Eight books. One wine. And a brilliant lifestyle magazine.
Not content with making fine wines, the Bruce Jack team
also produce Jack Journal - along with a collection of
brilliant designers and gifted writers who, they say, practise a
long-form art of writing where context trumps sound-bites, a
magazine they describe as a gorgeous, beautifully crafted,
long-lasting, collectable magazine, at a time of rushed, massproduced
things designed to break, wear out and be ugly.
It’s a lifestyle mag ... the latest filled with everything from
indigenous medicinal plants to regenerative agriculture,
from the brilliance of beetles to how blisters felled a walker
on the Camino Santiago. Read it with a glass of
Bruce Jack Reserve Stream of Consciousness - a
hedonistic nose of chocolate-smothered purple plums,
framed by vanilla and Indian spices, with notes of black and
red forest fruit, brambles and white pepper.
The mag’s R140, the wine R150, from brucejack.com
Two wickedly thrilling reads. Steve Cavanagh’s Witness 8 opens with a murder.
One witnessed by nanny and housemaid Ruby Johnson who knows the killer…
and anonymously calls it in to the police. Open and shut case. But Ruby lied.
An innocent man has been set up. And it’s up to ex-conman-turned-lawyer
Eddie Flynn to find out the truth. Great characters, killer twists. Headline • A
hit-and-run turns out, after the chief medical examiner discovers some puzzling
inconsistencies, to be murder, with the victim severely tortured before death.
It’s the first, but not last, murder of a twisted, clever killer, now on the radar of
Detective Robert Hunter. The Death Watcher. It’s Chris Carter, so you know it’s
going to be twisted, with a gut-wrenching twist. Simon and Schuster
When local pub owner David jumps
into the river to save a drowning
stranger, he’s celebrated as a hero. His
actions, and face, are broadcast on
news stations throughout the country.
For most people, new-found fame
is celebrated. For David, it’s a death
sentence. He and his wife, attorney
Marcie, are suddenly experiencing
all sorts of strange and unsettling
experiences. Their dog goes missing
from their secure yards. Everyday
household items turns up in strange
locations. Someone’s messing with
them. Why? It appears David isn’t who
everyone - including his wife - thinks
he is. But then this mother-of-two
discovers his secret life. And it might
just cost them theirs! Lies He Told Me
by James Patterson and David Ellis is a
ripping good read. Century
In the luxury city of Riyadh, a billion
dollar deal is about to go badly
wrong. A lavish night out is about
to end in murder. And the British
government is about to be plunged
into crisis. In Britain, the latest in a
long line of peers lies dying ... and
his will triggers an inheritance with
explosive consequences. Two deaths,
continents apart. Both at the centre of
a criminal’s plot for revenge. Revenge
gripping stories. And let’s face it ...
what’s better than a Jeffery Deaver?
A devious collection of 13 Jeffery
some excitement, appearances from
Lincoln Rhyme and Colter Shaw.
Try not to read all 13 in Dead Ends
unexpected twists every which
If a pancake and a crepe had a love child, it would be a
Dutch baby! Which, with oven roasted tomatoes, is the first
recipe in Yotam Ottolenghi’s much-anticipated new book.
And from there on, past salmon fishcakes with chermoula
remoulade, cheeseball lemon rice with chilli butter, and
Bohemian fish pie, to the last Malty figgy pudding recipe,
it’s just one extraordinarily sensational comfy dish after
another. But what makes it comfort food? As Yotam points
out, one kid’s melted cheese-toasted sandwich dream is
another kid’s nightmare. Very often, behind a comforting
dish often lies a relationship: A unique attachment. From
meatloaf to matza ball soup to marble cake ... for each of
us it’s a feeling we’re remembering about them. Perhaps,
he says, it should be called memory food or community
food. Whichever ... Ottolenghi Comfort is overflowing
with dishes that may already be in your comfort food
bank, others that will hopefully, once you’ve made them
enough times for people you love, become them ... dishes
and memories and feelings to pass on from generation to
generation. R795, Ebury Press.
5Fun facts about
Shaina-Rae
Text: Jennifer Campbell Photograph: SHREN MEDIA Makeup: Michelle haywood Dress: lush boutique, ballito
Meet Shaina-Rae Bauwens, an energetic and inspiring
East Coast Radio presenter, and all-round go-getter with a
wicked sense of humour.
A natural on the mic, Shaina-Rae admits her journey into radio wasn’t something
she planned. "I never thought I'd ever be on radio, but we organically found each
other, and I am so grateful for that!" she says. Having joined the East Coast Radio
team earlier this year, it’s clear this is a role she was meant to fill, and her passion
for connecting with listeners shines through.
1.
She’s a coffee aficionado
Radio isn’t the only thing keeping her busy. Alongside
her husband Pascal, Shaina-Rae co-owns Now Coffee,
a thriving business that fuels both her entrepreneurial
spirit and her caffeine needs. “Between the radio and
our coffee business, life’s pretty full, but I wouldn’t have
it any other way!” The husband-and-wife team own two
coffee shops – one in Glenashley and a newly-opened
space in Umhlanga, as well as a few drive-throughs
in Durban.
