Increased demand for in-zone schools
LISTINGS FOR properties in
zones for sought-after schools
have seen a surge in
inquiry in the wake of
school acceptance and
rejection letters being sent
out.
Harcourts agent
Zani Polson said as
soon as acceptance
letters were sent out for
Christchurch Boys’ High
Zani
Polson
and Christchurch Girls’ High
schools, she noticed a sudden
spike in interest in a
three-bedroom, twobathroom
townhouse
at 4/18 Elizabeth St,
Riccarton, because it was
in zone for both.
“I had people who were
actually looking whose
kids had missed out,” she
told OneRoof.
Families whose children miss
being chosen from a ballot often
look at other options.
Some sell their existing
home and rent in zone or
buy in zone and rent out
their old home.
Unlike other cities,
where agents are unsure
if in-zone homes attract
a price premium,
Christchurch agents are
Mark
O’Loughlin
convinced they do.
Polson told OneRoof a house in
the zone could in general
terms cost about $50,000
more than one that wasn’t.
Harcourts Mark
O’Loughlin said when
he did appraisals he
always told homeowners
to expect a slight
premium for being in
Christchurch’s key
school zones.
O’Loughlin is about to list a
townhouse and said he would be
making a big deal about the fact
it was in the sought-after school
zones.
“I know that both Boys’ and
Girls’ High are very tight on
their school requirements and if
you are not in the zone it’s very
unlikely that you will get into the
school,” he told OneRoof.
SPARKLING weather drew more
than 5000 fishing fans to the
Groynes fishing lakes on Sunday,
in the hope of catching the big
one.
The free nationwide Take a Kid
Fishing initiative aims to encourage
young people to experience
the joy of fishing. A special
whole-of-site licence allowed participants
to fish without a licence
for the day, with a limit of one fish
per child.
Free fishing rods were provided,
along with bait worms,
and volunteers were on hand to
assist with the set up, and help
untangle lines.
The free annual event was
organised by the Kids Fishing
Charitable Trust, with members
running casting lessons and
tackle demonstrations. An
executive chef was also on hand
to demonstrate how to fillet and
cook the fish, for those lucky
enough to catch one.
About 800 rainbow trout were
released into the lakes in preparation
for the event .
Anglers were able to reel in
about 350 fish on the day, with
many of the larger fish managing
to evade the multitude of hooks.
Organisers said they were
pleased with the number of
young anglers who attended, a
sign the future is looking strong
for the sport.
puts in solar and saves
ABOUT $90,000 in annual
savings will be generated by new
solar panels at Matatiki Hornby
Centre.
There are now 625 panels on
the roof of the city council’s
newest library and pool facility
at Kyle Park, Hornby.
“We’re
officially
connected and
generating
about quarter
of our own
power,” said
city council
head of
Nigel Cox
recreation,
sports and events Nigel Cox.
The panel installation
was paid for through the
Government’s Better Off
funding grant.
“It’s fantastic to be able to put
the funding towards something
that not only moves us closer to
our sustainability goals, but also
offers some long-term cost savings,”
said Cox.
Local firm Sunshine Solar was
engaged to install the panels at
Matatiki, which is the first major
city council facility to receive
the solar treatment.
“The amount of power we
SHINING EXAMPLE: Matatiki Hornby Centre will save about 90k a year from generating
its own solar power.
generate will vary throughout
the year. During winter, we will
generate approximately 10 per
cent of our total power needs,
rising to 36 per cent during the
summer months, for an average
of 24 per cent.
“The pool facilities use a
lot of power, so we will still
be reliant on the local grid,” Cox
said.
The city council estimates an
annual saving of about $90,000
on its power bill for Matatiki
Hornby Centre.
“The performance of the solar
array at Matatiki will give the
council valuable data and may
help inform the future addition
of solar at other council sites,”
Cox said.
Fund to
protect
waterways
now open
PROJECTS TO improve and
protect urban waterways can
apply for funding through the city
council’s community waterways
partnership fund.
The $50,000 fund is open
to community organisations,
schools, social enterprises and
businesses.
