This September issue comes out in
time for the Defender Burghley Horse
Trials Stallion Parade which takes
place in between the two age classes
of the Burghley Young Event Horse
Finals on Friday 6th September, so
hopefully we will see some of
you there.
We are thrilled to bring the report from
the fi rst leg of the British Breeding
Futurity Evaluations that took place
in late July and early August. It was
wonderful to catch up with some of our
regular breeders as well as welcoming
some new breeders to the futurity. The
fi nal two physical tours and the results
of the virtual futurity will be in the next
issue where we will also bring you a full
report of British Breds competing at
the Olympics.
August is a busy month for all breeders/
owners and competitors, so we look
forward to bringing a plethora of results
Contents
of British Breds forward later on. In
the meantime, we have a wonderful
report from Weston Lawns Young Horse
Champs that this year have really
pushed awards for British Breds. Seeing
this initiative to support the promotion
of British Breds in the competition arena
and linking it with stallion nomination
prizes to British based stallions is truly
exciting. We have been delighted to be
able to offer highest placed British Bred
rosettes kindly sponsored by Rossdales
Equine to a range of top competitions
in British Dressage, Eventing & Show
Jumping and we very much hope this
will be taken up more for the 2025
competition season.
Wishing you all a lovely end to the
summer season
Mark Edwards & Flying Tinker II
Welshman Mark Edwards regained his
2022 title to be crowned Welsh Master
of 2024 in the top-billed Equestrian
Surfaces Grand Prix at the Welsh Masters
at the David Broome Event Centre in
Chepstow with Flying Tinker II (SHBGB).
Setting off at a blistering pace and slicing
every tight turn to the max, they wiped an
impressive 3.49 seconds off the time and
claim the £1,600 first prize.
For the second year in a row, Mark and
Flying Tinker also took the first leg of this
year’s International Stairway series at
Devon County.
Mark Edwards lands a win in
Deauville
Mark Edwards hit the ground running
on day one, flying into the top spot of
the 3* 1.45m Grand Prix qualifier with
Royale Tale (AES) at CSIO3* Deauville, in
France.
A big entry of 75 contended this
12-fence 1.45m speed with Mark
pressing the turbo button on the nineyear-old
Montreuxs Tale daughter to win
with 1.74 seconds to spare.
Pony Nations Cup - Compiegne
Great Britain returned victorious in the
first of the season’s FEI Nations Cup
Youth competitions in Compiegne,
France, with a resounding zero score.
Eight teams came forward with
Britain’s young team fielding three
debutantes. Pathfinder Hollie Gerken
made only one error with the 12-yearold
Argento daughter Galaxy V to post
four faults, but Sophia Rogers countered
this with a magnificent clear aboard the
Otangelo 12-year-old Neil 55 (AES).
Cate Kerr on the 17-year-old Cindy and
anchor rider Aimee Paxton, with the
14-year-old stallion Las Vegas (AES),
remained foot-perfect.
“They are all team first timers, and they
rode and coped very well, I’m very
pleased. It is looking promising for the
European Championships later this year
with a depth of choice,” said British Chef
d’Equipe Clare Whitaker.
Children-on-Horses Nations Cup
Team Great Britain claimed second in the
Children-on-Horses Nations Cup at the
Zuidwolde Youth Meeting at De Wolden,
The Netherlands, in a tight, hard-fought
competition.
Pathfinder Emily Gulliver, on a zero score
with the eight-year-old Mylord Carthago
daughter Glamor, Honey Bowes, also
touting a round one clear on the Luidam
x Cruising eight-year-old Javas El Cid,
Tabby Morgan-Evans, clear on the Cevin
Z 11-year-old Bermudez BDA (AES) and
anchor Lottie Adams made only one
error in the first round with the Diamant
De Semilly eight-year-old mare Khaleesi
OL (AES).
Belgium claimed the edge, leaving Britain
in second place. “They were very good
over a technical, up-to-height course –
I’m really pleased with them,” said Chef
d’Equipe Clare Whitaker.
Joe Stockdale & Equine
Rescue Service Kandleford in
Fontainebleau
Joe Stockdale claimed victory in the
5* 1.45m with Colin Garratt’s Equine
Rescue Services Kandleford (AES) at
Le Printemps des Sports Equestres in
Fontainebleau, France.
A total of 54 competitors came forward
in this speed class with several worldclass
riders in contention. Joe outpaced
them all, skilfully guiding the Kannan x
Pythagoras 14-year-old gelding – bred
by David Broome – into the top spot to
win by 1.77 seconds.
NATIONAL RESULTS
Chris Smith and Harthill Mexico
The International Stairway at the Royal
Highland Show saw a fourth winner
of the 2024 series crowned; this time
victory went to Chris Smith and Thomas
Dunning’s Harthill Mexico (SHBGB).
Nineteen combinations took on
the 1.50m course, with nine skilfully
jumping the necessary clear to
advance to the jump-off. None could
quite match the speed of Chris and
Harthill Mexico.
Lucy Townley, Billy At Last &
Billy Mojito
Lucy Townley realised an ambition and
claimed victory from the front in the
prestigious Walwyn Novice Jumping
Championship with the British-bred Billy
At Last (AES).
“This year I had two exceptional mares
that we all think a lot of at The Billy Stud,
so when they both jumped clear in the
first round, I set a plan for the jump-off
with the help of the team and did my best
to execute it,” added Lucy.
Five quality young horses coped well
with the atmosphere of the Castle
Arena to jump clear over the 11-fence
1.30m track and qualify for the jump-off,
Lucy using her opening round to set a
competitive target on the Cevin Z x Lux
mare. She steered second ride, Billy
Mojito (Billy Tudor x Dutch Capitol - AES),
into second place in the final line up.
Equine Industry Semen Import
In a previous issue we reported
on the introduction of physical
checks at Border Control Posts for
imported fresh chilled semen from
the EU coming into force in April this
year. To avoid these checks leading
to inevitable delays of time sensitive
packages, a trial workaround was
agreed where inseminating vets could
check consignments prior to insemination
and collate their feedback, so that the
effectiveness of the workaround could
be monitored. The trial period ends
on 31 August and vets, Defra and the
Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA)
will evaluate the outcomes and make a
recommendation for future application
of the regulation. The British Horse
Council is working closely with
relevant offi cials to make sure that
policy proposals for the 2025 season
and onwards will be proportionate and
workable for semen importers and
British breeders.
British-bred success at major
international championships
CREDIT: LUKASZ KOWALSKI
British-bred horses have earned success
across a wide variety of high-level events
this summer, from the British Dressage
Summer Regionals and Summer Area
Festivals, to high profi le international
championships and most notably the
Olympic Games.
Jo Cooper and Becky Moody’s homebred
Jagerbomb is the poster boy for
British-bred dressage success on the
world stage. The ten-year-old gelding is
sired by Therese Nilshagen’s Olympic
partner Dante Weltino (Danone I x Welt
Hit II) and out of Udysee (Jazz x Horatio)
- a mare that Becky herself trained up
to Grand Prix level. Called up for a last
minute place on the team of three to
represent Great Britain at the Paris 2024
Olympic Games, ‘Bomba’ excelled on the
greatest sporting stage. In the opening
Grand Prix competition, the combination
earned 74.938% to secure a place in
the individual medal freestyle fi nal and
help Britain on the way to team fi nal
qualifi cation. In the Grand Prix Special it
was a personal best score for the duo,
76.489%, helping the team to secure
a fantastic team bronze medal. In the
Freestyle individual medal fi nal, the
British superstar danced to Tom Jones,
earning another new personal best score
of 84.357% and a top placing of eighth.
