Letter from the President
I am both pleased and somewhat moved to introduce this first Social Balance Sheet of FERCAM Echo Labs, a
non-profit Social Enterprise, which gives us the opportunity to transparently share, with clear figures, the
motivations behind our inception, the projects we are undertaking, and our commitment to rethink the
future in terms of sustainable growth, balancing environmental health, social equity, and economic
efficiency.
FERCAM Echo Labs was founded in December 2021 from the desire to create an area within the FERCAM
Rome Branch where both direct and indirect personnel could spend moments of sharing and break. From
this gesture of attention to the enterprise that I have the honour to preside over, the step was short.
In just this first year, FERCAM Echo Labs has been able to develop and clearly define itself: it is based on an
important circular economy project involving the upcycling of discarded wooden pallets; promotes the
integration and inclusion of vulnerable categories; offers research and reflection opportunities to students of
all ages through workshops and volunteer activities, but above all, proposes an original and virtuous
management and organizational model, founded on the sharing of skills, knowledge, resources, and passion.
Our project has found its best expression and most original characteristic in the ability to network with both
profit and non-profit organizations, which more than anything else, gains consensus and attracts the interest
of companies that have found in us a concrete ally in the realization of their CSR programs. In this report, you
will find the testimony of some of these organizations and individuals with whom we are sharing initiatives
and projects with a common vision: to offer people and places opportunities for growth and development,
placing the well-being of people and careful and prudent resource management at the center of our action.
It is important for me to conclude by emphasizing that none of this would have been possible without the
vision of FERCAM SpA, with whom we share the strategy, commitment, and resources to fuel an industrial
symbiosis process that is circular beyond all expectations: together, we manage to give new life and value to
materials at risk of waste, which "return home" in a new form to make the places where colleagues build the
company's history every day more beautiful and functional!
Happy reading!
Methodology Adopted for the Drafting of the Social Balance Sheet
The Social Balance Sheet is the outcome of a process by which the organization accounts for its choices,
activities, results, and resource use, enabling various stakeholders to know and make an informed
assessment of how it interprets and realizes its social mission.
The objective of the social balance sheet is to measure and communicate the sense and value of the work
carried out to reinforce dialogue and trust with different stakeholders.
Reporting Standards
The Social Balance Sheet is prepared according to the guidelines for the drafting of the social balance sheet
of third sector entities issued by the Ministry of Labour and Social Policies on July 4, 2019.
The reporting period is the year 2022 (from January 1 to December 31), which coincides with the financial
year and represents the first year of activity for FERCAM Echo Labs.
The document, therefore, represents the zero drafting of the Social Balance Sheet and complies with the
requests of the Guidelines, and it is specified that in future editions, the mapping of risks and actions taken
to mitigate potential negative impacts must be integrated.
It is specified that information related to the meetings of the entities responsible for managing and
approving the balance sheet (number of participants, main issues addressed, and decisions taken during the
meetings) are included in the "Structure, governance, and administration" section.
The document conforms to the principles of social balance sheet drafting indicated in the Guidelines:
relevance, completeness, transparency, neutrality, period competency, comparability, clarity, truthfulness
and verifiability, reliability, and autonomy of third parties.
Other Information on the Reporting and Methodology Process
The first Social Balance Sheet of FERCAM Echo Labs was developed by the Working Group formed by Bettina
Baumgartner, Dino Menichetti, Claudia Coscarella, Lorena Biasi, and Andrea Boninsegna with the support of
Refe – Sustainable Development Strategies, according to the Rendersi conto per rendere conto® method.
The Refe method supports rigorous and credible reporting and produces lasting changes both on the
strategic-management dimension and on the communicative and participative one.
The Rendersi conto per rendere conto® activates an internal analysis aimed at explicating the vision,
strategic objectives, and operation of the organization, with a punctual verification of interventions and
actions carried out, resources allocated, and results and effects obtained. The reporting – the outcome of
realizing – feeds processes and tools of reporting and communication.
The Social Balance Sheet was approved by the Board of Directors and is available on the website
Operational territorial areas: The entire Italian territory
History
FERCAM Echo Labs was founded on December 22, 2021, at the initiative of FERCAM, stemming from a
simple need at the FERCAM Rome headquarters: to create, in an environmentally friendly manner, an area
available to direct collaborators, warehouse staff, and drivers, where they could take a regenerating break.
