Losing always hurts, but perspective and the next game must triumph! 

Last week we deemed our Alabama cover as a “Super 

Fight on the Capstone” and my goodness the game in 

Tuscaloosa certainly delivered that and some. 

The Crimson Elephants bloodied our Dawgs to a 

pulp in the first half, but Kirby and Co. came off the deck after 

intermission with a furious comeback for the ages. The fight and 

grit in our team was tremendous. 

Unfortunately, as it has been the case far many times over the 

last two decades, Alabama rose to the occasion with a knockout 

blow just after Georgia did the impossible and took the lead. 

So there you have it … another disappointing and 

heartbreaking loss to the mighty Crimson Tide. Ouch, it is so darn 

painful. Brutal, awful … grrrrr. 

However, perspective must triumph here. 

Particularly, when we are merely talking about 

losing a football game. Last week’s hurricane 

wreaked havoc through Florida, Georgia, 

North Carolina, Tennessee and even further 

north. Many lives were lost and many beautiful 

communities will never be the same with such 

immense infrastructure and property damage. 

That’s real life pain. That’s what is really brutal 

and awful. And it certainly makes you sick to 

your stomach for the thousands of people 

across the South who are suffering and must 

rebuild. Everyone at BI’s heart goes out to all 

dealing with this devastation. 

For our Bulldogs, they lost a football game. 

Their first regular season one in 43 attempts. 

It’s a bitter pill, but nothing to lose sleep over. 

So we move on … 

And what better place to start with than Homecoming in Athens 

this weekend. 

After two physical games on the road, being in Sanford Stadium 

is certainly going to be great for the Bulldogs team and fans. As 

Jeff Dantzler always tells our readers, savor every game because 

the season comes and goes with a flurry. 

While there was some chattering in the off-season that some 

in Auburn Nation might feel disrespected to be Georgia’s 

homecoming opponent, I would think that is hardly on the minds 

of either football team. Instead, both the Bulldogs and Tigers will 

be focused on getting the bad taste out of their mouths. 

By no means, should Georgia fans discount Auburn’s current 2-3 

record. The Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry is always a battle. Also, 

the Tigers are certainly due a victory over our Dawgs in a series 

that has skewed mightily in the Red and Black’s favor. And the 

opportunity doesn’t get any more promising for Hugh Freeze and 

his squad after the two aforementioned physical road games for 

Georgia to end September.

HOMECOMING AND AUBURN! 


Alright Dawg fans, let’s shake off the bitterness from Tuscaloosa 

and get ready for Saturday’s homecoming game. Our team needs 

to feel your support. Like always, the guys on the field are the 

ones that truly feel the dejection of a loss. After all, they are the 

ones who put in the 24/7 blood, sweat and tears that it takes to 

be a Georgia Bulldog. 

This issue of BI will get you ready. 

The scene in Tuscaloosa was electric, so capturing fan photos 

was a blast. Enjoy perusing those starting on page 28. 

Since this is a home game issue, all our regular franchise features 

are back. 

I know you will enjoy getting to know more about Cathy Butler

and business owner. How cool that Matt 

raised his golf game in such a small amount

early adulthood. Boy, I sure wish I had that

Dick Ferguson’s men’s clothing store for 90 years. I loved how 

Loran even wove in employees from different generations of

milestone.

The Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry is a series of streaks with the Dawgs 

dominating as of recent, but there were decades of Tiger run times 

From 1977 through 2001, Georgia 

was 2-11 against Auburn in 

Sanford Stadium. Let that sink 

in. The Bulldogs wins over that 

stretch came in 1981, a 24-13 victory over 

the Tigers clinching a second straight 

Southeastern Conference crown for the 

reigning national champions, and ten 

years later, in 1991, Georgia held on 

and prevailed 37-27. There was a lot of 

heartache on those November Saturday’s 

against the ancient rival. Red and Black 

dreams of Southeastern Conference 

championships, cracks at national titles 

and major bowl berths, were all undone 

by Auburn. Some would be great 

seasons became merely good because 

the Bulldogs just flat out could not beat 

Auburn Between the Hedges. And my 

goodness, they sure did do it with a lot of 

players from our state. Even more salt in 

the “what if” football wounds. 

One of Georgia’s best ever safeties, 

All-SEC and Academic All-American (in 

the prestigious Terry College of Business 

mind you) Kirby Paul Smart was a part 

of two of those losses during his playing 

days. In 1995, Smart’s redshirt freshman 

year, the Tigers beat the Bulldogs 37-31 in 

Athens. Soon after, a new era of Georgia 

football would begin. Two years later, in 

Jim Donnan’s second season at the Bulldog 

helm, and fresh off a 37-17 victory over 

Florida - a game in which Smart picked off 

a pair of Gator passes - Takeo Spikes and 

Auburn beat the Dogs 45-34 for the second 

loss of an outstanding 10-2 top ten season. 

To be a championship team, you have to 

win at home. There were too many years 

where the Dogs lost too many Between the 

Hedges. Lots of heartbreakers. Well, Coach 

King Kirby Smart has turned the tables and 

Georgia has been downright dominant 

Between the Hedges. And the Bulldogs have 

been successful against Auburn dating back 

to Mark Richt’s tenure in Athens. 

There are some very impressive streaks 

that the Bulldogs desperately want to and 

need to keep rolling Saturday on Dooley 

Field at Sanford Stadium. 

Georgia has won a school record 26 

consecutive home games. It’s the longest 

active home winning streak in the country. 

Georgia’s previous mark for successive 

victories Between the Hedges was 24. It 

began in the 1980 national championship 

season, and it ended in a mega showdown 

top five matchup in 1983 when 8-1 

Auburn topped 8-0-1 Georgia, 13-7. The 

year before, it should be noted, was my 

favorite ever Bulldog win over Auburn. 

Larry Munson was at his magnificent best. 

I was ten, making loops through our den, 

living room and foyer, living and dying 

with every breath uttered by the mighty 

Munson. My dad counted the laps, it was 

over a hundred on Forest Pines Drive, 

Statesboro, GA. 

“Hunker Down You Guys. I know I’m 

asking a lot you guys, but Hunker Down 

One More Time. The Dawgs broke it up. 

