A LETTER FROM OUR HOS
A Letter from our HOS
October 2024
Inspiration is synonymous with creativity, ingenuity, artistry, and imagination. This rings true
when I reflect on my experiences at Saint Andrew’s Episcopal School.
To inspire is to ignite a spark of hope, motivation, and possibility. It creates a ripple effect that
can profoundly touch lives and transcend simple words or actions. I have said many times that
our community and our wholeheartedness constantly inspire me in every way imaginable.
I see firsthand the indelible imprint that our teaching and learning environment has on our
students and each other. This permeates to the greater community of parents and caregivers.
Every day I come to school, I observe inspiration in its purest form and leave feeling
exhilarated. Our master teachers bring out the best in our students. They inspire them by the
example of being inspiring themselves. I see how they pour their expertise and knowledge
into these young minds, preparing them for more. They nurture a collective spirit of possibility
and excitement.
As a result, our students are actively engaged in their coursework, ask probing questions, and
participate vigorously in class discussions and activities. As they share what they are learning
with others, we, too, are touched by the spirit of inspiration.
We continue expanding Saint Andrew’s overall experience for our community members.
This is thoughtfully planned with our school’s mission to offer an enriched curriculum within
the tradition and values of the Episcopal Church and the children’s needs at the forefront of
our minds. We are all inspired by our calling to educate the whole student, developing each
student’s intellectual, spiritual, physical, and social capacities as fully as possible.
I am excited about the next leg of our journey together. Saint Andrew’s is poised to do more
great things and impact our community for years to come.
Warmly,
Khadija A. Fredericks
Head of School
Our school is inspiring in other ways. We have been fortunate to have continued growth in
several areas. Our attendance at Open Houses is as strong as ever, and our school enrollment
is outstanding. Saint Andrew’s diversity is also growing. Our faculty is now 33% people of
color, and our student population is over 70%.
Over the past few years, we have had several groundbreaking initiatives. In Lower School we
have a dedicated art and physical education teacher. We have also added a new reading and
writing curriculum for our students. An inaugural Girl’s Flag Football Team and Robotics Team
are two of the most exciting. We have grown our offerings in other areas, such as new clubs
for students like Marketing Club and Minecraft Club. The school debuted a new middle school
schedule that offers longer blocks of time for teaching and exploratory courses. We also
debuted our first-ever Tech Garage this fall.
SAINT ANDREW’S PLACES IN ANAHEIM MUSIC FESTIVAL
Saint Andrew’s
Places in Anaheim
Music Festival
Reflecting on the progress made over the school year, Schaben expressed immense pride. “I am
most proud of our overall progress as an ensemble this year,” he said. Many students were new to the
ensemble experience, and Schaben praised the eighth graders for their involvement and leadership.
He also commended the choir for their dedication, noting, “By the end of the year, we were holding
down three-part harmonies and singing with purpose and passion.”
The most significant improvement, according to Schaben, was the students’ ability to work as a
team. “Ensembles are like team sports; everyone has a role, and every single role matters equally.
The best ensembles are always the most selfless, and this group made massive strides in this regard,”
he explained. The choir also grew closer, forming a tight-knit musical family.
Looking ahead, Schaben is excited about the future of the Saint Andrew’s music program. “I am most
looking forward to continuing to build on this year’s success. I am blessed with some truly talented
and hardworking students here, and I look forward to giving them the best music experience I can,”
he said.
The Anaheim Music Festival allowed our talented students to showcase their dedication, hard work,
and passion for music. These competitions help lay a strong foundation for future success, and we
feel very fortunate to be the only private school in the Bay Area to participate. Our students’ talent
promises a bright future for the music program at Saint Andrew’s.
Our Saint Andrew’s Middle School Ensemble and Choir participated in the Anaheim Music Festival
this May. Their outstanding performances against talented groups from across the U.S., landed our
choir gold and an impressive second place, while our ensemble secured a well-deserved silver.
Preparation for the festival began months in advance. Our Middle School Music Teacher, Joe
Schaben explained, “Ensemble started preparing music specifically for this concert in the middle of
February.” The Contemporary Choir, formed after the holiday break, had been working towards the
trip since January, beginning with vocal technique and multi-part harmony.
