Scientists classify diamonds into two main “types” – type I and type II – based on the
presence or absence of nitrogen which can replace carbon atoms in a diamond’s atomic
structure. These two diamond types can be distinguished based on differences in their
chemical and physical properties. Type II diamonds contain little if any nitrogen and they
are subdivided into two groups (IIa and IIb) both of which are quite rare
(less than 2% of all gem diamonds).
Meeting this Moment
JEWISH FEDERATION’S IMPACT IN A CHALLENGING YEAR
San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria speaks to a crowd of more than 4,500
during San Diego’s Solidarity Vigil for Israel on October 10, 2023.
In a year marked by unprecedented challenges,
Jewish Federation of San Diego has demonstrated
what it truly means to meet the moment. From
the conflict in Israel to the alarming rise in
antisemitism both globally and here at home,
the resilience of the Jewish people has been put
to the test. But through the unwavering support
and generosity of the San Diego Jewish community,
Federation has been able to rise to these challenges and
continue its mission to foster thriving Jewish life in San
Diego, Israel, and beyond.
“As we look back on the past year, we recognize the
critical juncture we find ourselves in,” Federation
President & CEO Heidi Gantwerk shared with GB
Magazine. “For many Jews in San Diego, the past 12
months tested our mental, spiritual, and emotional
strength. Yet, in the face of adversity, we witnessed
a powerful resurgence of Jewish identity and an
increased desire for community connection. These
factors contributed to our Federation’s most successful
fundraising year to date, a testament to the trust and faith
our community places in us.”
Federation’s 2024 Annual Campaign raised a recordbreaking
$8.4 million, an incredible 175% increase
16 GBSAN.COM | OCTOBER 2024
over the previous year.
Including contributions
to its Israel Emergency
Fund – which raised
more than $9 million
in a few short weeks to
support relief efforts
across the Jewish state in
the wake of the horrific
events of October
7, 2023 – plus grant
revenues and directed
gifts, Federation secured
a total of over $22
million in the fiscal year
of July 2023 – June 2024.
Embodying its
new campaign
theme, “Meeting
this Moment,”
Federation is
focused on
addressing
immediate
needs while
laying the
groundwork
for long-term
community
Jewish Federation of
San Diego stands
ready to secure a
vibrant, resilient
future for the Jewish
community – both
locally and globally.
resilience. This forward-looking approach involves not
only emergency response but also proactive initiatives
to combat antisemitism, strengthen Jewish identity,
and deepen communal connections. As Federation sets
its sights on its next fiscal year, several transformative
initiatives are poised to make a lasting impact.
Among these is a groundbreaking approach to Holocaust
education, supported by the largest single donation in
Federation’s history. Soon, a dynamic mobile classroom
will travel across San Diego County, bringing modern,
immersive Holocaust education to learners of all ages
and backgrounds. This project is more than just a tribute
to history; it is a powerful, living commitment to the
fight against hate. This month’s cover photo poignantly
captures this mission: Gantwerk, alongside Federation
Board Chair David Bark and Campaign Co-Chairs Sonia
Israel and Jeff Schindler, stand before a somber Holocaust
memorial etched with the names of concentration
Community leaders join together for a heartwarming
Havdalah service during last year’s Federation 360 gala.
camps – a stark reminder of the importance of memory,
education, and action.
Federation is also expanding its programming to ensure
being Jewish is fun and joyful through meaningful
experiences. A new teen travel initiative will soon
take San Diego’s Jewish youth to Israel, offering
them transformative journeys that will deepen their
Jewish identities and inspire their future community
engagement. The organization is also launching a San
Diego chapter of Student to Student, a program designed
to foster understanding and break down barriers by
connecting Jewish teen ambassadors with non-Jewish
high school students across San Diego. Through personal
storytelling and open dialogue, the goal is to demystify
Judaism, challenge stereotypes, and empower students to
interrupt antisemitic remarks in their everyday lives.
As Federation prepares for the year ahead, it remains
unwavering in its mission to foster thriving Jewish life,
protect the community, and ensure that the lessons
of history inform the actions of today. In meeting this
moment, Jewish Federation of San Diego stands ready
to secure a vibrant, resilient future for the Jewish
community – both locally and globally. With the
continued generosity of its supporters, Federation is not
just responding to the challenges of today but building a
legacy of hope and strength for generations to come.
Cover Story
En un año marcado
por desafíos sin
precedentes, la Jewish
Federation de San
Diego ha demostrado
que se mantiene
a la altura de las
circunstancias. Desde el conflicto
en Israel al alarmante aumento
del antisemitismo, tanto mundial
como local, la resiliencia de la
gente judía fue puesta a prueba.
Gracias al inquebrantable apoyo
y generosidad de la comunidad
judía de San Diego, la Federation
tuvo la oportunidad de superar los
desafíos y continuar con su misión
de promover la vida judaica en San
Diego, Israel y demás lugares.
