THE HONING STONE

Honing is the process of sharpening or polishing

a tool to make it more effective, acute, or

perfect. The honing process often uses a piece of

iron or steel to bring a knife edge into alignment;

honing does not remove material so much as it

shapes and refines. We believe that the honing

metaphor describes the coaching process: As iron

sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.

(Proverbs 27:17). The Honing Stone, LLC uses

coaching to improve individual performance and

organizational leadership skills. Coaching is a

process that involves a trusting relationship.

Much like honing, a coach uses open-ended,

empowering questions to help clients discover

what is within themselves. Coaching helps the

client examine their own thinking, perceptions,

values, and behaviors to develop the action steps

that are aligned with where the client wants to

go. A coach will ask questions we often avoid

asking ourselves. It is this process that helps

clients hone themselves to reach their full

potential.

• Are you ready to reach your potential?

• Do you want to achieve goals that you thought

were just out of reach?

• Do you want to become a new and better

version of yourself?

Call or visit us online to get more information

and schedule a complementary informational

session.

What Is Imposter Syndrome

Costing You?

By Lou Kelley

Recently, I met with a friend who has been working in her

profession for over 25 years. During our conversation, she told me

that she was dealing with Imposter Syndrome. You would never

know it from a casual conversation. After 25 years in her profession,

you would expect that she is calm and confident in her role, but quite

the opposite was true. My friend always felt just a few questions

away from someone calling her a fraud and having to admit that she

was not at the top of her game or not worth her salary. Through the course of the meeting, I learned

that this fear kept my friend from being the best version of herself. It kept her from taking informed

risks that might allow her to grow professionally. The Imposter Syndrome caused her to play it safe

and deliver good results but not the best possible results. Interestingly that was the third time I talked

with an accomplished professional who experienced Imposter Syndrome that week.

People who experience Imposter Syndrome may hold themselves to an unachievable standard of

perfection. They feel they do not deserve the position or the salary and frequently expect someone to

challenge their competency or to experience failure.

When someone experiences Imposter Syndrome, they may either over-prepare to the point of

becoming anxious, or be so riddled with fear they procrastinate to the point of being unprepared and

realizing their worst fears. Sometimes the person experiencing Imposter Syndrome will deny their

competency and abilities, attributing their success to luck. In the case of some minorities, their

minority status may lead them to believe they are do not deserve the position, praise, or respect they

have earned.

One form of Imposter Syndrome is the fear of success. The individual believes that achieving a

new level of performance will lead to higher expectations, leading to more stress and a greater sense

of potential failure. In essence, the people experiencing Imposter Syndrome hold themselves back so

that future expectations will not be excessively stressful or unachievable.

While having aspirational goals is a wonderful way to motivate improvement, if those aspirations

become the standard for success, an individual may never experience success. They may live in an

environment of self-induced anxiety. It is important to push yourself, but consistent unmet

expectations will have a detrimental effect.

Imposter Syndrome will often prevent leaders from performing at their best. When a leader is

insecure, they focus on so many little details they become a micro-manager or so afraid of being

called a fraud the leader checks out and is aloof or disconnected. A leader experiencing Imposter

Syndrome may not listen to advice or ask for help out of fear of appearing weak or unfit for the

position. These fears prevent leaders from making the best decision because they do not use all the

information available to them. Another consequence of Imposter Syndrome is leaders will be riskaverse

and play it safe. What opportunities have you missed because of Imposter Syndrome?

What can someone do to deal with Imposter Syndrome? Consider working with a credentialed

coach to get over the mental blocks that are holding them back. Reflective journaling helps people

process their thoughts and reach clarity for the challenges they face. Learning from failure rather than

dwelling on it is a critical skill. If you are not making mistakes, you are not pushing yourself. Try to

take informed risks, be transparent, and learn from your mistakes. Ask for input from team members

and mentors. People make their best decisions by taking in the perspectives of many and then

formulating a decision. Soliciting input creates buy-in and builds loyalty.

Most people suffer from some form of Imposter Syndrome from time to time. Don’t let Imposter

Syndrome stop you from taking action, let it motivate you to do your best and be willing to take

informed risks.

