SHAPING THE FUTURE OF ANGLING
The first-ever Angling
Summit, organised
and run by the
European Fishing
Tackle Trade Association
(EFTTA), will present a
packed programme of talks,
discussions and information
designed to shape the future of
our sport.
Details of the day, taking
place immediately before the
giant Angling World Berlin
show on November 28th, have
now been released.
Staged at hub27 on the
Berlin Exhibition Grounds in
Germany, the summit will focus
on areas including legislation
and regulation, sustainable
angling practices, the sport’s
socio-economic impact,
cross-border co-operation and
networking and angling ethics
and social responsibility.
The event will also focus on
the future of angling in Europe,
including a long-term vision
for the sport and how to ensure
its continuity through youth
and upcoming generations of
anglers.
The whole industry is being
invited to attend and EFTTA
promises updates on European
fisheries policy including the
latest on lead, single-use plastic,
packaging and Extended
Producer Responsibility (EPR)
angling along with details
on Marine-Protected Areas
(MPAs).
It will look at threats to
the angling industry, the
environmental impact of
anglers, catch and release
techniques and responsible use
of equipment, including the
latest eco-friendly tackle.
There will be information
on how to establish the true
market value of angling and its
socio-economic impact, with
sessions looking at how to
identify participants, the effect
on tourism and local economies
and industry trends and what
they mean for the wider trade.
A special focus will be on
enhancing trade relations
through cross-border
working, opportunities for
joint initiatives and industry
networking, designed to
facilitate connections between
businesses, regulators and
angling organisations.
Mindful of recent
conversations around animal
welfare, the summit will also
outline how we can ensure
humane treatment of fish and
other aquatic life.
Meanwhile the topic of
social inclusion will consider
how to promote angling as an
inclusive activity accessible to
all, regardless of background or
physical ability along with the
WHY YOUR
BUSINESS NEEDS
AN ANGLING
At the end of November, key
players in the European tackle
trade will be heading to Berlin
for the first-ever Angling Summit,
organised by EFTTA.
While such summits are not
new – the American Sportfishing
Association and the American Fly
Fishing Trade Association both run
such events in the USA – this is the
first one dedicated to the European
industry.
EFTTA – the European Fishing
Tackle Trade Association – has been
working hard over the last year or so
to ensure that more businesses know
about the vital work it does in the
European parliament, safeguarding
our sport.
It wants to share what it has learned
about the threats to our industry
including things like a potential lead
ban, packing regulations, single-use
plastics, and marine protected areas.
EFTTA also has useful information
on how we can better understand the
market and our role within it and how
we can all work together to grow the
sport.
It will have input from a variety
of speakers from around the world
who will share their views on how
they have tackled specific threats to
challenges or have made a significant
impact on angling’s growth or
expansion.
But, more than that, EFTTA
also wants to hear from YOU about
your challenges, ideas and potential
solutions to boost the economy,
encourage more people to pick up a
fishing rod – for whatever reason –
and trade more easily together.
The summit is a unique opportunity
to shape the future of angling in
Europe and ensure it continues to be
present at the table of discussions in
the European parliament.
It’s also a fantastic way to meet your
fellow manufacturers, distributors
and retailers in a relaxed atmosphere
where you can talk, exchange views
and network extensively.
Elsewhere in this publication is a
more detailed rundown of exactly what
is going on in Berlin on November
28th and, doubtless, if you are in the
European trade you may have also
seen a string of communications
from EFTTA or Felix Steinacker’s
Angling World Berlin show, which is
facilitating the event the day before
his huge exhibition.
If you have not yet booked your
ticket then I urge you to do so
immediately.
If we are serious about our sport
and our business then we all need to
be there – for what we can learn, what
we can offer and, just as importantly,
how we can show those who may pose
threats to our future livelihoods that
we mean business.
2024 Angling Summit
sport’s benefits for mental well-being and stress relief.
The EFTTA Angling Summit will provide
the ideal B2B curtain-raiser to Europe’s biggest
consumer fishing show – Angling World Berlin,
running from November 29th to December 1st.
Angling World Berlin project manager, Felix
Steinacker, said: “We are confident that the EFTTA
Angling Summit will offer an excellent platform for
exchange and networking on an international stage.
“With this strategic step, we are not only putting a
stronger focus on the B2B sector and opening a new
B2B segment here in Berlin for our exhibitors and
the international industry, but this also underscores
the growing internationalisation of our fair.”
Ross Honey, Angling Spirit founder and EFTTA
board member, added: “This event will provide
an unparalleled platform for industry leaders to
collaborate, share insights, and drive the future of
fishing tackle and trade. We are excited about the
opportunities this summit presents for fostering
innovation and strengthening our network.”
The conference day is expected to conclude with
a dinner and networking event on the evening of
November 28th.
Tickets are available through the website and are
priced at €200, including the summit and dinner plus
BASS COMPETITION ORGANISERS TAKE DIFFERENT
STANCE ON FORWARD-FACING SONAR
Users of forward-facing
sonar technology have been
left confused after various
bass competition organisers
took different views on their
legality for next year’s events.
The National Professional
Fishing League (NPFL)
was the first to announce it
had banned the use of live
forward-facing sonar (FFS) in
its competitions for 2025.
However, Major League
Fishing (MLF) updated
its 2025 rules to allow
tournament anglers to use
powerful fish-catching tools
including forward-facing and
360-degree sonar technology
“while preserving traditional
fishing techniques enjoyed by
millions of anglers and fans.”
