If you want to discover the Alpine world at its best, you’ll

soon realise there’s no escaping the Gornergrat (3,039 metres

above sea level).

With its sunny viewing platform, accessible all year round,

the Gornergrat is a top excursion destination – and not

just because of its altitude.

Surrounded by 29 four-thousand-metre peaks, Switzerland's

highest mountain, the Dufourspitze (4634 metres

above sea level), and the second largest glacier in the Alps,

the Gorner Glacier, it offers a mountain panorama that

could not be more breathtaking. The Gornergrat Bahn has

been guaranteeing that even the journey to the panoramic

mountain will be a top-class experience for over 125

years.

The lower terminus of Europe’s highest outdoor cog railway

is in the well-known Valais holiday resort of Zermatt.

Trains run every 24 minutes during the high season, covering

a distance of 9,339 metres.

Negotiating impressive bridges, galleries and tunnels and

surrounded by idyllic forests and Alpine meadows, the line

passes stone gorges and mountain lakes. And everywhere

you look – majestic mountain giants, with the Matterhorn

as the crowning glory.

on the Matterhorn. Get up close to the real Matterhorn

with a digital telescope. Or float virtually over high-Alpine

glacier landscapes as a paraglider. The world of adventure

on the Gornergrat promises this and much more.

For travellers with a ticket up to the Gornergrat, admission

is included in the ticket. For travellers with a ticket for

sections without the Gornergrat, with Gornergrat Railway

season tickets and with ski passes, the following admission

prices apply:

ZOOOM level 1: Four Seasons film

The historic locomotive 3003 has been on the Gornergrat

since August 2023. It was repaired and gilded – in the

truest sense of the word. At the end of a short themed

trail with 7 stations that tell exciting stories about the

railway, the locomotive is ready to go downhill for impressive

souvenir photos with the Matterhorn and breathtaking

views.and breathtaking views. The themed

trail to the Golden Spot is open all year around.

Alpine charm in a unique and luxurious ambience

On arrival at the 3100 Kulmhotel Gornergrat, you will be

served an extended aperitif with Valais specialities. The

journey then continues to Rotenboden station.

Winter

The highest sledging run in Switzerland, the snowshoe

trail, the winter hiking trail and the train to Riffelberg are

waiting to be explored and offer adventures for young

and old.

Summer

A one-hour hike along Lake Riffelsee allows you to admire

the most impressive reflection of the Matterhorn. The

route leads directly to Riffelberg.

Enjoy a three-course gourmet meal at the Hotel Riffelhaus

1853, before travelling on to the Restaurant Alphitta on

the Riffelalp. Enjoy dessert and coffee with an ideal view

of the Matterhorn. The excursion ends with a relaxing return

journey to Zermatt on Gornergrat Railway.

Tip: Start the extended aperitif by 11 am for complete

enjoyment.

Every day until the snow falls

Strolling through the Alpine Garden at the Rotenboden station

at 2800 m above sea level feels like a walk in paradise.

The Alpine Garden offers a view that takes your breath

away and the Matterhorn, the Riffelhorn and the Riffelsee

seem close enough to touch.

Nature lovers will find unique high alpine vegetation here.

Some plants thrive exclusively here. The Alpine Garden covers

more than 5,000 square metres and is the highest Alpine

Garden in Europe. The flora on the Gornergrat is one of

the richest in species in the Swiss Alps and is unique because

of its special location. Here, many plant species grow

much higher than in comparable areas and it is a pleasure

to explore them.

To immerse yourself even further in the world of alpine

plants, numerous signs with QR codes have been set up

along the way, which tell you exciting facts about the flora

and allow you to admire the plants from all sides even when

they are not in bloom.

Code of conduct

Plant life at 2800 metres above sea level is hard and

fragile, and visitor pressure on the Gornergrat is high. In

order to preserve and protect this unique natural heritage,

the following rules must be observed:

• Keep to the paths at all times – stepping on the plants

damages / kills them

• Do not pick plants in the Alpine Garden

• Keep dogs on a leash and hold children by the hand

• Don’t leave any rubbish behind

• Please do not touch plants or signs

Stone towers are found in all populated areas of the

world. This is also the case on the Gornergrat below the

ZOOOM building. Who can create the tallest stone tower?

