INTRODUCTION 

For our YWAM Family, as both local ministries and as a global movement, 

it is important for us to recognize and understand the current season we 

are in (1st Chron. 12:32). In light of this, many of our YWAM leaders have 

been focusing on the book of Joshua, which holds valuable insights for us 

in this important season. This 21 Days of Prayer & Fasting Guide proved to 

be a useful tool leading up to YWAM Together 2024 (YT24) in Manila. It 

helped prepare our hearts to embrace what God is doing in this season as 

we seek His guidance. Although this devotional was created to prepare us 

for YT24, we recognize that it has wider implications for us in this season 

of generational transition. With this in mind we are sending it as a resource 

with the hope that it will be used in the wider YWAM family to draw from 

the wisdom that God has given us from His word and in this devotional in 

order to walk wisely during this critical season. 

We honour Loren Cunningham, YWAM’s co-founder and inspirational 

visionary leader over the past 64 years before he went to be with the Lord 

in October 2023. He and Darlene have always obeyed the “heavenly 

vision”, following Jesus, the leader of our movement. They were always 

quick to receive and hear the fresh word of the Lord and to lead with 

integrity. They continually made room for younger leaders. In Loren’s own 

words, “the best thing I did was to get out of the way.” We are all 

beneficiaries of his legacy. 

We also mourn the loss and honour the legacy of the pioneering leaders 

tragically killed in Arusha and others around the world in our YWAM family 

who have recently gone to be with the Lord. They have also left a lasting 

legacy and impact. 

After Loren's passing, Darlene felt led to embark on Legacy Tours around 

the world. During this time, God specifically highlighted Joshua 24, 

particularly verse 15b: "as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” 

Examining the book of Joshua, we observe that it begins and ends with two 

generational transitions.

The book of Joshua can be seen as a cohesive unit, with chapter 1 and 

chapter 24 acting as bookends that frame the entire narrative. Naturally, 

this prompts us to ask ourselves a few questions: where is YWAM at in our 

generational transition? What kind of generation will we be in this season? 

As a YWAM family, we stand at a critical juncture. The questions before 

us are clear - will we be a Joshua Generation, courageously claiming the 

promises of the past and carrying them into fulfillment? Or will we 

tragically fall into the ways of the Judges, doing "what was evil in the sight 

of the Lord" (Judges 2:11) and "everyone doing what was right in their 

own eyes" (Judges 21:25)? 

This is a defining moment for our YWAM family. The challenges we face 

are daunting, but the rewards of faithfulness are eternal. As we gather in 

Manila for YT24, let us be a people prepared - ready to hear from the 

Lord, to pray His prayers, and to walk in His purposes. 

This devotional and prayer guide from the Book of Joshua is a humble 

tool to help us recognize the season we are in and the necessity of a 

steadfast response. Let us approach this time with open hearts, ready to 

be shaped and molded by the hand of God. 

The future is ours to steward. Let us be the Joshua Generation - a people 

who boldly advance, claiming the promises of the past and bringing them 

to glorious fulfillment. As we gather post- Manila, may the Lord speak 

powerfully to each of us, as we move forward as a family into this season.

THE MANILA COVENANT 

In August, 1988 some 1500 YWAMers gathered in Manila for an International Staff 

and Leadership Conference. As the event drew to a close they signed the twenty 

affirmations made in this covenantal document. It was a fitting finale to a landmark 

event. Called by Floyd McClung, it was the first such event led by a new generation 

of YWAM leaders. Highlights of the event included Kalafi Moala’s message on the 

release of young people, women and third-worlders into missions leadership and 

our commitment to become two-thirds from the two-thirds world by the end of the 

twentieth century. Another significant milestone was the embrace of the new name 

of the University of the Nations (formerly Pacific and Asia Christian University), 

allowing for the global inclusion of all in this missions-multiplying university. 

This covenant reaffirmed our commitment to young people, stating, “We affirm the 

calling of the Lord upon our mission to mobilize youth for world evangelism. We 

express in this covenant our commitment to see young people mobilized in great 

numbers for world evangelism, and youthful, exuberant world changers be given 

every opportunity to take roles of leadership and influence in our mission.” It went 

on to affirm “male and female in positions of leadership” and that “our staff and 

leadership should be...representative of all nations of the earth” thus furthering the 

de-regulation of missions in innovative ways. 

This document also highlighted the alls and everys in various ways: it spoke of our 

commitment to “evangelism, training, and ministries of mercy...so that by God’s 

grace then the empowering of the Holy Spirit we will do all God asks of us to help 

complete the Great Commission.” It goes on to challenge us to reach the 

unreached with the grid of the “nine frontiers of world evangelism” and give 

ourselves to see Jesus as Lord over “every sphere of life.” It urges us to the twohanded 

approach of the gospel, that is “to love people in both word and deed in 

order to proclaim and demonstrate the Good News of the gospel ” through 

“personal evangelism and...acts of mercy.” It concludes with a holistic call to the 

alls of the Christian Magna Carta. 

The Manila Covenant is a statement of mission prepared and prayed over by the 

leadership of Youth With A Mission and confirmed by 1500 staff workers at the 

Youth With A Mission International Staff and Leadership Conference in Manila, 

Philippines, on August 4, 1988. The covenant’s 20 affirmations declare the values, 

guiding principles and calling of Youth With A Mission. We invite you to join with us 

in the exciting challenge of reaching the world with Christ’s love. 

WE AFFIRM that our calling as a missionary fellowship is to help complete the Great 

Commission. We celebrate the calling of the Lord Jesus upon our mission to be 

involved in evangelism, training, and ministries of mercy. We renew our commitment 

to the Lord and to one another so that by God’s grace then the empowering of the 

Holy Spirit we will do all God asks of us to help complete the Great Commission.

WE AFFIRM the calling of the Lord upon our mission to mobilize youth for world 

evangelism. We express in this covenant our commitment to see young people 

mobilized in great numbers for world evangelism, and youthful, exuberant worldchangers 

be given every opportunity to take roles of leadership and influence in our 

mission. 

WE AFFIRM God’s calling upon our mission to focus on reaching those who have not 

been reached with the Gospel. We declare our desire to see tens of thousands of 

workers mobilized on the following nine frontiers of world evangelism: the Muslim 

world, the Buddhist world, the Communist world, the Hindu world, the Small Half, 

Nominal Christians, the Cities, the Poor and Needy, and Tribal Peoples. 

WE AFFIRM the Lordship of Christ over every sphere of life. We commit ourselves 

to spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ in such a way that his Lordship is proclaimed 

over individual lives, nations, the family and home, the church in all its expressions, 

education, the electronic and printed media, arts and entertainment, the sports 

world, commerce, science and technology, government and politics. We believe that 

this should be done in the same spirit in which Jesus came: as a humble servant, 

laying down his rights and so pleasing his Father. 

WE AFFIRM that God wants Youth With A Mission to be a representative of all 

nations of the earth and that our staff and leadership should be comprised of races 

from Africa, Asia, Australasia, Latin America, Oceania, the Middle East, Europe, and 

North America. 

WE AFFIRM our calling as a mission to love people in both word and deed in order 

to proclaim and demonstrate the Good News of the Gospel. Personal evangelism 

and practical concern alike give witness to Jesus Christ. Accordingly, we will, by 

God’s grace and mercy, proclaim the Good News and perform acts of mercy so that 

men and women will embrace the truth of the Gospel. 

WE AFFIRM the importance of doing God’s work God’s way. We declare our total 

dependence on God for wisdom and ask him to reveal to us any trace of 

paternalism, prejudice, or triumphalism. We choose to follow the example of the 

Lord Jesus who gave up his rights, defending the rights of the poor, and serving 

those he came to minister to in righteous humility. 

WE AFFIRM that God wants both young and old, male and female, in positions of 

leadership and responsibility in our mission. 

WE AFFIRM servant leadership and the importance of being accountable and 

submissive in our leadership styles and attitudes. We confirm the importance of all 

new staff going through a period of culturally appropriate training and orientation to 

help prepare them for service in God’s kingdom. We express our desire for God to 

continually revive and invigorate our discipleship training programs to make them a 

source of encouragement, equipping, and empowering for Christian service. 


WE AFFIRM the importance of a spirit of humility, brokenness, and godly 

transparency in our relationships with one another. We commit ourselves afresh to 

the principles of unity as described by the apostle Paul in Ephesians chapters four 

and five. We accept the responsibility to deal with any character weakness or 

cultural barrier in a manner that would be pleasing to the Lord Jesus and that would 

promote unity within our mission and within the whole Body of Christ. 

WE AFFIRM the importance of living a biblical and balanced life. We believe that we 

need Christians of all theological persuasions and backgrounds in the Body of Christ. 

We need their godly counsel, wisdom, teaching, and help to be all that God has 

intended us to be. 

WE AFFIRM the importance of the local church. We humbly ask God for his grace 

and help to enable us to multiply and build up local churches and to work as 

partners with them for the fulfilment of the Great Commission. 