Selecting the right pieces for the choir and the ensemble was crucial for the performance. Schaben
considered the ensemble’s instrumentation and strengths. “I look for music highlighting what
we do well as an ensemble. I listen to hours and hours of music until I find three contrasting and
complementary pieces,” he said. He chose songs based on the group’s skill sets for the choir and
intended to have student accompanists from the beginning.
LOS GATOS POET LAUREATE, ONE OF OUR VERY OWN
Los Gatos Poet Laureate
One of Our
Very Own
William Butler, our Middle School English
teacher, has been honored as Los Gatos’ new
poet laureate. Mr. Butler is eager to broaden
poetry’s appeal, believing many people
would appreciate it if they experienced it in an
engaging setting. “Many people assume they
don’t like poetry, but if they attended an event
featuring poetry, I believe they would find
something enjoyable,” he remarked.
As a resident of Los Gatos, Mr. Butler plans
to host local poets and authors for readings
and panels at the Los Gatos Library and visit
classrooms to inspire students to explore
creative writing. He aims to continue the
tradition of the annual poetry contest
established by his predecessor. He also seeks
to use his role to introduce poetry to those who
might not usually engage with it.
Mr. Butler, a Mill Valley native, has been
passionate about poetry since high school when he first encountered slam poetry.
This interest continued through his studies at UC Santa Cruz, where he participated in
poetry workshops, organized slam poetry events, and contributed to the school’s literary
magazine.
We are so proud of Mr. Butler for this accomplishment and the work he will do to bring
poetry to our community.
CELEBRATING THE DEDICATION OF OUR DEPARTING EDUCATORS
Celebrating the
Dedication of Our
Parting Educators
At Saint Andrew’s, our community is built on the dedication and passion
of our exceptional faculty. These individuals have devoted their careers
to fostering an environment of learning, growth, and community. As
we bid farewell to some of our esteemed colleagues, we reflect on their
invaluable contributions and lasting impact on our school.
Doug Bullard
P.E. Teacher and Former
Athletic Director
Doug Bullard’s 40-year tenure at Saint Andrew’s, including 17
years as a part-time coach, has been marked by his dedication
to athletics and student development. Starting as a part-time
coach, Doug eventually became the Athletic Director in 2000
and took on the role of P.E. Teacher in 2015.
Laura Lewis
Early Childhood Educator
Laura Lewis has been a beloved Saint Andrew’s community
member for an impressive 30 years. Laura was known for her
enthusiastic energy in the classroom and was always seen
with a smile on her face, teaching hundreds of young students
over the years. Starting her journey with the after-care team
and substitute teaching, Laura’s passion for early childhood
education was clear. She went to school at night to earn her
California Teaching Credential and Master in Education,
resulting in her becoming a lead Pre-K and Kindergarten
teacher extraordinaire.
Laura’s commitment extended beyond the classroom as she
actively participated in numerous committees, including the Sunshine Committee and the Geoffrey Andrew
Ladd Selection Committee. Her role in planning celebrations and selecting award recipients reflected her
dedication to fostering a joyful and supportive community.
Laura’s family has also been a big part of the community, as her children attended Saint Andrew’s for all eleven
years. She said that when looking at preschools, Saint Andrew’s stood out as a school that aligned with her
family values: safety, a kind and caring community, and a strong academic focus. Throughout her children’s
years of school at Saint Andrew’s, she believes that those original priorities continued to be met and are still
being met today!
Some of Laura’s favorite memories are the faculty performances in the annual Variety Shows and the emotional
celebrations during Chapel services, which highlight her deep connection to our Saint Andrew’s family. In
retirement, Laura looks forward to spending more time with her extended family, traveling, and continuing to
support Saint Andrew’s in various ways.
Doug’s involvement in the Safety Committee and coaching
various sports, including Flag Football, Basketball, Volleyball,
and Softball, showcased his commitment to the students’
athletic excellence! His fond memories include working
with colleagues like Roger Adams and Brenda Thornburg
and participating in events such as the Lower School Science Fair and Service Learning Day, saying, “They are
great opportunities to see students shine outside the classroom,” which highlights his passion for community
engagement.
As Doug transitions to a new chapter in Fair Oaks, California, he looks forward to spending more time with his
wife and family while cherishing the bonds he formed at Saint Andrew’s.
CELEBRATING THE DEDICATION OF OUR DEPARTING EDUCATORS
Judy Millerick
Director of Service Learning
and Community Life
The contributions of these educators have shaped
our school and inspired generations of students
and colleagues. We wish them all the best in their
future endeavors
Judy Millerick’s remarkable 30-year journey at
Saint Andrew’s began as a substitute teacher
and quickly evolved into a full-time role.
