Meet Bella Cervantes,
a remarkable 12-yearold
entrepreneur
whose spirit shines brightly
through her jewelry company,

across the Hammond, Baton
Rouge, and New Orleans areas,
Bella and her mother, Robin,
create beautiful, high-quality
bracelets for all occasions. But
this venture is more than just

Bella’s journey has been
anything but ordinary.
Diagnosed with retinoblastoma,
a rare eye cancer, at just two
years old, she courageously
underwent treatment that
resulted in her losing her right
eye. Defying the odds, she
personalized her prosthetic
eye with designs inspired
by her passions, like soccer.
Today, she stands as a symbol
of hope, fully cancer-free
and dedicated to using her
platform to raise awareness for
childhood cancer.

Bella Cervantes es

With a unique background that spans
Nicaragua, other Latin American
countries, the East Coast, and New
Orleans, Alejandro de los Rios, a half-Cuban, half-
Venezuelan creative, embarked on a journey in
the film industry. After graduating from Ithaca
College in New York, his initial pursuit of sports
journalism led to a shift towards multimedia and,
eventually, cinematography, a passion ignited
by New Orleans’ vibrant creative scene.
De los Rios honed his skills through various
projects, including commercials, band profiles,
and behind-the-scenes shoots. He credits
Robert Rodriguez for teaching him about
directing. Quentin Tarantino, Martin Scorsese,
YouTube tutorials, and NOVAC (where he
currently works) were sources for his filmmaking
education.
The turning point in Alejandro de los Ríos’s
career came from participating in the Emerging

Voices Directors Lab at the New Orleans Film
Festival. The program’s grant, mentorship, and
peer support not only enabled him to create a
short film but also solidified his commitment to
filmmaking as a profession.
De los Rios emphasizes the importance of
collaboration and community in filmmaking.
He values diverse perspectives and believes
in fostering a creative environment where the
“best idea wins,” and has established a solid
crew for over ten years. “I quickly learned that
you can’t make movies alone. It’s important to
create a community,” he says. This collaborative
spirit is evident in his work, which includes
documentaries and original short films like
Jalapeño Andretti, Seafood Gangster, and
Distant Mardi Gras.
His latest short, Game Day Ritual, a sports
comedy about three friends who kidnap the
star player of their favorite team to perform an
occult ritual they believe will finally win them a
championship, mixes everything he likes. The
film was chosen to premiere at the New Orleans
Film Festival and Shreveport’s Prize Fest in
October. With a concept for his next movie
ready, de los Rios hopes to shoot in Colombia
or Venezuela, where he has been reconnecting
with his Latin American roots.
De los Rios remains committed to sharing
his knowledge and passion with aspiring
filmmakers, ensuring the next generation is
equipped to tell their stories through film.

que incluye documentales y cortometrajes
originales como Jalapeño Andretti,

Su último cortometraje, Game Day Ritual,
una comedia deportiva sobre tres amigos

What inspired you to study
medicine?
I was very curious to learn how
the human body works.
What are you most
passionate about in your
profession?
Making a difference in
people’s lives, helping them
feel better and enjoy their
quality of life.
Why did you choose geriatrics
as a specialization?
I chose geriatrics because
of the proximity to my
grandparents: I wanted to help
older adults age well. I also
chose palliative care because
I saw that all of my geriatric
patients were going to need
palliative care at some point in
their lives to maintain a good
quality of life despite their
medical conditions.
Is there any condition that
predominates in the patients
you see?
Dementia. This condition is
challenging for patients when
they are diagnosed and are in
mild stages; it is also difficult
for the family and caregiver in
advanced stages. Our focus
naturally shifts in advanced
stages to caring for the
caregiver.
What do you recommend
to people as a preventative
method for that condition or
health in general?
Maintaining a good diet,
an active lifestyle, and

There are many opportunities
available, but they must work
hard in school and not be
afraid to dream or ask for

What do you like about living
in Louisiana?
The Latin community and the
“laid back” lifestyle are very
different from what I was used
to in New York.