Becky summarised how it feels to have
bred, trained and ridden a horse of this
calibre at the highest level of the sport,
“he’s so special to me, I bred him so
we’ve done everything together and
I think we we both felt a little nervous
and apprehensive, but we helped each
other out. I’m so just proud of him, he’s
amazing.”
There was also medal international
success for British-bred pony George
Clooney B.S, bred by Julie Lockey of
Bramley Stud. At the FEI Pony European
Championships held at Belgian venue
Sentower Park in July, George and his
talented Aberdeen-based rider Abigail
Gray became only the second British
combination to have won the title of
Pony European Champion, repeating the
2013 and 2025 successes of Phoebe
Peters and the Danish-bred pony SL
Lucci. Abigail and George achieved a
silver medal in the individual competition,
before going on to claim gold in the
freestyle test, topping the podium and
securing the European Champion title
with a wonderful 80.140%.
An overwhelmed Abigail was full of
praise for her outstanding pony, “he
has been absolutely amazing at this
championship and on the run up to it.
I am so proud, not only of him but of
everyone that has helped us get here.”
George Clooney B.S. is by prolifi c British
pony stallion Caesar 171, and out of
Ballarena F.H (Santano x Democraat).
Caesar 171 is also sire to George
Clooney’s full sibling, Ella, who was also
GB PRE is the officially appointed
GB PRE 2024 – Hartpury – 26th, 27th & 28th July.
ANCCE 3*** Morphology & National Championship Show.
This year the GB PRE Championship
Breed show has been awarded
3* status by ANCCE, (The Royal
Purebred Spanish Horse Breeders’
Association in Seville) for our
Morphology classes. This is the highest
status you can be awarded and
is a huge achievement for
both our organisation and
the PRE breed in the
UK. The 3*** status
ensures the integrity
of our event and
means we have two
offi cial ANCCE judges
allocated to our show
who travel over from
Spain to judge the
Morphology and ridden
tests, which is
very exciting.
Futurity….Our gratitude goes out to the
two sponsors of the Futurity Evaluation
Day at Hartpury that we host as part
of GB PRE – Meadowbrook PRE Stud
and Twenlows Farm Stud. Every owner
attending the Futurity will receive a
thermal mug. Just another one of the
many reasons why GB PRE is such an
amazing event to attend and be part of.
We look forward to welcoming everyone
at Hartpury on 28th July.
What is a PRE?
(Pura Raza Española)
The Purebred Spanish was created in the
sixteenth century, at times of economic
and political boom in Spain. It was the
perfect combination of Renaissance
beauty and Spain’s Golden
Age; it is thus, the faithful
refl ection of the literature
at that time. Purebred
Spanish horses refl ect
both the past and the
present, while at the
same time allowing
us to sense a future
full of possibilities.
Equilibrium is always
the key to success;
that is why this horse is
one of the most appreciated
breeds in the work. It is a perfect
balance. The best horse is one that
is good at everything. Its beauty and
levelheadedness are the result of the
care and respect for maintaining its blood
pure, without crossbreeding and with
genetic quality that passes from one
generation to another.
One of its most appreciated virtues
is its versatility. Psychologically wellbalanced,
with a harmonious shape, a
The Purebred Spanish Horse is
enshrouded by natural beauty, to which
each and every detailed trait is added
with care. Jealous when it comes
to accepting external infl uences, it
preserves Spain’s traditional, identifying
features. Spanish attire or wearing
chaps, spats, pendant trim topped by
a wide-brimmed hat are all elements
that enhance the presence of a PRE, to
make it a visual jewel that has remained
unchanged with the passing of time.
What is a PRE
Fusion horse?
A PRE Fusion is a horse crossed with
a purebred (sire or dam), which has
descended from ancestral PRE stock,
with a horse (sire or dam) from an
overseas studbook such as KWPN or
Oldenburg for example. The PRE Fusion
horses are becoming increasingly
popular because of their intelligence
and trainable nature which is inherited
from their PRE ancestry and for dressage
the ability for collection crossed with the
paces of the warmblood.
Below is an example of a PRE Fusion
colt foal, 2 months old, his coat will
become completely black once his foal
coat has fallen out. His sire is a purebred
PRE 16’2hh Grand Prix black stallion
Deseado CCV and the dam is a purebred
warmblood 16’2hh black KWPN mare
by Sezuan.
the competition:
“It’s been an incredible opportunity to
further my knowledge on breeding and
selecting horses with the conformation,
movement and qualities needed to
succeed in top sport and ultimately
produce the best equine athletes
possible.
The training and support provided by
the AES team both before and during
the Championships was brilliant and
exactly what we needed to perform. The
Championship itself was held at Stutturi
ASK, a state of the art facility and my idea
of horsey heaven! Having the opportunity
to gain hands on experience running
horses in Europe was invaluable however
Below: Ava, Kaz, Tia and Jessica.
Above: Jessica Bryers and Ava Fowler.
it also made me realise just how much
quality is coming out of British breeding.
British bred horses can more than hold
their own against the horses bred on the
continent if not better.
I run Hope House Stud in
Nottinghamshire and my main goal for
the future of the Hope House breeding
program is to see Hope House offspring
competing successfully at a high level in
Showjumping and Eventing. Alongside
this, my goal is to build a reputation
for producing high quality horses with
trainable temperaments and near
perfect conformation to ensure each
Hope House offspring has a long and
successful career in sport.”
One of the most impressive aspects of
our Young Breeders performance was
the wonderful team spirit they created,
supporting each other at every turn and
forging connections for the future. It was
lovely to see this rewarded by the team
gaining a perfect mark of 10 for teamwork
in the horse preparation element of the
competition, with a lovely score of 9 for
tail plaiting no doubt due to senior team
member Tia Lewis who, it turns out, has a
particular talent for those!
“It’s been a great experience and I’ve
learnt a lot. There’s much room for
growth in the UK. All the countries and
participants are so passionate about
breeding which is exciting for the future”
Another senior team member with a lot
of knowledge and experience is the
eventing breeder and rider Emily Nicol:
“The whole experience is one I
won’t forget – I feel grateful I had the
opportunity to be around like minded
individuals to discuss our thoughts and
experiences as young breeders!”
Another lovely aspect was to see
our junior members really rise to the
occasion with some great work shown in
all aspects of the competition.
“It’s been so inspirational. The wealth,
knowledge and passion is contagious.
I’ve loved meeting the other teams and
making new friends globally. I hope I
make the team again in 2 years time as
it’s been such a fantastic experience.”
Ava combines her passion for breeding,
which is inspired by Olwen Coope, an
experienced breeder and family friend,
with successfully competing in the BD
Junior Dressage circuit.
