Healing Trauma with Crystals and Wiccan Beliefs
Trauma is a deeply personal experience that can often leave lasting
emotional, mental, and physical scars.
While traditional therapies and medical treatments are commonly sought
for healing, alternative practices such as the use of crystals combined
with beliefs such as Wicca offer unique pathways to recovery. These
practices emphasise personal empowerment, nature’s energy, and
spiritual healing, making them appealing to those seeking holistic
approaches to deal with trauma.
The Role of Crystals in Healing
Crystals are believed to carry unique energies and vibrations that can
influence our emotional and physical states. This enables us to use
different crystals to support healing by balancing the body’s energy and
alleviating negative emotions. Here are some ways crystals can aid in
trauma recovery:
Grounding and Protection: Crystals like black tourmaline and smoky
quartz are known for their grounding properties. They help anchor
individuals in the present moment, reducing anxiety and fear
associated with traumatic memories. Black tourmaline, in particular, is
believed to offer protection from negative energies, creating a safe
space for healing.
Emotional Healing: Rose quartz, often referred to as the "stone of
unconditional love," is used to soothe emotional wounds and foster
self-love and compassion. Amethyst, another popular crystal, is
known for its calming energy, which can help with insomnia, anxiety,
and overthinking—common issues for those dealing with trauma.
Enhancing Self-Awareness: Crystals like labradorite and clear quartz
are used to enhance self-awareness and intuition. They encourage
introspection, helping individuals understand the root causes of their
trauma and guiding them through the process of emotional release
and acceptance.
Wiccan Beliefs and Trauma Recovery
Wiccan beliefs are centred around nature, the
elements, and the cycles of the moon, all of which
are used to facilitate healing and transformation.
At the core of Wiccan practices is the belief in
personal empowerment and the ability to create
change in one’s life through intention, rituals, and
spells.
Here are some ways Wiccan beliefs can support
trauma recovery:
Rituals for Release and Renewal: Wiccan
rituals often involve symbolic acts that
represent releasing the old and welcoming the
new. For instance, during the waning moon,
rituals can be performed to let go of pain,
anger, or fear associated with trauma. These
rituals may include writing down feelings on
paper and then burning it as a way to
symbolically release those emotions.
Connection with Nature: Wicca places a strong
emphasis on connecting with the natural world.
Spending time outdoors, meditating in nature,
or working with elements like earth, air, fire,
and water can be incredibly grounding and
healing. This connection helps individuals feel
part of something larger than themselves,
providing comfort and a sense of belonging.
Empowerment Through Spellwork: Spellwork
in Wicca is less about supernatural intervention
and more about setting intentions and focusing
the mind on desired outcomes. Healing spells
can be used to invoke inner strength, courage,
and resilience. For example, a simple self-love
spell might involve lighting a pink candle,
surrounding oneself with rose quartz, and
reciting affirmations of worth and healing.
Alchemical Voice - L2M - Issue 29
Integrating Crystals and Wiccan Practices
To effectively use crystals and Wiccan beliefs for
trauma recovery, it’s important to approach these
practices with an open mind and heart.
Begin by choosing crystals that resonate with you,
and keep them close during meditation, sleep, or
daily routines.
Incorporate Wiccan rituals that feel meaningful,
and don’t hesitate to personalise them to suit your
needs.
Ultimately, the journey to healing is deeply
personal, and what works for one person may not
work for another.
Crystals and Wiccan practices offer a gentle,
nature-based approach to trauma recovery that
can complement traditional methods, providing
comfort, empowerment, and a renewed sense of
hope.
Healing Through Connection
Horses have long been revered across cultures for their
grace, strength, and spirit. From ancient myths to modern
therapy, these majestic animals have played a significant
role in human life, both practically and spiritually. In
recent years, there has been a growing recognition of the
profound therapeutic benefits of working with horses,
particularly in addressing mental health issues and
trauma. The unique qualities of horses creates a powerful
experience that can help individuals find healing,
strength, and a sense of inner peace.
The Spiritual Connection Between Humans and Horses
At the heart of the bond between humans and horses lies
a deep spiritual connection. Horses are highly intuitive
creatures that mirror human emotions and energy. This
mirroring ability allows them to sense and respond to a
person's emotional state, often acting as a nonjudgmental
reflection of one's inner world. It has often
been said that you cannot lie to a horse. Horses key
survival instincts rely on reading body language and as
such you can be completely honest, true and open in their
presence in a way that many can often not feel
comfortable being with people, this in itself can help aid
healing. This dynamic creates an opportunity for selfawareness
and personal growth, fostering a deeper
connection to oneself and one's emotions.
For many, the act of connecting with a horse can feel like
a spiritual experience. Being in the presence of such a
powerful yet gentle creature can evoke feelings of awe,
gratitude, and humility. Horses have a calming presence
that encourages mindfulness—being present in the
moment without judgment.
8

Alchemical Voice - L2M - Issue 29
This mindfulness is essential for individuals who have
experienced trauma or struggle with anxiety and depression, as
it helps them reconnect with their bodies and emotions in a
safe and supportive environment.
Equine-Assisted Therapy: Healing from Trauma
Equine-assisted therapy (EAT) is a growing field that harnesses
the therapeutic power of horses to help people heal from
trauma, mental health disorders, and emotional struggles. This
form of therapy involves various activities such as grooming,
feeding, and riding horses, guided by trained therapists who
facilitate the healing process. EAT has been shown to help
individuals build trust, improve communication skills, and
develop emotional regulation.
One of the unique aspects of EAT is that it provides an
opportunity for individuals to engage in a non-verbal dialogue
with the horse.
For those who have experienced trauma, words can often feel
inadequate or overwhelming. Working with horses allows them
to express emotions and work through feelings in a way that
feels safer and more manageable. The horses' consistent and
predictable responses can help individuals develop a sense of
safety, security, and trust — key elements in the healing
process.
Riding as Therapy: Benefits for Disabled Individuals
Horseback riding offers profound physical, emotional, and
psychological benefits for people with disabilities. Therapeutic
riding programs are designed to improve balance, coordination,
muscle strength, and flexibility. The movement of a horse's gait
closely mimics the human walking pattern, which can help
individuals with mobility challenges improve their balance and
motor skills.
Beyond the physical benefits, riding a horse can have a
transformative impact on mental health. For people with
disabilities, riding can offer a sense of freedom and
independence that may not be easily accessible in other areas
of their lives. The act of riding fosters self-confidence and a
sense of accomplishment, helping individuals overcome feelings
of limitation and helplessness. The bond formed with the horse
can provide emotional support and companionship, reducing
feelings of isolation and improving overall well-being.
Finding Healing and Hope with Horses
Working with horses offers a unique pathway to healing that
combines physical, emotional, and spiritual elements. Whether
through equine-assisted therapy or therapeutic riding, horses
provide a mirror to our inner selves, encouraging self-reflection,
awareness, and growth.
Their ability to connect deeply with humans creates a safe
space for healing, making them ideal companions in the journey
toward mental health and emotional resilience.
In essence, horses offer more than just physical support; they
provide an opportunity for individuals to connect with their
inner strength, rediscover joy, and find a renewed sense of
purpose.
WHAT COLOUR IS
A RED APPLE?
John Sjovik
Das Ding an sich
The attentive reader may have noticed that I have
mentioned the German philosopher Immanuel Kant in
some of my previous articles. Amongst many other things,
Kant is known for coining the phrase “das Ding an sich”,
which means “the thing in itself”.
A thing or object is what it is, regardless of being
observed, studied, interpreted or not. It is “das Ding an
sich”. This is called a “Noumenon”. However, as it appears
to us observing it, it is called a “Phenomenon”.
The relationship between noumenon and phenomenon has
been the subject of philosophical discourse during the last
200 years and I will stay well clear of that discussion.
What fascinates me here is the similarity to Shamanism. As I venture to see it, Phenomenon relates to
Noumenon a little bit like Ordinary Reality relates to Non-Ordinary Reality.
What matters most of the duality I mention above, is that both of the two aspects are real. None of them is
less or more valid in its own right. They do have different qualities and they manifest differently. Yet they are
realities to be explored and experienced.
As human beings, we are in a way prisoners of our five senses. Yet, many people seem happy with that. They
find a comforting predictability in observing the phenomena of nature and ignoring the hidden aspects of the
world around us.
However, if you reduce your experience of the environment you live into what you can feel, see, hear, smell
and taste, I maintain that you will only experience a mere fraction of the true and complete nature of the
realities that surround you.
Suppose there is a red apple on the table in front of you. When you look at it, you can see that it is red. Your
cat is sitting on your lap but she will not agree with you, because cats are unable to see the colour red. Their
eyes are not sensitive to light of that wavelength. So is the apple red or not? Well, it depends on who you ask;
you or your cat. What about the apple itself? “Das Ding an sich”? If there was no one there to see the apple,
would it still be red?
12