2.
She loves to get cosy
When she’s not on-air or brewing up something
special, Shaina-Rae loves to kick back and relax with a
cheesy rom-com, a blanket and a hot cup of tea. And
if she has a Colleen Hoover book in hand, even better!
"That’s my guilty pleasure—couch, popcorn and a
soppy love story. Heaven!" she laughs.
3.
She stays active
Shaina-Rae’s life hasn’t always been about radio and
business. She used to be a dancer and still dreams of
lacing up her dancing shoes one day. “I’d love to get
back into dancing if my body allows me! It’s something
I miss a lot.” For now, she’s swapped dancing for
running. She ran her first Two Oceans Ultra Marathon
this year and has her sights set on doing it again. “I’m
aiming to do it next year, and hopefully again and
again. It’s such an incredible experience!”
4.
She has a quirky side
Like everyone, she has her quirks too. One of
them? A pretty intense pet peeve! “My mom has
self-diagnosed me with misophonia,” she admits.
“I have crazy reactions to certain sounds, like
chewing, swallowing and tapping. My family are
brilliant at managing me, though. I just have to
laugh at myself sometimes!”
5.
She wants to travel the world
orn in Cape Town but raised in various cities, April
has called Ballito home for the last 10 years – and it’s
where her musical journey began. Her passion for
music is deeply rooted in her family. Her dad Ron, a
talented saxophone player, and mom, a lover of the
arts, instilled an appreciation for music in her from a young
age. While all her siblings were introduced to piano lessons,
it was April who pursued music with unwavering dedication.
Although initially discouraged by rejections from school
choirs, April found her voice in jazz, drawing inspiration from
legends such as Etta James and Billie Holiday.
THE BIRTH OF THE APRIL DREW PROJECT
The April Drew Project came together almost
serendipitously. April’s dad, always on the lookout for
musical talent, discovered Ryan Lawler, a keyboardist, quite
by chance when he heard him playing a weekend gig.
Despite the short notice, April invited Ryan and his band
members, drummer Theo Pillay and bassist Dylan Ellis, to
perform with her at the Pumpkin Theatre in Ballito. The
chemistry between them was undeniable and The April
Drew Project was born.
A UNIQUE SOUND
Their music style blends R&B with jazz influences, creating a
unique sound that resonates with audiences. Although they
are still in the early stages of their journey, April’s excitement
is palpable as she speaks of each performance being better
than the last. The band’s dynamic is enhanced by the closeknit
relationship between the musicians, who share an
almost telepathic understanding during performances.
FUTURE ASPIRATIONS
April is not just a performer; she’s also a songwriter. While
the band has yet to release original music, she’s working
on storytelling through her songs, with titles such as “I Wish
It Would Rain” already in the works. Although jazz is her first
love, she is open to exploring new genres to connect with
a wider audience.
Looking ahead, April has her sights set on a theatre and
performance major at the University of Cape Town, with
a long-term dream of writing a musical. Last year, she was
shortlisted to study music at New York University and a visit
to the city earlier this year left her inspired and eager to
return, where she hopes to transfer her studies and further
her career in the future.
GROUNDED IN AMBITION
Despite her ambitions, April remains grounded, appreciating
the peaceful life on the North Coast while recognising that
her journey is just beginning. With upcoming performances
all over the North Coast and plans to release original music,
The April Drew Project is a band to watch out for. As April
says, the key to success is practice and determination -
qualities she embodies as she pursues her dream.
Personal stories
and practical tips
Umhlanga-based mom and corporate professional
Monica Pram has recently released her debut book A Taste
of Corporate Life: Savvy Advice for Aspiring Professionals
That is Not Sugar-Coated, offering a refreshingly candid
perspective on the corporate world.
Text: Jennifer Campbell Photograph: TILANIE GROTE PHOTOGRAPHY
rawing from her extensive 20-year career,
mostly within the corporate sector, Monica
weaves personal experiences and practical
advice into a guide designed for those
navigating their professional journey.
After graduating with a bachelor of commerce in
marketing and economics degree from UKZN,
Monica joined Unilever, where she thrived by
working across different departments. This
exposed her to various facets of corporate
life, including the challenges of office politics,
managing different leadership styles, and the
often-unspoken nuances that can make or
break a career. She found great joy in mentoring
and coaching colleagues, a passion that inspired
her to write this book.
Monica’s transition from corporate life began
when she faced the personal challenge of
starting a family, which led to her decision
to step back from her career in 2019.
During the pandemic in 2020, with ample
time on her hands, she decided to put
pen to paper and compile her wealth of
knowledge into a book. What started
as a therapeutic exercise evolved into
a mission to guide others who might
feel lost or overwhelmed in the fastpaced
corporate environment.
Monica provides practical, nononsense
advice on critical topics that
professionals are often unprepared
for, such as handling difficult bosses,
navigating office politics and managing
career setbacks. She emphasises the
importance of mentorship, resilience and adaptability, as
well as the impact of small, everyday decisions in shaping
one’s career trajectory. “There’s no textbook for managing
your inbox, meetings, or office politics,” she says, “but these
are the things that can make all the difference.”
