If a pancake and a crepe had a love child, it would be a
out, one kid’s melted-cheese-toasted sandwich dream is
dish often lies a relationship: A unique attachment. From
You go, mama!
Meet Cherise van der Vyver, who’s all about hard work, entrepreneurship
and lifting others up. But more than anything, she’s a mom on a mission
… raising her little Miss Mae to take on the world.
Text: ALANICKA LOTRIET. Photographer: ROELIEN MALAN. Venue: STUDIO WORTHIT.
Anyone who’s met Cherise van der
Vyver will tell you she just beams with
love, life and laughter. And exactly
that is what she hopes to pass on to
her daughter, Jenna-Mae. But, she
and her husband, Johan are taking a
slightly different (if you want to call it
that) approach to parenthood.
Around two years ago, they started
teaching Jenna-Mae some financial
and entrepreneurial skills. She was
three. So now, if she wants something,
she’ll be savvy enough to know
how to get it all by herself. Like, for
instance, her horse-riding lessons.
With mommy’s help, she opened up
her own business called Jenna-Mae’s
14 Get It Magazine November 2024
Workshop and started out by making
and selling her own slime to pay for
her horse-riding.
‘Recently she had her eye on a
beautiful hair clip, and I told her
that if she wants it badly enough
- because she already has a zillion
others,’ Cherise chuckles, ‘she needs
to find a way to make money to buy
it. And so, we started making and
selling the prettiest earrings together
… and she was over the moon
when she was finally able to buy her
treasured hair clip as a result of new
skills and hard work.’
Cherise believes that when you
have a skill and some confidence,
you can make money. That’s why
she and her family are giving little
Jenna-Mae a head start on life …
teaching her all the grown-up stuff
she won’t necessarily be learning in
the classroom. Oh, and little Miss Mae
already has a retirement annuity for
when she is older too, so – in her own
words – she doesn’t have to work one
day, just like Ouma.
In their free time, you’ll find this
mommy and daughter duo crafting,
dancing, baking, and enjoying the
outdoors. They also love music
and dancing. But shopping … well,
that’s all Jenna-Mae. Cherise is less
enthusiastic about that one.

But, here’s the twist. Jenna-Mae also
has Type 1 diabetes. It’s not reversible
and it doesn’t get better. For those
who are not doctors or sufferers,
Type 1 diabetes is not purely genetics
and you cannot bring it about with
sweeties. And so, Cherise urges
parents to take their child or loved
one for a simple HbA1c test at any lab,
GP or clinic if they have any concerns.
Jenna-Mae also has a Diabetic Alert
Dog (DAD) named Isla. A qualified,
registered and very well-trained
medical assistant to sense when
Jenna-Mae’s blood sugar drops.
When a type 1 diabetic goes low, it
is very dangerous as they can have
seizures or fall into a coma. Isla is
a superhero in the van der Vyver
household, often detecting lows
long before any device can.
‘It’s so sad because she is often not
allowed in places or treated very
poorly even though legislation
permits these life-changing service
dogs,’ Cherise added.
Luckily, the Krugersdorp community
is getting to know Isla, and people
are becoming more aware of the
incredible role service dogs play …
not just for the blind, but for those
with diabetes or epilepsy, to name
just a few.
Even though it’s not always easy
keeping an eye on a four-year-old
diabetic … it has brought their
family a lot of gratitude over the past
few years. And, it’s never stopped
them from living their best lives,
either. In fact, Cherise is big on not
passing down fears or doubts to her
daughter. She wants Jenna-Mae to
face the world confidently. And, she
leads by example!
She spent years in tourism, then
became a photographer, and now
she’s a financial adviser. She loves
helping people understand their
finances because, let’s face it, many of
us feel overwhelmed by it all. Cherise
can relate. She’s been there, and now
she enjoys giving back and guiding
others through the financial maze.
‘I finally feel like I am where I should
be. So, to everyone out there, it is
never too late to change careers or
study again. Yes, it is harder as you get
older, but don’t give up on finding
your place in this world.’
Her photography business, which she
started a decade ago, has become
more of a hobby these days, but
it still brings her immense joy. She
still loves capturing moments and
editing photos. And if she’s being
honest, she doesn’t think she’ll ever
stop taking photos.
When she’s not spending time with
her family, working or taking pics,
she runs. And she’s taken up some
serious marathons too. Including the
Kaapshehoop Marathon, her most
challenging yet most beloved race.
She recalls one year when she wasn’t
fully prepared, but with the help of
her friend Lelani, she managed to
finish, just two minutes too late to
qualify for the Comrades Marathon.
Tough, but totally worth it.
How does she do it all? Like many
mommies … Cherise often wonders
the same thing.