To realize this project, FERCAM Fine Art technicians recovered two obsolete mobile crates that were
transformed into an innovative and welcoming space. From this single small drop, larger waves were
generated. From this first initiative, the scope of action expanded. From this, it was understood that it is
possible to generate a significant and positive impact on people and the environment, leaving a footprint to
be proud of.
Transportation represents a strategic sector of the European Union's economy, which directly affects the
daily lives of citizens. It is a sector capable of generating added value and developing new services for people
and businesses, as well as being functional to the competitiveness of territories and the production system.
In addition to offering a significant contribution to the European economy, transportation employs about 10
million people, half of whom are employed in the freight transport and logistics sector. In Italy, about 85.000
companies provide freight transport and logistics services and employ 1.2 million workers.
The sector is at the centre of a transition process to ensure greater environmental sustainability, in addition
to the economic and employment impacts. At the European level, in fact, transportation causes about 25%
of CO 2 emissions, and freight transport "pollutes" more than passenger transport, accounting for 36% of the
sector's emissions.
Among the environmental impacts of the logistics sector, there is waste generation. Specifically, packaging is
among the main products using virgin materials: 40% of plastic and 50% of paper used in the EU are, in fact,
intended for packaging. If no action is taken, by 2030 the EU will register a further 19% increase in packaging
waste and, for plastic packaging waste, even 46%. Through specific regulations and policies, the EU aims to
reduce, by 2040, packaging waste per capita per Member State by 15% compared to 2018 through reuse
and recycling.
In Italy, in 2021, 3.394.066 tonnes of packaging were used, of which 16.40.106 new pallets and 934.384
pallets re-entered. In 2021, the tonnes of regenerated and re-entered packaging amounted to 908.066,
equivalent to over 70 million pallets.
FERCAM, aware of the environmental impact of the sector in which it operates, constantly monitors the
production and management of waste resulting from activities:
• Warehouse: paper and cardboard packaging, plastic, wood, and mixed
• Offices: paper, plastic, residue, electrical and electronic equipment, toners, and neon
• Workshop (to a limited extent): iron and steel, oil filters, lead battery, and end-of-life tires.
The waste produced is mainly related to warehouse activities, and the data related to the production 2019-
2021, which overall decreased by 2% , are presented below.
2019 2020 2021
Regarding packaging, special attention must be given to wood. Wood is the most used material for pallets -
90% of which are made of wood, while the rest are made of plastic, metal, or cardboard - and represents a
key element of the global supply chain, used in 80% of world trade.
Pallets are mostly made of virgin solid wood, with an impact also on deforestation. In the absence of a
dedicated supply chain, disposable packaging can potentially become waste, and FERCAM Echo Labs acts to
prevent this from happening, giving them new life.
8

Wood is a material to be used consciously and carefully, which can be recycled, adapted, reused, or
creatively recovered. In particular, upcycling is the process of transforming materials otherwise at risk of
waste into products that acquire new functions and uses , with the aim of prolonging their life cycle. This
process is at the heart of the FERCAM Echo Labs project, which aims to give new life to no longer used
goods, preventing the production of waste and generating social, economic, and environmental value.
9

"FERCAM Echo Labs gives a
second life to materials at risk
of waste, offers an opportunity
for social redemption to the
most fragile categories, returns
value to the territory and
communities.
But there are also concrete
economic benefits: in the supply
chain, thousands of tonnes of
wood from pallets and not only
are used every day. The disposal
cost of this waste material is
anything but negligible. FERCAM
Echo Labs offers a solution,
activating real collaboration in
the supply chain in a circular
economy perspective"
The industrial symbiosis between FERCAM and FERCAM Echo Labs
FERCAM was founded in 1949 in Bolzano as a freight transport company by railway and truck. In 1963,
following the acquisition by the haulier Eduard Baumgartner, the company expanded to become a unique
multi-specialized operator, while remaining a family-owned business.
