How a group is creating
safe spaces for tangata
moana in the city
• By Layla Bailey-McDowell
A COLLECTIVE is leading
a movement to connect
Christchurch tangata moana
through culture, creativity,
celebration and working to
combat the “longstanding issues
of racism” in the city.
What began as a group of
friends seeking a community has
transformed into Brown Town,
a space that nurtures the hauora
(wellbeing) of tangata moana
(people of the sea), bringing
groups together through monthly
kaupapa.
Brown Town founders Devyn
Baileh (Te Atiawa), Grace Colcord
(Malie, Afega), and Shea
Wātene (Ngā Puhi, Ngā Rauru)
recognised a “real need” for such
a space in Christchurch, and
said they were “carving space for
Tangata moana to be loud, brown
and proud”.
“We’re so over the aggression
of being brown in Ōtautahi,” the
collective said. “We know that it
exists in other places across the
motu and around the world, but
the discrimination is uniquely
strong here.”
Brown Town sprung from the
founders’ shared experiences
of exclusion and their desire to
create a sense of belonging. After
an evening spent together, they
realised the importance of having
spaces where they could connect
and be themselves.
The rōpu made a pact to meet
homes, including potlucks, games
nights, cocktail-making parties,
phone case decorating and Matariki
celebrations.
As these events increased in
popularity, they quickly outgrew
their whare, revealing a hunger for
a sense of community – especially
among rangatahi.
“We outgrew our monthly
events very quickly, in less than a
year. We all knew someone that
knew someone, and that has never
stopped,” the collective said.
The creation of Brown Town
also stemmed from the group’s
individual experiences of racism.
“We all have our own experiences
of being brown in a predominately
pākehā city,” Colcord said.
Colcord recalled a moment
when she was racially profiled
while shopping with a friend from
Auckland.
“We were accused of being
gang members or thieves . . . I
was kind of used to it, but it was
devastating for her.”
Baileh also spoke about
the “ingrained racism” she
encountered growing up in
Christchurch.
“The scary thing about racism
in Christchurch is that it’s
underlying. It’s not someone
yelling at you, but it’s always
there. I realised there were no
brown people around me at
school, no one I could turn to.”
LOUD, BROWN AND PROUD: Grace Colcord grew up in south Auckland and was “culturally
shocked” when she moved to Christchurch. Inspired by other collectives across the country,
she joined with friends Devyn Baileh and Shea Wātene to found Brown Town.
Teddies turned into mental health heroes
• By Isabella Adams
A SELWYN House pupil is
auctioning off her teddy bear
creations to support a youth
mental health charity.
Abby Wilson, 12, is doing a
passion project at school, where
she has to create something based
on her loves and something that
breaks her heart.
Abby has long had an interest in
crafting and creating, and has run
an online jewellery shop “Abby’s
Accessories” for the past two
years.
Something that breaks her
heart is mental health, specifically
seeing others struggle with it.
“I’ve always loved teddies and
having hugs with teddies.
“I did lots of research and found
that weighted teddies are really
good for well-being and I find it
really hard to see people struggle
with their well-being.”
From this she created Snuggle
Buddies, weighted teddy bears she
has made from bears donated by
the community.
Her mum, Kim Wilson, put
a post up on Facebook asking
anyone with unwanted bears to
donate them to Abby’s project.
They received between 40
and 50 bears, and Kim said
their house is now “over-run by
teddies”.
Abby makes Snuggle Buddies
by cutting a hole in the back of
the teddy, and placing socks filled
with bags of sand inside.
The size of the sand bags ranges
from 500g to 4kg depending on
the size of the teddy bear.
Once sealed back up, she accessorises
each bear with a bandana
and a fidget toy, and adds lavender
oil for a relaxing scent.
Abby will be auctioning the
bears on Trade Me, selling 5-10 at
a time.
The first auction began on Monday
to coincide with the start of
Mental Health Awareness Week.
All funds raised will be donated
to Christchurch charity
Te Tahi Youth, which provides
mental health services for young
people aged 10-24.
