How
A FAMOUSLY ugly shoe is
trending in the wrong direction
when it comes to safety, data
shows.
So far this year, ACC has paid
out nearly $2 million to people
with ‘fall related’ claims involving
Crocs, jandals and high
heels alone.
The total number of Crocrelated
accidents in the year
to September has already surpassed
2023’s figure, up to 128
from 109.
The number of jandal-related
accidents is decreasing, while
high heel accidents have
remained steady over the past
four years, the data shows.
Losing balance or skidding on
foot was the most common way
for people to sustain injuries in
both Crocs and jandals.
A twisting movement was the
most common way to be injured
wearing heels – 70 people were
injured in this fashion over the
past nine months.
Meanwhile, at least 10 people
were “struck by a person or
animal” while wearing Crocs,
jandals and heels, causing a
significant enough injury to
require ACC.
For the year to date, more
than $1.3 million has been
paid in active costs relating to
the 495 people who needed to
recover from jandal accidents.
FINANCIAL challenges for
households continue as new
data shows more people in
arrears.
The number of consumers falling
behind in credit card, mortgage
and personal loans in August
rose slightly to 461,000, up 5000
from July, according to Centrix’s
credit indicator report.
It equates to 12.3 per cent of
the credit-active population in
arrears.
Financial hardship cases were
up 24 per cent from last year with
45 per cent of hardships related
to mortgage payment difficulties,
29 per cent to credit card debt,
and 17 per cent to personal loan
repayments.
Jacob Wilders, 25, of Shirley, has
a nine-month old baby. He and
his partner are slightly behind on
credit card payments and find it
difficult to pay all their bills.
“It can be really stressful, but
with the new family benefit we
usually can make it work.”
Wilders and his family-of-three
recently had to move flats, and the
only suitable property was about
$120 more expensive a week.
A PROPOSAL for Foodstuffs
to merge its North and South
Island entities into a single
national grocery company has
been declined by the Commerce
Commission.
“The proposed merger would
result in a permanent structural
change to the New Zealand grocery
industry. We are concerned
about the impact this could have
on competition and New Zealand
consumers,” the regulator’s
chairman Dr John Small said.
“The proposed merger would
reduce the number of major
buyers of grocery products in
New Zealand from three to two,
reducing the number of buyers
for many suppliers to supply
their products to, and creating
the largest acquirer of grocery
products in New Zealand.”
Small said the merged entity
would have greater buyer power
than Foodstuffs North Island
MAX LUCAS is ‘knot’ your
average stitcher.
The 79-year-old dad, grandad,
busy volunteer and self-proclaimed
cranky husband started
stitchwork during the Covid-19
lockdowns as something to do to
fill the time.
His colourful works of art are
far from ordinary, with each
creation having its own funky
theme.
‘Things I’m sorry for’ and ‘old
man sayings’ are just two of his
wacky designs, with his latest
work in progress based on ‘tasty
sounding words’.
“I just think of an idea, grab the
yarn and go with it,” Max said.
“It gives me something do to
while I sit in front of the telly, and
it’s something I can pick up when
I feel like it.”
Max is a man of many talents,
with an artistic eye for painting
and a stint spent dabbling in
knitting.
While he may not be recognisable
without a bright red suit and
a red hat, he has also spent years
listening to children’s Christmas
wishes as Eastgate Mall’s Father
Christmas.
When painting became too
messy and knitting lacked
enough creative freedom, Max
settled on stitchwork as his new
artistic hobby.
The craft is quite a timeconsuming
process with each
square taking around one week
to complete, putting an entire
piece at three or four months of
work.
“Eventually, my wife decided
my works were taking up too
and Foodstuffs South Island
each do individually which
would harm the competitive
process.
A substantial lessening of
competition and the associated
increase in buyer power would
mean the merged entity would
likely be able to extract lower
prices from suppliers.
But the commission said it
was concerned the consolidation
with the proposed merger would
much cupboard space in our
home, so I needed to find somewhere
new for them to live,” Max
says.
“Years ago, I had some of my
paintings on display at Linwood
Library, so I bit the bullet and
asked if they wanted to have my
stitchwork up there this time
round.”
lead to reduced investment and
innovation by suppliers.
And that in turn would mean
reduced consumer choice “and/
or quality” of grocery products
in New Zealand for consumers,
the commission added.
Both Foodstuffs entities
voiced disappointment at
the decision. They would be
reviewing the commission’s
decision before deciding on the
next step.
Cranky husband’s work
on display for all to see
His hobby that started purely
out of boredom is now on display
for all to see, with almost all of
Max’s stitchwork and knitting
creations on view at the library.
More than half of student’s
income goes on rent
• From page 1
“Everything these days is more
expensive. I don’t really see it
getting any better, it’s rubbish.”
He earns a “decent” wage in a
call centre and has aspirations
about owning a house one day,
but does not see himself being
able to save in the short-term.
“We don’t really go out and do
nice things as a family that often.
I would like to have enough to go
on a trip somewhere, but I guess
that’s the case for a lot of people
at the moment.”
Grocery bills are another
financial obstacle for Wilders. He
estimates his weekly shop costs
about $350 a week.
Sam Mae, 21, from Ilam does
not have a credit card or any
loans, but she rents and is feeling
the crunch of the increased cost
of living.
“I’m a student so it’s a very limited
income and I can only work
twice a week,” she said.
“You have to get pretty good
at organising what you spend.
It’s about $400 I have a week and
more than half of that goes to
rent.”
Samuel and Helen Elliot have
paid off their home in St Albans,
but the retired couple say they
have family and friends who
struggle with their mortgages.
