Recently, I came across an encouraging reflection
from a friend who has faced some difficult
challenges that have been unpredictable and, at
times, traumatic.
I wanted to share some of his reflections which
might be meaningful to those experiencing difficult
times. These principles aren’t exhaustive,
and they won’t necessarily work for everyone,
but they’ve been vital to my friend and, hopefully,
will be a help to some of us in challenging
times.
Sickness is bad, but dependence is good. It’s
natural to want to escape hard times as quickly
as possible. Yet, the knowledge of our weakness
in these times can foster spiritual growth by dismantling
self-reliance. As Tim Keller once said,
"You’ll never find out that Jesus is all you need until
you’re in a situation where Jesus is all you’ve
got."

Plodding is victory (1 Cor 4:11-13, 1 Pet 2:19).
In times of sudden pain or unpredictability,
emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion can
take over. In those moments, survival itself is a
victory. Holding on in hope is triumph, with
God’s everlasting arms sustaining us.

Lament is a means of grace. Lament is
more than just an outlet for grief. Through
the Psalms and the encouragement of others,
lament can be seen as a way to grow
deeper in Christ. It becomes a means of
grace that leads to spiritual maturity.
The stabilising effect of specific Scripture.
Many find strength in clinging to particular
Bible verses during difficult times,
allowing those Scriptures to shape their
hearts. Passages such as 2 Corinthians 12:1-
10 can provide a profound lifeline, weaving
together themes of God's sovereignty, spiritual
warfare, and the discipline of the Lord.
Living within seasons. Ecclesiastes 3:1-8
speaks to the reality that life is full of different
seasons, and wisdom lies in recognising
and living within those seasons. Sometimes,
survival in the moment is enough.
Fresh grace is available for each day,
providing the strength needed to move forward.
The power of worship-focused theology.
Suffering can narrow one’s vision and lead
to self-preoccupation, but focusing on the
beauty and majesty of God can be freeing.
Worshipping God and lifting one’s eyes to
His greatness is a powerful antidote. In
Job’s story, God’s response to suffering was
a reminder of His greatness.
The mystery of gospel advance. Philippians
1:12 offers an encouraging reminder
that limitations and struggles can advance
the gospel. Restrictions aren’t merely endured;
they can be used by God in mysterious
ways to further His kingdom.
Wherever we find ourself today, may we
discover hope and light in the midst of our
struggles. As we wait for the ultimate renewal
of all things, the cry remains: “Come,
Lord Jesus. Amen.”
The grounding effect of others’ struggles.
Hearing the stories of those who have
faced even greater challenges can help
guard against self-pity and resentment.
While suffering is not a competition, seeing
the resilience of others reminds us that it’s
part of living in a groaning world (Rom 8:19
-22). Above all, there is comfort in meditating
on Christ, who suffered in ways beyond
comprehension.

Fruit Cocktail
Oct - Nov 2024
I like fruit (and cocktails but that’s another
story.) Our wonderful creative God has
seen fit to bless us with an enormous variety
of fruit. There is nothing so fine as a cherry
from the West Indies, a pear from Plymouth
or a banana from Ghana. Wouldn’t it be sad
to live on a planet where there was only one
kind of fruit (a Neptunian apple, a Venusian
melon)? But we on Earth have that diversity
of fruitiness which reflects God’s abundance.
Fruit not only tastes delicious, look gorgeous in their myriad of colours but their health
benefits are endless. So hail the humble fruit.
Scripture uses the fruit image when it talks about ‘the fruit of the Spirit’ and St. Paul lists
them in his letter to the Galatians in Chapter 5 Verses 22-23.“But the fruit of the Spirit is
love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.”
Often in the Bible there is a “but” and this one follows a list of things that are not good because
they are self serving things. But this fruit Paul mentions is God-centred. Yet when one
looks at the list of the Spirit’s fruit it does seem rather daunting. Patience? Goodness? Self
control? (Some of my challenges in life!)
The fruit of the Spirit is also challenging in that it is a singular word and not a plural. One
can’t say, I’ll take love, peace and joy without the other elements. The fruit is one bunch,
you have to accept it all or nothing. It is like a bunch of fruit consisting of an apple, a pear, a
mango etc. on the same tree with the same root, co-existing together. That should be what
our Christian life looks like. It should be like a fruit cocktail, all mixed together, stirred not
shaken.
So do we stand around desperately trying to produce this kind of fruit in our lives like a
New Year’s resolution that soon fades away or is there help at hand? Well, there is no magic
formula but here is a suggestion. Producing fruit takes time. It takes all our Christian
lives to develop the fruit of the Spirit. One day we will have that full harvest perfected in
Christ but for now we live in the world with all its ups and downs. If we see growing fruit in
our lives rejoice, even if it appears small, we should be grateful for every grapeful. Are you
showing more patience than you did last year? Be glad!
But the main thing of course is that it is not called the fruit of the Spirit for nothing. The fruit
of the Spirit is the result of the Holy Spirit at work in our lives. When we come to Christ, the
Holy Spirit fills us and He begins to produce good fruit in us. He begins to work in us, sanctifying
us and making us more like Jesus. As we pursue God and follow after Him with our
whole hearts, the Holy Spirit continues to produce more and more good fruit in us. This
means we can’t produce the fruit of the Spirit in our lives through our strength. We always
need to be asking God for more fruitiness in our lives. It’s only with His help we will cultivate
the fruit that is not only health giving for other people but in the end ourselves too.

