Jessica Buchanan, widely recognized as “Make It Jess” on social media, began her professional 

journey as a full-time grade 7 and 8 teacher. However, she soon realized that a 

career in education did not align with her true passions and aspirations. This pivotal moment 

prompted her to leave teaching behind and embrace her creative calling as a makeup artist.

Passion for Transformation 

As a special effects makeup artist, Buchanan 

specializes in transforming herself into a 

variety of characters, animals, and fantastical 

creatures. Her favorite projects often involve 

intricate designs that require painting 

her entire upper body. This unique approach 

allows her to blend artistry with imagination, 

creating captivating looks that showcase her 

talent and creativity. 

Sharing Knowledge and Inspiring Others 

After transitioning from teaching, Buchanan 

began sharing her innovative makeup looks 

and cosplay transformations on platforms 

like TikTok and Instagram. Despite her success 

in the beauty industry, she felt a void 

without the educational aspect of her previous 

career. To bridge this gap, she launched 

the “Make It Jess Masterclass,” where she 

imparts the makeup knowledge she has acquired 

over the years, along with new TikTok 

makeup hacks. This initiative allows her to 

combine her love for makeup with her passion 

for teaching. 

Jessica Buchanan’s journey from educator 

to makeup artist is a testament to following

Manasse Rampino, an Italian artist, has 

gained recognition in Dubai’s burgeoning art 

scene for his unique blend of classical art

CAREL FABRITIUS’ 

THE GOLDFINCH 

Carel Fabritius, a key figure in Dutch Baroque art, created The Goldfinch, 

one of the most enduring paintings of the 17th century. Though 

small in size—only 13.4 by 9 inches—the artwork has captured the 

imagination of audiences for centuries. Housed in the Mauritshuis museum 

in The Hague, this simple yet profound piece exemplifies Fabritius’ 

mastery of trompe-l’oeil, a technique that creates the illusion of 

three-dimensionality, and offers a meditation on life’s fragility. 


Born in 1622, Fabritius trained under Rembrandt 

in Amsterdam but developed a 

lighter, more delicate style. His work embraced 

soft light and precision, setting 

him apart from his teacher’s dramatic approach. 

Tragically, Fabritius’ career was cut short when 

he died in the Delft explosion of 1654, leaving 

behind only a small number of paintings. Among 

these, The Goldfinch, painted the year of his 

death, remains a poignant reflection of life’s transience. 

While the painting may seem like a simple 

depiction of a pet goldfinch, there’s more than 

meets the eye. The bird is chained to its perch, 

symbolizing captivity—a stark contrast to the

Prize-winning novel The Goldfinch brought

Today, Fabritius’ The Goldfinch continues to 

captivate with its subtle power. It reminds viewers 

that, even in the smallest of paintings, there 

are profound truths waiting to be uncovered. The

ZEINAB ALHASHEMI

she draws inspiration from both her environment and Arab traditions, creating visually compelling 

works that explore the relationship between space, form, and meaning. Known for her sculptural

architecture, geometry, and technology. Her ability to bridge these disciplines makes her one of 

the most compelling figures in the art world, representing a generation of Middle Eastern artists 

pushing the boundaries of creativity. 

Zeinab AlHashemi’s work is often lauded for its ability to harmoniously 

blend traditional influences with contemporary 

aesthetics. Born and raised in the UAE, AlHashemi has a 

deep connection to her cultural roots, which frequently informs 

her artistic practice. She often draws inspiration from local traditions,

between the organic and the artificial is a recurring theme in Al- 

Hashemi’s work, where she uses natural shapes and patterns to address

Zeinab AlHashemi has earned widespread acclaim for her public

THE IMPORTANCE OF EARLY 

DETECTION AND SUPPORT

Every October, Breast Cancer Awareness 

Month shines a light on a disease 

that impacts over 2.3 million 

women globally each year. Known for 

its pink ribbons, the campaign goes beyond 

symbols to emphasize the importance of 

early detection, community support, and ongoing 

research. It’s a time for raising awareness, 

encouraging screening, and recognizing 

the varied experiences of those living 

with breast cancer. 

Screening for Early Detection 

A key focus of breast cancer awareness is 

the role of screening in early detection. While 

screenings, such as mammograms, cannot 

prevent breast cancer, they are vital in identifying 

the disease before symptoms appear. 

When breast cancer is found in its earliest 

stages, the five-year survival rate is as high 

as 99%, according to the American Cancer 

Society. 