“For some old ladies on their
pension or our sons, it can be
really difficult with the interest
rates going up. I hope they’ll
keep coming down, but who
knows how it will really look in a
year,” said Samuel.
Ahmed Abubakar, 36, moved
to Christchurch from Nigeria
eight years ago.
He bought a home in Woolston
in 2022 and said mortgage payments
have been “just as difficult
as paying rent”.
Abubakar and his wife have
found it difficult to save since
buying their home, but he is
hopeful decreasing interest rates
will make a difference.
“The affordability of everything
is quite bad. Supermarket
prices especially are way too
much.”
According to the Centrix report,
arrears are tracking slightly
above 2018 levels after a historic
low in 2021.
Credit card arrears increased
slightly to 4.4 per cent in August,
up from 4.2 per cent in the same
period last year.
Mortgage arrears improved in
August with 20,700 home loans
with overdue payments, down
300 from July.
However, mortgage arrears are
tracking 12 per cent higher so far
in 2024 compared to last year.
The proportion of home loans
in arrears fell to 1.39 per cent in
August, down from 1.41 per cent
in July, but remains low historically.
Mortgage demand is still low,
with new application inquiries
up just 0.2 per cent compared to
last year.
Blue is the new Green.
While there is a common misconception that we cannot
achieve sustainable development while also caring for
our environment I believe sustainable development is
achievable.
Recently I appeared on Country Calendar for my involvement
in organic food production and earth-friendly businesses.
While these actions may seem small in scale, I believe we
have the capability to establish environmentally conscious
businesses on a national level.
Historically the National Party is synonymous with
infrastructure development including projects such as
the Clyde Dam, which, while initially met with controversy
is now a crucial asset generating 10% of New Zealand’s
electricity. In fact, under past National governments, the
focus on sustainable practices has seen the contribution of
renewable energy sources increase significantly, rising from
around 60% to approximately 80%.
Pivotal in the development of the world’s first Marine
Reserve in 1975 as well as enacting the world’s first
legislation granting legal personhood to a landscape, and
ratifying the Paris Climate Agreement, the Nats have a solid
record in the area of conservation.
Retaining our biodiversity is also critical. It was John
Key’s government that introduced Predator Free 2050 and
the Kiwi Recovery Plan. This led to substantial growth in
Northland kiwi and doubled kiwi numbers in Coromandel.
Importantly, more measurable environmental improvements
have been achieved at a time when New Zealand was
experiencing economic growth, hence my view that blue is
the new green.
More needs to be done to protect and enhance our
environment and pragmatic, well thought out policies are
the only way forward. We have seen a number of wellintentioned
policies over the last couple of years which
have not shifted the dial.
This Government’s policies to electrify New Zealand and
Hamish Campbell MP for Ilam
How I can help
• Advocate
Contact
• Represent
• Facilitate
double renewable energy generation includes accelerating
new renewable power projects (solar, wind, and
geothermal). Our RMA reforms will ensure most renewable
energy consents are processed within one year and the
default consent duration is increased to 35 years. Our aim
is to make it easier to create abundant and affordable clean
energy.
We also require a credible Emissions Trading Scheme to
establish reliable markets that support the transition to a
greener economy by fairly and effectively pricing emissions.
Some people may doubt the feasibility of relying on future
technologies to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 within
a 25-year timeframe. 25 years ago, an electric battery
cost around $1 million, but today it costs approximately
$12,000. Similarly, 25 years ago, the concept of an iPhone
was unheard of. The next 25 years will unlock a whole range
of advancements because what sets us apart from our
ancestors is the speed we are developing technological
changes, providing us with viable alternatives.
Unlike our ancestors who were limited to using whale oil,
coal, or deforestation, we now have a range of developing
options that enable us to accomplish our environmental
goals more efficiently. I’m proud of our party’s achievements
over many years in sustainability, conservation and
environmentalism while also attaining economic growth and
prosperity.
Kind regards
AI deployed to identify
roads in need of repair
ARTIFICIAL intelligence is
being used to help detect and plan
repairs to roads and footpaths.
AI cameras have been connected
to contractor vehicles to
record the condition of streets as
they move around the city.
“An algorithm scans the camera
recording to identify all faults,
categorises them and presents
repair options for our contracting
teams to review. If the repairs are
updated by the team, the algorithm
learns what it needs to do
in future,” said city council streets
maintenance manager Steve Guy.
“The cameras have been detecting
everything from damage on
both roads and footpaths to damaged
or missing street signs.”
He said the technology has been
equipped to a multitude of different
types of transport for the last
few years – trucks, utes, mobility
scooters and bicycles.
“However, we’re now at the
stage where we have collected
enough data to provide a huge
benefit to the council and residents.
“The AI technology is at a place
where it is far more efficient,”
Guy said.
“We have been able to reduce
WATCHING: AI cameras have been fitted to contractor
vehicles to scan for damaged roads and footpaths.
the number of manual inspections
we need to do, reducing
the risk to staff on the ground
from traffic, as well as reducing
traffic management on the
roads.
“It also has the added benefit
of freeing up inspectors’ time so
they can add value elsewhere.”
Guy said the AI repair data
allowed the city council to
streamline the greater delivery
of projects and get the best value
for money.
“The process we use to make
the most of the AI data ensures
the right piece of work is done,
for the right reason, at the right
time and at the best price.
“One of the key additional
checks we are going through
is to cross reference results
through community feedback
from residents, community
boards and the Life in
Christchurch Survey data to
target locations for repairs that
have the greatest resident need.”
Jandals and high heels
tripping up more of us
• From page 1
While some people might need
more assistance than others, that
cost about $2700 on average per
jandal accident.
For high heel injuries, about
$472,720 was paid out, and for
Croc-related accidents, $63,797
was paid out.