Tribute to Henry Girling
Oct - Nov 2024
Henry was not only a beloved friend to many of us, he
was also deeply involved in numerous aspects of our
church life, ranging from pub quiz master to prayer
meeting coordinator, and much more in between.
Trying to recount all the ways he was a blessing to our
family life as a church, in the short space I have here,
wouldn't do justice to his involvement and I’d be sure
to miss something.
One of his roles, several years ago, was newsletter editor,
and he was a big contributor to our newsletter
even when he wasn’t editing it. As a tribute in his
memory, we've compiled a selection of his articles
over the years, available on the church website. There
are some real gems—I particularly enjoyed the
‘Things I Learned on Holiday’ series. He had an incredible
ability to be both profound and funny.
Earlier this June, Henry sent an article to Elisabeth for
publication in the October Newsletter. His email attaching the article said, “A bit early but
when inspiration strikes…”. We're thankful that inspiration struck early and that Henry sent
it before he became unwell, allowing us to enjoy a final thought from our beloved and
dearly missed brother.
Join us on October 11 th at 11:30am in church for Henry’s funeral service, where we will
gather to grieve with sadness and hope; giving thanks for him and celebrating that he is
now with the Lord.
I'd like to conclude this tribute by quoting directly from Henry’s article,
“Follow The Yellow Brick Road”, written in June 2022:
“And at the end of the road? Well it’s something much
better than the city of Oz, it’s something much better than
Hollywood, Tinseltown, the city of dreams. It’s where our
heavenly Father dwells, it’s actually being in His presence
in the heavenly kingdom. In most films, there is a happy
ending. Do the followers of Jesus have one? Indeed, it’s the
greatest happy ending of all time. There’s not really a film
that captures this wonderful and true story but there is a
book. I think it’s called the Bible. Well worth a read!”
While we mourn Henry’s loss, we also celebrate that he
is now 'where our heavenly Father dwells', and take comfort
in knowing that we will see him again.

Parent and Toddler outing
to Swanley Park
Oct - Nov 2024
One fine, sunny Tuesday in June, St Mildred's
Parent and Toddler group visited
Swanley Park. We met in the car park
and took the little train to the top of the
hill. The "St Mildred's Special" was
driven by our own Chris Coutts, assisted
by Henry Girling. Train rides were
available all day.
We enjoyed the playground,
boating lake,
cafe and splashpool.
There was lots of laughter,
ice cream and
fun. After a picnic lunch,
we took the train back
down the hill and made
our way home.
Thank you to all concerned. Most of all praise and thanks to God for fine
weather and a lovely day.