They broke it up. Ronnie Harris and Jeff 

Sanchez. Oh Look at the Sugar Falling out 

of the Sky.” 

The final that day at Jordan-Hare, 

Georgia-19, Auburn-14 to make it 10-0 and 

three straight Southeastern Conference 

crowns. Later that afternoon, I tasted my 

first dark liquor drink. We were at the 

home of our family friends, the Bentley’s, 

watching LSU - Mississippi State, and I 

was so gleeful over Georgia’s heart-racing 

triumph. I grabbed what I thought was my 

dad’s straight Coca-Cola, and it had a nice 

dose of 93 octane gasoline known as Wild 

Turkey. My dad didn’t need to tell me, but 

he reminded me anyway to “ask before 

sipping someone else’s drink.” Message 

received. 

Back to the streaks. 

The Bulldogs, starting with the 28-7 2017 

SEC Championship Game victory over 

the Tigers, which vaulted Georgia to the 

College Football Playoff and Rose Bowl, 

have beaten Auburn seven consecutive

times. This is part of an astounding run of 

success against the Tigers. Dating back 

to underdog Georgia’s 37-15 upset of 

once-beaten Auburn in 2006, a year after 

a piercing 31-30 gut punch Between the 

Hedges, the Bulldogs have won 16 of the 

past 19 games against Auburn. 

To put into perspective, after that sad 

night in 2005, Auburn led the all-time 

series 53-48-8. 

Georgia now leads the all-time series 

with the Tigers 64-56-8. 

Incredible. 

That’s one, as I’ve said many times, if 

you would have told me back in the late 

80’s - back when I was really into Georgia 

football - when Auburn beat my beloved 

Bulldogs seven times in eight years from 

1983 - 1990 (Glory Glory to the 20-16 

upset triumph between the hoses in 1986 

when Steve Boswell was the hero), I have 

a hard time imagining such a run against 

the Tigers. 

And how about this one. For the school 

that could not seem to beat this arch rival 

at home, dating back to the famed 45-20 

Blackout victory in 2007, Georgia has won 

eight consecutive games against Auburn 

on the hallowed grounds of Dooley Field 

at Sanford Stadium. 

But eight straight, that’s quite a change 

from 2-11. A lot more happy walks up 

Baxter and Lumpkin hills. 

But as Georgia’s future Hall of Fame coach 

is always quick to remind, “humility is just 

a week away.” You know the Dogs will get 

Auburn’s best shot. Georgia got it last year 

in a 27-20 comeback win. 

Auburn would love to come into Athens, 

flip the script and begin a new streak of 

success, energizing the Tigers season 

while deflating the Bulldogs roadmap to 

further greatness in 2024. 

If the Bulldogs can prevail, those streaks 

get a boost and all of this season’s dreams 

are still very much alive.

For the 129th time, the Georgia Bulldogs and Auburn Tigers 

square off on the gridiron, renewing acquaintances in the Deep 

South’s Oldest Rivalry, the one that got it all started back in 1892 

at Piedmont Park in Atlanta. The Dogs have won seven straight 

against the Tigers, including a 27-20 thriller last year at Jordan- 

Hare Stadium, and 16 of the last 19 and lead the all-time series 

64-56-8. 

Extensive research is not required to discover that few teams in 

the grand history of the mighty Southeastern Conference have 

been charged with facing the Alabama Crimson Tide and Auburn 

Tigers on back to back weeks. 

That is Georgia’s challenge. 

Of course, there are no tears or violins to be heard from the 

loveliest village on the Plains, as the Tigers are coming off a 

mega showdown of their own against SEC newcomer Oklahoma, 

which has a pretty steeped tradition of its own. Auburn came up 

short 27-21 to the Sooners at Jordan-Hare Stadium. The Tigers 

controlled most of the game, and led 21-10 in the fourth quarter. 

But a costly pick-six gave the Sooners the lead, and Oklahoma 

held on. It was the lone turnover of the game for Auburn. In the 

Tigers two previous losses to California and Arkansas, Auburn had 

five turnovers in both of those contests. 

The Tigers head to Athens with a record of 2-3 and 0-2 in the 

SEC. 

Turnovers were a major factor in Georgia’s 41-34 loss to Alabama 

this past Saturday. Three interceptions and a fumble were costly, 

as the Bulldogs incredible 42 game regular season winning streak 

came to an end against the Crimson Tide. 

The Bulldogs are now 3-1, and 1-1 in the SEC, winners of 49 of 

the last 52 games. 

Both Kirby Smart and Hugh Freeze will have the focus on the 

turnover battle. The Bulldogs also are hungry for better offensive 

production in the first half. Georgia scored six against Clemson in 

the first half of the 34-6 season opening victory in Atlanta. In the 

13-12 victory at Kentucky, the Dogs trailed 6-3 at intermission. 

It was 30-7 in Alabama’s favor last weekend at Bryant-Denny 

Stadium. 

Georgia has been tremendous on Dooley Field at Sanford 

Stadium winning 26 straight games in Athens under Smart’s 

watch. Georgia last lost Between the Hedges to South Carolina 

20-17 in double overtime in 2019, a game in which the Bulldogs 

had four turnovers and missed two field goals. 

Make no mistake, Georgia is still clearly in the playoff picture, but 

facing one of the nation’s most daunting schedules, the margin 

for error to earn one of those 12 berths is now more narrow. A 

victory over the Tigers is vital to championship and postseason 

dreams.

BULLDOGS TO WATCH

MIKE BOBO (OC) - After leaving many fans questioning what the 

Georgia offense is made of through the first three weeks, Bobo called a 

solid game offensively against Alabama, coaching his unit for over 500 

yards and 34 points in a near comeback for the ages. In order for the 

Bulldogs to bounce back from the heartbreaking loss that the Alabama 

game was, another great offensive outing led by the Bulldogs offensive 

coordinator is just what this team needs to keep fighting for their life.