Alchemical Voice - L2M - Issue 29
Is it at all possible to create an objective understanding of reality, when we seem to influence the
phenomena when we observe them? Consider the limitations of our senses and the fact that we view the
world through a lens of already existing knowledge, preconceived ideas and even prejudice. When we
observe that which we call reality, we can only see it as it presents itself to us, in our twisted and subjective
version, and not how it actually is.
Since we seem to be unable to understand physical reality as it really is, then how difficult must it not be to
understand the non-physical realm? A scene from a film comes to mind. A Native American is about to give
witness in a court of law. He is asked to take an oath to tell the truth. He declines and explains that he can
only tell what he knows. Whether or not that is the truth is unknown to him.
Then what is reality?
As we have seen, we cannot even be certain that a red apple really is red. Based on our senses, we have a
subjective perception of reality. Yet, there is a much deeper, transcendent and fundamental reality that lies
beyond anything that we humans can fathom with what we know and what we have experienced. It is as if
phenomena and noumena are separate aspects of reality.
Take a look at the figure below. I have marked an area, where there is an alchemical overlap of phenomena
and noumena. This is where even a self-proclaimed nonbeliever in spirituality will still be able to sense an
additional, extra-sensory aspect of the world around him.
The shamanic practitioner travels between worlds, between Ordinary Reality and Non-Ordinary Reality. In
some ways, those worlds or realities can be compared to Phenomena and Noumena, as in the figure above.
In shamanism, a lot of important work is done in the shadowed area in the above figure, where the two
worlds overlap. Sometimes, and in some places, the veils are thin, and also people with no experience with
shamanism can pick up the presence of another dimension, as a consequence of the duality of the ordinary
and the non-ordinary.
This is where physics and metaphysics meet, where philosophy and spirituality join hands. Human senses,
perception, beliefs, theories and science are merely tools for our often futile attempts at understanding and
describing the world we live in, the ground under our feet and the stars above our heads.
At the end of the day, “das Ding as sich”, the thing itself, is what it is, whatever it is. We ought to sit back in
awe for a moment and feel gratitude and joy in being part of the great mystery, of something that is larger
and more profound than we can ever imagine.
Remember that the bits and pieces that constitute our bodies are the same as the glowing stars in the night
sky. We are indeed stardust.
PISTIS SOPHIA
Julie de Vere Hunt
Pistis Sophia (‘faith-wisdom’) was the most significant text
to have surfaced prior to the Nag Hammadi discovery in
1945, discovered in Upper Egypt in the late 18th century. A
simpler, shorter version of Pistis Sophia was later found at
Nag Hammadi.
Pistis Sophia is written in mythological form as it is
describing concepts beyond language. There are simply no
words to describe the divine realms.
A myth is more than a story, it is a statement made in
symbols. A symbol speaks to the soul, even when the mind
does not understand. When a symbol touches the soul,
there is a change, whether you are conscious of it or not.
Like the Gospel of Mary, Pistis Sophia takes place after the
resurrection and features Mary Magdalene in a prominent
role, revealing a deep spiritual relationship between Mary
Magdalene and the Saviour.
The text relates that the Saviour remained on earth for 11
years after the crucifixion to instruct the disciples (including
his mother Mary, Mary Magdalene, Mary Salome and
Martha), teaching them only the lower mysteries. After 11
years, the Saviour receives his true garment and is able to
reveal the higher mysteries. These mysteries relate to
complex cosmologies and knowledge necessary for the soul
to reach the highest divine realms.
To the Gnostics, Sophia was a divine syzygy (pair of
connected things) of the Saviour; in a papyrus codex found
at Nag Hammadi the Saviour explains Pistis as follows;-
“Again, his disciples said: ‘Tell us clearly how they came down
from the invisibilities, from the immortal to the world that
dies?’
The perfect Saviour said: ‘son of Man consented with Sophia,
his consort, and revealed a great androgynous light.
14

Alchemical Voice - L2M - Issue 29
Its male name is designated ‘Saviour, begetter of all things’. Its
female name is designated ‘All-begrettress Sophia’. Some call
her ‘Pistis’.”
The translation I have by G.R.S Mead divides the text into
six books (books 5 & 6 did not exist in the original
manuscript).
Over half the text is dedicated to the myth of the fall and
restoration of the figure known as Pistis Sophia, giving
detailed parallels between her prayers of repentance and
Psalms and Odes of Solomon.
In the first book (Chapters 1-62) the disciples believe they
have progressed far along the path of gnosis, announcing:
“Blessed are we before all men who are on the earth, because
the Saviour hath revealed this unto us, and we have received
the Fullness and the total completion.”
However, the disciples are mistaken. Light descends over the
Saviour, which “Stretched from under the earth right up to
heaven. – And when the disciples saw that light, they fell into
fear and great agitation.”
Upon his return, the Saviour, seeing their fear and agitation
reassures them. He informs them,
“I have gone to the regions out of which I had come forth. From
this day on I will discourse with you in openness, from the
beginning of the Truth unto its completion.”
A lengthy narrative the Saviour relates concerning his
journey ‘upwards and inwards’ and of his receiving a
garment of light. He travels through the heavenly spheres,
revealing the existence of the First Mystery – the true God
– to the rulers of the spheres and their attendant angels.
When he reaches the twelfth sphere, he encounters
‘Adamas, the Great Tyrant’, who tries to resist the light and,
along with the Archons, fights against it.
The Saviour relates,
“And I took a third of their power, in order that they should not
be able to accomplish their evil deeds.. Who hath ears to hear,
let them hear.”
This can be interpreted as the Saviour reducing the
effectiveness of astrological magic.
15