Welcome to Anna and Jim Mills
Oct - Nov 2024
A couple of months ago we had
the pleasure of welcoming Anna
and Jim to St. Mildred’s.
They shared with us a little about
themselves and we look forward to
getting to know them better.
A special cake was made to mark
this day.
“Thank you Lord, for Anna and Jim and for the varied experience and gifts
you’ve given them. Thank you for bringing them here and for the
preparation they have been going through to bring them to
this new season in their life.
We pray that they settle into their new home.
We thank you for them and pray that your Spirit would rest upon them,
giving them wisdom, grace and strength and they will feel your arms
beneath them and know you as their refuge.
May you bless them in their Ministry and watch over them
that they would bear fruit for your glory. Amen”

Robert Raikes, ragamuffin uncle
1735-1811
Oct - Nov 2024
This short passage is to share with you about the life of Robert Raikes who in the18th Century
was inspired to become the founder of the Sunday School movement. The term Sunday
school has come to mean a class to instruct children in the Faith which we at St Mildred's
call Kool Kids. In those days the children of the poor had very little chance to learn to read
and write, their parents would most like have been illiterate. There were no schools and
they spent all their weekdays toiling in cottages and small factories to earn a pittance to
help their families make ends meet.
On Sundays there was no work done and the children would run wild, getting into all kinds
of mischief. As they grew older this mischief, accompanied by horrible poverty and destitution
would often lead them to crime and the prisons were overflowing. Robert, a well to
do magazine owner in Gloucestershire, was a devout Christian who loved children and the
plight of these little ragamuffins tore at his heart. He prayed, “Can't anything be done?”
and felt in his spirit the answer, “Try”. There and then he determined to start schools on
Sunday and almost immediately he met clergymen, teachers and educated folk who all
wanted to help. The Sunday School movement was born and soon began to catch on and
grow and spread all over England. The children were taught to read and write, learn Bible
stories and of God's love for them.
As children began to love attending and their energies were directed into wonderful
Godly ways the mischief that led them to crime stopped and prisons were virtually
emptied.
Many social reforms followed. We can take free education for granted as well as other
blessings that are the bedrock of our society, but if we dig deeply we will find that most
have their roots in the dedicated work of heroic Christians of the past

Mission to India
by Lee-Ann de Villiers
Oct - Nov 2024
I have had the absolute joy and pleasure of being involved with an organisation
called ‘Heart to Help’ both as a fundraiser and Trustee over many years.
We are the fundraising arm in the UK for the New India Church of Godwww.nicguk.org.
Many from our church family have joined me in fundraising
events and presentations over the years. Thank you!
This year marks a very special occasion, with
NICOG reaching their 50-year milestone, and I
am travelling to India to join in the celebrations!
Can you imagine a presentation ceremony attended
by over 4550 pastors and their families? -
I can’t wait to feel the Holy Spirit at such a celebration!
Kay and David with Pastor Abraham at the
Jubilee Celebration in London
THE STORY OF NEW INDIA CHURCH OF
GOD
NICOG was started in 1976 by two unknown
young men called by God, to transform a nation.
Today it spans the length and breadth of the entire
nation of India. It is the prayer of Pastor Abraham and Pastor Thampy to see their
vision of the nation of India changed by accepting God`s unconditional love, becoming a
living reality.
Pastor Abraham's Story
The story and journey of Pastor R Abraham`s Faith in Christ began in August of 1968 at the
age of 15 years, in a Gospel Crusade in Kerala. This is where he accepted Christ as his
Lord and Saviour and decided to dedicate his entire life to serving God, fulfilling his God
given assignment. The expectation of his Father and family members for him was, after
graduating with a degree in chemistry, he would look for a well-paid job. Instead, he
heard the call of God upon his life to serve the Lord and decided to give up his job and
ambitions of pursuing a secular career in the pharmaceutical industry.
Pastor Abraham followed the call of God into full time ministry and this radical decision resulted
in the birth of a church movement that spans 26 states of India and Nepal. His life’s
dedication and commitment to go into the ministry has born fruit as he has faithfully followed
the Lord Jesus Christ.
The first step in fulfilling the vision and mission was the establishment of New India Church
of God (NICOG) which was co-founded under the leadership of Pastor R. Abraham and
Pastor V.A. Thampy in 1976 in Kerala, Southern India. Then in 1980, God called Pastor R
Abraham to extend His work into the north of India, so he together with his newly wedded
wife Joyce moved to the capital city of New Delhi. As Pastor R Abraham and Joyce settled
in New Delhi, North India it was like a foreign land to them, as they neither understood the
language nor the culture. The climate was different along with the food and dress. To make
www.stmildreds.org 14
Oct - Nov 2024
things worse there was also severe persecution of Christians in North India. Despite the
opposition God enabled Pastor R Abraham together with Joyce and a team of dedicated
Pastors to establish 300 churches within 10 years in Northern India and thus confirming the
call of God on their life and ministry.
Fast forwarding to today, New India Church of God (NICOG) has become the fastest growing
Pentecostal organization in the nation of India. It has 4550 churches across 26 states out
of 28 states of India, Nepal and the Middle East, 15 Bible colleges, 17 orphanages, 8 educational
schools, 85 sewing schools for women and 1 engineering college.
With their journey and life story still continuing on, “there is so much left to be done and
so many more lost souls to reach" says Pastor R. Abraham.
The Church Movement of New India Church of God is bigger than Pastor R Abraham – It is
a Commission and Vision from God to lead and empower the Church in India to reach the
unreached in the nation of India.
This is where our church’s vision and that of NICG converge - “ To make and equip disciples
of Jesus Christ locally and globally in the power of the Holy Spirit."
I will be travelling to India in October, please may I ask for your prayers of protection as
well as your prayers over all the celebration and revival events planned, especially as
government forces are determined to eradicate all other religious groups in India. The
level of persecution is intense, with several pastors already losing their lives so that many
may hear the Good News of Jesus.
"Secondly, I'm planning to provide 10 new bicycles for local pastors, to support them in
their ministry. If you would like to know more about this, please reach out to me (either in
church or by email). Thank you!
Pastor Abraham with bicycles for Pastors.
With thanks - Lee-Ann