Judy’s dedication to curriculum development,
community engagement, and leadership on
various committees, including Language Arts,
Math, and Accreditation, has greatly benefited us.
During Judy’s tenure, she taught across multiple
grades, from pre-k to second grade, and
eventually stepped into the role of Lower School
Head. Her contributions to countless events, such as the Teddy Bear Picnic, the Black and White Ball,
and the Science Expo, have enriched the educational experiences of hundreds of students.
In her latest role as the Director of Service Learning and Community Life, Judy has worked to build
a robust Service Learning Program, fostering connections and service-oriented projects among
students. Her work with the Character Recognition Program and the Buddy Program has left a lasting
legacy.
Of all the years Judy spent in our community, she says the most meaningful was her friendship with
us all. Reflecting on all the amazing families and the lasting friendships she has made with those who
have entered our school, she feels honored that our alumni still come back to reminisce about their
days as students with her.
Judy plans to travel in retirement, spend quality time with her family and grandchildren, and remain
connected to the Saint Andrew’s community.
Jenni Peters
Lower School Science
Specialist
Jenni Peters has been integral to Saint Andrew’s
for the past decade. As the first-ever Lower
School Science Teacher, Jenni was pivotal in
designing and building a hands-on science
program tailored to the Next Generation Science
Standards. Her classroom became a place of
discovery and learning for pre-k to fifth-grade
students. Jenni founded the Lower School
Garden Club, leading efforts that resulted
in the school garden being recognized as a
Certified Wildlife Habitat by the National Wildlife
Federation.
Jenni re-imagined the annual Lower School Science Expo, transforming it into a student-centered
event highlighting fifth graders’ scientific achievements through hands-on experiments and
presentations. Her passion for nature and science was shown in every outdoor adventure she shared
with her students, fostering a love for wildlife and the environment.
As she embarks on her next journey, Jenni aims to make a broader impact on environmental
education and climate change initiatives. Her dedication to students and the planet will
undoubtedly lead to significant contributions.
All four devoted educators said they will miss the
students and our community the most. We extend
our wholehearted gratitude to Doug, Jenni, Judy and
Laura for their years of service and for leaving a mark
on Saint Andrew’s.
ROBOTICS
ROBOTICS
The inaugural year of Saint Andrews’
competitive robotics team!
by Zara Fugman, 8th Grader
This is the inaugural year of Saint Andrews’
competitive robotics team! Robotics has, in
recent years, been becoming extremely popular
as an extracurricular activity for middle and
high schoolers. In light of this, as students in
our Robotics Club, which teaches the basics of
engineering and coding, expressed interest in
pursuing higher-level robotics, the school also
decided to form a competitive group. This year,
our robotics team consists of two distinct teams
of five students each and our mentor, Mr. Mata,
as part of the VEX IQ league. We worked together
during our meets, but built separate robots and
compete as individual teams. We attended six
competitions and weekend tournaments, where
we had the opportunity to compete with other
robotics teams in the area.
Each year, VEX releases a game in which teams
build a robot to play. This year, the game “Full
Volume” involved collecting blocks of various
shapes and sizes and distributing them into goals.
We have constantly modified, built, and rebuilt
our robot to keep it updated, whether through
mechanisms completely of our own design or
inspired by other robot designs we noticed.
Robotics has been an amazing experience for
me at Saint Andrew’s. This program taught me to
navigate the design process, address problems
efficiently, and work with a team to achieve
set goals. It’s also helped me develop skills like
leadership, team management, collaboration, and
critical thinking. Most of all, it’s fun! I’ve always
loved science and math, but I’ve never been
interested in playing sports. Because of this, I’ve
missed out on something most kids experience:
the feeling of being a part of a team. In robotics,
we met frequently and worked together to win
a game, like sports, but with no athletic ability
required. It’s allowed me to have that experience
and make many friends along the way!
Next year, we’ll expand our robotics program to
include more students! This year’s small pilot
group was just the beginning. This year, we
learned how robotics works: how to build and
code a robot, how competitions are set up, and the
requirements. Going forward, we aim to apply this
knowledge to improve the experiences of future
teams in their robotics adventures!