Lou Kelley is the owner of THE HONING STONE LLC. He is a retired Marine, husband to an amazing

wife, and the father of three wonderful adult children. Lou has had his bouts of Imposter Syndrome.

Millions for Mary,

Our Nation’s Founding Mother

by Jenna Edwards

The City of Fredericksburg is home to the Mary Washington Monument,

widely considered the nation’s first monument funded and erected by women, for

a woman. A $1.6 million campaign is underway to care for this respected

property and to enshrine its relevance and accessibility for future generations.

Mary Ball Washington was a resilient, courageous, and trailblazing woman

who defined life on her own terms. Orphaned as a child and widowed at age 35

as a single mother of five in the mid-18th century, Mary used these experiences

to deepen her strength and integrity. Upon her husband’s death, Mary did not

remarry, as was customary at the time; instead, she assumed sole management of

the family farm and protected her children’s inheritance. Her eldest son and our

nation’s first Commander-in-Chief, George Washington, often credited Mary for

his uncompromising character.

In 1789, Mary died at age 80 due to breast cancer; despite familial and

public desire to honor her legacy, however, fruition was delayed by challenges of

the post-Civil War landscape. Relic hunters and wartime damage destroyed both

the memorial stone George had ordered for his mother, as well as the 1833

cornerstone that preceded today’s monument.

In the 1890s, two women’s groups – the local Mary Washington Monument

Association and the National Mary Washington Memorial Association – worked

together to design and fund a monument memorializing America’s First Mother. In

1893, the cornerstone was laid, with fundraising support from the Daughters of

the American Revolution. In May 1894, amid great fanfare, the monument that

can be seen today was dedicated. On Mother’s Day 1954, President Dwight

Eisenhower laid a wreath to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Mary

Washington Monument.

Responsibility for managing and maintaining the Mary Washington

Monument has changed hands in subsequent years. In 1966, the two

organizations that worked tirelessly to build the Monument agreed to deed the

property and its environs to the City of Fredericksburg.

In January 2023, Washington Heritage Museums (WHM) engaged with the

City to write a new chapter for the Mary Washington Grave and Monument and

its associated features – Meditation Rock, Eskridge Oak, Gordon Cemetery, and

the Caretaker’s Cottage. The City transferred the property, by deed of gift, to

Washington Heritage Museums. Since 1900, guests from across the nation and

around the world have visited the Mary Washington House, and later, additional

18th century Washington Heritage Museum properties. The interpretations

presented at these museums convey the role that Fredericksburg and its people

played in the life of George Washington, his family, and his contemporaries.

Washington Heritage Museums' vision includes a thorough interpretation

of the sites through both interior and exterior improvements and preservation.

WHM proposes to interpret Mary Washington's life and death and the remarkable

history of the Monument’s creation. A new small, self-guided museum in the

Connecticut Room of the Caretaker’s Cottage would be open most weekdays,

when administrative staff are present on-site, looking after the property. Through

improved access, including ADA compliant pathways, and increased

interpretation, more visitors will have a new opportunity to learn about the life of

the mother of our first president, and the tremendous efforts that were brought

forth by many people throughout history to honor her.

Pledge your support for this monumental vision and for WHM’s

stewardship of this important national symbol. Gifts of all levels are needed and

appreciated. WHM is funded by museum admissions, grants, memberships,

sponsorships, and donations. WHM does not receive ongoing city, state, or

federal funding. Please call Anne Darron, 540-373-5630, to further the

presentation and interpretation of the Mary Washington Monument grounds and

associated sites. You may also contribute via the WHM secure donation site,

www.bit.ly/marywashingtomonument. Your partnership is critical to the success

of this campaign.

“We need to ensure this site and its place in the history of Fredericksburg

and our nation are preserved for generations to come. Mary Ball Washington’s

story is invaluable to our nation’s history and the formative role that women

played in the creation of our nation,” Chuck Fennell, Chairman of the WHM

Board of Directors, says, “We endeavor for all who visit the Mary Washington

Monument site to leave with a clear appreciation and understanding of America’s

First Mother.”