16

Alchemical Voice - L2M - Issue 29
Mary Magdalene meditates for an hour and then asks to
speak. The Saviour’s reply shows the esteem in which he
holds her:
“Mary, thou blessed one, whom I will perfect in all mysteries of
those of the height, discourse in openness, thou, whose heart is
raised to the kingdom of heaven more than all thy brethren.”
Mary interprets the Saviour’s narrative, describing how
Isaiah prophesied what he has told them, then she begins to
ask various questions. The only male disciple to quiz the
Saviour is Philip, who has been transcribing the Saviour’s
words.
Mary is taking the lead in asking the Saviour to explain
himself further, showing she is actively assimilating the
Saviour’s teachings, more so than the other disciples.
The Saviour continues his discourse, revealing that he
encountered Pistis Sophia
“grieving and mourning, because she had not been admitted
into the thirteenth aeon, her higher region.”
Unlike the version of the Sophia myth in the Secret Book of
John, here Pistis Sophia is a being of the lower, material
aeons. She is not a high, divine being, and her restoration is
not to the realms of light, but only back to her place in the
thirteenth aeon. Her longing for the first Mystery – the true
God – led to her being tricked out of the thirteenth aeon by
the great triple-powered ‘Self-Willed’, who together with
other aeons, project their own light downwards.
Pistis Sophia mistakes this light for the light of the First
Mystery, heads towards it and becomes entrapped in the
world of chaos and matter.
She meets Yaldabaoth (the Demiurge), who strips her of her
remaining power. Pistis Sophia begins to sing hymns of
repentance (there are 13 in all):
“Now, therefore, O Light of Truth, thou knowest that I have
done this in my innocence, thinking that the lion-faced light
power (Yaldabaoth) belonged to thee; and the sin which I have
done is open before thee.
Suffer me no more to lack, O Lord, for I have had faith in thy
light from the beginning; O Lord, O Light of the powers, suffer
me no more to lack my light.
And because of the illusion of thy light, I am become a stranger
to my brethren, the invisibles, and to the great emanations of
Barbelo.”
17

Alchemical Voice - L2M - Issue 29
Mary once again interprets the story of Pistis Sophia, telling
the disciples that what they have just heard was prophesied
in Psalm 68. The Saviour commends her interpretation and
continues with a description of Pistis Sophia’s second
repentance. Once the Saviour has finished speaking, Peter
clearly agitated by Mary’s understanding of the teaching,
complains that,
“My Lord, we will not endure this woman, for she taketh the
opportunity from us and hath let none of us speak, but she
discourseth many times.”
The Saviour invites Peter to give his interpretation of the
second repentance (there are thirteen in all).
The Saviour continues to answer questions from his
disciples; with Mary Magdalene asking the majority of them.
The rift between Mary and Peter is clear:-
“My Lord, my mind is ever understanding, at every time to come
forwards and set forth the solution of the words that she (Pistis
Sophia) hath uttered; but I am afraid of Peter, because he
threatened me and hateth our sex.”
The Saviour defends her,
“Everyone who shall be filled with the spirit of light to come
forwards and set forth the solution of what I say, no one shall
be able to prevent him.”
Peter backs down, and Mary Magdalene continues to be the
main questioner and interpreter of the Saviour’s words.
Pistis Sophia is finally allowed to return to the thirteenth
aeon, where she sings a song of praise to the First Mystery.
The second book makes up Chapters 63-101. After the
conclusion of the story of Pistis Sophia, the text turns to
long explanations of cosmology and knowledge of the prized
mysteries.
Books three and four (Chapters 102-135) is taken up with
further revelations, together with ethical instructions which
the disciples are to preach once the Saviour has returned to
the light. It outlines what is needed for right thought and
right action, as well as actions that are not acceptable and
their punishments.
“Renounce love of the world, that ye may be worthy of the
mysteries of the light and be saved from the pitch and firecoats
of the dog-faced one.”
“Renounce wickedness, that ye may be worthy of the
mysteries of the light and be saved from the fire-sea of
Ariel.”
18

Alchemical Voice - L2M - Issue 29
Further exhortations follow, bringing together the Gnostic
and the orthodox:
“Say unto them: Be ye loving unto men.. Be ye gentle..
Minister unto the poor.. and the sick and the distressed.. Be ye
loving unto God, that ye may receive the mysteries of the Light
and go on high into the Light-kingdom.”
The fourth book provides an outline of what to expect for
the first baptism. Two more baptisms follow; a fire-baptism
and a baptism of the Holy Spirit of the Light, but these are
not described; the initiate must persist on the path and be
deemed ready.
Mary asks questions about the afterlife states of the sinner
and the re-incarnational cycle that souls must endure in
order to be cleansed, referring to a ‘cup of forgetfulness’
administered prior to incarnation, which explains why we do
not remember our past lives:-
“..And then Adamas, bringeth a cup filled with the water of
forgetfulness and handeth it to the soul, and it drinketh it and
forgetteth all regions and all the regions to which it hath gone.
And they cast it down into a body, which will spend its time
continually troubled in its heart. And that cup of forgetfulness
becometh body outside the soul, and resembleth the soul in all
– which is what is called the counterfeiting spirit.”
* In 2003 scientists discovered a molecule in the brain called
PP1 which affects the memory. Kinesiology confirmed the ‘cup
of forgetfulness’ refers to PP1 - we are programmed to forget.
Baptism purifies our soul – the counterfeit spirit is
separated from our soul and we can become a ‘perfect soul’.
The Saviour urges people not to defer spiritual development
for another lifetime, as the critical number of perfect souls
could be reached at any moment. This is the completion of
the First Mystery and the gnosis of the universe.
At this point, no more souls will be able to return to the
Light-kingdom.
“And from this hour onwards no one will be able to enter into
the Light. For at the completion of the time of the number of
the perfect souls, before I have set fire to the world*, in order
that it may purify the aeons and the veils and the firmaments
and the whole earth, mankind will be still existing.”
* Apparently this will be a sequence of natural events forest
fires, volcanoes, which with global warming at its present rate it
is a real possibility.
19

Alchemical Voice - L2M - Issue 29
“Strive thereafter, to renounce the whole world and the whole
matter therein, that ye may receive the mysteries of the Light
before the number of the perfect souls is completed*, in order
that they may not stop you before the gates of Light and lead
you away into the outer darkness.”
* Kinesiology confirmed the number of perfect souls required is
360. If you define a perfect soul as someone with a Level of
Consciousness +700, there are around 80 alive today. As we
evolve spiritually the number will increase. However, the
number goes down as well as up (like ‘Snakes & Ladders’!)
Mary Magdalene asks questions about the ‘outer darkness’
and ‘regions of chastisement’. The Saviour answers:-
“The outer darkness is a great dragon, whose tail is in its mouth,
outside the whole world and surrounding the whole world. And
there are many regions of chastisement within it. There are
twelve mighty chastisement-dungeons and a ruler is in every
dungeon and the face of the rulers is different one from
another.”
The Saviour says “... at the dissolution of the world, that is at
the ascension of the universe, those souls will perish through
the violent cold and the exceedingly violent fire and be nonexistent
for ever.”
Pistis Sophia says the only way to access the Treasury of
Light is via the Saviour. The Saviour is also a frequency, a
high vibration – and we all have the capacity to experience
Christ Consciousness.
I believe the first four books of Pistis Sophia were written
by a female descendant of Mary Magdalene, at Lake
Mareotis, Alexandria, Egypt in the late 1st century.
This ancient text is relevant today as I believe we are at this
point in history now..
Alchemical Voice - L2M - Issue 29
HAVE YOU MET YOUR
BODY?
Carol Coggan
Have you ever thought about your body? You wake up in
the morning, go through your routine, you may or may not
eat breakfast and feed your body, but then you go about
your day.
When you think about your body, it is a marvel!! The way it
all works, we eat to feed our bodies, we sleep to allow rest,
and in return we expect so much. We walk, run, attend
meetings, interact with others.
Our body is our only way of relating to the outside world.
We expect it to do everything we ‘ask’, and are thinking
about the next thing.
At times, we are aware of physical ailments, and so may
think about our body, and wonder why we are in pain. Then
we turn to the doctor or perhaps the Angels.
Archangel Raphael is the Archangel for healing on all levels
– spiritual, mental, physical and emotional. It is total
healing, full healthfulness.
As humans, we tend to separate all these aspects, so if we
have a physical ailment, we do not relate it to emotions. I
was talking to a client the other day, who had difficulties in
her marriage and experienced backache. She had an
operation on her spine, and whilst talking to me realised
that her spine is the main support of her body and that she
had gone through a period of feeling unsupported. Whilst I
am not suggesting we avoid medical diagnosis, it is always
worth checking where our pain is, and ascertaining what
the emotional/spiritual issue may be.
For instance, many elderly experience hip problems. In this
dimension people state it is old age, but often emotionally it
is the person fearful of walking forward in life, fearful of
the shortness of time (as they perceive it) that they have
left.
22