WE AFFIRM the ministry of prayer and intercession. We declare our total and utter 

dependence upon God and ask him to continually revive our hearts so that we will 

always be a mission that intercedes for the nations and seeks God for his direction 

and guidance. We believe God has called our mission to build everything it does on 

the foundation of prayer, knowing that apart from God’s leading, our best efforts 

will be dead works. We further declare our need for others to pray for us. 

WE AFFIRM the importance of accountability between Youth With A Mission as a 

whole and its various bases, ministries, teams and schools. We confirm our need to 

be in submission to those we serve, those who are over us in the Lord, and those we 

work with as co-laborers. We believe that this spirit of accountability welcomes 

correction, encouragement, and openness in our corporate and personal lives. 

WE AFFIRM the value of the individual. We commit ourselves to pursue the 

equipping, up-building, and empowering of all those God sends to us for the 

fulfilment of his ministry and purpose in their lives. 

WE AFFIRM the ministry of hospitality and commit ourselves to open our bases, 

homes, and hearts to all those God sends to us. We recognize this to be a biblical 

responsibility and we joyfully embrace the privilege of serving and honoring guests, 

teachers, fellow YWAMers, and the poor and needy through this ministry. 

WE AFFIRM the importance of financial accountability. We declare that we as Youth 

With A Mission will live by the highest legal, spiritual, and ethical standards in our 

handling of finances. 

WE AFFIRM that Youth With A Mission is an international movement of Christians 

from many denominations dedicated to presenting Jesus Christ personally to this 

generation, to mobilizing as many as possible to help in this task, and to the training 

and equipping of believers for their part in fulfilling the Great Commission. As 

citizens of God’s kingdom, we are called to love, worship and obey our Lord, to love 

and serve his body, the Church, and to present the whole Gospel for the whole 

person throughout the world. 


WE AFFIRM that the Bible is God’s inspired and authoritative word, revealing that 

Jesus Christ is God’s Son. We believe that man is created in God’s image and that 

he has created us to have eternal life through Christ. Although all men have sinned 

and come short of God’s glory and are eternally lost without Christ, God has made 

salvation possible through the death on the cross and resurrection of Jesus Christ. 

We believe that repentance, faith and obedience are necessary and fitting responses 

to God’s initiative of grace towards us and that God desires all men to be saved and 

to come to the knowledge of the truth. We believe that the Holy Spirit’s power is 

demonstrated in and through us for the accomplishing of Christ’s last 

commandment: Go ye into all the world and preach the Gospel to every creature” 

(Mark 16:15). 

WE AFFIRM the Christian Magna Carta which believes the following basic rights are 

implicit in the Gospel. Everyone on earth has the right to: 

1. Hear and understand the Gospel of Jesus Christ, 

2. Have a Bible available in their own language, 

3. Have a Christian fellowship available nearby, to be able to meet for fellowship 

regularly each week, and to have biblical teaching and worship with others in the 

Body of Christ, 

4. Have a Christian education available for their children, 

5. Have the basic necessities of life: food, water, clothing, shelter, and health care, 

6. Lead a productive life of fulfilment spiritually, mentally, socially, emotionally, and 

physically. 

With the help of God, I, the undersigned, commit myself, by God’s grace, to fulfil 

this covenant and to live for his glory.

T R A N S I T I O N 

“After the death of Moses the servant of the Lord, the Lord said to Joshua the 

son of Nun, Moses’ assistant, ‘Moses my servant is dead. Now therefore arise, 

go over this Jordan, you and all this people, into the land that I am giving you to 

them, to the people of Israel.” 

Joshua 1:1-2 

The biblical narrative in the book of Joshua and its powerful parallels to the current 

season of transition for the YWAM movement is profoundly meaningful. The image 

of the Joshua generation poised to cross the Jordan and take possession of the 

Promised Land resonates deeply with the vision and calling we have as a mission’s 

community. 

Our Promised Land is the nations, the "all’s" and the "every’s" - every unreached 

people group and every mother tongue. 

This clear directive to "GO" compels us to recognize that there is much work yet to 

be done, and we cannot be satisfied with the status quo. We must arise with a 

renewed sense of urgency and determination to take possession of the ground that 

God has called us to occupy. 

Our desire is to see God's kingdom extended to the farthest corners of the earth. As 

the YWAM family, we echo this fervent plea, asking the Lord to grant us our 

Promised Land - the "all’s" and the "every’s," and every mother tongue that has yet 

to hear the life-transforming message of the gospel. 

The clarion calls for "all this people, into the land" resonates powerfully with the 

inclusive nature of God's vision for YWAM. 

This is not about a single leader, but about the collective family of YWAM arising in 

unity to fulfill the Great Commission. Darlene Cunningham's affirmation that Jesus 

is the leader of YWAM is a profound reminder that our movement is not defined by 

any one individual, but by our unwavering commitment to follow the leading of the 

Holy Spirit. 

Who Is Going? "All this people, into the land I am giving them." 

For the Joshua generation, this was about ALL of THEM arising, not just Joshua 

alone. Many have asked who will lead YWAM now that Loren Cunningham has gone. 

Darlene Cunningham has answered clearly - the same person who has led YWAM all 

along, Jesus, is the leader of YWAM! 


For those dissatisfied with this answer, Loren graduated with no title except 

Founder, which cannot be passed on. God is wanting all of YWAM to arise and go 

into the Promised Land in unity. 

In this critical season we must stand guard against the divisive tactics of the enemy, 

who would seek to sow seeds of disunity, comparison, gossip, jealousy, and slander 

within our ranks. 

May the YWAM family rise up in one accord, fixed on the vision and values that have 

defined us from the beginning, determined to see God's plan for the nations unfold 

in our generation. 

As we navigate this season of transition, let us cling to the truth that God is the true 

leader of YWAM, and that He has called us all to arise and go into the Promised 

Land. May our hearts be stirred with a fresh passion for the lost, and may our feet 

be swift to carry the gospel to the ends of the earth. Together, let us press forward 

in the power of the Holy Spirit, unhindered by the schemes of the enemy, and fully 

committed to the unfinished task that lies before us. 

L E T U S P R A Y 

For us as a YWAM family to ARISE in this season like the Joshua 

generation (Ch. 1) and that God would keep us from being like the 

Judges generation (Ch. 24) who waned in their own ways. 

For deeper unity than ever in our YWAM family during this critical 

season. 

Against the strategies of the enemy that would try to attack and 

divide us in this season.

J O S H U A 1 : 3 - 5 : 

R E C E I V I N G T H E 

P R O M I S E S F O R Y W A M 

As we reflect on the verses after the declaration of a generational transition in 

Joshua 1:3-5, we see that God gave Israel five promises. As YWAM, let's consider 

how these promises apply to us as a movement in this season. 

1. Taking New Land: “Every place that the sole of your foot…” - Josh 1:3a 

This is a time for YWAM to go and send like never before. The hour has come for us 

to embrace a spirit of pioneering to a new level, to influence the spheres of society 

that have yet to be reached, to penetrate the enormous cities with the gospel, and to 

risk in the same way we did in the formative years of our movement. 

2. Multi-Generational Promises: “...just as I promised to Moses." - Josh 1:3b 

As we stand at the threshold of a new era for our movement, the truth that God 

makes multi-generational covenants is a profound encouragement. This assures us 

that the promises He has spoken over YWAM are not limited to a single season or a 

single leader. Rather, these are enduring promises that transcend time and 

generations, established upon the immutable character of our covenant-keeping 

God. 

3. Great Expansion: “From the wilderness to the river Euphrates..." - Josh 1:4 

The promise is a sweeping declaration of the expansive territory that God has set 

apart for His people. For the YWAM family, this promise speaks to the vastness of 

the "promised land" that has been entrusted to us - a land that encompasses the 

entire world – every nation, every people group, and every mother tongue. From the 

deserts of the Middle East to the bustling megacities of Asia, from the jungles of 

Africa, the Lord has declared that this world is the inheritance of His people. Let us 

no longer be content with the limits of our own experiences or the confines of our 

own resources. Rather, let us embrace the boundless vision of our God, who has 

called us to be a light to the nations and to see His kingdom advance to the furthest 

corners of the earth. Together, let us arise and take the land! 

4. Nothing Can Stop Us: “No man shall be able to stand…” - Josh 1:5a 

This is an incredibly encouraging truth for the YWAM movement as we look to the 

future. The Lord is raising up a new generation of apostolic pioneers, equipped and 

empowered to go forth and take possession of the promised land - the very nations 

and people groups that have been entrusted to our care. The only thing that can 

hinder us is our own disobedience. YWAM, let us hold fast to this promise and let it 

fuel our obedience, our courage, and our unwavering determination to see God's will 

accomplished in our generation. For when we walk in step with the Lord, no power 

on earth can stand against us. 


5. God is WITH US: “Just as I was with Moses, so I will be with you.” - Josh 1:5b 

Just as God was present and active in the life and ministry of Moses, leading His 

people to the Promised Land, so too has He pledged to be with the YWAM 

movement in a profound and tangible way. The same God of Moses and Loren is 

WITH this next generation. This is a profound and comforting truth that should fill 

our hearts with faith and hope. 


That Faith would ARISE to embrace the multi-generational 

promises God has given us. 