como especialización?
Escogí geriatría por la cercanía
a mis abuelos: quería ayudar
a los adultos mayores a
envejecer bien. También escogí
cuidados paliativos al ver que
todos mis pacientes geriátricos
iban a necesitar cuidados
paliativos en algún momento de
sus vidas para poder mantener
una buena calidad de vida,
a pesar de sus condiciones
médicas.
¿Existe alguna condición que
predomina en los pacientes
que atiende?
La demencia. Esta condición es
muy difícil para los pacientes
cuando son diagnosticados y
están en etapas leves, también
es muy difícil para la familia y el
cuidador en etapas avanzadas.
Nuestro enfoque naturalmente
cambia en etapas avanzadas a
cuidar del cuidador.
¿Qué recomienda a las
personas como método
preventivo para esa

general?
Mantener una buena dieta y
una vida activa, el ejercicio es

Ochsner College of Medicine
(XOCOM), is a visionary leader
with a compelling personal story
and a deep commitment to
addressing healthcare disparities.
As a first-generation immigrant
from Cuba, Dr. Seoane’s journey
exemplifies the transformative
power of education and the
importance of representation in
the medical field.
Dr. Seoane often shares
his humble beginnings as a
young boy whose parents
had limited formal education.
“I am that immigrant boy, the
living embodiment of the
transformational power of
medical education,” said Dr.
Seoane in his speech during the
press conference announcement
of the XOCOM. When his parents
immigrated to the United States,
they didn’t speak English. His
father worked as a janitor and
garbage collector while his
mother stayed home to care for
their six boys. Dr. Seoane was
the first in his family to graduate
college and medical school and
inspired his siblings to obtain
professional degrees.
His personal experience
fuels his passion for
creating opportunities for
underrepresented minorities in
medicine and for addressing a
physician workforce crisis. He
recognizes the urgent need to
address the lack of diversity
among physicians, citing alarming
statistics: “While Hispanics make
up 19% of the population, we only
make up 6.9% of the physicians.
In comparison, Blacks and African
Americans make up 14% of the
population; they only make up
5.7% of the physicians.”
As Executive VP and
Chief Academic Officer at
Ochsner Health, Dr. Seoane
has championed numerous
programs fostering inclusivity
and innovation. He has been
instrumental in developing
XOCOM, a groundbreaking
collaboration between Xavier
University of Louisiana (XULA)
and Ochsner Health. As the only
HBCU medical school currently
set to open in the Gulf South,
this unique initiative aims to
train physicians who reflect
their communities and bring a
unique perspective to healthcare,
thereby contributing to a more
equitable healthcare system.

Dr. Seoane’s dedication to
equitable healthcare is evident
in his work. While at Ochsner,
he has fostered partnerships for
Ochsner with multiple universities
in Louisiana and the University
of Queensland in Australia. He
has consulted XULA to establish
programs like the physician’s
assistantship and counseling
programs, which have increased
representation in fields where
practitioners of minority groups
are underrepresented. He
envisions the XOCOM as a
catalyst for change, stating,
“The Xavier Ochsner College
of Medicine will transform
generations of young Black and
Brown lives; they’ll experience
the transformational power of
a STEM education, of a life in
service of others.”
The XOCOM’s mission aligns
with Dr. Seoane’s vision of
addressing physician shortages
and improving health outcomes
for minority communities. He
emphasizes the urgency of this
mission, stating, “As we face this
incredible physician shortage of
up to 86,000 by 2036, it is more

Blanca E. Johnson:
Reinventing Success
Nicaraguan, by the
Grace of God, Blanca
E. Johnson grew up in
a family of successful business
owners. From a young age,
she learned the value of good
customer service and hard work
while helping at El Coliseo,
her family’s restaurant. Beyond
providing high-quality food, she
also shared her artistic talents
as a classical dancer, playing
the guitar, singing and wearing
colorful costumes. Sandino,
the revolutionary leader of
Nicaragua, forced her family to
move to Miami, and El Coliseo
found a new home. After a few
years, the restaurant closed
due to her father’s illness, and
Johnson sought a new career.
Working for a recognized
financial institution, she advanced
rapidly, learning every job in
detail until becoming the head of
compliance. “I don’t like breaking
the rules,” says Johnson, which
made the position a great fit
for her. As a risk analyst, she
worked internationally, achieving
great success and recognition.
Johnson earned a good salary
and had a life full of luxuries.
When she found members of the
bank’s staff were breaking the
rules, including senior executives,
she had to report it. Doing so
cost her a 30-year career in
the banking industry due to
retaliation. “I went from having
everything to having nothing.”
She found herself in a dark
place, battling depression. In
hindsight, Johnson saw this as a
turning point. God, she believes,
was showing her a better path.
“I had become a very arrogant
person,” she admits. In 2011, her
sister welcomed her in New
Orleans.
Once again, she had to
reinvent herself. Johnson
recovered financially, working for
cruise ship companies and Pan-
American Life. Within five years,
she had bought a house. More
importantly, she transformed
into a more humble and
compassionate person, a change
she is proud of.
In 2018, she decided to
work independently as a Realtor
for Keller Williams, and as she
had done many times before,
she learned everything about
real estate. With her previous
experience in finance and
business management, Blanca
has all the tools needed to get
results for her clients. “Nothing
stops me from achieving my
goals,” she says.
Johnson’s achievements
speak volumes about her
capabilities. As the V.P. for KW
Chispa Southeast, a Top 20
Selling Producer and host of
the American Dream TV Show,
she has proven her expertise
in the real estate industry. Her
motto, “With Blanca, it is
possible,” instills confidence
in her clients that they can
achieve their dream of finding a
new home.
In New Orleans, Johnson
reinvented herself, found love,
and currently dedicates herself
to motivating those around
her to achieve their goals. She
firmly believes success is always
within reach, regardless of one’s
starting point. “The only block
you have in life is yourself,” she