• FERCAM Special Services: FERCAM offers a range of highly specialized services for the transportation of
goods for trade fairs (FERCAM Fairs & Events) and delicate goods such as artworks (FERCAM Fine Art). The
team also deals with exceptional overland and overseas transports and high-quality corporate and private
relocations.
FERCAM's Commitment to a Sustainable Future
FERCAM recognizes sustainability as an important factor for its
development, and the FERCAM 2025 Strategy integrates the UN
2030 Agenda and the ESG vision into corporate choices and
policies, promoting an innovative and sustainable business
model. Regarding the environmental dimension, with the
Emission Free project, FERCAM intends to effectively reduce
harmful emissions from logistics and transport activities through
technological innovation.
The project – which in 2021 alone allowed to avoid over 33,000
tons of CO 2 – develops along three main lines of action:
• Review of the circulating vehicle fleet,
•. Intelligent and rational use of resources,
• Switch to ecological tractions and fuels.
FERCAM Echo Labs is an integral part of this strategy and intends
to impact waste reduction, promoting the transition from a linear
PARTNER
FERCAM
Founder
FERCAM, a company founded in 1949, is one of the main European logistics
operators and has always been committed to environmental protection and
promoting the well-being of people.
Linaria
The association, born in Rome in 2011, promotes a reflection on diversity –
botanical, social, and cultural – with projects, installations, events, and books.
The goal is to promote dialogue and actions of active citizenship. Together we
promote urban regeneration paths, to bring nature back to the city. We work
preferring waste material from the logistics supply chain and solutions capable
of stimulating respect for the environment and the spread of nature, as in the
case of FERCAM Echo Park, a true Biodiversity Station.
Laboratorio Linfa
It is a sustainable design laboratory that, through the recovery of scrap wood,
gives life to unique works, custom eco-friendly installations, and furnishings.
Together we recover scrap wood and transform it into unique works, ecofriendly
installations, and furnishings for requalifying work and community
environments and spreading principles and good practices of upcycling and,
more generally, reuse of materials.
MediHospes
It is a cooperative with over 1,500 employees, providing almost 2 million hours
of hospitality per year in Italy, assistance and care to over 7,500 fragile people
or those living in health and humanitarian emergency conditions. Together we
carry out training and professional requalification interventions, through
workshops and internships for insertion and reintegration into the labor market,
particularly aimed at migrants, to offer skills that facilitate access to the world of
work and income opportunities.
UPCYCLING
FERCAM Echo Park
A new relaxation area for the well-being of the staff and drivers on break
The new break area was created at the FERCAM Rome location and offers a
relaxing and comfortable space where to have lunch and take a coffee
break.
The intact wooden planks from the pallets were transformed into furniture
such as chairs, tables, and planters. Two obsolete mobile crates were
modified and repainted to create doors and windows.
In the area, bins for separate waste collection and vending machines for
healthy, organic, kilometer-zero, or artisanal products were placed. A
plastic compactor machine was installed to insert PET bottles, which will
then be recycled. The classic coffee cups were replaced by 100% recyclable
material containers, reducing CO 2 emissions by 40% for the product's life
cycle.
Even the coffee grounds are recycled to an external company that
produces organic compost, used as fertilizer for the plants present in the
branch's biodiversity stations.
Prologis Park Romentino (NO)
Offer new ways of use and encouraging opportunities for socialization
Park Life
PARKlife is a project promoted by Prologis - a global leader in the real estate sector – with the aim of
transforming logistic parks into innovative workspaces and placing the well-being of people and the creation
of bonds at the centre. Thanks to PARKlife, it is possible to think of the logistic park more and more as a
place for socializing, where communities and nature can develop in harmony. Through the offer of a wide
range of services and infrastructures - such as creative areas for leisure time, natural spaces, and outdoor
cafes - it is possible to create welcoming and comfortable spaces.
Within the PARKlife project developed by Prologis, eco-sustainable
furniture for a relaxation area intended for workers and the community of
the Prologis Park logistics center in Romentino (NO) was created. The
furniture, including tables, benches, and relaxation seats, was made using
pallets and other disposable packaging materials from logistics activities,
in a circular economy perspective. In the production of the furnishings, a
social carpentry workshop in Rome was involved, which offers migrants,
asylum seekers, unemployed Italians, or economically vulnerable
individuals opportunities for permanent and continuous learning through
informal and free courses.
