Considering the Unexpected: What to do when you are away from home?
At times, the unthinkable happens
away from home when experiencing the
loss of a loved one out of state. This is an
instance where we have supported families
for over 130 years over the course of five
generations and one family.
At the Murphy Funeral Home, we
are a member of Selected Independent
Funeral Homes, which is an invitation
only organization that was established in
1917 under the name of National Selected
Morticians (NSM). Funeral homes are
invited to be a part of this organization
after being evaluated for their character,
professional ability and reputation. Within
this organization, we have a network of
funeral homes that we work with across
the country who have assisted us when
a passing takes place away from home
in bringing loved ones back into our
community.
When we receive a phone call of a
passing like this, we contact a NSM
funeral home nearest to the passing. The
funeral home we contact is able to assist
us in bringing your loved one back to
their funeral home and filing the death
certificate and permit in accordance with
your wishes (burial permit, cremation
permit, transportation permit).
Should those wishes be an earthen
burial back home, we go through the
process of coordinating your loved one
being brought back home. If the distance
falls within the New England/Northeast
Region (Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire,
New York, New Jersey, Connecticut,
Rhode Island) our staff will bring them
back home via our service vehicle. Should
the distance be further, and it be deemed
more appropriate for air travel, we take
care of coordinating the flight for your
loved one to return home.
Should those wishes be cremation,
it is often best for us to arrange for the
cremation to take place in that state and
the creamains brought back to our care
following the cremation. The return of the
ashes back home here can occur in several
ways, including participation from the
ASK THE EXPERT
family should they also be out of state or
with us following the steps as we would
for an earthen burial.
Upon your loved one’s return home, we
can arrange and facilitate the services you
and your family would like as we would if
a passing occurred in
Massachusetts. For more information
about this topic or other questions about
funeral arrangements, please contact us
here to schedule a time to meet with one
of us. We would be more than honored to
assist you.
Along with my colleagues, Francis J.
Murphy, Robert Clocher, and Christopher
M.J. Ellis, we here at Murphy Funeral
Home are proud and honored to assist
members of our community. I encourage
arrangements similar to these or any other
funeral related questions to call us at 978-
4 tips to stay on top of fraudster's latest tricks
StatePoint
Identity theft is reportedly
a growing threat as fraudsters
evolve to be savvier and more
sophisticated. There have been
more than 1,300 data breaches
already in 2024, according to the
Identity Theft Resource Center.
It’s no surprise an Experian
survey found that many consumers
are wising up to the risk, with
over half the U.S. adult population
saying they’re highly concerned
about identity theft and fraud.
“As fraudsters continue to
become more sophisticated, it’s
critical that you take matters
into your own hands and protect
your personal information,”
said Michael Bruemmer, vice
president of Experian Global Data
Breach Resolution and Consumer
Protection at Experian.
To help you avoid becoming a
victim of fraud, there are a few
key tips you should follow:
Create strong passwords:
Create strong passwords for every
account you have and don’t repeat
passwords. If you reuse the same
password across multiple accounts
and a criminal gets ahold of it,
they can potentially wreak havoc
on your personal and financial
life. A password manager can help
you create unique passwords and
store them so you don’t need to
remember them all on your own.
Protect personal documents:
Keep all your personal documents
out of the hands of fraudsters,
especially your social security
card, as it can quickly open the
door to identity theft. Leave
your social security card in a
safe place at home–don’t carry
it with you. Additionally, check
Delta Dental & Blue Cross
Provider and accept most
insurances
your mail every day to prevent
theft of potentially sensitive data.
Shred paperwork with personal
information on it before throwing
it away. Also, consider having
statements delivered electronically
so there are fewer physical
documents with your information
on them.
Watch out for phishing scams:
Phishing uses fake text messages,
emails, phone calls or other types
of communication that look
like it comes from a reputable
source. The fraudster’s goal is
to make you click on a link or
open an attachment and share
your personal information.
