Online dater’s warning
to others after dispute

GRANT PAYNE hoped to
find companionship through
an over-50s dating site, but
instead he got a German debt
collection agency demanding
payment after he tried to end his
membership.
He now wants to discourage
others from using the site.
The 70-year-old from Diamond
Harbour signed up for
singles50.co.nz in August last
year after a difficult period
when he separated from his
long-term partner and was
diagnosed with bowel cancer.
After undergoing surgery, the
cancer was removed.
“I was still on medication and
still stitched up. I was waiting at
home to recover so I thought I
might as well have a look at who
I could meet,” said Payne.
After paying what he thought
was $57.55 for a one month membership,
Payne said he checked
his bank statement and found he
had been charged $345.30 for a
six-month membership.
“I probably should have been
more careful and read the fine
print closer.
“When I saw how much had
been charged I thought ‘I never
approved that.’ I wasn’t in much
of a position financially to make
that kind of payment.”
Accepting he was stuck with
the membership, Payne used
the site and went on a handful
of dates.
“I met a couple of nice
people, but it wasn’t really
going anywhere.”
He then tried to cancel the
paid membership using a
chatbot on the website before
the subscription renewed, but
found he missed reading a
clause in the terms of service.

In the fine print on the
payment screen it states sixmonth
memberships have to
be cancelled “at least 4 weeks
before the renewal”.
“They’re making it as difficult
as possible for you to pull out of
the membership,” said Payne.

PORT HILLS residents are
disappointed a Fire and
Emergency NZ investigation
could not identify what started
the blaze in February.
Fenz has released its report into
the fire more than seven months
after it started on February 14.
The inferno triggered a major
operation involving more than
100 firefighters, 15 helicopters and
30 engines.
The Fenz report found the blaze
started on a private property
about 50 metres from Worsleys
Rd.
But it could not say how the fire
broke out, with no equipment or
activities on the land the day it
started.
Hundreds of homes had to be
evacuated, and the city council
and Selwyn District Council
declared a state of emergency
which lasted for a week.
The owner of a container home
destroyed in the blaze, Anna
Spark, said she was disappointed
there were not more answers in
the report.

Balancing act ‘unenviable’ as
rates for 2025/26 discussed

want to see a balanced approach
between delivering services and a
lower rates increase in next year’s
annual plan.
City councillors have started
discussing whether the anticipated
8.45 per cent rates increase
in the Annual Plan 2025/26 will
need to be tweaked due to pressures
from higher than expected
inflation.
The projected rates increase
is slightly lower than this year’s
9.9 per cent
increase.

He believes any rates increase
under 10 per cent will be acceptable

The first public briefing
discussing rates in the annual
plan was on Tuesday, where city
councillors got an overview of
the council’s financial situation.
“The annual plan is where
we check in, make sure we’re
on track, and make any tweaks
based on any factors that have
changed in the previous months
– things such as inflation levels
or unanticipated projects the
council needs to take on,” said
city council general manager
finance, risk and performance

The draft annual plan is
scheduled to be adopted on
February 13 and go out for
consultation before the final
annual plan is adopted in June.

Tsunami
sirens to
be tested
AS THE clocks move forward
for daylight saving, the tsunami
sirens along the coastline will
undergo routine testing at 11am
on Sunday.
The 45 sirens located between
Brooklands and Taylors Mistake
will sound for up to three
minutes.
“Residents living near the
coast don’t need to evacuate or
be alarmed by the sirens, this is
just a test to make sure the system
is working,” said city council
civil defence and emergency
management spokesperson
Brenden Winder.
The tsunami warning
network is designed to trigger
an advanced warning of a distance-source
tsunami that could
take more than three hours to
reach the coastline.
Winder said while this weekend
is just a routine test, it is
also an ideal time to make sure
coastal residents have an evaculation
plan in place, should a
tsunami occur.

