Jim O’Brien celebrates 18 years at Topsfield Fair
BY ADAM LEVINE
PEABODY — Whether its
at the Topsfield Fairgrounds or
Brooksby Farm, lifetime Peabody
resident Jim O’Brien embodies
this year’s theme of the Topsfield
Fair — “Let the Good Times
Grow.”
O’Brien is entering his 18th
year as the general manager of
the fair and previously worked
at Brooksby Farm in Peabody
for 30 years, or 29 years and 11
months as he clarified. He said
his only other job he’s worked
was at Chandler’s by Nanabette’s,
scooping ice cream when he
came home from college — the
University of Maine — for the
summer.
He said he knew the Brooksby
Farm manager through being
an Eagle Scout and the job
opportunity after college worked
out for him.
“I always liked working
outdoors — like working with my
hands,” O’Brien said. “Farming is
one of those kinds of things that
we worked hard, but it was all
worth it.”
He said it helped with his job
to know the people in the city and
know the farm he grew up near.
“It was a great place to grow up.”
During his 30 years at
Brooksby, O’Brien said he
learned to “go with the flow” and
be self-sufficient.
He began transitioning out of
his role at Brooksby Farm and
into the general manager position
at the Topsfield Fair from 2005
to 2007, he said. He was on the
Board of Directors for the fair and
prior to joining in his current role.
“I was at that point in my life
where I was looking for another
adventure,” O’Brien said.
The transition was easier than
he expected because of all the
connections he already had from
serving on the board and working
with people in the industry in his
role at Brooksby, he said.
Now as the general manager,
O’Brien said he manages every
aspect of the fair.
“When you have between
400,000 to 500,000 people
coming to your site… (the work)
doesn’t end,” he said. “Everything
that goes on here touches my
office.”
He supervises 36 departments
of more than 300 employees and
700 to 800 volunteers, dealing
with everything from safety to
entertainment for the fair.
After the countless hours of
work that go into it, O’Brien
said his favorite part of the job is
seeing people finally come to the
fair. He sits on the porch in front
of the main office and watches
families walking around and
enjoying themselves.
He said he prides himself on
the high quality of entertainment
and shows at the fair, especially
being able to educate people
during their experience.
“I’d like to think that people go
away from here with something
they didn’t know before they
came,” O’Brien said.
“We build memories. We
make memories here, and those
memories hopefully last a
lifetime,” he said. “If I can make
somebody’s day just a little bit
brighter or a little bit happier, I
think I won that day.
O’Brien said he is most
looking forward to the same thing
this year as every year in the past
— the smiles on attendees’ faces
as they enjoy the fair.
“I love my job every day. I’m
very, very fortunate that I’ve
never had a day that I didn’t want
to go to work,” he said.
New Mrs. Essex County to be crowned
BY ELIZABETH DELLA PIANA
FILE PHOTO | TOPSFIELD FAIR
Lori Burke was crowned the 52nd Mrs. Essex County at the 2023 Topsfield Fair and will be in attendance at
the 53rd Mrs. Essex County Pageant this year.
The 53rd Mrs. Essex County Pageant will
take place on Oct. 13, 2024, at 1 p.m. during
the upcoming Topsfield Fair. The judges for the
contest include a former Mrs. Essex County
and they will base their decision on general
appearance, personality, poise, and food score
according to the pageant rules and regulations.
To apply, contestants must be at least 18
years old and married. Both the contestant and
spouse must submit their driver’s license, and
the entrant must fill out a Criminal Offender
Record Information application. Contestants
must also submit a food item for display. This
year, the category is the family’s favorite
holiday dessert. After food submission, there
is an interview round. These steps will decide
whether the entrant advances to the pageant
round.
Last year, Lori Burke of Saugus was the Mrs.
Essex County winner, and she spent her time
attending various functions as the ambassador
of the Essex Agricultural Society. Burke spoke
at multiple key events, including one at the
Statehouse, about the importance of agriculture.
She also made appearances at the Essex
Agricultural Society annual dinner, the 4-H
School, and the Essex Beekeeping Association.
The current Mrs. Essex County has been
involved with the fair for about 25 years,
volunteering with her mother, who runs the
food department and has always been an
advocate for Massachusetts agriculture.
When asked why spreading the word about
agriculture is so important, she said, “To me,
it’s important to support our local farmers.