After clicking the fake link and
using your login credentials, the
scammer can gain access to your
account. To protect yourself from
these types of scams, never click
on a link or open an attachment
from someone or a company that
you don’t recognize or that looks
suspicious. Additionally, if you
receive notice that your personal
information was involved in a data
breach, be cautious about hackers
who may imitate the company
you received the breach notice
from. To verify the legitimacy of
the communication, identify the
correct phone number by looking
at physical statements or by
logging into your account through
a verified portal and call or email
the company separately.
Use caution when answering
calls: Criminals may try to call
you and pretend that they are with
a company you are associated
with in order to have you provide
your personal information. Never
provide information over the
phone.
Take Advantage of lower
rates—sell your home
As a senior homeowner, you
may have been holding off on
selling your home, waiting for
interest rates to drop. With the
recent decrease in rates, now
is an excellent time to consider
putting your home on the market.
This change presents unique
opportunities for sellers, as lower
interest rates tend to attract more
buyers. Waiting too long, however,
could mean missing out on
motivated buyers who are eager to
make a move before rates fluctuate
again.
Downsizing now could not
only free up valuable equity for
your retirement but also reduce
the responsibilities that come with
maintaining a larger home. By
selling, you could use the proceeds
to support your lifestyle, travel, or
even invest in a more manageable
property.
If you're unsure how to get your
home ready for sale, a trusted real
estate professional can guide you
through the process. They can help
with everything from staging and
repairs to marketing your home
so that it stands out in today's
competitive market.
The Law Office of Julie Low
practices exclusively in elder law,
estate planning, probate and estate
administration, and special-needs
planning.
The firm designs customized,
comprehensive will-based and trustbased
estate plans to meet each client’s
unique needs. Whether your goal is to
protect assets from future long-term
care costs, minimize estate taxes and
administration fees, ensure a legacy
for your descendants, provide for
your needs in the event of incapacity
or protect and provide for a family
member with special needs, the Law
Office of Julie Low can design an
estate plan that meets your objectives.
Attorney Low opened her
Beverlybased firm because she had
a vision for the way law should be
practiced — with a focus on the client
Wondering how to protect your assets?
The Law Office of Julie Low can help
instead of billable hours.
She believes in creating an inviting,
personable atmosphere where clients
feel comfortable discussing very
personal subjects. Attorney Low
fully engages her clients in the design
process, educating and guiding them
to make informed decisions. The
end result is a comprehensive plan
clients understand, rather than a set
of documents that have little personal
meaning.
The firm charges fixed prices
instead of traditional hourly rates
for estate planning. Attorney Low
believes clients appreciate knowing
the cost of services up front and the
open communication such an approach
fosters.
Client meetings are centered around
important issues — not the clock
— and are handled with a touch of
lightheartedness, when appropriate,
"because contemplating disability,
incapacity or death is not a delightful or
pleasant experience for most."
Clients are invited to contact Julie,
or a team member, with questions,
without worrying about being billed for
extra time.
One of the firm’s specialties is the
creation of Long-Term Care Plans to
help clients navigate the complicated
regulations of Medicaid, Veterans
Benefits and other government
programs.
Because Julie is knowledgeable in
planning for both types of Medicaid
(traditional nursing home and the lesser
known, but unbelievably beneficial,
community programs), she reviews
her clients’ options with an eye to all
programs to ensure each plan provides
later flexibility.
Julie is a member of
WealthCounsel, ElderCounsel,
The National Academy of Elder Law
Attorneys (NAELA), and The
Academy of Special Needs Planners.
She graduated cum laude from
Western New England University
School of Law in 2007.
In her free time, Julie volunteers
with North Shore Elder Services’
Money Management Program,
assisting local seniors with paying
bills and budgeting, and on Northeast
ARC’s Human Rights Committee.
Making a Move to Kaplan
Estates Assisted Living
With numerous assisted
living communities on the North
Shore, it’s interesting to note
how perspective residents find a
residence best suited to their needs.
At Harriett and Ralph Kaplan
Estates, a continuum of care
community located on Chelsea
Jewish Lifecare’s Peabody campus
and operated by Legacy Lifecare,
it’s often a matter of talking to
family and friends. “Most people
find out about us via wordof
mouth,” explained Antonio
Alvarez, Director of Community
Relations at Kaplan Estates.
