You may recall Tua being
grabbed and slammed to ground like a rag doll, head bouncing
off the hard surface by defensive linemen. Well, we advocated
for the prohibition of such tactics, believing that once the
defender has control of quarterback , the play ends there - quick
whistle! Just suppose Tua decides to play again and suffers a
life threatening injury, what liability may be directed toward
the League for allowing him to play? Would any renunciation
of responsibility hold up in court. As with everything else, life
goes on until it doesn’t. There is already speculation about who
the Dolphins quarterback will be or whom they should sign
in the interim. Note: the Dolphins signed Hallandale High
alum Tyler Huntley, who has backed up the Baltimore Ravens’
Lamar Jackson for several years.
The WG Sport Corner
Nightmare at the
HardRock
The Bills' Safety Damar Hamlin (3) collides with
Fins' Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa (1) near goal
line, leading to a fourth concussion.
By Nunnie Robinson, Westside Sports Editor
What began as a night of great anticipation and expectation
turned gradually, then emphatically into a lopsided, selfinflicted
gridiron contest of horror. It began promisingly after
the Bills scored on their initial drive, a simple out pass from
Bills Superman quarterback Josh Allen to Miami Central and
Georgia alum James Cook, who easily pranced inside the left
end zone pylon, giving visiting Buffalo a lead they would never
relinquish.
The Dolphins ran the ball effectively at times, utilizing
motion, deception and quick outlet passes to counter a defensive
scheme designed to take away the big, explosive plays that
have become the Dolphins’ staple with Tyreek Hill and Jaylen
Waddle. Here’s the issue from my perspective: too often the
Dolphins fail to maintain momentum because of their inability
to sustain drives on third down offensively while simultaneously
allowing Buffalo to convert crucial third downs, giving Buffalo
dominance in time of possession and more offensive plays,
thus more scoring opportunities via touchdowns or field goals.
Failure offensively to convert in short yardage situations,
often losing yardage, is (anathema) detrimental to scoring.
The Dolphins’ offensive line appears average at best, so losing
starters isn’t good.
And so begins the nightmare. With the score 17-7, the Fins
still in game, backups at left guard and tackle are in game
when a pressured, harassed Tua attempts to throw a pass out of
bounds; it is instead intercepted by Bills cornerback JaMarcus
Ingram, the second of 2, and returned for a touchdown. Tua was
already having a difficult game, completing 17 of 25 passes for
145 yards and 3 interceptions. The noble but ill-advised, futile
effort to throw ball out of bounds ended the scoring, adding to
horrific play on field. The nightmare, however, had yet to reach
the depths of despair. One of the things we love about Tua is
his never say die attitude and love of the game. As he gallantly
attempted a comeback, a fourth down scramble for a first down
near goal line epitomized the Fins’ nightmarish evening.
Tua collided head first with Bills safety Damar Hamlin,
suffering a concussion that ended his night and in all probability
his season. With his concussion-related history, his very NFL
career is in doubt.
The Dolphins have a recent, dismal 2-12 record against
divisional rival Buffalo and the road ahead becomes more
daunting and foreboding. However, it’s only 2 games into
the season and if we’ve learned anything, we can predict or
speculate but until it happens, it’s still the future. More on Tua
in NOTS. Go Fins!
Two-way standout Travis Hunter caught two of Shedeur
Sanders’ four touchdown passes and also had an interception as
Colorado cruised to a 28-9 win over Colorado State on
Saturday night.
Sanders finished 36 of 49 for 310 yards in the first Rocky
Mountain Showdown held in Fort Collins since 1996. Sanders
found LaJohntay Wester for a pair of scores and connected
with Hunter 13 times for 100 yards.
As good of game as it gets for Hunter, who’s a Heisman
Trophy hopeful?
“He can be even better,” Sanders said. “There’s no ceiling.”
This was the seventh straight win by Colorado (2-1) over
Colorado State (1-2). The Rams will have to wait a while to
break the skid, with the in-state rivalry not on the schedule
again until 2029.
“Great. Darn. Victory,” Colorado coach Deion Sanders said.
“We just wanted it to be decisive.”
What’s more, Sanders was kept well-protected by an
offensive line that’s searching for consistency. He was only
sacked one time — in the fourth quarter, and with the game
well in hand.
To show how much the line meant to him, Sanders brought
In her first public comments since she was stripped of a
bronze medal she appeared to have rightfully won, Olympic
gymnast Jordan Chiles said Wednesday she’s still seeking
“justice” and “peace.”
Chiles, speaking at the Forbes Power Women’s Summit in
New York City, said the situation regarding the disputed medal
has taken a severe emotional toll.
“The biggest thing that was taken from me was,” Chiles
said, her voice choking with emotion that forced her into a
14-second delay to compose herself, “the recognition of who I
was, not just my sport, but the person I am.” Chiles, 23, has
said she has had to endure, often on her own, racist internet
criticism in the wake of the international dispute.
“At this rate, it’s not really about the medal; it’s about my
peace and my justice,” she said at the conference. “It’s about
my skin color. It’s about how I felt there weren’t a lot of people
supporting me who I thought could support me.”
The bronze was then awarded to Romanian Ana Bărbosu,
18.
Despite the setback, Chiles still has on her mantle a team
gold from Paris and a bronze earned three years ago in Tokyo.
Chiles, whose father is Black and mother is Latina, said she’s
doing her best to deal with online hate since the controversy
erupted.
“I am a two-time Olympic champion, I am a two-time
Olympian, I am a world champion. I am all those things,”
Chiles said.
What NC Central
coach Trei Oliver
said about ‘big
rivalry’ meeting
with North
By Chris Stevens
(Source: HBCU Sports)
It’s been six years since North
Carolina A&T has visited
O’Kelly-Riddick Stadium on
the campus of North Carolina
Central.
That long spell ends Saturday
night when the Aggies head
to Durham to face an Eagles
team coming off of an inspired
performance at North
Carolina the previous week.
NCCU head coach Trei Oliver
says he is excited for the
opportunity to play a rivalry
game on campus.
“This is a big rivalry; it means
a lot to a whole lot of people,”
Oliver said during Monday’s