“Al analizar el año que pasó,
podemos ver el momento crítico en
que nos encontramos”” le comenta
a la revista Giving Back su CEO
y presidente, Heidi Gantwerk.
“Para muchos judíos de San Diego,
los últimos doce meses fueron
una prueba para su salud mental,
emocional y espiritual. Aun así,
Jewish Federation of
San Diego stands
ready to secure a
vibrant, resilient
future for the Jewish
community – both
locally and globally.
Federation
lanzó su
campaña
“Meeting this
que se enfoca en las necesidades
inmediatas, pero al mismo
tiempo va preparando el camino
para que la comunidad tenga
resiliencia a largo plazo. Esta
manera de mirar el futuro
implica no solo actuar frente
a las emergencias, sino tener
iniciativas proactivas para
combatir el antisemitismo,
fortalecer la identidad judía
y profundizar las conexiones
comunales. Con la mira puesta
en el próximo año fiscal, varias
iniciativas transformadoras
están llamadas a tener un
Entre estas nuevas iniciativas
enfocadas en la educación sobre
de la Federation, en breve va a
Safeguarding Southern California’s
Flourishing Marine Life
From
playful
to majestic
gray,
blue, and
humpback
whales, the coastal waters
of Southern California
have been called the blue
Serengeti, serving as a
superhighway of migration
and feeding for wildlife
throughout the year. As
Southern Californians, we
are so fortunate to not only
have such intimate access
to view these magnificent
creatures, but to also live
alongside the 17,000 acres
of Marine Protected Areas
(MPAs) off San Diego’s coast.
the Executive Director of the ocean conservation group WILDCOAST, I am
proud that we will celebrate our 25th anniversary in 2025. This stronghold of
marine biodiversity makes Southern California an iconic destination for ocean
tourism activities, from kayaking and paddleboarding to sunset cruises and
whale-watching.
Thanks to conservation pioneer and zoologist Ray Gilmore of the San Diego
Natural History Museum, the whale-watching industry actually began right
here in San Diego in the 1950s. Since then, the industry has expanded

Gray Whales on their
migration past San Diego
rapidly, marking it as one of the most popular - and lucrative
- tourism activities across coastal Southern California.
Such tours can often spot large dolphin pods, gray whales
migrating from Mexico to Alaska in the spring, blue whales
visiting in the early summer to feed on our krill-rich waters,
humpbacks enjoying the abundant food source, and even rare
sightings of orcas.
Although regulations require boats to stay at least 100
yards (about one football field) away from whales, a lack of
enforcement means many boats and tour operators disregard
this rule, often in pursuit of the perfect social media photo
for their guests. Whale-watching boat traffic like this can
create an intensely stressful environment for these majestic
animals, leading to noise pollution, chemical fuel pollution,
displacement, disruption of feeding and resting, and even boat
strikes. These disturbances have a significant and direct impact
on the health, reproductive rate, and lifespan of these creatures.
California
Sea Lion
Underscoring a commitment to serve as defenders of the
ocean, WILDCOAST is calling on tour operators, residents,
and visitors nationally and internationally to advocate for
responsible whale watching, adhere to best practices, and
prioritize safety for all wildlife and humans so that marine
mammals can be safe in their natural habitat.
evolved into one of the
largest culinary festivals
of impact in the country,
attracting over 11,000
food and wine enthusiasts
from both sides of the
US/Mexico border.
Since its inception in
2004, the San Diego
Food + Wine Festival has
garnered accolades from
renowned publications.
Each year, the festival
raises funds to support
the development
of San Diego’s
hospitality
workforce,
providing
scholarships
for line cooks,
servers, culinary
advance their
careers, creating
a ripple effect
that benefits
small business
owners,
restaurateurs, and
the community
at large.
This year, there will be several new elements to
celebrate its 20th anniversary.
The festival will team up with KPBS to deliver a
groundbreaking summit to discuss the future of food
with celebrity chefs, advocates,
farmers, and more. The Baja
Culinary Expedition will share a
journey through Michelin Guide
Mexico with acclaimed chefs and
winemakers. The festival kickoff
event will feature exceptional
James Beard Award recognized
chef and beverage talents, as
well as hundreds of wineries and
spirits pouring their best vintages
and varietals for guests. The
Coronado Island Film Festival
will screen food inspired films
during this year’s festival. Creator
Live will gather top influential
creators in the culinary, travel
and lifestyle spaces for a day of
master classes, workshops, and
brand experiences designed to
educate and inspire the food
creator community.
The festival’s partnership with
Southwest Airlines has expanded
its reach, enabling talented chefs
and culinary influencers nationwide to participate.
This collaboration helps maximize the organization’s
achievements
is the Trailblaze Challenge (TBCSD), a 28-mile hike
that raises funds for children battling critical illnesses.