GIRLS’ FLAG
FOOTBALL TEAM
We proudly launched our inaugural Girls’ Flag Football team in the spring of 2023,
with a team of determined 5-6th graders, and during this past season in 2024, we
fielded two teams, girls’ 5-6 grade and 7-8 grade; a very exciting opportunity for our
5th through 8th-grade students. Spearheaded by enthusiastic players and dedicated
coaches, this new addition to the school’s athletic program has brought thrilling games
to the field and fostered camaraderie and skill development among its participants.
Addi Cooper, a 6th grader on the team, shares her excitement about joining the squad:
“Flag Football is a game of communication, teamwork, and hard work,” she reflects.
“When my mom asked me if I wanted to play Flag Football, I was so excited. Coach Fred
introduced us to the game and taught us everything from reading the field to executing
plays. I even scored the first touchdown!”
Coach Leydy, who coached the 5th and 6th-grade teams, proudly reflects on the team’s
journey: “I have a passion for sports, especially football, and coaching these girls
has been incredibly rewarding,” she remarks. Throughout the season, I’ve witnessed
remarkable growth and improvement among the girls. They are dedicated and
hardworking, and it’s been a joy to see them enjoy the sport and excel on the field.”
The team’s progress hasn’t gone unnoticed, with their victory of 39 to 8 against Saint
Victor signifying a key achievement. Coach Leydy shares enthusiastically, “It’s moments
like these that highlight the girls’ determination and the strides they’ve made since the
beginning of the season.”
With each game and practice session, Saint Andrew’s Episcopal School’s girls’ flag
football team continues to break barriers and pave the way for future generations of
female athletes. Coach Leydy summarizes the team’s spirit: “We have a strong, very
talented group of girls this year, and I am extremely proud to be their coach. The girls
are going to come back next season even stronger. I believe in them!”
RIPPLES OF BLESSING
Ripples of
Blessing
“Some of us will make tiny ripples and others
will send waves crashing, but each one will
change the surface of the water forever.”
~ Robin Dance
Our Service Learning theme for the 2023-2024
school year was “Ripples of Blessings.” Inspired
by Ellie Sommer’s words, “You can never know
the ripple effect you create with one tiny gesture
of kindness,” we aim to give our students
opportunities to impact their community
positively. This year, we continued to focus on
fostering an environment where service, kindness,
and strong character are integral to our mission
and Episcopal identity.
Throughout the year, students engaged in various
service projects and activities designed to instill
and reinforce key character traits, including
respect, responsibility, kindness, gratitude,
cooperation, courage/forgiveness, honesty,
perseverance, creativity/integrity, empathy, and
patience. Students learned the importance of
being accountable for their actions, making good
choices, and being dependable.
Joshua Napier
Joshua consistently demonstrates kindness and a willingness
to help others. Joshua’s thoughtful and caring nature is
evident when assisting parents and teachers with event
decorations, connecting with his little buddy, or sorting and
delivering lost and found items in the rain. He also helped
carry boxes and other items to and from the office, always
offering a helping hand.
Jayna Fletcher
Jayna is a beacon of wonderful character. She volunteered to
keep the classroom organized during a substitute teacher’s
presence, shared her sweater with a friend in need, and
served as a Student Ambassador during our Open Houses.
Her engaging, polite demeanor and exceptional character
shine through her interactions with prospective students and
parents. Jayna also stepped in as an acolyte during Chapel
and helped check in on other students numerous times
throughout the school year.
Ben Nguyen
Ben’s ability to connect with people is remarkable. As a
Student Ambassador, he assisted with a Pre-k Spanish class
during the Open House and consistently performed acts of
kindness, such as cheering up teachers and helping faculty
members without being asked. His honesty is commendable;
when he found a $20 bill on the Plaza, he turned it in to be
returned to its owner. Ben’s strong connection with his little
buddy also highlights his caring nature.
Zara Fugman & Julie Chen
Zara and Julie have been the school leaders serving as the
President and Vice President of the student council. They
assisted the Admissions team, participating as Student
Ambassadors at Open House events. They demonstrated
and explained the robotics project to prospective parents
and students and took on leadership roles to enact new
traditions at the school, such as organizing a buddy event to
celebrate Holi.
