Digging her way to
victory

“I WON IT for the girls.”
That was the reaction from
Georgia Lyford after she beat out
25 other digger operators at a
region-wide competition.
Georgia Lyford from Schick
Civil Construction Ltd in Middleton
was the only female competitor
at the Canterbury/Westland
regional excavator operator
competition.
Lyford won the experienced
category, and will move on to the
national finals competition in
Feilding in March.
It was Lyford’s third time in
the competition, and she wanted
to redeem herself after not being
satisfied with her performance at
last year’s event.
“I’m only 23 so it will be cool
to go to the finals in Feilding and
prove to other young girls considering
a career in civil construction
that we can do it too,” she said.
The competition included a
range of challenges to test operators’
precision, from slam dunking
a basketball using an excavator’s
bucket, to deftly pouring a cup of
tea using a special attachment on
the end of their excavator’s arm.
It also included more conventional
tests of skill such as truck
loading and traversing obstacles,
as well as theory-based challenges
requiring operators to demonstrate
health and safety knowledge
and awareness of underground
services and on-site hazards.
Organiser James Flower said the
year’s event was a success.
“The weather was perfect, and
the enthusiastic support from
friends, family, and the public
contributed to a lively atmosphere
throughout the day.
“One of the standout challenges
was the ‘egg and spoon’
event, where competitors had to
delicately pick up an egg from a
sandpile with a spoon attached to
their excavator and place it into a
small cup,” Flower said.
“There were certainly moments
that left the audience in stitches, as
a few competitors ended up with
their eggs scrambled.”
Flower said there was a shortage
of excavator operators nationally
and the event aimed to both
celebrate existing operators and
inspire other people to consider
joining the industry.
FOR THE GIRLS: Georgia Lyford, the only female competitor, won the experienced
category at the Canterbury/Westland regional excavator operation competition. Tasks like
the egg and spoon challenge (above) were part of a range of skills competitors needed to
demonstrate.

Library seeking photos
of city’s active heritage

tucked away in your cupboard, left on a
digital camera SD card or stashed on your
phone – now’s the time to dig them out.
The annual Christchurch City Libraries’
Photo Hunt is under way and will run
until October 31.
The event aims to digitally gather
photographs from across the community
alongside the Christchurch Heritage
Festival which opens on Saturday.
This year’s theme is Active Heritage –
Sport, Recreation and Leisure.
Said city council head of libraries and
information Carolyn Robertson: “The
photo hunt gives people the chance to
share some of their precious memories
and highlight key moments in our city’s
history, each photo comes with its own
unique story.
“We’ve held the event every year
since 2008 and it’s a wonderful way to
help with our goal of creating a photographic
archive of the life and times of
Ōtautahi-Christchurch and Te Pātaka o
Rākaihautū-Banks Peninsula.”
The 2023 overall winner New Beginnings
in NZ features a sun-drenched Dutch
migrant leaning against a doorframe in
1950s Christchurch.
Said the judges: “This well composed
photograph gives us an insight into the
life of a Dutch migrant who has arrived
in 1950s Christchurch. After having lived
through the horrors of the Second World

Success leads to scholarships for teen racers

A CHRISTCHURCH Boys’
High School student will
compete in one of New Zealand’s
top junior motor racing
championships this year after
winning a major scholarship.
Chris White, 17, was awarded
$54,000 from the Tony Quinn
Foundation to go towards his
racing.
He will compete in the Toyota
GR86 Championship, starting
next month at the Taupō International
Motorsport Park, alongside
best mate Blake Knowles –
who left Boys’ High at the end of
last year to work full-time.
Knowles was awarded $50,000
and a new Toyota GR86 by the
Wolfbrook Motorsport Foundation
to compete in the series.
White, who won the Mazda
Racing Championship earlier
this year, won his scholarship
after a successful shootout with
three other young drivers from
around New Zealand.
“We presented a whole lot of
media stuff to a board, and then
a lot of driving, (which was) the
important part, but then the next
step was proving that you’ve got
promotional skills and you can
actually promote your brand,”
he said.
He said it was special to be
competing alongside Knowles
– the pair went to preschool together
and started karting at the
Carrs Rd track at age nine.

best friends since preschool and
always raced alongside each other
in go-karting and then now to be
competing in (GR)86.
“It was really unexpected and
I’m pretty excited to race alongside
him.”
White was looking forward to
the series getting under way.
“I’ve been watching it for about
six years now, never thought
about competing in it.
“When I found out we’re doing
it, I was pretty rapt, and since then
I’ve just been itching to do it.”
It’s the next step to his dream of
racing in Supercars like his idols,
Shane van Gisbergen and Scott
McLaughlin.

earlier this year. He’s been awarded $50,000 and a new
Toyota GR86 to race in, thanks to the Wolfbrook Motorsport
Foundation.

“(Hopefully) just have a major
success in the Toyota series and
then if that goes well hopefully we
can jump the ditch to Aussie and
race Porsches and then progress to
V8 supercars,” White said.
“I’ve always wished that’s where
I could go, but now I think there’s
actually a possibility that we
could get there, so we’ll see what
happens in the future.
“Hopefully we can do it.”