Alchemical Voice - L2M - Issue 29
You will often find when you have been under a period of
stress, or needing your body to ‘fire on all cylinders’ that as
soon as the stress eases, aches and pains develop, or other
conditions. This is often the body knowing it can breathe a
sigh of relief. It no longer has to be on high alert and
conditions manifest.
In the Stone Age, when man was confronted by a lion/tiger,
he would run away immediately, the adrenal glands would
produce adrenalin to have the energy to run and digestion,
reproductive and growth hormone production, and tissue
repair would temporarily stop working.
This reaction is known as flight (from the lion), there is also
fight, freeze and flop. Fight is self-explanatory, the freeze is
like a rabbit who freezes in the headlights, and the flop is a
way of ‘playing dead’.
We do not live in this Stone Age world but our brains still
have the amygdala part of the primitive brain, which
operates when faced with situations.
When people are faced with trauma or abuse, fight, flight,
freeze and flop kick in as the way of the body protecting
itself. I say trauma or abuse, but everyday situations can
produce stress and tension, and whilst we do not go into
the 4 extremes, our adrenalin increases and we are
prepared. When you go into a meeting for example, you are
all ‘psyched up’ and ‘prepared’.
I wonder what is going on in your body?
The other day a friend was organising a charity tea party. It
was a pleasurable event and she had help, but when the
time came, she could not eat anything as she felt the overall
responsibility. She managed to cope but her ‘stomach was
in knots’.
Think about when you are anxious about anything, how is
your body holding itself/coping. Do you grind your teeth?
Get a headache? Sleepless nights? Upset stomach? Then
when the ‘crisis’ is over, how does your body experience
relief? If your ‘stomach is in knots’ then you may not feel
like eating for some time.
The body is not receiving fuel to give you the energy that
you need to cope with the next issue.
23

Alchemical Voice - L2M - Issue 29
Several people I have met and worked with are
experiencing different degrees of cancer. We talk about
‘battling’ with cancer, ‘fighting’ it. So often people are
harbouring anger at their bodies for ‘letting them down’.
Whilst I am not suggesting a cure, the body is coping with
enough, without carrying the emotion of anger at ‘itself’.
The body is therefore not only ‘instructed’ to fight the
cancer, but is coping with anger at itself.
This can be helped by recognising your emotions, or
perhaps doing a tapping exercise. (Tapping is the Emotion
Freedom Technique, which enables people to tap on the
negative emotions that are preventing them from moving
forward). Whilst tapping, one client came to realise she had
been angry with her body, and was able to say ‘poor body’,
realising under the anger was sadness.
If you can move from being angry at your body or fighting
it, then you can support it as it copes with illness. Consider
the words you use, perhaps do not use ‘fighting’ or in a
‘battle’. We have many words which give us clues, for
instance disease – which essentially is dis-ease, the body is
not at ease. We have recover – which is re-cover, where we
cover the issues, and they return to as before.
So how do you think about your body now? Shift the
underlying negative emotions, because your body is
suffering and you are not vibrating at the highest level.
Release these negative emotions during the full moon and
move into gratitude. Thank your body for waking up in the
morning, and for all it does for you. Treat it as a friend.
Feed it with nutritious food, give it adequate sleep, and
‘ditch the worries’.
Ask Archangel Raphael and your Guardian Angel to help
you with this. He will help you recognise your negative
emotions and encourage you to list your worries to him. He
will guide you and show you the way through. It may not be
avoiding the issue but he will help you cope and vibrate at a
higher level.
SPIRITUALITY AND
EVERYDAY LIFE
John Sjovik
Each morning I perform a miniature ceremony. I stand
by the window, facing the patio and I greet the morning
sun. I lift my hands with palms turned upward. Then I
call upon my power animals and body protectors. I call
upon each one of them and I acknowledge their
individual qualities. I invite them to be with me during
the day, to protect me and to assist me. And I tell them
that I love them.
The whole ceremony takes less than 10 minutes. When
I have finished, I give thanks to my spirit allies and I
express gratitude to the sun for having kept its promise
and risen also that morning. And then I have breakfast.
Spirituality at home
Every home should be a place of rest and comfort. It
should be a place where you feel safe, where you have
control, where you are surrounded by people and
belongings that you have chosen and that matter to
you.
However, it cannot be helped that the metaphysical
aspects of what goes on in the outside world risk
seeping into your home, into your life. News on
television, on your mobile phone, in newspapers, radio
and other media will affect you. It is often difficult not
to think about what is going on in the world and not be
emotionally affected by it.
On a regular basis, I perform ceremonies to cleanse and
protect my house. I burn sage incense and carry it with
me from room to room to purify each part of my home.
I follow up by drumming and rattling my way through
the house, allowing the sound vibrations to fill the
rooms with protective energy and cancel out any voids
and pockets that could otherwise attract and maintain
unwanted energies or beings.
26

Alchemical Voice - L2M - Issue 29
Keep in mind that ceremonies for healing and protection should be repeated on a regular basis. Your home is
not in an isolated place. You come and go. Your family members and other visitors come and go. They all bring
with them vibrations and energies picked up in the outside world. As per Shamanism, everything is energy, as
well as thoughts and feelings. Some of it may be beneficial for your home. Some of it may be detrimental to
some extent. It is a good idea to introduce, for example, a monthly cleansing ritual of your home, just to make
sure to neutralize any unbalances and disharmonies.
Spirituality in the workplace
When I worked with contract management, I regularly participated in meetings and gave presentations. This
was a recurring cause of stress for me. People expected me to give them valid and correct information and to
deliver it with well-chosen keywords, flowcharts and diagrams. No matter how well prepared I was, I was still
nervous and tense each time.
Then came a time when my private search for the metaphysical aspects of life led me to Shamanism. Amongst
many things, I got acquainted with power animals. During the course of several workshops, I developed a
close relationship and bond with three particular power animals; an eagle, a wolf and a fox.
The next time I was scheduled to give a project presentation at work, I decided to request my power animals
to assist me. So I performed a ceremony and contacted all three. I explained to them about the upcoming
challenge of the presentation and asked them for help. They agreed to help me and we decided that I would
be allowed to partake of their individual qualities and strengths.
Eagle would provide his vision and ability to soar high above every situation and challenge. He would help me
to rise to such a height that I would not get confused by details and lose myself in them. He would help me to
see the greater picture and use details only when needed to support it. He would help me add perspective, to
show my listeners trends and forecasts for projections of achievements and results.
27