OSCAR DELP (TE #4) - Going into the season, it seemed as though 

Delp would be given the task of trying to replace tight end superstar 

Brock Bowers as best he could. However, the junior tight end has been 

one of the quietest players on offense for the Bulldogs so far. With just 

three receptions and 25 yards on the year, many members of Bulldog 

Nation are wondering if he will ever get things going. Against an Auburn 

defense that has proven to be the stronghold of their team, look for Delp 

to find quality targets while the Tigers keep their main focus on Georgia’s 

wideouts and backs. 

DILLON BELL (WR #86) - Going into the Alabama game, it was clear 

that one of Georgia’s playmakers was going to have to step up in order to 

keep pace with the Tide. With 100 yards receiving, a 67-yard touchdown 

reception, and a rushing touchdown, Bell was arguably the offensive 

player of the game for Georgia. His performance was the breakout game 

that he desperately needed. If he can build off the success he had last 

week in front of the Sanford crowd, he could emerge as one of the key 

weapons for Bobo’s scheme as the season progresses. 

TREVOR ETIENNE (RB #1) - In SEC matchups against rival teams, 

winning the battle in the trenches is key in establishing the tempo for 

the game. The former Florida Gator recorded his first touchdown in the 

Red and Black during the first half of last week’s game, along with 55 

yards rushing. In what will be his first Georgia-Auburn game, keep an eye 

on ETN to help settle quarterback Carson Beck into the game with a few 

break away runs throughout the game. 

SMAEL MONDON JR. (LB #2) - The senior linebacker leads his 

defense into a matchup with a reeling Auburn offensive attack who

Vince Dooley was the head coach for six 

Southeastern Conference championship teams at 

Georgia. The Bulldogs clinched five of those titles 

on the Plains, and in Athens in 1981. 

Mark Richt’s most significant triumph over the 

Tigers came in 2002 as David Greene hit Michael 

Johnson for the go-ahead touchdown, vaulting the 

Dogs to the SEC Championship Game. 

One of the biggest wins in Georgia history came 

in Kirby Smart’s second season at the helm, 

as the Bulldogs beat Auburn in the 2017 SEC 

Championship Game to earn a CFP berth.

and Oklahoma. If Mondon Jr. can create headaches for Auburn 

quarterback Payton Thorne by leading the younger players on 

defense, it could be a long afternoon for Hugh Freeze and the

MALAKI STARKS (DB #24) - Starks, alongside Mondon Jr., is a 

key veteran-piece of this Georgia defense that will be looking to 

rebound after his unit gave up 547 yards of offense and 41 points 

to Alabama. While the Tigers do not have as much fire power 

offensively as the Tide, anything can happen in a rivalry game, so 

it will be important for Starks to continue his great success on the 

field to limit Auburn’s chances of pulling off the upset.

KJ BOLDEN (DB #4) - Going back to Payton Thorne, he has 

thrown an interception in every game this season except for their 

season-opening win against Alabama A&M. Bolden, who has 16 

tackles on the year, is still waiting for his first collegiate takeaway. 

Facing a quarterback that turns the ball over as much as Thorne 

does, this would be a game where the former five-star could 

accomplish that goal in his first big game in Sanford Stadium.

TIGERS TO WATCH

HUGH FREEZE (HC) - Hugh Freeze starts off the season 2-3, with two 

SEC losses at home. This weekend, Auburn heads to Athens for their first 

conference road game of the season. Freeze may be working his way into 

the hot seat in his second year with the Tigers. Freeze helped bring in 

the No. 10 ranked ‘24 recruiting class, but fans of such a historic program 

hope to compete for more than just a bowl game. He has the chance 

to take advantage of a Georgia team returning from their first regular 

season loss in years.

PAYTON THORNE (QB #1) - The former Michigan State transfer took 

his job back as Auburn’s starting quarterback once redshirt freshman 

Hank Brown threw three interceptions against Arkansas. Thorne is in his 

fifth year of collegiate ball. He has yet to have an excellent game once 

becoming the leader of the Tiger’s offense. At this point in the season, 

Thorne has 700 passing yards, seven TDs, and five interceptions. These 

stats were recorded in four games, since he did not see the field against 

New Mexico. 

‌KEANDRE LAMBERT-SMITH (WR #5) - Lambert-Smith is the favorite 

target across the board for Auburn’s quarterback room. He spent his 

first four years under James Franklin at Penn State. With 338 receiving 

yards and five touchdowns, he’s already on track for the best season of 

his career. Georgia is coming off of one of if not their toughest receiver 

matchup of the season against Alabama. The Dawgs are primed to 

bounce back from Bama’s dynamic offensive scheme. Shutting down the 

Tiger’s 4.3 forty receiver will be at the top of the list for a defense with a 

chip on their shoulder. 

‌JARQUEZ HUNTER (RB #27) - A familiar face is back for his senior 

season. Running back Jarquez Hunter stands at 5-10, 209-pound and 

possesses elite speed for his size. Georgia’s run defense had been solid 

to say the least until facing the anomaly that is Jalen Milroe. Auburn’s 

offense does not have nearly as much of an ability as Alabama to split the 

run game between their quarterback and running backs. This leaves for 

a less-complicated scheme for the defensive line to show off their runstopping 

capability against a skilled SEC back. 


Joe Cribbs was an All-Southeastern Conference 

running back at Auburn, who then went on to a fine 

career in professional football, including three Pro 

Bowl trips with the Buffalo Bills. 

One of Auburn’s greatest teams ever was the 1983 

SEC Championship squad. Featuring Bo Jackson 

and a dominating defense. The Tigers went 11-1 and 

finished No. 3 nationally. 

All-American Tiger legend Charles Barkley is one 

of the greatest basketball players ever. An 11-time 

All-Star, Barkley’s No. 34 is retired by Auburn, the 

Philadelphia 76ers and Phoenix Suns. 


‌JERRIN THOMPSON (SAFETY #1) - The most impactful 

defender for Auburn has been safety Jerrin Thompson. Thompson 

makes plays across the field. Thus far, he leads the team in tackles 

in addition to a sack and an interception. Currently projected a 

fourth-rounder, Thompson looks to raise his stock against a highlyranked 

road opponent in Georgia. 

