If a pancake and a crepe had a love child, it would be a
recipe in Yotam Ottolenghi’s much-anticipated new book.
And from there on, past salmon fishcakes with chermoula
Bohemian fish pie, to the last Malty figgy pudding recipe,
it’s just one extraordinarily sensational comfy dish after
another. But what makes it comfort food? As Yotam points
out, one kid’s melted-cheese-toasted sandwich dream is
another kid’s nightmare. Very often, behind a comforting
dish often lies a relationship: A unique attachment. From
meatloaf to matza ball soup to marble cake ... for each of
us it’s a feeling we’re remembering about them. Perhaps,
he says, it should be called memory food or community
food. Whichever ... Ottolenghi Comfort is overflowing
with dishes that may already be in your comfort food
bank, others that will hopefully, once you’ve made them
enough times for people you love, become them ... dishes
and memories and feelings to pass on from generation to
Taheera Augousti:
SA hockey player & 1st time Olympian
Taheera Augousti, at just 19, has already made her mark on the
global stage as a field hockey player for South Africa. Coming
from a sporty family, Taheera was introduced to sports at a very
young age, eventually finding her heart drawn to hockey at the
age of six. With her sights set on becoming one of the best, she
focused entirely on hockey, and her passion and hard work have
taken her to the Olympic Games
– a dream turned reality.
What was it like to compete at the Paris Olympics? How did
that experience compare to other competitions?
Competing at the Olympics was a dream come true. It’s hard
to put into words just how special it felt, especially because my
family was there with me. I also got to play against people I’ve
looked up to and who have inspired me throughout my career.
“Playing at
the Olympic
Games was a
dream come
true. It’s a
feeling that
I cannot
explain.”
How did it feel to represent South Africa on such a
prestigious stage?
Standing with my teammates and singing the national anthem
on the world stage was surreal. I had goosebumps the first time,
and it was a moment I had waited for my entire life. Representing
South Africa is something I do with so much pride, and it’s not
something many people get the chance to do.
How has growing up and training in Bloemfontein shaped
you as an athlete?
Growing up in Bloemfontein has definitely played a big role in
shaping me as an athlete. Hockey is very big here, and during my
school years, the competition between schools was intense. That
competition helped me grow and develop my skills, which led
me to where I am today.
What challenges have you faced on your journey to the
Olympics, and how did you overcome them?
Being one of the youngest in the team – I was nervous about
making mistakes and letting my team down. But that fear
pushed me to work even harder and become better.
What are your future plans in your sporting career?
I’m still young, so I’m definitely aiming to go to more Olympic
Games. I also have goals to play for a club in The Netherlands and
to continuously improve my game.
What advice would you give to young, aspiring athletes,
especially those from South Africa?
No matter your circumstances or background, you can achieve
anything if you put your mind to it. You need to be willing to
work harder than anyone else and give it everything you’ve got.
Outside of sports, what are some of your personal interests?
How do you balance your life as an elite athlete with other
passions?
I love spending time with my family and friends. It’s easy
to balance my personal life with sports because my family
understands how busy my schedule is, and they support me
through it.
Johanita Scholtz:
SA Badminton star & 1st time Olympian
At 24, Johanita Scholtz is a dedicated badminton player for South
Africa. Her love for sports began when she was just four years
old. Growing up, watching her mother play squash, Johanita’s
curiosity led her to the badminton courts, where she found her
passion. From that moment, she immersed herself in the world
of badminton, a sport that challenged her on every level and
became her lifelong pursuit. Today, she continues to push the
limits of her abilities, fuelled by her unwavering dedication to the
game.
“Badminton challenges you in
every way possible, and if you
know me, I love a challenge.”
What was it like to compete at the Paris Olympics? How
did that experience compare to other competitions?
Competing in the Paris Olympics was an unforgettable
experience. The atmosphere was exhilarating, and the level
of competition was intense. There’s something special
about the Olympics–the camaraderie, the respect among
athletes, and the pride of representing your country on the
world stage. It was the culmination of years of hard work
and dreaming.
How did it feel to represent South Africa at such a
prestigious event?
It was an honour and deeply humbling to represent South
Africa. Wearing the national colours on the biggest stage
of the sporting world filled me with pride. It’s not just
about me – it’s about everyone who has supported me
along the way, and all the athletes who have come before
me. It was truly unforgettable.
How has growing up and training in Bloemfontein
shaped you as an athlete?
Growing up in Bloemfontein gave me the belief in my
abilities. I’ve had strong mentors, and the community
has always been my rock. The support system here is
incredible, and I’ve had sparring partners from previous
Olympians to national champions. It’s a place that
produces strong athletes.