Great
news!
Give To Go Green (GTGG) is a match-funding project from the
Church of England, which enables us to double our
locally raised donations for carbon-cutting projects. We
recently applied for £10,000 to improve our carbon footprint
by insulating the south aisle of the church, before we put solar
panels on there next year. We’ll be warmer in church!
We are delighted that for every pound we raise, up to
£10,000, between 3 rd November and 15 th December, it will be
matched by this grant! Read that again! It’s amazing news!
More details to follow, but the Building Development team wanted to let you know about
this so we can all plan this SIX-WEEK fund-raising special, which will finish with a flourish at
the Christmas Carvery on Sunday 15 th December.
Do you remember Tom talking about this Bible verse and how we are experiencing the Lord
going out in front of us for the building project – here’s the verse and we are having to move
quickly to keep up with our Lord!
“As soon as you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the poplar trees,
move quickly, because that will mean the LORD has gone out in front of
you……” 2 Samuel 5:24
Here are a few SIMPLE things you can do by way of preparation for the 3 rd November G2GG
launch:
• De-clutter on Vinted / eBay/ World of Books etc. and give the money to G2GG
• Donate to G2GG in lieu of Christmas presents
• Could you donate £10+ per week for the 6 weeks? It’ll be doubled!
• Collect foreign currency NOTES (not coins) and bring them to church
• Review or start a regular donation to the building project
Please put Sunday 3 rd November in your diary as a six-week campaign finishing on Sunday
15 th December. Hold Sunday 15 th December for our Christmas carvery – bring friends!
Daphne or Anna for more information. Giving links will be issued nearer the time.

For over ten years, the St. Mildred’s church family has
been fundraising for our new Church Hall, for ours and
community use. You may be tired of hearing about it, but let
me tell you, the time to get excited is NOW! That Bible
verse Tom quoted is coming to life before our very eyes.
“As soon as you hear the sound of marching in
the tops of the poplar trees, move quickly,
because that will mean the LORD has gone out in front
of you……” 2 Samuel 5:24
Please take
action NOW!
Oct - Nov 2024
The Building Development Team are starting to
apply for grants and the latest is for £45,000 to
fund the installation of solar panels (PV cells) on
the south aisle roof – the kitchen side of the
church. We plan to install them in the Spring of
2025 and they will generate renewable power.
What we don’t use we will sell back to the Grid, for others’ benefit. We are applying to Valencia
and their Communities Fund, and they have specifically indicated we need as
much support as possible from people OUTSIDE the church membership.
OUR DEADLINE FOR COLLECTING SUPPORT IS SUNDAY 20 th OCTOBER – no
money involved!!
Please don’t assume others will do this – ask your friends, family and neighbours. Ministry
leaders will ask at Parent & Toddler, Blood donors etc. so you can concentrate on your personal