That God would give us deep confidence that HE is with US like He 

was with Moses, Loren and into the next generations. 

For a release of apostolic pioneering into the largest cities, most 

isolated islands, most unreached corners and all spheres.

C O U R A G E O U S L E A D E R S H I P 

After the five promises of Joshua 1:3-5, we see God give His people six instructions 

in Joshua 1:6-9 in order to take the promised land. As a YWAM family God has 

given us promises and He also want to give us instructions to help us in our 

obedience, unto Him being glorified in the nations. 

Half or three of the instructions are for Joshua and his generation to be strong and 

courageous. This is directly connected to their concern, insecurity and fears 

regarding the generational transition from Moses to Joshua’s generation. As YWAM 

we must be honest that with Loren’s recent graduation to heaven, we also have 

concerns, insecurity and fears. In the midst of these real feelings, we must receive 

God’s instructions regarding our season. 

1. Be Strong & Courageous 

This is one instruction given three times (1:6a, 1:7a, 1:9a) because of the reality of 

the generational transition that God’s people are facing. Specifically. The generation 

of Joshua, which was like a “Bridge Generation,” had immense pressure to ensure 

that God’s people would obey and receive all that God had promised. 

2. You will Inherit the Land 

As YWAM we are called to all nations, cities, the frontiers, spheres and the most 

isolated. God is instructing us to GO to INHERIT the land! We recognize that our 

going is intrinsically connected to our training which happens through the University 

of the Nations, which is our “Multiplier for Missions” to the inherit the land. 

3. Do According to the Law of Moses & the Book of the Law 

These are two unique instructions (1:7-8) that are intrinsically connected and are 

critical for us as YWAM. The two instructions speak to our commitment to the Bible 

and to our Vision, Values and DNA that God has called us to submit to. 

Loren Cunningham's final public stand, where he passionately called YWAM to a 

renewed focus on "Ending Bible Poverty Now," is a powerful testament to the 

centrality of the Bible in our movement's DNA. Loren's consistent exhortation - 

"that is who we are as YWAM, we are all about JESUS and all about the BIBLE!" - 

should echo in the hearts of every YWAMer, both past, present and future. 

This commitment to the authority and sufficiency of Scripture must remain the 

unwavering foundation upon which YWAM is built. As a "bridge generation,” 

entrusted with stewarding the legacy and vision of the past. We must ensure that the 

Word of God continues to permeate every aspect of YWAM's ministry and culture, 

while at the same time holding fast to our unique calling as YWAM reflected in our 

vision, values and DNA. 



That our multi-generational family would ARISE to be strong and 

courageous in this very challenging season of generational 

transition. 

That many would step up to “Inherit the Land” that God has 

promised us, including cities, isolated islands, all spheres and 

unreached frontiers. 

That we would continue to affirm our commitment to the authority 

of the Bible and to our YWAM vision, values and DNA.

T H E I M P O R T A N C E O F 

C O R P O R A T E A G R E E M E N T & 

C O R P O R A T E A C C O U N T A B I L I T Y 

All of us have experienced what it takes to prepare for something that we have 

anticipated for a long time. This could be a trip to a country we have prayed for 

many years or to go and “spy” out the land. We know that a key element for success 

as we embark into a new venture is to be well prepared. From Joshua 1:10-18 let’s 

observe three important aspects of our preparation as we embark on this important 

season as YWAM: 

1. Preparation and Mobilization of the People 

Joshua’s first step to prepare for the journey of crossing the Jordan was to mobilize 

the people. In Joshua 1:10-11, he commands the officers of the people to go 

through the camp and tell the people to get ready, because in three days they will 

cross the Jordan River and take possession of the land that the Lord is giving them. 

2. Commitment to Support One Another 

This passage shows Joshua modeling the unity and cooperation required of all the 

tribes to complete the conquest of Canaan that God had promised them. This 

required a high level of effort in keeping and building unity. In Joshua 1:12-15, he 

reminds the two-and-a-half tribes that they had previously agreed to send their 

fighting men across the Jordan with the rest of the Israelites to help conquer the 

land, even though their inheritance was on the east side of the Jordan. 

3.Accountability and Mutual Submission 

In Joshua 1:16-18, the people promise to obey Joshua in all things, just as they had 

obeyed Moses. They promised that whoever rebelled against Joshua's commands 

would be put to death. They pledge their full support and agree to be held 

accountable. 

As YWAM in this season, the lessons of Joshua are invaluable and hold strategic and 

revelatory elements as we look ahead to the future. This passage emphasizes the 

importance of these three aspects of mobilizing unity, cooperation, and shared 

responsibility. Their corporate agreement and commitment to support one another, 

as well as their willingness to be held accountable, were crucial for success. 



God would you help us be prepared to mobilize all of YWAM into 

deep unity and collaboration for the future. 

That we would support one another more deeply than ever before in 

our YWAM family. 

That we would all mutually submit to one another in deep levels of 

accountability, so that we are prepared for the future.

“Then the two spies came… They said to Joshua, “The LORD has surely given the 

whole land into our hands; all the people are melting in fear because of us.” 

Joshua 2:23-24 

As we reflect on YWAM’s history, we are in awe at how God has shown Himself 

faithful in so many amazing ways. In Joshua 2:1, Joshua sends out spies to see the 

land that God promised the children of Israel. The spies come back with a great 

report. In vs.24, “‘Yes! God has given the whole country to us.’” They believed God 

at His word, taking Him literally. 

If we remember the last time the spies were sent out in Numbers 13, ten of them 

came back with a negative report. "The giants are too big, they will devour us, we 

can’t go up there." This report in Joshua 2 is in intentional contrast from the 

previous spies to highlight that they believed God's promises and acted upon them. 

This is a new season in YWAM. One of our keys in the past, and that is much needed 

for the future, is to walk in complete TRUST in God. Joshua and his men went on 

across the Jordan to take down the walls of Jericho. In YWAM, the vision of the 

waves is still incomplete. God has called us to go where we are not, to preach Christ 

to the whole world (Mk 16:15). There are still many new areas to pioneer in: 

3.4 billion unreached globally, including 1.9 billion Muslims who need the Hope 

of Christ 

Over 7,000 mother tongues that need the Bible translated 

Also 56% of the world's population living in cities (consider the city of Jericho 

the initial strategy for taking the land) 

1.1 billion people live in poverty, which is 18% of the world's population 

For this next season in YWAM, will we take God at His word, like the spies did (Josh 

2) or will we be the skeptical spies (Num 13)? If we will take God at his word, what 

will it take? Here are two keys for us to consider: 

1. To Walk in Risky Faith 

Joshua’s men were radical when they took the steps to walk through the Jordan 

river or to walk around the walls of Jericho. What radical things is God calling us to 

do or see as we move forward? It will take a generation with risky faith to see God 

do the seemingly impossible. Do we see things from God’s perspective or our 

perspective? Do we believe God at His word for the impossible? Do we have the 

assurance of things hoped for that come by faith (Heb11:1.)? 


2. Hindrances to Receiving God’s Promises 

We must guard against the temptation to become comfortable and not willing to take 

risks. At times in YWAM we can become too comfortable, trying to protect what we 

have out of fear and not take risks. We must also guard that we do not become 

proud of our "success." All that we have in YWAM is simply because of God. 

Because of this may we walk in deep humility, believing Him for the impossible 

moving into the future. 

How are we walking today? Are we still trusting God according to His promises? Are 

we willing to continue to be radical, to have risky faith to move into the places where 

we are not? Can we ask ourselves: have we become too comfortable to take risky 

steps doing new things in new ways in order to see the vision of the waves 

accomplished? 


God please help us guard against getting too comfortable, from 

trying to protect what we have and from becoming proud. 

God please help us to commit to being a people that walks in risky 

faith as we move into the future. 

God, will you mark us with your heart for the mega-cities like 

Jericho, the unreached, the Bible-less mother tongue languages and 

the least of these.

J O S H U A 3 : 1 - 4 : 

T H E I M P O R T A N C E O F T H E 

P R E S E N C E O F G O D L E A D I N G 

U S I N T H I S S E A S O N 

This is a key moment for the Joshua generation as they have waited a long time for 

this moment. The instructions were clear: in order to cross over and enter into the 

promised land, they must only move when the ark moves, and to follow it. 

Why? Because they had never been this way before. It was the dawn of a new day. 

Earlier in their journey they will have remembered how God had clearly said to 

Moses that the presence of God was the only distinguishing mark as a people. Even 

Moses had said, “if your presence does not go with us, do not send us up from here” 

(Exod 33:15). 

They had journeyed for decades together, similar to how God has led us as a YWAM 

family to journey together for decades. It would have been easy in this transitional 

moment to walk in presumption, but they were told to “move out and follow the ark” 

(Josh 3:3). God's people were now being instructed to keep their eyes upon it and 

follow where it led them as they prepared to enter a new and unknown phase. No 

longer are they being led by the pillar of cloud and fire, but they are to follow the 

Ark... the presence of God. 

Then we read that they were not to come near the Ark – “that there should be a 

space between you and it, about 2,000 cubits (over half a mile). Do not come near it 

so that you may know the way by which you should go” (Josh 3:4). Their eyes were 

to be upon the presence of God. There were a couple of million people there and if 

the Israelites had crowded in around the Ark, the result would have been chaos. 