Another Junior member with a lot of
promise for the future is Jessica
Bryers:
“Working with
the AES for the
International Young
Breeders World
Championships
has been
absolutely
amazing as I’ve
made so many
new connections
but have also
been able to
learn so much.
The experience
was incredible and
something I would love to
do again.”
Jessica owns a highly successful pony
And what a weekend it has been for the
team! Safe to say, we did not exactly
anticipate that the only flight back from
Copenhagen on Sunday night would be
cancelled with no options available until
late the following Tuesday... but being
the strong team they are, they soon got
themselves (and, more to the point, their
horses at home) organised and made
the most of their extended stay! We hope
they had a fabulous time!
We would like to thank everybody who
has given their time and resources
so generously and freely to make this
possible:
Ryan Bryers and Olwyn Coope who
travelled with our juniors Jessica
Bryers and Ava Fowler and
whose support and
encouragement for the
entire team were
much appreciated.
Ryan was an
absolute rock
in helping with
the challenging
logistics of flight
cancellations
and an
exhausted
team suddenly
stranded on late
Sunday evening.
He also took the
lovely photographs we
are delighted to share
with you here. Thank you so
much, Ryan!
Sarah Wilkes from Stallion AI Services
and the entire team there for arranging
superb training opportunities and for their
lovely sponsorship - the team wore their
polo shirts with much pride!
And last but not least Anna Jerbo and
Sasha Whitaker, our team trainers, who
worked tirelessly not only during their
extended stay in Denmark, but over
the weeks and months leading up to
the competition in organising such a
wide range of training activities and
opportunities.
“I am so proud of what the team
achieved. The senior team gaining
a 10 for team work was a real highlight.
The competition was very close, and
our team wasn’t far out of the placings
in many areas. We are in a really strong
I’m so happy for Amelia’s individual
success. I hope she can use it to
promote the super foals she is
breeding and producing. Anna and
myself are keen to develop a young
breeders group that continues to
support and educate young breeders
building a vibrant community, not just
focused on the world championship.
That said, we learned a great deal this
year for the future.”
A big thank you to the organisers in
Denmark and the entire team at the
International Young Breeders who work
tirelessly in creating these excellent
opportunities for the next generation of
breeders. We are already looking forward
to the next IYB World Championships
The huge advantage of this method
is that stallion owners could choose
the date and venue of an ODE
convenient to them, rather than having
to attend the NaStA test at a specifi ed
location on a specifi c date. The test
can be tailored to each applicant’s
circumstances. But the stallion would
only have one chance at Premium
Performance qualifi cation. If he failed, he
could never re-apply.
Entry is likely to cost £250, refundable
if the stallion is successful.
Arab Horse Society launches
new test for Premium stallions
Anne Brown, Chairman –
AHS Premium Performance
Scheme
With the demise of the National
Stallion Association’s (NaStA)
tough two-day test for stallions,
the Arab Horse Society proposes a new
route to performance assessments for
stallions with Arabian blood.
The option will be offered from 2025,
with successful stallions qualifying for
Premium status from 2026. All their
existing and future progeny will be
eligible for Premium progeny awards
from the Arab Horse Society.
Stallions must be at least fi ve years
old to apply and be registered with
the AHS as pure Arab, Anglo Arab or
part-Arab.
To meet the criteria, a stallion would
complete an approved British Eventing
(BE) One Day Event (ODE), with no more
than the penalties listed in the box.
In addition, judges would inspect them
for conformation, temperament and
movement, either at a pre-identifi ed
ODE or separately at an Arab Horse
Society show. There may be a
requirement for an Arab Judge to ride
the stallion, or for a vet to examine it, if
the judges have any concerns.
While no proof of fertility would be
necessary, all new Premium stallions
would be required to be tested for the
three most prevalent mutant genes
(SCID, LFS and CA) and the results
sent to the AHS where to be held in
confi dence. Any carrier status of a
Premium stallion must be made known
to the owner of a client mare. The
AHS and the World Arab Horse
Organization very strongly recommend
that carrier should never be mated
to carrier.
Hopefully, mares would also be
able to qualify for Premium
Performance status. Currently only
two AHS mares have earned the
honour. The benefi t is that if the
owner wants to breed from a Premium
Performance mare, they can choose
any stallion and earn the Premium
(currently £200) on registration of the
foal with the AHS, which is complimentary
for them.
Final acceptance will be at the discretion
of the PPS committee.
How can my stallion be
graded into the Premium
Performance Scheme
without NaStA?
membership or GoBE classes –
please see the British Eventing
website for more details.
An assessor will either be
at the event to ascertain the
suitability of the horse, or you
will be asked to send:
1. The results as published
online or on the day
2. A video of the full
showjumping round (no edits)
3. A video of the horse
leaving the start box and
jumping at least the fi rst XC
fence
4. A video of the horse
jumping the last XC fence
Conformation and Ridden
assessment at AHS Shows
Please liaise with the
PPS Committee who will
work with you to fi nd a
commutable AHS Show for
the Assessment
What’s the procedure?
AHS Judges will assess
your horse’s conformation,
temperament, movement
and ridden performance.
This is likely to happen at the
conclusion of the show
1. You will be asked to
present your horse in hand
to be stood up for your
conformation assessment
2. You may be asked to walk
and trot your horse
on a straight line or around
a triangle
3. You will be given the
opportunity to ride your horse
if you wish to demonstrate
their ridden paces
4. At least one assessor will
ride your horse to judge their
ridden performance.
Pass/Fail
Your horse may attend
multiple tests per year,
but only one assessment
per year.
Your horse must pass both
the test and the assessment
to be graded into the
Premium Performance
Scheme.
Vet requirements are to
be confi rmed.
Sports Pony Studbook Society
AND IT’S GOLD!
The pinnacle of the sports pony
year is the annual Pony European
Championships which this year,
unusually, was held at two different
sites. The Dressage and Jumping
Championships were held at Opglabbeek
(BEL) then the next week, the Eventers
competed at Westerslede (GER).
It’s always great to see British-bred
ponies selected for these teams and we
were thrilled that 3 of the 4 combinations
competing in Dressage were Britishbred
(and all by SPSS graded stallions!)
and then in the Jumping Team, 4 out of
5 were British-bred including an SPSS
Elite graded stallion. The Eventing squad
of 6, who brought home Team Bronze,
had only one British-bred pony, Man In
The Mirror, by the Anglo Arab Persiflage
who also Evented at 2* level. As Man
In The Mirror is just 9 years old and his
rider, Sofia Paul, is currently 14, we hope
they’ll be back on the team in the future
representing British-breeding.
At the Dressage/Jumping venue,
the first Team medal to be decided was
the dressage, where the GB team did
their best but were narrowly beaten to
4th place. However, topping the
individual results in the team
test with over 75% and
raising expectations
for the following 2
individual medal
rounds, was the
very experienced
combination of
British-bred and
SPSS registered
George Clooney
B.S and his
partner since
2022, Abigail Gray.
After a day’s break,
all the dressage
combinations competed
again for the Individual Medals
and Abigail & George were again
amazing, taking the Individual Silver
place. Then, the next day, the top 18
competed again for the Freestyle
Medals and this time George & Abigail
were absolutely
phenomenal and
did an amazing
test, scoring 80.14%
which was not just
a personal best
as a combination
but also George’s
highest international
score with any rider.