‌DORIAN MAUSI JR. (LB #12) - Another player to watch in his 

first year with the Tigers. Dorian Mausi Jr. was a two-year starter 

for Duke before transferring to Auburn for his fifth year of college 

ball. He was the 38th ranked linebacker in the transfer portal this 

past offseason. Just behind Jerrin Thompson, Mauri Jr. has 20 total 

tackles on the season. Now, he has to face the Dawgs for the first 

time in his career. 

‌KELDRIC FAULK (DL #15) - As just a sophomore, Keldric Faulk is 

already a seasoned player among the Tiger’s defense. He saw time 

in each game during his first year. Showing no signs of slowing

down, Faulk has five tackles for losses this season, including three 

sacks. The lineman is yet another test for a slightly injured Georgia 

offensive line.

1. Turnovers - For Auburn to pull off the upset in Athens, winning the 

turnover battle would be a huge plus. It always is. Hot take. Georgia needs 

to force turnovers and protect the football. It was turnovers that doomed 

the Tigers in their losses to Cal and Arkansas. Remember when Auburn 

nearly beat the top-ranked Bulldogs on the Plains? Hugh Freeze’s team 

cashed in on Bulldog miscues. Turnovers and the kicking game are always 

hypercritical. That’s certainly the case Saturday. For Coach King Kirby 

Smart, these are what the ‘experts’ call “points of emphasis.” As if they aren’t 

for every game. But hey, this is Georgia/Auburn. 

2. Physicality - Toughness, especially in the trenches, is another building 

block to victory in the Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry. It pays to be the 

toughest, strongest kid on the block. And you better be able to counter 

punch. Going back to Wally Butts, Shug Jordan, Vince Dooley, Pat Dye, 

all the way to today, the team that brings the superior physicality on the 

line of scrimmage when the Bulldogs battle the Tigers, is usually the one 

emerging victorious. 

3. Crossovers Athens to Auburn - The connections between these two 

ancient foes are well known and documented. They were perhaps most 

famous in the 1980’s when Vince Dooley was at Georgia and Pat Dye was 

at Auburn. Dooley was a stellar receiver at Auburn. Dye was a top flight 

tackle at Georgia. Erk Russell went to Auburn. In fact, he was the Tigers 

last four sport letterman. Joel Eaves came to Georgia from Auburn. He 

was hired on November 22, 1963. Not an insignificant date in history. 

Dick Copas, Lee Hayley and John Shafer, all ultra valuable members of the 

UGA Athletic Association through the years, came to Georgia from the 

Plains. Jordan was the head basketball coach, and an assistant football 

coach at Georgia before embarking on his storied career at Auburn. One 

of Georgia’s great offensive linemen from the 1980 national championship 

team, Hugh Nall, who began his coaching career at Georgia Southern 

with the incomparable Erskine Russell, was the country’s best O-Line 

coordinator for Tommy Tuberville at Auburn. Even a young member of the 

Southeastern Conference’s Sports Information Department Ben Beatty, 

who learned from the masters Dan Magill and Claude Felton at Georgia, is 

an Auburn graduate. I’m sure I left some people out that I’m going to be 

kicking myself over, but the crossover connections are pretty incredible. 

4. 2017 - One of Georgia’s greatest victories came over Auburn in the 2017 

Southeastern Conference Championship Game. The Bulldogs, in Smart’s 

second season, prevailed 28-7 at Mercedes Benz Stadium, improving to 

12-1 and earning a berth in the College Football Playoff. Three weeks 

earlier, Gus Malzahn’s Tigers “beat the Dog crap” out of Georgia 40-17 

at Jordan-Hare Stadium. This was the first of Smart’s two epic in-season 

vengeance victories. The other coming four years later over Alabama in 

Indianapolis for the 2021 national championship. Roquan Smith was the 

MVP, Georgia dominated the special teams, Jake Fromm and Terry Godwin 

connected for an Octopus (TD and two-pointer) and D’Andre Swift’s fleet 

64-yard touchdown dash delivered the knockout blow. The Bulldogs 

captured the conference crown for the first time since 2005, when Smart 

was a very young assistant for Mark Richt. 

5. Brock Bowers - Georgia’s incomparable All-American had one of his 

finest performances ever - which is saying something - in the Bulldogs 

27-20 triumph on the plains last season. Bowers had eight receptions for 

157 yards, highlighted by a 40-yard catch and run for a score to put the 

Bulldogs ahead 27-20 with just under three minutes to play. Earlier on the 

go-ahead march, he hauled in a critical 16-yard reception on third and 

12 from the Bulldogs 45 - moving the chains and getting the Bulldogs 

within striking distance. Two plays later, after quarterback Carson Beck 

was pushed back for a one-yard loss, Bowers pulled in the aerial across the 

middle, shook a slew of defenders and turned on the jets down the right 

side for the amazing score. Brock Bowers … an absolute all-time great.

What a fight. 

There’s no 

other way to 

describe this 

disappointing loss in Tuscaloosa. 

Out of the gate, the Crimson 

Tide, energized by their 

home crowd, jumped out to 

an absolutely shocking 28-0 

lead due to quarterback Jalen 

Milroe’s near perfect play. 

A safety due to intentional 

grounding in the end zone was 

yet another blow to the Dawgs’ 

hopes of escaping Bryant-Denny 

Stadium alive. Georgia found 

themselves down 30-7 at the 

break, and many had given up 

hope. However, Kirby Smart and 

his Bulldogs kept fighting and 

fighting on both sides of the 

ball until a 67-yard touchdown 

pass to Dillon Bell gave Georgia 

an improbable 1-point lead. 

However, the game was flipped 

moments later when 17-year old 

Ryan WIlliams caught a 75-yard 

bomb for what was the eventual 

game-winner. 

While it seems like Carson Beck’s 

Heisman campaign is fading, 

Beck made multiple gamechanging 

throws, some good 

and some bad. After Alabama 

took the lead back with just 

under three minutes to go, Beck 

had the opportunity to put 

his three previous turnovers 

behind him and lead a gametying 

drive. Unfortunately, he 

threw his third interception of 

the game trying to find a Dawg 

in the endzone that ultimately 

sealed their fate. For whatever 

reason, the Georgia quarterback 

seemed rattled from the very 

beginning, and while he was 

able to lead his team to an 

amazing comeback, many 

fans will not overlook his four 

turnovers. 