Meanwhile, Bassmaster
has announced it will limit
the use of some technologies
during events such as multiple
engines or a cap on screen
sizes, while the Kayak Bass
Fishing group will only allow
either a motor or FFS but not
both.
The announcements have
led to strong conversations
among many in the US bass
fishing fraternity
NPFL’s Brad Fuller said
its decision was taken “after
many sleepless nights and
countless hours of discussions
that touched every corner of
the fishing industry.”
He added: “I enjoy using
forward-facing sonar in my
personal fishing, and I’m
grateful for what’s it’s taught
us about bass behaviour. It’s
an incredible tool, and no
matter your attitude toward
the technology, it’s undeniable
that it’s impactful for bass
catching.
“Our concern at the NPFL
is whether it’s a proper tool
for competitive bass fishing.
EFTTEX 2025 IN GLOBAL TRADE’S DIARY
Stand bookings are already looking
strong for EFTTEX 2025, with sales
kicking off the moment the exhibitor
portal opened on September 2nd,
with companies around the world
signing up.
Already, EFTTEX 2025 is set to
welcome exhibitors from Australia,
Taiwan, Sweden, Germany, Poland,
India, Italy, Denmark and the UK to
the returning event, which is taking
place at the Brussels Expo from
September 10th to 12th next year.
Although the early bird discount
expired on September 30th, members
of EFTTA (the European Fishing
Tackle Trade Association) can still
enjoy a 10 per cent discount.
Organiser Janet Doyle, who has
also returned to run the show, said:
Every sport has equipment
rules to protect the players
and the integrity of the game.”
The thinking is that NPFL
does not want competitive
bass fishing to become a
technology arms race where
anglers stare at a screen,
targeting pixels and losing
their connection to the fish.
Forward-facing sonar
is changing the ways that
anglers approach competition
and the ways that fans
consume content. It’s also
reducing the methods and
baits that anglers use to
compete.
Brad continued: “Our sport
is too important and too
diverse to allow technology
to shrink it to a handful of
methods and tackle. Robust
competition requires variety,
experience and broad skills.
It must be more than an
expensive video game.
“Stand bookings are now open so
visit efttex.com to view the floorplan
and pricing information.
“Brussels is the perfect place to
host EFTTEX, as it is where our
trade association, EFTTA, does its
valuable lobbying work. Exhibiting
at the trade-supported show is a
must if you want to put your latest
products in front of qualified buyers
or generate new leads while making
valuable connections for the future
and networking with key players in
the industry.”
More show details and
information on official hotel booking
opportunities will be available soon.
info@efttex.com
www.efttex.com
“This decision will be met
with some approval and some
criticism, but we’re confident
that this is the right decision
at the right time for the sport
and for the NPFL.”
BASS, meanwhile, unveiled
2205 Elite Series and
Classic rules which included
what it called “technology
standardisation” – in effect,
allowing just one sonar
transducer mounted to the
bow’s trolling motor, limiting
screen size to a total of 55in
while also only permitting one
electric motor to be used.
BASS’ Chase Anderson
said: “The use of live sonar
at the Elite level has sparked
tremendous debate. Our
technology committee spent
a tremendous amount of
time reviewing post-event
surveys, comparing equipment
on Elite boats to success
rates and considering both
Australian tackle trade
stalwart retires
The Australian tackle
industry has said
farewell to one of
its longest-serving
members, as Phil Jones
retired from Daiwa.
Phil started in the
fishing tackle industry
in 1974 at the age
of 15, working for J
M Turville in North
Melbourne. Turville’s
was regarded as one
of the premier tackle
stores in Victoria at
the time.
In 1985, Phil moved
into the wholesale
side of the industry,
joining Daiwa Australia’s Victorian office
as the region’s sales representative, at a
time when the company also had a golf
division.
After 11 years, he left Daiwa to
join Allan Ball agencies, representing
Shakespeare, Blades football boots and
other sporting brands, before Shakespeare
asked him to join them as an employee,
servicing Victoria.
In 2000, Phil
returned to Daiwa,
where he has proudly
represented the brand
ever since, building
deep, long lasting
partnerships and
friendships with his
retailers.
A Daiwa Australia
spokesman said:
“Incredibly, Phil has
served this industry
with passion and
dedication for
50 years, and his
combined tenure at
Daiwa, spanning a
period of 35 years, has made a massive
contribution to the growth and success of
our brand.
“As he embarks on this well-deserved
new chapter, everyone at Daiwa wishes
Phil a wonderful retirement filled with
happiness and sprinkles on his ice cream.
We hope he can relax, enjoy the time with
his family, and ‘Feel Alive’.”
Major League Fishing
limited to two forwardfacing
or 360-degree
combination while also
announcing a limit on
Anglers will also have
to declare their use of
technologies on the 2025
Bass Pro Tour and be
limited to using forwardfacing
and 360-degree
sonar for only one of three
periods each day.
MLF president and
CEO, Boyd Duckett,
explained: “Forward-facing
sonar is the most effective
bass-fishing technology
that I’ve seen introduced in
my lifetime.
“It’s a powerful tool that
provides an opportunity
to access and catch fish
that we’ve never been
able to efficiently target
before. However, its
effectiveness is leading to
a more uniform approach
in tournaments. For the
sport to remain engaging
to fans, participants or
anglers can still compete
using a diverse range of
ITALIAN FISHING
AND OUTDOOR EVENT
LANDS IN RIMINI
The giant international fishing, boating and outdoor show, Pescare,
continues to evolve and expand and, for 2025, has announced a
new location in Rimini and a second event in Naples a month later.