This put Abigail
and George at top
of the results by
nearly 3% and they
were proclaimed
as the 2024 Pony
Dressage Freestyle
Champions. What
a way to finish your
FEI pony career!
George was bred in
Yorkshire by Julie
Lockey and is one
of a string of full
siblings all by the
top dressage pony
sire, SPSS Elite
Caesar 171, and
out of Julie’s small
horse mare, Ballarena F.H. (Santano x
Democraat). Remarkably, the first of the
6 full siblings, SPSS Elite Ella, was also
on the GB team! Both Ella and George
have competed at the Pony Euros before
– George in 2023 with Abigail, in 2022
with Mette Dahl and in 2018 with Sophie
Taylor. Ella first competed at the Pony
Euros for Ireland back in 2016 and also in
2021 with Gracie Morgan (GB).
The Pony Jumping Championship
classes ran alongside the Dressage
and the British team included Lucy
Simpson’s homebred SPSS Elite
graded stallion Las Vegas
(Eurocommerce Berlin
x Dutch Diamond)
ridden by Aimee
Paxton. Brilliant and
consistent riding
by the team
over 3 rounds,
with the scores
being carried
forward each
time, resulted in
a glorious Team
Gold for GB on a
final score of just
8 faults ahead of
German (12 faults) and
Ireland (15 faults). After a
rest day, all the British riders
and their ponies then went through to
the Individual Final where they jumped
another 2 rounds over a tough and
technical course with a maximum height
of 1.35m. With scores still cumulating,
Aimee & Las Vegas finished a creditable
15th with the best of the other GB team
members finishing just out of the medals
in 4th. The overall Individual Gold medal
went to the British-bred pony Double
Pleasure (Follow Me x Quidam de Revel)
and Jack Kent (IRL) who remarkably didn’t
have any faults across all 5 rounds of the
competition or in the final jump off for the
Individual Gold where they were more
than 2 seconds faster than the others to
take the Gold.
Las Vegas (who is known as “Asbo” at
home) has been competed by Aimee
since 2022 when she took over from
her older sister, Sophie, who had started
Asbo’s pony jumping career in 2020
and got great results including 4th at
the 2021 Pony Discovery Championship
Final and also qualified for both the
Pony Foxhunter and Pony Discovery
Championships at Horse of the Year
Show (HOYS) that year. With Aimee,
Asbo won the 148cm Championship Final
at the 2022 Royal Highland Show (over
a 1.25m course) and also had success in
1.35m classes including qualifying for the
HOYS 2022 Leading Pony Show Jumper
Of the Year Final as well as winning the
Success for Asbo & Aimee continued in
2023 with many wins and top placings.
Then, this year, they competed for GB
for the fi rst time at the 2024 CSIOP
Compiègne. He was a key member of
the Nations Cup team winning the Gold
remarkably jumping clear in each of the
5 jumping rounds required at this event –
and so earning the coveted SPSS ELITE
to SPSS graded ponies/horses who
have competed internationally, are
currently standing with the SPSS.
Great National Results
Back in April at the British Dressage
Winter Championships, SPSS breeder
Carrie Passmore and her home-bred,
SPSS passported gelding, Star Gazer
(SPSS Elite Littledale Bright Star x
Cassander) were the Petplan Medium
Silver Winter Area Festival Champions.
Then, at the same event, Lydia Holmes
rode SPSS passported Caramelle
(Caramel WE x Farriers Rambler) to
victory in the Pet Plan Novice Bronze
Under 21 Area Festival Championships.
British-bred by Amanda Blackshaw,
Caramelle & Lydia followed up this
win a couple of weeks later with 6th
place in the Novice / 80cm class at
the Red Gorilla Combined Training
Championships.
In July, at the Hartpury International
event, we were delighted by the number
and quality of British-bred ponies in
all the British Dressage Young Pony
Championships classes – and thrilled
that SPSS Registered ponies took both
the 5 and 6 year old Championships.
The 5 year old Champion was SPSS
passported MM Sweet Pea (SPSS
graded Woodlander Sir Gorgeous x FS
Champion de Luxe) who was bred by
Naomi Maxted-Massey and ridden by
Shelley Reeve-Smith and they had the
highest score across all 3 Young Pony
Championships. Then, Danish-bred
SPSS Head Studbook mare My Beauty
(FS Numero Uno x FS Mr. Right) and
Charlotte Thomas topped the strong 6
year old class. Charlotte and her mother
co-own “Betty” having imported her
towards the end of last year. This class
had very strong SPSS representation
with the 2nd and 3rd placed ponies,
Godrics Cleopatra (SPSS Elite LE Chiffre
x Painted Black) & Godrics Chemin de
Vie (SPSS Elite Godrics Campeggio x
Donnerwetter) both being British-bred by
Godrics Stud who also bred both their
sires using their foundation pony stallion,
SPSS Elite Ceasar 171.
In Show Jumping, as well as Las
Vegas doing so well, SPSS passported
& graded stallion Pitchwood’s Ceasers
Palace (SPSS Elite Grey Palace x SPSS
Elite Machno Carwyn) and Ella Bryers
have recorded many double clears
to qualify for the Pony Newcomers
Second Round and the Pony Restricted
Rider 1.10m Championship Final. Then
in Eventing, the British-bred SPSS
passported ponies Miss Winnifred
Wilde (Up With The Lark x unknown) and
Buzz Lightyear (Romulus x unknown)
both went clear Cross Country in the
Pony 2* International class at Alnwick
Ford in July. Sadly both riders, Evie
Wise & Tabitha Taylor are 16 this year
and so will no longer be eligible for the
pony classes.
Gradings, Evaluations and Foal
Passports
At the time of writing, we have started
our summer season of Mare & Stallion
Grading events as well as Youngstock
Evaluations (which are primarily done
though the British Breeding Futurity) and
we have already accepted more stallions,
had top quality SPSS foals achieve high
scoring SPSS Gold Premiums and some
lovely mares with Head Studbook scores.
Although the summer events will be
just about over by the time this article
is published, we are also planning an
Autumn Grading event in the Shropshire
area – please email us if you’d like more
information.
Foal passport applications are already
coming in – don’t forget that there’s an
OPTIONS FOR
BREEDING
WITH
PROBLEM
MARES
Article provided Markin Hinz of BOJESEN &
PETERSEN BIOTECH ApS I www.bactivate.eu
Bacterial infections in the uterus
can cause reduced fertility in
the mare. Bacteria gain access
to the uterus through the cervix,
due to poor conformation or during
breeding or foaling. Healthy young
mares clear bacteria rapidly. In mares
with compromised uterine defense
mechanisms bacteria can establish an
infection in the uterus. If the infection is
unnoticed or left untreated, the infection
may become chronic.
The most commonly isolated bacteria
from such conditions are Streptococcus
equi subspecies zooepidemicus
(Strep. zoo). In the chronically infected
mare Strep. zoo can establish an
infection deep within the uterine lining
(endometrium). Strep zoo appear to
lower its metabolic rate during chronic
infection, thus complicating diagnostics
and antimicrobial treatment dependent
on active bacterial growth.