The number of people hurt
while wearing Crocs tripled
between 2022 and 2023, while
the cost to ACC of treating those
injuries doubled.
On the numbers and costs
alone, the humble jandal appears
to sustain the most damage to
the wearer. High heels come in
second, with Crocs climbing the
ranks to third.
ACC said the data for this year
was not definitive.
When people hurt themselves,
they had options to describe on
the form how it happened.
“This field is not mandatory
to complete and not every client
does so. Also, when the field is
completed, there is considerable
variation in the way accidents
are described.”
That meant there could be a
much larger number of people
who had footwear-related
injuries who had not noted the
type of footwear on the form.
Bridging the green gap between suburbs
• By Dylan Smits
THE PRESENCE of trees brings
health and wellbeing benefits to
Christchurch, but does your post
code affect the amount of leafy
giants in your neighbourhood?
More affluent city council wards
such as Cashmere, Fendalton,
Innes and Waimairi have higher
tree canopy coverage compared to
lower-income wards like Linwood
and Hornby.
Coastal, a generally lowerincome
ward, has the highest tree
canopy coverage at 872 out of
3182ha, but a significant amount
of these trees are within Bottle
Lake Forest Park.
Little local research has been
done to explain the disparity
between higher and lower income
suburbs, but overseas studies
suggest wealthier people are
more likely to plant trees on their
property due to having more
space and resources.
The city council is moving forward
with its Urban Forest Plan,
approved in June 2023, to remedy
the disparities between suburbs.
The plan aims to plant the city’s
TREE PLAN: Shortland Park in Avondale (left) has limited tree
canopy coverage and is among the first public parks being
planted with trees under the Urban Forest Plan. Carisbrooke
Playground in Aranui has limited canopy coverage but there
are no plans to plant trees there at this stage.
CONTRAST: Areas like Straven Rd in Fendalton are examples of high tree canopy coverage
in more affluent suburbs while areas like Dyers Rd in Bromley have low tree canopy
coverage. This is being addressed on the roadside with the tree saplings pictured.
public land with enough trees to
increase canopy coverage from
the current 13.5 per cent to more
than 20 per cent by 2070.
Planting efforts have so far
been evenly spread across the city
to help address the disparities
between suburbs.
Canterbury University associate
professor of forestry Justin Morgenroth
said the city council has
made a “great start” at planting
and increasing the production of
tree seeds.
“I think one of the things
they’ve done really well is getting
a handle on what and where the
problem is. Prior to 2015 they
didn’t know where tree cover was
in the city.”
There are factors other than
Tree canopy coverage
by ward
• Coastal Ward: 872 out of
3182ha
• Cashmere Ward: 506 out
of 2389ha
• Fendalton Ward: 174 out
of 908ha
• Innes Ward: 796 out of
4198ha
• Waimairi Ward: 159 out of
1047ha
• Riccarton Ward: 143 out
of 962ha
• Central Ward: 187 out of
1322ha
• Spreydon Ward: 128 out of
1008ha
• Harewood Ward: 1410 out
of 11,352ha
• Papanui Ward: 125 out of
1050ha
• Burwood Ward: 211 out of
2049ha
• Heathcote Ward: 377 out
of 3823ha
• Halswell Ward: 454 out of
4624ha
• Linwood Ward: 147 out of
1646ha
• Hornby Ward: 304 out of
4672ha
wealth which led to disparities in
tree coverage across the city.
Suburbs like Fendalton and
Merivale, in addition to being
higher-income, are some of the
oldest residential areas in the city.
This means trees have had
longer to grow in size and number.
Christchurch’s canopy coverage
of 13.5 per cent is lower than
Auckland at 18.4 per cent and
Wellington at 30.6 per cent.
Morgenroth said Christchurch’s
mostly flat geography has led to
increased deforestation and less
natural regeneration of trees compared
to the more hilly areas of
Auckland and Wellington where
native forests remain.
“For example, if you leave a
plot of unmanaged land in Wellington,
soon it will revert to
forest,” he said.
“Whereas in Christchurch if
you do that, regeneration is likely
to happen at a much slower rate,
just because there’s no sort of
surrounding forest that provides a
seed source.”
The home-grown
• By Kees Chalmers
IT WASN’T long ago physical media was
thought to be dwindling into obscurity in
the face of the digital era.
But the tangible is making a surprising
comeback, in part due to its preservation
by passionate fans.
One of those fans is Steven Ayers, who
owns Appleby Games, a retro video game
Ayers admits he is not a gamer and the
inspiration behind Appleby runs deeper
than personal interest.
Ayers previously owned a whiteware
store just around the corner from his
home. When he was forced to close it
during Covid, his mental health
declined.
“I had a mental breakdown, personal
circumstances, went through a divorce,
things like that. I had to start something
new,” he said.
While running the whiteware store, he
had noticed there was a high demand for
video games.
“I started working from home, buying
and selling games, and it just grew from
there,” he said.
gaming store keeping retro alive
Despite the dominance of
digital media, its physical
counterpart has persevered –
even begun to thrive recently.
Take music. Even with the
prevalence of music streaming
services such as Spotify, more
vinyl records were sold last year
than in 1988, Recording Industry
Association of America statistics
show. Last year, 43.2 million LPs
were sold in the US, up from less
than a million in 2006 when the
resurgence of vinyl began.
Ayers has seen the comeback
in older media first hand.
“I sell more PS2 and Xbox 360
games now than when I started
three-and-a-half-years ago.”
The Appleby owner correlates
the resurgence to the removal of
digital versions.
“Microsoft took off the old 360
games online so you couldn’t buy
them anymore (and) suddenly
the demand goes up because you
have to have the physical form
(in order to play them).”