Kindness: It Starts With You

by John F. Gillespie, Jr.

Photo by Ditto Bowo on Unsplash

Kindness might just be the most beneficial

contagion you can spread. While it can certainly

brighten someone else’s day, the greatest benefit

of being kind is the positive impact it has on you.

For this article, let's define kindness as more

than just a simple act; it’s a way of life and a state

of being. Most of us like to think we’re kind, but

can we do better? Absolutely! And as we uplift

the world, we uplift ourselves too.

Think about it: it’s often easier to react with

anger because it takes no effort. When

something goes wrong, slipping into frustration

or negativity is the default response. However,

choosing to be kind requires intention and

strength. That’s where true power lies.

HOW CAN WE BE KINDER?

Start by changing your perspective. Imagine driving when another car cuts you off. It’s easy to

get angry and think, “What’s this person doing? Are they trying to cause an accident?” But

remember, we’ve all made mistakes behind the wheel, and most of us didn’t mean any harm.

Instead of reacting with anger, try to imagine that the driver is someone you care about—

maybe even a young person driving alone for the first time, feeling nervous and overwhelmed.

Shifting your thoughts in this way can help you move from frustration to compassion. One of

the things I do is give away a few flowers from each bouquet I purchase and it is amazing how

much that simple act can make a big impact.

It’s Not Always Easy, But It’s Worth It

Let’s be real—being kind isn’t always easy, and I still find myself getting upset sometimes. But

with practice, I’m getting better at it. The real challenge is to become aware of our immediate

reactions and actively shift our thoughts from judgment and frustration to compassion and

understanding.

Become a Kindness Warrior

Want to make a difference? Start by becoming a Kindness Warrior, spreading kindness one act

at a time. You may not see the direct impact of your kindness right away, but it’s there. Your

simple act might brighten someone’s day, and that positive energy can ripple out in ways you

never expected. You never know what someone else is going through, so why not add to their

happiness rather than their burdens?

Spread the Kindness Movement (#3120AOK)

Share your acts of kindness and inspire others to do the same. Use the hashtag #3120AOK,

which represents the approximate number of weeks in an average American adult’s life.

Imagine if you committed to just one act of kindness each week, starting at age 18—you’d

complete 3,120 acts of kindness (AOK) in your lifetime. Think of the world we could create with

that kind of effort!

Let’s make kindness our default setting and change the world,

one thoughtful act at a time.

FULL PLATES, FULL LIVES:

Fredericksburg Regional

Food Bank’s Vision to Reduce

Hunger in Our Community

One in six Americans struggle with hunger. Chances are you know someone—a family

member, coworker, veteran, or friend—who needs help.

The Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank (FRFB) is the largest organization in the Central

Rappahannock River Region working to solve hunger. We do this by partnering with 235

community organizations operating 338 food assistance programs in Caroline County, the City

of Fredericksburg, King George County, Locust Grove, Spotsylvania County, and Stafford

County - and distributing food directly into hard-to-reach areas. Last year, the FRFB helped

more than 46,000 people access healthy food. That's 11% of our region's mothers, fathers,

sons, daughters, sisters, brothers, and grandparents.

The Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank's mission is to unite the Central Rappahannock River

Region in a commitment to reduce hunger and limit food insecurity. Food insecurity is defined

as a lack of consistent access to enough food for every person in a household to live an active,

healthy life. It can be a temporary situation or last a long time, and is one way we can measure

the number of people who cannot afford food. According to the most recent Feeding America

Map the Meal Gap study, 9% of our community's residents face food insecurity. Through local

partnerships, mobile distributions, innovative programs including summer nutrition and

OrderAhead, and large-scale events such as Turkeys and Toys, we distribute food to our

neighbors in need through the tireless efforts of our staff and loyal volunteers.

The Food Bank works to adapt to the community's needs. While meeting hunger needs, we

also aim to educate and provide resources regarding physical and mental health, financial

wellness, and employment. The FRFB seeks to lead our neighbors through our Healthy Pantry

Initiative, promoting health equity by prioritizing

access to nutritious and culturally responsive food,

catalyzing cross-sector partnerships, and creating a

culture and system that supports a more equitable

and just society.

