Pet therapy programme 

A PET THERAPY programme 

is bringing smiles and sparking 

conversation at care homes. 

Run by Dogwatch Sanctuary 

Trust, the programme brings 

ex-Dogwatch dog River to the 

homes, providing residents with 

companionship. 

The programme has been 

running at Essie Summers and 

Cashmere View Retirement 

Village since August, receiving 

positive feedback. 

Many residents have been 

reminiscing about their own 

pets and enjoying the emotional 

connection. 

“I just love seeing River; she 

reminds me of my dogs, and 

it brings back so many happy 

memories,” said Eleanor, a 

resident at Essie Summers. 

A lifelong dog lover, Eleanor 

has missed the companionship 

of dogs while living in a 

retirement home. River’s visits 

have helped fill that void. 

River, a huntaway-border 

collie cross, was adopted from 

Dogwatch in 2022 and has 

quickly become a favourite at 

the care homes. 

But River’s journey to 

Dogwatch wasn’t an easy one. 

She was found wandering the 

streets of Bromley, severely 

underweight, by the city council 

animal management team. 

After remaining unclaimed 

at the council pound, she was 

transferred to Dogwatch, which 

rehomes dogs left at pounds or 

brings paw-sitivy

initially struggled with the 

shelter, barking frequently out 

of distress. 

But when she met her new 

family, her true personality

“River came straight up to us 

when we met her at Dogwatch, 

wanting love and pats,” said 

Amelia, her adopter. 

“She has been the best dog 

and slotted into our lives effortlessly.” 

The pet therapy programme 

is part of Dogwatch’s 

commitment to give back to 

the community.

celebrating a big milestone today. 

Risingholme Community Centre 

(now Risingholme Learning) 

is marking its 80th anniversary 

just in time for the Christchurch 

Heritage Festival with a special 

function and panel unveiling to 

showcase its rich history as a place 

of learning in the city. 

Director Lynda Megson said 

the event caps off 

a year of festivities 

for the organisation 

and includes 

events like ‘Have 

a Go Day’ which 

offered free course 

taster sessions to 

the public, and an 

art exhibition featuring 

works from 

Lynda

more than 50 tutors and learners 

at Risingholme. 

“Community is at the heart 

of who we are and what we do. 

When planning our big 80th we 

wanted to create collaborative 

events that showcase the wonderful 

work of the people who have 

helped Risingholme grow and 

thrive as an organisation.” 

Established in 1944, many of 

Risingholme’s early activities 

centred around informal clubs 

such as tramping and a Young 

People’s Club.

to make streets safer

council’s Way Safer Streets

work due to be funded by 

central Government via 

the Transport Choices 

programme.

available 

due to the

priorities.

UPDATE: A new plan for 

safety improvements 

across Bromley has been 

developed after funding for 

planned upgrades was cut. 

Community Board to see how 

we can utilise the funds we 

do have to help create safer 

and more accessible streets in 

the Bromley area.” 

The updated safety 

proposal includes making 

improvements to Keighleys 

and Bromley Rds. 

“As well as these revised 

proposals, we are still 

considering additional things 

that we could do to improve 

safety in Bromley and will 

consult on these at a later 

stage,” Bradbury said. 

On Keighleys Rd, the city council is considering: 

• Installing nine speed humps, between Keighleys/ 

McGregors Rd intersection to 65 Keighleys Rd 

• Making an uncontrolled crossing point at Bromley 

School more accessible by cutting down the kerb 

and adding in tactile pavers in the existing kerb 

buildouts 

On Bromley Rd, the city council is considering: 

• Installing a speed hump at the Keighleys Rd 

entrance 

• Installing a pedestrian refuge island with updated 

crossing points, to make it easier for people to cross 

to the Bromley Community Centre, playground, and 

nearby bus stops 

• Installing two speed humps on the approaches to 

the pedestrian refuge island, requiring the bus stop 

on the community centre side to be moved further 

east 

• Removing about 15 on-street carparks on Bromley 

Rd to make room for the new pedestrian refuge 

island and to relocate the bus stop

Community spirit key to Risingholme

Megson said Risingholme’s 

longevity is a result of it 

continuing to respond to 

community needs. 

“We’re always developing 

new courses and partnering 

with organisations to deliver a 

programme that’s relevant and 

enjoyable. The content and scale 

of our courses has certainly 

changed over 80 years but the 

mission to promote community 

spirit remains the same.” 

This community spirit and legacy 

of learning has been captured 

in museum style panels which 

will be formally unveiled today in 

front of tutors, former staff, and 

community partners. 