A DUTCH DRAMA group is on cue
for a successful run of its annual play
performance.
The Toenail Culture Ale drama group
formed in 2001 and performs its plays in
Dutch.
Next week, they will be performing
Marathon, a comedy drama adapted from
the 2012 Dutch movie De Marathon.
The play follows four women who are
trying to save their car garage by running
a marathon.
The group currently has 10 members, all
of whom where born in the Netherlands.
Member Hank Steffors said the group
began as a way to give Dutch immigrants
an opportunity to perform in their native
language.
“We are really cultural. Even the pieces
we perform, we get them from Holland.
“We like to perform still because it’s
important to keep your Dutch heritage
intact.”
Stoffers said the group selects plays written
in the Netherlands, and re-works them
to fit the demographics of the group at that
point in time.
Most of the group is female, with Stoffers
being the only male member.
De Marathon revolves around a group
of four men, so some parts of the plot and
characters have been re-worked due to the
group’s gender imbalance.
The play has been written by group
member Annekatrien Verbraak.
Due to the lack of male actors, Stoffers
will be playing three male characters, and
stand-in actor Vincent Nydam will play
the remaining two men.

The group uses the Dutch-owned
Everglades Golf Club in Ouruhia as its
home base, and Stoffers built the stage
they perform and practice on.
The group have been preparing Marathon
since February, and will perform
three shows from October 18-20.
Stoffers said the group is always looking
for more members, particularly in the
younger demographic.
“I think it’s important we keep
this going, but we need to have some
young people to fall in love with drama
productions.
“It’s a very good thing to keep up your
language, and if you want to learn the
Dutch language then this is quite a good
pathway for young people to keep their
heritage.”

Hearty fare with new season flavours
Spring sunshine and fat
bunches of asparagus
are here to lift our
spirits, but these early
spring days often end
with a chill and the
need for a ‘proper
dinner’, writes Nigel
Slater
Asparagus with
wild garlic hollandaise
When I first started cooking,
hollandaise carried a certain
terror. A fear that vanished once
I cottoned on that all will be well
as long as you add the butter
slowly, drop-by-drop at first, and
that the sauce mustn’t get too
hot.
Ingredients
Serves 2 as a light lunch
400g asparagus
4 slices sourdough bread or
focaccia
For the hollandaise:
3 egg yolks
2tsp white wine vinegar
200g melted butter
50g wild garlic leaves
a squeeze of lemon juice
Method
• To make the hollandaise
sauce, put a pan of water on to
boil and find a heatproof glass
or china bowl that will fit neatly
into it without touching the
water. Drop in the egg yolks and
vinegar. Whisk in the melted
butter, very slowly at first, then in
an intermittent stream, whisking
all the time until you have a
thick, creamy sauce.
• Finely chop the garlic leaves
and stir into the sauce, along
with the lemon. Remove the
pan from the heat, but leave the
bowl over the water. Whisk from
time to time to prevent it from
separating.
• For the asparagus, bring a
large pot of water to the boil.
Trim the asparagus, removing
any dry ends.
• Lower in the asparagus and
leave to cook for 5-7 minutes,
depending on the thickness of
the spears. I like to cook them
until they are just tender enough
to bend. Remove from the water
with a draining spoon or kitchen
tongs (tipping into a colander
may damage the fragile tips),
then let them drain.
• Toast the slices of bread
lightly, then place a spoonful
of sauce on each. Divide the
asparagus between them, then
spoon over some of the sauce
and serve any extra at the side.
Lamb with rose harissa
and apricots
Like many such casseroles, this
is something of a keeper and will
come to no harm if kept in the
fridge for a couple of days.
Ingredients
Serves 4
2 tsp ground cinnamon
2 tsp ground cumin
2 tsp ground turmeric
1 tsp hot paprika
2 tbsp olive oil
1kg diced lamb shoulder
2 medium onions
4 garlic cloves
250g dried apricots
60g sultanas
2 tbsp honey
750ml stock
2 x 400g cans chopped tomatoes
2 tbsp rose harissa
1 lemon
Method
• Put the ground spices –
cinnamon, cumin, turmeric,
paprika – into a mixing bowl, add
the lamb, toss thoroughly and set
aside for a couple of hours. If it’s
an option to leave overnight, that
would be even better.
• Set the oven at 180C. Warm
the oil in a deep, heavy-based
casserole dish over a moderate to
high heat, then add the lamb and
fry until lightly browned, stirring
and turning the meat from time
to time. Take care not to let the
spices burn.
• While the meat is frying, peel
and roughly chop the onions.
Lift the meat out with a draining
spoon and set aside, then add the
onions to the pan (with a little
more oil if necessary) and let them
cook for a good 10-15 minutes,
stirring regularly over a moderate
heat. Peel and thinly slice the
garlic, then add to the onions.
• Halve and stone the apricots,
if they have stones. Add the
sultanas, honey, stock, tomatoes
and apricots and bring to the boil.
Lower the heat, add the browned
meat and cover with a lid.
• Transfer the casserole to the
oven and cook for 2 hours till the
meat is tender, but not soft.
• Stir in the rose harissa and the
juice of half the lemon; taste and
adjust with more lemon, harissa
and salt if you wish.
