Centennial College is proud to be a part of 

a rich history of education in this province 

and in this city. We acknowledge that we 

are on the treaty lands and territory of the 

Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation

At 

Centennial College, our 

mandate is to educate 

students for career success, 

ensuring they are job-ready to meet the 

dynamic needs of industry and support 

economic growth. 

In 2022, as part of an institution-wide 

transformation, we established the 

Industry, Employment and Community 

Relations (IECR) Division with a central 

mandate to strengthen and steward 

strategic partnerships with industry, 

government, and community to 

support the career success of our 

students and address Canada’s 

workforce needs. 

Partnerships are crucial to fulfilling our 

mandate and mission, and it is through 

these strategic alliances, that we 

ensure that our education and training 

programs are informed by current 

industry needs, trends, and 

technological advancements. Our 

industry and community partners serve 

as expert advisors on Program Advisory 

Committees and strategic planning 

bodies, participate in forums as expert 

speakers; provide co-op and other 

work-integrated learning opportunities, 

engage with students in the classroom, 

participate in networking sessions with 

both students and graduates, and 

meet their workforce needs by hiring 

our graduates directly. Our partners 

generously offer donor-funded 

scholarships that remove financial 

barriers for our students, empowering 

them to fully engage in their 

educational journey and fully realize 

the transformative benefits of a postsecondary 

education. 

Additionally, we collaborate with our 

industry partners to support economic 

development through research projects 

that address industry challenges and 

promote innovation. Together, we 

create micro-credentials to meet 

targeted skill needs. Our flagship 

programs and investments in sectors 

such as aerospace, transportation, 

advanced manufacturing, green 

technologies, and healthcare are 

designed to ensure that Canadian 

companies and sectors thrive and lead 

the way both locally and globally. 

This year, we have launched a 

campaign to showcase our industrycollege 

partnerships and the incredible 

impact they have in preparing students 

to meet Canada’s workforce needs. 

The campaign will feature videos, 

blogs, and a range of social media 

content to highlight our collaborative 

efforts and achievements. 

Our commitment to industry-college 

partnership goes beyond individual 

projects; it is embedded in the very 

fabric of our institution. We believe that 

by fostering strong, mutually beneficial 

relationships with industry, we can 

create a brighter future for our 

students, our partners, and our 

community. I believe together, we can 

drive innovation, inspire growth, and 

help our communities thrive.

industry-college partnerships 

showcase! In 2023, as part 

of Centennial’s transformation journey, 

the Industry Engagement and Graduate 

Employment (IEGE) department was 

formed within the IECR Division. IEGE is 

focused on developing and 

strengthening strategic and mutually 

beneficial partnerships with industry 

across our college programs and 

services to foster alignment of 

educational outcomes with industry 

needs, address skills gaps, and create 

career pathways for our students and 

graduates. Such partnerships are 

pivotal to shaping the next generation 

of industry leaders and the workforce 

of tomorrow. 

We are delighted to present a

Partnership with purpose: How Centennial College and 

Community Outreach Canada are making a difference 

We are thrilled to feature an exclusive interview with 

Valerie Alphonso, the visionary Founder of Community 

Outreach Canada. Valerie has been an active force in the 

not-for-profit sector for several years, dedicating herself to 

empowering the lives of community members through 

skill-building opportunities and creating avenues for 

dignity and self-sufficiency. 

Our longstanding partnership with Community Outreach 

Canada exemplifies how academia and industry can come 

together to create meaningful change within our communities. 

Through our joint efforts, we have embarked on projects that 

not only enhance educational experiences but also contribute 

significantly to societal betterment.

Discovering Community Outreach Canada: A founder’s vision 

Since our inception in 2006, Community Outreach 

Canada has been more than just a non-profit 

organization to me; it is a dream brought to life, a 

mission deeply rooted in the heart of our community. 

Our journey began with a clear objective in mind: to 

identify the pressing needs within our communities 

and to bridge these gaps with the most effective, 

proven strategies. But we did not stop there. 

Understanding the power of collaboration, we have 

tirelessly worked to network with service providers and 

employers, creating a platform to showcase their 

invaluable products, services, and programs. This is not 

just about strengthening our communities—it's about 

weaving a tighter, more supportive social fabric that 

uplifts everyone involved. 

What excites me the most, however, is our commitment 

to innovation and the diverse programs we offer. We are 

proud to provide employment services and selfemployment 

opportunities for persons 

with disabilities, recognizing the 

untapped potential and fostering an 

inclusive workforce. Our life skills and 

customer service virtual training cater to 

Ontario Works recipients, equipping 

them with the tools they need for 

personal and professional growth. 