“I wanted to make sure that (the
charity) would benefit children
and teenagers because I know that
that’s a really big age for where
people have suicidal thoughts and
anxieties and problems with their
mental health.
“I was thinking that (Te Tahi
Youth) could be someone that
helped me if I ever have problems
like that in the future. And I
thought that it was a really good
place I should support and help.”
• Anyone wanting to
participate in the auction
can go to: tinyurl.com/
snugglenz
WELL-RESEARCHED: Abby Wilson wanted to create
something to make others feel supported and comforted
so she started Snuggle Buddies, transforming donated
teddy bears into comforting mental health aids.
Group bringing brown people together
• From page 1
Wātene, born and raised in
Christchurch, said while he spent
most of his life in he city, much
of the time it didn’t feel like
home.
“Where I do find home,
though, is with these people – we
all find home in each other.”
While racism was a global issue,
Colcord said in Christchurch
it had been enabled for so long it
had become normal.
“This can isolate brown people,
and socially exclude them to a
point where they feel like they
have no community or belonging.
It’s a gamble on our safety.
Safety of authenticity, expression,
and ambition.”
The group believed the city’s
“long and troubled history”
could be traced back to when the
first settler ships arrived.
“Only 60 years ago, Christchurch
was the capital for many
white racist groups, more than
anywhere else in New Zealand,
and the effects of this still ripple
throughout our city.”
The group said they often
thought about the mosque
shootings in 2019, and claimed it
was not by chance it occurred in
Christchurch.
“We hold that it would not
have happened if the prevalent
discrimination against our diverse
communities did not exist.”
Brown Town’s mission was
to change the narrative and
provide support for the brown
community in Christchurch.
“There’s magic when people
of the moana come together,”
Baileh said.
“Our mission is to weave
Tangata Moana communities together.
When we come together,
we feel a collective power of
belonging and authenticity.
“If we harnessed that collective
power, we’d be unstoppable.”
The group said a key message
Brown Town lived by was
Baileh’s saying: “Brown joy is
resistance.”
Wātene said he was excited
about Brown Town’s future.
“The most rewarding part so
far has been the encouragement
we’ve received from both people
we know and people we don’t.”
Through Brown Town’s mahi,
Colcord believed she was fulfilling
her ancestors’ dreams.
“I feel like I’m reconnecting
and re-indigenising, and helping
others along the way – or having
others help me.”
Baileh said while the experience
had been rewarding, it had
been healing too.
“As I connect with my community,
I feel my inner child
healing. She’d be proud of what
Brown Town has accomplished
so far.”
Brown Town’s goals for the
future included establishing its
own community hub, partnering
with like-minded organisations
and continuing to host events
VOICE: Devyn Baileh, Grace Colcord and Shea Wātene founded Brown Town with a mission to
provide support to the brown community in Christchurch.
PHOTOS: BROWN TOWN
“by and for tangata moana”.
It is also working towards
becoming a charitable trust, with
plans to finalise a board and
deed.
“Everybody has their own
story,” the collective said. “What
Brown Town wants to do is give
everybody their voice to tell it.”
The group’s message to people
interested in joining Brown
Town was “come as you are”
“There’s space for all Pacific
people here.”
Hillary award no small feat for students
STUDENTS FROM four high
schools in the Nor’West News
area have received the Duke of
Edinburgh’s Hillary award after
completing expeditions.
The programme, run by
the Joshua Foundation, gives
participants the opportunity
to engage in leisure activities
designed to offer an individual
challenge.
In order to receive their
awards, participants have to
dedicate significant time to
developing new skills, regularly
getting active, supporting the
Christchurch community
and planning, leading and
experiencing an adventurous
journey.
Students from Burnside High,
Christchurch Girls’ High, Marian
College and St Margaret’s
College received their awards at
last week’s ceremony in the city
council offices.
They were among 123 students
from Canterbury who were
presented their awards by Mayor
Phil Mauger.