Monica also touches on the emotional toll
that often comes with striving for career
success, particularly for those who feel
stuck or undervalued. She recounts her
experiences of seeing talented individuals
fail to rise in their careers owing to a lack
of support or understanding of workplace
dynamics. Through her book, she hopes
to offer readers the insights and tools
they need to thrive, even in the most
challenging corporate environments.
With its approachable tone and
relatable anecdotes, the book is for
anyone looking to make sense of the
complex, and often overwhelming,
corporate world. Monica’s goal is simple:
to inspire professionals to remain
resilient and navigate their careers
with confidence and clarity,
knowing that the little things
often make the biggest
difference.
Heart
of
gold
Victoria Naidu is one of the directors of
SAFE Foster Network, an organisation
that rescues and rehomes abandoned
and abused dogs.
When Victoria moved from Johannesburg to KZN three
years ago, she found herself in a new place, surrounded
by unfamiliar faces. But what began as a daunting
transition soon turned into a life-changing experience.
Now, as one of the directors of SAFE, Victoria reflects on
how her involvement with animal rescue helped heal
her heart and gave her a new sense of purpose.
Text: Jennifer Campbell Photographs: PEACH STUDIOS
FINDING HER PATH
Victoria’s journey to becoming a key figure in animal
rescue wasn’t planned. After the painful loss of her
doberman in Johannesburg, she felt the void left by
her beloved pet and was unsure if she was ready to
welcome another dog into her life. However, when she
learnt about SAFE, which had opened soon after the
floods in 2022, she reached out to them and offered
her help.
Despite working a demanding corporate job at the
time, Victoria was determined to make a difference. She
began by fostering two puppies, even convincing her
boss to let her bring them to the office. The experience
not only reignited her love for animals but also gave
her a new sense of purpose. “Being involved with SAFE
changed my life and gave me an opportunity to do
something that was greater than myself,” she explains.
“I had the incredible opportunity to work alongside
some phenomenal human beings who believed in
second chances and wanted to make a difference and
took responsibility for change.”
BECOMING A DIRECTOR AT SAFE
Victoria’s dedication did not go unnoticed. After a few
months of hands-on involvement, from fostering dogs
to helping with marketing and various projects, she was
approached by Kerry Janke, one of the original founders
of SAFE, to join as a director.
Accepting the role was a natural step for Victoria, who
had grown deeply connected to SAFE’s mission. “It’s a
double-edged sword,” she says of working in animal
rescue. “Seeing animals in heart-breaking situations is
tough. A new level of empathy, love and patience gets
unlocked.” Yet, the reward of watching these animals
recover and thrive makes every tear worth it.
EMOTIONAL ROLLERCOASTER
Victoria’s journey with SAFE has been filled with highs
and lows. One of the most challenging aspects of fostering
is saying goodbye. She recalls her first foster puppies
and the deep bond she formed with them. “It was bittersweet,”
she admits. But over time, she learned that love
also means letting go, allowing these animals to find
their forever homes where they can continue to grow
and thrive. Through her work with SAFE, Victoria has met
incredible people who share her passion for animals.
The rescue community on the North Coast is tightly knit,
with various organisations collaborating to save as many
animals as possible. Victoria is forever grateful to her
mentors Kerry and Shaun Janke who work tirelessly at
SAFE and are the heartbeat of the organisation.
A NEW CHAPTER
Victoria’s move to KZN three years ago was unexpected
and what was meant to be a brief escape turned into a
permanent relocation as she fell in love with the area’s
laid-back lifestyle. “The beach, the sunsets and the community
have made Umdloti feel like home,” she says. “The
stark contrast to the hustle and bustle of Johannesburg
was precisely what my soul craved. Here, I found
healing, fulfilment and the opportunity to build the life
I had always envisioned,” she says.
expand their team. You can
ADVERTORIAL
Unscripted conversations with Candice
Candice Davis is a finalist in the Mrs. South Africa pageant, as well as the owner of
Perfect Ledger Strategic Finance, an accounting firm. She answers some frequently
asked questions about how to prepare for a pageant.
What are your top tips
for preparing for pageant
interviews?
1. Prepare
When you fail to prepare, you prepare
to fail. And you will be more relaxed
and more confident when you know
you are prepared.
2. Dress Well
Prepare your outfit way before time.
Remember, what you are wearing will
be the judges first impression of you.
What do you want to communicate
to them with what you are wearing?
Avoid anything that makes you
uncomfortable; it will show.
3. Be yourself
The judges want to know you.
They are not looking for a replica of
somebody else.
4. Be honest
If you are asked about your opinion on
something, give honest opinions. Don’t
answer according to what you think the
judges want to hear or try to impress.
Be authentic.
How do you unlock your full
potential to inspire others?
To unlock my full potential, I actively tap
into living in my truth and doing what
feels right. I showcase what my skills
and strengths are and delve into selfawareness,
cultivating empathy, and
practice active listening. With Christ
as my foundation, I believe that it is
important to be my authentic self, use
my voice and platform to share who
and whose I am, and lead by example. I
ground myself in meditation and prayer
and surround myself with inspiring
influences to elevate and share my
journey. To further inspire others, I
encourage and challenge them to set
clear goals.