‘I do believe that God gives me the
time and energy I need to complete
what’s important, and when life gets
overwhelming, I know it’s time to refill
6 Things she wants Mae to know
1. You are good enough.
2. Life isn’t perfect. Nothing is. It’s not supposed to be.
3. Save. Save for now, save for emergencies and save for old age.
4. Take care of your body. You only have one.
5. Trust that little voice in your head.
6. Nothing you do, can change God’s love for you.
3 Ingredient cloud dough recipe
If you like making homemade playdough with your little one, Cherise highly recommends
this recipe. It’s super silky, fluffy and scented … and has a nice stretch,
too. Perfect for school holidays.
You’ll need: ½ cup conditioner of your choice, 1 cup cornstarch and a drop
of colourant.
To make: Mix it together well and you will have fluffy nice smelling playdough in
no time. Enjoy!
Quick and easy, sugar-free low-carb brownies
Perfect for T1 and T2 diabetics!
my own cup before carrying on.’
This is exactly why she founded
Ladies in Business just over two years
ago … a community to empower
other women juggling careers,
motherhood, and everything else. She
wanted to create a safe space to learn,
share, and support each other, and of
course, to pray together, whether it’s
in their business or personal capacity.
So, what’s next for Cherise? Well, for
now, she’s got her hands full juggling
family life, running marathons,
empowering women, and helping
people make sense of their finances
… but she wouldn’t want it any
other way.
She’s on a mission to live fully and
authentically, and her journey is a
reminder that with a bit of hard work,
a lot of love, and a dash of faith, we
can truly shape the life, and children
we want … one step and one day at
a time.
Socks gone wild!
Ever wondered where all your lost socks disappear to? Well, they may just have
been reincarnated as one of Donna Kruger’s famous Sockimals!
Text: ALANICKA LOTRIET. Photographer: ROELIEN MALAN. Venue: STUDIO WORTHIT.
Under the knife of our resident
Socktologist, Donna Kruger gives
socks a fresh lease on life. Stuffed
and stitched into the most delightful
creatures you’ve ever seen. Think
giraffes, piggies, llamas, Sockosauruses
(yes, you read that right), hippos, ellies,
donkeys, bunnies, and … well, you
get the picture. If it’s cute, Donna’s
probably made it.
Oh .. and she doesn’t really use old
mismatched socks from the laundry
vortex. Only brand-new ones that
have never been worn.
For more than a decade, Donna’s
been expressing herself through
socks. The more colourful and wilder
the pattern, the better ... since Donna
herself is, well bold, bright and busy.
Upon completion, every Sockimal
gets a hug from its creator (because
it’s become a ritual) before it’s ready
to head off to its fureva home. So far,
exactly 4157 Sockimals have been
lovingly adopted. (She’s her father’s
daughter, so yes, she keeps track)!
‘The best part is that each one is so
different, even if they start as identical
pairs of socks. I can never ever create
the exact same animal twice, which
speaks to me too. Each of us are
unique masterpieces and not one
person is the same as someone else.’
Socks have been a thread (pun totally
intended) in Donna’s life since she
was little. She remembers making
mud pies and sifting sand through …
you guessed it … socks with her little
sister, Laura. Later, she was knitting
baby jerseys and making dresses for
her niece. Creativity has always been
in her blood, and though her mom
tried to teach her sewing as a little girl,
it didn’t really click until Donna found
her Sockimal calling later in life.
Needless to say, she has always loved
colour, and she’s come to love people
16 Get It Magazine November 2024

just as much. She’s grown into her
uniqueness and celebrates it just like
the full-spectrum rainbow she loves
to create with.
Now, when Donna’s not transforming
socks into animals, she’s consulting
for The Learning Point, an education
exhibition company she used to
run herself. And, she might even
plan the occasional event or party.
Because, apparently, creating magical
moments is in her DNA too.
‘Looking back, I always found
opportunities to be creative. After
passing on the company, I had more
time and so I ventured into event and
party planning, which I absolutely
loved. It gave me the chance to help
people create unforgettable events
and lasting memories to treasure.’
Sockimals only really came into the
picture when she helped her sister,
who was looking for a creative project
to empower women in Zambia at
the time. Donna jumped in, patterns
in hand, and so, unintentionally
discovered her happy place.
Fast forward to today, and Donna
has made 53 different types of
Sockimals. But her everyday lineup
includes around 30 regulars. And
yes, she’s always up for a challenge
if you’re after something specific.
Her favourite? Well, if you twisted
her arm, it would have to be her
mascot, Gracie Giraffe (but don’t
make her choose … it’s like picking a
favourite child).
It comes as no surprise that
Donna can’t go anywhere without
scanning the shelves for socks
(#thesnuggleisreal). Good quality,
well-priced, quirky socks are her
kryptonite, and Dave, her husband,
has developed the world’s patience
while she’s on the hunt. Her friends
know the way to her heart, too …
sock shopping!