A DAY IN THE LIFE
Wholehearted
Pride
By: Anne Newman,
Chief Advancement
Officer
As we prepare for the upcoming
school year, I am filled with a deep
sense of gratitude and pride in
our community’s growth and
diversity. Over the past five years,
I have had the privilege of leading
the admission efforts, resulting
in enrollment growth from 267 to
430 students for the 2024-2025
school year, bringing with them
a rich tapestry of cultures and
experiences. This growth is a testament to the strong reputation our school has
built as a place where academic excellence, character development, spiritual
growth, and social responsibility thrive.
Additionally, under the strong leadership of our Head of School, Khadija
Fredericks, we have seen a diversified Board of Trustees and faculty members
who have enriched our school with their unique backgrounds, perspectives, and
expertise. We take immense pride in being a diverse and inclusive community.
Our Episcopal values of inclusivity, compassion, and respect for all are at the
heart of everything we do, and it is wonderful to see these values reflected in our
vibrant and diverse community.
Our commitment to fostering an environment where every student feels valued
and supported is stronger than ever. Through this diversity, we find strength,
creativity, and a deeper understanding of the world around us. Our commitment
to each individual showcases the respect and value we have for each of our
community members.
Thank you for being a part of this special community and for your ongoing
support and involvement. Your contributions, whether as a student, family
member, faculty, or alumni, are integral to our success. A measure of your impact
is in the growth of our Flexible Tuition program, which now serves 23% (an annual
increase of 10%) of our students for the upcoming year. Take a look at the figures
to the right to see just how far we have come in living our mission. Together, we
are building a school community that we can all be proud of, and we are excited
to see how our community continues to flourish in the year ahead.
CLASS OF
2024
We congratulate the Saint Andrew’s
Class of 2024 on their outstanding
achievements. Our students continue to
receive high praise for their impressive
high school interviews, advanced
academic accomplishments, and
remarkable character.
This year, 86% of our students were
admitted to the Archdiocese of San
Jose Catholic High Schools, and 80%
were accepted into two or more schools
to which they applied. We couldn’t
be prouder of their hard work and
dedication, and we wish them luck next
year in high school!
A Giving
Community
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who
Our community’s dedication was evident throughout
the year in supporting various fundraising initiatives,
including the Annual Fund, Spring Social, and the
belief in the trans-formative power of giving shared by
our parents, grandparents, alumni, alumni parents,
ANNUAL FUND
Annual Fund
The Annual Fund at Saint Andrew’s Episcopal School is vital to our community’s commitment to
excellence. Tuition alone doesn’t cover the total cost of the comprehensive education we offer. The Annual
Fund bridges this gap, providing essential resources that enhance our students’ learning experiences.
It’s more than just a financial contribution; it’s a demonstration of our shared dedication to nurturing the
minds and hearts of our students. Through the collective generosity of parents, grandparents, alumni,
alumni parents, and friends, the Annual Fund empowers us to continue delivering an education that
inspires curiosity, creativity, and a passion for knowledge. Together, we make a difference.
SPRING SOCIAL
Spring Social
The annual Spring Social is a festive evening for parents and faculty, raising funds for Saint Andrew’s
Flexible Tuition Program. This year, co-chairs Taleen Shirikian and Grace Choi planned a phenomenal
event: A Night in Seville, which featured authentic Spanish food, flamenco entertainment, and exciting
live and silent auctions. We owe a massive debt of gratitude to the creativity and efforts of everyone
involved in making the evening a success. Special thanks to our Event Sponsors and all who participated
in the auction and donated by raising their paddles in the Fund-A-Need!
IN MEMORIAM
In Memoriam.
David Cooling
David Cooling, once a headmaster of Saint Andrew’s in the 1970’s, passed
away on December 20, 2023, in Spokane, Washington. Known for his love of
education, spiritual nature, and humorous personality, David was a beloved
friend to many and possessed an insatiable thirst for knowledge.
He leaves behind his wife, Ann Cooling, his daughter, Shannon Troyka, his
son, Ryan Cooling, and his family: his wife Shanon, daughters Teagan and
Payton, and his stepchildren Madysn, Jacob, and Hailey. David’s presence will
be deeply missed by all who knew him, as he touched the lives of many with
his warmth and kindness.
Sylvia Chadwick
We pay tribute to our beloved community member, Sylvia Chadwick. Sylvia
founded our preschool in 1972 and remained in that role for thirty years. We
are honored that she graced us with her presence for many wonderful years
and shared her beautiful, creative spirit with our alumni and faculty.
