Tips for Assessing Your Home for Right-Sizing and Downsizing
As we age, our homes may no longer suit our changing needs. Whether
it’s unused rooms or overwhelming maintenance, downsizing. Rightsizing
can help create a more comfortable and manageable living
space. In his book *Keep the Memories, Lose the Stuff*, Matt Paxton,
host of *Legacy List with Matt Paxton* and star of A&E's *Hoarders*,
offers expert advice on how to declutter while preserving your
cherished memories.
# 1. **Assess Your Home’s Functionality**
Take a critical look at how you’re using your space. Are there rooms
that sit empty? Are there areas that you no longer enjoy or use as
much? Downsizing often begins with identifying spaces that no longer
serve a purpose and imagining a home that suits your current lifestyle,
rather than the one you had years ago.
# 2. **Prioritize Safety and Accessibility**
Aging often means rethinking comfort and accessibility in the home.
Consider whether your living space supports safe movement and daily
routines. Features like handrails, accessible showers, or one-floor living
may become more important. Right-sizing your home allows you to live
more comfortably and independently.
# 3. **Sort with Sentiment and Purpose**
There is an emotional aspect of downsizing. It's important to identify
which possessions hold genuine sentimental value and which items are
simply taking up space. Make decisions based on what truly adds
meaning to your life today.
# 4. **Pace Yourself**
Downsizing doesn’t have to be an overwhelming task. Give yourself
permission to take it one step at a time. Remember, it’s not just about
decluttering but about making thoughtful decisions that support a better
quality of life.
# 5. **Visualize Your New Space**
Right-sizing is an opportunity to embrace a simpler lifestyle,
keep in mind the vision of what your new, more manageable
living space will look like. Focus on
how this change will enhance your
daily life and more freedom to enjoy
what truly matters.
Home Safety
As we journey through life, our home becomes not just a place of
comfort but also a sanctuary where we cherish memories and find
solace. As we age, it's essential to ensure that our home remains a safe
haven, tailored to support our changing needs and abilities.
One of the most critical aspects of home safety for us seniors is
preventing falls. We understand the importance of maintaining
balance and stability, which is why simple adjustments like installing
grab bars in bathrooms and ensuring proper lighting throughout the
house can significantly reduce the risk of accidents. Let's take
proactive steps to secure rugs and carpets, declutter walkways, and
remove obstacles to create clear pathways within our homes.
Moreover, let's not hesitate to make necessary modifications to our
living spaces to enhance safety and accessibility. Consider handrails
on staircases, adjustable furniture for ease of movement, and non-slip
mats in the shower or bathtub. These adaptations promote safety and
also empower us to maintain our independence and comfort.
Additionally, let's embrace technology as a tool to ensure our wellbeing.
Medical alert devices and telecare services provide us with the
assurance that help is just a push of a button away in case of
emergencies. By leveraging these innovations, we can live with
confidence and peace of mind in our homes.
In conclusion, prioritizing home safety allows us to continue enjoying
the comfort and familiarity of our living spaces while navigating the
journey of aging gracefully. Together, let's create a home environment
that supports our well-being, independence, and cherished memories
for years to come.
Dear Readers,
Family is important, and my desire to help
provide generational wealth for my clients,
while making the transfer of property
smooth and stress free, has lead my career
to this.
I am thrilled to introduce our latest project,
the Senior Resource Guide. With over a decade
of experience as a Realtor specializing in Missouri rural properties, I've
witnessed firsthand the transitions families undergo, particularly as they
navigate the later stages of life.
Recognizing a gap in available resources for seniors and their families, I
became a certified Keller Williams Real Estate Planner in 2023. This led to
the creation of the first Senior Health Fair & Expo in Crawford County,
which has since expanded to Franklin County, boasting over 30 vendors and
invaluable resources.
The overwhelming success of these events inspired the creation of this Senior
Resource Guide. This comprehensive toolkit is designed to provide seniors
and their families with the guidance and support they need as they navigate
the complexities of aging. This Guide is in its baby steps, watch as we grow
our collection of resources!
I'm deeply grateful for the opportunity to serve our community in this
capacity and look forward to continuing our mission of empowerment and
support for seniors and their families.
Warm regards,
Pros and Cons of Passing Land to the Next Generation vs. Selling
Owning land can be a valuable asset, but deciding what to do with it as you
plan for the future requires careful consideration. Should you pass it on to
the next generation, or is selling a better option?
Passing Land to the Next Generation
Pros
*Legacy- Passing land down can create a meaningful family legacy. It ties
future generations to their roots, preserving f amily history and heritage.
*Long-term investment-If maintained, the land could appreciate in value
over time, potentially offering future financial stability for your heirs.
*Family Use- The land can be utilized for farming, recreation, or other
purposes, providing both sentimental and practical benefits.