“Individuals are often referred to
us by friends and family members
who have stayed on the continuing
care campus, whether it be for
assisted living at Kaplan Estates,
Shapiro-Rudolph for Adult Day
Health or at the Brudnick Center
for Living for Short-Term Rehab or
Long-Term Care. Our reputation is
key. In fact, many people decide
not to even tour other communities.
That’s incredibly rare in this
industry.”
It has been a busy summer and
fall at Kaplan Estates. The building,
which accommodates 144 residents
in total, is filled to capacity. “It’s a
pleasure to welcome new residents
into the mix and to witness the
spirit of camaraderie among staff
and residents,” said Alvarez.
Polly Trudeau moved to Kaplan
Estates this past spring to recover
from a fall. She credits the staff
with making the transition
seamless. “I’ve never met a group
of people so helpful in my entire
life!” exclaimed Polly. Although
Polly grew up in the Peabody/
Salem area, she was not familiar
with the Chelsea Jewish Lifecare
campus. After her fall, Polly spent a
month at Salem Hospital, which led
to an additional month of Rehab
at Brudnick Center for Living.
From there, it was a logical step to
move into an apartment at Kaplan
Estates.
Since Polly still has limited
mobility, she has not been able to
participate in many activities as
of yet but still finds ways to meet
residents and acclimate herself
to her new home. “I walk in the
hallways every few hours, believe
it or not. It’s actually a great way
to meet people!” said Polly with a
laugh. “Everyone has been friendly
and welcoming.” Added Polly, “I
really like that the staff comes in
to check on me frequently and a
marvelous CNA helps me get ready
for bed. It’s comforting to know I
am not alone.”
The staff pulls together to
facilitate the move -in process.
Each department takes the time
before and after move-in to make
sure that the resident’s care plan
and social experience not only
caters to the individual’s core
needs, but also to their personality
and who they are as an individual.
“It’s essential that our residents
and families know that they have
support in getting oriented to
their new environment,” stressed
Alavarez. “The assisted living
assigns an ambassador who
dedicates time to ensure the
resident is assisted in navigating
their new surroundings. We
encourage our residents to meet
new people and try new activities
that they have never done before.
Jill Hemeon, Area Director of
Community Relations at Chelsea
Jewish Lifecare, pointed out
that a key advantage of moving
into a Chelsea Jewish Lifecare
community is the accessibility
to many different levels of care.
“Whether you are looking for
additional daily care needs, an
all-inclusive setting, or just to
socialize a bit, it is always smart
to think about what the future
may hold. Many individuals find
comfort in knowing that our
community is set up so residents
may age in place through our
continuum of care.”
For Marjorie Snow, the respite
program at Kaplan Estates enabled
her to make a full recovery after
surgery. She stayed at Kaplan
Estates for a month to recuperate
after surgery and thoroughly
enjoyed the experience. “The staff
was always so pleasant. I never
felt lonely, which I think is really
important. “Marjorie made a point
to stay active and participate in
activities. She enjoyed lectures,
bingo, trivia games and meals
in the dining room. “The food is
really good. I love the variety of
homemade soups!” Now living in
her home, Marjorie hopes to rejoin
her Kaplan Estates family at some
point. “I had such a good time
during my stay,” said Marjorie.
“Mark my words, I’ll be back!”
“Moving to a senior living
community can be extremely
emotional and physically
challenging,” said Hemeon. “We
want people to know that our team
is here to assist future residents and
their loved ones in making a move
as smooth as possible.” Jill advises
new residents to give themselves
time to settle in. “Our overall goal
is to ensure a better quality of life
for all of our residents.”
Carolyn and Ron Paskavitz
decided to move to the Peabody
campus after touring other
residences with their children.
Carolyn recalled knowing that
Kaplan Estates was the right choice
the minute she walked through the
doors. “I really can’t explain it,”
mused Carolyn. “Everyone was so
warm and welcoming. We could
sense immediately that the staff
really cares about the residents.”