When a mare fails to conceive after
the third insemination attempt, she
is considered a problem mare. This
can be a costly challenge for horse
owners and breeders. Typically, the
veterinarian would have attempted to
eliminate bacteria, fl ushed the mare’s
uterus, and possibly even changed the
stallion. Despite
these standard
procedures,
some mares still
fail to conceive. Often
these mares may also
have a negative cultural
swab which is leaving
the breeder at a loss as
to what to try next?
Statistically the most
common problem for the
barren mare is a dormant
streptococcal infection
and the older the mare
is, the more common
dormant infections are.
Sleepy/dormant bacteria are not
detectable (Culture Negative Swab),
and antibiotic treatment is not effective
(dormant bacteria tolerate antibiotics).
The streptococci bacteria are able to
colonise uterine glands deep into the
mucosal lining of the uterus. They can
envelope themselves into the cells
and essentially switch off and become
dormant. This renders the streptococci
very resistant to treatment due to being
in this dormant stage. They are also
incredibly diffi cult to diagnose.
Recently a new treatment has been
developed in Denmark that may offer
some solutions.
bActivate is a cost-effective product
designed to help identify and treat the
dormant bacterial infections in the
mare’s uterus. bActivate
activates dormant bacteria,
making them detectable
and treatable. This can be
achieved by introduction
of bActivate, a bacterial
growth medium, into the
uterus. bActivate has been
tested by the therio group
at Hagyard Equine Medical
Institute, the world’s largest
equine hospital in Kentucky
who basically normalized
mare fertility by including
bActivate into the standard
repro work-up.
In repeatedly barren mares it can be
economically advantageous to determine
whether a mare has a dormant bacterial
infection and the use of bActivate to
overcome this may well be worthwhile.
How does it work? When a bacterial
infection is active in a mare it is easy to
treat. Swab results will identify its antibiotic
susceptibility and then your vet can treat
her accordingly post AI wash out.
By activating the dormant and
resistant bacteria this enables normal
management process to take place.
A recent study at the Godolphin stud
proved very successful where 19 problem
mares were treated and post treatment
16 had successful pregnancies.
For mares that are 12 years or older,
have had more than 3 foals or had a
history of uterine problems pre-activating
dormant streptococci may prove to aid
pregnancy rates.
The concept behind bActivate (promoting
bacterial-activation) was discovered
by Morten Rønn Petersen, DVM, PhD
and Professor Anders Miki Bojesen,
DVM, PhD. They both have extensive
experience with bacterial endometritis
in mares and have published several
scientic papers on the subject. ●
LAWSONIA:
A PIG OF A PROBLEM?
By Lucy Brock BVSc
CertAVP(ESM) MRCVS,
Pinkham Equine Veterinary
Services
IAs we come out of summer and into
the autumn, various diseases affecting
older foals and weanlings come to the
forefront of our minds.
‘Lawsonia’ is one such disease and,
since its discovery forty years ago, it has
become an increasing problem in the
equine youngstock population of the
UK. Knowledge of the disease has been
slow to spread, especially amongst non-
Thoroughbred breeders, where it is often
having a foal affected by Lawsonia that
first brings this life-threatening disease to
a breeder’s attention.
What is Lawsonia?
Lawsonia intracellularis is an intracellular
bacteria that was initially described as
causing a wasting disease of pigs but
has adapted to infect horses. While we
used to think it was spread from previous
application of pig slurry as fertilizer, it is
now known to be an entirely different
strain that infects horses. This strain is
present in many wildlife species in the UK
and it is in fact these that are responsible
for its spread.
Below left: This weanling presented having lost
weight and was failing to thrive. Below right: Weight
loss can be sudden and dramatic.
What does it do
to foals?
Lawsonia bacteria present in the
environment are eaten by foals. The
bacteria then invade the cells lining the
small intestine causing them to multiply,
losing their absorbative capacity. This
thickening of the small intestine is
known as a ‘proliferative enteropathy’
and leaves the small intestine unable to
absorb nutrients or fluids.
Lawsonia is seen in foals and weanlings
from approximately 4-9 months and is
most prevalent from August through to
January. Affected foals will lose weight
and fail to thrive. In the acute, sudden
onset form of the disease,
foals will suddenly appear
very sick and may show
signs of colic, develop
a fever, lose weight
dramatically and have
moderate to severe
diarrhoea. They rapidly
become dehydrated and
may develop fluid swellings
(oedema) under the jaw,
belly and in the lower legs
due to protein loss. In the
more chronic form of the
disease, foals will lose
condition more gradually.
They may have intermittent
diarrhoea and gradually develop oedema
over time. Both forms of the disease can
prove fatal, especially in cases where
peritonitis (an abdominal infection)
develops secondarily. It is known that
while only a few animals may get sick with
the disease, exposure on infected farms
can be high, with multiple foals becoming
infected sub-clinically. These foals may fail
to thrive and reach target weight.
Diagnosis
Lawsonia
intracellularis is
an intracellular
bacteria that was
initially described
as causing a
wasting disease
of pigs but has
adapted to infect
horses.
Above: Abdominal ultrasound images of a foal with
Lawsonia. The red arrows show the classic thickening
of the small intestinal wall.
Diagnosis is made by clinical examination
and confirmed by laboratory analysis.
Together with external
clinical signs, ultrasound
examination of the
abdomen reveals the
thickening of the small
intestine. The severity of
this can vary depending
on the timeframe of the
disease, but can be
very obvious with small
intestinal wall measuring
greater than 1cm (a normal
measurement would be
less than 3mm).
Blood analysis will show a
drop in proteins (albumin
especially) and rise in white blood cell
count. Inflammatory markers may vary
as this is a proliferative and not an
inflammatory disease. Electrolytes such
as sodium and chloride concentration
are often altered due to dehydration and
fluid loss.
The gold standard diagnostic test
for the presence of Lawsonia is PCR
examination of faeces. As affected foals
shed Lawsonia bacteria intermittently
in their faeces, this should be carried
out on multiple samples (at least three)
taken from different times of the day and
pooled together.
Blood testing for antibodies to Lawsonia
is cheap, simple and widely performed.
Limitations of this for diagnosis must
be considered. In an acute case where
there has not been time for antibodies
20 | British Breeder
Lawsonia | Feature
to develop, an affected foal might test
negative. A repeat of the test a few weeks
later would be expected to be positive.
Conversely a positive antibody result only
confi rms exposure to Lawsonia bacteria
and not necessarily clinical disease.
A positive antibody blood test should
therefore be backed up by a positive
faecal PCR when confi rming a diagnosis
of Lawsonia in a foal.
Treatment
Early diagnosis is essential when
treating affected foals. The mainstay of
treatment is antibiotic therapy, usually
with Oxytetracycline given intravenously
initially followed by an extended course
of oral Doxycycline. Other antibiotics
may be used in diffi cult cases that fail to
respond well.
Replacement of lost proteins via
intravenous plasma transfusion is costly
but, in cases where total blood proteins
have fallen dangerously low, can be
life-saving and in nearly all cases will
help turn things around more quickly.