There would have been about ten committees, all deliberating which was the way to 

go! But God said: 'I want you to keep well back and keep your eyes upon My 

presence and follow Me.' 

Joshua tells the people that by maintaining this distance from the Ark, they will know 

the way they must go. The distance between the people and the ark represents a 

need for reverence of the Holiness of God. In unity together, in obedience with a 

deep trust in God and His presence leading them, this was how they would know 

they were heading in the right direction. 

There is nothing more important for us as a YWAM family than to be a people of His 

presence. God is calling us to learn afresh, to hunger after, steward, and be led 

continually by God's presence. In His presence we are liberated, healed, fulfilled, 

and baptized in faith and hope. In His presence, all human desire is completely 

satisfied. 


Let us join the psalmist with a renewed cry of “Better is one day in your courts than a 

thousand elsewhere” (Ps 84:10). Let us press in and yearn again for His nearness, 

for His voice and leadership over our lives, families, and the mission. We must want 

Him, not just because of what He can do for us, or even in us, but mostly just 

because of who He is to us! Everything. 

Psalm 16:11 promises ”He will make known to us the path of life, and that in His 

presence is the fullness of joy.” 


God, we thank you for your presence, that you are with us, that you 

are for us, and that your leadership is perfect. 

We confess that without you we don’t know where to go, we’ve 

never been here before. We ask, “unless your presence goes before 

us, don’t send us.” 

We commit to seek your face, to listen to your voice and to steward, 

value, and have a deep reverence for your presence.

A C A L L T O 

C O N S E C R A T I O N 

In Joshua 3, God prepares his people for the next season by calling them to 

“consecrate themselves.” This word “consecrate” is the Hebrew word “qāḏaš” 

pronounced kaw-dash. It means to be “holy” - set apart, sanctified, hallowed, 

separate, to prepare or dedicate. As we read throughout the Original Testament, we 

see that the process of sanctification (typically used for bathing and changing 

clothes) was symbolic of preparing for new beginnings or seasons of change. We see 

this when Jacob returned to Bethel (Gen 35:1-3), at Mount Sinai (Ex 19:9-15), after 

King David & Bathsheba's son died (2 Sam 12:20) and several other occurrences. 

Consecration appears to be a critical process in transition. As YWAM, this is the 

exact phase of transition that we are currently facing as a mission and this process of 

consecration is key. 

In this segment of scripture, Joshua told the people that they needed to prepare 

themselves by becoming holy for the great things that God was about to do. Through 

the process of consecration, he was making sure the Israelites’ hearts were ready for 

the next big step of crossing the Jordan. 

In this season, this is the posture we need to take. We are to consecrate ourselves 

before God, to prepare for Him to do something special among us, which will launch 

us into the next decades in our mission. We need to make sure that we are obeying 

Him in every area of our lives and that nothing is contaminating our relationship with 

Him. As Paul instructs us, we are to “cleanse ourselves from all defilement of flesh 

and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God” (2nd Cor 7:1). 

The call to consecration/holiness should also form part of our daily living. God told 

the people of Israel, “I am the Lord your God; consecrate yourselves and be holy, 

because I am holy” (Lev 11:44). Peter quotes this in the New Testament (1 Pet 1:15- 

16), reinforcing that this is God’s command for us as believers. 

This is not a new call for us as YWAM. It forms part of our Core Beliefs: “Holiness: 

We are called to lead holy and righteous lives that exemplify the nature and 

character of God.” 

As the question is posed to us in this season of transition, “What kind of generation 

will we be?” We choose to be the Joshua generation, embracing the call to holiness 

just like our fathers did and consecrating ourselves to prepare to enter into this next 

season of our promised land. 



Lord, make us Holy as you are Holy. Like the generation that has 

gone ahead of us, we want to be “vessels for honourable use, set 

apart as Holy, useful to the Master and ready for every good work” 

(2 Timothy 2:20). 

Convict us individually and corporately of anything that is 

hindering us that we may respond with repentance. 

We trust that you will do wonders among us as we choose to walk 

into this next season with faith that we will inherit the promises of 

the past.

H A S D O N E 

In Joshua 4, Israel is finally crossing the Jordan into the promised land. They had 

been dreaming about it for the last 40 years while wandering in the desert. The older 

men in the group would have been just children when they left Egypt and crossed the 

Red Sea. Most likely they grew up wondering if this land of Canaan even existed. But 

now they stood on the verge of God’s promises for their future. 

The day had come for them to enter the land “flowing with milk and honey.” And 

then, God did it again. As in the story, all of them had heard about, and a few of 

them even remembered, God parting the waters of the Red Sea to allow them to 

escape Egypt. God did it again. This time, he was parting the Jordan River to enable 

them to enter the promised land. The priests carrying the Ark of God’s presence 

went first, followed by the 40,000-strong army that went ahead of all the people. 

These guys were ready to go; they were ready to attack and possess the land. They 

were on a mission! 

But then an incredible thing happened. God said STOP what you are doing, pick up 

stones from the middle of the river, and build an altar of remembrance. Why? To 

serve as a sign among you. In the future, when your children ask you, ‘What do 

these stones mean?’ tell them that the flow of the Jordan was cut off before the ark 

of the covenant of the Lord. When it crossed the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan 

were cut off. These stones will be a memorial to the people of Israel forever” (Josh 

4:6-7 NIV). 

What a breathtaking scene it must have been! A group of millions of people, having 

just witnessed an incredible miracle, now enter the Promised Land with hearts full of 

excitement and anticipation. This is so characteristic of us as YWAMers, from our 

DTS students on outreach, ready to share God's love with the world to our seasoned 

missionaries ready for the next challenge. But in the midst of their eagerness, God 

gently interrupts and says, 'Stop for a moment and remember what I have done.' 

At YWAM, we are great at starting things, pioneering new ministries, and taking the 

gospel to hard-to-reach places. Unfortunately, too often, we are not good at 

stopping and remembering what God has done. In this season, it is more important 

than ever to remember the God-sized stories in our lives and our ministries as a 

testimony to the Lord. 

Why? Because the moment we stop looking at God and remembering what he has 

done in our lives and ministries is the same moment that we start looking at 

ourselves and praising our achievements. As a YWAM family, may we remember to 

keep our focus on God's glory and avoid self-centered praise. 



We commit to stopping to remember what you have done so that we 

would not forget your story and so that you get all the glory. 

In this season, we pray for protection against pride and selfishness 

and that our ministries and locations are a testimony of what you 

have done and never to what we have done.

O U R G I L G A L M O M E N T 

In Joshua 5, we witness a pivotal moment as Israel crosses into the promised land. 

Joshua and Israel entered and stationed themselves at Gilgal. Here is where God 

took them on a deep and profound journey of realignment, transition and complete 

surrender to the leadership of God. 

Like Israel, YWAM is at a pivotal Gilgal moment where we must be attentive to God's 

directive to ensure we move forward into the future in alignment and complete 

surrender to His leadership. Let us look at how God deals with His people at Gilgal, 

to learn how He wants to deal with us in this season: 

Gilgal as a Place of Realignment (Josh 5:2-8): 

Under Joshua's leadership, this new generation was yet to be circumcised. 

Circumcision was a covenantal sign, the seal of remembrance that Israel wore on 

their flesh. Before the conquest began, it was essential for the new generation to 

align themselves with the family story, the covenants, and the laws that the previous 

generations had stewarded. 

Gilgal as a Place of Transition (Josh 5:8-12): 

In Hebrew, Gilgal means “to roll.” Here, God rolled away the reproach of Egypt, 

symbolizing a new day for Israel (5:9). Gilgal was a transition from their former 

identity as enslaved people in Egypt to becoming the covenantal people of God. God 

washed away Israel's former identity as enslaved people and they became an army 

ready for conquest. Gilgal was a significant moment of transition for the the future. 

Gilgal as a Place of Encounter with the Lord (Josh 5:13-15): 

At Gilgal, Joshua encountered the Commander of the Lord's army. This divine 

encounter reaffirmed the Joshua Generation’s calling under God's authority. The 

whole generation submitted themselves, recognizing that true success for conquest 

only comes from God's leadership and guiding presence alone! 

As a YWAM movement, how will we respond to this season that is so clearly a 

Gilgal moment? Let us consider how we should respond to these three aspects from 

Israel’s Gilgal Moment: 

A Generational ReAlignment: 

Israel was blessed as a nation when new generations walked by God's Law passed 

down to them by older generations. In contrast in Judges 2, a new generation arose 

that forgot the way of the previous generation, which led to Israel's demise. The next 

generation of YWAM leaders must carry the lessons, values and covenants that God 

has given us in our hearts. We must be intentional and prayerful to share, impart 

and empower young leaders in our mission to carry the DNA of YWAM deep in their 

bones! 


Embracing the Generational Transitions: 

We are no doubt in a transitional season as a mission. As Israel transitioned from 

slaves to conquerors, we must return to our true identity, allowing God to use us to 

take the promised land for Him. For YWAM, the promised land is every unreached 

tribe to be reached, every language to have a bible, the poor to be loved and to go 

where we are not! 

