WHAT IS...
THE ERASMUS+ PROGRAMME?
WHAT IS...
THE EUROPEAN SOLIDARITY CORPS
Erasmus+ is the EU Programme in the fields of education, training, youth and sport
for the period 2021-2027. The Erasmus+ Programme 2021-2027 builds on the
achievements of more than 30 years of European Programmes in the fields of
education, training, youth and sport, and is one of the European Union’s most
visible success stories.
The Erasmus+ Programme is open to people from all ages and backgrounds,
including higher education students, VET learners, adult learners, school
pupils, organisations and institutions. Individuals can take part in many of the
opportunities funded by Erasmus+, although most will have to do so through
an organisation taking part in the programme.
Building on the success of the programme in the period 2014-2020, Erasmus+
strengthens its efforts to increase the opportunities offered to more participants
and a broader range oforganisations, focusing on its qualitative impact and
contributing to a more inclusive and cohesive society where no-one is left behind.
Are you between 18 and 30 and looking for an opportunity to help the wider
community, in Europe and beyond?
You could do this with funding and support from the European Solidarity Corps,
which helps young people take part in projects that benefit communities, either
abroad or in their own country.
These projects offer an inspiring and empowering experience, as well as the chance
to bring change while developing your skills and competences.
These can be in a wide range of fields – education and training, citizenship and
democratic participation, environment and natural protection, migration, culture,
humanitarian aid, and many others.

THE ERASMUS
STUDENT NETWORK
WHAT IS ESN?
The Erasmus Student Network (ESN) is a non-profit international student
organisation founded in 1989 to develop and promote student exchange
under the motto “students helping students”.
THE CAUSES OF ESN
Culture
Language, religion, food, art, beliefs and values are at the core of who we are. ESN
works towards the promotion of intercultural understanding through activities
such as international dinners and language tandems.
Currently ESN is the biggest student association in Europe, working with:
+800 higher education institutions
46 countries
+34.000 young volunteers (active members and buddies)
Operating on three levels: local, national and international, ESN aims towards
a more flexible and mobile education environment, the enhancement of the
student exchange and providing a multicultural experience to those unable
to have a period abroad (“internationalisation at home”) with the help of its
members - most of which are former exchange students themselves.
Education and Youth
ESN strives for better mobility programms, guaranteeing that young people are
given a voice in this process. Activities such as Erasmus in Schools, which brings local
students and international students together, helps share their experiences.
Skills and Employability
During their mobility exchange and through volunteering, students acquire
valuable skills for their future. ESN aims to increase the recognition of these skills
among potential employers and Higher Education Institutions.
ESN aims for a motivated and open-minded young society ready to make
a change in Europe’s future. Therefore, every action contributes to the
development of the network, as well as its volunteers.
Our Social Media
Environmental Sustainability
International mobility programs have a great impact on the environment. To raise
awareness and educate international students about this issue, ESN organises
vegan workshops, beach cleanings and other activities.

Health and Well-being
Living abroad is an opportunity to maintain or develop healthier habits. Promoting
activities such as sports days and healthy food workshops are some of the ways in
which ESN works towards raising awareness to this topic
Social Inclusion
ESN strives to transform students into more active citizens through activities like
volunteering with the local community.

HOW TO SURVIVE
IN PORTUGAL
HEALTHCARE
ACCOMMODATION
Should you ever need to go to the hospital or
to a healthcare centre, this is what you need
to know:
For Citizens from EU member states:
• Bring your European Health Insurance
Card (EHIC).
For Citizens from other countries:
• If staying for less than 3 months, you should get health insurance
or benefits;
• After living 3 months in Portugal, you can apply for the National
Health Service Card at any local healthcare centre or Loja do Cidadão.
Dental treatment is usually not under the Portuguese public health
programme.
Your receiving Higher Education Institution might have their own
healthcare services, so make sure to check their website, as these
services are often less expensive for students.
There is at least one pharmacy open 24/7 in your city. You can quickly
check on the official website:
https://www.farmaciasdeservico.net/
EMERGENCY NUMBERS
112 - emergency services/ambulances
808 24 24 24 - health hotline
Every Portuguese university has official student
residences/dormitories for which you can apply as
a student and live university life along with many
other students. You can also look for a room in a
house of your choosing but try to get someone
trustworthy to help you find a good and safe place
to stay.
Bills and rent costs may vary depending on the region.
TIP #1
ADDITIONAL TIPS ON OFF-CAMPUS HOUSING
Landlords might not speak fluent English. Try
asking your ESN buddy for help.
• Check the local newspapers or accommodation offers in your university or
ESN section (it may have a deal for Erasmus students), websites and/or social
media (i.e. Facebook groups) in house renting;
• It can be hard to find a place with a formal contract that provides a legal
agreement; check if the bills for water, electricity etc. are included in the
renting price;
• Be aware of the house policy towards late hour noise, pets and daily task
agreements;
• Do not rent solely based off photos on the house. Always check the place
out in person. If you cannot do it yourself, ask your buddy for help.