map to find out if they live or
work in a tsunami evacuation

was so, yeah, I guess I’m a little
disappointed but I’ve also moved
quite far past it now,” Spark said.
The report stated the cause of
the fire could not be proven to
an acceptable level of certainty
so it was classified as “undetermined”.
Dominique Leeming has fled
her home twice in seven years
due to wildfires on the hills. She
said while there did appear to be
lessons in the report, she is still
worried.
“I’m concerned that with
ongoing climate change and
climate warming . . . any
replacement of that fuel loads
on the Port Hills, there’s lots of
talk in the report about relative
to humidity and these types of
technical things.
“I think it’s not going to
become less of a risk. It’s going to
become an increasing risk,” she
said.
Leeming said residents are
planting native bushes and trees
to try and make the environment
less flammable.
“Right along the Port Hills,
private people, some of our
neighbours not too far away,
have been spending a lot of time

make us vulnerable every year.”
Prebble said reducing the fuel
sources needed to be a priority.
“I think we do need to look at
some fuel reduction practices,
whether it’s looking at clearing
certain areas, maybe establishing
some further fire breaks in really
vulnerable places, that could be a
strategy,” he said.
The report said a combination
of dry weather, low moisture
content and a continuously
available fuel supply on the hills
helped the fire ignite and spread.

Payne felt he had been misled
by the site’s cancellation policy,
which he had not noticed
anywhere else on the website.
He stopped the payment from
going through by cancelling it
with his bank.
Payne then received a letter in
June from T&D Rechtsanwälte
GbR, a German debt collecting
agency, demanding he pay about
$1100 which included unpaid
membership costs and legal
fees.
He received another letter from
the firm on August 21 demanding
the same payment.
“It’s taken a toll on my mental
health. I’ve woken up in the
middle of the night wondering
how I’m going to get out of this,”
he said.
A Consumer NZ spokesperson
encouraged Payne and others
in his situation to write back to
the debt collector and dispute
the debt with their reasons for
finding the membership terms
unfair.
“If Singles50 or the debt recovery
agency continues to pursue
him, he could file a claim with
the Disputes Tribunal.”
The spokesperson said people
should be “confident they understand
the costs and the terms
and conditions they are signing
up to”.
“Having said that, businesses
can’t mislead people and terms
and conditions must be fair.”
Payne said he is awaiting legal
advice before he takes further
action.
He hopes to put the word out
for online users to be careful
what they sign up for.

Next phase of park
revamp under way
THE REVAMP of Lyttelton’s
Naval Point – Te Nukutai o Tapoa
has moved into a new phase with
work under way on changing
facilities at the recreation
grounds.
The new $1.2 million
building will sit next to the
redeveloped sports fields
and will take about eight
months to complete, said
city council head of parks
Rupert Bool.
“Netball, football, futsal,
basketball and rugby
teams all use the recreation
grounds, as well as visitors to the
marina. New bathrooms and
changing facilities will be a great
asset for the whole community,”
said Bool.
AERIAL SPRAYING of spur
valerian will take place on the
coastal cliffs and rock outcrops
over the next few months.
The spur valerian plant produces
a lot of wind spread seeds and
can quickly form dense strands,
shading out other plants.
The perennial is a serious
threat to rare native plants found
on rocky outcrops and cliffs
around Banks Peninsula, on the
Rupert
Bool
Contracting firm Watts and
Hughes will undertake the work.
The changing facilities
project follows the addition of
a multi-sport zone and
redevelopment of the two
existing grass sports fields
over the last year.
“The multi-sport zone is
almost finished. The last
step is adding a design to
the hard courts.
“An artist from
Te Hapū o Ngāti
Wheke Rāpaki is developing
the design, which
will tie in with the nearby artwork
along the water’s edge,” Bool said.
The city council will also add
landscaping and seating around
the changing facilities.
Plant spraying starts soon
Port Hills and inland.
Spraying will occur on the
coastal cliffs between Pigeon
Bay and Le Bons Bay, and rock
outcrops around Ohinetahi,
Orongomai and Rapaki.
It will start on Tuesday,
October 1, and end on Friday,
December 13, and will take place
on suitable weather days.
The chemical to be applied is
Grazon at a rate of 5L/ha.
Quinn’s Journey: From Fear to Calm at Kōwhai Vet Clinic
For many pets and their owners, the
thought of a trip to the vets can be a
daunting prospect. This was especially
true for Quinn, a much loved dog
with a gentle but cautious nature,
who, having had some traumatic
experiences in the past, had become
very wary of visiting the vets, causing
distress to herself and her owner.
When Quinn first came to Kōwhai Vet
Clinic, her anxiety was clearly evident.
She would hesitantly enter the waiting
room, only to make a quick round of
sniffs before heading right back to
the door, eager to leave. Sensing her
discomfort, we knew it would take
time, patience, and care to help her
feel at ease. Fortunately for Quinn,
her dedicated owner was equally
committed to improving Quinn’s
experience and reducing her anxiety
around future vet visits.
We started doing regular ‘Happy Visits’ for Quinn.
These visits involved regular, low-pressure trips to the
clinic, where there was no expectation of any medical
procedure. Instead, it was all about letting Quinn get
comfortable with the environment and our staff. During
those initial visits, Quinn wasn’t quite ready for pats or
close interactions, but slowly, things began to change.
With gentle encouragement, time to explore, and lots
of delicious treats offered at her own
pace, Quinn’s confidence began to
grow.
At home, her owner also put in
tremendous effort, practicing
cooperative care training. Using
creative props like a toy stethoscope
to hold against her chest and a
pen to simulate injections, Quinn
became accustomed to being
touched and handled in ways that
would be necessary during vet visits.
This ongoing training made a big
difference, helping Quinn learn that
being handled wasn’t something to be
afraid of.
Over time, Quinn’s progress has been
truly heartwarming. She now enters
the clinic willingly, tail wagging, and
greets the team for pats and treats.
Though she’s still a little unsure during full physical
exams, there has been a noticeable improvement in
what she will comfortably allow us to do. When we
know we need to achieve a particular outcome (e.g.
vaccinations), her owner administers prescribed
anti-anxiety medication beforehand, ensuring that
Quinn remains calm and relaxed throughout the
visit. This collaborative approach has meant that
Quinn’s relationship with her veterinary care team has
transformed remarkably.
Quinn’s journey showcases what’s possible when we
prioritise a pet’s emotional wellbeing, and we couldn’t
be more proud of her progress. Her owner’s dedication,
combined with our clinic’s fear-free philosophy, has
turned once-stressful vet visits into a calm, positive
experience for everyone involved.

