On duty around
the clock
As we step into the final quarter of this year, I am filled with
excitement about the momentum we’ve maintained in the
world of home textiles. Last month, we had the privilege of
attending the “Hometextile & Design” fair in Moscow, a key
platform for industry professionals to exchange ideas and
showcase innovations. Our participation in this prestigious
event not only reaffirmed our commitment to keeping you
informed but also demonstrated the significant role we
continue to play in connecting with global markets.
16 FOCUS
The Turkish textile sector
is standing out in sustainability
Focusing on sustainability, the Turkish textile sector has made its
presence felt at the Circular Textile Days, held for the fourth time in
collaboration with the Consulate General of the Netherlands in Istanbul
and the Istanbul Textile and Raw Materials Exporters’ Association
(ITHIB). ITHIB board members highlighted the sector’s attention to
circular economy practices, zero waste policies, and sustainability efforts,
alongside field visits that coincided with the event in the Netherlands.
The Circular Textile Days, emphasizing Turkey’s
strong sustainability measures, took place from
September 15-19, 2024. Nearly 40 representatives
from various organizations, including ITHIB board
members Sultan Tepe and Necat Altın, as well
as leaders from other textile export associations,
participated in the event. Attendees shared insights
on Turkey’s transition to a circular and green
economy, discussing sustainability visions, actions,
and projects. The Turkish delegation visited
Erdotex on the first day and attended presentations
from the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO),
Hedgehog, and United Repair Center. On the
second day, they toured Spinning Jenny, Saxcell,
and Schijvens, examining the Netherlands’ circular
economy initiatives firsthand.
Turkey’s leadership in circular economy
Necat Altın, a board member of ITHIB, emphasized
Turkey’s unique position as the only Turkish
institution with a dedicated stand at the event,
where they presented the country’s sustainability
initiatives. He noted the increasing importance
of sustainability and circular economy within
HTE HOME TEXTILE EXPORTS OCTOBER 2024
18 FOCUS
the global textile sector, asserting that Turkish
textiles are making significant strides in this area.
Many companies are investing in zero waste
principles and production methods that align with
circular economy standards, showcasing a strong
commitment to sustainable practices.
Sultan Tepe from ITHIB pointed out that
governmental initiatives like the zero waste policy
from the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and
Climate Change, the sustainable finance framework
from the Ministry of Treasury and Finance, and the
Green Deal Action Plan from the Ministry of Trade
are preparing the sector for a more sustainable future.
He remarked, “The growing use of renewable energy
in Turkey and the support from banks for renewable
projects enable Turkish textile firms to make
significant investments in this area. Our companies
are focused on waste reduction and circular economy
practices, leading to an increase in sustainabilityoriented
projects and investments.”
Collective responsibility for sustainability
Highlighting that the Turkish textile sector is the fifth
largest in the world and the second largest supplier
to the EU, Necat Altın pointed out that it was the
first sector to announce a sustainability action plan.
While the sector’s journey toward a circular economy
is ongoing, he acknowledged challenges that create
unfair competition. He stressed that the responsibility
for sustainability lies not only with producers but also
with suppliers, brands, and all stakeholders, including
government and universities.
He stated, “This journey requires a collective effort.
Each brand undergoes over 40 social compliance
and environmental audits, which can waste time and
increase costs for producers striving to achieve the
same sustainability goals. This situation detracts from
reaching sustainability targets and exhausts resources
that could be better used for production. To ensure
the continuity of sustainable development goals, we
need comprehensive, solution-oriented collaborations
that truly support sustainability.”
Responsible ® Program Introduction
Meeting Hosted by DENİB
The Responsible ® Program Introduction Meeting was held
on September 26, 2024, in the DENİB conference hall.
The meeting, which was organized to introduce the Responsible ®
Program initiated by the Turkish Ministry of Trade to facilitate
companies’ access to consultancy services needed
to comply with the European Green Deal, began with
an opening speech by DENİB Chairman Hüseyin Memişoğlu.
Memişoğlu said, “At the beginning of my speech, I
would like to touch on our province’s export figures.
In 2023, Denizli achieved a total export value of 4.2
billion USD. Our 1,700 active exporters trade in 25
different sectors, exporting nearly 3,000 product
groups to 185 countries. As of the latest data, our
province’s exports have surpassed 3 billion USD,
placing Denizli in 9th place nationwide.
The most important feature of our exports is the
diversity of sectors. Of our total exports, textiles
and apparel account for 33%, electrical-electronics
for 19%, iron and non-ferrous metals for 15%,
agriculture for 7%, natural stone for 6%, and
machinery and components for 2%.
The top five countries we export to are the UK, the
USA, Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands. Six of
the top ten countries we export to are EU nations.
While the EU’s share in our total exports is around
50%, this figure exceeds 65% in our leading sector,
textiles and apparel.
For this reason, all policies shaped by the European
Union around climate change are of great interest to
Denizli’s exporters. The fact that the Responsible ®
Program Introduction Meeting is being held in our
province is therefore particularly important. On this
occasion, I would like to thank the Ministry of Trade,
the Public Oversight Authority, and the Turkish
Exporters Assembly for organizing this event.
We are aware of the importance of preparing for the
potential impacts of the European Green Deal on
our exports to ensure sustainability in the EU market.