Covering from 1864 to the 

present day, the panels explore 

Risingholme’s history from its 

time as a private residence to 

its transition into a community 

centre and a place of continuing 

education. They are on permanent 

display and can be viewed during 

office open hours.

president Damian Sims will lead 

the formalities. He hopes the 

panels will become a “touchpoint 

for people wanting to learn 

more about Risingholmeand the 

community of people behind it”.

Savour the fresh green flavours of spring 

Nigel Slater serves up a 

vibrant soup-stew with 

croutes and a dish of 

cheesy asparagus 

to put some tastes 

of spring on your plate 

Green vegetable stew, 

basil pesto toasts 

A soup-stew of spring vegetables 

and green herbs. Include green 

beans if you wish, cut into short 

lengths, or a last-minute addition 

of spinach leaves. If you have any 

basil paste left over, you can use 

it to toss with cooked pasta or to 

spread on cheese on toast. 

Ingredients 

Serves 4-6 

Ready in 75 minutes 

200g broad beans 

200g young leeks 

80g spring onions 

200g courgettes 

250g peas, shelled 

1 litre vegetable stock 

280g judion beans, canned or 

bottled, or haricot or flageolet 

For the croutes: 

1 small baguette 

1 clove garlic 

30g pine kernels 

40g basil leaves 

25g parmesan, finely grated, plus a 

little extra to serve 

About 100ml of olive oil, plus 

extra for making toasts 

Method 

• Bring a deep pan of water to 

the boil, then drop in the broad 

beans and let them cook for 5-6 

minutes until almost tender. 

Scoop the beans from the water 

with a draining spoon and drop 

them into cold water. 

• If you wish, pop the broad 

beans from their papery shells by 

squeezing between thumb and 

forefinger. 

• Slice the leeks into thick 

rounds, then wash very 

thoroughly in deep cold water. 

Thinly slice the spring onions. 

Warm a couple of tablespoons of 

olive oil over a moderate heat in 

a deep saucepan, then stir in the 

leeks and spring onions. Place 

a piece of baking parchment or 

greaseproof paper over the leeks, 

then cover with a lid. This will 

allow them to soften and steam 

without colour. 

• Let the leeks and onions 

cook for about 10 minutes, 

checking them every now and 

again to make sure they are not 

browning. Slice the courgettes 

into small, thick pieces. Remove 

the lid and parchment from the 

pan, then stir in the courgettes, 

broad beans and the peas and 

continue cooking. Pour in the 

vegetable stock and bring to the 

boil. 

• Rinse the jarred beans and 

add them to the soup, stirring 

gently. (They are tender and easy 

to break up.) Season generously 

with salt and black pepper. Let 

the soup simmer gently while 

you make the croutes. 

• First, make the pesto: peel 

the garlic clove and pound it 

with a little sea salt. Add the 

pine kernels and continue until 

you have coarse paste, then 

introduce the basil leaves and 

mash everything to a thick green 

mixture, introducing a little of 

the olive oil if it becomes stiff. 

Stir in the grated parmesan, then 

the remaining olive oil to make a 

spreadable paste. 

• Get an overhead (oven) 

grill hot. Slice the baguette into 

rounds, about 2cm thick. Place 

them on a grill pan or baking 

sheet and toast under the grill 

until golden. Turn them over and 

toast the other side, then remove 

from the grill and trickle with 

the olive oil. Spread generously 

with the paste. 

• Ladle the soup into bowls 

and float the basil croutes on top. 

Pass a dish of extra parmesan 

around as you serve. 

Asparagus, melted cheese 

Any soft, creamy-textured 

cheese that melts well will work 

here. A log of goat’s milk cheese, 

sliced into rounds, is particularly 

suited to melting under a hot 

grill. It is a good idea to protect 

the tips of the asparagus with 

foil before you put them under 

the grill, to keep them sweet and 

juicy. 

Ingredients 

Serves 2 

Ready in 20 minutes 

12 thick and juicy asparagus 

spears 

A little melted butter 

2 goat’s milk cheeses, about 120g 

each 

Method 

• Put a deep pan of water on to 

boil and salt it lightly. Trim the 

ends of the asparagus. When the 

water is boiling drop in the spears 

and cook for about 7 minutes, 

depending on their thickness. The 

spears should be cooked until they 

will bend slightly when pulled 

from the water. 

• Warm an overhead (oven) 

grill. Remove the asparagus from 

the water with kitchen tongs 

(draining them in a colander will 

damage the delicate tips) and lay 

them side by side on a grill pan. 

Brush lightly with butter. 

• Slice the cheeses in half 

horizontally and place them on 

top of the spears. Cook under the 

heated grill for a few minutes until 

the cheese melts.