The holiday season is full of the hustle and bustle of trying to find just the right gift and the planning of

family gatherings. At the end of the season, we find ourselves exhausted and overwhelmed and struggling to

find the joy of the season. What we remember the most from the holidays are usually the times that we spent

with family and friends. For families trying to navigate a pediatric cancer diagnosis, time with their child is

even more precious.

“The first thing that comes to mind with FGP is love. Unconditional Love. We are kinda stubborn. We

thought we didn’t need help. We’ve got this. We had good doctors. We can do this on our own. I mean little

did we know what we needed until they stepped in. One thing Fairy Godmother Project gave us was time.”

A cancer diagnosis produces feelings of fear and a sense of overwhelm. A parent can feel worried about being

able to care for their child’s extensive needs, concern about financially being able to afford the necessary

treatment, and unsure if they are making the right choices. They also are afraid that their child may not get

better or if they do get better, then they will always struggle with the after effects of cancer and its treatment.

The one thing that they do feel sure about is that they want as much time with their child as possible. This is

where Fairy Godmother Project (FGP) comes in. Our mission is to take away the day-to-day responsibilities and

stressors, so the family can have more precious time together with their child. It can be as simple as a homecooked

meal ready after a long day at the hospital or someone mowing your grass or raking leaves, or even

helping to pay an unexpected bill. All these things are every day and mundane, but they just add to the stress

that the family is experiencing as they face pediatric cancer. With FGP, families receive the support of a caring,

lead volunteer, access to community resources, connections to our community through monthly care

packages, and peer support through monthly support groups. Cancer is a journey and like most journeys in

life, having the right help, guidance and support can make all the difference on how that journey goes and the

long-term effects of it on each family member.

“FGP gave us more time to spend on family fun as opposed to time spent on life's daily chores. We also

greatly appreciated the financial help that FGP provided through gift cards for groceries and gas. It helped to

offset other financial burdens we had during my daughter’s treatment.”

FGP supports families throughout our area (Fredericksburg, Caroline, King George, Spotsylvania,

Stafford, Northern Neck, and northern Orange County). All of our services are free and are provided through

the generous support of community members just like you. We support families socially, emotionally, and

financially. Families receive social support through our annual wellness retreats, monthly support groups, and

quarterly family fun events. Emotional support is provided through our lead volunteer program, counseling,

and community care packages. Families receive financial support through our monthly gas and grocery gift

cards, assistance with house cleaning and lawn care, twice a year bill pay assistance, family meals and snacks,

crisis fund, and AAA Roadside Assistance membership. Cancer isn’t a short journey. The average length of time

in active treatment for our families is 24.5 months and FGP makes a commitment to our families to provide

support for them from diagnosis, through treatment, and through their first year of remission and into

survivorship. FGP is also there for families who enter hospice and are with them through end of life and

beyond. For more information, check out our website at https://www.fgpinfo.org/.

So what can you do?

If you know of someone whose child has a cancer diagnosis, reach out and lend support, listen without

judgment, and help however you can. It’s really the simple things that can make such a huge difference: deliver

a healthy family meal, offer to mow their grass, run errands for them, help with childcare, so the parents can

go to appointments without siblings attending, pick up groceries, or even provide respite for the parent.

HOW YOU CAN HELP:

1) Connect families facing pediatric cancer with FGP by sharing our website:

www.fgpinfo.org/become-fgp-family/

2) Share your time and talents by volunteering. www.fgpinfo.org/get-involved/

3) Support FGP by donating. www.fgpinfo.org/donate/

4) Plan a fundraiser to support FGP programs

5) Sponsor a family for the holidays or provide monthly community care packages.

TREES AND THE VISITOR

EXPERIENCE

By Erik F. Nelson

Fredericksburg’s historic district includes buildings dating from the colonial period to the

modern day, a tangible reflection of the city’s history. Handsome neighborhoods branch off

from the downtown core. Beyond the urban blocks are additional prominent homes. One of

these is a two-story frame dwelling called Federal Hill, built in 1795 by Robert Brooke,

Governor of Virginia. It is a well-known landmark on the Fredericksburg battlefield.