What are your top tips for
choosing what outfits to
wear during your pageant?
• Always style yourself based on what you
are comfortable with.
• Choose colours that compliment your
skin tone.
• Make a statement with the entire look,
including shoe choices and hair
(the coordination should always speak
to what you are trying to represent as
a person).
• Stay true to your personal style by
choosing outfits that make you
feel confident and authentic. When
you feel comfortable in what you’re
wearing, it shows.
• Prioritise fit and comfort. Your dress
should fit well and allow you to move
gracefully. You don’t want to be
adjusting it or feeling uncomfortable
on stage.
• Pick colours that complement your skin
tone. Certain colours can enhance your
natural glow. Try different shades and
see what makes you pop!
• Choose timeless elegance over trends.
While trends come and go, a timeless,
classy look will always make a statement.
• Accessorise wisely. Accessories can
elevate your outfit, but be careful
not to overdo it. Let your dress and
personality shine without too much
distraction.
• Ultimately, your outfits should reflect
your unique personality and help
you feel empowered throughout the
pageant.
Next month we will talk
about managing finances.
Where fashion
meets fun
Dawn Macnab is the creative
force behind Disco Dawn, an
Umhlanga-based fashion
brand that’s all about art, fun
and self-expression.
Text: Jennifer Campbell Photographs: Jacques Weyers
Dawn spent many years in the fastpaced
world of advertising, where
she worked with big names like Mr.
Price and Milady's. But after years of
juggling deadlines and late nights,
she knew she needed a change.
“I’m an all-or-nothing person,” Dawn
explains. “And advertising was just
becoming too much.” Then came the
pandemic. With time on her hands
and a restless creative mind, Dawn
decided to channel her artistic energy
into something new. She started a fun
Instagram page where she sold highquality,
imported jackets. “It all started
with a few jackets on a mannequin,”
she laughs. “But I wanted it to be
different – relaxed, fun, and not like
typical shopping.”
A BRAND WITH HEART – AND LOTS
OF PERSONALITY!
It wasn’t long before Disco Dawn
evolved beyond jackets. Dawn’s love
for travel, art and upcycling quickly
found its way into her designs. Vintage
tapestries, table linens and even
deadstock lace and denim became
the building blocks of her unique
creations. From romantic linen dresses
to daring catsuits perfect for a night
out, there’s no limit to her creativity.
And the best part? Most pieces are a
one-off. “I hate waste,” Dawn says. “So,
I cut up fabrics and turn them into
something special.” Whether it's a bold
resort collection inspired by her trips
to Ibiza or corsets made from vintage
fabric she discovered in Cape Town,
each piece has a story to tell.
A FASHION EXPERIENCE
LIKE NO OTHER
Shopping with Dawn is far from your
standard retail experience. She regularly
hosts pop-up events where clients can sip
champagne, try on clothes and even play
dress-up with her infamous Disco Dawn
rental box. “I want women to have fun when
they shop,” she says. “It’s about making them
feel confident and relaxed.”
For Dawn, community and empowerment
are key. She works closely with Agatha
Nyimai, a local seamstress who helps bring
her designs to life. Together, they create
fashion that’s personal, sustainable and
always a little bit quirky.
From pop-ups to exciting collaborations
with local artists, Dawn’s creative world is
constantly expanding. “I’m just having fun
with it,” she says. “And maybe that’s why it’s
working so well.”
ADVERTORIAL
Meet the cardiologist:
Dr Deya Ramachandran
Dr Deya Ramachandran is a partner in the Umhlanga-based cardiology practice of
Drs YT Singh, Connel Barnabas, Aveen Mahabal and Deya Ramachandran.
Dr Deya Ramachandran is a young, dedicated
cardiologist, one of only a few practising female
cardiologists in KwaZulu-Natal, which makes her
somewhat extraordinary: “This field of medicine
is extremely demanding,” she says, “and it’s mostly
male dominated. Achieving a well-balanced work-home life
is a massive challenge.”
Both Deya’s parents are medical doctors – now retired – from
South India, and when they moved with their children to
South Africa, they joined the government medical
sector. For Deya, their commitment to the
profession and their stringent work ethic
rubbed off on her: “I am who I am today,
because of them. I work extremely hard
because I grew up in an environment
where hard work was a given and
the only route to success. My
parents encouraged me to follow
medicine as a career, and it seemed
my brain worked in that direction,
so medicine was my choice. I can’t
imagine having done anything else.”
Deya matriculated at Stanger
Secondary School, a public school,
studied medicine at the University of
KwaZulu-Natal, completed her internship
at King Edward Hospital, her community
service at Stanger Hospital, then was a medical
officer in cardiology for six months: “That’s when my
interest in cardiology took hold. I completed my internal
medicine qualification in KwaZulu-Natal, then studied
cardiology at Albert Luthuli hospital.” She smiles, “I’m
passionate about cardiology, but there’s a part of me that
chose it because it was not commonly chosen by women,
and I love breaking down stereotypes. Women have a
great deal to offer in this field.”