Pre-prepared equine plasma is available
commercially and offers a quicker and
safer alternative to ‘homemade’ plasma
made by collecting blood and leaving it
to separate under gravity.
Other supportive treatments include
drugs to reduce fever and maintain
demeanour and
appetite. It is
important to try to
keep these foals
eating to prevent
any further loss of
protein. Palatable
high protein feeds
should be offered in
increasing quantities.
Intravenous fl uid
therapy may be
required to correct
electrolyte imbalance
and maintain
cardiovascular
function in severely
affected cases. This should be done
with caution and most likely in a hospital
setting. Oral electrolyte supplementation
might be advised.
Recovery can be slow and treatment
prolonged and costly. Regular monitoring
of blood parameters and repeat
ultrasound examinations can be used
to monitor progress. Bodyweight can
be monitored for evidence of an upturn.
Affected foals may struggle to reach
potential predicted bodyweights and
in Thoroughbreds, Lawsonia has been
shown to contribute to economic losses
due to poor sales performance.
Above: Blood analysis showing a rise in white blood cell count and dramatic fall in proteins classically seen in
Lawsonia cases. Other alterations such as moderately increased infl ammatory markers and loss of electrolytes
are evident. Below inset: Vaccine being administered rectally in a foal. Foals should be over three months of age
when given their fi rst dose.
Prevention is better than cure
A commercially available vaccine for pigs
can be used (off licence) in horses and is
found to be very effective at preventing
infection. Given the off licence nature
of its use, it is important to note that
this has now
been widely used
without any cause
for concern. Thirty
milliliters of vaccine is
administered rectally,
which is surprisingly
well tolerated! Two
doses are given one
month apart. Foals
should be over three
months of age when
given their fi rst dose.
Care should be taken
not to leave this
too late such that
exposure may have
already occurred. Vaccinating foals in
batches as they reach the correct age
works well.
Periods of stress are known to increase the
likelihood of many diseases due to a drop
in immune function. As Lawsonia cases
are most prevalent in recently weaned
foals, timing of vaccinations in relation to
weaning is an important consideration. It
is recommended that ideally foals are a
couple of weeks clear of their second dose
by the time weaning commences.
Worm control is also an important factor.
Anecdotally Lawsonia is often seen in
foals in combination with high worm
burdens or clinical Cyathastomiasis (larval
small red worm emergence). It stands to
reason that anything putting added stress
on the immune system, coupled with an
infl amed and damaged gut, would leave
a foal more exposed to infection. Regular
egg counts and targeted worming
strategies should be implemented in
all youngstock.
Consideration should also be given to
possible wildlife hosts and their access
to areas grazed by foals. Foxes, badgers
and rabbits have all been shown to carry
Lawsonia. Pest control strategies and
improvements in fencing may need to
be implemented. Changes to grazing
plans to reduce exposure of weanlings
to certain wildlife hosts should be
considered.
In conclusion
Lawsonia intracellularis represents an
ongoing and increasing threat to the UK
youngstock population. In Thoroughbred
populations vaccination protocols are
now widely established largely due to
the risk of associated economic loss.
However, given the ubiquitous and
indiscriminate nature of the bacteria
coupled with the suffering and heartache
associated with an outbreak, it seems
prudent to recommend vaccination in all
foal populations. ●
Feeding | Feature
NUTRITION: THE CORNERSTONE
OF FOAL HEALTH
Dr Tom Shurlock, Nutrition Consultant to British Horse Feeds tells us about the importance of
nutrition for the foal, broodmare and stallion.
Afoal’s journey to a fit, healthy
life begins long before it
takes its first steps. The key
to a strong foundation lies in the
nutrition of its dam, the broodmare.
Providing the correct nutrients
throughout gestation and lactation
is paramount in ensuring the foal
gets the best possible start.
The Balancing Act of
Broodmare Nutrition
Owners face a dual challenge
when caring for a pregnant mare:
maintaining her health while
supporting foetal development.
In the initial stages of pregnancy,
the foetus grows slowly, and the
mare’s nutritional needs resemble
those of a non-pregnant horse.
This changes dramatically around
the fifth month as foetal growth
accelerates, demanding increased
nutrients from the mare.
Despite its rapid growth in the
final trimester, the foetus remains
relatively minor compared to
the mare. However, this final
stage is crucial. The foal gains
approximately a pound per day,
accounting for 70-75% of its birth
weight. This exponential growth
places immense strain on the
mare, necessitating careful diet
monitoring and increased
nutrient intake.
Underfeeding a pregnant mare
can have severe consequences.
To nourish the foetus, the mare
depletes her own reserves,
leading to weight loss and
mineral deficiencies. This can
result in poor colostrum quality,
inadequate milk production, and
reduced fertility. On the other
hand, overfeeding can cause
complications during foaling and
increase the risk of conditions
like laminitis.
Restricting protein in the final
three months can reduce
the foal’s ability to absorb
essential antibodies from
colostrum by up to 50%.
Ideally, a broodmare should
maintain a body condition score
of 3-3.5 out of 5 or 5-6 out of nine,
depending on the scoring system.
However, the weight of the foetus
may reduce fat cover over the ribs
in late pregnancy.
The cornerstone of a broodmare’s
diet is forage, with concentrates
used to supplement energy needs.
During early to mid-gestation,
good quality pasture, hay, and a
vitamin/mineral supplement may
suffice. It is essential to avoid
overfeeding, as the mare can
easily gain excess weight.
As the mare enters the final
trimester, typically during winter,
forage quality declines. Highquality
forage remains essential as
the primary source of nutrients for
both mare and foal.
Vital Nutrients for Mare
and Foal
Several nutrients are crucial for
foetal development. Calcium
and phosphorus are vital for
bone health, with requirements
increasing significantly in the final
trimester. Other essential trace
minerals include iron, selenium,
zinc, copper, and manganese,
which support bone and muscle
development. Vitamins A and E,
found in pasture and fresh hay,
British Breeder | 29
Feature | Feeding
are also essential and may require
supplementation.
Protein is another critical nutrient.
Restricting protein in the fi nal
three months can reduce the
foal’s ability to absorb essential
antibodies from colostrum by up
to 50%.
Nutrition for Breeding
Stallions and Mares
While the nutrient requirements
for breeding stallions and mares
are not drastically different from
maintenance levels, there are
subtle variations. Stallions require
a slight increase of around 5%,
while a broodmare’s needs
gradually rise, reaching two to
three times the maintenance level
during peak lactation.
To meet these increasing
demands, while considering the
mare’s decreasing appetite as
the gestation progresses, two
strategies can be employed:
increasing nutrient density and
improving digestive effi ciency.
The Role of Specialised
Feeds
Products with beet pulp or beet
pulp combined with alfalfa and
oat fi bre blend alongside cooked
linseed can signifi cantly enhance
broodmare nutrition. Beet pulp
improves digestion and releases
slow-release energy, when
blended with alfalfa and oat fi bre
it offers a higher nutrient profi le,
ideal for the increasing demands
of late pregnancy. Cooked linseed
provides a rich source of protein
and oil.