Healthcare providers recommend regular 

screenings, typically starting at age 40, 

though those with increased risk may need 

to begin earlier. Talking to your doctor about 

the best screening schedule based on personal 

risk factors is crucial for early detection. 

Understanding Breast Cancer Stages 

Once breast cancer is diagnosed, staging is 

essential in determining how far the cancer 

has progressed and which treatment options 

are most suitable. Stage 1 breast cancer, 

considered early-stage and highly treatable, 

occurs when cancer cells have spread beyond 

their original location but remain localized. 

In Stage 2 breast cancer, the tumor may 

be larger or may have spread to nearby 

lymph nodes, but it’s still contained within 

the breast area. This stage is divided into two 

subcategories: Stage 2A and Stage 2B, depending 

on the size of the tumor and whether 

it has spread to nearby lymph nodes. 

Stage 3, or locally advanced breast cancer, 

means the cancer has spread to nearby 

tissues but not to distant organs. This stage 

often involves more aggressive treatment, 

such as surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation 

therapy. Despite the advanced stage, the 

five-year survival rate remains around 86%. 

Stage 4 and Metastatic Breast Cancer 

Stage 4 breast cancer, also known as metastatic 

breast cancer, occurs when the cancer 

has spread beyond the breast to other 

parts of the body, such as the bones, liver, 

or lungs. While not curable, Stage 4 breast 

cancer is treatable, and advances in treatment 

mean that many people live longer 

with improved quality of life. It’s estimated 

that 30% of women initially diagnosed with 

early-stage breast cancer may eventually 

develop metastatic breast cancer. 

Special Days for Awareness 

In addition to general awareness efforts, 

specific days throughout October focus on 

different aspects of breast cancer. Metastatic 

Breast Cancer Awareness Day, observed 

on October 13, draws attention to those living 

with Stage 4 breast cancer and the need 

for more research into advanced treatments. 

Men’s Breast Cancer Awareness Week, 

held from October 17–23, highlights the fact 

that breast cancer can affect men as well. In 

2024, around 2,800 men in the U.S. will be 

diagnosed with the disease. Raising awareness 

for men, as well as transgender and 

non-binary individuals, is crucial to ensuring 

everyone receives the necessary care and 

support. 

Supporting the Cause 

While Breast Cancer Awareness Month raises 

funds for research and emphasizes the 

importance of screening, it’s also a time to 

reflect on the emotional and physical realities 

faced by those living with breast cancer. 

The campaign encourages not only medical 

vigilance but also compassionate support 

for patients and survivors. 

In the end, the goal of Breast Cancer 

Awareness Month is not just about wearing 

pink—it’s about saving lives. By educating 

ourselves about screening, understanding 

the stages of the disease, and supporting 

continued research and care, we can make 

a significant impact in the fight against

Q. With over 20 years of experience in the 

makeup industry, what do you believe are 

the key elements that set a makeup artist 

apart in today’s competitive landscape? 

There’s a lot that can set you apart but I believe 

these 3 main points help in making your 

clients loyal to you in the long run. 

Your promptness in communication. The 

faster you’re able to answer your client’s 

questions, like checking availability etc, will 

help you get those bookings in faster. The 

way the world is today, nobody wants to wait 

a few hours for you to get back to them. Your 

clients will understand from the very beginning 

that they’re dealing with someone who 

is reliable. It can be tiresome to constantly 

check your phone, emails, DMs etc but this 

is part of the job (think of it as customer service, 

when you get quick and hassle free 

customer service, you go back to that place 

over and over again). 

Energy - the energy that you have when 

you walk into your client’s home or their 

space is how they’ll remember you. Most 

women can feel slightly insecure with their 

looks, so if you’re able to make them feel 

at ease, comfortable and assured with how 

they look- they’ll remember you as the person 

that only made them look beautiful, but 

FEEL beautiful as well. 

Trust your gut - there have been several 

times when clients have asked me to do 

certain looks, or asked me to use certain 

shades, that I knew wouldn’t suit them or 

wouldn’t be as flattering. Instead of just shutting 

their requests down, have a conversation 

on why is it that they want that. Are they 

just following a trend, have they done it before 

hence why they feel it suits them, was it 

a recommendation from someone else ? It’s 

important to understand where they’re coming 

from and then give them your professional 

advice. Remember, they’ve booked you 

for a reason. They know that you have the 

skills so trust your gut when you know something 

won’t look right.