Deya rose to the challenge, and increasingly, her patients
are women who, for religious or other reasons, are more
comfortable consulting a female cardiologist.
Deya is married to Aveen Mahabal, a partner in the same
practice – he qualified in 2019, and has been there for five
years. Being raised by doctors, and living with a specialist,
Deya is in an environment she knows extremely well. As the
youngest member of the practice, it was very important
to her to join a group of experienced cardiologists from
whom she could learn: “And I’ve learned so much. It’s a great
advantage being part of Drs YT Singh, Connel Barnabas,
Aveen Mahabal and Deya Ramachandran. There are times
when we have a challenging case, and this allows us to
consult as a team with different opinions – through different
eyes – about the diagnosis and appropriate treatment. It’s a
good network and wonderful support system which
is not only advantageous for us, as cardiologists,
but for the patients, too.”
Deya enjoys all aspects of cardiology:
“I can’t pinpoint which aspect I find
most interesting. I find all equally
rewarding. I manage heart failure,
arrythmias, heart block, coronary
artery disease, valvular heart disease,
infective endocarditis and a whole
host of pathologies. Coronary artery
stenting, pacemakers, implantable
cardiac defibrillators are all routinely
performed. For me, the most
rewarding is when an acute myocardial
infarction patient comes into trauma, and
within 30 minutes, we’ve taken that patient
in for stenting. We work in the catheterisation
laboratory as a team, and the radiographer,
catheterisation laboratory nurses and technologists are all an
integral part of that team.”
Both Deya and husband Aveen, follow healthy lifestyles:
“Well, to the best of our ability,” she says frankly, “given the
juggling which is required by our demanding careers.
I grew up in a home where healthy eating and living was
valued, and I do my utmost to follow that.”
Deya is interested in women’s health in cardiology, and
she’s keen to promote it. “I’m committed to assisting my
female patients to take steps to improve their lifestyles.
I believe, as a female cardiologist, I have a great deal of
insight to offer in that area.”
The
Sweet
side
Text: Jennifer Campbell Photographs: @Steveburnsphotography
On the North Coast, we’re
surrounded by cane fields,
most of which produce
sugar. But one farm is
making something a
little less well-known
– jaggery, a traditional
sweetener used widely in
India. Keith McLaren is the
founder and owner of SA
Jaggery, a local company
that’s producing the
product on our shores, and
giving it a uniquely South
African twist.
WHAT EXACTLY IS JAGGERY?
Jaggery is a natural, unrefined
sweetener made from sugarcane
juice. Unlike regular sugar, jaggery
retains all its natural nutrients because
it doesn’t go through the rigorous
refining process that strips away the
good stuff. It’s rich in minerals such as
iron, magnesium and potassium and
it has a deep, molasses-like flavour.
Think of it as sugar’s more wholesome,
earthy cousin.
POSITIVE CHANGE
Keith’s journey into the world of
jaggery began with a mission to uplift.
Having grown up on a sugarcane farm,
he saw an opportunity to support the
micro-farmers in Zululand who were
struggling to get by. These farmers,
with small plots of sugarcane, were
finding it difficult to make a living
because they couldn’t afford to get
their cane to the mills. Keith decided to
step in and change the game.
He teaches emerging farmers how
to grow sugarcane organically and
provides them with the necessary
training and resources to run
sustainable businesses. In return, he
purchases a portion of their harvest to
produce jaggery. Once the jaggery is
made, these farmers are welcome to
sell some of it themselves, creating an
additional sustainable income source
that wasn’t there before.
LEARNING FROM THE MASTERS
Before starting the company, Keith’s
dedication to authenticity took him
all the way to India, where he learned
the traditional jaggery-making
process from local experts. With the
knowledge in hand, he returned
home, where he and his team set
about building the first-ever organic
jaggery production plant in the
country. Fast forward to today, and
SA Jaggery's plant is up and running,
and interest in the product is steadily
growing. It’s a process that’s been
years in the making, with plenty of
trial and error along the way.
A HEALTHIER CHOICE
Jaggery is unrefined, and with all its
molasses and nutrients intact, offers a
slow-release energy that doesn’t spike
blood sugar levels like regular sugar
does. Despite being a new player in
the sweetener market, it’s already
catching the eye of local restaurants,
coffee shops and heath stores on the
North Coast.
The team would love to expand
and potentially even franchise their
jaggery production model to other
African countries. The goal? To create
more jobs, uplift more communities,
and spread the word about this
unrefined alternative to sugar.
Family-friendly
flavours
Umhlanga-based mom of two, Jessie Buxton, juggles her day job as a recruitment
specialist while moonlighting as a content creator. She recently added something new
to her repertoire – a recipe eBook titled Dinners for Four Under R150.
What inspired you to put this recipe book together?
I’m quite the frugal shopper! Being raised by my mom
who was solo parenting three kids meant money was
always super tight, and she had to get really creative with
her spending. While it was a challenging way to live, I’m
incredibly grateful for the lessons it taught me about
creating an affordable and sustainable lifestyle for my family.