At the end of the day, you 

have to give Coach Smart a 

tremendous amount of credit. 

When most other teams in 

college football would have 

thrown in the towel, he showed 

everyone just how resilient 

the Georgia program is by 

nearly pulling off one of the 

most unbelievable comebacks 

in recent memory. While this 

loss stings, and there is much 

frustration to once again lose to 

Alabama, the Dawgs still have 

a great team and a hope of a 

special season. Georgia still has 

many tough opponents left on 

their schedule to make things 

right. 

Looking into the matchup with 

Auburn, a team who currently 

sits at an abysmal 2-3, this is 

a perfect opportunity to get 

back in the win column against 

a rival. Two upcoming home 

conference games bring a great 

slate to build momentum before 

the next big challenge at Texas. 

Even with the loss, we believe 

there may be a unique sense 

of momentum returning home 

from Tuscaloosa. The second 

half showed a completely 

different team. It’s our hope that 

Coach Smart and Co. can find 

consistency in their play. We 

believe the Georgia team that 

showed up in the latter half of 

the Alabama game is the best in 

the sport.

Andy Burcham, the Voice of the Auburn Tigers, is kind enough to once again 

contribute his outstanding insight into this classic college football rivalry. Andy is 

one of the finest broadcasters in the business, whether it’s football, basketball or 

baseball. He and his wife Jan are the Godparents to Shelby and Joshua Bramblett,

The Fergusons - the proud Athens family forges 

ahead with their 90 year old haberdashery! 

When I arrived in Athens in the 

late ’50s, I wasn’t a hayseed 

with my belongings slung 

over my shoulder in a small 

bag, but I was about as naive and wet 

behind the ears as there has ever been. 

If anybody ever needed seasoning it 

was this country boy who only had one 

redeeming constant—I did enjoy reading 

and had learned a few things about the 

world with a small-town appreciation for 

the county library. 

The University of Georgia in those 

days was far from what it is today, but 

comfortable in its “downhome skin.” It 

functioned with an “in loco parentis” 

atmosphere which wasn’t necessarily all 

that bad come to think of it. It was nice to 

have a faculty and administration that was 

compatible “acting in place of a parent.” 

Everything about the campus was 

“laid back.” The pace was measured and 

the only fuss was about losing football 

seasons although the Bulldogs had broken 

the drought against Georgia Tech in 1957 

and had begun a four-year winning streak 

over the arch enemy. The decade would 

end with an SEC championship and a trip 

to the Orange Bowl. 

There were five men’s stores in town at 

that time (Gunn’s, Sanders, John Jarrell’s, 

John Q West, and Dick Ferguson’s) — all 

seemed to be flourishing with much of 

the student body eager to shop for button 

down dress shirts and sweaters, along 

with khakis and saddle oxfords. If you were 

affluent enough, you splurged for English 

Leather Cologne. 

Every coed was as smashing as 

Hollywood starlets and the best deal for 

breakfast could be found at the Mayflower 

and Tony’s on Clayton Street, which was 

only a few doors from Ferguson’s. 

This is Ferguson’s 90th year, the oldest 

men’s retail store in the state according 

to family offspring Dick, John and Ed, the 

three sons of Dick and Edwina Ferguson. It 

is also one of the oldest businesses in the 

Classic City. 

With the changing of times, the store 

left Clayton Street for the Beechwood 

Shopping Center and now at its present 

location, 1059 Baxter Street. 

The store opened in 1934 by the 

patriarch, Richard John Ferguson. When 

he passed away in 1944, his widow, Mary, 

ran the store and was central to its success. 

Her warm and engaging smile made 

customers feel at home as she groomed 

her son Dick Jr, to take over which he did 

following graduation from UGA in 1962. 

She played the piano for the Rotary and 

Kiwanis Clubs and was among the bestknown 

personalities in Athens. The store 

manager for many years was Ralph Almond 

who knew the town’s leading citizens and 

half the student body, or so it seemed. 

Ralph had a natural sales personality. He 

was genial and conversational. He would 

greet you with pleasantries about what 

was taking place on campus and had 

a wealth of “gossip” about the Bulldog 

football team—nothing sinister or nosey, 

but topical and interesting. “I am worried 

about Theron Sapp,” he might say about 

Georgia’s power running fullback who was 

hampered by a sprained ankle. “We sure 

need him in the lineup against Auburn 

Saturday.” Ralph made you feel he was 

hurting about Sapp’s questionable starting 

status as much as the coaching staff did. 

Dick Jr. gained experience while he was 

in high school and took over the same 

year he was graduated from UGA. He was 

low key and patronizing of the traditional 

values underscoring faith, family and flag. 

Most of my friends shopped at Ferguson’s, 

one I remember was the warm and genteel 

Ron Smith, a classmate in the Henry Grady 

School of Journalism. He was a background 

singer for a local band, “The Gates.” 

The band played at fraternity parties and 

for other groups and went on the road to 

neighboring towns and counties. Ron and 

the band members didn’t become rich, but 

they lived large with their excess spending 

money at Ferguson’s and other assorted 

stores downtown. After retirement, Ron 

began working at Ferguson’s as a semiretiree. 

The annual senior parade was a big deal 

for homecoming and Ferguson’s always had 

what seemed to be an unlimited supply 

of planter’s style hats and small canes to 

make the walk around the field, a tradition 

that ended when the class became too 

large to make it an orderly and casual walk 

around the field. An intoxicated student 

unfurled an ugly phrase on a banner one 

homecoming in 1968 and that was the end 

of the senior parade. 

I always enjoyed shopping at Ferguson’s. 

Dick was a classmate and he and Ralph 

were always on site, eager and ready for 

Bulldog conversation. 

They enjoyed chatter about what was 

going on at Payne Hall, the athletic 

dormitory of those years. They loved 

having players such as Pat Dye and Fran 

Tarkenton shop with them. 

Dick started the SAE fraternity tradition 

at UGA in his family and now includes 

three generations. He was well connected 

during his time on campus and loyal 

customers would continue to shop 

following graduation. 