The Italian Exhibition Group’s
show will assemble the sport
fishing, boating and outdoor
community in the halls of
Rimini Expo Centre from
February 7th to 9th, 2025 followed by
the Naples event in March.
The move will allow IEG to expand
its exhibition spaces and reference
sectors while placing greater focus on sea
fishing (alongside inland water fishing,
which is still a core sector) and water
sports in general.
Moving the international sport
fishing, boating and outdoor activities
exhibition to Rimini is not only a
geographical change, but also a chance
to further enrich the event with more
brands and initiatives related to sea
fishing and boating.
New ideas include the casting pool
structures within Rimini Expo Centre
as demo areas for casting events and
the possibility of organising a real ‘Off
Show’ with sea trials, thanks to the
involvement of Club Nautico Rimini
(the Rimini Nautical Club).
Meanwhile, there will also be a string
of training sessions – including activities
to introduce children and those with
special needs to fishing and boating
– and a focus on fishing organised in
collaboration with important scientific
and university bodies in the field of
environmental protection, which has
always been a feature of Pescare Show.
Organised by IEG in partnership with
FIPSAS (Italian Federation of Sport
Fishing and Underwater Activities),
12 WWW.TACKLETRADEWORLD.COM
which will be included in the
calendar of conferences, in-depth
events and educational activities,
and with the patronage of Assonat
(National Association of Docks and
Marinas), Pescare is Italy’s leading
trade show and reference event
for the sport fishing and boating
community.
Moreover, with the 2025 edition,
the event’s internationalisation
development will be endorsed
by associations and stakeholders
from all over Europe thanks to
partnerships with the European
Fly Fishing Association (EFFA),
Tackle Trade World and Inside
Fishing, and the renewal of media
partnerships with H2O magazine
and Italian Fishing TV.
Everything in one place
The event will not only be a
meeting point for all the sport
and recreational fishing sectors
but also for boating, shipbuilding,
electronics and the entire outdoor
activity world in terms of life in the
open air, love and respect for nature
and all activities where water is the
element of reference.
For example, this could be
combining a passion for nature and
outdoor activities such as trekking
and biking with freshwater fishing
using ultralight rods - an activity
that is especially attracting the
younger generation.
Alongside the casting pools
inside the Expo Centre, other areas
organised as part of Pescare Show
will include Aquademo (a giant
aquarium specifically for product
demonstrations and talks by content
creators and pro-staff ), Fly Tying
Experience (dedicated to fly fishing
and attended by the world’s best
artificial fly producers), the “Social
Media Village” to meet influencers
and pro-staff of several companies,
sportsmen and sector experts,
and Content Hub, a talk area
designed for meetings and product
presentations.
During Pescare Show, the highspeed
railway station inside Rimini
Expo Centre will ensure maximum
accessibility to enthusiasts and
companies.
Following the Rimini edition,
Pescare Show 2025 will move
to Naples as part of the Mostra
d’Oltremare in March.
livingston lures
The evolution
of sound technology
in lures
Livingston Lures’ EBS (Electronic Baitfish Sound) Technology has been around for
more than a decade. How did it come about and what is on the horizon?
Back in 2012, visitors to
the giant ICAST trade
show got their first taste
of a new technology
from US-based Livingston
Lures, called Electronic Baitfish
Sound.
It was introduced in eight
body styles – standard lipless,
shallow square bills, deep divers
and topwater lures – and drew
praise from across the show
floor.
Indeed, Livingston Lures’
Erick Arnoldson revealed:
“Our EBS original sound was
unveiled to the world at ICAST
2012 with huge success. I
recall the president of Rapala
congratulating us on our
technology at the time.”
The following year the
brand became a supporting
sponsor of the Bassmaster
Tournament Trail. Realising it
needed a “dog in the fight”, it
set about securing professional
anglers to fly the flag for its
groundbreaking lures.
Erick recalled: “Our search
led it to Oklahoma’s Grand
Lake where Randy Howell
and Brent Chapman were at a
restaurant while practicing for
an Elite event. We hired them
on the spot over a cup or two of
hot chocolate.”
These were swiftly followed
by Jeff Kriet, Jacob Powroznik,
Hank Cherry and Andy
Morgan while that same year
also saw sponsorship for the
FLW Tour and the American
Bass Anglers Trail.
Moving forward
With pro staff on board,
Livingston Lures began
designing and developing a
wider range with Japanese style
cranks and colours suggested by
the team.
The Team Livingston
MultiTouch was born, featuring
stylish baits including the
new EBS MultiTouch. which
allowed you to scroll through
three different sounds (EBS
OG, shad and craw) and a
silent mode for high-pressure
fisheries
Even back then, Team
Livingston’s trophy case was
growing fast with two Rookie
of the Year awards from
Bassmaster, back-to-back
Angler of the Year at FLW,
Bassmaster All-Star champion,
a Bassmaster Open Win title,
and the Super Bowl of fishing:
the Bassmaster Classic Trophy.
In 2014, the vision and hard
work paid off as Randy Howell
came from behind to win the
Bassmaster Classic with his
newly designed prototype
which was hand-glued. He
remembered his Howeller
DMCP was on the boat in
the Guntersville Craw colour
with EBS Crawfish sound and
proceeded to catch fish after
fish for the win, as it held up
well to the pressure.