Alchemical Voice - L2M - Issue 29
Wolf would lend me his strength, stamina and
intelligence. He would help me stand my ground, to
maintain my position as well as provide leadership to
create a productive and inclusive meeting.
Fox volunteered to inspire me with his keen skills of
observation and ability to interpret what is going on. He
would help me to be ‘street smart’ and notice people’s
behaviour and anticipate their feelings and questions.
Fox knows how to be one step ahead.
The day of the meeting arrived. I went early to the
conference room to prepare myself and prepare the
room. I closed the door to make sure no one could see
me. Then I clapped my hands in a steady rhythm,
mimicking the beating of a Shaman’s drum. I called
upon my power animals and within moments, all three
joined me.
People arrived and I started the meeting. It went well
and I felt the support of my power animals. Most
importantly was that people left the meeting with a
sense of community and having been updated and
motivated for the continued work. And I learned how
to improve and be even better prepared for the next
meeting.
Spirituality in a relationship
We all know that relationships can be tricky to
navigate. They often present a cocktail of desires,
dreams, joys, anticipations, wishes, surprises,
disappointments, all packed into a rollercoaster of
emotions.
Let us be adventurous and assume that a good
approach is to try and be honest to yourself and simply
be as genuine and “real” as you can. Keep in mind that
your date may actually like you for who and what you
really are.
A good start is to try and tone down your ego. In
Shamanism, there are ceremonies to become whole and
empowered.
As an alternative to visiting a Shaman, I can recommend
guided meditations. See post note at the end of this
article.
28

Alchemical Voice - L2M - Issue 29
It is important to preserve your energy. Energy loss creates a risk of not being able to express your true self.
It can make it hard for you to think clearly, make decisions and stand your ground. You become vulnerable to
unwanted influences.
When you feel stressed, a typical reaction within your mind is to go back to a habit. That is why some people
always light a cigarette in stressful situations. It is a form of conditioning. However, you can train yourself and
reprogram your Go To behaviour. Instead of lighting a cigarette, think of a time when you felt really confident
and happy. Maybe you used to go fishing during your childhood summers. You can use that as a trigger. Next
time you feel stressed, imagine yourself with a fishing rod in your hands (or whatever trigger is meaningful for
you) and your confident happiness will return, which in turn will enable you to think more clearly and handle
the present situation in a better way.
Spirituality, escapism and personal responsibility
This is perhaps a sensitive topic but nevertheless important to say a few words about.
I remember a workshop on Shamanism that I participated in a few years ago. One of the other people clearly
enjoyed the fellowship with the participants. Even though the workshop only lasted for an extended
weekend, she quickly adjusted herself to the group and the setting and embraced it as if it were her new life.
For her, the newly found community represented a fantastic miniature universe of love and compassion.
Communal meals were enjoyed in fellowship and as if belonging to an extended family. In the evenings,
people sat in the library lounge, drinking herbal tea and discussing aspects of spirituality without a word
about politics, sports or work.
Regrettably, the weekend finally came to an end and for the woman participant that came as a brutal shock.
With tears, she realized that she would have to crash into the ordinary world, with all the shortcomings and
conflict it included. It seems to me that for some people a workshop or an individual ceremony often holds
more allure than the actual purpose of the workshop or ceremony.
29

Alchemical Voice - L2M - Issue 29
Although the element of enjoying a couple of days of time out from everyday life is pleasant, a workshop is
not and should not be an escape into a protective miniature world. You are supposed to learn and gain insight
about yourself, about other people and about the privilege of being alive. Each step of the ritual becomes part
of a transmutation process to a new self, a new definition of who you are.
One of the things I remember from my first workshop in Shamanism was the teacher telling us that he is
merely a guide and facilitator, not a guru or priest. He said, “Do not give me any apples.”
It is important to always remember that you have a personal responsibility for your own healing and
development. A surgeon can fix your broken thumb but you have to participate in the mending of your broken
soul. A riding instructor can show you how to ride, but you have to sit on the horse yourself.
One of my clients kept calling me and asking me if I had found the magic solution to fix all her problems. I kept
reminding her that this is a work that we must do together, with me as support and guide and with her being
serious and genuinely involved in her own healing.
An acquaintance of mine suffers from anxiety and he is seeing a psychologist. He is annoyed that the
psychologist wants him to participate in exercises to benefit his healing process. The psychologist charges a
lot of money, so why should my acquaintance have to involve himself in the process? He is paying the
psychologist to make him well, so he maintains that it is the psychologist’s job to find a solution. Yet, you
cannot buy health and well-being. There is no quick fix or fast track to balance and harmony. It takes time and
it takes a personal commitment.
A psychologist, therapist, Shamanic practitioner, Reiki healer or any other healer is merely a support; someone
to guide you and assist you in the process. I never attempted to give answers, when I worked with clients.
My focus was on helping the client to ask good questions and to better understand the multiple dimensions of
the situation.
30

Alchemical Voice - L2M - Issue 29
A therapy session can be demanding but it can also be thrilling. During an hour or so, you are in the absolute
focus of attention, the therapist or healer is listening carefully to your every word and is noticing your every
movement. There is no situation in life when you are in such an intimate spotlight, except maybe when you are
in love and enjoying a passionate infatuation with your partner.
Spirituality just for you
As for many children, my childhood view of the world was filled with mystery and magic. I saw connections
which for adults were not there. There were spirits in the woods behind our house. The shadows at night were
living beings. With Lego pieces, I built a control panel to operate an imaginary spaceship.
When I was a child, there was magic all around.
My teddy bear could talk and his orange fur grew long.
My monkey toy played a drum
And my toy car raced around the kitchen.
My water gun sprayed patterns on the balcony
And my cowboy hat helped me travel through time.
I saw shadows in the street and mystical shapes passing by.
I turned detective and learned who they were.
The man with the lawn mower was an alien from space
And the postman was on a secret mission.
There was food in the fridge and my mother baked a cake.
My dad went to work and smoked his pipe after dinner.
John Sjovik
Shaman Healer
shamaqi.com
And then I turned five...
I did indeed turn five. I grew up and in the process, I lost much of the natural sense of spirituality I had as a
child. My life’s path took me from the metaphysics of my childhood to the adult’s technocratic view of the
world. It was not until I had reached a mature age that I reclaimed some of the sense of wonder of my
childhood.
Today when time has taken me beyond the hustle and bustle of industry and commerce, the noise and
commotion of everyday life, I am slowly and gently rediscovering the multiple layers of realities that form the
Universe.
The physical world and the metaphysical aspects of it overlap like ocean waves of varying size and energy. By
accepting and exploring all the aspects and dimensions of the world around you, you will be rewarded with a
more meaningful life with a deeper connection to the city you live in and the countryside beyond it, to other
people and indeed to yourself.
To live a full life is to go beyond your basic five senses and participate in existence, with all its beauty, mystery
and potential.
THE ‘THREE SELVES’
Martin Lewis
...and how these impact our health.
‘My Three Selves’ is a therapeutic psychological
approach, in which our self-concept refers to our
perceived knowledge, beliefs, and feelings about
ourselves, and encompasses the elements of selfworth,
self-image, and self-esteem. These are formed
through our experiences, interactions, and reflections,
which play a pivotal role in influencing our behaviour,
emotions, and interpersonal relationships.
A healthy self-concept promotes well-being, while a
negative one can lead to emotional, social and health
challenges. This can include thinking you are fat, when
you are not, and similar thought processes.
This approach offers a practical way of understanding
our authentic behaviour, or ‘our truth’, and considers
that rather than being either ‘authentic’ or
“inauthentic,” each of us has the following three
selves: the Authentic Self, the Adapted (intellectual)
Self, and the Performing (child) Self. It considers that if
we adapt to stressful situations then we are not being
authentic, and therefore we ‘perform’ for the benefit
of the stressor, not ourselves.
This leads to illness and dysfunction.
In the Three Selves approach, each of our two ‘lower
selves' have their own distinct neurology.
Our Conscious Waking Self relates to our cerebral
brain (our intellectual self), spine and the lateral
spinal nerves. Our Immune System Self (subconscious
inner child), relates to our digestive organs,
oesophagus and tongue.
34