Then sons and grandsons—and now 

great grandsons—never lost their affinity 

for Dick’s lines of clothing and apparel. 

Until television and organized tailgating 

reached is craze in recent years, many of 

those steadfast customers would spend 

time shopping at Ferguson’s and then 

settle in for the traditional 2 p.m. kickoff 

Saturday afternoon. 

As Dick’s health began to fail, his sons 

wanted to keep the business active and 

could not think of closing the doors. 

They put together a survival plan, which 

basically was to come with new marketing 

ideas which focused on lines that 

appealed to young people today. They 

began with Shane Cooper who gave way 

to the current hierarchy, Patrick Sowell and 

his wife, Claire. She manages the on-line 

business, which has been head turning. 

The Ferguson brothers not only are 

continuing a family business which 

remains as popular as ever, giving a lift 

and purpose to their lives and that of 

their offspring. Most of their friends and 

a doting constituency are proud, too, 

that this landmark remains healthy and 

continues to prosper. 

It would please their dad with the 

greatest of fulfillment to know what has 

come to pass with Dick Ferguson’s. And 

would he ever be overwhelmed that John 

(Dick’s son) and Ed Jr., (Ed’s son) walked on 

and played for the Dawgs. 

If you were to mention “Dick Ferguson,” 

in the same breath as the chapel bell, the 

hedges of Sanford Stadium, the Arch and 

“the tree that owns itself,” you would be 

identifying iconic names that have been 

part of Athens’ fabric for almost a century.

Dr. Kevin Ellis, I had him for at least six different marketing classes. He 

is a Marine from the Bronx and I was a Georgia Boy attending UGA 

straight out of the U.S. Navy but I believe there was a mutual respect 

there. I’ll never forget walking into his class on the morning of 9/11/01. 

My roommates and I had just watched the terror unfold on TV and I 

anxiously went to class to try to understand what had happened, I knew 

Dr. Ellis (being from NY and a Marine) could bring a perspective that no 

other could provide me that day. I requested a meeting with him a few 

days later because 9/11 weighed heavy on me and I was considering reenlisting. 

He convinced me to stay and finish my degree by showing me 

that it was the duty closest in sight and upon it’s completion my next duty 

would reveal itself to me. 

WHAT DO YOU CONSIDER YOUR GREATEST 

ACHIEVEMENT? 

A year after graduating from UGA, I decided to move to Orlando, Florida 

to learn how to become a golf club professional. At this point in my life, 

I had only been playing golf for four years and only broken eighty once. 

Two years later I passed the PGA’s player ability test, six years after taking 

up the game.

HORACE KING - A trailblazer who continues to ‘give out’!

In 1971, the seasons transitioned, 

summer turned to fall, the leaves: now 

red and orange, the temperature: a 

little cooler, and the University of Georgia: 

forever changed. Horace King alongside 

Richard Appleby, Chuck Kinnebrew, 

Clarence Pope and Larry West stepped 

onto campus as the first Black studentathletes 

to earn a scholarship and play 

football for Vince Dooley’s Bulldogs. 

“I thought I would end up at a place 

like North Carolina A&T, Grambling or 

Southern [University],” said King. “But, it 

was a big surprise when Vince Dooley 

and the Georgia Bulldogs came calling. 

If anybody else recruited me, my mother 

told me, ‘You need to just leave that alone 

cause you aren’t going to school there 

anyways!’ And she was the one in charge.” 

Thanks to King’s mother and Coach 

Dooley’s willingness to move forward and 

break the color barrier on the gridiron 

at UGA, the Athens native would join 

“The First Five” as a cornerstone of racial 

progression on this very campus. 

King was no stranger to the Classic City 

as he played high school football at Clarke 

Central just after the schools integrated 

in 1963; however, his passion for football 

in the city of Athens didn’t begin with 

the Gladiators. It began as a vendor and a 

sneaky fan in Sanford Stadium. 

“I guess the statute of limitations has 

run out on me at this point, but I used 

to sneak in Georgia games,” said King. 

“We used to dig holes under the fence, 

cover them with pinestraw, climb a tree, 

break a limb, or do whatever to get in 

those games. Then, I got older, and the 

athletic director at Burney-Harris school, 

E.T. Holmes, chose the football players to 

sell Cokes in Sanford Stadium. Once I sold 

my first basket of Cokes, I just went over 

with the regular students and watched 

the game. Now, I share with everyone, ‘I 

used to sneak into Georgia games, then 

sold Cokes in Georgia games, then played 

in Georgia games,’ and I was proud to do 

all three.” 

Upon his arrival at Georgia, King had 

the hometown support of family and 

friends when he took the field. The same 

friends that snuck in the stadium or sold 

Cokes alongside him remained common 

attendees at Sanford Stadium to watch 

their hometown hero represent the 

“G” that we all revere. Furthermore, no 

supporters were quite like King’s mother 

and father despite their differences in 

methods of cheering on their son. 

“I was most proud to see my mother 

sitting in the stands supporting me,” said 

King. “Likewise, my daddy was a great 

supporter too, but he didn’t go in the 

games with my mother because she 

would get excited and make too much 

noise for him. My daddy was sort of a 

quiet guy that didn’t respond too much 

to my success or my failures on the field. 

Rather, he went on the railroad tracks and 

watched the game over there.” 

The running back was a highly touted 

recruit out of Clarke Central side by side 

with two of the other First Five, Appleby 

and Pope, who were also Gladiators. As 

Dooley brought these five in and changed 

Georgia football for the better, the crew 

of trailblazers never viewed themselves as 

history-makers. On the contrary, they were 

just there to succeed in the classroom, 

succeed on the football field and work 

for an opportunity to play professionally 

or build the foundation of a career at this 

institution. 

“I never thought of it as being the first,” 

said King. “My focus was never to make 

history, but it was to be the best I could be 

and earn the opportunity to wear that red 

and black, play football for the University 

of Georgia on Saturdays, and aspire to play 

professionally. I was fortunate enough to 

achieve that goal, so… feat accomplished.” 