Furthermore, our newcomer virtual meet 

and greets offer a warm welcome and essential 

networking opportunities for those new to our country, 

helping them settle and thrive. And there is more on the 

horizon – our upcoming culinary program promises to 

open new pathways to employment and personal 

fulfilment through the universal language of food.

technological advancement, and diverse programming 

that Community Outreach Canada stands today as a

The reason we keep coming back to Centennial for student 

interns is simple: the students are not just reliable; they are 

exceptionally skilled. The breadth of programs at Centennial 

means we can recruit interns with a wide range of talents 

and expertise, perfectly aligning with our diverse program 

needs. These students bring fresh perspectives, innovative 

ideas, and the latest industry practices to our projects, 

enhancing our ability to serve the community effectively. 

Our partnership extends beyond just intern recruitment. We 

have had the privilege of collaborating with Centennial on 

various fronts, such as Volunteer Expos and hiring 

graduates who have transitioned from interns to valued 

full-time team members. We have also participated in 

Design Jam projects, which were a brilliant initiative by the 

college. These projects allow us to work closely with 

students who are eager to apply their skills to real-world 

challenges, helping us find innovative solutions to the issues 

we face. Spanning sixteen weeks, these students become 

integral members of our team, applying their knowledge and 

skills to make a significant impact. 

The support from Centennial College and its students has 

been a financial benefit for us, enabling us to further our 

mission and expand our reach within the community. The 

college's constant support has been a lifeline for us, 

providing resources, guidance, and the kind of enthusiastic 

interns that are hard to come by. 

The journey of the Homework Club initiative 

One standout initiative from our partnership with 

Centennial College involves student field 

placements and their work on the Homework Club 

in North East Scarborough. This project, aimed at 

providing educational support and a nurturing 

environment for local children, benefited immensely 

from the expertise and innovative teaching methods 

brought by these students. 

The success of the Homework Club did more than 

just aid the children it served; it sparked interest 

among broader community stakeholders, especially 

in housing, leading to discussions on integrating 

educational support into community development 

projects. This expansion of interest has broadened 

our impact and opened new avenues for 

collaboration, underscoring the value of our 

partnership with Centennial College and the 

meaningful, real-world experiences it provides for 

students. The ripple effect of this collaboration has 

opened new avenues for us, broadening our impact 

and reinforcing the power of community-focused 

educational programs. 

Evolving our partnership with Centennial College 

Our partnership with Centennial has been 

immensely beneficial for our organization. Their 

student recruitment process is seamless, having 

already hired a student as a full-time staff member. 

They have made it easy for us to find the talent we 

need and allow us to focus more on our programs 

and less on the logistics of bringing new interns on 

board. With Centennial, we have gained skilled 

interns, valuable collaborations, and the kind of 

support that fuels our continued success. By 

aligning our efforts, Community Outreach Canada 

and Centennial College are set to create more 

impactful learning opportunities and community 

development projects, reinforcing our shared 

commitment to empowering individuals and 

fostering a stronger, more resilient community. 

Our interview with Valerie highlights the essence of

and flavours for various applications, Giraffe Foods has 

been at the forefront of culinary innovation since its 

inception in 1997. With a robust track record of quality, 

consistency, and creativity, Giraffe Foods has become a 

beacon for those aspiring to make their mark in the food

their collaboration with Centennial College, particularly

Food Science Technology is an 

interdisciplinary field that blends 

microbiology, chemistry, engineering, 

biology, and nutrition to enhance food 

safety and quality. Centennial College's 

Food Science Technology program 

equips students for careers in quality 

control, laboratory analysis, product 

development, food safety, and more, 

ensuring grads are ready to tackle 

challenges in the food industry. 

Recipe for success: Education 

meets innovation 

First, let's set the scene. In November 2021, 

Centennial's Food Science Technology 

Professor Yvonne Henry, in collaboration with 

the Office of Industry Engagement and 

Graduate Employment (industry outreach 

area), embarked on the mission of 

establishing connections with various food 

science companies. Her aim was to provide 

her students with invaluable networking 

opportunities and insights into the offerings of 

the industry and what potential career 

pathways could look like. Yvonne, could you 

please share more about this initiative? 

Yvonne Henry: Absolutely! Our 

goal was to give our students a 

taste of the real world, bridging 

academic learning with practical 

industry insights. By connecting 

with companies like Giraffe 

Foods, we aimed to provide 

immersive experiences, from 

facility tours, to guest speaking 

collaborations and networking, 

helping our students carve out 

their future in the food industry. 