the estuary for their summer stay.
Pupils celebrate godwits’ return
The Avon-Heathcote Estuary Ihutai Trust
has hosted the annual “Farewell to the
Godwits” ceremony in March for the
past 25 years, to wish the godwits a safe
journey to their breeding grounds in
Alaska.
“Just as important, and even more exciting
is when September comes around and
we are waiting with anticipation for the safe
return of the godwits to spend summer here
with us,” said trust manager Tanya Jenkins.
A non-stop flight taking eight days and
covering 12,000km in all kinds of weather is
an amazing feat for such small birds.
In mid-September, the first 434 godwits
safely landed at the estuary, and the trust is
hoping to see another 1100 arrive over the
next few weeks.
Te Raekura Redcliffs School science
teacher Mandy Monteith was keen to teach
her pupils about the estuary’s birds and
after speaking to the trust, it was agreed the
godwits deserved a special welcome.
As a result, year 7 and 8 pupils held a
ceremony with representatives from Redcliffs
Residents Association, Birds NZ, the
Estuary Trust and Mt Pleasant Community
Centre in attendance.
Pupils prepared a display of painted
wooden godwit cutouts, performed a
karakia and a godwit song and spoke to the
guests about what they had learned about
the returning birds.
“We are so proud of having the godwits
come here every year,” Monteith said.
“For the students, to study the birds has a
strong science focus and encourages them
to be the kaitiaki of the estuary and all that
lives in there.”