se crió en una familia de

muy joven, aprendió el valor de
un buen servicio al cliente y de
trabajar duro cuando ayudaba
en El Coliseo, el restaurante
de su familia. Fuera de brindar
comida de alta calidad,
también compartía sus talentos
artísticos de baile clásico,
tocando la guitarra, cantando, y
vistiendo coloridos disfraces.
Como a muchos
Nicaragüenses, Sandino obligó
a su familia a mudarse a Miami.
El Coliseo también encontró
una nueva sede en Florida. A
raíz de la enfermedad de su
padre, el restaurante cerró,
y Johnson buscó una nueva
carrera.
Hizo parte de una
importante institución bancaria
donde avanzó rápidamente
dentro de todos los niveles
de operaciones, aprendiendo
cada detalle y convirtiéndose
en jefe de cumplimiento, una
posición ideal para quien
asegura, “no me gusta romper
las reglas”. Bajo su cargo de
análisis de riesgo, trabajó

Al enterarse que sus colegas
estaban obviando las reglas,
tuvo que reportarlo, aunque

bancario. “Pase de tenerlo
todo a no tener nada”, dice
Johnson, y una vez más, tuvo
que reinventarse.
En esos momentos la
depresión casi le cuesta
la vida. Hoy, mirando atrás
reconoce que Dios quiso
mostrarle un mejor camino.
“Me había convertido en una
persona muy soberbia”. Su
hermana la acogió en Nueva
Orleans en 2011, y se reinventó
nuevamente. Trabajó para
compañías de cruceros, para
Pan-American Life y volvió a
recuperarse financieramente.
Compró su casa en cinco años,
y en el proceso se convirtió
en una mejor persona, con el
propósito de servir, de la cual
se siente orgullosa.
En 2018 encontró que
como agente de bienes raíces
para Keller Williams podía
trabajar independientemente.
Aprendió todo sobre bienes
raíces y con su experiencia
en finanzas y en la gestión de
negocios, cuenta con todas las
herramientas para conseguir
resultados. “Nada me detiene
para lograr mis objetivos”, dice.
En Nueva Orleans se
reinventó, encontró el amor, y
disfruta motivar a las personas

Come in regularly for breast
exams, pap smears, and to
discuss birth control, if you

What advice do you give
to young immigrants or
minority groups in the US
who dream of studying
health careers?
Keep focused on your
studies, both at school and
at the university. The path to
becoming a doctor can be
tricky - but in the end - you
will be doing work that will
give you happiness for the
rest of your life.
What do you like about
living in Louisiana?
I love going to the theater.
I also enjoy concerts and
festivals like French Quarter
Fest, Jazz Fest, and Essence
Fest.

Ana Conejo: A Latina in Louisiana News
Ana Conejo is a passionate news
reporter for NBC 33 and FOX
44 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
Originally from Houston, Texas, Ana has
embraced her role in the vibrant culture of
Southeast Louisiana since moving there
a year and a half ago. With a Bachelor’s
Degree in Mass Communications from
Stephen F. Austin State University, she
brings a wealth of knowledge and a
heartfelt dedication to empowering her
community by sharing their stories.
“I always have had a humanitarian
heart,” Ana says. “Being a news reporter
allows me to be a voice for the community
and emphasize the voices of those
who need to be louder.” This purpose
is evident in her work, which spans a
variety of topics, from community issues
to uplifting stories.
One of Ana’s favorite pastimes is
exploring the culinary scene in New
Orleans, especially the fusion of Hispanic
and Louisiana cuisines. “Trying different
Hispanic food brings me joy,” she shares,
noting that tacos de barbacoa with
salsa verde top her list. Beyond culinary
adventures, Ana finds comfort by the
New Orleans lakefront, where the water’s
tranquility resonates with her.
Proud of her Mexican heritage, she
cherishes the community’s resilience.
“Hispanics are fighters who know how to

to enter journalism? “Network! Don’t be
afraid to reach out and ask questions.
Remember, you’re pitching yourself.”