Melanie Budicky: I’m Melanie, overseeing 

Research and Development, Regulatory, 

Quality, and Food Safety at Giraffe Foods. 

We’re leaders in creating custom flavours 

and sauces, and we’re passionate about 

delivering quality and innovation. Engaging 

with students training in food science 

technology is vital to us. In 2021, we 

opened our Culinary Innovation Centre, a 

space dedicated to re-engineering and 

experimenting with flavours led by our 

experienced team of food scientists, culinary 

experts and our chef. Since 2021, Centennial 

College students have been actively engaging 

with us, participating in learning sessions and 

tours we’ve hosted at our Culinary Innovation 

Centre. These interactions have been designed 

to provide insights into our work and the 

industry at large and to connect students to our 

team members who share their career journey 

and passion for the food industry. We believe in 

inspiring students by showing them the career 

pathways through which their culinary 

aspirations can be transformed into tangible 

realities in the products we make. 

It sounds like a truly enriching experience for the 

students. Yvonne, could you elaborate on how this 

partnership has benefited them? 

Yvonne Henry: This collaboration has been 

invaluable in enriching our curriculum and 

motivating our students. Incorporating industry 

guest speakers like Melanie in our food 

manufacturing course this year has been 

amazing for students. And visiting Giraffe Foods' 

Culinary Innovation Centre was a pivotal 

moment for our students starting in 2021, and 

again each year after. It's one thing to learn 

about food science in a classroom; it's another 

to see it in action, where innovation meets 

execution. Students have been able to see the 

concepts they learn in class come to life at 

Giraffe Foods’ state-of-the-art facilities and 

guest speaking collaborations. It's not just 

about the technical skills; it’s about igniting a 

passion for food science, showing them the vast 

career paths and innovations in the industry. 

Melanie, reflecting on this partnership, how do you 

believe working with Centennial’s Food Science 

Technology program has helped Giraffe Foods? 

Melanie Budicky: Collaborating with Centennial 

College has been a wonderful experience. It's 

enabled us to meet and mentor the next 

generation of food scientists, some of whom 

have joined our team, bringing fresh ideas and 

enthusiasm. This partnership aligns perfectly 

with our mission to innovate and lead in the 

food industry. By engaging with these bright 

minds, we not only contribute to their education 

but also ensure a vibrant future for food science 

technology. The showcase sessions we have 

created in partnership with Centennial have 

also given our team the opportunity to present 

the capabilities, products and company we are 

so proud of.

and the South Asian Cultural, Health Association for 

Youth and Seniors (SACHAYS) 

Turning to one of our successful partnership 

outcomes, we have Avleen Kaur, a 2023 Food 

Science Technology Centennial alum who’s now 

working as Product Developer at Giraffe Foods. Can 

you share your experience transitioning from student 

to industry professional? 

Avleen Kaur: The educational experience I 

gained at Centennial College, coupled with the 

invaluable opportunities offered by the 

partnership with Giraffe Foods, has profoundly 

prepared me for my career in food science. 

Through the program, I acquired a robust 

theoretical foundation in food science 

technology, complemented by practical handson 

experience. This equipped me with the 

necessary skills and knowledge to seamlessly 

transition into my role from a co-op student at 

Giraffe Foods to R&D Product Developer. The 

partnership offered early exposure to industry 

practices, enhancing my understanding of food 

product development, thus laying a solid 

groundwork for my professional endeavors. 

And now to Pushpinderjeet Kaur, our second 

Centennial alum who graduated in 2022 from 

Biotechnology who’s now working as Product 

Developer at Giraffe Foods. Can you share your 

experience transitioning from student to industry 

professional? 

Pushpinderjeet Kaur: Transitioning from being 

an agriculture graduate to the food industry 

wouldn’t have been possible without my 

education at Centennial College. The advanced 

biotechnology course provided me with the 

technical and analytical knowledge essential 

for my current job. It instilled in me the 

confidence to seize opportunities boldly. 

The facility tours offered by Centennial College 

offer a glimpse into the exciting happenings in 

the field, motivating students and offering 

insights into the industry. My tour at Giraffe 

Foods was pivotal; listening to Melanie speak 

about innovation, team spirit, and growth 

opportunities at Giraffe Foods, made me 

realize my career aspirations. Now, being a 

part of the food industry, I’m certain I made 

the right decision.