In from the cold
By 2016, the company was
ready to tackle the coldwater
market, namely walleye,
musky, pike and ice fishing.
Mark Zona introduced it to
musky guru Pete Maina and
designer Steve Herbeck and it
began designing, testing and
launching 15 models. Today,
Livingston Lures are a musthave
in any tackle box.
The company also moved into
the commercial world of crab
and lobster fishing, developing
a unit that would go inside
traps to attract crustaceans with
its EBS Sound Technology.
It partnered with Capt Wild
Bill from the famous TV series
The Deadliest Catch to test
the theory that sound would
attract crabs. After a a couple
of seasons, the technology
accounted for a 20 per cent
increase in catches with the
King Crab Callers.
It is currently working with
the Department of Agriculture
& Fisheries in Canada to use its
Lobster Callers as an alternative
baiting method to help in the
restoration of live bait depletion
in oceans while aving fishermen
exorbitant costs for dead bait
and increasing their catch by up
to 30 per cent.
As if that wasn’t enough, the
Livingston Lures team is also
busy testing sounds designed to
repel sharks and other predators
affecting clam farm across the
world.
With so much already going
on, not to mention a tradition
of innovation, one can only
wonder where the Livingston
Lures EBS Technology journey
is headed next.
FLY TYING
Fly anglers rely on artificial flies to catch their quarry and,
while many will buy them straight from the shop, a good
percentage love to tie their own, affording the smart supplier
or retailer with a lucrative market for materials and tools.
18 WWW.TACKLETRADEWORLD.COM
FLY TYING
Fly tying – the traditional craft
and an essential aspect of the
sport of fly fishing for many –
is all about creating artificial
flies that mimic the appearance
of natural insects, baitfish, or other prey.
These flies are used to attract fish,
and the art of tying them is a blend
of creativity, skill and knowledge of
aquatic life.
The process involves binding various
material – including feathers, fur, thread
and a wide range of synthetic elements,
not to mention eyes and small weights
– onto a hook to create patterns that
resemble specific prey species, making
it a fascinating intersection of art and
function.
History and evolution
The origins of fly tying can be traced
back to ancient civilizations, with some
of the earliest records dating back to
Roman times.
However, the modern form of fly
tying developed in Europe, particularly
in England and Scotland, during the
18th and 19th centuries.
Initially, fly patterns were simple
and functional, using natural materials
readily available to anglers, such as bird
feathers and animal hair.
However, over time, as fly fishing
evolved, so did the intricacy and variety
of flies, reflecting the diverse aquatic
ecosystems they were designed to
mimic.
The sport and craft of fly tying
reached new heights in the 20th
century, with innovations in both
materials and techniques.
Synthetics like plastic, foam and
rubber provided new textures and
buoyancies, expanding the types of
flies that could be tied. Today, fly
tying is both a hobby and an industry,
with enthusiasts worldwide crafting
flies for personal use, competition and
commercial purposes.
Materials and tools
Fly tying requires a range of specialised
tools and materials. A fly tying vise is the
centrepiece, holding the hook securely
in place while the tyer works around it,
adding the required materials.
Scissors, bobbins, hackle pliers, and
bodkins are essential tools, each serving
a specific purpose, from cutting materials
to applying precise details.
The materials used in fly tying are
diverse, including natural elements like
feathers from roosters, pheasants, and
peacocks, along with fur from animals
like deer, rabbit, and fox.
Synthetic materials have also become
popular, offering a wider variety of
colours and textures. Thread, wire and
beads add weight, colour and movement
to flies, further enhancing their ability to
attract fish.
Fly type
There are three main types of flies: dry
flies, wet flies, and streamers. Dry flies, as
the name suggests, are designed to float
on the water’s surface, imitating adult
insects like mayflies or caddisflies. These
require buoyant materials and precise
construction to mimic the delicate
appearance and behaviour of natural
insects.
Wet flies and nymphs, on the other
hand, are designed to sink below the
water’s surface, imitating larvae, pupae or
drowned insects. These often feature soft
hackles and weighted bodies to achieve
the correct sinking motion.
Streamers, meanwhile, are designed
to resemble small fish, leeches or other
larger prey. These flies are tied with
materials that create movement, such
as marabou feathers and long, flowing
synthetics, making them particularly
effective for predatory fish such as trout,
bass and pike, not to mention countless
saltwater species.
Some streamer flies are also tied,
purely and simply, to attract fish or make
them aggressive and these owe very little
to actual fish imitations and are more
designed simply to provoke a response
from a predatory fish.
Art and science
Fly tying is not just about replicating
the appearance of prey; it’s about
understanding fish behaviour, aquatic
environments and the life cycles of
various insects.
Successful fly tyers possess a keen
eye for detail and an understanding of
how different materials behave in water.
This combination of science and artistry
is what makes fly tying a continuously
evolving craft.
Many fly fishers tie their own flies
to create custom patterns that match
specific fishing conditions or personal
preferences. The ability to craft a fly that
perfectly imitates a local insect hatch or
matches the movement of baitfish can be
the difference between a successful day
on the water and a disappointing one.
Conclusion
Fly tying is an engaging and rewarding
aspect of fly fishing, blending
craftsmanship, creativity and a deep
appreciation for nature. Whether as
a practical skill for catching fish or as
a standalone art form, fly tying offers
endless opportunities for innovation and
expression.
For many anglers, tying their own
flies is a way to connect more deeply
with the sport and the natural world,
making every fishing trip a personal and
meaningful experience.