Rub noses with the Blacknose sheep

Between the end of June and mid-September, around 125

Blacknose sheep graze on the Gornergrat.

Meet the Sheep

It’s a picture that doesn’t exist anywhere else in the world:

Blacknose sheep that are at home high above Zermatt and

with a view of the Matterhorn. With their spiral-shaped

horns, fluffy wool and black patches, the Blacknose sheep

are something very special.

From the end of June to September, they graze between

the Gornergrat and Riffelberg stations and look forward

to welcoming visitors. Thanks to GPS trackers in their

collars, the cute sheep can be located. A shepherdess

accompanies the sheep on their adventures so the cuddly

four-legged friends are not alone. Six days a week, she

tells visitors exciting stories from their everyday

lives and is happy to answer any questions they may have.

Guided walks can be organised on request.

can be found at 11 interpretation panels dotted along the

path between the Gornergrat and Riffelberg. Duration

Experience an unforgettable sunrise at Lake Riffelsee with

information from our local guide. The offer can be booked

either with a delicious breakfast buffet at the 3100

Kulmhotel or without breakfast.

An excursion to the stars

At the 3100 Kulmhotel Gornergrat, the host awaits visitors

with a delicious buffet of fondue chinoise. This is followed

by a tasty dessert. The evening will be complemented by

stories by Peter Salzmann. He is a star guide and explains

the constellations in connection with Greek mythology.

In good weather, the terrace offers a spectacular view of

the starry sky. Visiting the dome room and exploring the

observatory with the telescope are another special highlight

– including expert commentary.

Switzerland’s highest sledging run

Experience winter in a very special way – on the highest

sledging run in Switzerland. With a length of 1.6 km, the

10-minute or so descent from Rotenboden (2,815 metres)

above sea level to Riffelberg (2,582 metres above sea

level) is great fun for all ages. Trains run every 10 minutes

between Riffelberg up to Rotenboden. Rotenboden station

is where you can rent well-maintained sledges and

set off.

Gornergrat Station

The 3100 Kulmhotel Gornergrat is located at an altitude

of 3100 metres above sea level and is the highest hotel in

the Swiss Alps, right at the Gornergrat station. Its location

and views of the mountain peaks make it a top destination

for mountaineers and skiers. A visit to the first-class

restaurants of the Kulmhotel promises an unforgettable

experience. The hotel is just a few metres from the Gornergrat

railway station and can be reached either on foot

or by lift.

saycheese!

At the 3100 Kulmhotel Gornergrat, the restaurant

“saycheese!” provides seating space for 40 guests and offers

a selection of classic Swiss dishes made from local

cheeses. Guests are served at their tables and the sun terrace

offers a view of the Matterhorn. The restaurant is

barrier-free and suitable for vegetarians.

Glacier Alpine Kitchen

The Glacier Alpine Kitchen restaurant at the 3100 Kulmhotel

opened in September 2024 and offers 80 indoor

seats, 40 of which are in the group area, as well as 80 outdoor

seats. With waiter service and classic Alpine cuisine,

the restaurant invites you to enjoy a Valais gourmet experience.

The dishes are based on regional, sustainable ingredients.

Tiger Bowl

The Asian fusion restaurant offers 12 seats inside and a

self-service counter. Healthy, fresh and protein-rich meals

take centre stage, served in recyclable bowls. There are

also vegan, gluten-free and lactose-free options, perfect

for guests looking for sustainable and diet-conscious dishes.

The Riffelberg station, situated at an altitude of 2582 metres,

Riffelberg is historically significant because Zermatt's first

mountain hotel was built here. There are three outstanding

restaurants here that offer a variety of culinary experiences:

Circus Chez Heini

The Circus Chez Heini opened on 1 February 2024 and invites

you to a unique experience in the former kiosk at

Riffelberg station under the motto “Cirque du Chez Heini”.