Other gentleman farmers built their homes on the hills overlooking Fredericksburg.

Across the valley from Federal Hill, William Barker constructed a brick home, around 1820, that

he called Brompton. On the high ground farther north, John Stansbury also built a new brick

dwelling that he called Snowden. Still farther north, on a promontory called Fall Hill, stands a

brick house named Fall Hill. Unlike the hilltop mansions to its south, Fall Hill had been

constructed in the 1770s.

These homes were not only highly visible but had spectacular views. Fall Hill, for

instance, overlooks the Rappahannock valley. The panorama looking downriver to

Fredericksburg, however, has become blocked by trees. Mature tree cover is highly desirable

for its substantial environmental benefits, but it can also obscure the historic context of historic

places.

Construction also blocks once open vistas. The old Idlewild mansion, built by William

Downman in 1859, had distinctive Gothic Revival features, such as steep roofs and elaborate

trim work. It stood south of the Plank Road (modern State Route 3) and drew the attention of

Civil War soldiers on that thoroughfare, surprised to see a Virginia manor house that reminded

them of New England. New shopping centers now stand between the old mansion and the

highway. Prosperous communities grow, which is a better trend than decline and poverty, but

open landscapes become part of the exacted price.

In the early 1970s, the National Park Service initiated a program to bring its battlegrounds

in Spotsylvania and Orange Counties back to their wartime appearance. During World War

Two, the armed forces grabbed most of the available manpower and local parks were not

sufficiently staffed to keep the open ground cleared. Before too long, trees had grown beyond

the size that a bush hog could handle, and vegetation hindering the ability of visitors to see

the battlegrounds became progressively worse.

The National Park Service staff used period maps to determine the extent of what had

once been open fields and began to reestablish the historically open ground. The initial

reaction to park rangers cutting down trees was one of shock and consternation. The visiting

public, however, enjoyed better interpretation of the land, and the once controversial concept

spread to other national parks.

Scene restoration was feasible for parks in a rural setting but dismantling a built

environment of post-war buildings is hardly beneficial to an urban community. What that

means is that while surviving buildings on battlefield terrain can be useful areas of

interpretation, the views from those vantage points usually cannot be regained.

42

Trees and buildings

now obscure what was

visible from Federal Hill in

May of 1863. The presence of

mature trees and handsome

dwellings are welcome

components of an attractive

community, but their

presence requires a bit of

forensic geography to

understand some of

Fredericksburg’s history.

The Union commander

on May 3 was Major

General John Sedgwick.

Under orders to get his Sixth

Corps to Chancellorsville, he

had developed a plan to punch

through the Confederate

position that had stopped the

Army of the Potomac cold

in December. Rather than

funnel his attacks toward

Marye’s Heights, as his

predecessor had done,

Sedgwick assaulted the

Confederate line across a

broad front.

The attacking columns

that participated in the second

battle of Fredericksburg

extended from the area south

of Hazel Run, where

Fredericksburg’s Battlefield

Federal Hill

Stately dwellings such as Snowden are

invariably viewed looking uphill

Industrial Park is located, to the area north of the Rappahannock Canal. A Union force would

still advance across the ground in front of Marye’s Heights, as had been attempted in

December, but they would be supported by columns on Hanover and William Streets.

Success on May 3, 1863 required close coordination, and that critical command and

control took place from Federal Hill. In 1863, Sedgwick could look across the open ground to

oversee his far-flung forces. His Union force overran the Confederate defenses in a matter of

minutes. A virtual tour on a handheld device such as a cell phone could one day show a

modern visitor what the Union commander saw from Federal Hill. When those blocked vistas

can be made virtually visible, it will open a whole new visitor experience.

Erik Nelson was a planner with the City of Fredericksburg for 32 years and is now a consulting urbanologist.

He holds a graduate degree in history from the University of California, Santa Barbara.

It seems documentary films are getting more popular with the technology swing that makes

everyone a film producer at one point or another. That was the premise that set me and a couple of

residents here in our Spotsylvania neighborhood off to make a documentary about bluegrass music in

Fredericksburg. Bluegrass has some elements of history that aligned with historic Fredericksburg, so we

got the ball rolling in April 2024.