Through this program, Wheelhouse gives its members
and employees the opportunity to join the Wheelhouse
About San Diego
HELLO WORLD?
SAN DIEGO CALLING
BY KEN KRAMER
They were both ugly and magnificent. Considered by
some to be an atrocity on the East San Diego landscape,
others living miles around remember them as a kind of
visual accompaniment to childhood. At night, their red
lights, seen from a bedroom window, were as constant
and mysterious as the stars that lay beyond. Three 600-
foot towers arranged in a triangle in Chollas Heights
dominated the nearby skyline for nearly 80 years.
It was a Navy thing. That is about all most of us knew. It was some kind
of giant and super-powerful radio station that would surely toast you if
you got too close. There must have been guards all around the buildings,
we figured, because from those towers they were sending coded
messages to submarines and stuff.
In the decades that followed, the Navy experimented
with different frequencies and communication
modes as the work done at Chollas unquestionably
contributed to advances in radio technology. But
eventually the station was deemed unnecessary and
too expensive, and all operations ceased on the final
day of September 1992.
Three years later on Veterans Day, thousands of San
Diegans gathered from rooftops in Lemon Grove to
beach chairs along College Avenue, to watch as the
towers were toppled by explosive charges.
Navy Building at Chollas
Radio Station in 1947.
In fact, they dated back to 1916, when the radio station
housed in an adjacent military building was the most
powerful in North America. Service personnel working
at the radio plant could enjoy recreational facilities,
including the heated swimming pool fed with water used
to cool the massive transmitter itself.
For the most part, the Naval Radio Transmitting Facility
at Chollas Heights provided routine communication to
and from shore operations and ships in the Pacific. But
on December 7, 1941, word of the Japanese attack on
Pearl Harbor was first flashed around the globe from
those very towers. Although radio engineers would
point out that the towers themselves were just support
structures for a triatic array of interconnected wires, strung
at the very top between them and collectively weighing
more than a ton. The actual signals
radiated from those wires.
Today only a top portion of one of the towers remains
as an historical display near the administrative office
for Naval Housing at 3251 Transmitter Road, in the
very building which once housed the station itself.
On weekdays, when the office is typically open,
visitors can ask to see an area set aside for photos and
memorabilia from the glory days of the place. My guess
is, it will provide a sense of history, and, if you have
been in San Diego long enough, some memories.
Ken Kramer is the creator and
host of Ken Kramer’s About
San Diego, seen Thursday
nights at 8:00 on KPBS-TV.
He has been presenting
stories about the history of
our area since the 1970s.
At the time of their creation, these metal
giants rising from open space inspired a
kind of awe in the population and were
a source of great pride to San Diego
officialdom. On the day when initial
testing of the 200-thousand-watt spark
transmitter began, prominent citizens
including representatives of the Chamber
of Commerce gathered at the facility to
hail San Diego’s role in the miracle of
radio communication. Mayor Edwin
Capps proclaimed, “Space has been
annihilated and the Atlantic and Pacific
seaboards are as one.”
Transmitter building
houses a museum today.
Heroes
Freedom Dogs
MEET TRAINER KATIE STOLL
It would be hard
to downplay the
impact Katie
Stoll’s trainees
have had once
you have heard
about dogs like
Abe. “Abe helped
save the life of
both his Freedom
Dogs participant’s
roommate, as well
as his participant,
during two separate
occasions. Abe is
incredibly intuitive
and has an innate
ability to alert his
participant when he
senses something is
wrong.”
If Abe did not get
a medal (or a nice
Katie with NoTorious
bone…) for his
efforts, perhaps
Katie should. With more than 14 years of dog
training experience, Katie has spent a majority of
that time helping to prepare her furry friends for a
life as a devoted part of the Freedom Dogs program.
The work has
been a big part
of her life from a
fairly young age.
“I began my
career training
dogs in 2006,
shortly after
graduating
high school. I
worked for a
pet store, where
I gained a lot
of experience
teaching
classes and
private training
sessions.” Since
then, Katie has
struck out on
her own and is
now certified
as a Karen
Pryor Academy
Certified
Training Partner, KPA-CTP. And after joining
Freedom Dogs in 2011, she has now become
their lead trainer. Apart from being particularly
rewarding, it is a full-spectrum position.
68 GBSAN.COM | OCTOBER 2024
“I am in charge of leading
and growing our training
program, which includes
tasks such as conducting
training classes, developing
curriculum and workshops
for our trainers, and
evaluating our dogs. I also
raise and train puppies for
the organization, as well
as assist with transitioning
dogs to our participants. I
have assisted with raising
and training over 10
Freedom Dogs throughout
the years.”