For the savvy manufacturer and
retailer, the art offers opportunities to
make or sell a wide range of products,
from specialist materials (in a dazzling
array of types and colours) to suitable
hook patterns, glues and beads, not to
mention all the useful tools to craft these
miniature works of art.
THE BAHAMAS
D O I N G B U S I N E S S W I T H . . .
Just 60 miles off the coast of the USA and with a multitude
of islands and highly prized fish species, The Bahamas is an
angler’s paradise and a great place to buy and sell tackle…
Arguably the
sportfishing
capital of the
world, the waters
surrounding The Bahamas
are home to many soughtafter
species including game
fish like marlin and tuna out
at sea along with bonefish,
tarpon and permit on the
flats.
This archipelago of over
700 islands and 2,400 cays,
located in the Atlantic
Ocean, is renowned for its
crystal-clear waters, vibrant
marine life, and world-class
fishing opportunities.
A tropical paradise, it
attracts anglers from around
the globe, drawn by the
promise of thrilling fishing
experiences. Indeed, fishing
in The Bahamas is more
than a recreational activity;
it is deeply embedded in the
culture and economy of the
nation.
Offshore fishing in The
Bahamas is renowned for
its abundance of big game
fish. Species such as blue
marlin, white marlin, sailfish,
tuna, mahi-mahi, and wahoo
thrive in the deep waters
surrounding the islands.
Bimini, Andros, and
the Abaco Islands are
particularly famous for
their deep-sea fishing
opportunities. Anglers often
use trolling methods with
artificial lures and live bait
to attract these powerful
fish. Fishing tournaments,
such as the Bahamas Billfish
Championship, further
highlight the significance
of deep-sea fishing in the
region.
The extensive coral reefs
of The Bahamas provide a
rich habitat for a variety of
species, including snapper,
grouper, barracuda and jacks.
Reef fishing is popular
among both novice and
experienced anglers due to
the relatively calm waters and
the variety of fish available.
This generally often involves
bottom fishing techniques,
using bait such as squid,
shrimp or cut fish.
The Bahamas is widely
regarded as the offering some
of the best and most varied
bonefishing in the world.
Known for their speed and
elusive nature, bonefish are a
highly sought-after species in
the flats of the Out Islands.
Fly fishing is the preferred
method, not just for bonefish
but also tarpon and permit,
requiring specialised rods,
reels and flies.
Islands like Andros,
Exuma, and Long Island
are renowned for their
bonefishing flats, attracting
anglers from around the
world looking for a challenge
in the shallow, clear waters.
The Bahamian tackle trade
The fishing tackle industry
in The Bahamas is an
essential component of the
local culture, supporting
both recreational and
professional activities.
The industry comprises
a range of businesses,
including manufacturers,
retailers, guides and other
service providers, catering to
the diverse needs of anglers.
The industry relies heavily
on both locally produced
and imported equipment.
Local manufacturers
primarily focus on custom
gear tailored to the unique
demands of Bahamian
waters. This includes
specialist rods, reels, line,
and lures or designed for
targeting specific species.
Local tackle shops often
stock custom-made flies
for bonefishing that are not
readily available elsewhere
and you’ll often find guides
selling their own unique
versions, too.
At the same time,
international brands play a
significant role in supplying
high-quality tackle to the
Bahamian market.
Brands like Shimano,
Penn, and Daiwa are
popular among local
anglers, providing reliable
gear for both amateur and
competitive fishing.
The synergy between
local craftsmanship and
international quality ensures
that anglers have access to
a wide range of equipment
suited to their needs.
Fishing tackle shops
are ubiquitous across The
Bahamas, especially in key
fishing destinations like
Nassau, Freeport and Bimini.
These shops offer a broad
selection of fishing gear, bait,
and accessories, catering to
both locals and tourists.
Retailers often provide
valuable insights into the
best equipment for different
types of fishing, as well as
tips on local fishing hotspots.
Some of the most wellknown
tackle shops include
Chub Cay Outfitters, Nassau
Fly Shop, and Tight Lines
Tackle.
These stores not only
sell equipment but also
offer guided fishing trips,
charters and repair services,
enhancing the overall fishing
experience for visitors.
The industry is closely
linked with the charter
boat and guided fishing
service sector. Many charter
companies provide all
necessary fishing gear as part
of their packages, allowing
tourists to fish without the
need to bring their own
equipment.
The industry has seen
a rise in demand for
customised tackle, especially
for bonefishing and deepsea
fishing. Anglers often
seek personalised rods and
lures designed specifically
for the local fish species,
which enhances their chances
of success. This demand
has spurred local craftsmen
and tackle manufacturers
to create bespoke products,
adding a unique touch to the
Bahamian fishing experience.
It has also led to a rise
in top quality outfitters
throughout the world,
dedicated to ensuring those
in pursuit of this quarry are
well catered for with the best
equipment available.
Species and sites
Known as the “grey ghost,”
bonefish can be found in
flat areas covered by as little
as one foot of water, while
their colouration makes them
camouflaged against the sandy
ocean bottom, making them
difficult to spot.
Experienced guides often
look not for the fish but
rather its shadow on the
shallow bottom. Locating
them is no guarantee of
landing one but, if you do,
be prepared a for a string of
surging runs that will test
your skills, your tackle and the
amount of backing you have
on your reel.
Bonefishing is excellent
year-round in The Bahamas
but reaches its peak during
March and April and there
are many lodges with expert
knowledge of the area and its
opportunities; many will even
hook you up with a guide and
skiff.