New film that captures architects’
partnership a ‘love letter’ to city

MAURICE AND I is an
unexpectedly moving, delightful,
and at times harrowing look
at the enduring partnership
between architects Sir Miles
Warren and Maurice Mahoney,
and the creation and saving of
the Christchurch Town Hall.
Currently in cinemas across
New Zealand, the documentary
has broken box office records in
Christchurch and been accepted
into the Rotterdam Film Festival
of Architecture.
Co-director, producer and
writer Rick Harvie had been
making a short documentary
about the refurbishment of the
town hall and during his interviews,
Warren kept saying “Maurice
and I”, leading Harvie to
realise perhaps there was another
story to be told.
Harvie met casting director
and producer Jane Mahoney a
few years later and told her about
the idea to create a documentary
about Warren and Mahoney, who
is her father.
The first part of the film looks
at the friendship and meeting of
the two architects. Hailing from
vastly different backgrounds,
Warren attended private school
Medbury before Christ’s College,
while Mahoney grew up in a
working class family in East
London. His family arrived
in New Zealand when he was
10-years-old.
The two met and became
friends at 16. Each went their
separate ways after school,
training and working under
different mentors.
Warren is credited with introducing
modernism and brutalist
architecture to Christchurch
after living and working in London.
The Dorset St flats were the
first example of this style.
In 1958, the two formed what
would become a lasting and
successful working relationship,
with their first collaboration
being the Dental Nurses Training
School in 1958 on Colombo St.
Today, Warren and Mahoney
is spread globally across seven
locations and employs more
than 350 people.
Known simply as “Uncle Miles”
to Jane and her siblings when
they were younger, they would
see him at the annual Christmas
picnic. During school holidays in
high school Jane would work at
the office in the printing room or
be “annoying the secretaries and
taking tea up to Sir Miles, which
was always nerve-wracking
experience”.
It’s clear from the documentary
they had a huge respect for each
other from the start, and a clear
understanding of what skills the
other brings to the table. Mahoney
was an incredible stickler

“It’s the classic ‘yingyang’
scenario – finishing each other’s
sentences and picking up where
the other one left off. I guess
that’s the way they worked as
well,” said Harvie.
“Miles would be able to sell the
idea and Maurice would follow
through with the details.”
Mahoney died in 2018 and
Warren in 2022.
As the documentary progresses,
the town hall enters the film.
After pitching for the commission,
Warren and Mahoney’s design
was selected from 58 entries
in 1965. It was completed in 1972.
Acoustic advisor and consultant
for the project, Sir
Harold Marshall, recognised
‘laterally-reflected’ sound played
an important role in successful
hall acoustics. Acoustic reflectors
within the space would identify
‘hot-spots’ and correct sound
levels through the use of sound
absorbing materials. The town
hall was an acoustic triumph, a
ground-breaking design that became
recognised internationally.
“It really set a new benchmark
and set the course of concert
design on a new path. It was

remarkable really,” said Jane.
But then the earthquakes hit in
2010 and 2011.
Warren and Mahoney saw a
large proportion of their life’s
work damaged or devastated, and
ultimately demolished.
At this point, the film becomes
a love letter to the city of
Christchurch, the recognition of
its modernist heritage and a fight
to save the town hall.
The film is also a love letter
from a daughter to a father. As
for Harvie, being born the same
year the town hall opened, he
says the building has been a large
part of his and other people’s
lives.
“I’ve always loved that building
and that’s why this film came
about. It’s always been a part of
my life.
“As a civic building, it’s
amazing. The importance of
keeping a building like this is also
keeping memories alive. When
you’ve lost so many buildings
that triggered memories, you
want to hold onto the good ones.”

Successful coach turns his love for
teaching into rugby league results

College’s rugby league titlewinning
head coach Andrew
Auimatagi is a man with his
fingers in many sporting pies.
Auimatagi, 40, has been in
charge of St Thomas’ league side
since he started working at the
school in 2011 and oversaw their
second consecutive national
secondary schools title this year.
He is also assistant coach
for the school’s first XV rugby
side, who finished fifth in the
premiership this year, and is
president at the Linwood Keas
rugby league club, who have
won seven of the last nine
premierships.
But he said St Thomas’ journey
to the top of schoolboy rugby
league was “right up there” with
his proudest achievements.
“It’s something we’ve been
trying to build towards for a few
years, so to get the performance
we’re after is pretty rewarding.”
The school had a league team
in years prior but participation
boomed after Auimatagi joined
the staff.
“Ultimately, if the teachers are
passionate and leading sports,
usually the boys will get behind it
if there’s that drive and support,”
he said.

