World Bank revises up<br />

global growth forecast for<br />

<strong>2024</strong><br />

GDP growth projected at 2.6% this year, 2.7% in 2025-26<br />

ANKARA – The World Bank revised the global growth forecast<br />

for this year to 2.6%, up 0.2 percentage point from its previous<br />

projection.<br />

The figure is foreseen to hold steady compared to last year for the<br />

first time in three years despite heightened geopolitical tensions<br />

and high interest rates, the bank said in its latest Global Economic<br />

Prospects report.<br />

The upward revision was led by continued solid growth in the US,<br />

it stressed.<br />

The bank forecast the gross domestic product (GDP) growth will<br />

edge up to an average of 2.7% in 2025-26 amid modest growth in<br />

trade and investment.<br />

The figure is below the 3.1% average in the decade before the<br />

pandemic or 2010-19.<br />

“Four years after the upheavals caused by the pandemic, conflicts,<br />

inflation, and monetary tightening, it appears that global economic<br />

growth is steadying,” said <strong>In</strong>dermit Gill, the World Bank Group’s<br />

chief economist and senior vice president.<br />

The GDP in developing economies are forecast to increase 4% on<br />

average in <strong>2024</strong>-25 and in advanced economies to hike 1.5% this<br />

year before rising to 1.7% next year.<br />

Gill underlined the need for developing economies to find ways to<br />

encourage private investment, reduce public debt, and improve<br />

education, health, and basic infrastructure.<br />

The report highlighted that one in four developing economies is<br />

expected to remain poorer than it was in 2019.<br />

The World Bank hiked its growth projection for China by 0.3<br />

percentage point to 4.8% this year, due to stronger-than-expected<br />

activity in early <strong>2024</strong>, particularly exports. The world’s secondlargest<br />

economy is projected to grow 4.1% in 2025, down 0.32 point<br />

from the January report.<br />

The GDP in the US is expected to increase by 2.5% this year and<br />

1.8% next year, with upward revisions of 0.9 point and 0.1 point,<br />

respectively.<br />

The euro area’s GDP growth is projected to come in at 0.7% in <strong>2024</strong>,<br />