Both Carolyn and Ron enjoy
the sing-a-longs, games, movies
and a full roster of activities.
Shabbat services, in particular,
is a ritual they look forward to
every week. “Although I am not
Jewish,” remarked Carolyn. “I
love attending Shabbat services on
Fridays. It’s a beautiful tradition.”
The couple’s six children and
eight grandchildren are frequent
visitors. They used the Garden
Kitchen to host parties. “It was
wonderful having the whole family
together,” remarked Carolyn.
Today, the couple is excited about
the future. “I originally thought it
would be hard to adjust to assisted
living,” said Carolyn, “but clearly,
I was wrong. I truly feel like we are
home.”
The staff at Kaplan Estates
welcome visitors and is pleased to
schedule tours as well as time with
staff, residents and families. Please
SENIOR ACTIVE LIVING FALL 2024 ESSEX MEDIA GROUP 11
Financing the care of loved ones with a disability
StatePoint
According to the U.S. Census
Bureau, over one in four Americans
are living with a disability and
about one-half of these individuals
are living with a severe disability.
Whether present at birth or
caused by a life-altering accident
or illness, severe disabilities almost
always create a significant financial
burden due to curtailed earning
power and ongoing expenses.
That’s where a specialized trust or
savings account may help both the
individual with special needs, and
their families.
To help individuals and families
understand their options, Wells
Fargo is sharing information about
Special Needs Trusts (SNTs) and
Achieving a Better Life Experience
(ABLE) accounts.
What are special needs trusts?
SNTs are irrevocable trusts drafted
by an attorney. They’re used to set
aside money or property to cover
the needs of individuals living with
physical, mental or developmental
disabilities who may not have the
ability or legal capacity to manage
their assets and keep detailed
records.
How are SNTs funded? The two
types of SNTs depend on the source
of funding:
• First-party SNTs are funded
with money the beneficiary owns,
or is awarded as compensation
for medical malpractice, personal
injury or another type of legal
settlement. Typically, they’re
created by the beneficiary’s parents,
grandparent, legal guardian, or
a court, and are for beneficiaries
under 65. When the trust
terminates, Medicaid is entitled
to reimbursement of any funds
expended on the beneficiary.
• Third-party SNTs can be
established at any time by someone
wishing to provide for a minor or
adult with special needs, including
as part of an estate plan. Unlike
fi r s t - p a r t y t r u s t s , t h e y m a y b e
created by anyone, and there is no
age restriction on the beneficiary.
The terms may be modified,
and there is no reimbursement
requirement to government
programs. While advantageous,
their complexity often requires
professional assistance.
What are SNTs’ benefits? An
SNT can help you or a loved one:
1. Meet current cash flow needs
and plan for the future.
2. Preserve eligibility for
governmental benefits. People
living with disabilities may
become ineligible for state and
federal benefits if their income and
resources exceed certain thresholds.
Under federal law and regulations,
an SNT helps ensure a beneficiary
remains eligible for these programs.
3. Enhance quality of life
by providing financial support
for activities and services
inadequately covered by public
benefits programs. In addition
to medical, dental and eye care
expenses, appropriate purchases
may include an accessible vehicle,
medical equipment, computer,
gym membership, therapy animals,
music lessons, supplemental
caregiving services, and even
entertainment and travel. The goal
is to increase the beneficiary’s
ability to enjoy life and participate
in their community.
OUR MISSION
To provide skilled and loving home care to families while at the same
time, helping our caregivers improve their standard of living.
Brush up: A key habit
for dental health
StatePoint
Regular dental visits are
important for a healthy smile, but
you can take these steps between
checkups to ensure your dentist
sees your oral health at its best.
1. Brush up on your dental
routine. “A consistent routine of
brushing and cleaning between
your teeth is essential,” said
American Dental Association
(ADA) dentist, Mirissa Price,
D.M.D. “My patients often ask
me, do I really need to floss if I’m
brushing regularly? The answer is
always yes.”