Said council head of three
waters Gavin Hutchison: “The
fund helps groups enable
community implementation of
positive stormwater, habitat and
water conservation actions and
solutions, and this is something
we want to deliver to the people
of Christchurch to improve our
urban waterways.”
Previously the fund has
supported initiatives to reduce
litter and clean waterways.
A project to engage
communities and schools to
conduct regular in-river litter
clean ups via a small boat and net
in the Ōtākaro/Avon River and a
campaign to stop litter entering
waterways by regularly picking
up five pieces of litter was also
funded.
Group keeps retirees learning, laughing
• By Rafaella Melo
BETWEEN A SIP of coffee and
a bite of a hot savoury, retirees
over 55 chat and make new
connections before the meeting
starts.
The Christchurch North
West branch of the University
of the Third Age (U3A) is at
full capacity with 300 members
and more than 30 people on
its waiting list. On average, the
group’s monthly meetings are
attended by 200 people.
Retired academic John
Sowman, 67, recently joined the
group. He found himself craving
intellectual stimulation and
engagement after stepping away
from the professional scene.
“I’m interested in staying
connected with what’s important
in the world, and this is just one
way in which we can do that.”
Sowman recalls his first
meeting when the speaker
discussed the Gaza-Israeli
conflict.
Although he disagreed with
some of the speaker’s points, it
made him want to stay.
“We don’t always want to be in
the same echo chamber,” he said.
“We want to be challenged to
think about things differently.
That’s why I’m here.”
U3A is a voluntary
international movement founded
in France in 1973 to keep older
individuals socially and mentally
active through lifelong learning
Each branch
is autonomous
and financially
independent.
The U3A
concept arrived
in New Zealand
in 1989. Seven Judith
years later, the Millar
north west branch started in
Christchurch, becoming the
second group in Canterbury.
U3A Christchurch North West
president Judith Millar joined
the group after retiring in 2011.
“(It) appealed to me because of
its dual purpose of providing the
opportunity for continuing education
through a monthly speaking
programme as well as being
a way of meeting new people and
creating social connections.”
Since 2015, Millar has held
the position of president, and
membership has grown 200 per
cent.
“There is a waiting list for
prospective members (with)
no specific entry requirements.
Approximately 30 new members
are admitted each year,” she said.
For Penny Prestidge, the
group’s IT co-ordinator, Millar’s
leadership is a big reason for the
group’s success.
“She is very entertaining and
enlightened input at each meeting
always generates wide smiles
and chuckles across the room.”
Besides the
lectures across
various topics,
there are also a
few small interest
groups to
strengthen connections
including
cycling, crafts Cherie
and gardening. Wood
Cherie Wood, 76, made new
friends through the group’s
activities and events.
“It’s been good getting to know
lots of people. They have all the
interest groups and excursions
where, every couple of months,
we go to different places, like the
Court Theatre or a sculpture site.
All different things people can
CONNECTIONS: Retired
academic John Sowman
joined U3A seeking the
intellectual stimulation he
missed after retiring.
be interested in, and anyone can
go,” she said.
There are about 90 U3A
groups across the country, with
20 in Canterbury alone.
“Age and experience don’t
mean decline. It means a
different level of contribution.
Groups like this, in a small way,
even around the planet, can
make some difference,” said
Sowman.
• U3A Christchurch
North West meets on the
second Monday of each
month at the Papanui
9.45am. The membership
fee is $25 a year, and
guests are welcome to
Celebrating 30 Years
of the Curtain Bank
This was a celebration that saw a
community come together to
acknowledge all those who had a
vision 30 years ago to establish the
Curtain Bank for families across
Canterbury and the West Coast.
Guests arrived to share memories and
to appreciate all those who have
worked tirelessly to warm the hearts
and homes of families in need.
Speeches were made, Long Service
Certificates were awarded to volunteers
and employees for many years of
loyalty to a wonderful cause. Afternoon
tea was enjoyed with a celebratory cake
shared amongst the guests.
Les Norris, Gayle Katene, Ian
McChesney, Jenny Small, Delle
Small and Lachlan Knighton.