Whether that’s, you know, flower and vegetable
farmers or dairy farmers, you know, they’re a
critical piece of our lives, really.”
She continued, “To be able to have access
to local farms to buy fresh produce from, you
know, it’s just—it’s really special. It’s a really
special organization. It’s really been a privilege
to represent that this past year.”
Burke’s reign as Mrs. Essex County will end
on the last Sunday of the fair, Oct. 14. The new
winner will be crowned on Oct. 13 and take up
the mantle of agriculture ambassador for the
community.

Three Dog Night to perform at the Fair
TOPSFIELD — On Wednesday, Oct.
9, 2024, the legendary music group
Three Dog Night will perform at the
206th Topsfield Fair.
The band’s famous name refers to
native Australian hunters in the outback
who huddled with their dogs for warmth
on cold nights — the coldest being a
“three dog night.” They will perform
their hits “Mama Told Me (Not to
Come),” “Joy to the World,” “Black and
White,” “Shambala,” and “One,” as well
as other new and old favorites.
The group’s eclectic taste, combined
with its ability to recognize and record
hits in a unique, distinctive, and
appealing style, led Three Dog Night to
dominate the charts for years. From 1969
through 1974, no other group achieved
more top-10 hits, sold more records, or
drew larger concert audiences.
Now, marking nearly 50 years on
the road, Three Dog Night continues to
grow its fan base with a full schedule
of concerts at theaters, performing arts
centers, fairs, festivals, corporate events,
and casinos. Since 1986, the band has
performed more than 2,200 shows,
including two Super Bowls.
The Three Dog Night concert is free
with fair admission and will take place
at the Grandstand at 7 p.m.
Ticket prices for the 2024 Topsfield
Fair are $20 each day. Discounted
admission tickets are available at
Brandon Wood of Warren, Massachusetts, waves the money he won at the fifth annual Topsfield Fair Hot Dog
Eating Contest held in 2023. Wood set a new record by eating 11 quarter-pound hot dogs (the equivalent of 22
standard hot dogs) in buns in the allotted seven-minute time period. Wood beat his own record, set last year, when
he ate 10 quarter-pound hot dogs. He received $205 (to celebrate the 205th Topsfield Fair) from Marc Freedman,
who runs the B’nai B’rith booth at the fair, which sponsored the contest.

Topsfield Fair partners with libraries for ‘Read and Win’
TOPSFIELD — This summer,
the Topsfield Fair is once again
partnering with libraries in Essex
and Middlesex counties, as well
as southern New Hampshire,
to promote its “Read and Win”
program. Each library sets a reading
goal for elementary school children
in their communities, encouraging
them to read library books.
Students in kindergarten through
sixth grade who reach their reading
goal will be rewarded with a ribbon
from the International Association
of Fairs and Expositions and one
free admission ticket for students 8
years old and older. Children under
8 with an adult are always admitted
free. Additionally, each child will
receive a coupon for a free hot dog
and drink, courtesy of the Topsfield
Fair.
To make their experience at the
Topsfield Fair even more special,
Fiesta Shows, the Seabrook, New
Hampshire-based company that has
provided family fun at the Topsfield
Fair since 1950, is also awarding
each child who reaches their reading
goal two ride tickets.
“Partnering with local libraries
directly ties in with the educational
programs we run every year during
the Topsfield Fair,” said James
O’Brien, general manager of the
Topsfield Fair. “I’m happy that
Fiesta Shows was once again eager
to participate in the ‘Read and Win’
program with us. It is a testament to
our 74-year partnership and shows
they are as invested in the program
as we are.”
“This year we were very pleased to
award $67,000 in scholarships to high
school seniors who are furthering their
education by entering college,” said
James O’Brien, general manager of the
Topsfield Fair. “We are proud to be able
to contribute this much toward the rising
cost of education. These scholarships
don’t include thousands in additional
financial assistance distributed by several
of our departments, including beekeeping,
rabbits, the sportsmen building, and many
others.”
Also included in this year’s total aid
were scholarships from the Essex County
Farm Bureau Association, the Essex
County Fruit Growers Association, and
the Charles E. Larner Family Foundation.
“This year’s scholarship applicants
once again came from students who are
very involved in their communities, and
many have volunteered at the Topsfield
Fair over the years,” said O’Brien.
Scholarship applications for students
graduating in 2025 are expected to
be available on Jan. 1, 2025, at www.