“"When we launched PARKlife in 2019,
a project for the requalification of our
logistics properties, it came natural to
collaborate more closely considering
also the similarities between Prologis
and FERCAM Echo Labs' philosophy.
With Dino Menichetti and his team,
there is a natural affinity and
convergence of intentions: we speak
the same language. I believe we are
only at the beginning of our
collaboration.
In an era where everything has to be
measured in terms of performance and
economic return, it is not difficult to
realize that working in beautiful and
human-sized environments, in addition
to being everyone's desire, is also a
tool to increase well-being, reduce
stress and monotony."
Sustainable Setup for the Green Logistics Expo of Padova
Create an arrangement with reclaimed materials to promote reuse, upcycling, and, more
generally, environmental sustainability through modular and reusable eco -design furnishing.
During the Green Logistics Expo in Padova, sustainable exhibition areas and
green islands made up of aromatic plants, herbs, and flowers were created.
After the fair, these areas were transferred to dedicated biodiversity areas in
various branches of FERCAM.
In particular, the furniture for the exhibition stands was made with reused
materials such as cardboard and wood recovered from disposable pallets.
"For many years the company has been oriented towards sustainability. We were
about to start the restyling of the Forlì warehouse, we thought of involving them
and the proposal of FERCAM Echo Labs immediately struck us. In the relaxation
area, some original furnishings were inserted, made without glue, nor ch emical
products and with wood and material at risk of waste directly supplied by
Electrolux: a sofa, a shelf-table along the three walls of the room, a panel with
mirror, various stools, a covering of the windows with the company logo and a QR
code with the description of FERCAM Echo Labs and their principles. I do not
believe this project will remain an isolated case and we are thinking of other
collaborations."
RESEARCH
Collaboration with Alessandra Cozzolino, associate professor of Supply Chain Management at the
Department of Management of Sapienza University of Rome
To make known the FERCAM Echo Labs model and promote its replicability and scalability
Collaboration within the Supply Chain Management course has led to moments of discussion
between company representatives and students and to the production of an academic paper by
Professor Alessandra Cozzolino, titled "Toward a Circular Supply Chain: The Case of Fercam Echo
Labs".
Continue the activity of disseminating the circular economy model and develop the collaboration
with the urban regeneration laboratory on specific projects, such as the welcome box for new
28

"The project immediately excited me because it intertwines logistics of packaging
and logistics innovation, recovery and upcycling of material: it takes material that
can no longer be used and therefore should be disposed of, with the related costs,
and transforms it into a value for the company, for the supply chain, for the
territory. However, this result requires collaboration in a supply chain perspective,
and this is exactly what FERCAM Echo Labs does. This project is a reference in
terms of supply chain collaboration and how multiple subjects working in a
complementary way can realize initiatives of broad sustainability. There is a lot of
talk about circular economy and logistics collaboration and it is therefore
interesting for the academic world to b e able to observe how this concept is
concretely realized within the supply chain. A collaboration of this kind leads to
rethink packaging with the goal not only of reducing it (where possible) or making
it less impactful in the disposal phase, but also more easily reusable, recyclable,
and transformable. Packaging is a lever of marketing, and, at the same time, its
logistic value is increasingly crucial."
Alessandra Cozzolino,
Associate Professor in Business Economics at the Department of Management of Sapienza University of
Rome and national co-coordinator of the Thematic Group "Operations & Supply Chain" of the Italian Society
of Management.
29

"The experience of collaboration with FERCAM Echo Labs was an important piece in
our research to root advanced digital design techniques related to numerically
controlled productions with local material supply chains, in the perspective of
building a new hybridization between waste management and material handling
centres and digital design and fabrication laboratories like Fab Labs.
Our Models and Prototypes Laboratory thus became a centre of "digital upcycling"
where materials, with their stories, patina s, texts, are reworked with digital
processes and in this sense re-signified, enacting processes today defined as
frugal innovation. The prototypes of furniture produced with FERCAM materials are
not simple experiments, they are true structures, brought an d tested in various
events, produced with real materials. It is a real test bed, and perhaps that has the
combined charm of design abstraction with the small things we come into contact,
even tactile, every day. It is from this enthusiasm, touched with han d by the people
met in the various events where we presented the works, that we have recovered,
to our students and ourselves, one of the purest emotions of being architects
today".