Submitting to the Commander: 

Jesus is the leader of YWAM. He always has been and always will be! YWAM is not 

led nor directed by one individual, but by King Jesus, speaking and directing us 

together in unity. Let us continually submit ourselves to His leadership, guidance, 

and word! As we do this, we will inherit ALL He has for us! 


God come and continue to align us to our vision and values at this 

key Gilgal moment. 

Please take us deeper in embracing this generational transition, 

walking in our original apostolic identity as YWAM. 

God help us corporately and individually submit completely to your 

leadership, not looking for a Joshua, but looking to you Jesus to 

lead us into our promise land.

T H E A N O I N T I N G F A L L S 

O N A G E N E R A T I O N 

As we read in Joshua 3:5, Joshua says to the people of Israel, “Consecrate 

yourselves, for tomorrow the Lord will do amazing things among you.” 

The command for consecration did not go out simply to a leader or the leadership 

team – it went out to the whole generation. It was a call for the whole community, 

including women and children to make themselves holy – ready to take the land of 

their inheritance. 

Joshua 6 marks two major changes in the journey of the exodus from Egypt to the 

Promised Land. The first change we see is that under Moses’ leadership, the ark of 

the covenant (representing God’s presence) remained primarily in the Tent of 

Meeting. Those that were allowed to enter the Tent were primarily leaders, mainly 

Moses and Joshua. However, in Joshua 6, we see the ark of the covenant in the 

midst of the people – empowering the entire community. As the people advance 

against Jericho it says in Joshua 6:9, “the armed guard marched ahead of the priests 

who blew the trumpets, and the rear guard followed the ark.” 40,000 armed men 

marched ahead of the ark and behind the ark, surrounding it as they marched. The 

presence of God, represented by the ark, embedded among the people and anointed 

a generation to take the land. 

The second change we see is that leadership moved from resting on one leader to 

resting on the entire community. In the 40 years of Moses’ leadership, almost all the 

miracles happened at the hand of Moses. In Joshua 6 we see the miracle at Jericho 

handed to an army of 40,000 people. Joshua 6:20 says, “When the trumpets 

sounded, the army shouted, and at the sound of the trumpet, when the men gave a 

loud shout, the wall collapsed!” The community commanded the miracle! In Joshua 

6, we see a shift in the apostolic anointing of one man empowered by the presence 

of God, to the apostolic anointing of a whole generation empowered by the presence 

of God to take the land! 

As YWAM transitions from the Moses generation to the Joshua generation, we are 

seeing a shift from leadership resting on one man and his vision to leadership resting 

on the entire YWAM community to take up our apostolic anointing and take the 

land(s) that God has promised us! Loren and Darlene have led the way under the 

leadership of Christ – now the torch is being passed to us to carry on the vision of 

the waves, a torch that is being passed to ALL of us – an apostolic anointing that 

rests on our global community to march forward, with the presence of God in our 

midst to take the “Jericho strongholds” of our generation for the glory of God. 



We cry out that Your presence, God, would be amongst us in a deep 

way and that it would forever be embedded in who we are as 

YWAM. 

We cry out that a new level of your apostolic anointing would fall 

on this Joshua Generation in order to take the promised lands you 

have given us. 

We pray would you begin a new season of seeing un-conquerable 

places like Jericho, miraculously fall into your hands as we contend 

for the future as a community.

“But the Lord said to Joshua, ‘Get up! Why are you lying on your face like this?’ 

Israel has sinned...” 

Joshua 7:10 

After an unprecedented victory against Jericho in which all of Israel obeyed God’s 

unusual instructions, Joshua and company decided it would be an easy matter to 

attack Ai. The result was sound defeat and the death of 36 men. Joshua and his men 

were “paralyzed with fear” and their “courage had melted away” after what should 

have been a relatively easy victory at Ai. 

The reason? There was sin in the camp. Achan had stolen, lied and hidden. 

God required ruthless dealing with sin. He also would not allow Joshua and the 

leaders to remain in self-pity, regret, defeat or question God’s leadership. Instead, 

He required them to arise, deal with their sin and purify themselves. Once they had 

done this, the Lord spoke to Joshua again to not be afraid or discouraged but to 

attack Ai (Josh. 8:1). 

The Lord has dealt many times with us in YWAM over our sin, presumption and 

failure. Often schools, meetings and gatherings have been marked with God dealing 

with us over seemingly minor issues of compromise. A clean heart is a basic 

requirement for a life of intercession and leadership. May we posture our hearts like 

the psalmist who prays, “Create in me a clean heart, O God” (Ps. 51:10). 

In this transitional time in our mission, let us intercede for those who may have fallen 

short or become stuck in current circumstances, for those who are in a place of fear 

and lack of courage. 



Lord, forgive every sin of presumption where we have acted in our 

own strength and not waited for your instructions. Lord forgive 

every sin in our own camp. Forgive the sins that have so grieved us 

and you in the Body of Christ. 

Lord, we choose to purify our own hearts through your cleansing 

blood. 

Help us at your leading to arise with courage out of our self-pity, 

regret, failure, grief and condemnation into a place of unrelenting 

obedience to your specific instructions in the battles you have called 

us to. Amen.

R E T U R N I N G T O S E E K I N G 

G O D I N D E T A I L 

Throughout the book of Joshua we have seen the theme of generations. Every 

generation has to learn the ways of God, doing His work in His way - and not 

depending on the past victories and breakthroughs of others, rather depending on 

Him in every new circumstance. 

Joshua chapter 8 comes as the people of Israel recover after a humiliating defeat at 

Ai. They return to listening to the Lord, walking in obedience to his commands and 

to sanctifying the people. The Lord speaks, they obey in detail, and set an ambush 

for the people of Ai. 

Although the Lord had promised decades earlier to that generation that they will 

possess the promised land, they still had to follow God’s way of accomplishing it. 

Self-confidence and a lack of holiness had led them to defeat. Fear and the 

temptation to shrink back in unbelief was not far away, so the Lord says, again to 

Joshua, and therefore to the people, “fear not nor be dismayed” (overwhelmed). 

On Day 1 of this prayer focus we read our YWAM “Promised Land” is the nations, 

the “all’s’ and the “every’s’ - every unreached people group and every mother 

tongue. There will be fear, there will be setbacks and at times feelings of being 

overwhelmed – but taking time to listen to the Lord, stay together in unity, and soak 

in his Word will keep us focused. 

After following God’s plan, they succeed in taking Ai. Joshua immediately turns to 

God’s word rather than to celebrate. He reads the entire law of Moses before the 

people. He models the foundations for fruitful ministry, not drawing attention to 

himself as leader, but to the only true leader and His word. 

In a similar way to the people of Israel, YWAM has had no shortage of the Lord 

proving His unfailing promises - miracles of circumstance and provision, and open 

doors to impact nations. Most importantly there is no shortage of God’s word to 

guide, encourage and correct as we follow apostolic passion and patterns to reach 

the “every’s and the alls.” 

When we face the task of blessing the nations with kindness and compassion and 

seeing the scriptures in every Mother Tongue, along with multiplying ecclesia among 

the least, last and lost, let us not be overwhelmed, because as we see in Joshua 8, it 

can be done. 



May this season be one in which we renew our commitment to seek 

and repent for any ways we have walked in presumption or 

dependence on previous victories. 

We choose like Joshua to celebrate the fruitfulness of YWAM by 

focusing on You, King Jesus, and remembering Your Word. 

We pray that we would be filled with courage and all fear and sense 

of overwhelm would melt away as we prepare to take our promised 

lands.

Our biggest vulnerability can come at times after a great victory has been won. 

YWAM is 64 years old and has seen great breakthroughs in many areas and nations. 

It is with all certainty that God has led us and we have followed the wonderful 

leaders who have gone before us, who taught us the ways of God and heard Him for 

ourselves. At the same time, it is so easy to think that we know how things need to 

be done and rely on our own discernment, experiences and wisdom. 

As we look today at Joshua 9, the army had just defeated Ai when the Gibeonites 

came to them to make a treaty to become the servants of Israel. They were deceitful 

and disguised themselves as people that have traveled from afar because of the dry 

bread, old and cracked wine skins and worn-out shoes and clothes. 

It says clearly that Israel examined their food but did not consult the Lord (Josh 

9:14). They moved in presumption and were deceived. This is a time that we have to 

be aware of the enemy's tactics and how he will come in covert ways to attack us. 

This will not only be in our areas of weaknesses but also in our areas of strengths, 

where we think we know better and that we don’t need to inquire of God. 

The momentum God has built up over the years in YWAM can take us very far. The 

enemy’s temptation is not so much in our lack of activity but for us to do more good 

things and keep us busy instead of walking closely to God and in dependence on 

Him. We want to bear much fruit as we abide in Him and be aware that apart from 

Him, we can do nothing (John 15). It is clear from this section in Joshua that it can 

become disastrous when we rely on our good ideas and move in presumption and 

independence. 