“A couple of other teachers that
were there at the school, they were
right in behind rugby league also.”
Their first foray into a national
competition came in 2013 when
they entered the development
tournament – losing to Rotorua
Boys’ High School in the final –
before entering again in 2015, this
time losing to Wesley College at
the same stage.
Since 2016 they’ve played
in the national premiership, a
competition which had been won
by Auckland schools for 23 years
before St Thomas broke the streak
last year.
The majority of the current
squad balances their league duties
with rugby union. Auimatagi said
18 of the 20 boys who travelled to
Auckland for the nationals played
in St Thomas’ first or second XV
this year.
It was “special” to be able to
offer both sports to students, he
said.

want to do everything.
“Sometimes you do need to
pull them back a bit, we’re really
conscious of the support that’s
required for them, factoring in
loading and recovery, but I think
we’ve got it right most of the
time.”
Auimatagi played both union
and league in his younger days
but his heart was always set on
the 13-man code.
A talented back rower/hooker
in his day, Auimatagi made
New Zealand age-group league
teams from 14s to 18s, and at 18
was a part of the Junior Kiwis in
2002 – taking on the Australian
Institute of Sport, made up of the
best young Australian players
from outside the NRL.
Auimatagi’s side won 56-10
in a match that served as the
curtain-raiser to a game between
the Kiwis and Kangaroos – a
moment he described as his
proudest achievement as a player.
He was on the radar of NRL
scouts, and in 2004 had trials
with the Parramatta Eels.
“We went close to maybe securing
a reserve grade contract,”
he said.
“But in the end it didn’t work
out and I came back to finish my
degree and went from there.
“I came back from Parra
and then made my debut for
the Canterbury Bulls that
year, played for New Zealand
Residents that year, so I guess
the dream was still alive. Things
could have still eventuated.
“They didn’t, but I enjoyed my
time playing for the Bulls for a
few years.”
Auimatagi has a huge amount
of experience coaching league
in both juniors and seniors – a
quick glance at his CV shows
the Canterbury Bulls, Linwood
Keas, and New Zealand
secondary schools, under-16s
and under-18s in addition to St
Thomas.
As a teacher, he said his job is
similar to his coaching duties.
“I’ve always loved working
with young people and seeing
them develop and grow, I guess
that’s how I landed in teaching.
“And I just love working in
teams, so I guess coaching, it
was natural for me to want to do
that.”
His coaching career started in
2007 when a torn achilles saw
him consigned to the sidelines,
so he offered to coach the
Keas’ reserve grade side to stay
involved in rugby league – the
team won their competition that
season.
He started coaching the Keas
premier side in 2012, initially
as a player-coach before giving
that up in 2016 to just focus on
coaching.
Under his tutelage the
Keas won four consecutive
premierships, with Aumatangi
saying the last of those was his
best memory as a coach.
“Making some history there
with our fourth straight grand
final win, and that day our
reserves and our women won
as well, so it was a pretty special
day.”
He’s been on the board at
Linwood since 2020 and was
nominated for president this
year – a role he said he took on
reluctantly at first.
“I’m not big on titles like that.
We’ve got a really awesome team
of directors and we all have
strings across the board, so it’s
more of a team-led club that we
have.
“I guess it’s more just being
a voice for our club and
community at the president’s
table and work closely with
Canterbury Rugby League to
support the growth of our game
and advocate for Linwood.”

Peppy hybrid hatch the best Yaris yet
A GOOD EXAMPLE of SUVs
being hot and hatches not is the
Toyota Yaris.
It’s a funky five-door hatch,
that hardly gets a sales look-in
against its SUV sibling the Yaris
Cross – with its impressive sales
and popularity, it should be
delighted not cross!
The current Yaris is now four
years old, but is considered
the biggest transformation in
decades for the dull, but utterly
dependable Yaris. Some even
described it as a quantum leap in
refinement and technology over
its predecessors.
Cheap and cheerful mini
hatches are pretty much gone
with very few to be had south of
$25k these days.
Among the exceptions, are the
aging, and soon-to-be replaced
MG3, while a newer and more
sophisticated Suzuki Swift still
sneaks under the $25K barrier.
The starting point for a Yaris is
well north of that figure starting
at $32,190 for the GX. From
there it’s a bit of financial stretch,
so you will need to limber up
your bank balance to find the
$38,390 to slide behind the
wheel of high-spec ZR version