the same as foreseen in the previous report, and 1.4% in 2025, a<br />

downward revision of 0.2 points.<br />

The Turkish economy’s growth forecast was cut by 0.1 point to 3%<br />

for <strong>2024</strong> and 0.3 point to 3.6% for next year.<br />

The World Bank projected the global inflation to average at 3.5%<br />

this year and 2.9% in 2025.<br />

Global interest rates are likely to remain high by the standards of<br />

recent decades -- averaging about 4% over 2025-26, roughly double<br />

the 2000-19 average, read the report.<br />

Istanbul Fair Center (IFM).<br />

Generated with the aim of creating<br />

strong Turkish brands that produce<br />

with original designs, FDI exhibits<br />

the aesthetic and innovative<br />

designs of the Turkish furniture<br />

industry. Furnishings & Design<br />

Istanbul, which includes the entire<br />

interior ecosystem, especially the<br />

fast-growing furniture sector, and<br />

focuses on value-added products,<br />

will contribute to Turkish furniture<br />

becoming a brand in the world. FDI,<br />

which will host brands of all sizes<br />

that produce products with original<br />

and qualified designs at the Istanbul<br />

Expo Center between September 19-<br />

21, will especially enable designers<br />

and visionary manufacturers to<br />

meet.<br />

Making a statement about<br />

Furnishings & Design Istanbul<br />

Fair and the importance of<br />

branding, Davut Karaçak, President<br />

of MOSDER, said; “With the<br />

breakthroughs we have realized<br />

as the furniture sector, we both<br />

contribute significantly to the<br />

national economy and we are<br />

rapidly moving towards the place<br />

we deserve worldwide. We are the<br />

world›s seventh largest furniture<br />

exporter with nearly 45 thousand<br />

manufacturers, 12 billion dollars of<br />

production and more than 5 billion<br />

dollars of exports. The technologies<br />

we use in furniture production<br />

in <strong>Türkiye</strong> can compete with the<br />

world, but they are not enough.<br />

More importance should be given<br />

to product design in the sector.<br />

For this, the necessary attention<br />

should be paid to the training of<br />

furniture designers. <strong>In</strong> addition,<br />

generating brand awareness is of<br />

great importance for the perception<br />

of ‹Turkish Furniture› in the world.<br />

I believe that Furnishings & Design<br />

Istanbul Fair will make a great<br />

contribution to us with this purpose<br />

and perspective. Only original,<br />

innovative designs will take place<br />

in the fair and products that do not<br />

meet the criteria determined by the<br />

FDI Design Committee will not be<br />

exhibited. <strong>In</strong> this fair, the design<br />

power and potential of the Turkish<br />

furniture industry will be revealed.”<br />

“We will increase our exports with<br />

our design and production power”<br />

Karaçak emphasized the importance<br />

of exports in the growth of the<br />

furniture sector, which has grown<br />

20 times in 20 years with exports to<br />

200 countries; “Our technology used<br />

in furniture production in <strong>Türkiye</strong><br />

is improving day by day and we are<br />

able to compete with the world. We<br />

are achieving significant success in<br />

exports, but we can do much better.<br />

The way to increase our exports is<br />

through value-added production.<br />

And of course, value-added<br />

production derives its strength<br />

from original design. Therefore, we<br />

should focus on qualified design,<br />

innovation and branding. <strong>In</strong> the first<br />

6 months of this year, we exported<br />

2 billion 183 million dollars. We<br />

can raise this figure much higher<br />

with value-added production. <strong>In</strong> the<br />

medium term, we have the goal of<br />

entering the top five and reaching 10<br />

billion dollars of exports in 2028. We<br />

believe that effective organizations<br />

such as the FDI Fair will make a<br />

significant contribution to achieving<br />

this goal. As sector players, we will<br />

reach our goal by strengthening<br />

each other in unity and solidarity.”<br />

<strong>In</strong>novative Areas<br />

Furnishings & Design Istanbul<br />

(FDI) features areas such as “FDI<br />

Stage”, “FDI D2B”, “FDI Design<br />

Houses” and “FDI New Horizon<br />

Exhibition” in addition to original<br />

design exhibition areas. <strong>In</strong>novative<br />

and pioneering design ideas, current<br />

insights reflecting the transformation<br />

of the industry and inspiring<br />

approaches will be discussed at FDI<br />

Stage, while designers and brands<br />

will hold bilateral meetings at FDI<br />

D2B. <strong>In</strong> the FDI Design Houses area<br />

of the fair, which will be generated<br />

around different themes with special<br />

curation, special products selected<br />

from the portfolios of participating<br />

companies and brands will be<br />

brought together. Within the scope<br />

of the organization, different design<br />

exhibitions will be held in the FDI<br />

New Horizon Exhibition area.<br />

<strong>In</strong> addition, the Onaranlar Kulübü<br />

(Repairers Club) will also design<br />

home decoration products from<br />

recycled materials exclusive to FDI<br />

and these products will be included<br />

in the Design House creation,<br />

offering visitors the opportunity<br />

to adopt and support a sustainable<br />

lifestyle.<br />

The awards of the ‘Crescents and Stars for Packaging Competition’ which is traditionally organized by the Turkish Packaging Manufacturers Association (ASD) for<br />

the 11th time this year found their owners. Speaking at the award ceremony and pointing out that <strong>Türkiye</strong> has great potential in terms of the packaging industry, ASD<br />

President Zeki Sarıbekir said, “Our industry has reached a point that is recognized worldwide by emphasizing innovation and design. Today, we celebrate the creative<br />

power, courage and vision of Turkish designers. Each finalist is the representative and source of inspiration for the ideas that shape the future of our industry.”<br />

The 11th ‘Crescents and Stars for<br />

Packaging Competition’ which<br />

is organized by the Turkish Packaging<br />

Manufacturers Association<br />

(ASD) this year found its<br />

winners. While 305 packages<br />

applied to the competition with<br />

a record participation, these packages<br />

were evaluated according<br />

to 11 criteria under 13 categories<br />

and 129 packages made it to the<br />

finals. While the interest in the<br />

competition from abroad has<br />

been increasing, 6 awards went<br />

abroad this year. Accredited by<br />

the World Packaging Organization<br />

(WPO) and the Asian<br />

Packaging Federation (APF), all<br />

the winners of the Crescents and<br />

Stars for Packaging Competition<br />

will be able to participate in the<br />

WorldStar and AsiaStar Competitions<br />

and represent <strong>Türkiye</strong> in<br />

the international arena.<br />

functionality, Zeki Sarıbekir<br />

Zeki Sarıbekir pointed out that<br />

the Turkish packaging industry<br />

has become globally recognized<br />

by emphasizing innovation and<br />

Sarıbekir stated that the contribution<br />

of the packaging industry<br />

to the Turkish economy, which<br />

has reached a market size of 28<br />

billion dollars by 2023, will continue<br />

to increase every year and<br />

that our country will maintain<br />

its position as the packaging center<br />

of Eurasia, and that the 29th<br />

Eurasia Packaging Istanbul Fair,<br />

which will be held on <strong>October</strong><br />

23-26 this year, will bring the<br />

entire packaging world together<br />

in Istanbul. Sarıbekir said, “Our<br />

fair, organized in cooperation<br />

with the Packaging Manufacturers<br />

Association and RX Tüyap,<br />

is supported by all packaging<br />

sector associations. Our fair has<br />

grown 40 times since its first day;<br />

last year, it reached 13 thousand<br />

foreign visitors from 130 countries<br />

and 75 thousand visitors in<br />

total. This year, we are expecting<br />

80,000 visitors, 15,000 of them<br />

from abroad. The intense interest<br />

in the fair, which increases every<br />

year, also shows how successful<br />

the packaging industry, which<br />

is positioned correctly with its<br />

price and quality, is following a<br />

Emphasizing that the packaging<br />

sector is also one of the most important<br />

export items of the Turkish<br />

economy and that the sector<br />

exported 3.3 billion dollars<br />

in the first half of the year, Zeki<br />

billion dollar target they set for<br />