As we see in Joshua this can have implications and impact many generations. To 

avoid this deception of the enemy we need to press into God to show us the real 

motivations of our hearts and where we move in presumption. We also need to walk 

with others who can help us see our blind spots, to live a less hurried life and to draw 

on God’s bountiful resources to nurture and renew us. This will empower us to deal 

with the enemy’s covert attacks to get us off track. In the midst of it all, God is 

gracious and spared the lives of the Gibeonites and offers us valuable lessons on 

how to walk by faith and not by sight. 



May the Lord forgive us where we have moved in presumption and 

relied on our strength and wisdom and not inquired of Him in our 

decision making, strategies and initiatives. 

May the Lord continue to be gracious to us as we are quick to 

repent and align to His ways. 

May the Lord give us discernment how to deal with the deceptive 

attacks of the enemy and that we will not be caught off guard but 

that we will be alert in the Spirit.

In this section of Joshua, we see two types of attacks from the enemy. In the last 

chapter we saw an overt attack by the Gibeonites tricking Israel. Here in Chapter 10, 

we see a covert attack of the enemy, as five kings come against God’s people. Over 

the last 10 years our founder Loren has warned us about coming persecution and 

attacks and so as a family we must be on guard against both types of attacks. 

In Chapter 10, God gives Israel many victories to the Joshua generation, but it all 

starts by the Joshua generation protecting the Gibeonites because they stayed true 

to their promise. As the Joshua generation kept their word, God honored their 

integrity and gave them numerous and significant victories. In this season of 

generational transition, God wants to give us as YWAM numerous and significant 

victories as we conquer new lands. 

For the Joshua Generation, in order to see these amazing victories God shows his 

power through two significant miracles. First, God sends hailstones killing more men 

than the army and next, the sun stands still so that Israel can accomplish the 

victories and as a sure sign that God is with them. Just like Moses’ generation 

experienced the miracles of the Red Sea and manna from heaven, now Joshua’s 

generation is experiencing this same power of their miraculous God in fresh ways in 

their generation. Our YWAM family history is full of the miraculous and in this 

generational transition we should expect to see a fresh release of the miraculous 

onto greater victories. 

After the first part of the chapter where Israel defeats the five kings, Israel then goes 

on in confidence as Joshua declares: “Do not be afraid or dismayed; be strong and 

courageous. For thus the LORD will do to all your enemies against whom you fight” 

(Josh 10:25). 

Notice how God told Joshua to be “strong and courageous” four times in Chapter 1. 

Now Joshua is imparting this faith into all of God’s people because God is not raising 

up a man but he is using a generation. As a result of this, Israel goes on to defeat six 

more cities in the end of the chapter and we see them conquer most of the southern 

territory in this short time. 

Two chapters later in chapter 12, we see the list of victories that Moses generation 

had, followed by the Joshua generation victories. Moses’ generation conquered 3 

nations/peoples. In contrast Joshua’s generation conquered 31 nations/people 

groups. The Joshua generation saw over 10 times more victories than the first 

generation. 

As YWAM moves into this generational transition we believe God wants to give us an 

increase of victories for this next generation to take the promises God has given us. 



As YWAM we would walk in integrity, staying true to our covenants 

and promises to the Lord in this generation. 

That we would see an increase and a fresh release of the 

miraculous in this season to see major victories. 

That as we saw Joshua’s generation have major victories (Ch. 10), 

that YWAM’s next generation would see new pioneering into many 

unreached areas, mega-cities, isolated islands and spheres of 

society.

The story of Joshua's conquest of the land continues in Chapter 11, recounting a 

decisive victory in battle that Joshua and the Israelites achieved. Despite only having 

foot soldiers, they were able to defeat a massive army equipped with state-of-the-art 

military technology. This chapter details how Joshua and the army carried out ALL 

of what the Lord had told them to do. 

There are clear parallels between this story and our YWAM tribe. We often venture 

out without the resources, experience, or even the skills. With this perceived lack, 

we attempt to do radical things for God that seem crazy to better-resourced 

ministries. This spirit in YWAM is not born out of bravado but rather from a 

willingness to embrace the Word of the Lord. If He said it, we want to do it or at 

least make a start. In this spirit, we have spread throughout the nations and 

developed an extraordinary diversity of expression and ministry. 

As we are in this season of leadership transition, the Word of the Lord should remain 

our north star. We should always embrace ALL of what the Lord shows us to do. As 

we do so, we must recognize that we are not operating in a vacuum. The Lord has 

been speaking to us for 64 years, and we have the framework of the Legacy Words 

to guide us as the foundation of the scope of our calling. 

In other words, no matter what else the Lord leads us to do, we should at least be 

fulfilling the Legacy Words to us as YWAM: 

1. The Waves: Mobilizing the next generation of college-age youth to missions 

(without neglecting our rich multi-generational family. 

2. The 7 Spheres: Working within the church sphere, but collaborating with all 

spheres to build God's kingdom together. 

3. The Christian Magna Carta: Ensuring that every person in the world has the 

gospel, a Bible in their mother tongue, a local church, Biblical Christian education, 

the basic necessities of life, and the possibility to live the John 10:10 abundant life 

of Jesus. 

4. Ending Bible Poverty Now: Engaging in every way possible to see every mother 

tongue engaging and being transformed by God’s Word. 


Joshua 11 challenges us to embrace all of this. Like Joshua, we may not have the 

capacity needed, but it is vital that we get going! Embracing our Legacy Words is our 

foundation; the Lord will also give us further directions, but our Legacy Words are 

foundational In the next 60 years, we will have to start missions in new ways, to 

share the Gospel through AI and through other platforms while retaining our 

personal ethos. Whatever the future holds, the key is that we embrace who God has 

called us to be as YWAM by doing “ALL the Lord commanded” and see God make 

the victory again in this generation. 


May we as YWAM embrace all of what God has for us. May we not 

shrink back from the audacious vision of seeing God's kingdom 

through our tribe. May we never put God in a box and say that we 

don't have the resources, experience, or even the skills. 

Let our spirits always embrace the whole of the calling of YWAM as 

in the Legacy Words, but also let us always go beyond and embrace 

the new Word of the Lord that comes though the youngest DTS 

student to the most experienced YWAM leader. 

May we treasure the Word of the Lord, and as we do, we will 

transition into the new season for YWAM.

“ M U C H L A N D R E M A I N S 

T O B E C O N Q U E R E D … ” 

In Joshua 12-13, we have reached the halfway mark of the book of Joshua and as 

we do let’s reflect on the big picture of the story of Joshua. Chapter 1 starts with the 

death of the servant leader Moses and the appointment of Joshua as the new 

servant leader of the people of Israel. Moses and Joshua are servant leaders 

because it is God who is leading his people. God first called his people into a 

covenantal relationship with himself. Out of that covenantal relationship, he gave 

specific guidance and instructions on what they were to inherit and battle for. 

Joshua 24 tells the story of the end of Joshua’s life; he recounts the 

multigenerational story of God at work with the people of Israel going back to 

Abraham. Joshua takes the time to renew this covenantal understanding with the 

people of Israel, positioning them for future fruitfulness. 

In our YWAM story, our servant leader Loren Cunningham has graduated and gone 

to be with God. Our mission movement is international and decentralized. We don’t 

have one singular Joshua figure who we will now look to for leadership. Instead our 

trust is in God himself. Through the empowerment of the Holy Spirit, we have many 

types of Joshua servant leaders among us. They are getting instructions for the next 

battle and new assignments from God. YWAM’s vision has always been, “To Know 

God and Make Him Known.” We must continue to pay the price to know God if we 

want to continue to multiply and bear Kingdom fruit. 

Joshua 12 lists 31 kings that were defeated and all the territories that were 

inherited. In our YWAM story, we have many victories, achievements, and territories 

we have inherited. We have impacted millions for the gospel of Jesus Christ, sent 

teams to every nation on earth, believed God for countless evangelism initiatives, 

served the poor in a wide variety of ways, and created discipleship programs 

anchored in a huge global university. Wow, all Glory to God, but we are not done! 

“… much land remains to be conquered.” Joshua 13:1 

Joshua 13 reminds us…much land remains to be conquered. In our YWAM story, 

our four Legacy Words create a beautiful framework from which God has spoken to 

us about our core assignments that we are to embrace. Our Legacy Words are more 

than a list of past encounters with God, they are a roadmap for our future. The key 

to unlocking our future fruitfulness as a mission movement is twofold: We must stay 

committed to knowing God and we must stay aligned with our four Legacy Words in 

how we make him known. 



May our heart cry as a YWAM movement be to know God. To dwell 

and abide with him in intimate friendship and fellowship. 

We pray out of this overflow of rich fellowship, and with the 

empowerment of the Holy Spirit, help us embrace our God-given 

legacy assignments as a multigenerational mission movement. 

Finally, according to John 15:16, “…I chose you. I appointed you to 

go and produce lasting fruit…” We pray that we would go from 

YT24 to bear lasting fruit.