Canterbury University media
and communications lecturer
Zita Joyce said the demand for the
physical could be motivated by a
desire to “treasure the object”.
“When everything turned
into streaming, it all became so
intangible,” she said.
Ayers also mentioned the
power of nostalgia and how
the physical versions activate
memories that mean something
to people.
For example, the Jonah Lomu
Rugby game which he played as a
teenager, and still owns.
The copy was used on What
Now? a few months ago in a segment
where the Black Ferns took
on kids in a game.
The world champions aren’t
the only celebrities to stop by
Appleby, with Ayers outing Black
Caps pacers Blair Tickner and
Lockie Ferguson, and former
Crusaders prop Oli Jager, as huge
Pokémon fans.
The wide range of people
Ayers interacts with daily is one
of the main reasons why he loves
what he does.
“It ticks all the boxes for me.
The social interaction with customers
has been brilliant.”
The business has been “hugely
beneficial” for his mental state.
“Having been aimless and
. . . (feeling) there was no
direction in my life, and being
in a really dark place, now I feel
there’s a lot of purpose and a lot
TANGIBLE: Appleby owner
Steven Ayers with the Jonah
Lomu Rugby game. Ayers
has witnessed the growth
in old-school media since
opening his shop threeand-a-half
years ago.
of direction.”
The progression of the business
has been completely natural, and
Ayers aims to maintain that “go
with the flow” attitude.
“It’s exciting to just consider
where this might go, and I
don’t know what that looks like
yet, but it feels like it’s going
somewhere.”
The Way
We Were
UNEARTHING MOA BONES
Today, finding moa bones
on your property is rare, but
they used to be frequently
discovered.
In Christchurch they were
often found in the Port Hills. In
September 1973, Bill Taylor and
David Rankin dug up bones
while preparing an extension to
Taylor’s Clifton Tce house. The
bones were about 1000-yearsold
and belonged to a 6-7ft
moa.
The large plant-eating birds
once roamed the country. Nine
species are known to have
existed, the largest about 3.6m
and 230kg. Female moa were
usually larger than male.
They were hunted to extinction
by Māori, their flesh eaten
and their feathers and skins
made into clothing.
Moa bones were discovered
by Europeans in the 1830s.
Canterbury Museum founder
Sir Julius von Haast was known
for exchanging moa bones for
other desirable objects to grow
the museum’s collection.
Moa are thought to have
become extinct about 500 years
ago. However, in 1993, “moa
mania” swept the nation after
the Bealey publican Paddy
Freaney claimed to have captured
photographic evidence of
a moa. Where Freaney’s moa
came from was the subject of
much speculation, including
the notion he had dressed up
as a tradie, gained access to the
Canterbury Museum’s storage
area, and borrowed a replica.
Freaney’s sighting was matched
by a Lake Brunner zoo owner,
who insisted she had captured
a pair but they escaped. The
publicity did not hurt either
business. Today, a monument
at the Bealey commemorates
Freaney’s “sighting” (below).
Fish hangs up his badge after
The name Fish has
invoked a mixture of
fear and respect in
Christchurch’s criminal
underworld for half a
century. If Detective
Sergeant Don Fisher
was looking for you,
there was nowhere to
hide
WHEN DON Fisher graduated
from his initial police training,
the then commandant Bill
Overton wrote on his final
appraisal: “This young man
won’t last long”.
Fifty years on, Fisher has
finally called it a day, retiring
from the police with a reputation
second to none.
“I must admit, there have been
times I thought he was probably
correct, but I think I’ve just
about proved him wrong,” he
said.
Fish, as he is most commonly
known, spent most of his time
in the CIB, where he gained
an unparalleled reputation for
catching burglars.
He says his crime-solving,
crook-catching ways are a result
of the relationships he has built
over many years.
Respect was what Fish gave
people no matter who you were.
“I was told when I joined the
CIB to go out and buy myself a
good pair of shoes because ‘you’ll
be doing a lot of walking, knocking
on doors, going around pubs,
speaking to people, getting your
face out there so people know
who you are’,” said Fish.
Offenders, too, were well
acquainted with Fish, as now
are many of their children and
This was helped by Fish’s remarkable
memory for names and
faces, leading some to say: “If
you can’t find it on the computer,
go and see Fish”.
“I’ve always tried to build a
rapport with the people I deal
with, including offenders,” said
FRESH FACE: Don Fisher in 1978 after four years on the job.
Fish, who is also known as ‘Little
Wanganui’.
“I used to check to see who’d
been arrested overnight and I’d
ask the watchhouse keeper to
take ‘Johnny’ out to the loading
bay. I’d meet Johnny there, give
him a cup of coffee and a cigarette
and chew the fat.
“It wasn’t an interview – I
would just check in to see how
things were going: ‘How’s the
family? What’s happening in
your life that’s driving you to
commit burglaries?’”
It wasn’t just about gathering
intel, it was about building relationships.
His empathetic approach
was extended towards victims
of crime. A victim himself of
multiple burglaries, he knew how
they felt.
It was that strong sense of empathy
that inspired Fish to join
the police in the first place.
“Every time you went to
the pub, people would
say: ‘Here come the pigs’.
But this night, some
quick-witted guy said:
‘No it’s not, it’s the pig
and the piglet!’”
– Don Fisher
“Like most others, I really just
wanted to help people,” he said.
Fish grew up on a dairy farm in
Clandeboye, north of Timaru.
One of nine siblings, he knew
how to look after himself.
“I’d always wanted to join the
police but the height factor was
against me until the height was
lowered to 5’8 (1.76m).
“Nowadays, I might be considered
a giant.”