With over 50 fishing
records, The Bahamas is
considered one of the premier
destinations in the world for
sport fishing.
There’s a reason why Ernest
Hemingway made his way to
his favourite “island in the
stream,” Bimini, just 50 miles
off Florida’s coast, living there
in the 1930s aboard his boat
trolling the offshore waters
for huge marlin, tuna and
swordfish.
Many anglers come to this
region just to enjoy fishing
near the reefs and mangroves
and calm waters and hard
sand flats are perfect for
inshore fishing.
The warm, clear waters
create the perfect setting
for fly fishing, the preferred
method for catching bonefish.
Tarpon are among the
largest of the shallow-water
fish and can weigh up to
60lb. Long and slender with
a silvery hue, these are a
sought-after game fish in
many parts of the world.
Coral reefs are home to
even more challenging permit
while other inshore species,
albeit often targeted by more
conventional fishing, include
barracuda, snapper and
grouper
Deep-sea fishing is
incredibly popular here as the
islands lie at the edge of the
Gulf Stream. Tour companies
offering deep and sport
fishing adventures to some
of the best fishing spots on
the islands, targeting sailfish,
swordfish and marlin.
In fact, the blue marlin
is the national fish of The
Bahamas and there’s no
better place to target these
enormous game fish than the
warm, aquamarine waters
surrounding Grand Bahama
and New Providence.
Other deep-sea species to
try for include yellowfin and
blackfin tuna, dorado – also
known as mahi-mahi or
dolphin – and wahoo, also
known as kingfish.
Protecting the environment
Given the importance and
fragility of the environment in
The Bahamas, it is perhaps no
surprise that environmental
considerations and
sustainability are increasingly
becoming a focus within the
trade.
With growing awareness
of the need to protect
marine ecosystems, many
local businesses are adopting
eco-friendly practices. This
includes the production
of tackle that minimises
environmental impact, such
as biodegradable lures, leadfree
weights and non-plastic
packaging. Additionally,
many companies are involved
in initiatives to promote
catch-and-release practices,
especially for vulnerable
species like marlin and
bonefish.
Challenges ahead
Despite its vibrant nature,
the Bahamian fishing
tackle industry faces several
challenges, with one of the
most important being changes
in the climate.
On September 1st, 2018,
Hurricane Dorian made
landfall over Abaco and then
moved onto Grand Bahama,
bringing with it the region’s
strongest recorded winds at a
sustained 180mph-plus.
It killed at least 74 people
and left another 280+
unaccounted for, while causing
an estimated $3.4 billion of
damage and wiping out almost
every home on some islands,
either through the high winds
or huge storm surges.
Ongoing environmental
threats include coral bleaching,
habitat destruction, and the
decline of fish populations, all
of which directly impact the
demand for fishing tackle and
related services.
The industry must adapt by
promoting sustainable fishing
practices and supporting
conservation efforts to ensure
the long-term viability of the
marine environment.
The import-dependent
nature of the industry means
that disruptions in global
supply chains can affect the
availability of key products.
High import duties and
shipping costs also contribute
to the high prices of tackle,
which can deter local anglers
from purchasing the latest
gear.
Meanwhile, the rise
of online shopping has
introduced competition
from international retailers
who often offer lower prices
and a wider selection of
products. Local tackle shops
must emphasise personalised
service, local knowledge and
unique products to maintain a
competitive edge.
Looking to the future
Despite the threat of
destructive hurricanes, the
future of the fishing tackle
industry in The Bahamas
looks promising, with growing
interest in sustainable fishing
practices and continued
innovation in tackle design.
The development of
eco-friendly gear and the
promotion of responsible
fishing will be key to the
industry’s success.
Moreover, expanding the
reach of Bahamian-made
fishing tackle to international
markets could present new
opportunities for growth.
In addition, the continued
popularity of fishing tourism,
supported by world-renowned
tournaments and targeted
marketing efforts, will drive
demand for high-quality tackle
and related services.
Investment in technology,
such as apps that provide
real-time fishing conditions
and digital guides, could
further enhance the experience
for anglers and support the
industry.
While challenges exist,
the industry’s adaptability
and commitment to quality
and sustainability will ensure
that The Bahamas remains
a top destination for fishing
enthusiasts – and the tackle
trade – worldwide.
BRANDS GALORE
AT AFTA
TRADE SHOW
Brands large and small were out in the force at the Australian
Fishing Trade Association’s annual show earlier this year.
The Gold Coast Convention
and Exhibition Centre once
again played host to the event,
which attracted hundreds
of brands from across the
continent for two days of trade and an
additional public day of fishing tackle
showcasing, networking and awards.
Demand for floor space has been
so great that stands had actually
sold out months in advance and it
didn’t disappoint over the show days
themselves.
Alongside new products, business
meetings and brand ambassadors, the
event was host to AFTA’s annual general
meeting, happy hour plus the biggest
AFTA gala dinner and awards night ever
seen, with 475 people attending for four
hours of drinks and socialising.
AFTA president Michael Starkey
said: “The support from the Victorian
Government and Brandscope for
the dinner was fantastic [while] the
incredible sponsorship from the
Queensland Government enabled AFTA
to offer free entry to all members of the
public.
“Before we opened, the lines were
out the door and around the building.
There’s already plenty of talk for the
2025 show; if you missed it in 2024,
start planning now to ensure you don’t
do that again!”