Distinguished guests were Delle
Small and Ian McChesney the
creators of the Curtain Bank, both
were instrumental in the growth,
along with Delle’s daughter, Jenny
Small as CEO. As a Member of
EECA’s Advisory Group, CEA
helped to establish the original
Energy Saver Fund in 1995. Since
then, CEA has successfully received
funding to support a range of
Community Projects. We continue
to be enormously grateful for the
work of these visionaries.
We welcomed representatives from
Community Energy Action - Curtain Bank
our Partners at Orion, Meridian, City
CEA knows that insulation is a priority
and so are curtains which reduce heat
loss from windows and add colour
and cosiness. The Curtain Bank
became a success story and is still
going strong to this day. In the first six
months of 2024 they have provided
curtains to 340 homes across Canterbury
and the West Coast.
The Curtain Bank Coordinator,
Gayle Katene has been there for 20
years and spoke about how it has only
survived all this time by relying on the
generosity of Volunteers who have
turned up every day, bringing with
them their sewing skills, patience and
kindness while they work with families
to create the warmth they deserve.
The Curtain Bank relies on donations
from the public, so if you are spring
Jenny, Delle, Ian and Gayle joined by some of the dedicated CEA Curtain Bank team.
cleaning or renovating, please think
of us before you throw away useable
curtains. Every curtain we receive is
recycled, nothing is wasted, as there
is a home for everything. We are
grateful for all the support we receive.
New cycleway section
forms 10km link
ANOTHER section of Puari
ki Niho-toto South Express
cycleway has been completed,
creating an uninterrupted 10km
route from the city to Hornby.
Construction along the length
of Kyle Park on Waterloo Rd was
expected to take three months
but was completed two weeks
ahead of schedule, finishing up
earlier this month.
“The work means cyclists can
now ride from
South Hagley
Park in the
central city out
to the council’s
newest pools
and library at
Matatiki Hornby
Centre, passing
several schools
and destination
Jacob
Bradbury
spots along the way,” said city
council manager planning and
delivery transport Jacob Bradbury.
“There are now three stages of
work left to complete before the
cycleway will be finished, all of
which we are working on and
progressing.”
The first involves extending
the cycleway further west down
Waterloo Rd from Barters Rd to
Jones Rd, where it will join up
with Selwyn District Council’s
cycleway to Rolleston. This stage
will include line markings and
wayfinding signage within the
Waterloo Business Park.
The next stage is the Gilberthorpes
Rd/Waterloo Rd/
Parker St/Moffett St intersection,
including a stretch of Waterloo
Rd from the western end of Kyle
Park to Finsbury St.
The Parker St level crossing
design required for the cycleway
is still being progressed with
KiwiRail.
The final stage is a section
along Waterloo Rd from Finsbury
St to Wilson St, to be completed
as part of the Halswell
Junction Rd realignment project.
KiwiRail is expected to complete
PHOTO:
NEWSLINE
the level crossing works in early
2025, after which this can be
finished.
“Once complete the cycleway
will be just over 15km long and
run from the central city out to
Templeton, where it joins with
the Selwyn District Council’s
cycleway on Jones Rd that goes
all the way out to Rolleston,”
Bradbury said.
The cycleway passes nine
schools along its route, providing
safe cycle facilities for the
students, as well as connecting
into two existing major
cycleways – Norwest Arc and
Northern Line.
Solve for Tomorrow
is a nationwide event
that challenges year 7-13
students to use STEAM
(science, technology, engineering,
arts, and mathematics)
to help improve
their communities.
Logan developed Enviro-Saver,
a contraption
to clean rubbish, leaves
and other pollutants from
waterways.
For taking first place, he won
$9000, as well as the latest in
Samsung technology for himself
and his school
Solve for Tomorrow is a
partnership between Samsung
and the Museum of Transport
and Technology (MOTAT). It is
a world-wide competition, and
this is the fourth year it has been
Logan
Gardiner
held in New Zealand.
The event has two categories,
years 7-10 and years 11-13, and
awards a first and second place
winner in each.