One of the neighbors in the original discussion dropped out due to other commitments so there

was me, Mike Salmon, and a neighbor I had just met named Barbara Ucman, who had the summer off

from her job in the public schools, so we hit the ground running.

I have done a couple of documentaries over the last 10 years and won a couple of awards in

Fairfax County so this topic seemed plausible, especially since bluegrass music would function as a

soundtrack throughout the film. When a scene got too quiet, the bluegrass music filled the spot. I got

out my video equipment, bought batteries and plugged in chargers so the stage was set.

I sketched out a plan, we made some contacts and found that there was a "Bluegrass in the Burg'"

festival in early June. We contacted the organizers, got some complimentary passes, and showed up

with our cameras and microphones. It proved to be a good move for the film. We got interviews with

musicians, fans and event people that fit nicely to our storyline.

Looking around Fredericksburg, the University of Mary Washington is like the elephant in the room

because it is such a big player around town. Universities scream creativity so people were not surprised

when we explained the project. We reached out to the arts department and luckily found a professor

that also happened to be a bluegrass musician. We played email tag for a few days, coordinated

schedules, packed up our video equipment and showed up at his office at the right time.

The professor was not there so we set up anyways, and he showed up to see us with tripods and

cameras in his office. He was not that concerned, and the interview went on like clockwork. Another

music entity in Fredericksburg is Pickers Supply on Caroline Street, so after a couple of visits, we got an

interview with one of the family members that owns it, which turned out to be another golden moment.

I have two books about making a documentary film, and the information in the books came in

handy. One book, “The Shut Up and Shoot Documentary Guide,” by Anthony Q. Artis is a great “howto”

source and the other, “The Documentary Moviemaking Course,” by Kevin J. Lindenmuth was full of

information we needed. I bought both books at Borders Books before they folded – another victim of

the online world.

When doing something like this, some people that you talk to don't want to be in the actual film,

so they point you to other sources. Several people pointed to the Sunken Well Tavern who has a

bluegrass band on Sundays called the Wellbillies at no charge. We showed up with our cameras a couple

of times and got footage we needed. Luckily, the management had no problem with the cameras but

that could have been a problem. We were discreet too.

A couple of other places on the bluegrass circuit were mentioned too, such as the Colonial Tavern

and Highmark Brewery, which proved to be good too. In the meantime, we produced a loose marketing

plan which relied heavily on the cooperation of certain people, which has mostly worked out.

So, we had pictures, footage and a storyline which I edited together for Draft 1. Our draft went

through several iterations while we waited for the Porch Fest in August, another music event that

proved to be golden for interviews. We made the end date of September 1, and then pushed it out to

everyone we knew.

Now we have an appreciation for

bluegrass, filmmaking, documentaries,

and perseverance.

Empowering Personal Safety:

What Do You Carry for Personal Protection?

by Lori Knowles

In an unpredictable world, personal safety is a paramount concern for many individuals. Whether

navigating through city streets, traveling alone, or merely going about daily routines, being prepared for

unexpected situations can make a significant difference. Together we will explore a range of items and

strategies that people might consider carrying for personal protection, empowering them to take an

active role in their safety.

One of the most common choices for personal protection is the use of self-defense tools. These can

include items such as pepper spray, personal alarms or whistles, stun devices, and even firearms.

Pepper spray: a non-lethal aerosol spray containing MC (Major Capsaicinoids), can incapacitate

an attacker temporarily, providing an opportunity to escape. Some have a UV dye that will “mark” the

attacker for later identification. Spray and get away!

Personal alarms: emit a loud sound, up to 120 decibels, when activated, serving both as a

deterrent and a means to attract attention. A whistle is a low-tech but reliable personal protection device.

Its loud and piercing sound can deter potential attackers and attract the attention of nearby individuals,

acting as a call for help.

Stun devices: while more intrusive, can immobilize an assailant by delivering an electric shock.