Joshua and Caleb had a different spirit. Their level of faith was different from other 

spies. They had brought a great report as they were part of the 12 scouts sent by 

Moses into the promised land (Num 13). Unfortunately a negative collective caused a 

whole generation to wander in the desert until a new generation stepped into the 

promises and believed God and His Word. As YWAM, let us connect this to the 

Tripod Message delivered by Loren Cunningham in Nanning, China in 2004 as the 

essential ingredients for regaining our apostolic edge which thrived in our Mission in 

our first four decades, but in the 90’s we began to drift in some places. 

The Tripod Message is foundational to the way Jesus has led us historically as the 

leader of YWAM and is essential to understanding our past and present, but most of 

all our FUTURE as a Multigenerational Mission. 

The Tripod Message is the framework to connect the journey of Moses, Joshua, 

Caleb and Othniel in a Multigenerational Legacy. In Chapter 14, Caleb reminds 

Joshua of the word of the Lord given to him by Moses regarding his inheritance. 

The word of the Lord stood the test of time and now Caleb, 45 years later, as a next 

generation leader is claiming his inheritance in the promised land. 

Tripod Value #1: Freedom in the Spirit 

Caleb’s personal obedience to God’s Lordship over his life carries a blessing over his 

personal life, tribe and their inheritance. The priesthood of every believer is the first 

leg of our Tripod Message: one’s ability to apply our unique God given gift and 

calling to obey or disobey the word of the Lord can qualify or disqualify. Caleb’s 

positive report qualified him to inherit the promised land – he led his tribe into 

receiving their inheritance. Joshua blesses Caleb (Josh 14:13) and commissions him 

to take on his inheritance. 

Tripod Value #2: Spiritual Eldership 

The second leg of the Tripod Message is spiritual eldership by the laying of hands, 

commissioning and passing down the blessing and affirming personal God-given gifts 

and callings. This leads us to Othniel’s contribution to a multigenerational 

generational legacy. Caleb leads by example and begins to take the promised land 

and he makes an invitation to the broader community to respond to a new challenge 

ahead (Josh 15:15) — taking and conquering Kiriath-Sepher. Othniel, a 

multigenerational emerging leader responds and claims his multigenerational 

inheritance. Othniel and Caleb’s daughter, Acash, asked for more inheritance (Josh 

15:19-20).

Caleb embraces his inheritance standing on a multigenerational blessing and the 

laying of hands creates the spiritual authority to take his inheritance just as Caleb 

was blessed by Joshua. Eldership must also be long-suffering and work together in 

releasing young leaders and investing time in relationship building and 

communication instead of just creating rules and regulations to manage broken 

relationships. Loren and Darlene modeled this well as they mentored young leaders 

and also created boundaries when necessary. 

Tripod Value #3: Relationship 

This leads us to the third leg of the tripod message which is right Relationship, which 

takes place in the contexts of our Apostolic Missional Learning Communities which 

we call YWAM bases, campuses, communities, centers, ministries or pioneering 

teams! We must be proactive in keeping right relationships in place, walk closer with 

one another and when having a tough day we must not get offended and just walk 

away. Broken relationships lead to alternative formation of elderships (Prov. 18:11… 

he who separates himself seeks his own desire). This is an area that is constantly 

under attack. 

Othniel responds and is commissioned and recognized. Caleb does not lead by 

himself but engages his tribe by creating the love and affection that is needed for a 

multigenerational legacy. He also creates a framework of “releasing without 

abandoning” emerging leaders by creating the invitation to step into one’s gift and 

calling as Othniel did. As we look to our Multigenerational Legacy: Are we embracing 

the Tripod Message? Are we investing in our relationships? Are we creating circles or 

eldership? Are we allowing Jesus to lead us? 



May we as a YWAM family contend to be a Multigenerational 

Movement with a Multigenerational Legacy, that leads to a 

Multigenerational inheritance in the nations. 

In this season of generational transition may we diligently apply 

the Tripod Message in order to stay aligned to our apostolic calling 

of our Mission. 

God, may the Joshua’s and Caleb’s of this generation release the 

Othniel’s and Acash’s and together take the hardest and darkest 

places.

W E A R E N O T ! 

In Joshua 18, we find the Israelites gathered at Shiloh. This was no ordinary 

assembly – it was a strategic moment where Joshua challenged the people to realize 

that God had already given them all the land in front of their eyes. All they needed to 

do was step out in faith and finish the task of conquering the remaining territories. 

For years, the Israelites journeyed into the Promised Land. Much had happened to 

shape their identity as God's people—the new generation had been circumcised, and 

they had witnessed miraculous victories given by God in every conquest. They had 

learned about God, His ways and how specifically He could lead them. Now, it was 

time to continue and complete the task of conquering all the land God had promised 

to their ancestors. 

As YWAMers, we find ourselves in a similar season. We have witnessed God's 

faithfulness over the past 64 years of our existence. He has led us, taught us about 

His character, and given us our values through many stories and experiences. We 

have seen incredible apostolic release into all the corners of the world through many 

expressions and countless young people going from everywhere to everywhere. 

But what if this is just the beginning?! There are billions of people in the world still 

who have never heard the Gospel. There are thousands of unreached areas of the 

world that have yet to see a full-time missionary presence as a witness to the 

kingdom of God. It is in the middle of this crossroads in our history that God is 

calling us to come before Him, from every stream of our mission, and to listen to His 

voice about the places where we are not. 

Joshua told the people to scout out and map the empty territories. What if each of 

us, as part of the YWAM family, chose an unreached area to focus on over the next 

years? What if each team or base would pick an empty Omega Zone to research and 

bring before the Lord as the next place where they would multiply into?! 

The final frontiers where the Gospel must arrive in the world are in places like 

Yemen, Turkey, Mauritania, Iran, North Korea, Tajikistan, Algeria, Libya, Indonesia, 

Kashmir, Bahrain, Maldives, Iraq, and Cambodia. The most unreached are also 

scattered amongst the most isolated islands and most densely populated cities. 

These locations may not be easy places to reach, and many are hard places to move 

to, but they are packed with amazing young people waiting for the Good News to get 

to them! With boldness, strategy and the Word of the Lord, we can see this next 

phase of our story be about reaching all of them! Will you go scout out which one is 

yours? 



For a bold release of apostolic anointing upon our YWAM family to 

see multiplication taking place in all empty Omega Zones of the 

unreached world. 

Make it personal: Listen to God for an unreached, unengaged 

Omega Zone you could go visit and research even as soon as the 

coming year! 

God, help us arise as Joshua did in this moment to step into the 

calling God has placed on our lives and trust that God will lead us 

to victory.

In Joshua 20, we see that cities of refuge were places to which people accused of 

murder could flee to be protected until the time of their trial. It’s not hard for us to 

see these cities of refuge as God's plan of salvation in Jesus. In his mercy and grace, 

he became our city of refuge. As we recognize our guilt, we flee to Jesus as a 

refuge. But it’s not always easy for a world full of evil, sickness, wars, injustice and 

sin, to find these cities of refuge although people are desperate for it. The Levites 

were to be priests and act as mediators between the Israelites and God. The cities of 

refuge were six of the Levite cities. 

As YWAM we are also called to be like Levites who are called to trust God for their 

provision and are dependent on Him. The Levites also were called to bring people 

into these proverbial cities of refuge, meaning we are called to bring them to Jesus. 

It is God's desire for everyone to be saved (1 Tim 2:3-4) and His call to us to partner 

with Him in that, to mediate and take care of his people, as the Levites did. We are 

not satisfied and content living inside these cities, but we want to see a multitude of 

people coming and take refuge in these cities. 

These towns were strategically chosen so that anyone living in Israel, including 

strangers (Josh 20:9), could flee to them within a day or less. One of the blessings 

we have as YWAM is that we are in so many places in the world. Not so many people 

or organizations have that, but God’s vision of the waves, the call to go to ALL and 

everyone is ours, and we are called to be near and among all people everywhere. 

These cities are for everyone: the young, old, male, female, all tribes, all colors and 

all backgrounds. 

We praise the Lord for the places we are in, but we are desperate to go to where we 

are not, that the cities of refuge will be near to everyone, and we can carry God’s 

love, grace and mercy to all people. We have a call and a promise and we will keep 

holding on to these and trusting God, loving Him. We will continue to journey and 

adventure with Him, obey Him, follow Him, act like fools sometimes, loving His 

people and in all that knowing that the victory is the Lord’s. 

“So the Lord gave Israel all the land he had sworn to give their ancestors… 

Not one of all the Lord’s good promises to Israel failed; everyone was fulfilled”. 

Joshua 21: 43-45 



May we as YWAM continue to renew our call to be Levites that are 

completely dependent on God’s provision in our calling and 

ministry. 

God, we are not content with the places where we are at, but we ask 

for the the most unreached locations, nations, cities, spheres and 

isolated islands. 

God, we commit to continue to trust you in this calling so that all 

your good promises will be fulfilled. 


JOSHUA 21: 45

The events of Chapter 22 took place at the very end of the conquest period. 

Reuben, Gad and half of Manasseh were unique tribes in that they received a land 

inheritance on the east side of the Jordan River unlike the rest of the tribes of Israel. 

Here Joshua blessed them and sent them away to their tents on the east side of the 

Jordan (Josh 22:7-8), with a share of the spoils of their enemies. They settled in 

Gilead and decided to build a large ‘altar of witness’ on their side of the Jordan 

river. 