Such a hard question but I’ll narrow this 

down as much as possible. 

• Bioderma Micellar Water (the easiest

that is non-irritating as well). 

• Urban Decay All Nighter Waterproof 

makeup setting spray.

Q. Having worked with brands like Guerlain, 

M.A.C, and Illamasqua, how has your 

approach to makeup evolved over the 

years, and what have been some of your 

most significant learnings? 

Having worked with several of the biggest 

names in the beauty industry, I’ve learnt that 

it’s crucial to constantly keep an open mind. 

Be open to learning from other artists. Makeup 

is Art. There’s no right or wrong. It’s about 

expression. Experiment as much as you 

can. Maybe you’ve mastered the techniques 

of contour and sculpting- well change it up, 

and try to master using just a few drops of 

foundation instead. Beauty brands are always 

reinventing themselves in some way or 

another, so as an artist I think it’s crucial that 

we break the beauty routines that we’re used 

to otherwise it’s easy to become someone 

that is no longer relevant. 

Q. In 2019, you launched THEMAEKUP- 

CLASS in the UAE. What inspired you to 

create this event, and how do you see it 

influencing the local makeup and beauty 

industry? 

I wanted to create a space that included talent, 

artistry and brought together like-minded 

individuals that were passionate about 

makeup and beauty. I’ve attended several 

makeup industry events in the US and UK, 

and felt there was a huge need for it here 

in the UAE. There have been masterclasses 

here but not an industry event where you can 

discover new beauty brands, shop, meet 

other MUA’s in the industry and learn from 

them- all in one space. 

Beauty is such an integral part of the Arab 

culture and over the past decade there’s 

been a huge shift. Women are much more 

confident in experimenting with makeup 

styles and approach to beauty so these 

events really benefit and enrich the community. 


Q. Makeup trends are constantly evolving. What current trends 

do you find most exciting, and which ones do you think will have 

a lasting impact on the industry? 

There’s so much more emphasis on skincare+makeup now. Over 10 

years ago, you’d mostly be asked about the brow pomade you were 

using or what your go-to eye kohl was? 

Now, it’s all about the skincare prep that you use before your 

makeup. It’s about achieving flawless skin using minimal makeup. 

Can you create a flawless look using 5 products versus 15 ? 

Blush is back but this time it’s all about placement ! Also, there is 

so much more individual expression now. It’s great seeing graphic 

liners in every color possible. Like, who said that liner always needs 

to be black ? I think the general consensus is that this is something 

personal and as long as you’re comfortable with how you look, then 

that’s all that matters. 

Q. Halloween makeup is a growing trend. As an experienced 

makeup artist, what advice would you give to someone looking 

to create a standout Halloween look? 

Plan ahead. Do your research. Are you going for : character, glam 

but artsy or just scary ? There’s 3 different scenarios when it comes 

to Halloween makeup, so figure out which route fits you best. If 

you’re planning on adding texture such as crystals, pearls or latex 

then you’ll probably have to source for these ahead of time. Use a 

white pencil to trace the look on your face before going in directly. 

If you have time on your hands, I’d even say to create the look in 

advance just so you can get a hang off it and feel more comfortable 

on the day itself. 

Q. There’s often a debate around the concept of “too much makeup.” 

In your opinion, is there such a thing as wearing too much 

makeup, or is it all about personal expression and confidence? 

Personally, I don’t believe in “too much” or even “too little” makeup. 

But what I do see is a lot of makeup that isn’t blended enough. Too 

many harsh contour lines are a personal pet peeve. But all in all, the 

only thing that should matter is that you feel good when you look at 

yourself.

Q. Ezeenah has introduced many indie and prestige beauty 

brands to the UAE market. How do you decide which brands 

to feature, and what qualities do you look for when selecting 

products for your store? 

As an avid beauty enthusiast and a professional MUA, I look at 

brands a lot more deeper than the average consumer. Some beauty 

stores, may focus on the labels that they carry. While that will give 

you leverage in terms of demand for popular products, I look at the 

benefit the brand provides (will it do what it claims- I test a lot of the 

products before stocking them), price point and I do have a higher 

preference for brands that are more eco-conscious.

Q. You continuously participate in trainings and masterclasses 

to refine your skills. How important do you think ongoing education 

is for makeup artists, and what areas do you believe are 

crucial for artists to focus on in the future? 

This is by far the lifeline you’re giving to your career as an MUA 

when you invest in your personal development. 