In all, there were 169 stores who
visited the show – many of whom
attended for both trade days – not to
mention, on the public day, the centre
welcomed 3,421 anglers and families.
AFTA independent chair, the Hon
Bob Baldwin, added: “The AFTA Tackle
Show and the Public Day both achieved
28 WWW.TACKLETRADEWORLD.COM
emarkable success. We welcomed numerous
first-time exhibitors; the event rejuvenated the
energy on the floor for retailers and featured
the unveiling of the latest global fishing
equipment.
“The Tackle Show has always been backed by
the solid and consistent participation of major
brands who exhibit yearly.
Thanks to the sponsorship from the
Queensland Government ($35k) and a launch
by Minister Mark Furner, the Public Day saw a
33 per cent increase in registrations.
Among the 6,574 registered attendees,
4,853 were adults; notably, for our industry’s
sustainability, 1,721 were children under 15.
“In addition, the Tackle Show served as a
platform to sponsor and welcome State Peak
Bodies, enhancing recognition of the diverse
roles played by AFTA and these organisations.”
He revealed that representatives from all
existing Peak Bodies, including TARFISH,
Recfishwest, AFANT, VRFish, RecFish SA and
ARFF were present.
Bob added: “Following Minister Furner’s
initial discussions regarding their formation, we
anticipate that next year’s show might also host
RecfishNSW and potentially RecfishQLD.
“The state peak bodies are not in
competition with AFTA; we complement each
other. AFTA represents the business side of
recreational fishing through its membership,
and the peak bodies directly represent
recreational fishers.
“The AFTA AGM saw good attendance,
with no need for ballots for positions since
the two available roles were secured without
opposition. We congratulate Steve Morgan
(media) and Jarrod Day (retail) for their reelection
and ongoing dedication to AFTA.”
MARKETING
HUNTER MEDIA
BOOSTING YOUR
CREATIVE MARKETING
Creativity in marketing is the art of blending imaginative ideas with
strategic communication to capture attention, evoke emotions and drive
consumer action. How do you go about it?
Creative marketing
involves breaking
conventional moulds
to develop unique,
engaging, and memorable
campaigns that stand out in a
crowded marketplace.
In an era where consumers
are constantly bombarded with
information, creative marketing
is not just a luxury but a
necessity for brands striving
to differentiate themselves and
connect with their audiences
on a deeper level.
Telling the story
At its core, creativity in
marketing is about storytelling;
crafting narratives that
resonate with people, inspire
them, and persuade them to
take action.
Great marketing tells a
story that not only showcases
a product’s features but also
aligns with the values, desires
and emotions of its target
audience.
This can take many forms,
from a clever social media post
to a viral video, a thoughtprovoking
advertisement or
an experiential campaign that
invites consumers to interact
with the brand in new and
exciting ways.
Creativity enables marketers
to transform ordinary products
into extraordinary experiences.
Apple, for example,
doesn’t just sell phones or
computers; it sells a lifestyle
centred on innovation, design
and individuality. Through
creative marketing, Apple has
established a strong emotional
connection with its audience,
often portraying its products as
tools for personal expression.
The “Think Different”
campaign is a testament to
how a simple but powerful
message can elevate a brand’s
image, making it more than
just a product but a cultural
icon.
Changing the narrative
One of the most important
aspects of creative marketing
is its ability to disrupt. In a
world where consumers often
tune out repetitive or mundane
advertisements, creative
marketing grabs attention by
defying expectations.
Old Spice’s “The Man
Your Man Could Smell Like”
campaign turned a declining
brand into a social media
sensation almost overnight.
By using humour, unexpected
scenarios and a charismatic
spokesperson, Old Spice
reinvented its image and
appealed to a new generation
of consumers.
Creativity also plays a crucial
role in problem-solving within
marketing. When faced with
challenges such as changing
consumer behaviour, market
saturation or limited budgets,
creative thinking can lead
to innovative solutions that
traditional methods might
overlook.
Guerrilla marketing tactics,
for instance, leverage creativity
to make a big impact with
minimal investment. These
unconventional strategies often
surprise and delight audiences,
creating buzz and engagement
without the hefty price tag of
traditional advertising.
Customer appeal
Emotional appeal is a powerful
tool because it taps into the
human side of consumer
behaviour. Campaigns that
evoke happiness, nostalgia,
fear, or empathy are more
likely to be remembered and
shared.
Coca-Cola’s “share”
campaign personalised the
brand experience by printing
names on bottles, encouraging
customers to find their name
or that of a friend. This
simple act created a sense
of connection and sparked
millions of social media shares
worldwide.
In the digital age, datadriven
insights and creativity
must work hand in hand.
While data provides valuable
information about consumer
preferences, creativity turns
that data into engaging
content.
Ultimately, creativity in
marketing is about daring
to be different. It requires
a willingness to take risks,
challenge norms, and
experiment with new ideas.
When executed well, creative
marketing not only captures
attention but also builds brand
loyalty, fosters emotional
connections, and drives longterm
success.
A GROUNDBREAKING SERIES OF GUIDES AND TOPS,
TONY ENGINEERING, PATENT PENDING!
TONY HUANG
PACBAY MINIMA - X offers an unparalleled level of durability, solving the problems commonly associated with inner rings
popping out or getting crushed. Through extensive reform and innovation, PACBAY MINIMA - X is constructed using highstrength
, one-piece stainless steel. Both the guides and tops utilize mirror polishing, multi-layer Hard Chrome plating, and
Titanium plating processes, resulting in corrosion resistance, low friction, and high thermal conductivity. As a result , the friction
force during long-distance casting or retrieving is significantly reduced.
