Deployment
A powerful tool for public and private fleet management to
advance environmental sustainability and address the historical
injustices tied to transportation and the environment.
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and
the U.S. Department of Energy, the transportation sector
accounts for more than 28% of greenhouse gas emissions in
the United States (Carbon Pollution From Transportation | US
EPA, 2024). Light-duty vehicles as well as medium- and
heavy-duty vehicles contribute 37% and 23% respectively,
the highest among transportation sector emissions.
With over 18 million diesel-powered vehicles on the road in
the U.S. and less than 10% of U.S. vehicles purchased being
powered by electricity, investments like the federal
Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the Inflation Reduction
Act, coupled with scores of state and local laws, are critical to ensuring vehicle electrification
efforts are ramping up.
Fleet managers are essential to ensuring the efficient and equitable deployment of electric
vehicles across various industries including heavy-duty freight trucks, light-duty delivery vans,
public transit buses, and private ride-sharing vehicles. These professionals play a crucial role in
optimizing vehicle utilization, managing charging infrastructure, and implementing
sustainable practices to support the transition to a cleaner transportation future.
Fleet vehicles used for freight, utility services, or delivery vans are all significant contributors to
air pollution. Focusing on deploying electric solutions for these vehicles can result in significant
public health benefits. However, electric vehicles, charging stations, and electricity generation
infrastructure need to be distributed equitably so that vulnerable populations are not unduly
burdened by the transition. This is important because, historically, highways, bus depots and
other transportation infrastructure and facilities have been sited or placed in communities of
color, contributing to disproportionate rates of asthma and other respiratory diseases.
UNDERSTANDING FLEET EQUITY
Fleet equity is the practice of ensuring that the benefits of sustainable transportation and
electric vehicle (EV) adoption are accessible to and felt by all members of our community,
irrespective of their socioeconomic background or geographical location. Fleets can play
multiple roles in doing so. Though the commitment remains the same for fleets that move
commodities and goods, companies must strategically deploy vehicles and charging
infrastructure to deliver operational benefits. Fleet equity includes considerations at every step
of the process, from EV planning to deployment, all the way through retirement and the selling
or destruction of electric vehicles. Fleet equity isn't just about reducing carbon emissions; it's
about creating a more equitable and just society.
BUILDING AN INCLUSIVE TRANSIT FUTURE
WITH FLEETS
Simply buying and deploying electric vehicles will not improve public
health & racial disparities for population groups that have and continue to
suffer from over exposure to toxic air from gas-and diesel-powered
vehicles. Though these burdens persist, fleets can play an active part in
the solution and help alleviate historical scars by ensuring the benefits of
shifting to sustainable, zero-emission EVs are felt in these communities.
It’s important that fleet managers take intentional steps to solidify
equity at the center of its efforts to advance fleet electrification.