Entries were judged by Dr
Joel Rindelaub, Dr Siouxsie
Wiles, MOTAT’s head of
education Julie Baker, and Sarah
Washbrooke, deputy chair of
Technology Education
NZ.
Said Rindelaub: “Logan’s
entry stood out to
us because he showed
advanced, out-of-the-box
thinking and used all
the elements of STEAM
theories to help design a
solution.
“Enviro-Saver can sit
in any waterway, and
uses clever engineering to power
itself off the flow of the water,
whilst also catching any rubbish
or pollutants.
“It’s an innovative way
to tackle environmental
management in the community
and preserve our waterways,
and Logan even considered how
the debris is dealt with once
collected.”
Spear a thought for this seasonal favourite
Proper storage and
preparation are key to
making the most of
this celebrated but shortlived
seasonal vege, writes
the team from Love Food
Hate Waste NZ
SPOTTING THE first asparagus
spears in the supermarket is
a sure sign that summer is
just around the corner. Since
asparagus has such a short
season (from late September to
December), it is worth savouring
while you can. But to truly enjoy
this delicate vegetable, proper
storage and preparation are key
Whether you are cooking up
a quick side dish or looking for
ways to use the whole spear, here’s
how to make the most of this
seasonal treat.
Use it quickly
Fresh asparagus is best enjoyed
within a couple of days of
purchase. A good test for
freshness is to gently rub the
spears together – fresh asparagus
will squeak, while older spears
tend to be rubbery. To keep it at
its best, store it right.
Treat it like flowers
Asparagus is a delicate vegetable
that needs to be kept moist to
stay crisp. Store it in the fridge,
standing upright in a jar with a
couple of centimetres of water, or
wrap the bottoms in a wet paper
towel. Be careful with the tips, as
they are especially fragile. If your
asparagus has gone limp, don’t
worry – soaking it in cold water
for a few minutes can revive it.
To snap or not to snap?
Asparagus spears have tough,
woody ends that are often
discarded. While snapping the
ends off is a quick method, it can
waste almost a quarter of the
spear. Another option is to trim
the very ends and peel the thicker,
tougher stalks with a vegetable
peeler to retain more of the spear
for cooking.
Get cooking
The beauty of asparagus is its
versatility and quick cooking
time. Whether blanched,
steamed, roasted, or grilled on the
barbecue, it is best when cooked
until just tender, but still crisp.
If your asparagus has lost its
firmness, it is still perfect for
making a creamy soup, quiche, or
even a mousse.
What to do with the stalks
Don’t toss out the tougher ends
of asparagus! There are plenty of
ways to make the most of them.
Slice them thinly or peel thicker
stalks to add to stir-fries or salads.
You can also turn them into a
tasty asparagus stalk pesto or use
the woody ends to add depth to
soups or stocks.
For something different, try
adding them to your next batch
of pickled vegetables for extra
crunch. And if you don’t plan to
eat them, composting the stalks is
PHOTO: GETTY
a great way to return nutrients to
the earth.
Stash some for later
Want to enjoy asparagus after
the season ends? Freezing is easy!
Blanch the spears, dry them,
and freeze them individually
on a baking tray. Once frozen,
store them in a labelled airtight
container.
With these tips, you can make
the most of every spear and enjoy
the wonderful taste of spring well
into the year!
Asparagus ends pesto
Ingredients
1½ cups (approximately)
asparagus ends
1 cup loosely packed herbs (basil
and mint work well)
⅓ cup walnuts
Zest and juice of one small lemon
¼ cup olive oil
Salt and pepper, to taste
Method
• Cook the asparagus ends until
they are tender — you can do this
in the microwave or by boiling
them. Allow them to cool once
cooked.
• Place the asparagus in a food
processor with the herbs, walnuts,
lemon zest and juice, and olive
oil.
• Blend until smooth.
• Season to taste.
Cooking tips
• You can use any combination
of your favourite herbs to flavour
this pesto
• Any combination of nuts and
seeds, such as almonds, cashews,
pine nuts and sunflower seeds can
be used here as well.