Fish spent all of his career in
Christchurch, apart from five
years in Ashburton.
He says there are too many
stories to tell.
There was the time he scared
the life out of a bike thief by
jumping out from behind a bush,
grabbing his handlebars and
introducing himself as Detective
Sergeant Fisher.
Then there was the pillowcase
thief who would break into people’s
homes and stuff their pillowcases
full of stolen items.
Fish led the investigation team
and managed to return a lot of
the stolen property by getting the
victims to identify their linen.
Once, Fish became aware of
a planned ram-raid at Harvey
Norman.
He and his crew observed the
location and, sure enough, a car
drove straight through the plate
glass entrance and into the foyer.
“The driver put the car in
reverse to smash the window into
Harvey Norman’s proper, but
the tyres just kept spinning. He
kept revving and revving until
he realised the tile floor was so
shiny he couldn’t get any grip. So
he got out of the car and started
running.
“We had people waiting for
him down the road, so we let him
go for a bit. In the end, I think
he was happy to get picked up
because he was so exhausted.”
Fish also remembers the first
time he went into a pub on duty.
“I was young – young looking
– and small in stature. I went in
with a sergeant who was probably
6’6” (1.82m) and 18 stone (114kg).
“In those days, every time you
went to the pub, people would
say: ‘Here come the pigs’.
“But this night, some quickwitted
guy said: ‘No it’s not, it’s
the pig and the piglet!’
“I’ll never forget that, I had to
smile.”
NEWS 13
50 years of reeling in criminals
One of Fish’s most memorable
arrests happened during his time
in Ashburton.
It was Christchurch Show Day, a
public holiday in Ashburton, and
he’d just finished the night shift.
“I was walking home along the
main street at about five in the
morning, and there were lots of big
trucks and trailer units rumbling
through town. Whenever there
was a lull, I heard a strange noise.
“After a while, I recognised
it as nails being pulled out of
roofing iron and it was coming
from Woolworths. There were no
cellphones in those days, so I ran
to the public phone box, called
111 and asked for the early shift to
come and meet me,” Fish said.
“We put staff at each end of the
alleyway, and I went up onto the
roof. As I got there, I saw a male
running across the roof, down the
fire escape and out of sight. He ran
straight to the arms of the police
officer at the end of the alleyway.
“I went back and sure enough,
sheets of roofing iron had been
removed and a large rope had been
tied round the rafter. We found
explosives in his bag, which he was
planning to use to blow the safe.
“He’d done this homework.
He’d cased the place, he knew it
was a public holiday, he probably
knew it was our change of shift.
But what he didn’t take into account
was the suspicious alert of
Constable Fisher walking home at
that precise time!
“To catch a burglar on the job
is a buzz; but to catch a guy who’s
going through the roof to blow the
safe, that was an extra buzz!”
Fish also worked during the
1981 Springbok tour protests.
He recalls how hard it was to
focus on the crowd as instructed
during the final test at Eden Park
when “this mad bomber was flying
over and the game was so tense”.
“It wasn’t really until I got back
home that I realised just how serious
it was and how lucky it was
that no one was killed.”
Throughout his career with the
CIB, Fish worked on a number of
homicide cases and other serious
crimes.
“Working on a major investigation
is what young detectives join
the CIB for. It’s like a team sport.
Each individual brings different
skills and flair and it’s how you
mould them and get the best out
of them that gets results.
“Whether it’s closure for the
family of a homicide victim or
returning stolen property, I’ve
always found that part of the job
hugely satisfying.”
Fish has a strong affiliation
with rugby. He coached for many
years and is currently president of
Belfast Rugby Football Club.
“Rugby has been a great release
valve for me. It keeps you involved
with the community and it’s a
great break from police work.”
He has also used rugby as a recruiting
tool, with several serving
officers who had been coached by
Fish crediting him for their police
careers.
Fish likes to think his coaching
and mentoring helped a few people
along.
“When I talk to people about
promotion, the one piece of advice
I give them all is to be a leader in
the field first and foremost, as opposed
to a manager at your desk.
“Junior staff don’t need you
micromanaging them. On the
streets is where they need you, not
three days later when you’re sitting
at your desk in hindsight and saying:
‘Why didn’t you do this? Why
didn’t you do that?’
“Sometimes I hear the old catch
cry: ‘We haven’t got enough staff’.
But I always say: ‘If you are the
only staff member, you can still do
something’.
INVESTIGATOR: During his career with the CIB, Don Fisher
worked on a number of homicides and other serious crimes.
“Rather than sitting there complaining
about what we haven’t
got, get out there to do the best
with what we have got,” Fish said.
“It’s like sport – it’s all very well
to say: ‘Let’s go out and win this
game’. But realistically, it’s about
putting in a performance you can
be proud of.
“I’ve loved policing with a
passion. I bound out of bed in the
morning, get to work and, as some
staff would say: ‘I’d forget to go
home’.” – Ten One
Heartfelt thank you
I WOULD like to thank our community
for all the support given to Southern Cancer
Society, (the former Canterbury West Coast
and Otago Southland Divisions), on Daffodil
Day and the role you played in making it so
successful.
We have been overwhelmed by that
support. The vibe on the day presented
quite a party atmosphere as individuals,
schools, communities and corporates all
came together with their own events to raise
money for the society. This allowed us to
have some fun while we focused on a very
serious issue facing us all.
Your generosity couldn’t have come at a
more important time.
One-in-three of us will likely receive a
cancer diagnosis in our lifetime and world
cancer statistics are now suggesting it will
soon be one-in-two.
The Cancer Society supports all cancers,
all cancer research and all people, no matter
what.