Alchemical Voice - L2M - Issue 29
John Roger, who founded the Peace Theological Seminary & College of Philosophy, stated that the function of
these two neurologies is behind his theory that there is a thought for every feeling and a feeling for every
thought. He is quoted as saying: “All that you want to be you already are. All you have to do is move your awareness
there and recognise the reality [and truth] of your own Soul.”
In effect, if we function within our authentic self, and act within our own Soul level truth, then our digestion
works really well, and therefore we get optimal nutrition available to all parts of our body.
So………. some questions that you might like to conjure with might be:
Which of my two nervous systems is stronger - immune or intellect?
Is one dominant?
What strengthens my weaker neurology?
What is causing me to be inauthentic?
In effect, if we do not align with spiritual truth of ourselves, then it becomes challenging to maintain our health
at optimum levels, digest food to provide optimum nutrients for our body, and therefore we become physically
weak and unhealthy.
Understanding these two neurologies is the foundation for the GAPS dietary principle, as well as its foundational
psychology. So……….. What is the GAPS diet and who is it for?
GAPS stands for Gut And Psychology Syndrome. It’s a term that Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride MD, PhD in
Neurology, who also designed the GAPS diet, invented.
Her theory is that a leaky gut causes many conditions that affect your brain, and that the way you think is the
cause behind the leaky gut!
35

Alchemical Voice - L2M - Issue 29
Leaky gut syndrome is the term used to describe an
increase in the permeability of the gut wall. The GAPS
theory is that a leaky gut allows chemicals and bacteria
from your food and environment to enter your blood
when they wouldn’t normally do so. In effect your
defences are ‘leaky’, you let things bother you too
easily, and you worry too much.
It claims that once these foreign substances enter your
blood, they can affect your brain’s function and
development, causing ‘brain fog’ and conditions like
autism.
The GAPS diet protocol is designed to heal the gut,
preventing toxins from entering the bloodstream and
therefore lowering toxicity in the body. This in turn
allows your neurology to function optimally.
Although the link between intestinal permeability and
disorders like celiac disease, Crohn’s, and IBS is well
established, it isn’t clear if or how leaky gut plays a role
in the development of mental or neurological
conditions.
The idea here is that your ‘leaky gut’ is actually created
by YOU, adapting to a stress that actually you are NOT
being authentic to… or… honest and accurate with.
Technically you are ‘reacting’ to the stressor, and
trying to adapt, usually for the benefit of the stressor,
rather than taking the easy route.
How often do you say YES, when you really wanted to
say NO!
Saying YES to a demand or expectation is adaptation.
Our inner child is likely to say NO to a command fairly
easily. As we mature we start saying YES more and
more often, when our inner child is screaming in our
ear - NOOO!!!
Honesty and accuracy are fundamental conditions that
enable your Liver and Kidneys to break down toxins via
the excretory pathways (bowel and kidney)….. or poo
and pee !
36

Alchemical Voice - L2M - Issue 29
In her book, Dr. Campbell-McBride states that the
GAPS dietary protocol cured her first child of autism.
She now widely promotes the protocol as a natural
cure for many psychiatric and neurological conditions,
including: autism, ADD and ADHD, dyspraxia, dyslexia,
depression, schizophrenia, and many other neurological
conditions.
These conditions are driven by our two lower selves
conflicting with our third self - our truth, or ‘authentic
self ’. This conflict can be recognised through the lies
and habits we adopt to defend and de-stress our ‘twoselves’,
when we find it difficult to be honest and
accurate. Richard Bach, author of Jonathan Livingston
Seagull has said that: “the worst lies are the ones we tell
ourselves. We live in denial of what we think, and what we
do”… [that are harmful to our ‘selves’].
Habits suggest inflexibility. They are ‘a reaction’ to
stress we feel we cannot control. Habits literally
‘tranquillise' us, and we rarely question them. However,
we can change a habit, if we wish to. Our Habit Body
overlaps 90% or more with our ‘child within’ (or our
Inner Child), so most habits are ‘inner child’ driven
behaviours. You know you have excess reactivity if you
find yourself saying:
“I knew I shouldn’t have eaten it but I ate it anyway.”
“I knew I shouldn’t have said that, but I said it anyway.”
“I knew it was bad for me but I went and did it anyway.”
So……. why do we react when we know better?
Excess over- and under-reactivity is the biggest
category of disturbance in the human experience.
According to John Roger, most of the time, we are
reacting too quickly to events that happen in our lives.
Self-discipline is largely a matter of disciplining our
reactivity on multiple levels.
Why are we ‘of two minds’?
This is a top/bottom (brain/gut), left brain/right brain
split.
37

Alchemical Voice - L2M - Issue 29
When someone is of two minds, the cerebral nervous system has one point of view, and our gut brain has
another, different idea, goal, project or need. When our two nervous systems are not aligned (with our spiritual
authentic truth), we are ‘of two minds’. We don’t involve our ‘gut instinct’ enough.
We overthink things too much!
Reactivity is also ‘liking and disliking.’ Throughout life we are constantly learning to moderate our EXCESS liking
and disliking. We need to outgrow habits and behaviours that no longer work for us. But first we need to
question them, and that requires us to become aware!
We have one visible body, (physical), and four more invisible bodies: (imaginal, emotional, mental and fictitious
(mythological). On each of these levels, we have reactions. Reactions we practice over time become habits.
Habits we perceive working for us make us feel comfortable, and the habits and behaviours we prefer to use to
respond to the stresses of life.
It’s possible to go through the human experience devoting most of our time, attention and creativity to setting
up and maintaining just our comfort zones. However, if we do this, then we can feel like, ‘How come I’m not
getting anything accomplished’?
If you often feel that you are not achieving, or not getting anything done, and not taking risks…. now you
know why! You are trying to maintain ‘comfortability’.
Excess reactivity is one of the first obstacles that we need to work on in spiritual/personal growth. However
what I find in my clinic is that reactivity is likely to be the last issue we ever work on. Lies and habits are allpervasive
in human experience.
38