This has sparked my creativity in the kitchen, allowing me to
whip up delicious recipes that won’t break the bank. I love
sharing my budget-friendly tips, tricks and grocery hauls
on social media, and even the odd affordable recipe, and
it’s been wonderful to see how much people enjoy them.
So, I thought, why not turn all this into an eBook filled with
affordable family dinner ideas?
Have you always enjoyed cooking?
I definitely didn’t grow up with a fascination for recipes and
cooking, but I always loved watching cooking shows and
competitions. Since becoming a mom and trying to keep
up with my kids’ ever-evolving taste buds (if you know, you
know!), I’ve found myself spending more and more time
in the kitchen. Surprisingly, it’s become a space where I
can relax and unwind, turning meal prep into a creative
escape. Who knew that whipping up dinners could be so
therapeutic?
How has the response to the book been so far?
The response has blown me away! I sold over 100 copies
in the first two days, and it’s been going strong ever since.
Almost daily, I receive messages from moms thanking me for
creating a recipe book that not only helps them keep their
grocery bills down but also offers their families delicious
and exciting meals to look forward to. I really aimed to break
away from the usual mundane meals, and it feels amazing
to hear that people are enjoying the out-of-the-norm dishes
I included. My goal was to create easy-to-cook, wholesome
meals that leave you feeling full and happy – and it seems
like I hit the mark!
While the haddock is in the oven, put your pasta
on the boil in salted water.
Add your peas to your boiling pasta (to save
dishes) or boil your peas separately.
Once your haddock is done, flake the pieces and
add them into a pan with more butter, the peas,
cream and parmesan.
Stir together on a low heat until combined and
looking thick and creamy.
Overlooking the Umhlanga
ocean views, modern design and a
vibe that is laid-back yet stylish. While
it’s well-known for its weekend party
scene, this trendy space shouldn’t be
overlooked when it comes to food. We
visited for a leisurely lunch and were
treated to some fabulous flavours.
COCKTAILS AND GOOD VIBES
We kicked things off with a couple of
cocktails that really set the mood.
The blueberry mojito was everything
you’d expect – refreshing, a bit
tangy, with just the right amount
of sweetness. On the other hand,
the strawberry and mango passion
daiquiri was a tropical dream. It’s
exactly the kind of drink you’d want
in hand while soaking in the beach
views.
STARTING IN STYLE
For starters, we went with the
Tempura Prawn Ritz, and wow, what
a way to begin. Think smoky cream
cheese wrapped in avocado, crispy
tempura prawns and a sprinkling of
blueberry pearls and pistachios. It was
a beautiful balance of creamy and
crunchy, with just a hint of sweetness
that worked perfectly.
MAINS THAT DELIVER
And then came the sushi. The New Phoenix Roll was a showstopper – filled with
salmon and cream cheese, topped with mustard mayo, cherry tomatoes, and a
sprinkle of caviar. But the best part? The sauce was lit and poured at the table by
our lovely waitron Gailee, adding a bit of drama to the meal. The Crisp Mist Roll
was another hit – a crispy fried California roll with prawn, cream cheese and a
spicy kick from pickled jalapeño. With a drizzle of teriyaki and kewpie mayo, the
rolls were packed with flavour.
The star of the show, however, was definitely the pepper-crusted tuna. Seared
to perfection and served with caramelised butter and fresh thyme, and flamed
with cognac, it was rich, but not overpowering, and the potato foam and roasted
veggies were spot on. Comfort food, but elevated.
A SWEET FINALE
For dessert, we couldn’t resist the
caramel panna cotta. It was silky,
glaze and chocolate flakes that made
it feel super indulgent. If you’re more
of an ice cream fan, the vanilla ice
cream with homemade caramel and
Belgium chocolate is the way to go –
simple, but oh-so-satisfying.
Ga-KasiNomics
The strength of Township
Wealth, Powered by Gagasi FM
KwaZulu-Natal is said to
contribute over R488 Billion
to our country’s GDP. 6% of
that GDP contribution, comes
from the township economy
within KZN.
But what does this have anything to
do with Gagasi FM, a radio station?
Gagasi FM is a uniquely KZN
contemporary radio station with a
strong local identity, which speaks
to the urban (and suburban), young
black adults of the province, in both
IsiZulu & English. We call this infusion
of languages, ZUNGLISH.
As the biggest commercial radio
station in the province with over
1,4million listeners per week, after
conducting research, we learned that
73% of our listeners reside in eKasi
(the township), while the remaining
percentage lives in suburbia.
Within this pool of listeners:
• 50% of the Gagasi FM consumer
(from both ekasi & Suburbia) earn a
personal income of R10K+
• 44% of the Gagasi FM Kasi
consumers have a HHI of R10K+
• Whilst 55% of the Gagasi suburbia
consumer have a HHI of 15K+
So, what does this mean for you and
your business?
When it comes to successfully
conveying your brand message to a
specific target market, you need not
only relatability, but also authenticity.
The Gagasi FM Consumer is a very
unique consumer. They do not try to
impersonate anyone and are true to
themselves. The township is close to
this consumer’s life. They live in the
township, work in the suburbs, and
aren’t really that interested in leaving
that environment. Why? Because
they have everything they need in
this environment; a home, malls,
entertainment, and can build their
dream homes in this environment, at
a lesser rate than that of the suburbs.