Regardless of UGA integrating 10 years 

prior to King and the rest of the First Five’s 

appearance on the field, racism was still 

prevalent on campus. King remarked that 

he remembers when Charlene Hill and 

Hamilton Holmes became the first Black 

Georgia students in 1961 and created a 

path for King and other young African- 

Americans at Georgia. Henceforth, it was 

his teachers that guided the road ahead 

for King prior to and during college. 

“I don’t recall one significant event 

[of racism],” said King. “However, at the 

athletic department, they had advisors 

who gave us a list of professors not to take 

classes from. It was eye-opening to realize 

that it definitely existed there, but man, 

my teachers taught us all they could about 

focusing on reaching that next level. It 

was unknown what was ahead, but they 

educated us on accepting the challenge 

and moving forward… one Horace King 

would not change the ratio at UGA. I could 

be the beginning, but just as my teachers 

all the way through had told me, my focus 

was to advance my future.” 

King closed with a quote that he’s taken 

with him throughout his life, “Give out, 

not up.” In the depths of a dark time in our 

nation’s history, this University’s history, 

King alongside four of his best friends 

became a face of change, forever altering 

Georgia’s trajectory on the football field 

and beyond. It was not to be the first, but 

in his words, “It was to be the best person 

I can be all the time, not just sometimes.” 

Rather than throwing in the towel when 

obstacles arose, King, with the support 

of family, friends, teachers and Coach 

Dooley, chose to give out. And give out, 

he did, pioneering a path for so many 

more Black student-athletes to chase their

A look back at what decided the game between Georgia and Alabama. 

4 - TURNOVERS 

‌1 - POINT LEAD 

Unfortunately, Georgia got dominated in the turnover department 

in Saturday’s night game. Forcing one tipped interception by Jalen 

Milroe, the team did not do enough to counteract the Dawgs’ four 

total turnovers. Carson Beck threw three total interceptions and 

fumbled once while scrambling out of the pocket on first and ten. 

The most crucial pick was thrown on first and ten in Alabama’s red 

zone with around 50 seconds left on the clock. Bobo and the offense 

schemed up a fade pass to Colbie Young, but the Tide’s Zabien 

Brown was able to turn around in time and intercept the throw to 

secure the win. 

‌Let’s end this column on a positive note. Although the Tide ended 

up on top, Georgia held a one point lead late in the fourth quarter. 

From going down 28 points, to taking a lead, the team never gave up. 

Leadership showed up. Linebacker Jalon Walker, while Georgia was 

still down 18, ran out to the offense during a time out. It was fourth 

down, and No. 11 was cheering on his teammates like no other. Those 

are the positives to find in such a heartbreaking loss. The Dawgs aren’t 

done yet.

If you haven’t heard by now, Bama receiver Ryan Williams is only 17 

years old. Fans knew he would be a player to watch. The Georgia 

secondary did their best to limit his big play potential. On Alabama’s 

game-winning drive, however, Williams went up and made a 

spectacular play to stay in bounds and reach the good guys’ end 

zone. He took Alabama’s final pass 75 yards to the house. 

‌28 - UNANSWERED POINTS TO START 

THE GAME 

When playing in the SEC, especially on the road, it is extremely 

difficult to play from behind early on. In this game, the Dawgs 

allowed the Tide to score 28 straight points before finally scoring 

midway through the second quarter. While much credit goes to 

Smart and his players for not giving up, it seems as if the odds were 

stacked against them from the beginning. From here on out, it will 

be critical for Georgia to perform better in the first half. Failure to do 

so will result in almost another certain loss with one of the hardest 

remaining schedules in college football. 

‌0 - SACKS 

Going into this matchup with the Tide, it was evident that 

containing Jalen Milroe would be the key factor for a Bulldog victory. 

Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, they were unable to sack Milroe, 

allowing him to throw for nearly 400 yards and rush for over 100 

yards. With the Alabama quarterback having as long as he wanted 

in the pocket, it allowed his receivers to find holes in the Bulldogs’ 

secondary for huge gains. Once adjusting in the second half, things 

slowed down for the Bama offense. Yet, going forward, the “Trench 

Dawgs” must be able to put pressure on opposing quarterbacks.

On Saturday night in Tuscaloosa, the first half made me wonder 

where the confident and talented Bulldogs hid. It shouldn’t 

have been surprising, given the performances we witnessed in 

the lead-up to the Bama loss. Georgia, a team we expected to 

dominate, was toyed with in the first half, a stark contrast to the 

teams Georgia fans have been accustomed to enjoying. 

As a game day photographer, I always position myself to 

shoot into the faces of the Georgia team, moving between 

end zones after each quarter. This tactic typically provides 

excellent opportunities to capture the Bulldogs’ offensive and 

defensive stars as they go about dismantling the hopes and 

dreams of opposing teams. However, this week, Georgia’s 

offense seemed stuck on the other end of the field for the entire 

half. Interceptions, fumbles, missed blocks, and muffed tackles 

punctuated the action as the Dawgs dug hole after hole for 

themselves on both sides of the ball. 

It is difficult to grasp the cause of Georgia’s recurring slow-start 

nightmare, but the condition is real. Yes, the Dawgs fought back 

and briefly took the lead in the closing minutes, but Saturday’s 

effort was not the brand of football that fans have grown used 

to seeing from Kirby’s teams. 

Enough of the questioning. Georgia is an excellent football 

team, and an undefeated season is not required to make the 

College Football Playoff. 

Kirby Smart has said several times that he doesn’t know the 

cause of the slow starts. If coaches can’t see the reason, it will 

be hard for the staff to fix it. However, there is one group that 

can fix it - team leadership. Georgia’s slow starts are due to 

something other than talent issues, coaching mismanagement 

or staff neglect. The problem resides inside the heads of the 

players on the field. If they can do it in the second half, they can 

do it in the first. 

The time to get to work is now. Auburn awaits.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER 

Dillon Bell - The junior from Houston, Texas showed once again Saturday 

why he is the go-to guy for the Bulldogs when something special is 

needed. Bell’s performance Saturday against Alabama was a career high 

100 yards receiving on five catches and one touchdown. Bell showed his 

toughness by consistently being open on Georgia’s fourth down plays, 

which resulted in a successful 5-for-5 on 4th down plays. Bell’s ability to run 

the ball gives Georgia a true threat in the backfield. We need his athletic 

ability and contribution to the offense, but his leadership might be the 

most important part of his role for the bulldogs. 