Looking ahead, Donna’s excited to
keep growing her sock empire. She’s
dreaming of hosting more Create
Your Own Sockimal workshops and
taking kits to schools for kids to
craft in their Arts and Technology
classes. Eventually, she’d love to teach
someone just as passionate to help
her with the socky magic.
‘My biggest inspiration is God’s
beautiful creation around us. More of
artistry on full display you will not find.
My daughter is also my inspiration.
How she holds fast to her faith, no
matter what life brings on her path,
which encourages me greatly.’
Alongside her husband, Donna is
also deeply involved in I Am Second,
a nonprofit inspiring people to put
Jesus first in their lives. Together, they
lead the Africa division, travelling all
over to share stories of faith and hope.
But when she’s not doing missionary
work, Donna’s happiest spending time
with her family, or just chatting with
friends … barefoot or in socks.
‘In my downtime though, I enjoy quiet
moments with my Bible and jotting
down dreams and promises from
God. My life motto is Let my story bring
You glory, Lord. And, just that is what I’ll
always be aiming for.
‘And if anything’s guaranteed to
make my day, it’s my granddaughter’s
infectious smile. Or, naturally, a fun
pair of socks.’
One thing’s for sure. Whether it’s faith,
friends, family, work or Sockimals,
Donna’s all in. She’s got no space
for half-heartedness. Just full-blown
passion for everything she sets her
heart and hands to. So, next time
you’re faced with an odd sock, just
think of Donna and her wonderful
world of socky creatures. Because
around her, even the simplest
things … like a pair of socks …
become extraordinary.
What would Summer be without the juicy lushness of peaches, plums and nectarines?
For the Summer of 2024, fab recipe
developers and food stylists Emma Nkunzana
and Masego Mbonyana have teamed up
with Juicy Delicious to create a catalogue of
South African-inspired dishes. Whether you
are hosting beach picnics or swish parties,
braaiing in your backyard or cooking up a
three-course feast, stone fruit add a hit of
freshness that will wow your guests.
Tips for making the most of the season
Masego and Emma’s tips to make the most
of the South African stone fruit season
• For easy peeling of poached nectarines,
submerge cooked nectarines into an ice
bath for two to four minutes.
• Grill halved peaches or nectarines until
caramelised, then serve them as a side dish
for braaied meats. They are just as fantastic
as an easy dessert, drizzled with honey,
sprinkled with cinnamon and serve with a
dollop of vanilla ice cream.
• Make a glaze using pureed peaches or
nectarines, adding a touch of brown sugar,
balsamic vinegar, and mustard. Brush it over
your roast meats during the final stages
of cooking for a sweet, tangy finish that
balances savoury flavours.
• Create a festive stone fruit salsa by
combining diced plums, peaches, or
nectarines with chopped red onion, fresh
coriander, and a squeeze of lime. This fresh
and zesty salsa is perfect as a topping for
grilled chicken, braaied fish, or even over
nachos for a summer twist.
• If you want a tarter flavour from your
stone fruit, choose slightly under ripe
ones. They also hold their shape well for a
stunning presentation.
• Add thinly sliced nectarines or plums
into a summer salad with mixed greens,
toasted nuts, and crumbled blue cheese.
The combination of sweet, juicy fruit and
the salty richness of the cheese creates a
beautiful balance of flavours.
Curry marinated grilled peaches and blueberry salad
Masego’s Curry marinated grilled peaches and blueberry salad is an artful
blend of spices and citrus with the juiciness of peaches and blueberries
topped with the smooth saltiness of Danish feta cheese. Serves 4 to 6
You’ll need: 4 peaches, cored and cut in eighths, 60ml olive oil, 1 tsp curry
powder, ½ tsp orange zest, 125g blueberries, 80g wild rocket, 100g pecan
nuts, lightly roasted, 100g Danish feta
Honey dressing: 60ml honey, 60ml olive oil, 1 Tbsp balsamic vinegar,
1 lemon, zest and juice, 10g Italian parsley, finely chopped, salt and
pepper to taste
To make: In a mixing bowl, combine prepared peaches with curry powder,
olive oil, orange zest and a pinch of salt. Combine well and refrigerate for
20 minutes. Heat a griddle pan over high heat place, peaches on the pan
and grill on each side until you have charred marks and set aside to cool.
Reserve the curry marinade for the dressing.
For the honey dressing, combine the reserved curry marinade with honey,
Indoor plant of the month
Venus flytrap is a carnivorous little
plant that sounds creepy enough for
Halloween hi-jinks but is actually quite
practical and beautiful in a bizarre
kind of way. The leaves act as fly traps,
with the inner part of the leaf looking
like a pink mouth surrounded by
spiny, sharp teeth. Along comes a fly
and the leaf snaps shut.