Those who have moved to the
suburbs, frequent the township, and
contribute to this economy by using
the salons, restaurants, car wash, and
other services that they need.
Gagasi FM plays a substantial role in
shaping and mirroring the cultural
landscape of KZN’s trendy young
adults, by embodying the attitudes
and lifestyles of this audience -
effectively communicating and
conveying messages to this specific
market.
What is it about the township that
sets this listener’s heart on fire?
Most would say it’s basically the
culture. They feel that there is this
authentic way of life in the township,
which is also communal, where they
feel that they will never walk alone. And
then, there is also the modernisation
of the township, which brings them the
convenience of living and running their
daily lives within that.
A
creative
life
Artist, writer, non-profit founder
and anthropologist…
Ashling McCarthy is a diverse creative committed
to social change.
espite her natural inclination
towards creativity, Ashling's
path into the art world was
met with early resistance. "I
was very creative at
school, but back then
it wasn't seen as a viable
career," she recalls. Her initial
desire to pursue jewellery design or
photography was redirected by her parents
towards graphic design, a more stable and
promising field at the time.
A NEW EXPERIENCE
Ashling's career took an unexpected turn
when she saw an advert in the newspaper
for a craft development programme. "They
were looking for young designers to work
with rural crafters," she says. This programme
brought her into direct contact with rural
communities, allowing her to live and work
with families while helping crafters to design
a product that would end up in the international
market. "It was an eye-opening experience,
realising how different life can be and
how much joy and positivity exists in these
areas despite the challenges."
This experience fuelled her passion for
learning about different cultures, leading
her to pursue a degree in anthropology
at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN).
"Anthropology teaches empathy, observation
and listening skills," Ashling explains. It also
sparked her interest in the social issues
that shape people's lives, which she further
explored in her master's degree focusing on
HIV and orphan care.
BLENDING ART AND ACTIVISM
While Ashling's professional journey led
her to establish I Learn to Live – Ngifundela
Ukuphila, a non-profit organisation focused
on providing education opportunities to
school children and youth in rural Zululand,
her artistic side never faded. In 2018, seeking
a way to unwind from the pressures of her
demanding career, she took up painting. "I
thought it would help me relax, but it actually
became another avenue for expression and
storytelling," she says. Her work in fine art and
illustration focuses on social commentary,
often reflecting themes she encountered in
her anthropological studies.
One notable series, "Women of Craft,"
highlights the undervaluation of handcrafted
goods made by rural women. "I wanted
56 Get It • Ballito • Umdloti • Umhlanga Nov 2024

to start a conversation about how
we devalue products in the hands
of certain people," she explains. "A
basket made by a rural woman can
be haggled over, devalued by the
buyer and sold cheaply at a local
market. The same basket can be sold
for much more by the buyer in a
fancy shop overseas because of who
they are or where they’re from. The
creator often gets little recognition
or compensation ."
Ashling's art extends beyond the
canvas, as she also writes. Her books,
Down at Jika Jika Tavern and The
Leopard in the Lala, part of The
Poacher’s Moon Crime Series, delve
into themes of wildlife conservation,
social inequality and belonging.
"Writing is where my passion truly lies,"
she admits.
A NEW CHAPTER
Recently, Ashling made the bold decision
to focus full-time on her creative
endeavours, closing her non-profit in
Zululand because of funding constraints.
"It's terrifying to step away
from what you've known for 14 years,"
she confesses. "But it's also exciting to
have the opportunity to explore my
art and writing more fully."
Her transition has not been without
its challenges. "Art is like any other
job—there’s so much work involved,
from creating to marketing," she
notes. Despite the hurdles, Ashling's
commitment to her craft remains
steadfast. Her upcoming projects
include developing a teacher's
guide and student workbook in
collaboration with two English
teachers for Down at Jika Jika
Tavern. The resources will help
students engage more deeply
with the stories and their themes.
She has found sharing her
work with others in this way
deeply rewarding. “Whether it's
painting or writing, art has such
immense value.”
COASTAL COMFORT
Text: Jennifer Campbell Photographs: CHRis allan photo
Located in Zululami Luxury
Coastal Estate, this beautifully
designed apartment
offers a seamless fusion of
functionality and style. We
chatted to the homeowners,
Louise and Craig Vogt, about
how they created a calm
space where every corner
serves a purpose.
How would you describe the
overall aesthetic of your home?
The overall design and aesthetic of
our home prioritise comfort and
liveability, creating a harmonious
balance between spacious living areas
and cosy, intimate bedrooms. Clean,
uncluttered lines define the aesthetic,
complemented by a neutral colour
palette featuring soft whites, ivories,
and warm beige tones.
We embraced a colour drenching
technique throughout the apartment,
applying the same hue across walls,
doors, architraves and skirtings.
This approach creates a seamless,
monochromatic look, saturating
the space in one colour and
establishing a neutral canvas that
allows for flexibility in decor. Having
downscaled from a large house near
the beach, where endless rooms
often remained closed off during
the week, we wanted our new home
to be efficient and purposeful.