If you’ve ever experienced the nightmare of losing or breaking your inner ring while battling a tough fish, you’ll appreciate the superiority of PACBAY
MINIMA - X. Currently, we offer sizes ranging from #05 to #20, with plans to expand up to #50. More sizes and models will be available soon. We believe
these guides are ideal for lure anglers, particularly carp anglers who often face issues with the #50 stripper guide getting damaged during transportation.
With PACBAY MINIMA - X, this problem has been entirely eliminated.
In summary, PACBAY MINIMA - X guides and tops are renowned for their exceptional durability and ability to withstand heavy use and harsh conditions.
This innovation in the fishing world, through the abandonment of ceramic and stainless-steel rings, allows fishermen to bid farewell to the nightmares of
ring breakages, crushing, and detachment.
DIY FISHING BOATS IN TAIWAN, CHINA
A small boat is the Penghu people's sea suitcase.
The first time I noticed this white boat was when
someone was fishing on the "khoo" (that-khoo)
along the coast at low tide. After careful observation,
I also found that each one was fishing. The shapes of
the boats seem to be slightly different, and they are
all personal pieces of furniture (ke-si).
In Penghu, the boat-shaped swimming ring is
commonly known as "moo-lí-lóng" in Taiwanese
(Chinese transliteration: Moulilong). It is made
of foam and is handmade. The size and shape of
the hull will be designed according to the usage
situation. shape.
"Kick hoop" is one of the most common uses. Fishermen ride on it for fishing
and use fins to kick the water to move underwater. Another use is to tie it around
the waist to facilitate diving to collect fish products, such as sea urchins. , snails,
shellfish, etc., or it can also come in handy when walking sea vegetables in winter.
Even building stone bridges requires the use of "moo-lí-lóng". When he first
learned to build stone bridges, there was a shortage of stones on site. Master Kun
said that he should use the buoyancy of sea water to transport stones at high tide.
I know that it turns out that "moo-lí-lóng" can also be transformed into a
platform vehicle that can carry a large amount of heavy objects. I was also lucky
enough to participate in the production of "moo-lí-lóng" at that time. I saw that
Master Kun was very particular about the size and structure. The whole process
was like building a ship. Same.
I never thought that building a stone boat would allow me to own a "boat". If I
can't afford a real yacht, I might as well build one myself!
POPULAR WILD FISHING GEAR IN TAIWAN
I am from Kaohsiung, Taiwan, and I would like to share with you that I went to play crucian carp in Yehu today. I
took pictures of the catch and released it immediately. At the beginning of this year, I used shell stickers and cobra skin
to make a jade ring, and I also had a Shimano wind cutter 13.5 inches that I ordered for a customer. After it arrived,
the customer said he didn’t want it anymore, so I had to keep it for myself.
It’s been a while since I went out to fish for crucian carp. Yesterday I took a sickle and a shovel to the old wild pond
to clear weeds and weed a comfortable spot yesterday.
Today, I took out the Tamaki Suifengiri 13.5 and opened it. After throwing the bait a few times, the white stripes on
the surface and the small Luo Fei under the water were making a lot of noise by baiting them. It was not easy to catch
crucian carp. I only caught 12 after playing for a long time. Only crucian carp, plus 2 larger tilapias, were taken back
after taking pictures.
2024 TAIWAN FISHING TACKLE EXPO GRAND
OPENING!
On September 13, 2024, the Taiwan Fishing Tackle Expo
grandly opened in Taipei. This three-day exhibition,
from September 13 (Friday) to September 15 (Sunday),
was open from 10 am to 6 pm every day, attracting
countless fishing enthusiasts to visit.
At this expo, Shimano, as a mainstream brand in the
Japanese fishing tackle industry, although the number
of products on display was not large, new products such
as 24VANFORD and 24UNIFIX still attracted a lot of
attention. The texture of the new ADRENA is even closer
to high-end models, making people love it.
Daiwa still maintained a high standard of display this
year, with a complete display of Bass series and lure
fishing products, and its own modification brand SLP
WORKS also brought a lot of new products. New
products such as 24STEEZ dual-axis and STEEZ RC and
HEARTLAND were unveiled one by one, giving anglers
a feast for the eyes.
As the leader of fishing tackle stores in Taiwan, Yutaku
Enterprise exhibited several brands it represents,
including EG, JACKALL, OSP, DUO, MEGABASS,
etc. EG's Kenta Onishi also visited the site, adding a lot
of color to the exhibition. The product design and style
exhibited by WEFOX this time are very attentive, and it
actively contacts Japanese brands to enhance its product
line.
As the general agent of Abu Garcia and Pure Fishing's brands
in Taiwan, Hengda Enterprise exhibited a variety of products,
including the latest ROXANI BC/SP reels and Salty Stage
series. Wave Off Taiwan focuses on promoting fishing culture.
The clothing products exhibited this time are not only suitable
for fishing wear, but also very suitable for daily casual wear.
Okuma Baoxiong Fishing Tackle exhibited the new version of
the HAKAI series and the Outdoor style SOLDIER rod and
reel combination series, which are worth seeing.
Keelung City Government also participated in the exhibition
to promote Keelung Island fishing grounds and sea fishing
environment. There were also many interesting activities on site
to interact with anglers.
This expo not only showcased the latest fishing tackle products,
but also a grand event for fishing enthusiasts to communicate
and share.