Said Mauger: “The Duke
of Edinburgh’s Hillary
award ceremonies are always
significant occasions, as we
proudly celebrate Ōtautahi
rangatahi who have embraced
the challenge of the award,
risen to every occasion, and
achieved success along each step
of the journey.”
Joshua Foundation
spokesperson Chris Allan said
the purpose of the foundation
was to provide specifically
designed programmes that target
youth in the community.
“The Joshua Foundation programmes
will empower youth
to become disciplined, resourceful,
confident and self-reliant
with the emphasis placed upon
fostering initiative, building
self-esteem and developing a personal
self-belief,” he said.
The Duke of Edinburgh’s
Hillary award chief executive
Emma Brown said completing
the award was no small feat.
“It challenges you to go
beyond your comfort zone and
continuously strive, develop
and push through those tough
moments.”
Marian College students Ruby Love-
Smith, Sophie Connor and Libby
Crawford with Allan and Mauger.
Award winners sport new
styles for fashion show
PRIDE: Proud To Be award recipients Lee-Ann Waho and Penny Osborne with stylist Vicki McMillan (middle).
The third recipient, Tracey Buunk, was overseas. More than 400 people attended the Fashion Forecast and
Proud to Be awards last week.
• By Isabella Adams
THREE HORNBY women
got a style makeover, thanks
to an initiative recognising
service to the community.
The Fashion Forecast and
Proud to Be awards have been
held every year at The Hub
Hornby since 2019.
The Hub Hornby senior
centre manager Jason
Marsden said the Proud
to Be initiative was started
to celebrate those in the
community who work behind
the scenes in Hornby.
“Proud to Be is all about
pride in the community
and pride in who they are,
through their own journey
and what they do.
“It’s a really broad base.
Anyone can be nominated for
anything,” said Marsden.
Dozens of greater Hornby
residents were nominated
for the awards, with three
selected as recipients.
They were Tracey Buunk
from 126 On The Corner,
Penny Osborne from Gilberthorpe
School and The
Hub’s Christmas gift wrapping,
and Le-Anne Waho
from Gilberthorpe School.
The women were awarded
a style makeover with stylist
Vicki McMillan and the
opportunity to walk down the
runway at the show.
Buunk did her reveal
virtually as she was overseas.
About 10 of the hub’s
retailers participated in the
event on Thursday, including
Stirling Sports, Cotton On
Body, and Pagani.
The hub staff, retail
partners, management team
and customers were in the
line-up of models for the
show, which more than 400
people attended.
All of the funds raised went
to Christchurch charity Dress
Dress for Success supports
women to find and keep
What’s new in Term 4 at Risingholme?
As the year slowly winds down,
Risingholme’s course programme
continues to ramp up with a suite
of new courses and a workshop
set to start in Term 4. For those
who like to keep their hands
busy crafting, the new ‘Art of
Smocking’ course will equip you
with the skills and knowledge that
underpin this traditional form of
embroidery. You’ll learn to make
smocked decorations and heirloom
clothing for babies and children
in your family or even pamper
yourself. Over this 8-week course
participants will practice the
basic smocking stitches and have
completed a reference sampler as
well as a small
project to take
home. It caters
to the absolute
novice who has an
interest in learning
to smock as well as
those who want to
refresh a skill not
used for some time.
Also added to
the programme are
four new wellnessbased
courses led
by tutor and mental
fitness consultant,
Sahera Laing.
‘Grasping Anxiety’
is a course
designed
to help
those with
generalised anxiety to
understand what, how, and
why of the anxiety cycle.
Starting with the basics,
course participants will be
introduced to strategies
that can be easily applied to
manage anxiety. Continuing
a focus on self-awareness,
‘Me Time for Women’
and ‘Self-Hypnosis for
Relaxation and Results’ are
two courses designed to
help bring intention into
your life through small and
actionable steps that enable
you to let go of old habits,
embrace new ones, and focus on
carving out time to check in with
yourself.
The final course, ‘Relational
Relationships’ will set you on the
path to developing your ability
to communicate better, grow
relationships, and understand
your needs and the needs of those
around you – essential skills to have
in today’s connected world.