Because of your kindness and enthusiasm
for the day, we can continue to provide
All money raised by your community
stays within your community, except for a
portion that goes towards cancer research
We are serious in our fight to prevent
this.
We’ve yet to finalise the total money
collected and look forward to sharing that
with you soon. Once again, I want to thank
you all. I can’t find the words to express the
heart-felt gratitude the Southern Cancer
Hospital te reo
Following several visits to Christchurch
Hospital, I noticed that on every reception
Parking charges
I think it stinks to charge for the
Botanic Gardens car parks. There are
so few things people, especially families
with kids, can do for free, and though
the parking fees might not be huge, it
changes the concept of a free day out. Is
the council really that desperate? Can’t
we have something that’s not about
money? Bad idea, council.
– Nicky Taylor
Cyclists
I was reading the article about the cyclist
videoing bad driving.
What about all the cyclists running
red lights, not using cycle lanes we paid
hundreds of thousands of dollars to put
in, no lights and riding in the dark, and
riding on the wrong side of the road?
I saw one round a roundabout the
wrong way. No helmet. I see this and
more everyday when I am driving as an
Three great reasons to own a
mobility scooter in Christchurch
As the vibrant city of Christchurch
continues to flourish, so too do the
options for seniors looking to maintain
their independence and stay connected
to the community. One such option
gaining popularity is the mobility
scooter.
Whether you’re looking to explore the
scenic parks, visit family, or run errands,
a mobility scooter can offer numerous
benefits. Here are three great reasons
why owning one in Christchurch might
be the perfect choice for you:
1) Cost Benefits: Affordable and
Hassle-Free
Owning a mobility scooter offers
financial advantages that may surprise
you. Unlike cars, mobility scooters
don’t require registration or a warrant
of fitness, which means less hassle and
fewer ongoing expenses. Your home
contents insurance could cover the
scooter, sparing you the need for a
separate policy.
Maintenance is straightforward
too—More Mobility offers a convenient
service where a professional comes to
your home for an annual check-up, all
for just $120. And when it comes to
running costs, they’re incredibly low. In
fact, charging a mobility scooter is about
as cheap as running a heated towel rail,
meaning you can use it freely without
worrying about expensive fuel or high
electricity bills.
2) Independence: Go Where You
Want, When You Want
One of the greatest benefits of owning a
mobility scooter is the sense of freedom
it provides. Modern scooters offer an
impressive range, averaging between 30
to 50 kilometers on a single charge. This
means you can comfortably travel from
the outskirts of Christchurch into the
city, visit the beautiful Botanic Gardens
or Hagley Park, and head back home
with ease.
Many scooter owners use them to stay
active in their communities—whether
it’s attending grandkids’ sports games,
popping into a doctor’s appointment,
or making a trip to the local shopping
mall. A mobility scooter helps keep you
on the move, letting you maintain an
independent lifestyle without relying on
others for transport.
3) Social Connectedness and
Wellbeing
Owning a mobility scooter isn’t just
about getting from point A to point
B—it’s also a fantastic way to stay
socially connected and improve your
overall wellbeing. As you cruise through
Christchurch’s leafy suburbs, you’ll find
yourself meeting other scooter owners,
striking up conversations, and forming
lasting friendships. For one More
Mobility customer, the highlight of his
week is taking the bus from Sumner into
the city with his scooter, enjoying the
sights, sounds, and social
interactions along the way.
With a broad range of scooters
available—from compact travel scooters
that can be taken on airplanes to larger,
more robust models—More Mobility has
something to suit every need.
Visit their showroom at 113 Blenheim
Road to explore the options and take a
test ride with one of their friendly staff
no worries—More Mobility also offers a
no-charge home demonstration, ensuring
everyone has the opportunity to find their
perfect scooter.
Owning a mobility scooter in
BEE POLLEN
A natural superfood to
enhance your health!
Pollen, a most nutritious substance
harvested by worker bees from flower
anthers, can provide many health
benefits due to its comprehensive
nutritional profile. It contains more
than 250 biologically active substances,
including protein, free-form amino
acids, enzymes, antioxidants, flavonoids,
fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals. This
variety of nutrients makes bee pollen a
superfood, as it contains nearly all the
nutrients the human body requires to
thrive!
Bee pollen is a mixture of flower
pollen, nectar, enzymes, honey & wax.
One clinical study found rabbits who
received bee pollen in addition to their
regular diet had a much longer lifespan
and more reproductive success. They
gave birth to healthier, stronger babies
than rabbits who did not use it.
Bee pollen, a substance used for
centuries for nutritional and medicinal
purposes, has stood the test of time and
the scrutiny of modern research and
clinical studies. Its historical significance
is validated by its continued use in
countries like Germany and China,
where it is not just a supplement, but a
recognized medicine often prescribed to
support health and healing.
Scientists have shown bee pollen to
be a natural anti-inflammatory, which
blocks the activity of enzymes that cause
acute and chronic inflammation. Animal
studies show it to eliminate swelling by
up to 75%.
Human research has shown that
bee pollen is a powerful ally in the
fight against allergies and infections.
It effectively blocks the release of
histamine, the main compound
responsible for allergic reactions like hay
fever. Moreover, it significantly enhances
the immune system’s response to
infection, has antibiotic activity against
pathogens that may cause disease,
improves wound healing, and even slows
the growth of some cancers.
With bee pollen, you can feel more
secure about your body’s ability to defend
itself.
Research shows pollen boosts blood
circulation to the brain, strengthens the
nervous system, and relieves stress and
depression, helping you feel calm and at
ease.
Heart disease is a significant concern
for many, but bee pollen offers hope.