FINANCE AND POSTAL SERVICES
Portugal uses the Euro (€), so if you come from an EU
member state, you will not have any problems with
currency. If not, you can easily convert your currency
at any airport or banking agency.
You can easily open a bank account as a student
since you can do it for free! With a Portuguese bank
account, you can pay your bills, top up your
phone and withdraw cash from an ATM without having to pay any extra fees.
Portugal has its own postal service called CTT. There are
several shops in every city so you can quickly drop off your
mail at the nearest one.
If you wish to send a bigger parcel, you can send them
through shipping companies like Eurosender!
LEARNING PORTUGUESE AND
GETTING AROUND
Did you know that Portuguese is the 6th most spoken
language in the world?
Taking part in a mobility programme also means learning a new language or at
least the basics. If you speak a Romance language, learning Portuguese should be
a breeze! If not, do not worry - Portuguese might seem intimidating at first, but it
is all a matter of practice.
Check your receiving Higher Education Institutions and their languages
departments, as most offer inexpensive (or free) Portuguese courses for
international students.
If you want a more relaxed way of practising Portuguese while engaging in
intercultural conversation, try signing up for group sessions at SPEAK!
Getting around
As a young person/student, public transportation offers special discounts when
you bring your ID or student card!
To get around in your city and the country, you should know that:
• You can buy a monthly bus or train pass with a student/youth discount;
• You can also buy a simple bus pass and top it up as needed;
• Hitchhiking is not common in Portugal; if you want to try, please be cautious
and aware that most drivers are not used to giving strangers rides.

Nowadays I can say that Braga is my second home, a beautiful city, full
of history, rain, sunsets and flowers. Thanks to the university, the rest of
the Erasmus students, the ESN and the Portuguese themselves, I have
managed to feel like at home. What I would highlight most about this
experience is the learning. Learning in all its areas.
I have learned both Portuguese culture and many others due to the
cultural diversity provided by the Erasmus programme. I have met
incredible people who inspire me every day, and finally I can say that I have
learned a lot about myself, I have exposed myself to new and challenging
situations that have made me grow a lot on a personal level.

My decision to go on Erasmus was mainly because I wanted to start a new
life, and I literally did. I never been in Portugal before so I admit it was a bit
scary when I was leaving because I literally didn’t know where I’m going.
I spent one year here for Erasmus exchange and one semester for
internship and I must say that it was the happiest, craziest and most
learning experience of my life.
Not only did I learned a lot about Portugal, other countries but also about
myself. Erasmus gave me friendships that will last for a lifetime. Porto is
a city where everyone will find their path in and the people here are so
warm and open that it’s impossible to not feel at home. I fell in love with
the city and I felt so at home here that I decided to permanently move
here.
The city where I spent my craziest months of my life literally became my
new home. Besides the university life there are also many activities with
ESN which I attended. Even when I felt like it’s not the activity for me, I
still went there and had the best time. If you have a possibility to come
here for your exchange or internship you should do it, don’t even hesitate
about that.

I was an Erasmus student in Vila Real/UTAD in Sports Science. I enjoyed
every bit of it. I enjoyed sharing a house with people scattered from all
around the globe and finding out that we are not as different as I thought
we were. I enjoyed spending my evenings cooking with my greek, spanish,
romanian and brasilian flat mates and talking about how was our day
while the others were cooking.
Where I learned a lot from them and for that I will be forever grateful for
them. The nights were when everyone was gathering at the Metro, all
world was in the same place at the same time, just socializing with each
other, telling how is our life in our country, cultural differences, talking
about food and drinks, about shows, trips, movies and music, about
university. I didn’t know that Danza Kuduro had a dance until I learned
it in a restaurant my first week in the heart of Vila Real, and a year after I
still dance it together with the one from the song Limbo by Daddy Yanke
every time I hear the songs.

COVADONGA LÓPEZ: Hi there! My name is Covadonga López and I come
from Asturias, a region in Northern Spain. My experience as an international
student in Aveiro is being amazing! I wanted to move again and discovering
another country, so my scholarship was a very good option to me in order to
continue improving my career and also living new moments and experiences
(personally, I love languages and cultures!). In fact, I am studying Portuguese
as a foreign language too! I’m sure that I made a good choice by coming to
UA because all friends, Portuguese and foreign students, are very nice. Being
out has told me that the best part is joining groups of people who wanna
share epic moments; at the same time, I can understand better the world
and I’ve enjoyed finding other traditions. For sure, I would recommend doing
an Erasmus because it’s one of the most exciting experiences, which you’ll
remember all your life! In my opinion, if you’re an Erasmus you share a lot of
moments with different people and you get more open-minded by learning a
lot of things from your new friends. If I were you, I’d it. Face your initial fears
and don’t hesitate! Going far from home will help you to see life in a different
light. Don’t regret years after: choose a country you’re interested in and take
your opportunity!

