A Note From Rabbi Niles
Dear friends,
This year, October is the month of major Jewish holidays. It also marks the one-year anniversary,
on October 7, of the massacre of innocent Israeli civilians and soldiers by Hamas terrorists—as well
as the taking of Israeli hostages and an eruption of antisemitism around the world. I strongly
encourage each of you to attend, not only the various High Holy Day services, but also the evening
of Monday, October 7th at 7 pm, when Gordon and I will be leading a Candlelight Memorial for
all the victims of terrorism and antisemitism. There is so much pain in Israel and around the globe—
take this opportunity to show up for the Jewish people.
I also want to share a couple of thoughts about the Days of Awe themselves.
Hayom harat olam - “This is the day of the world’s birth.” Rosh Hashanah may be the beginning of
the Days of Awe, an intense 10-day period of soul-searching, self-examination, and forgiveness,
but it is also a day of celebration. This line from the Rosh Hashanah liturgy captures the joy and
import of this sacred time. May your New Year—and, symbolically speaking, the world’s—be sweet,
healthy and happy!
Yom Kippur can sometimes seem ambiguous. Jews traditionally wear white on this sacred day, a
symbol of both a wedding garment and a burial shroud. We pray for God to be with us, to show us
grace and forgiveness, but we also recognize—through prayer, ritual and fasting—that we've fallen
short of our moral goals yet again, that our best intentions and ideals have “died” in the course of
another year. That is what the Kol Nidre prayer captures: the inevitably of human failing. And yet. .
.Yom Kippur, happily, renews us. It promises us another year to strive for self-improvement, both
moral and spiritual.
May these important communal holidays, in the New Jewish Year 5785, be transformative for Jews
in Napa Valley and everywhere. And may peace finally reign throughout the world, speedily and in
our own time!
Shanah Tovah, Niles
President’s Message
Greetings. I’m unsure what’s happening in your house, but our CBS Ritual
Committee has been organizing and planning for the HHDs for months.
Just imagine your extended family is coming to celebrate. Multiply that
by 20 and you can imagine the challenge we face. We are so fortunate to
have numerous volunteers - and there is still time to be involved. Just
contact Marah, our Synagogue Director.
There is a tradition for Jews to wear white clothing during Yom Kippur to
purify ourselves ethically & morally and we wear white to symbolize that
aspiration. NOTE: This is not required!
CBS will be purifying/cleaning ‘our house’ - we have arranged for carpet
cleaning, window washing, and volunteers to polish the silverware – just
to name a few. And you will be pleased to know that we just received new
white tablecloths.
If you and your family have not attended HHD services in the past, I
encourage you to come this year. Attendance is included in membership,
but you must register online. This is the time that we should stand tall
and strong in light of adversity. This is the time to strengthen our ties to
our Jewish heritage.