It has been shown to lower known
risk factors like blood lipids and bad
cholesterol while increasing good HDL
cholesterol. With bee pollen, you can take
proactive steps to protect your heart and
reduce your risk of the leading cause of
death worldwide.
In animal studies, pollen improves liver
function and significantly promotes liver
healing.
Studies have shown that pollen eases
menopause symptoms such as hot
flushes, night sweats, mood changes, and
irregular sleep for many women.
Evidence suggests pollen enhances the
absorption and utilisation of nutrients
from our diet, while more animal studies
suggest pollen improves muscle growth,
speeds up the metabolism, and promotes
longevity.
Add bee pollen to food or smoothies
or eat it straight. Pollen is a powerful
substance and may upset your stomach
or cause allergic reactions for first-time
users, so always start with just a few
granules till your body adjusts to its use,
and then slowly increase the dosage.
The body quickly adapts to pollen
use for most, but for an exceedingly
small number of people, it may cause
symptoms such as itching, swelling,
shortness of breath, or anaphylaxis.
New Zealand Maori have long used
it to maintain health and vigor. Soviets
use it with their astronauts and athletes,
while in Germany and China, it is often
prescribed to support healing. Many
beekeepers believe it maintains health
and increases longevity.
Feature
Making the Choice:
how to divide my loved one’s
property when they pass?
We know that the death of a loved
one is a difficult time for you and your
whānau / family. You are faced with
tough decisions, such as – what happens
to their property?
If your de facto partner or spouse
passes away, you have the option under
the Property (Relationships) Act 1976
(“PRA”) to choose:
• Option A: to make an application
under the PRA for division of
relationship property; or
• Option B: to take under their will (or
under intestate law if they do not have a
will).
If you do not make a choice, or your
choice is made outside of the timeframe
or in the manner required by the PRA –
then you will be treated as having chosen
Option B.
So which option is best?
This can be a tricky question and
should be assessed on a case-by-case
basis. It is important to have your loved
one’s details – including information
about their assets, will, or other relevant
legal documents before making your
decision.
Further considerations, such as the
interaction between your choice and
any Contracting Out Agreement can
also add another layer of complexity to
matters.
When making your choice, there is
very little room to change your mind
down the track, so it is important to
understand your entitlements before you
make your decision.
property entitlements, and navigating
Christchurch looks to the future
– signing Hammett and Sisson
• By Sam Coughlan
FORMER ALL Blacks and
Crusaders hooker Mark
Hammett will spearhead a
bid to rejuvenate a struggling
Christchurch.
Hammett, who has coached St
Thomas of Canterbury College’s
first XV for the past four years,
was this week appointed head of
rugby at the club, whose division
1 team has won just one game in
each of the past two seasons.
He has also coached Super
Rugby sides the Hurricanes,
Sunwolves and Highlanders, and
made 30 appearances for the All
Blacks.
Hammett joins former
Canterbury B, Lincoln
University and Burnside coach
Bevan Sisson at Christchurch,
who was appointed head coach
last week.
Sisson won two Metro
premierships with Lincoln
University in 2017 and 2018.
He has also been a columnist
for The Star during the club
rugby season.
Hammett said he was looking
forward to taking on what he
thought would be a similar job to
his role at St Thomas.
“It just really appeals to me
. . . I like places that need a bit
of work done to them, that’s the
thing that really motivates me,
so this is certainly one of those
challenges,” he said.
Christchurch is one of the oldest
rugby clubs in the country. It
has won 17 senior men’s and 13
senior women’s titles – the last
senior men’s in 2010.
Sisson said he wanted to add
value as a coach for the division
1 team and also help the club
in their long-term objective of
developing quality players and
coaches coming up through the
ranks to the top team.
“I was excited more by their
long-term vision for it, really,
than short-term success,” he
said.
“For an old boy like me, it’s
got me excited again to see something
like that.”
Sisson said the work was already
under way.
“We’re already looking at
pre-season recruitment, retention,
coach appointments, and a
vision going forward.”
Christchurch president Craig
Calder said he was delighted to
secure Hammett.
“When you’ve got an exprofessional
rugby coach, an
great work that
he’s done with
St Thomas,
we’re just over
the moon
and delighted
Craig Calder with that
appointment.”
He was also thrilled to have
Sisson on board.
“We need to offer players,
coaches, and other volunteers
a clear pathway and a clear
support system – players who
are developing their talent to go
to higher honours need those
support mechanisms, schoolbased
training and support
around them – and we feel both of
these coaches will satisfy them.”
ON BOARD:
Bevan Sisson was
appointed head
coach last week.
CHRISTCHURCH teenager
Louis Sharp has secured a
key victory on his road to
Formula 1.
The rising motorsport star won
the 2024 GB3 Championship title
at the weekend.
The GB3 rookie secured five
wins across the season with the
final victory coming in race two
of three at the Brands Hatch
Circuit near London.
A 10th place in the reverse grid
race three secured the title for
Sharp.
The 17-year-old said he was “so
grateful to be in this position”.
“I don’t think very many people
go F4 and then the next year
win the GB3 championship, so
I’m very lucky and very happy.
“I’ve got to give a big thank
you to the whole team – my dad,
who’s been over here with me the
whole step of the way. My success
is down to him and my family
and friends, not only in New
Zealand but the UK as well.”
Sharp has won back-to-back
junior formula championships,
having claimed the British F4
series last year.
He joins Brazilian Ayrton
Senna, who achieved the feat in
the 1980s, and went on to win
three F1 world titles.
As a result of winning the GB3
title, Sharp has secured a test
drive in an FIA F3 car, the logical
next step.
Despite the test he is yet to
reveal what his plans will be for
next year.
“I can’t give too many secrets
away just yet, but we’ll be moving
on from GB3 and taking that
next step up, so we’ll just have to
see what it is.”