Alchemical Voice - L2M - Issue 29
We need to work on our ‘bad habits’ and regain our ‘inner sunshine’. ‘Inner Sunshine’ is our capacity to feel
bouncy and ‘light’; so that, the ‘slings and arrows of outrageous fortune’ roll off us like ‘water off a duck’s
back’.
Adequate and efficient neuro-transmitter production is the neuro-chemistry of Inner Sunshine.
A ‘see-saw’ exists in our unconscious.
On either end, ‘misery’ and ‘sunshine’ go up and down. That is LIFE! If you prefer, picture this as a tug-of-war,
back and forth. As one gains strength, the other gets weaker and vice versa.
Misery blocks us from making inner sunshine. The game of inner sunshine is simple: Release inner misery, and
increase inner sunshine……… stop reacting and be honest and truthful…… starting with your ‘two’ selves.
Increasing neuro-transmitter (NT) production requires two things:
1. High quality protein and clear metabolic pathways to assimilate it.
2. Willingness in our unconscious to make more NTs while we sleep.
We make the majority (80%) of our neurotransmitters only while sleeping. This means that how we make NTs
is unconscious, in the area of our psyche where ‘willingness’ and ‘willingness to heal’ live. Hence sleeping is
our time to heal and repair.
Guess what? Our unconscious is plenty smart enough to block production of NTs, if it feels either unsafe to
make them; or does not trust the purpose that our conscious self will put more inner sunshine to.
In both the 1980s and early 2000s research suggested that optimal protein and amino acid supplements did
not produce expected NT production in about 50% of individuals.
Why is this?……..because increasing inner sunshine (NT production) requires a two-pronged approach.
One is intuitive thinking about amino acid intake, clearance of metabolic pathways and the like. The other
prong is intuitive feeling, that is the conscious sensing and attendance to where our psyche has low
willingness to allow more inner sunshine.
An example is reading bad news (any commonly available newspaper) while you are eating your lunch!… or
worse - working through your lunch break!!
Neither of these ‘habits’ create inner sunshine, they create misery, indigestion - and potential ‘leaky gut
syndrome’.
PEOPLE OF THE
WIND AND SUN
Shaeen Svanede
They call themselves the Sámi and they live in Sapmi which is
located in northern Sweden, Norway, Finland and the Russian
Kola Peninsula. The Sámi are the indigenous people who have
lived in northern Europe for at least 2,500 years and are also
referred to as the People of the Wind and the Sun.
It is believed that there are between 60,000 and 100,000
Sámi living in Norway, 35,000 in Sweden, 10,000 in Finland
and 2,000 in Russia.
As with many indigenous tribes they were harassed and
oppressed and they were only just recently allowed some
independence through the Sámi Parliament. Rightly enough
they are still seeking rectification for the injustices they have
been subjected to. Although they are seen as one group of
people, their rights differ from one country to the other. I will
mostly refer to the Sámi of Sweden in this article.
They have their own flag, national anthem - Sámi soga álávlla
- and celebrate their national day on 6th February. That date
was chosen because the first Sámi national assembly was held
on that day in 1917. As late as 2010 the Swedish Constitution
was amended to recognize the Sámi as a minority group.
The language
Sámi is also the name of the spoken language. Unfortunately,
not many people know how to speak it properly nowadays
since it has long been prohibited. Even today it is uncertain
whether Sámi children are entitled to home language
education. Therefore many families take their children to
Norway to study Northern Sámi which is not one of the
accents normally spoken in Sweden.
In Sweden the language is divided into three main language
groups: East Sámi, Central Sámi and South Sámi. These in turn
have become various dialects that can be very different from
one another.
42

Alchemical Voice - L2M - Issue 29
The reason is because Sámi used to live as nomads until the
beginning of the 20th century, following the reindeer as they
wandered.
Not many of the Sámi are involved in reindeer husbandry
today but those who are, are considered by many to have a
slightly higher status than others. Before the industrialized
fishing industry took over there were also many sea Sámi,
who made a living from fishing and hunting. Today the vast
majority of the Sámi live just like everyone else and have any
kind of ordinary jobs although it seems to be a growing
interest amongst the younger generation to take some of the
old customs back.
The old traditions
We don´t have polar bears walking the streets of Northern
Sweden but we do have reindeer, the winter market in
Jokkmokk and the Ice Hotel of Jukkasjärvi that draws many
tourists every year. Reindeer husbandry still involves lassoing
animals and ritual slaughter, reindeer and dogs are used for
pulling sledges and you can still admire the Sámi art with its
marvellous work on tin, leather, beak and drums.
There is a traditional Sámi costume with different ornaments
that shows which region you belong to. The mainly blue hat
that was so popular for a while was originally worn by the
Karesuando Sámi. There is also the "four winds cap", a cap
with four points that originally came from the Varanger
Peninsula. Nowadays, a variant with a brim is worn by the
Karesuando Sámi.
The joik is probably forever associated with the Sámi. It is a
special kind of song, often about love and yearning, but it is
also used religiously. You can listen to Marie Boine, Jon
Henrik Fjällgren or Sofia Jannok and you will hear a beautiful
mixture of the Sámi's ancient singing and modern music.
The religion
It is not easy to get the facts straight about what the Sámi
religion was like in pre-Christian times. This is because most
of what you can find in the scriptures was written down by
priests who considered the Sámi to be pagans and thus had
their own slant on the story.
As with so many ancient folk beliefs, the Sámi faith was
transformed by the influence of others. In this case,
fragments from both the beliefs of the Vikings and the
Christians were included.
43

Alchemical Voice - L2M - Issue 29
From the 17th century onwards the Sámi were forbidden to
practice their ancient customs. They even took children from
their families to be brought up in a strict Christian way and
many were forced to denounce their relatives.
They could be given the death penalty if they continued to
practice their old religion and had to operate in secret if
persisting. In modern times, therefore, practitioners still exist
but they have declined in numbers over the centuries.
Laestadianism which was a Lutheran form of Christianity also
had a major impact on the Sámi community.
The traditional religion is a nature religion that believes that
all of nature is animistic. It is important to be in harmony with
all natural beings and celestial phenomena which can be both
good and evil. It is thus a polytheistic religion with many gods
and the dead ancestors are also highly valued.
Sacred places
As the Sámi were a nomadic people they often practiced their
rituals outdoors. Some places are considered particularly
sacred, especially mountains and rivers. This is where the
Saajve people live, nature beings that sometimes show
themselves to humans if they find them worthy.
People would gather at these sacred places to honour the
gods and also ask for wishes to come true, whether it would
be about health, good fortune in hunting or prosperity.
An altar would have been set up and back in the time animal
sacrifices were undertaken - reindeer in particular - but today
most people avoid rituals involving blood sacrifice. The altar is
called sejta and can be anything from a stone to an entire
mountain where you make offerings - usually coins - to the
gods. These sejtas often have a wooden image of one of the
many Sámi deities. Such a wooden image is called a vieromoere,
which means sacrificial wood and the offering is called
a viero or gierke.
The noaidi and the drum
The noaidi is a Sámi shaman. He is said to be in close contact
with the spirits and gods and is often the one leading the
ceremonies. Some noaidi are said to be able to stop and
lessen the bleeding of wounds and read the future by looking
at the intestines from a slaughtered rein deer.
44