Their comprehensive support system includes 24/7 

multilingual services for individuals in crisis or

Arts Etobicoke 

When a faculty member reached out to Rading, who was 

part of her professional network, the prospect of 

collaborating with the college on a project-by-project 

basis aligned with the organization’s needs. Centennial 

made it possible with STORYWORKS, a course that offers 

clients the opportunity to work with learners across 

Communications, Media, Arts and Design programs. 

Each student-client collaboration is unique, making the 

experience fully customizable. 

While organizations benefit from students’ keenness to 

succeed, students acquire much-needed portfolio pieces 

and the opportunity to apply their newly gained skills in a 

real-world setting. By seeing what actual clients require 

of them, they become better prepared to meet the needs 

of the industry once they enter the workforce. Rading 

says her staff takes pride in being able to mentor 

Centennial College students during their time at Arts 

Etobicoke.

“Sometimes, organizations worry about bringing on 

students because they think it means extra work for 

them,” says Rading, who collaborates with STORYWORKS 

students from the Arts Education and Community 

Engagement graduate certificate program. “That hasn’t 

been my experience at all. With a Centennial student, 

you’re getting a very strong candidate who is incredibly 

qualified and hardworking. They’ll take the task, run with 

it, and do a great job. From the feedback I receive, they 

are also gaining beneficial experience. It’s a win-win for 

everyone.” 

“Our staff is very supportive because there often isn’t 

much guidance for those just starting out in their 

careers,” she says of yet another of the benefits of 

collaborative partnerships. “I look back 20 years, when I 

returned to school to be able to complete job placements 

to enhance my resume. I saw the benefits personally 

then, and I see them now. That’s why I support such 

partnership opportunities.”

Collaborative partnership is a win-win for Arts 

Etobicoke and Centennial students 

At Arts Etobicoke, they believe in the transformative power 

of the arts to enhance lives and build a stronger 

community. As a not-for-profit charitable organization, 

their mission is to create an inclusive and creative hub for 

everyone in West Toronto. They are committed to 

providing equitable access to the arts, regardless of 

economic or social status. Everyone can freely express 

their art and culture through their vibrant programs, 

exhibitions, workshops, events, classes, and professional 

development opportunities. 

Centennial College collaborates with industry 

partners in numerous ways. The STORYWORKS 

course, which gives students the opportunity to 

work on real client projects, is just one example. 

Wendy Rading of Arts Etobicoke has benefitted 

from STORYWORKS and the knowledge of 

Centennial students for five years. 

Over the past five years, Centennial College 

students have injected energy into diverse 

projects at Arts Etobicoke, a not-for-profit 

charitable organization. Their contributions — from 

devising a volunteer program and crafting a fundraising 

strategy to overseeing a community mural — have helped 

propel the organization forward. Wendy Rading, Arts 

Etobicoke’s executive director, says she has come to rely 

on students’ expertise and unwavering enthusiasm. 

It's experiences like Rading’s that exemplify 

the distinctive benefits of collaborative 

partnerships with the college. 

“With not-for-profits, there are often really 

important projects that we don’t have the 

resources to undertake,” says Rading. “It’s so 

valuable to have someone dedicate specific 

time, knowledge, and energy into a program 

and build it out for us. We then have a 

template to work with, which is very helpful. 

What stands out is the calibre of students 

and their eagerness to do a good job.” 

Arts Etobicoke focuses on improving people’s 

lives through the arts. Serving West Toronto, 

the organization’s work branches off in three 

directions: education, community 

celebrations, and public art. This includes 

programs, exhibitions, workshops, events 

such as arts festivals, classes for participants 

of all ages, and professional development.

Professor Karen Shopsowitz, a 

distinguished faculty member at 

Centennial College, remembers the 

inception of ruudi productions vividly. 

She reflects, “when I first learned that 

my former students had established 

their own company, my reaction was 

perfect! It’s great knowing the 

students from our program have 

started their own companies and have 

had an opportunity to do work for the 

College, as a client.” This transition from students to 

entrepreneurs is a testament to the quality of

Karen adds, “Hedy has all the skills and the personality 

to do this and the same can be said for the classmates 

involved in the company. This is a company I will

Development Coordinator. Rachel shares 

her experience working with ruudi

partnerships. The work we did with ruudi 

focused on five esteemed partners of 

Centennial.”

a significant project that aimed to capture the essence

partners. Rachel Polsinelli explains, “ruudi productions 

handled the video production, capturing the essence of 

these collaborations and highlighting the impactful

resonated with our audience and celebrated the strength