1st - the obvious reason is that you may learn a few tricks that will 

up your makeup game. 

2nd - you are feeding your passion. Being a makeup artist is not 

for the faint-hearted. We are on our feet for hours on end, and majority 

of us suffer from some form of back pain. So keeping your 

passion alive is crucial to your craft. 

3rd- the networking possibilities when you attend conferences, 

masterclasses even if their online are substantial. I’ve met makeup 

founders like Danessa Myricks, Makeup by Mario and ReAnn Silva 

(beautyblender) through various masterclasses and events. 

In terms of the future, I think MUA’s should start building more 

social media content on their work. Invest in filming equipment or 

better lighting, even take some classes on how you could possibly 

photograph your work better.

Q. Can you suggest some tips for preventing early signs 

of aging, especially for people in their 20s and 30s? 

In your early 20’s and 30’s , I would suggest using skin 

specific moisturizer, perhaps add an antioxidant such as 

vitamin c serum on the face and around eyes as the eyes 

show first signs of aging and there could be few superficial 

wrinkles particularly those with dry skin types. Hyluronic 

based boosters are also a choice of treatment and preventative 

measure for aging in this group. 

Q. What are the most effective ingredients we should 

look for in moisturizers and serums? 

The ingredients in your moisturizer ingredients would depend 

on your skin type. A very dry skin type would require 

something with a combination of white soft paraffin and or 

liquid paraffin, hyaluronic acid to hydrate well either in the 

form of a cream or lotion (depending on how dry your skin 

is). People with olier skin, on the other hand, should be 

using more of a glycerin hyluronic acid, niacinamide and 

other similar humectants which dont clog pores but attract

Microneedling devices are the newer generation reduced

skin pores , however they do have a less powerful effect 

compared to standard fractional lasers so in essence you 

might need 4 sessions of microneedling compared to one 

session of C02, but with reduced down time. Chemical 

peels still remain the gold standard for treating pigmentary 

conditions. 

Q. How often should sunscreen be reapplied, especially 

in humid or hot climates, and what SPF level is ideal for 

everyday use? 

Sunblocks typically dont last on skin more than 4-5 hours 

depending on your skin type. Sunblock should ideally be 

applied thrice a day for eg 9am, 12 pm, 3 pm. SPF 30 and 

above is a minimum requirement. 

Q. Are there any over-the-counter products you would 

warn against using, especially those that may be popular 

on social media? 

There are probably several thousand products I would not 

recommend using , im not against the product per se , im 

against the way its branded for the recommendation . Most 

non pharmaceutical grade products will contain fragrance 

which may not suit many skin types , then the non comedogenicity 

value is zero as they are cosmeceutical grade 

products and hence it may be a registered product in the 

country but it does not mean its safe for all skin types .

A thumb rule I give my patients is your friend or mother or 

sister may be a normal - dry skin type and hence may suit 

most products but if your skin is sensitive , oily or comedogenic, 

you will need the recommendations of a dermatologist

the basic care of a cleanser, toner, light moisturiser and 

sunscreen. Also do a peel every month to rejuvenate or 

detan your skin depending on your skin type, its the most 

inexpensive option to glow and anti age your skin! Do an 

invasive treatment or laser skin treatments only based on 

your skin type and the condition in concern.

Catherine Holstein’s Khaite collection at New York Fashion Week was an

edge. However, this season, the designer displayed a newfound tenderness, 

which she attributed to her personal life as a mother. “I think I’m just 

feeling a little warmer these days, a little earthier,” Holstein said backstage.

The presentation began with a stunning 

contrast of a cropped, fitted black jacket in 

exaggerated proportions coupled with translucent 

organza trousers. This initial appearance 

adhered to Holstein’s recognized aesthetic, 

but as the collection proceeded, her

Hand-knit ribbon peplum tops combined 

with midi skirts, crocheted separates like an 

apron shirt over slim slacks, and ethereal organza 

tubes braided into eveningwear, each

not my comfort zone, but I wanted to venture

colors. These components are combined and layered in each piece to produce 

vivid new imagery that conveys the erratic beauty and tenacity of nature 

in the face of calamity. In addition to reflecting the physical destruction, 

Qureshi’s art is a profoundly intimate reaction to the memories seared into 

his brain. Through this piece of work, Qureshi provides a potent reflection 

on the relationship between memory, humanity, and the natural world while 

allowing viewers to experience the emotional and environmental fallout from 

these floods.