Increasing environmental sensitivity in production
has become a key strategy for companies. However,
as we all know, the green transformation is a costly
process. Therefore, the support from our Ministry is
especially crucial for companies at the SME level.
I hope that a high number of companies from
Denizli will apply to the Responsible ® Program, and
that Denizli will be among the leading regions with
businesses entitled to the Responsible ® label.”
UTİB boosts
export initiative
to the USA
Uludağ Textile Exporters’
Association (UTİB) has ramped
up its efforts in exports. Aimed
at increasing its share in the US
market, UTİB showed strong
participation in two simultaneous
fairs held in New York.
Organized under the coordination of the Ministry of
Trade, UTİB’s national participation included two
fairs held concurrently on July 16-17, 2024. While
a total of 50 companies from Turkey participated in
the Premiere Vision New York Fair, 5 Turkish firms
took part in the Functional Fabric Fair Summer
Fair. Assessing the US market and the events, UTİB
President Pınar Taşdelen Engin highlighted the
significance of these initiatives for the sector. Engin
noted that the Premiere Vision New York Fair was the
47th edition and the Functional Fabric Fair was the 8th
edition, stating, “The US market is highly important
and a growing market for Turkish textile sector
exports. In the first half of the year, we achieved a 13%
growth in exports to the US, totaling $253 million.
While we have seen growth compared to last year, it
is not yet sufficient. As the world’s largest importer,
the US presents an opportunity for us to achieve
exports exceeding a billion dollars. We believe we can
achieve this goal with the normalization of economic
conditions and regaining price competitiveness.”
Engin also emphasized that Turkish companies
established significant collaborations during the fairs,
saying, “Our companies are attracting attention with
their quality and innovative products. Bursa plays a
crucial role in the development of the Turkish textile
sector in this regard. Alongside quality and innovation,
we are striving to enhance branding efforts. To
strengthen our presence in the US market, we need
to increase the number of branded companies. In the
first half of the year, UTİB achieved an 11% increase
in exports to the US, amounting to $58.5 million. We
will continue our efforts to reach the potential export
figures both in Bursa and throughout Turkey.”
due to repeated usage. The collection will bring
about a refined experience to consumers through its
exceptional durability, softness and color vibrancy.
Engineered for everyday use with enhanced
softness and durability
The Black Towel Collection is woven with a blend
of cotton and TENCEL Modal black fibers or
LENZING ECOVERO Viscose black fibers with
a unique fabric composition to enhance durability.
Even after multiple washes, these products retain
their softness and gentle feel on the skin, making
them ideal for repeated use. Derived from controlled
or certified wood sources, these specialty fibers
are made from resource-saving processes, using
at least 50% less carbon emissions and water
consumption1. Additionally, the LENZING
ECOVERO Viscose black fibers are certified
biodegradable and compostable at the end of their
lifecycle. Both reusable and responsibly produced,
this towel collection is an excellent solution
for individuals looking to minimize the carbon
footprint1 of their everyday care practices.
Long-lasting color vibrancy enabled by
resource-saving dyeing processes
Featuring a rich black color, the towels are dyed in
the fiber stage using the spin-dyeing technique, where
black color pigments are directly incorporated into
Featuring remarkable softness
after repeated washes, the
collection utilizes a spin-dyeing
technique that not only reduces
environmental impact3,4 during
dyeing process, but also ensures
lasting color intensity.
This helps towels retain color and quality longer,
reducing the need for frequent replacement.
Ebru Bayramoğlu,
“Most make-up removal towels,
including disposable cotton
towels, washable microfiber
cloths, and face towels, are
traditionally made from 100%
cotton. With consumers
increasingly aware of the
environmental impact of their
everyday face and body care
products, Lenzing sees an
opportunity to introduce a
sustainable alternative using our
cellulosic fibers.”
“Majority of the make-up removal towel offerings,
including disposable cotton towels, washable
microfiber, and face towels, are made with 100%
cotton. As consumers become more aware of the
environmental impact of their daily essential face
and body care products, we see an opportunity for
Lenzing to bring forth an alternative option using
our cellulosic fibers,” said Ebru Bayramoglu, Head
of Global Business Development in textiles business
at Lenzing. “Developed in collaboration with our
value chain partners, this Black Towel Collection
will be an inspirational offering to be showcased
at various retail outlets and highlighted during
upcoming trade events. Exceptionally soft and
durable even after repeated washes, our collection
is set to become a popular choice among conscious
consumers who want to make a difference to the
world through their daily personal care rituals.”
“We are proud to work with Lenzing to develop
our first Black Towel Collection. We have always
loved experimenting with different fiber blends and
fabric compositions to develop practical products
that address the everyday needs of consumers.
With this new offering, we hope that more brands
and consumers will come to realize that they can
be kinder to the world with small changes in their
everyday habits,” said Mustafa Soylu, Research and
Development Coordinator at Veritas Tekstil.
the fibers. The unique process uses 50% less energy
and water and does not require post-dye rinses,
substantially enabling a 60% decrease in carbon
footprint compared to conventional dyeing methods3.
The process also helps preserve color intensity even
after multiple washes and can mitigate the formation
of cream spots caused by contact with substances like
acne cream. With high color fastness, consumers also
do not have to worry about the black color staining
other garments in the washing process. Specifically,
the gym towels and beach towels in this collection
feature chlorine-resistant properties that minimize
discoloration and fabric damage caused by exposure
to chlorine in household water and swimming pools.