When grown indoors the Venus
flytrap needs at least six hours of sun,
so it will thrive in a sunny room, on a
windowsill or on the patio. Place the
plant in a 2 to 4cm deep saucer filled
with water. To prevent it from rotting,
let the tray dry out for a short period
every week but never let the plant
dry out completely as this will kill it.
There is no need to fertilise because
the flies provide all the nutrients the
plant needs.
In Winter the plant goes dormant
and dies down. Move it to a cool area
so that it stays dormant. Water less,
keeping the soil lightly moist. Come
Summer, move it back into the sun.
Veggie of the month
Squash Bennings Green is a quick and easy
to grow heirloom patty pan squash, that is regarded as
one of the tastiest of the Summer squash varieties -
with a nutty, slightly sweet flavour. The saucer shaped
fruit has scalloped edges and is pale green
when young, maturing to a creamy white. The
medium sized bushy plant is a prolific producer
throughout Summer, with the first fruit ready to
harvest within 50 days of germination. Sow seed
directly into the soil in a sunny position, in fertile, well
composted soil. Water around the base of the plant
and don’t allow it to completely dry out. The fruit is at
its tastiest when eaten young and green.
Older fruit can be added to slow cooked stews,
casseroles and potjies. Details: kirchhoffs.co.za
SWEET
& SUNNY
Tasty Summer squash, beautiful and bizarre
leaf snaps and nectar rich flowers
Garden tasks for November
• It is still a good time to plant Summer flowers
like impatiens and begonias for shade, and
dahlias, gazanias, gaillardia, gaura, marigolds,
portulaca and salvia for sun.
• Feed roses and hydrangeas once a month
and water more often if it gets very hot. Renew
mulch to keep the soil moist for longer.
• Succession sowing of most vegetables can
be continued up until the end of this month.
• In the absence of rain, water deeply at
least once a week.
• To prevent fungus diseases in the lawn, do not
water during the hottest time of the day. Rather
water early in the morning or late afternoon.
We’re planting …
Cuphea Sweet talk because
it’s the perfect pollinator plant.
It produces nectar-rich flowers in
shades of bright red, deep pink, or
lavender splash. Plants are low growing
and compact, suitable for a sunny bed,
border or containers. They are heat tolerant
and flower from Spring to Autumn. For
a neat and colourful border, space
plants 20 to 30cm apart. Plants are
heat tolerant but will do best with
regular deep watering in
Summer. Fertilise once
a month.
Slack-packing through the
De Hoop Nature Reserve
Four days of walking and exploring the beauty of the De Hoop Nature Reserve ...
enjoying the wealth of marine, bird and animal life and discovering rare plants.
And at the end of each day’s hike, tucking into gourmet meals and staying over in a
luxurious, comfortable villa. Ramblers dreams are made of this.
Slack-packing adventures are made for those of us who love to walk
through magnificent reserves, connect with nature, but aren’t that
keen on the whole camping-in-the-middle-of-nowhere thing! After a
strenuous day, the last thing we want is to fiddle around with tent poles
and try to rustle up something on an open fire.
So we’re mad about the newly launched The De Hoop Trail: Vlei to
Whales ... a fully catered and guided four day, three night experience
where you’ll cover about 38km through the pristine De Hoop Nature
and Marine Reserve. One of the largest natural areas managed by
CapeNature, it’s just a wonderful four days of sea, deserted beaches,
exploring the Ramsar-listed vlei, wide open spaces, coastal fynbos, and
diverse animal and bird life, including the endangered Cape Vulture
and the very best whale watching.
Guests stay in the De Hoop Collection’s De Mond Villa, a newly
restored and refurbished Villa right on the edge of the Ramsar-listed
vlei. An exclusive blend of authenticity, luxury and comfort, the five
en-suite bedroomed De Mond Villa offers awesome interior decor,
Wi-Fi, a private outside area with barbeque and swimming pool and
the most incredible views. It is completely off the grid (thanks to a
combination of solar and gas facilities) and being right on the edge of
the vlei spectacular birdlife awaits you, plus the possible sightings of
wild bush pigs, otters, rock dassies, herds of Eland and even leopard
tracks. Should the villa already be booked, The Collection’s historic
Melkkamer Homestead on the opposite side of the vlei is offered as
an alternative. And you won’t go hungry ... guests tuck into breakfasts
or brunches, lunches and picnics, snacks and dinners.
De Hoop is an easy three hour drive from Cape Town or George.
A minimum of four guests are required - and you should be
reasonably fit to enjoy the experience. Not suitable for those under 12.
The rate of R14200 a person (valid until Sept 2025) includes the three
night/four day experience, with a guide, all meals and snacks, local