DEFENSIVE PLAYER 

Dan Jackson - The senior defensive back from North Hall and Gainesville, 

Georgia came into this game with 9 tackles on the season. After the game 

against Alabama, Dan had a career high 10 tackles with six solos and a 

tackle for loss. He had a true “Damn Good Dog“ performance. Jackson truly 

embodies the Bulldogs spirit by his physical play and his determination to 

never let up. He has come a long way. Without his performance Saturday 

versus Alabama, the Dawgs would’ve had no chance to get themselves back 

in the game. Coach Russell is damn proud of Dan, what a gutsy Bulldog 

performance. 

SPECIAL TEAM PLAYER 

Brett Thorson - Coming into the game against Alabama, the Bulldogs 

knew they needed it to be perfect on special teams. Brett Thorson once 

again performed like the great punters in the past at the University of 

Georgia. Coming into the Alabama game Thorson and the punt team had 

not allowed a yard of return all season long. Well, you can up that stat as 

Alabama one return for negative four yards. Truly a great performance 

from the punt coverage team led by Thorson. As I give this award to Brett, 

rest assured, the recognition goes to the 11 guys on the punt team. Keep 

up the great work. 

UNSUNG HERO OF THE GAME 

Larry Munson - We all have heroes in our life that help us through tough 

times. Saturday’s game against Alabama was a very, very tough time in 

the first half. As the second half unfolded, the Bulldogs played inspired 

and fought their way back into a game that seemed lost. Much like Larry 

Munson stating “Can you believe it? We’re still in this game!“ Georgia found 

themselves back in the game come late fourth quarter. Saturday was Larry 

Munson’s birthday, and I could feel the ghost of Munson watching over the 

Bulldogs as they clawed and scratched to get back in the game. Munson’s 

spirit was there and like so many times before Larry did everything he 

could do to help the Bulldogs win, we did not come away a tally in that 

column; however, as Larry would have said after the loss “We grew up a lot 

in the fourth quarter. Now, we gotta start getting ready for Auburn.”

And now we are through September, and head to the first Saturday 

of October. This is the month that is the heart and soul of college 

football, and there are a slew of tremendous conference matchups 

this weekend. Alabama was the team of the week. You better be ready 

every week, especially in the SEC. Kentucky had one of the big wins of 

this past weekend, upsetting Ole Miss in Oxford. A reminder, my top 

four is represented by a team from each of the four major conferences, 

because that’s who gets the four byes in the College Football Playoff. 

Plus, No. 12 - unless they are ranked higher - is the predicted Group 

of Five representative, because those leagues get one of the 12 spots. 

Enjoy every weekend. 

1. ALABAMA - The Crimson Tide jumped on Georgia 

28-0 in Tuscaloosa and chalked up a big win over the 

Bulldogs in the first top five matchup of the year. It’s off 

to Nashville now to take on Vanderbilt, as Alabama tries to make it 

5-0 and 2-0 in the SEC. 

2. OHIO STATE - The Buckeyes took down Michigan 

State 38-7 to make it 4-0 on the year. Ohio State looks 

like the best team in the Big Ten. They are very good at 

the wide receiver and running back positions. Iowa heads to the 

Horseshoe Saturday. 

3. BYU - The Cougars backed up their dominant win 

over Kansas State with a 34-28 victory over Baylor. The 

Big XII is wide open. BYU is off this week, enjoying 5-0. 

Then Arizona comes to Provo for a big conference showdown. 

4. MIAMI - In one of the most exciting, entertaining 

and controversial games of the year, Miami survived 

and escaped south Florida on a replay overturn 38-34 

win over Virginia Tech. The Hurricanes head west for an ACC game 

in Berkeley against Cal. 

5. TEXAS - It was not easy for the Longhorns, favored 

by five touchdowns, but they took care of Mississippi 

State 35-13. Texas is 5-0 and off this week. Then comes 

the big Red River Shootout with arch rival Oklahoma in what is 

now a marquee SEC game. 

6. TENNESSEE - The Volunteers certainly enjoyed 

their open date after Josh Heupel took Tennessee to 

Norman and soundly defeated the Sooners 25-15. It’s 

back to work now, and what could be a tricky game against Sam 

Pittman’s tough Arkansas Hogs. 

7. MISSOURI - Eli Drinkwitz has done an excellent 

job in CoMo, and the Tigers are 4-0. Though they got 

quite a scare last time out from Vandy. Now comes a 

big battle against Texas A&M in College Station. Luther Burden III is 

a fantastic wide receiver. 

8. GEORGIA - The Bulldogs fell behind by too much 

in Tuscaloosa, and the incredible 42-game regular 

season winning streak came to an end against the 

Crimson Tide. Now the attention turns to the ancient rival Auburn, 

as the Tigers visit Sanford Stadium. 

9. MICHIGAN - The Wolverines held off Minnesota for 

a tight 27-24 win at the Big House. Michigan jumped to 

a 21-0 lead but came out on top in a classic old Big Ten 

contest. Now comes another Big Ten game, an old Rose Bowl, against 

the Huskies in Seattle. 

10. SOUTHERN CAL - The Trojans bounced back 

from a tough, tough loss at Michigan to beat Wisconsin 

38-21, dominating the second half in Los Angeles. These 

two matchups, in this new world, felt like old Rose 

Bowls. Now it’s off to Minnesota Saturday. 

11. CLEMSON - Since losing the season opener to 

Georgia in Atlanta, the Tigers have been cooking 

offensively. Clemson took down Stanford in an ACC 

game to make it 3-1. The Tigers are licking their chops heading to 

Tallahassee to take on Florida State. 

12. JAMES MADISON - There was no letdown for the 

Dukes after the monumental win in Chapel Hill. James 

Madison flattened Ball State 63-7 to make it 4-0. Now it’s 

off to Lou Monroe as a heavy favorite again. This is a high octane 

offense at JMU.