EDUCATION
FERCAM Echo School Projects
To create different learning environments to transform the school into an inclusive and
welcoming attraction centre, allowing students to become increasingly protagonists of their
education
In 2022, a first project was realized with the Amaldi high school in Tor
Bella Monaca, which included two phases:
• clean-up activity with teachers, students, and volunteers,
• co-design of the open space.
Given the wide outdoor environments not fully usable due to lack of
maintenance and shortage of equipment suitable for hosting educational
or recreational activities, FERCAM Echo Labs started a requalification
process within the Amaldi High School of Tor Bella Monaca – an institute
applying the Dada Model (Education for Learning Environments) – one of
the largest in the city with almost 2,000 enrolled students. Thanks to the
project, students have the opportunity to spend their extra-curricular time
and conduct lessons outdoors in the requalified green spaces.
Furthermore, a volunteering day was organized, during which the spaces
were cleared of weeds and uncontrolled vegetation, to prepare for the
subsequent design process aimed at making improvements that produce
a greater functional correspondence between educational activity and
outdoor spaces.
The second phase of the project involves the requalification of the open space through the installation of
furniture made of recycled wood and the installation of biodiversity stations, in collaboration with the non -
profit association Linaria. The project will resume in May 2023 with the execution of 2 practical workshops
involving the students.
31

"The project stems from the desire to requalify the outdoor spaces and make them a place lived by
students and teachers for outdoor lessons, recreational moments, and also to bring to completion a
stage of the green path that the school has started in recent years (...). Covid has allowed the school
that pause for reflection to consider outdoor spaces not as non-places but as full-fledged learning
environments; naturally, they must be organized like any other learning place made of people but
also of well-kept and beautiful spaces. The concept of beauty guides us (...), we are not in a nonplace,
but in a territory that has fully lived the ancient history (...), we have carried out various
projects just to give sense to what sense has, but which is often forgotten (...). It is important to
conceive the school as a participated school: one must not be passive subjects with respect to the
school but give their own contribution."
Maria Rosaria Autiero
Headteacher of the I.I.S. "Edoardo Amaldi" of Rome
"Thanks to this project, a really important message passes about the school as a
place of aggregation, experimentation, and multidisciplinary learning. We involved
in all phases of design and construction a group of students and teachers with the
typical participatory methods, proper to all Linaria's work, in order to create on one
hand, in people who live the school daily, a strong sense of ownership and care, on
the other, a place of study and research on biodiversity and a self -construction
space thanks to the exclusive use of recycled materials."
Institutional Communication
In 2022, FERCAM Echo Labs presented its activities through a multi-channel communication strategy. The
official website was launched through which the company mission and action strategy were presented. The
company gained visibility in the media through presence on some newspapers, where the FERCAM Echo
Labs project was presented. This initial phase was characterized by a more institutional approach, aimed at
presenting the project and its purposes in detail.
Subsequently, the communication strategy evolved, focusing on the relationship with the public through
dedicated social channels. LinkedIn adopted an institutional communication aimed at companies and
partners, while Instagram communicated to a younger audience, with a proposal of emotional photos and
videos. Facebook was mainly used for reposting content from Instagram and LinkedIn, while Twitter tested
live-tweeting activity during events. In the following months, it was decided to direct the communicatio n
towards a warmer tone of voice, with the aim of engaging the public on the progress of the FERCAM Echo
Labs project, its collaborators, and its partners.
35

Future perspectives
FERCAM Echo Labs - although still in the start-up phase - is the protagonist of a rapid and dynamic growth.
Thanks to the system action it promotes with its partners, numerous projects are being developed, which on
one hand confirm the timeliness and centrality of the mission of FERCAM Echo Labs and on the other hand
outline new perspectives, which will allow to increasingly expand the scope of action.
Among the projects starting:
• Consolidate and develop the collaboration with FERCAM to make the supply chain more sustainable.
• Develop the relationship with Local Entities, Institutions, and Associations for the territory to start common
urban requalification projects aimed at improving the quality of life of citizens.