Additionally, these products offer
other benefi ts. Pectins in beet pulp
support gut health.Omega fatty
acids contribute to fertility, and
antioxidants help combat oxidative
stress.
By carefully managing a
broodmare’s nutrition, owners can
When foals start eating
solid food, particularly
grain, their stomach will
become more acidic.
signifi cantly enhance the health
and well-being of their foals,
setting them on the path to
a strong and successful life.
Other issues to consider
Gastric ulcers aren’t just a problem
for adult horses; foals are also
at risk. Up to 97% of foals may
develop ulcers, especially around
weaning. These sores can cause
various problems, including poor
growth and colic.
Foal stomachs are naturally
protected by milk, but this changes
at weaning. When foals start eating
solid food, particularly grain, their
stomach will become more acidic.
This can lead to ulcers. To help
prevent this, feed mares a diet high
in fi bre and low in sugar. This will
not only benefi t the mare but also
the foal who often eats her food.
spectacular young horse performances. They enjoyed welcoming
former and new participants alike, answering their questions and
sharing understanding about breeding and performance.
Hartpury’s evaluations were hosted
courtesy of GB PRE (www.gbpre.co.uk),
the officially appointed organisation
for ANCCE (Real Asociación Nacional
in the UK. The GB PRE
show is held over three
days and is unique in
that it covers so many
equestrian disciplines
all in one place, a true
testament to the versatility
of the PRE and Iberian
breeds. As part of this
event, GB PRE hosted us,
and we were delighted
to welcome numerous entries from their
membership to our own evaluations.
Top scoring entry was Elite 9.15 dressage
filly foal Clapton Banks Beaujolais
Nouveau (Nico x Johnson) owned
Clapton Banks Beaujolais Nouveau.
“Thank you so much, we
had a lovely day it was
so helpful and a friendly
and positive occasion. I
will definitely be bringing
more horses forward in
the future and supporting
and bred by Mathew James. This filly
impressed the evaluators with 9.25s
for walk and canter – for suppleness,
purpose and carriage.
Fellow Elite 9.05 showjumping foal
followed closely, bred and owned
by Kelly Clack, Waterbank Augustus
(Tresaison Ricochet x
Tornado Af Knabstrup), a
striking colt embodying
Kelly’s breeding plans
“My aims are to help
promote the versatile
Knabstrupper breed in
UK. They are incredibly
kind, intelligent and calm
horses which have the
ability and trainability to
excel in any discipline.
They are also popular
with para riders due to their calm and
co-operative nature, notably the late
stallion LJT Lucas Normark who won gold
in the 2016 Rio Paralympic Games and
Zanko who won gold at the 2004 Athens
Paralympic Games”. My foal’s sire is
Tresaison Ricochet who is a KNN graded
Knabstrupper who competed British
Showjumping up to 1.35m before being
retired sound to stud”. Kelly added to
her story “The Futurity was really well
run and everyone was incredibly friendly
and helpful on the day. It was lovely
to have it on the same day as the GB
PRE event as we stayed over the night
before so our mares could be well rested
beforehand and not have to travel in
the heat, and we had a lovely evening
watching the GB PRE event the night
before. Being a small hobby breeder,
myself and my partner felt at ease during
the Futurity”.
Waterbank Augustus.
Yeguada Lago’s Charlotte Crocker-
Westlake had some great results this
year with top dressage three year old
colt Lago Rasputin (by Armas Leviton)
securing Gold 8.87 and top dressage two
year old mare Lago Serfina (by Torrijo
HBM) securing Gold 8.67. The Lago stud
was established in order to produce
the future of Spanish horse champions.
The aim is to produce horses that are
capable of successfully competing in
every discipline and to promote the truly
versatile and multifunctional abilities of
this breed. Foundation bloodlines have
been drawn from the best Champion
lines and these horses have proved
themselves on the National, International
and Olympic circuits.
Top yearling, evaluated in the eventing
section (Gold 8.5) was Pennine View
Cruz (Z Concorde x Ben’s Affaere)
presented by Chris and Lucy Thompson
of Clarendon Stud. Clarendon stud is
the home of Pennine View sport horse
stallions, and owner/breeder Lucy says
“we breed eventers by combining high
performance show jumping bloodlines
with thoroughbred mares from Ben
Faerie and Java Tiger lines. Pennine
View Cruz is a sweet kind mare with a
lovely temperament, and she and her
sister showed brilliantly at our recent
open day as well as at Bath & West,
Devon County and the New Forest Show.
Her full brother, Pennine View Call the
Shots, was evaluated at Futurity in 2022
and also secured a Gold premium”.
Regarding their views on maximising the
potential of talented young horses, Lucy
and Chris add “we are very proud of our
programme and wok hard to help our
horses find homes with people who can
nurture their talents, using appropriate
training techniques at the right time
so their performance potential can be
optimised. In the end, a good home is
the top priority”.
Leading 4yo (Gold 8.68) was awarded
to endurance entry Niqui Akhdhar
(Aquilegia Akhdhar x Sheikan Star) bred
by Esther Groen. High scores were
awared in particular for trot and canter for
balance, economy and ground cover.
Niqui Akhdar.
Top sports pony (Gold 8.5) went to Henza
Chatterbox (FS Champion de Luxe x Dark
Knight) bred and owned by
Diane Kilshaw.
Henza Chatterbox.
Tom Passmore’s Theia T2 (Cash Point
x Vangelis S) was top evening foal
(Gold 8.46). Said Tom “I have bred a
few foals over the years under the
‘Llanthony’ prefix, including the mare
‘Llanthony Valina’ by super consistent
Nations Cup jumper Vangelis S (dam
sire of Theia) and out of a little 7/8th
blood mare with a touch of Appaloosa!
Both Valina and her dam ‘Chilli’ proved
talented and brave eventers, giving me
a lot of fun before work got in the way.
I am a Head of Biology at a grammar
school in Gloucester and my partner
works for the NHS in Bath, so fitting
eventing in around our busy work lives
is a real challenge. Valina will come
back into work after weaning and do
some more ‘fun’ stuff - I’d like to aim
for 3* eventing and 1.30 BS, perhaps
some dressage too for good measure!
Theia is far more quality, injecting
the presence and movement of the
Contender/Landadel combination that
her sire, Cash Point brings. I plan to
start her myself, aim for young horse
classes and then probably see if I can
find a professional rider to take her
on up the levels. I think she has
real potential”.
Theia.
Strawberryfields Twilight (Embrujo JL
out of a mare called Esplendida CXXXV)
was top scoring sports pony. Breeder
and owner Claire Elliott said “It was a
bit of a manic day for me as we were
competing at the GB PRE show but the
Futurity were more than happy to be
accommodating if needed. Velvet (as
she is known at home) is by the stallion
Embrujo JL out of my own mare who I
was showing successfully up until last
year at 20 years young, but sadly lost
her due to injury. I’m hoping Velvet
will follow in her footsteps to success in
showing, dressage and
working equitation”
Amy Clithero’s ALC Estrellita Rosada
(Big Star x Jubileo), or “Pepper”, is her
first homebred, and secured the highest
show jumping three year old accolade,
being awarded a 9 for her jump which
improved each time she tackled the
lane. Says Amy, “Her mum is a graded
(APTO) Spanish. Over lockdown all
the shows in Wales cancelled, so I put
her in foal to hopefully make her own
replacement. She showjumped up to
1.25, which is unusual for PREs, and I
wanted another jumping horse,
“I couldn’t be happier with my day.
