In this issue Cory B. Savage, the founder of Creative Recovery LA,<br />
located in West Hollywood, talks to Mark Ariel about helping others on<br />
the path to wellness map out their journey through creativity (“Where<br />
Art Meets Healing,” pages 16-17).<br />
“We created Creative Recovery because we wanted to provide a safe<br />
space for others to heal and recover,” says Savage. “We know firsthand<br />
how hard it can be to find the right support and resources, and we wanted<br />
to create a program that would offer a holistic approach to recovery.<br />
Creative Recovery is a brand new initiative that combines clinical assessments<br />
with creative teams to help clients map out their journey through<br />
creativity, and address the suffering caused by trauma and addiction.”<br />
“Our program is designed to be highly personalized and adaptive<br />
to each client’s needs,” reveals Savage. When a client comes in, they’ll<br />
share their story with us, almost like a screenplay. We’ll then pair them<br />
with a clinical team and a creative team, who will work together to create<br />
a customized plan for their healing journey.”<br />

Toni Atkins on why we need Proposition 3<br />
Proposition 3, the initiative on the<br />
November ballot to protect marriage<br />
equality in California, is very<br />
personal to me.<br />
In 2008, the California Supreme Court<br />
ruled that <strong>LGBTQ</strong>+ people had the fundamental<br />
right to share a full, protected, and<br />
respected life with the person that they<br />
loved. It was then that I had the opportunity<br />
to marry my spouse, Jennifer. During that<br />
“Summer of Love,” I officiated more than<br />
eighteen marriage ceremonies as many of<br />
our friends rushed to get married — but this<br />
hopeful time came to a devastating end<br />
when Proposition 8 passed that November.<br />
The state of my marriage, and so many others,<br />
was in limbo.<br />
After many years and a handful of court<br />
cases later, marriage equality was legalized<br />
in California and across the country.<br />
However, as the overturning of Roe v Wade<br />
and ongoing attacks on the <strong>LGBTQ</strong>+ community<br />
make clear, there is still work to do<br />

to protect marriage equality. That’s why we<br />
need Proposition 3.<br />
Proposition 3 removes outdated, discriminatory<br />
language from Prop 8 defining<br />
marriage as only between a man and a<br />
woman and replaces it with a provision that<br />
establishes the right to marry as fundamental<br />
in California. The Roe ruling was a<br />
wake-up call—a reminder that the fight for<br />
equality is far from over and that we must<br />
be proactive in safeguarding our freedom<br />
to marry. Proposition 3 is our chance to protect<br />
these Californian ideals. By enshrining<br />
the right to marry in our state constitution,<br />
Prop 3 will protect marriage for same-sex<br />
and interracial couples, should the right be<br />
overturned federally.<br />
Preserving marriage equality helps<br />
California continue to serve as a beacon<br />
of hope. As a young lesbian growing up in<br />
rural southwest Virginia, California represented<br />
a place where I could live authentically<br />
and have the opportunity to love<br />
freely. While today we may feel a sense of<br />
security, we cannot become complacent<br />
in our fight to protect our rights. In recent<br />
years, we’ve seen our hard-won rights<br />
come under threat from an increasingly<br />
conservative Supreme Court that seems<br />
willing to roll back critical civil rights protections.<br />
The decision to overturn Roe v. Wade<br />
in 2022 made it clear that even long-standing<br />
precedents can be undone, putting<br />
many rights—including marriage equality—at<br />
risk. Proposition 3 is our chance to<br />
safeguard our marriage rights in California,<br />
ensuring that our state remains committed<br />
to protecting freedom and equality for all.<br />
While marriage equality is at the heart of<br />
Prop 3, this initiative is about more than just<br />
securing the right to marry. It’s about affirming<br />
our values as a state and as a community.<br />
It’s about ensuring that California<br />
remains a place where everyone is treated<br />
with dignity and respect.<br />
Californians have long been champions<br />
of love, justice, and equality. Prop 3 is our<br />

come together, vote YES on Prop 3, and ensure<br />
that California continues to be a place<br />
where love always wins.<br />

• Increased social service funding to <strong>LGBTQ</strong>+ community service providers<br />

Actor Van Hansis, who came out<br />
as gay in <strong>THE</strong> <strong>FIGHT</strong> in May 2014,<br />
lands role on iconic soap opera<br />
Actor Van Hansis has landed a new role<br />
on the long-running soap opera General<br />
Hospital. Hansis, 43, will play the character<br />
Lucas Jones, reports queerty.com.<br />
Jones first appeared as a child character back in<br />
the late 1990s. He’s been played by a handful of<br />
actors over the last 25 years, most notably Ryan<br />
Carnes between 2004-2005, 2014-2020, and<br />
briefly earlier this year.<br />
Hansis is best known for playing<br />
Luke Snyder on As<br />
the World Turns from<br />
2005-2010. He also<br />
starred in the fabulous,<br />
queer web<br />
series, Eastsiders,<br />
for which he won<br />
a Queerties<br />
award.<br />
He came out<br />
as gay in <strong>THE</strong><br />
<strong>FIGHT</strong> Magazine<br />
in May 2014, in an interview with his<br />
EastSiders costar and creator, Kit Williamson.<br />
“Being on General Hospital, I guess, is literally a dream come<br />
true,” Hansis told TV Insider. “But there was so much I got out of<br />
being on World Turns. It was my first job. There was so much, especially<br />
with the character, and I think I was just so young, I didn’t<br />
understand and I didn’t really appreciate that.”<br />
“Luke was one of the first gay male lead characters. With some<br />
time and some distance, I’m like, ‘Wow, that was a really cool experience,’<br />
but I was in the moment and it didn’t feel like how it feels now.”<br />
Regarding his character Lucas Jones on General Hospital, Hansis<br />
told TV Insider: “There are gay people in life so there should be gay<br />
people on soaps and queer people and trans people and all of that.<br />
So, the fact that it’s so ingrained and it’s not like ‘the gay character’<br />
or ‘the gay storyline’ feels really nice.”<br />