Last week, Sharp was named
as one of four finalists in the
Autosport BRDC Young Driver
of the Year award. The winner
will earn a test in an Aston
Martin F1 car.
Sharp also won the Jack Cavill
Pole Position Cup, and his team
Rodin Motorsport took out the
teams championship title.

BURNSIDE West University
aren’t feeling the pressure as the
new Metro cricket season gets
under way on Saturday.
Burnside won the one- and twoday
trophies last season – the first
time since 1991 they’d completed
the ‘double’.
But player-coach Carl Huyser
said they didn’t mind having a
target on their back.
“The way we see it is more like
a privilege to be able to go again
and potentially bag some of those
trophies and that’s
what we’re looking
to do,” he said.
He was happy
with the possibility
of opponents lifting
their game to
play Burnside.
“We want people
to be at their best
and we want to beat
teams when they’re at their best.”
At the other end of the scale,
newly-promoted Riccarton have
Head coach Darrin Entwistle
CASHMERE Technical will have
to wait until tomorrow to find out
if midfielder Matt Tod-Smith will
be able to play again this season.
Tod-Smith went down with
a knee injury late in Tech’s 4-0
win over Western Suburbs in the
National League on Sunday and
had to leave the field.
He will be assessed tomorrow
and while coach Dan Schwarz
said while he was fearful of an
ACL tear – which carries with
it a nine-month recovery period
– he was hopeful for a positive
prognosis.
“We need to get the reports in
and see what damage is actually
done there, but we’ll prepare for
the next few weeks to not have
him,” he said.
Schwarz said Tod-Smith had
a lot of swelling and pain but he
was able to put weight on the leg.
What is certain is he won’t be fit
v Canterbury United,
Newtown Park, Wellington,
2pm Sat
Schwarz said he was looking
forward to the potential challenge
of playing against some full-time
footballers – Phoenix first-team
regular David Ball started their
2-0 loss to Eastern Suburbs on
Saturday while contracted players
Luke Supyk, Gabriel Sloane-
Rodrigues and Corban Piper all
featured.
“It’s always good to test yourselves
against the best players, so
it’s really nice to host the Phoenix
and have a professional team
come to Christchurch to play
against us,” he said.
“We just hope we can give a fair
account of ourselves and have a
good game.”
Coastal Spirit fought to a 0-0
draw with reigning champions
Wellington Olympic on Saturday
and now face their first away trip
of the campaign this weekend,
against Auckland’s Western
Springs who lost 4-0 to Napier
City Rovers in their first game.
Head coach Robbie Stanton
said Saturday’s result gave them
confidence for the season.
“Olympic are one of the
strongest groups in the country
and we have more than matched
them,” he said.
In the women’s National
League, Canterbury United Pride
got their season off to the best
possible start with a 4-1 victory
over the Wellington Phoenix
Reserves.
The Pride came from 1-0 down
and stormed to victory in the
second half.
On Saturday they’ll play away
against Wellington United – who
opened their campaign with a 3-2
win over Western Springs.
Residents afraid of being attacked by dogs
LOOSE DOGS wandering the
streets have resulted in people
and other dogs being attacked.
Aranui resident Danni Cain
said she has had an issue with
one particular dog and has called
the city council 15 times.
“It has gone for me, my neighbour,
her dog and another lady
with a dog,” said Cain.
She has heard the dog also bit
Top trout play
hard to get for
young anglers
• By Geoff Sloan
another person and other dogs.
The incidents have taken place in
the Shortland St and Breezes Rd
area.
Cain has grown up with dogs,
but is scared of this one and what
it could do.
“The fact it’s rushing at me
does not bode well for a child in
the street.”
She said each time she contacts
the city council, i takes reports,
contacts the owner and chases
the dog back home. But it keeps
escaping.
Another Aranui resident, Mike
Lilley, had a run in with a loose
dog last week.
“I was just walking my dog
when this other dog came running
out of a house and suddenly
started to jump on my dog and
bite it.”
He said the dog’s owner came
out, bu there was “no real urgency,
and that made me angry”.
PHOTOS:
GEOFF SLOAN
Lilley was scared and worried
about potential vet bills.
He said people did not really
care abou their dog escaping.
“The council will just return
it so there are no real consequences,”
he said.
Said city council animal services
manager Lionel Bridger in a
statement: “Wandering dogs pose
a risk to people, domestic animals
and wildlife and (council)
strongly encourages Christchurch
dog owners to ensure their
dog is properly contained on
their property.”
He advised members of the
public to call the city council
if they see wandering dogs, so
experienced staff can handle the
situation.
In the year to June 30, 2024,
the city council received 2252
complaints about wandering
dogs and lodged 2123 found dog
reports. • Turn to page 4
SPARKLING weather drew more
than 5000 fishing fans to the
Groynes fishing lakes on Sunday,
in the hope of catching the big
one.
The free nationwide Take a Kid
Fishing initiative aims to encourage
young people to experience
the joy of fishing. A special
whole-of-site licence allowed participants
to fish without a licence
for the day, with a limit of one fish
per child.
Free fishing rods were provided,
along with bait worms,
and volunteers were on hand to
assist with the set up, and help
untangle lines.
running casting lessons and
tackle demonstrations. An
executive chef was also on hand
to demonstrate how to fillet and
cook the fish, for those lucky
enough to catch one.
About 800 rainbow trout were
released into the lakes in preparation
for the event .
Anglers were able to reel in
about 350 fish on the day, with
many of the larger fish managing
to evade the multitude of hooks.
Organisers said they were
pleased with the number of
young anglers who attended, a
sign the future is looking strong
for the sport.
