THE TERRACE MOSELLE -
BREATHTAKINGLY BEAUTIFUL
Terraced vineyards in a unique river landscape
From Zell to the river mouth in Koblenz, the Moselle Valley
becomes increasingly narrow, with the vineyards rising to
dizzying heights. Often, the slopes are so steep that the vines
can only be planted on narrow terraces, supported by dry stone
walls, which give the Lower Moselle its distinctive name.
The terraces built by human hands over centuries, such as those
in Winningen, are an impressive cultural monument. Even though
monorail systems now make their daily work easier, most tasks
still have to be done by hand. Between the wine villages of
Bremm and Ediger-Eller lies the steepest vineyard in Europe,
the Calmont.
Not only can winemaking be experienced up close, but the
terraced landscapes also offer interesting discoveries for
nature enthusiasts. The rocks and dry stone walls with their
warm microclimate provide a habitat for rare animals such as
the Apollo butterfly, the emerald lizard, and the rock bunting.
The re-cultivation of vineyards on the steepest slopes and the
focus on terroir-driven Riesling wines have given the region new
momentum in recent years.
THE GRAPE VARIETIES
Varietal diversity of the vines
Riesling | Known as the "Queen of White Grapes," Riesling has
been cultivated in the Moselle, Saar, and Ruwer regions since the
Middle Ages. The grapes ripen late and produce fine, lively, and
elegant wines, whose origin—referred to as terroir—is reflected
in their character like no other white grape variety. The versatile
Riesling produces wines of all sweetness levels and quality grades:
from fine, off-dry quality wine to mineral-dry premium wines,
from fruity-light Kabinett to noble sweet ice wine.
Müller-Thurgau (Rivaner) | This cross between Riesling and Madeleine
Royale is the second most important grape variety in the
region. Its acidity is less pronounced, producing mild wines. When
made dry or semi-dry, it is also referred to as Rivaner. It then exhibits
fresh, fruity, and herbal aromas, pairs well with light cuisine,
and is often enjoyed as a summer wine.
Weißer Burgunder (Pinot blanc) | The name already suggests its
origin from Burgundy and its descent from Spätburgunder. This
grape variety, also known as Weißburgunder and Pinot blanc, is
gaining popularity and provides a wonderful alternative to Riesling.
Weißburgunder, whether light and summery or rich in content, with
fine fruit flavors, pairs very well with many dishes and is excellent
as a summer wine.
Blauer Spätburgunder (Pinot noir) | This grape is one of the
noblest red wine grapes in the world. The grapes produce fruity,
elegant, and complex red wines. Since the late 1980s, many winemakers
have revived the old red wine tradition of the Moselle. This
grape variety, also known as Spätburgunder or Pinot noir, grows
well on slate soils and is also aged in barriques.
Dornfelder | This relatively young cross between Helfensteiner and
Heroldrebe has become an important grape variety in Germany. It
produces strong, tannin-rich wines with an intense black-red color,
which pair well with a festive roast.
5
THE TASTE OF THE WINE
From the first sip to the last
„dry“ | The residual sugar content of a dry wine ranges from
0-9g/l, but it must not exceed the existing acid content by more
than 2g/l.
„off-dry“ | The residual sugar content of an off-dry wine follows that
of a dry wine, ranging from 9 to a maximum of 18g/l. Again, acidity
plays a role, as the acid value must not exceed the residual sugar
content by more than 10g/l.
„feinherb“ (medium dry) | According to wine regulations, there is no
prescribed limit for feinherb; it is essentially an intermediate stage.
Typically, wines labeled as feinherb have a residual sugar content
ranging from 15-25g/l.
„semi-sweet“ | Here, the residual sugar content ranges from
18-45g/l, giving the wines a distinctly sweet taste.
„sweet“ | These noble sweet wine specialties have a residual sugar
content above 45g/l with no upper limit.
GRAPE HARVEST
The harvest season is undoubtedly the most exciting moment
for the winemaker. It is then decided whether all the effort put
into tending the vineyard will be rewarded with a successful
wine. When the grapes are ready for harvest mainly depends on
the grape variety and the weather. Ultimately, the winemaker
determines the timing when the grapes make their way to the
cellar. He assesses the weather risk and plans which wine he
wants to press and when. On the one hand, a wine generally
improves the longer the plant has to nurture the grapes. On
the other hand, a sudden frost or a rainy period can damage
the grapes. The harvest season in the Moselle region lasts from
the end of September to mid/end of October. From then on,
"Federweißer" can be enjoyed in the seasonal wine taverns,
also with a piece of onion tart.

HIGHLIGHTS OF BIODIVERSITY
in the Moselle Wine Region
Over the years, a collection of expertly described "highlights"
has been created, showcasing the special richness of
characteristic habitats, animal and plant species — they are
our treasure chests of the wine-cultural landscape.
Lehmener Würzlay – Heart of Razejungewingert
The great biological diversity of the Lehmener Würzlay
is concentrated like light in a magnifying glass in the
Razejungewingert. The presence of extremely rare species from
different animal groups, such as the red-winged grasshopper,
the Apollo butterfly, or the honey buzzard, is record-breaking.
The commitment of the Lehmer Razejungen to the preservation
and further development of this wonderful cultural landscape
is also remarkable.
10
Koberner Schlossberg
The prominent mountain spur is brimming with cultural and
historical monuments and an impressive variety of warmthloving
plant and animal species. The famous Matthias Chapel,
the endangered red-winged grasshopper, and the ortolan
bunting, as well as many protected biotopes, represent a true
highlight of biodiversity related to the "Schloss-Berge" (Palace
mountains).
Winningen Vineyard Terraces
The vineyard terraces around Winningen are the most extensive
in the entire Moselle region. Up to 29 stacked terraces and
many kilometers of dry stone walls crisscross the vineyards.
Particularly impressive are the 130 arches and the 600 scissor
stair steps embedded in the walls. Besides their cultural
and historical significance, the Moselle slopes also provide a
habitat for special and rare animal species such as the Apollo
butterfly, the emerald lizard, and the eagle owl.
WeinWetterWeg Hatzenport
The "WineWeatherTrail" extends between the striking rock
groups from Kreuzlay, past the old St. Johanniskirche (St. John’s
Church) with its herb garden, to Rabenlay. The trail offers not
only a great opportunity to enjoy the wine-cultural landscape
but is also a true hotspot of biodiversity. Experience on a hike
the unique mix of rock formations, cultivated vineyards, and
vineyard terraces with dry stone walls.
Further information, pictures, and the respective videos
about the highlights can be found at