can nudge that figure close to
$40k if you include the optional
smart looking $1k two-tone roof.
Toyota’s prices are all driveaway
and should be factored into
your calculations when making
price comparisons with other
models.
Today’s two model Yaris fivedoor
hatch stable, like most of
the Toyota NZ passenger car
range is all hybrid. Originally
released here with a price leading
perky 1.5-litre 3-cylinder petrol
engine, this has been culled from
the catalogue.
The current Yaris was new
from the ground up when
launched in 2020 and the most
premium-orientated small
car ever built by Toyota, not a
rehash of earlier models. The
end product is a fun to drive
mini hatch, that’s cheap to run
and packed with the latest safety
technology.
Toyota know hybrid petrolelectric
vehicles inside out
and apply of lot of innovation
to their hybrid technology to
stay comfortably ahead of the
chasing pack.
If you decide to put your hardearned
new car buying cash on a
Yaris, its reassuring to know the
current model is the beneficiary
of 25 years of hybrid vehicle
research and development by
Toyota. It was one of the first
compact Toyota models based
on the company’s new Global
Architecture B platform, with
improved body rigidity, vehicle
stability with less noise and
vibration.
If you’re serious about
reducing your carbon footprint
by driving something clean
and green, the distinctive Yaris
hybrid makes a compelling case
with a super low CO2 engine
emission figure of just 76g/
km. The 1.5-litre three-cylinder
petrol-electric hybrid system
has a combined power output of
85kW.
Collectively, this combo does a
fine job. In urban motoring the
hybrid has amazingly low engine
noise levels. You can almost
hear a pin drop in the cabin
when it’s running in electriconly
mode and it does this for
extended periods on reasonably
flat terrain.
It switches seamlessly between
its double life of petrol and
electric and back again, a credit
to an advanced and effective
lithium-ion battery and electric
motor set-up. I noticed the
hybrid seemed to work harder
when faced with energy draining

hill climbs, and isn’t as spritely
as it would be during hill-free
driving.
This compact five-door
hatch is happiest in the urban
motoring environment it was
designed for.
Going beyond the city limits
pushes it and the driver out of
their comfort zones. Longer
open road trips are doable and
the test car proved comfortable
enough on a 200km open roadie.
However, being a super
compact hatch you don’t arrive at
your destination as refreshed and
relaxed as you would in a bigger
vehicle.
A direct, and it is, shift
CVT (continuously variable
transmission) is a purpose-built
electronically controlled gearbox,
tuned for the gear shifting
efficiency needed to deliver on
its claimed 3.5L/100km fuel
economy.
Achieving this level of
economy requires a small tradeoff
in performance, although this
is achieved without scuppering
Toyota’s efforts to at least provide
a handy turn of pace when
required.
Quality, fashionable materials
are not what you typically find
in a mini hatch for the masses
like the Yaris, nor the climate
control air conditioning, smart
entry with push button start,
digital speedometer and head-up
display.
If a roomy cabin and a decent
size rear hatch is on your list,
then you won’t find it here.
Instead it’s a tight four-seater
for those who don’t travel with a
lot of luggage. However, Toyota
does deserve a smidgen of credit
for the effort made to provide
an abundance of passenger
compartment storage areas.
Connectivity is well sorted
on all fronts, with a multimedia
system incorporating a seveninch
touchscreen display and
full smartphone integration
including Apple CarPlay and
Android Auto.
The Yaris ZR front foots
safety every step of the way
with Toyota’s excellent Safety
Sense package, with this model
a trailblazer in the mini hatch
segment, being among the first
fitted with front seat centre aisle
airbags. These reduce the risk of
the driver and front passenger
colliding during a side-on
impact.
These innovations in car of this
size underlines the huge safety
advances in small car design in
the last five years with the Yaris
one of the leading lights.
Almost every element of this
vehicle is executed with precision,
but that’s something Toyota has
always done better than most.
This is the best riding and
handling Yaris yet. Balanced,
nimble, and with deep reserves
of grip on even the poorest road
surfaces, ensure an action packed
drive over twisty terrain.
The steering is engaging with
just the right amount of road feel
and weighting, to quickly gain
the confidence of the driver, and
it is so easy to limbo into and out
of the tightest parking spots.