Make the jump into learning
something new and enrol today.
Enrolments are open 24/7 on
Risingholme’s website and
look out for the 2025 course
programme launching later this
year in December.
Hearty dinner and a tasty sweet treat
Use greens and
beans as a base for a
warming, thrifty dinner,
and nuts and seeds as
a good addition to the
biscuit tin, suggests
Nigel Slater
Bean and rainbow
chard soup
Sitting somewhere between soup
and stew, this a base recipe to add
different beans and greens to.
Swap the borlotti for haricot
or cannellini, chickpeas or pinto
beans, depending on what is in
the cupboard.
Stir in spinach or cavolo nero
leaves at the end if you prefer
or if your chard leaves aren’t as
perky as their stems.
If you are making the soup for
the following day, introduce the
leaves when you reheat it, just
before you eat.
Ingredients
Serves 6
1 onion, medium sized
2 stalks celery
2 Tbsp olive oil, plus extra to
finish
150g rainbow chard stems
3 cloves of garlic
6 bushy stems of thyme
2×400g cans of tomatoes (whole
or chopped)
1×400g tin of borlotti beans
1×400g black-eyed beans
200g rainbow chard leaves
Method
• Peel and roughly chop the onion.
Finely dice the celery.
Warm the olive oil in a deep,
heavy-based pan and add the
onion and celery, letting them
cook over a moderate heat.
• Cut the chard stems into small
dice and stir into the onions.
• Peel and finely slice the garlic.
• It should be almost thin enough
to see through.
• Strip the leaves from the thyme
then stir into the onion mixture
with the garlic.
• When the onions are translucent
and the aromatics are fragrant,
add the tomatoes and their juice
together with 2 cans of water.
• Bring to the boil, then stir in the
beans, rinsed of their canning
liquid (if you are using bottled
beans however, I suggest you stir
their liquid in as it adds a silky
texture to the soup.)
• Season with black pepper and
salt and continue cooking at low
simmer for about 20 minutes,
stirring occasionally.
• Wash the chard leaves and cut
them into wide strips, then add to
the hot soup.
• Leave for a couple of minutes to
soften then ladle the into bowls.
• Trickle over olive oil to serve.
Sesame, date and
pistachio bars
A good one for the biscuit tin,
staying in good condition for
several days.
I treat these as tiny energy bars.
You can veganise the recipe by
using date syrup in place of the
honey and a suitable substitute for
the chocolate. And don’t feel you
have to include pistachios; you can
use hazelnut or almonds instead.
Ingredients
Makes 18 small bars
125g pistachios
100g salted, roasted peanuts
275g soft dried dates
125g rolled oats
1 tsp vanilla extract
3 Tbsp thick honey
2 Tbsp roasted sesame paste
2 Tbsp sesame seeds
200g dark chocolate
Method
• Preheat the oven to 180°C.
Line a 20cm square cake tin
with kitchen parchment.
• Process the pistachios, peanuts
and dates in a food processor
to a thick paste. Make sure you
do not over-process the mixture
and make it into to a purée. Stir
in the oats.
• Warm vanilla extract, honey
and sesame paste in a small pan
over medium heat.
• As soon as bubbling lightly stir
into the date and nut mixture.
• Spoon into the lined cake tin,
smooth the surface, pushing
down firmly, but not so hard
you compact the mixture.
• Sprinkle it with the sesame
seeds.
• Bake for 20 minutes then
remove and set aside to cool in
its tin.
• Break the chocolate into small
pieces and melt in a heatproof
mixing bowl balanced over a
pan of simmering water.
• Don’t stir the chocolate until
it is almost entirely melted, and
then only gently.
• Lift the block of sesame
biscuits out of the tin and cut
into 18 short rectangles.
• Dip each sesame slice into the
melted chocolate, covering half
the biscuit.
• Lay each on a piece of baking
paper and scatter crushed
pistachios over the top if you
wish, then let the chocolate set.
• If the room is warm, then you
might want to chill them briefly
in the fridge.