With indoor and outdoor seating and a view of the

Matterhorn, special cold and hot drinks are served as well

as snacks such as hot dogs and sandwiches. For more information

Buffet & Bar Riffelberg

The family-friendly mountain restaurant, located next to

the Riffelberg railway station and close to the summit station

of the Riffelberg Express, offers a spaetzle stand and

indoors and outdoors and serves regional and Swiss cuisine

in a self-service style with vegetarian options. The

terrace offers a magnificent view of the Matterhorn. For

Riffelhaus 1853

At the Riffelhaus 1853, guests can enjoy traditional Swiss

cuisine of the highest standard. With 70 seats indoors and

outdoors, the restaurant offers a special ambience. Specialities

such as dried meat and sausage variations from

local meat dryers are served. The restaurant is located in

the Hotel Riffelhaus 1853, near Riffelberg station and the

Situated at an altitude of 2211 metres above sea level, the

Riffelalp is an ideal starting point for easy hikes and a

popular meeting point for skiers in winter, who enjoy the

magnificent view of the Matterhorn over a drink. The Riffelalp

right at the tree line offers an impressive view. At

this station, you can look forward to four first-class restaurants

offering a wide range of culinary options.

Ristorante Al Bosco

The Ristorante Al Bosco offers 60 indoor and 90 outdoor

seats, combining Alpine chic with Swiss and Italian cuisine.

Ski-in/ski-out in winter, popular with sun lovers and Matterhorn

lovers in summer. It serves Italian classics, daily

specials, Matterhorn pizza and the Riffelalp “gamelle”.

Fondue and raclette are also available in summer. The restaurant

is located in the Riffelalp Resort, near the Riffelalp

station, and can be reached in 10 minutes on foot or by

Restaurant Alexandre

At the Riffelalp Resort, 150 guests can enjoy regional and

Mediterranean specialities indoors. The Alexandre restaurant,

which is open in the evening, is open to hotel and

external guests with a reservation. The menu offers fresh

products from both freshwater and salt water, as well as

beef from local Riffelalp cattle. Vegan menus are also

available. The dessert and starter buffet complete the offer.

The resort is located near the Riffelalp station of the

Gornergrat Railway and can be reached in 10 minutes on

Alphitta

The Alphitta mountain restaurant offers 100 seats on the

terrace, 70 seats inside, traditional cuisine with a modern

touch, a sunny terrace and panoramic views of the Matterhorn.

Live music ensures an entertaining atmosphere. The

restaurant is family-friendly, suitable for vegetarians and

Chämi-Hitta

With 80 indoor and 120 outdoor seats, the Chämi-Hitta

serves regional cuisine. Ideal for après-ski, coffee breaks,

lunches or celebrations, it is located right next to the ski

the apple strudel is an insider tip. The restaurant is familyfriendly

and suitable for vegetarians and is around 15 minutes

Zermatt has excellent rail connections to/from many Swiss

cities and airports. From Visp / Brig – where the international

lines from the North (Germany / Lötschberg), the

West (Lake Geneva) and the South (Simplon / Milan) meet

– the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn brings visitors to Zermatt

every thirty minutes. The journey through the wild and

romantic Visp valley is an experience – and the holidays

haven’t even started! Lined up in a chain of tourist pearls:

the old mountain guide village of St. Niklaus, the sun-soaked

terrace of Grächen, quaint yet never boring Randa,

and finally up-and-coming Täsch.

Since Zermatt is car-free, individual travellers and groups

travel from Täsch on the Zermatt shuttle. In Täsch, 2,100

covered parking spaces are available at the Matterhorn

Terminal Täsch. 365 days / 24 hours. Parking space reservation

luggage vehicle by prior arrangement.

• The hotel returns the VIP group luggage vehicle to

Zermatt station immediately after unloading.

• Passengers take the Zermatt Shuttle to Täsch and wait

in the station hall of the P MTT.

• The coach driver takes the free bus to the P2 Schali

car park.

• He/she drives the coach out (parking ticket ready for

the barrier).

• Passenger collection at the passenger transfer facility

in front of the P MTT.

• Departure of the coach from the passenger transfer

facility.

With luggage

• The hotel obtains a VIP group luggage vehicle from

Zermatt railway station.

• The luggage is loaded onto the VIP group luggage

vehicle at the hotel.

• The hotel brings the VIP group luggage vehicle to

Zermatt station.

• Employees of the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn accompany

the VIP group luggage vehicle in the Zermatt

Shuttle to the Täsch passenger transfer facility.

• The luggage is transferred from the VIP group

luggage vehicle to the coach.

Free bus

The free bus between the P MTT and P2 Schali runs daily

between 8 am and 8 pm.