But apart from the
satisfaction she has had
from working with all those
lovable creatures, she also
relishes the interaction she
has had with her fellow
trainers. “Our trainers are
all volunteers, and the
time and effort they put
into this organization is
such a testament to what
amazing human beings
they all are. I love that I
have the opportunity to
learn from all of them, and
to implement their skills
and knowledge into our
training program.”
All Freedom Dogs trainers
are all volunteers, and the
time and effort they put
into this organization is a
testament to what amazing
human beings they all are.
Among the many moments
she treasures throughout
her history with Freedom
Dogs, is her memory of the
very first dog she got to
assist with. Jobie, a small
female black lab became
one of her landmark
experiences. “Jobie ended
up getting matched with
a First Sergeant that came
into our program, and I
assisted with the transition
process.” she remembers.
“Jobie ended up being
such a huge part of that
participant’s recovery, that
he credits her with his ability
to return to active duty.”
Katie’s best friend NoTorious
(“Tori for short!”) is a
10-year-old black lab she has
raised from a puppy, who
not only accompanies her on
offroad adventures, but
also has a paw in helping
her to train the new dogs
that enter the program –
which is her favorite part
of her job. “Being that I
am a huge Labrador and
puppy enthusiast, getting
to spend time with these
amazing dogs and help
raise puppies is something
I thoroughly enjoy!”
Run for Hope this Thanksgiving
Take a moment to transport to another
place and time. Picture yourself
standing on the Prado Bridge at Balboa
Park, with the sun rising over the
California Tower in the distance. A hit
song blares on the speakers, and you
throw your arms up in the air with
joy. Thousands of community members surround you
in matching race shirts and costumes, singing along
with smiles on their faces. This is the “Run for Hope”
SDBG recently
extended
partnerships with
the City of Encinitas
(EUSD) to enhance
planting native species, improving wildlife habitats, and
enhancing water and soil quality, while also providing
new opportunities for community recreation and
Since 2020, SDBG staff and volunteers have worked with
the City of Encinitas to restore public spaces, removing
invasive plants and installing thousands of native plants
grown at SDBG from seeds collected in public parks near
Moonlight Beach. The renewed partnership with the City
will continue to improve these wild habitats, while also
adding restoration activities at Oak Crest Park and around
improving ten acres
of canyon habitat,
an ecosystem that
Partnering For Compassionate
Care For All Children
A heartfelt congratulations
to the Youth Philanthropy
Council (YPC), California’s
largest kid-run nonprofit, for
leading the charge as this year’s
presenting sponsor of San Ysidro
Health’s Emerald Ball, the 55th
Anniversary Gala. San Diego’s
future shines brighter thanks to the
incredible efforts of these young
philanthropists, who have united
to improve children’s healthcare for
all in our community.
The Emerald Ball, which was co-chaired by YPC
members Augustus Holm and
James Farrell, was a resounding
success! On August 10, over 700
San Diegans came together to
support vital and countywide
children’s medical, dental and
behavioral health services. With
the generosity and commitment
of the YPC, San Ysidro Health
reached an incredible milestone
- raising $1 million to expand
essential, pediatric healthcare
services across the county. The
Emerald Ball was not just a
celebration of 55 years of compassionate care; it was
a testament to our shared commitment to building a
healthier tomorrow for our kids.
The Power of Kids
Helping Kids
The YPC demonstrated
that when young people
come together, they create
waves of change. What
could be more powerful
than kids helping kids?
Their leadership and
dedication to improving
children’s health is
inspiring, proving that age
is just a number when it
comes to making a meaningful difference.
A special highlight of the evening was the YPC’s car
sweepstakes, which gave one lucky winner a pre-loved
Honda Civic, generously donated by Honda of El
Cajon. Every dollar raised from this exciting initiative
directly supports San Ysidro Health, making an
immediate impact on the lives of children and families
in our community. Who knew winning a car could also
mean helping kids access life-saving care?
A Legacy of Compassionate Care
For 55 years, San Ysidro Health has been at the heart
of our community, providing compassionate care to
children and families.
It all began with seven
determined mothers from
San Ysidro, who banded
together to ensure their
children had access
to healthcare after the
community’s only doctor
left. From that small but
powerful beginning, San
Ysidro Health has grown
into a cornerstone of
care in San Diego County,
offering medical, dental,
and behavioral health
services to those who need
it most.
Building a Brighter Future
Despite San Ysidro Health’s
growth over the decades,
the challenge remains -
ensuring that every child
has access to essential
healthcare. However, with
the continued support of
the YPC and our incredible community, they are more
than ready to meet that challenge head-on. Together, we
are shaping a brighter, healthier future for San Diego’s
children, helping them grow up strong, resilient, and
ready to take on the world.
As such, school pantries offer a
much-needed support system
twice a month and run by school
staff or parents, school pantries
use spaces on campus, such as
auditoriums or parking lots, to
distribute nutritious, healthy
food. Parents and members of the community can pick