When shopping for a stun device be sure to look at the milliamps delivered NOT the voltage. The higher

the mAmp the stronger the stun device. Also, look for a device with a disable pin so if it’s taken away

from you, it can’t be used against you. Stun and run!

In the age of smartphones, technology plays a pivotal role in personal safety. Numerous apps are

designed to enhance individuals' safety by providing quick and easy ways to call for help or alert friends

and family in case of an emergency. These apps often include features like real-time location sharing,

emergency contact alerts, and even direct connections to local emergency services.

Before relying solely on an app, it is important to consider factors such as battery life, network

coverage, and the reliability of the app in various situations. While these apps can be valuable tools, they

should complement, not replace, traditional forms of personal protection.

For individuals in regions where it is legal and after obtaining the necessary permits, carrying a

firearm is a personal protection option that comes with significant responsibility. A firearm, when used

properly and responsibly, can be a powerful deterrent and tool for self-defense. However, it requires

extensive training, a deep understanding of local laws, and a commitment to safety. Understanding the

legal and ethical implications of firearm use is paramount. Carrying a firearm is a personal choice that

demands a serious commitment to safety and adherence to all relevant regulations. Not all self-defense

situations are “firearm worthy”.

While physical tools are important, personal safety extends beyond the items one carries. Engaging

in self-defense training or martial arts not only equips individuals with practical skills but also boosts

confidence and situational awareness. Many communities offer self-defense classes tailored to different

skill levels and personal preferences. Local law enforcement departments also may offer the Rape

Aggression Defense (RAD) course. This course is highly recommended for all women and teenage girls.

Training should include techniques for physical self-defense, mental preparedness, and strategies

for avoiding potentially dangerous situations. Developing the ability to assess and respond to threats is

a proactive approach to personal safety that goes beyond relying solely on tools or technology.

In any personal protection strategy, cultivating awareness of one's surroundings and maintaining

open communication with friends and family are fundamental. Being alert to potential risks allows

individuals to make informed decisions about their safety. This includes avoiding poorly lit areas, taking

well-traveled routes, and staying aware of local news and safety alerts. Pay attention to your “gut”, if

something doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t.

Personal protection is a multifaceted endeavor that requires a combination of tools, technology, and

personal awareness. The items one chooses to carry for personal safety should align with individual

comfort levels, legal considerations, and the specific contexts in which they are likely to be used. Whether

it is a self-defense tool, a smartphone app, a firearm, or basic training in personal safety, the goal is to

empower and educate individuals to take an active role in their own security, fostering a safer and more

confident community.

WINERIES & BREWERIES

C

1781 BREWING CO.

Our Mission to create truly distinct farmhouse ales

and lagers on our Virginia farm, Reap what you Sow,

sustainability at 1781 Brewing Co, means leaving

little to no trace and replacing our carbon footprint in

meaningful ways. We are continually listed as a

Corporation for Conservation by Ducks Unlimited and

other nonprofits. In 2017, 1781 Brewing Co.

contributed to help conserve over 248,000 acres of

wetlands which are the most at-risk ecological

systems. We also are involved in several USDA

environmental programs for wetlands and forest and

maintain 60 acres of deciduous forest and buffer

zones for the Chesapeake Bay Watershed. All 1781

Brewing Co.'s spent grains and brewery refuse goes

to either compost for our vegetable garden or to

another local farmer, Todd Schlund for his Pork

production.

WILDERNESS RUN VINEYARDS

Wilderness Run Vineyards began as a twinkle-in-theeye

of Robert and Denise Pagan as they looked

across the farm they had raised their family upon.

With the help of their son Harry and lifelong friend

Brandon (and many others), they started reclaiming

what were once dairy pastures and began planting

long rows of vines. After seeing the fruits of their

labor and all of the natural beauty of the property,

they decided what they had built must be shared.

Wilderness Run Vineyards has continually set goals

for the growth of the vineyard and farm. Every year

they have planted an average of an acre of new

grapes. The addition of 1781 Brewing Co. on the farm

has added to a variety of new beverage options for

patrons. The combination of vineyard and brewery

located on their historic property has allowed them

to holdfast to ethos; making the most out of time

with family, serving patrons as they are our family

and giving back to the community.