The ADA recommends brushing
twice daily with a soft brush and
fl u o r i d e t o o t h p a s t e t o r e m o v e
cavity-causing plaque and help
prevent harmful conditions like
gum disease. A worn toothbrush
won’t clean as effectively, so
replace the brush every three
or four months, or sooner if the
bristles are frayed.
Yet, even the best toothbrush
can’t fully reach all the spaces
where plaque forms. That’s why the
ADA also recommends cleaning
between your teeth daily using
dental floss, dental picks or water
fl o s s e r s . “ I f y o u fl o s s t h o r o u g h l y,
it doesn’t matter when you do it,”
added Dr. Price. “It might feel
strange at first, but your gums will
get used to the routine quickly if
you make this a daily habit.”
Make sure your toothbrush,
toothpaste and floss each have the
ADA Seal of Acceptance. That’s
how you know a dental product is
safe and effective.
SENIOR ACTIVE LIVING FALL 2024 ESSEX MEDIA GROUP 13
Check out these recommendations for the perfect fall getaway
StatePoint
Anyone who loves fall weather
should make plans to come to
Kentucky. When October and
November roll around in the
Bluegrass State, native Kentuckians
and visitors alike have their eyes
on the tree line, waiting for the first
hints of autumn colors. And while
the anticipation might seem almost
too much to bear, the breathtaking
sight of fall foliage in Kentucky is so
worth the wait.
If the leaves are turning, no matter
where a traveler happens to be in the
Commonwealth, they are in for a
veritable fireworks show of vibrant
fall colors. There are so many ways
to get an amazing view of the foliage,
from nature trails for those who like
hiking to country roads for those who
enjoy nature from the inside of the
car.
The Old Frankfort Pike is a
National Scenic Byway that runs
through Woodford County in central
Kentucky and passes by some of
the most charming and beautiful
landscapes in the entire country. The
pike is 15 miles long, including a
two-mile stretch of road that features
centuries-old limestone fences,
pastures, barns and a tunnel-like oak
tree canopy on either side of the road.
Those lucky enough to drive it during
the fall experience a view that’s truly
special.
Sixty miles southeast of Lexington
is a nature lover’s paradise, the
Daniel Boone National Forest.
Driving any one of the state routes
that passes through the preserve
would satisfy most leaf peepers.
However, for those who insist on
getting out of the car and into the
woods, hiking the trails in and around
Slade will provide all the leaf colors
desired, not to mention jaw-dropping
views of Red River Gorge, Natural
Bridge and Chimney Top Trail.
To find colors and educational
opportunities, head to the Bernheim
Forest and Arboretum, located
just outside Clermont. Not only
does it contain 16,137 acres worth
of arboretum, forest and nature
preserve, but it has nature and
science programming, dozens of folk
art installations and playgrounds for
children of all ages.
Atlantic Hearing Care
expands access to hearing aids
As we move into Fall, many
of us shift our thoughts to cooler
weather, days spent at home with
our loved ones, and the approaching
holiday season. It is often a time of
year for reflection, comradery, and
thankfulness. The team at Atlantic
Hearing Care shares these same
sentiments. This Fall we are taking
time to reflect on our mission of
helping to keep people connected
through better hearing.
We know that our sense of
hearing is vital in keeping us
connected to our friends and family.
Conversations with a neighbor, the
recollection of days past with old
friends, listening to grandchildren
talk about their day at school, a
phone call with a cherished family
member who lives across the
country – hearing helps us stay
connected to all of these experiences
and more.
It is known that the vast majority
of people who experience hearing
loss will need hearing aids to
help treat their hearing loss.
Unfortunately, medical insurance
often does not cover hearing aids,
and as such, leaves them out of
reach for many individuals. Atlantic
Hearing Care believes everyone
deserves to hear their best, nobody
should feel that hearing aids are
unobtainable to them. We are able
to support this mission through
our partnership with our nonprofit
affiliate, The North Shore
Hearing Foundation (NSHF). The
North Shore Hearing Foundation
provides hearing aids to those in
our community who qualify based
on income eligibility. Our team
is motivated to find a solution for
anyone who is hoping to treat their
hearing loss! To find out more
information or to schedule an
appointment, call our office at 781-