My Erasmus in Castelo Branco was the best experience of my life.
Starting with the city that it was so peaceful, beautiful and clean, with
fantastic people that helped me when I needed (including kind strangers
who even if they didn’t know English when I was asking for help on the
street, they did their best to understand me and help) to the students that
were there for us when we needed, I can only say words of praise.
I made great friends, learned so many new things and made such beautiful
memories that I will cherish for the rest of my life. Everyone there made
me feel at home, more than I would have expected.
All the students there were like our “little” (but not so small) family where
we could always go to when we needed. At the same time I loved how the
ESN volunteers tried to make interesting activities for us to participate in
so we could bond easier with one another, so I am very grateful for them. I
loved the experience so much that I decided to try it again, so I am coming
back in August when I can’t wait to make even more memories and meet
and make new friends.

“Modern languages, Italy
Before arriving in Coimbra, I couldn’t imagine that my experience would be so
intense and that every moment would be unforgettable. As soon as I arrived,
that fear and uncertainty disappeared because I was fortunate enough to
meet so many people who didn’t make me feel alone, people from different
parts of the world, who made my Erasmus experience wonderful.
Coimbra offered me so many opportunities that helped me grow and see
the world with different eyes; the University gave me many satisfactions
and allowed me to grow professionally, but at the same time, it allowed me
to live an academic life that I had never seen before, with all its traditions.
Participating in the Latada was an experience I would repeat, a moment to
share with the people I loved most in this city, but I also had the opportunity
to learn about other traditions such as the tunas, the praxe, the traje
académico, and even more.
In this city, you never get tired, throughout the week there is always a
different party ready to leave a little memory, and thanks to ESN Coimbra,
activities are organized that make this experience even cooler. Coimbra, a
cidade dos amores, will always remain in my heart.”

“Logistics Systems, Poland
The experience of going on the ERASMUS+ program to the town of Covilha
in Portugal was unforgettable and full of extraordinary experiences. Covilha,
nestled at the foothills of Serra da Estrela, Portugal’s highest continental
peak, became our home during our stay.
The location of Covilha, with its picturesque hills, made daily walks
a challenge, but over time, we got used to the charming terrain. The
Universidade da Beira Interior played a key role in the life of the town and
our stay. The Erasmus+ program not only gave us the chance to acquire new
academic knowledge but also to delve into cultural diversity. During our stay,
we had the opportunity to learn about the customs, traditions, and languages
of other nations, which was incredibly valuable and inspiring. It’s impossible
not to mention the numerous trips and excursions that were an integral part
of our stay.
The university, in collaboration with the ESN, also organized many attractive
events and integration parties, such as Speed Meeting, city tours, or movie
nights. The whole experience was not only educational but also very
emotional. The friendships formed there will stay with us forever, and
the memories associated with this unique period in our lives will remain
unforgettable.

“Cinema, Turkey
My name is Cengizhan, and I’m a Turkish Erasmus student that had the
amazing opportunity to do their mobility program in Tomar.
Everytime I know someone who will be doing Erasmus, I recommend
this city, since it has a comfortable, beautiful and pleasant environment,
where you can focus on your work while also having fun! In terms of
schooling, I found the teachers very helpful and respectful towards every
international student, always available to clarify any doubts we may have.
When it comes to friendships, ESN Tomar had a really fun environment
that allowed me to make incredible friendships during the 6 months I
experienced this one-time opportunity. I believe that every Erasmus will
tell you that their main advice is for you to enjoy and explore as much as
you can, taking in every moment. Don’t be afraid to talk and to develop
new bounds, but especially don’t be afraid to make the most of your
experience! I hope you enjoy the templars city as much as I did, and you
might even find me sometime around the city, since I’m pretty sure I’ll
come back to visit.

I did an Erasmus in Lisbon last semester and it was a life changing experience!
There are lots of totally different places to discover. For example, if you want
somewhere quiet, the Estufa Fria garden is the best place, but there are also
lots of parks. If you prefer parties, the Bairro Alto is perfect, and if you just
want to walk in a beautiful place, Alfama district is ideal. As far as transports
in the city, when you’re a student it’s really cool and really cheap. You can get
around Lisbon and surrounding areas with your transport card and leave the
city easily.
When I first arrived in Lisbon, in September, I was very bad at English and
super stressed about not being able to speak and understand people, but
I quickly learned that most of Portuguese people are really friendly, use a
simple English and there are lots of foreigners.
If I can give you some advice, just be confident and there is always a tool to
communicate with people! Lisbon is truly an amazing city, I loved my Erasmus
in Lisbon because it’s so easy to travel within Portugal and to other countries.
Indeed, it’s a cheap departure airport, but the same is true for trains and
buses. And that’s why, just during the first semester, I had the opportunity to
go to Madeira, a beautiful Portuguese island, and to Porto, another famous
city in Portugal. Lisboa has been home to unforgettable memories and I’m
excited to see where life takes me next!