Each area is designed with a specific
function in mind, and every piece of
furniture is thoughtfully selected for
its utility.
Did the coastal environment
influence your choice of
materials and colours?
Absolutely! The apartment is perched
high on a hill and surrounded
by the beauty of the forest, sea,
and sky. The interior palette was
designed to accentuate and frame
those stunning views while drawing
inspiration from them.
We incorporated earthy neutral
tones throughout the apartment,
reflecting the natural landscape,
along with soft greens that echo
the forest around us. This approach
creates a harmonious connection
between the indoors and outdoors.
Can you share any unique design
features or custom pieces you used
to elevate the overall look?
One of the standout features of
our apartment is the flooring. We
opted for oak-effect vinyl laid in a
herringbone pattern, which not only
enhances the feeling of space and
movement but also adds a touch of
elegance to the overall design.
In the kitchen, we made a significant
transformation by replacing all the
white cabinetry with stunning oak,
bringing warmth and richness to
the open-plan layout. To ensure a
cohesive look, we integrated the
fridge and freezer, allowing them to
blend seamlessly with the living room
instead of appearing overly functional.
For a touch of contrast, we introduced
a modern black dining room bar,
which adds a contemporary flair.
This bar serves multiple purposes,
providing a stylish space for storing
Less clutter
allows visitors
and friends to
easily embrace the
ambiance.
and pouring drinks, as well as a
dedicated coffee and tea station,
enhancing both functionality and
style in our living area.
We also introduced a three-metrelong
dining table, which we acquired
second-hand from a wine farm in the
Cape. This impressive piece not only
serves as a beautiful focal point in our
dining area but also enhances the
multifunctionality of the space.
The generous length of the table
allows for various activities to take
place simultaneously, reinforcing
the sense of openness we aimed for
throughout the apartment. It’s the
perfect spot for kids to tackle their
homework while we work on our
laptops, all while still having room to
serve dinner on the opposite end.
This versatility embodies our design
philosophy of creating spaces that are
both functional and inviting, making
the table a central hub for family
gatherings and daily life.
Louise and
Craig’s top tips
Colour drenching is the first tip we
would suggest to anyone looking to
transform their home. It makes such
a dramatic and instant difference to
the look and feel of a room.
High ceilings paired with tall
doorways contribute to a feeling of
luxury. If you have a view, frame it!
Don’t overdesign a home. Keep the
layout functional to minimise dead
space and maximise the use of
all areas.
Keep finishes minimalistic. Less
clutter allows visitors and friends to
easily embrace the ambiance.
A significant part of the overall
look and feel is lighting. The trick
to enhancing the architecture or
finishes within a home is to do it
subtly with anti-glare lighting. The
source of light should not be seen;
rather, let the effect the illumination
has on the object be the feature,
without drawing attention to the
light fitting itself.
Indoor plant of the month
Venus flytrap is a carnivorous little
plant that sounds creepy enough for
Halloween hi-jinks but is actually quite
practical and beautiful in a bizarre
kind of way. The leaves act as fly traps,
with the inner part of the leaf looking
like a pink mouth surrounded by
spiny, sharp teeth. Along comes a fly
and the leaf snaps shut.
When grown indoors, the Venus
flytrap needs at least six hours of sun,
so it will thrive in a sunny room, on a
windowsill or on the patio. Place the
plant in a 2 to 4cm deep saucer filled
with water. To prevent it from rotting,
let the tray dry out for a short period
every week but never let the plant
dry out completely as this will kill it.
There is no need to fertilise because
the flies provide all the nutrients the
plant needs.
In winter the plant goes dormant
and dies down. Move it to a cool area
so that it stays dormant. Water less,
keeping the soil lightly moist. Come
summer, move it back into the sun.
Veggie of the month
Squash Bennings Green is a quick and easy
to grow heirloom patty pan squash, that is regarded
as one of the tastiest of the summer squash varieties -
with a nutty, slightly sweet flavour. The saucer shaped
fruit has scalloped edges and is pale green
when young, maturing to a creamy white. The
medium sized bushy plant is a prolific producer
throughout summer, with the first fruit ready to
harvest within 50 days of germination. Sow seed
directly into the soil in a sunny position, in fertile, well
composted soil. Water around the base of the plant
and don’t allow it to completely dry out. The fruit is at
its tastiest when eaten young and green.
Older fruit can be added to slow cooked stews,
casseroles and potjies. Details: kirchhoffs.co.za
portulaca and salvia for sun.
• Succession sowing of most vegetables can
be continued up until the end of this month.
• In the absence of rain, water deeply at
• To prevent fungus diseases in the lawn, do not
water during the hottest time of the day. Rather
water early in the morning or late afternoon.
We’re planting …
Cuphea Sweet talk because
it’s the perfect pollinator plant.
It produces nectar-rich flowers in
shades of bright red, deep pink, or
lavender splash. Plants are low growing
and compact, suitable for a sunny bed,
border or containers. They are heat tolerant
and flower from spring to autumn. For
a neat and colourful border, space
plants 20 to 30cm apart. Plants are
regular deep watering in