When the rest of the tribes of Israel saw this altar, they wanted to go to war with 

them. In their zeal for the Lord and His holiness they made an assumption that these 

tribes had turned away from the Lord and were rebelling by building another altar 

(Josh 22:16-20). 

They had good motives for doing what they did, wanting future generations to come 

to know the reason for their inheritance being in a different place from the rest of 

Israel to prevent division in the future (Josh 22:27-28). After listening to their 

reasons why they built this altar, Phinehas and Israel’s leaders were satisfied that the 

two-and-a-half tribes were in unity and committed to God and all of Israel. 

How do we as YWAM consider this section from Joshua in our current season of 

generational transition? We must always be sure, like Joshua did, to publicly bless 

those who are leaving your YWAM community to take a different path of service in 

word and deed as much as possible. 

We must also be on guard to watch out for unrighteous judgment of others. Even in 

YWAM there may be some who may be doing things that seem very different, yet 

they have the same heart and vision as everyone else. At the same time, this does 

not mean we can bypass our YWAM vision and values and do what is ‘right in our 

own eyes’ because that is exactly what happened at the end of Joshua and must 

serve as a strong warning to us in our generational transition. 

We must be careful not to be zealous to come to conclusions without listening to 

both sides. It is always better to seek to reconcile than go to war against our 

brethren. 

Finally, personal direct confrontation in love is better than embarking on speaking 

out against someone without hearing their perspective. There is a reason Jesus 

commanded us to talk one to one first, if we are assuming they are doing or have 

done something wrong (Matt 18:15-20). We must be very careful, as assuming 

people’s motives can destroy friendships, ruin unity and cause unnecessary division. 

A lot of problems would be avoided if we assumed less and communicated more. 



Lord Jesus, would you forgive me for any unrighteous judgment and 

assumptions I have had of others for their motives and decisions 

without first listening to their perspective. 

Help me to walk in humility and wisdom in situations that I am 

unsure about concerning others. 

Above all I want to be prayerful and maintain unity as far as 

possible.

J O S H U A 2 3 - 2 4 : 

O U R S C H E C H E M M O M E N T 

Joshua called the nation of Israel to Schechem as they prepared for another 

generational transition. The generational transition that Joshua led (Josh 1) was a 

time of great expansion and receiving God’s promises. The geographical location of 

Shechem was rich with history for God’s people. 

Leading up to YT24, many felt we were approaching a Schechem Moment. The last 

time we met in Manila was in 1988 and was indeed a historic moment as God led 

us to a landmark statement at the time through the Manila Covenant. This time in 

Manila, God led all those gathered to commit to the Legacy Renewal Covenant. 

Let us consider what Schechem represented for Israel, so that we may consider 

what God might have in store for our YWAM family. 

Shechem was a place of Promise: 

Shechem was where God first spoke to Abraham the promises of God (Gen 12). This 

was also where God gave cities of refuge for the Levites as a promise (Josh 21). Now 

Joshua calls the people of God to remember the promises of God (Josh 24). 

Shechem was a place of Worship: 

Shechem is where Abraham responds to God by building an altar and worshipping 

(Gen 12). Jacob also responds to God with worship at Shechem, as God leads him 

back to his family (Gen 33:18-20). Joshua calls Israel again to Shechem (Josh 24) 

and that altar from Abraham is still there and God’s people again respond in 

worship. 

Shechem was a place of Man’s Sin & God’s Response: 

In Genesis 34, Jacob’s daughter Dinah is tragically raped at Shechem and her 

brothers respond in revenge by murdering the men. In a reversal of this story, in the 

New Testament, Jesus meets the woman at the well at Sychar (which is Shechem) 

and responds to her sin with his grace (John 4) . 

Shechem was a place of Recommitment: 

Joshua renews Israel’s commitment to God at Shechem (Josh 8:30-35) in response 

to their failure of disobedience with the sin of Achan (Josh 7). In Joshua 24, he again 

calls God’s people to come and renew their commitment as they enter another 

generational transition. 


What will our Generational Transition Result in? 

The book of Joshua starts and finishes with two generational transitions. Joshua 1 is 

the transition from Moses to Joshua’s generation which results in an incredible 

expansion and fulfillment of God’s promises. Joshua 24 ends with a recommitment, 

but only a few chapters later Israel has left God’s ways (Judges 2-3) and they spiral 

away from God for generations. 

As YWAM, now is our time to face our first major generational transition. The 

options are clear. This will either be a Joshua 1 time of great expansion and 

fulfillment, and we pray fervently that it would not be a Joshua 24 moment. This is 

why our family gathering is such a critical time as we face our Shechem moment in 

Manilla at YT24. 


Take time to pray through and commit to the revised Manila 

Covenant which was drafted at this meeting. 

Pray that we will remember the promises of God and we would 

respond to these promises as the next generation. 

We would renew our commitment to being a people of prayer and 

worship. 

That we recognize our sin as YWAM, and that God would meet us 

with His grace taking us forward into the next generations. 

That we wholeheartedly RECOMMIT to God in this generational 

transition. That we would rebuke the strategy of the enemy for us to 

be a Judges generation, and wholeheartedly commit to be a Joshua 

Generation to see our Multigenerational Movement thrive into 

many generations. 


THE LEGACY COVENANT 

RENEWAL DOCUMENT 

Manila, 2024 

When 4500+ YWAMers from 110+ countries gathered 

in Manila for YWAM Together in September 2024, we 

affirmed the following Legacy Covenant before the 

Lord: 

We recognize that we are in a new season of multigenerational 

collaboration. This is the first global 

gathering of our missionary movement since Loren 

Cunningham graduated on October 6, 2023 to his 

heavenly home (along with many other beloved 

YWAMers who have departed in the past couple 

years). As we are reminded of the spiritual DNA we 

received from our founders, we commit ourselves 

afresh to our stated purpose, core beliefs and 

foundational values. This is only possible as we walk 

intimately with Jesus, imitating Loren’s lifelong pursuit 

of ever-growing friendship with God. 

We affirm that Jesus continues to be the leader of our 

mission movement. This is the way it has been from 

the beginning and this is the way we will continue to 

serve the Lord and his loving purposes on earth. We 

will look to Jesus and follow his leading. We place our 

confidence in him, not in our structural frameworks. 

For this reason we consecrate ourselves to be 

wholeheartedly devoted to God, walking with him in 

holiness and intentional obedience. 

We affirm the Four Legacy Words that we received 

through Loren Cunningham: 

• the vision of the waves of young people 

going from everywhere to everywhere, 

• the call to disciple nations through the 

spheres of society, 

• the vision of extending the kingdom of God 

through the Christian Magna Carta, and 

• 

the call to End Bible Poverty Now in every 

mother tongue! 

We recognize that each of these Four Legacy Words 

complements one another. Each presents a unique 

perspective of how to complete “the alls and everys” 

of the Great Commission. As we collaborate together, 

they present a holistic and integrated meta-strategy 

for fulfilling God’s redemptive dreams. All of them 

contain myriads of opportunities for creative 

innovation as we go to where we are not, serving the 

least, the last, and the lost. Together we can see the 

greatest missional impact possible. 

God drew our attention to focus on the emerging 

generation. We affirm that it is time for the youngest 

generations to arise in our midst. In our multigenerational 

movement we are always committed to 

championing young people. We celebrate and make a 

way for the youngest in our midst to be and do all 

that God asks of them. 

God highlighted the University of the Nations as we 

recognized and commissioned expanding leadership 

teams. We affirm this ministry that God has raised up 

in our midst to help equip the emerging generation 

for the greatest growth unto missional impact. 

God also led us to focus on Africa. Together we 

remembered the twelve that perished in the tragic 

Arusha incident. We recognize that Africa has a 

strategic role in our future. The population of Africa 

will multiply from just over one billion to nearly four 

billion people on earth between now and the year 

2100. More than half of the people in 25 African 

countries are currently under the age of 25. Already 

one out of every four Christians in the world live in 

Sub-Saharan Africa. These facts should inform our 

missional activities. 

God also spoke to us of the need to see a resurgence 

of prayer and intercession in our midst. As we listen 

to God in the place of prayer he guides us in the way 

we should go. We cry out to God for a burning desire 

to see passionate prayer be normative in our midst as 

our lifestyle both individually and corporately. In our 

YWAM history, prayer and worship have always been 

catalytic to our apostolic initiatives. We affirm afresh 

that prayer is the foundation of our ministry and our 

apostolic expansion. 

Throughout the time together we heard testimonies 

from around the world. Each concluded with the 

phrase, “This is my story!” to which all of those 

gathered responded, saying, “This is our story!” And 

we recognize, as we look to God, that in truth “This is 

his story!” Together we have experienced God. We 

have received a treasured legacy from those who 

have gone before us and we commit to pass it on 

faithfully to future generations. Our desire is to be 

mission true to the call of God. Therefore, as we 

depart Manila, we commit ourselves to walk in unity, 

we embrace the call of God, we determine to do all 

that we can do with the aid of the Holy Spirit to do the 

work of God in the ways of God for the glory of God.