Pepper scored 8.7 as a foal and the vet
identified a little hoof work I needed to
do. She got stage fright as a yearling so
got a silver as she didn’t want to move!
This year I had no-one to help me, and
I was a sweaty beetroot by the time I’d
finished. It was definitely worth it for a
good Gold though. The judges scored
her jump as Elite which was very
flattering! She’s always been a really
easy, super friendly youngster, with the
occasional sass, and now my aim is to
bring her on at her own pace and see
where we go together. If we could do
some age classes and BYEH classes
that would be great but I’m in no rush”.
CVS Top Gun.
Valiente Guerrero (Tremendo XII x Neron
XII) was top dressage yearling. Bred
by Sheila Kabuki, and undergoing a
growth spurt at the moment, she scored
consistent marks across the board for a
promising Silver premium.
filly foal Adamo Diakara (Diarado x
Quasimodo VD Molendreef). Said Emily
“both our entries are out of the same
fabulous mare who is a consistent
producer and her babies have super
temperaments”. Which neatly takes us
to second top scorer, and maternal half
sibling, going home with another strong
Gold premium (8.75) - Notr’Adamo ET,
2yo eventing colt (Future Guilty Pleasure
At Aster Horses in Kent, we were
provided with a wonderful, good sized,
bright and airy venue for hire by Daniel
Watson at Fiddlers Green Stud, where he
runs a dressage, training and breeding
yard with Craig Messenger.
Here our highest scorers secured very
good Gold premiums. Both were brought
for evaluation by owner breeder Emily
Nicol. Top scorer (8.75) was eventing
Adamo Diakara.
Highest placed yearling on a Gold
premium of 8.25 was UCS Grand Deluxe
(Woodlander Grand Design x Sempatico
M) owned by Amanda Truss and bred
by United Coloured Stud. Amanda was
enthusiastic about her day “This was my
first ever Futurity evaluation and Della’s
(UCS Grand Deluxe) too. We purchased
Della from United Coloured Stud back
in November and soon realised how
much sass she had! I wondered if I’d
ever gain her trust enough to show her
in hand as my aim and direction for the
stud was in sports horses of colour and
she was the start! I postponed the first
two shows as she wasn’t ready, it took
weeks of careful preparation to get her
onto my trailer, and just as long to trot in
hand! Mum was often a pretend judge in
the school mocking up a show situation.
She was equally as unenthusiastic about
bathing, even with a bucket and sponge,
and at times I wondered if I’d ever get
her out the yard and into the ring! Calm
perseverance paid off and this year has
seen some wonderful results including
champion sports horse at South of
England, and our Gold award at Futurity
last week topped it off!”
Amanda also wanted to share
”I wasn’t entirely sure what to
expect on the day but did some
research and asked questions
beforehand so I had some idea of
what would happen. I’m so pleased
that Della behaved amazingly well and
we got such lovely comments from the
vet, judges and spectators. Della and
I have a lovely relationship now, she
means so much to me and I can’t wait
to see what the future holds for her and
our stud”.
highly scored for frame and trot, showing
good articulation in her joints.
Catherston Stud
The final venue in the first round brought
us to Catherston Stud which has been
a host venue since the Futurity began.
It isn’t unusual to see a higher number
of Elites at this venue because the stud
and its clients have a long standing
breeding programme which purposefully
breeds horses destined for international
competition.
The day’s highest Elite scorer at 9.17 was
two year old event prospect Borough
Timpenny Fiver (Timolin x Cevin Z)
owned and bred by Sally Bullen. His
dam Borough Pennyz is of course a truly
international horse in her own right, by
Cevin Z out of a mare by Dutch Gold.
Pennyz won Belton CCI4* and was placed
at Fontainebleau CCI4*, Badminton CCI5*,
Hartpury CCI3* and Malmo European
Championships immediately prior to
competing at the London 2012 Olympics.
Borough Timpenny FIver.
In conversation afterwards, owner/
breeder Sally had the following to say to
us “It certainly gave me lots of pleasure
watching him perform at Catherston and
I felt a proud owner. The Catherston Stud
team in their smart outfits worked very
hard showing the horses off for the vet
and the evaluators. It was also rewarding
having Timpenny’s 3 yr old brother there
(Borough Tennerpenny – Gold 8.69 and
highest scoring three year old) who is a
full brother, both out of Borough Pennyz,
who I bred to keep up with my Olympic
husband Michael Bullen who rode in
Rome 1960 and Tokyo 1964! Pennyz went
to the London Olympics ridden by Vittoria
Panizzon and was the best mare in the
Three Day Event and highly placed (11th).
I then felt I had caught up with my double
Olympic rider husband! Pennyz, now
retired, has bred five foals, the last being
called Borough Timpenny Fiver. She
highlights being the walk and canter,
scoring 9s for suppleness, uphill
Our third Elite was highest placed
Owner breeder Annie Makin had a good
Rock (Diarado x Lauriston) and colt Makin
Graceland (Timolin x Lauriston) who were
highest showjumping foal (Gold 8.83)
and highest eventing yearling (Gold 8.59)
respectively. Half siblings out of Jamakin
Faerie Folklaur. Said Annie ” I have
been a supporter of the British Breeding
Futurity ever since I bought Pencos Crown
Jewel as a 6-month-old foal, with one
of the deciding factors of that purchase
being her Elite score at Plumpton back
in 2009. That Elite score has certainly
been justifi ed over the years with an 11th
place at Burghley and 9th at Badminton.
Since then, everything that I have bred
has passed through Futurity. I breed on
a very small scale – maximum 2 a year
- and it’s so easy to have rose tinted
spectacles on when looking at your own
stock. I really value having the opinion
of people with way more expertise in
assessing youngstock than I do, and
my experience of Futurity has strongly
infl uenced the choices that I make in
stallion selection each year. This year
Makin Coronado Rock by Diarado and out
of a Lauriston daughter of Pencos Crown
Jewel has scored higher than of any of
my homebreds has previously which I
am delighted about! I will be running her
on as an exciting showjumping prospect.
Highest pony two year old Makin Jailbird
(Future Guilty Pleasure x Tubber Patrick),
known as Porridge, Gold 8.58, was a bit of
an indulgence, bred from my daughter’s
favourite and best Pony Club pony, so
I’m also thrilled that she has developed
the way that she has, and I hope she
goes on to have a brilliant career. She
is for sale as my daughter is long out of
ponies and grandchildren a little way off!
Makin Graceland is also for sale with high
expectations of an eventing career – his
full brother is now 4 and contesting BYEH
with a young rider”.
Timello.
Henza Doubla Agent (Dark Knight
x Parvadean Recharge) was highest
placed sports pony. This colt foal
scored a Gold of 8.54, owned and bred
by Diane Kilshaw. His highlights were
trot and canter, with evaluators noting
expression, balance, suspension
and suppleness.