Alchemical Voice - L2M - Issue 29
In the past noaidi were mostly males but today it refers to
anyone who has healing gifts or psychic powers regardless of
being male or female.
One of the noadis´ most important tools is the troll drum also
known as the seid drum, which was banned for a long time.
Each household used to have its own drum but not very many
of those were saved from being burnt and today barely a
hundred of these are left. However, there are still craftsmen
who make drums in the old traditional way.
The type and shape of the drum varies slightly depending on
where it is made and for what purpose. There are mainly two
different types; frame drums and bowl drums both covered
with reindeer hide. They are usually decorated with paintings
of deities, boats, reindeer and other prey. Sometimes they
also have amulets attached to them to enhance their powers.
The use of troll drums is mentioned in historical documents
from the 12th century and describes how a noaidi goes into a
trance with the help of the drum to get answers to various
questions or to heal a sick person. There is even a smaller
drum specifically made for fortune-telling. The latter comes
with a hammer made of bone and a brass ring. The noaidi is
holding the drum horizontally while drumming with the
hammer and lets the ring bounce about until it stops. The
signs and deities shown in the circle of the ring will then be
interpreted.
The three worlds
The world is according to the Sámi divided into the upper,
middle and underworld.
Below several of the most important gods are mentioned so
prepare yourself for some tongue-twisting names.
The Upper World
Rádienáhttje aka Väráldaráde aka Väraldenolmai is the ruler
of the cosmos. He is also the one who creates the soul of
each human which he brings on to Máttaráhkká. Every
autumn a sacrificial pole is erected in honour of him to
symbolize the world pillar that supports the firmament.
Rádienáhkká is his wife.
Radienpardne is the son of Rádienáhttje and Rádienáhkká and
is said to perform whatever his father asks him to do.
45

Alchemical Voice - L2M - Issue 29
Rananeita is their daughter and the goddess of spring and fertility.
Beaivi is the god of the sun who gives life to all creatures through his warmth and light. In the past, a white reindeer was
sacrificed in his honour to bring back the sun from a long cold winter.
Beaivineita is the daughter of the sun who often accompanies her father in his work.
Mánno is the moon goddess worshipped especially during the dark moon phase.
Horagalles aka Dierpmis is the god of thunder who brings the rain that makes everything bloom but he is also the
destructive lightning and fire. He has a bow and arrow - the rainbow - which is used to dispel evil forces. He is the
protector of the noaidi when he is travelling between the worlds.
Bieggolmai is the god of the wind, rain and snow.
The Middle World
Máttaráhkká is the primordial mother who lives under the floor of the hut and also carries the heavenly made body of a
child in order to pass it on to one of her daughters to be given a gender before conception. Máttaráhkká has three
daughters; Sáráhkká, Juoksáhkká and Uksáhkká.
Sáráhkká lives in the fireplace and is the protector of the home and also creates girls from the heavenly created child to
be. She also protects pregnant women and reindeer and assists in the delivery of newborns.
Juoksáhkká lives where the drum and hunting weapons are kept. She is also the creator of boys before conception.
Uksáhkká lives under the door of the hut and protects everyone who passes the threshold. She is also the protector of
the infants.
Liejbbeålmåj is the god of the hunters and rules over the wild animals.
Lodi aka Lodisjädne is a bird lady that can provide good hunting for birds.
Barboakke protects the migratory birds as they fly across the world. You can hear her talking to the cranes when they
return in the spring.
Tjáhtjeålmåj is the counselor of all waters and he is the one to turn to for good fishing luck.
Saivaneita is a mermaid who lives in the sacred Saiva Lakes and can lure men into the depths.
Jisenolmai aka Ritniolmai lives in the northern lights and causes the ice to settle when the hoarfrost comes.
The middle world is also where humans live and they are seen as both earthly and heavenly.
The Underworld
The underground world is the home both to gods and the dead. There are also two different realms of death; Saivo and
Rota Almo.
Jábbmeáhkka rules in the underworld of Saivo which is a merry place. She is the one with whom the noaidi negotiates to
recover the soul of a sick person during healing. You can also make sacrifices to Jábbmeáhkka if you wish to have a
longer life here on earth.
46

Rota is the dangerous spirit from the dark underworld of Rota
Aimo. He brings sickness and death if you don't show respect
to the spirits. The greatest sacrifice you can make to Rota is a
horse. You can also hang small boxes made of bark filled with
food in the trees around the house for protection.
Conclusion
This article only shared a little about our ancient people from
the north and like with so many other cultures from the past
you can see similarities with newer cultures and religions as
the latter derive and has developed from the old beliefs in one
way or the other.
The fact that we find the same truth in different parts of the
world with slightly different expressions is intriguing. It seems
like we actually believe in the same thing, we just express it
differently. It is a fact that all people basically have the same
needs and if we acknowledge that rather than looking at the
differences, bridges can be built instead of being torn down.
And if we go back to the animistic religions we will also
understand that we are all in fact part of nature and should act
accordingly instead of acting as self-proclaimed rulers of the
universe.
Hidden in the Mist
Alchemical Voice - L2M - Issue 29
“Ambulance.
Please hurry. It’s my
sister” Robert blurted out,
the terror and panic quite
obvious in his fast delivery
of the short sentence.
“What’s your location,
please” the call responder
asked.
“The end of Vine Lane,
Stoke D’Abernon, where
the path to the river is.”
He looked at Richard as if
for confirmation. Richard
nodded, his eyes wide and
his features pinched in
concern.
“Please hurry,” Robert
added, a sob catching in
his throat.
“I think she might be
dying.”
The last was a plea
delivered with a sob
released from impotent
despair.
Alchemical Voice - L2M - Issue 29
Our pets offer us companionship, sharing a unique connection that
enriches our lives, fosters mutual love, and deepens our bond
through shared experiences and energies.
Because of this, creating a stress-free environment for our pets at
home is so important. When travelling, what do you do with your
pets?
Having your pets with you whenever possible can greatly reduce
their anxiety, and yours. Rather than using kennels — where
unfamiliar sounds and surroundings can cause stress — consider
looking for pet-friendly hotels and lodges. These days, it’s
increasingly common to find accommodation that welcomes pets.
However, should that option fail, or it’s too challenging to travel
with your pets, finding a trustworthy friend to come and stay with
them can sometimes be a workable alternative. If that's also not an
option, then there are many 5-star house and petsitters who are
available to stay over. They don’t expect payment and will even
mow lawns, water plants and collect your mail. You’ll be able to
see, with full transparency, all their past housesits and reviews
regarding how well they performed their duties. Nothing is hidden
so it’s a good place to make an informed decision and you won’t
owe them any favours afterwards
Having a reliable person (or couple) to feed and walk your dogs,
send daily pics and take care of daily chores like waste bin
management and plant watering provides peace of mind. Their
online reviews and ratings from other pet owners can help you
choose the right housesitter, and you can always have a
conversation beforehand, no strings attached, to ensure you're
each a good fit for the other.
You can also find sitters with expertise in specific medical issues. If
you worry about leaving a diabetic cat behind, rest assured you
can find support on this trusted site allowing you to relax and
enjoy your holiday.
Taking care of your pets while you’re away is crucial for their wellbeing
and for your peace of mind, too. Remember, our pets are
sentient beings, perceiving energies around them. Ensuring they
are in a loving, familiar environment helps keep them happy and
relaxed, which is great for their health and great for you.