Cons:
*Maintenance costs- Upkeep, taxes, and legal fees can be costly. The next
generation might struggle to afford these responsibilities.
*Lack of interest- Younger generations may not share the same connection to
the land, leading to neglect or eventual sale anyway.
*Family conflicts- Disputes over how to manage or divide the property may
arise, potentially causing tension among family members.
Selling the Land
Pros:
*Immediate financial gain- Selling provides an instant influx of cash, which
can be used to pay debts, invest elsewhere, or enjoy in retirement.
*Simplicity-Selling the land eliminates the ongoing responsibility of
managing, maintaining, and paying taxes on the property.
*Flexible options-You can sell to developers, conservation organizations, or
individuals, depending on your goals for the land’s future use.
Cons:
*Loss of legacy-Once sold, the land leaves the family, which may be difficult
for some to accept, especially if it holds sentimental value.
*Tax implications-The sale may trigger capital gains taxes or other financial
consequences.
*Market risks-If the real estate market is down, you might not get the value
you hoped for, potentially resulting in a financial loss.
Be sure you are talking with a qualified Realtor to get correct advice and
evaluations of your unique situation.
Understanding Insurance
Navigating the complexities of insurance options can seem daunting,
especially as we transition into our senior years. However, understanding
and selecting the right insurance coverage is essential for safeguarding our
health and financial well-being.
Let's consider Medicare, a federal health insurance program designed for
individuals aged 65 and older. Medicare provides coverage for essential
healthcare services, including hospital stays, doctor visits, and
prescription drugs.
Medicare—Part A (hospital insurance)
Part B (medical insurance)
Part C (Medicare Advantage)
Part D (prescription drug coverage)
is key to selecting a plan that meets our needs.
In addition to Medicare, we may also have the option to purchase
supplemental insurance, such as Medigap policies, to help cover out-ofpocket
expenses not covered by traditional Medicare. These can provide
additional peace of mind by filling gaps in coverage and reducing financial
burdens associated with healthcare costs.
Furthermore, let's explore long-term care insurance options, which can
help cover the costs of assisted living facilities, nursing homes, and inhome
care services not covered by Medicare or other health insurance
plans. Long-term care insurance provides financial protection and ensures
that we have access to quality care should the need arise in the future.
When evaluating insurance options, it's essential to consider factors such
as premiums, deductibles, co-payments, and coverage limitations. Let's
take the time to review and compare different plans, seeking guidance
from trusted insurance advisors or counselors who can provide
personalized recommendations based on our individual needs and
circumstances.
Understanding and selecting the right insurance options are crucial steps
in safeguarding our health and financial security as seniors. By exploring
Medicare, supplemental insurance, and long-term care options, we can
make informed decisions that provide peace of mind and ensure access to
quality healthcare when we need it most
Demystifying Elder Law: A Guide for Seniors
Elder law is a specialized branch of legal practice focused on
addressing the unique needs and concerns of seniors. It
encompasses various crucial areas such as estate planning, longterm
care, advocacy, and government benefits.
Here's a concise breakdown of what elder law entails and
why it's essential for seniors:
1. Estate Planning- Elder law attorneys assist seniors in drafting
wills, trusts, and advance directives to ensure their assets are
managed and distributed according to their wishes, even in cases of
incapacity.
2. Long-Term Care Planning- With the rising costs of nursing homes
and assisted living, elder law attorneys help seniors protect their
assets through Medicaid planning while still qualifying for
government assistance.
3. Advocacy and Protection- Elder law attorneys advocate for
seniors' rights, protecting them from abuse, neglect, and
exploitation, while also addressing issues related to Social Security,
Medicare, and other benefits.
4. Other Legal Issues- This includes guardianship, veterans' benefits,
housing, age discrimination, and end-of-life planning.
Seniors and their families are encouraged to seek qualified elder law
attorneys to address these crucial legal matters. By doing so, they
can navigate the complexities of aging with greater peace of mind,
ensuring their rights and interests are protected for the future.
The Rural Parish Clinic of the Archdiocese of St. Louis
extends the mercy of Jesus Christ to those who come to
us in need by providing the highest quality,
compassionate care rooted in the Roman Catholic
Church. Drawing from the legacy of the Rural Parish
Workers of Christ the King, the Rural Parish Clinic seeks
to meet the medical, dental, social, emotional, and
spiritual needs of uninsured residents regardless of
faith in rural Missouri.
The Rural Parish Clinic mobile medical and mobile
dental units serve rural uninsured residents aged 19-65
who meet income guidelines of less than 200% federal
poverty level. We target the working poor—those who
cannot afford insurance premiums or are laborers that
are not offered healthcare in their work or are selfemployed.
Rural areas have significantly less options
for free or reduced cost health and dental care.