What challenges have you faced on your journey to the
Olympics, and how did you overcome them?
One of the biggest challenges was staying mentally
positive during setbacks. There were times when things
didn’t go as expected, but those challenges taught me
perseverance. I had a great support structure that helped
me stay focused on my goals.
What are your future plans in your sporting career?
I’m focused on continuous improvement, with an eye
on the 2028 Olympics. I want to compete at the highest
level, refine my skills, and contribute to the growth of
badminton. Major tournaments leading up to the next
Games will be part of that journey.
What advice would you give to young, aspiring
athletes?
Competing against the world might seem daunting,
but we can absolutely compete at the top level. You
just have to believe in yourself and never settle for
less.
Outside of sports, what are some of your
personal interests? How do you balance your
life as an elite athlete with other passions?
I studied fashion design because I’ve always
loved art and fashion. Balancing sports and
designing is all about integrating both into
my daily routine. It helps me take my
mind off one when I need to focus on
the other, and that balance has been
essential for me.
Kayla Swarts:
SA hockey player & 1st time Olympian
From a young age, Kayla Swarts has always been drawn to
the outdoors and sports, where her competitive spirit, rooted
in family, pushed her to excel. With a deep love for athletics
and hockey, her journey as an athlete began almost as soon
as she could walk, driven by her desire to constantly improve
and be the best version of herself.
What was it like to compete at the Paris Olympics? How
did that experience compare to other competitions
you’ve participated in?
Representing my country and family at the biggest sporting
event in history was honestly something I used to think one
can only dream of, but having it come to life felt so surreal.
The fact I could share this moment with my brother just
made it so much more special. It doesn’t compare to any
competition I’ve been to before. The atmosphere we as a
team created, starting from the change room going onto the
field, brought me so much pride. Being starstruck – seeing
my idols strolling around in the Olympic village – and, mostly,
the amount of preparation and sacrifice that went into
the Games, made it all worthwhile. It finally paid off when I
played my first match against Argentina, singing the anthem,
realising that a lifelong dream had just come true.
What was it like going to the Olympics with your brother,
Wayde? How has his success and world record influenced
or inspired your own athletic career?
Building up to the Paris Olympics, I often thought back to the
moment my brother broke the record in 2016. Just seeing
how ecstatic and proud my parents were, and the way it
made me feel watching from the stands, made me realise
that one day I too want to strive towards competing at the
Olympics and bring that sense of joy and pride to my family.
It often did get tough during the Olympic preparation, but
having someone in my corner who’s overcoming similar
obstacles and battles, who’s already been to two Olympic
Games, and who shares advice is truly a blessing and not
something many people are privileged to have.
How did it feel to represent South Africa at such a
prestigious event like the Olympics? What does
wearing the national colours on the world stage
mean to you personally?
Representing my country felt surreal and an
absolute honour. Wearing the national colours,
especially alongside my brother, made the whole
experience even more meaningful.
How has growing up and training in Bloemfontein
shaped you as an athlete? Do you feel that the city’s
environment and community played a role in your
development?
I think the fact that Bloemfontein is such a small town
helps eliminate any extra distractions and hassles.
Weekends are usually filled with sporting events, and
during the week, my parents didn’t have to travel far
distances to get to training or attend any extra sessions if
needed.
getitmagazine.co.za/bloemfontein
What are your future plans in your sporting career? Do
you have your sights set on the next Olympics or any
other major goals?
After attending the 2024 Olympics, it definitely sparked a
flame to strive towards the Games in LA 2028. I now know
more of what is required to compete at the highest level and
take all the highs and lows as learning lessons while I strive
towards that goal.
What advice would you give to young, aspiring athletes,
especially those from South Africa, who dream of
reaching the Olympic stage one day?
To stay committed to their dreams, never give up on yourself.
Regardless of your background or current situation, you
never know when things may turn in your favour. No one
can take your hard work and the extra effort that you put in
away from you. It’s all in your hands, so don’t wait for the right
opportunities to come to you – create them.
Outside of sports, what are some of your personal
interests or passions? How do you balance your life as an
elite athlete with other aspects of your life?
I really enjoy spending quality time with my family. My
brother and I often take trips to go fishing, which is always a
good getaway to relax from the everyday routine.
“Sharing
the Olympic
experience with
my brother made
it all the more
special.”
Hellenes proudly take
‘care of strangers’
The Bloemfontein Hellenic
Community (BHC) was founded
in 1956 by various Hellenes,
some of who can trace
their arrival on our shores
back to just after the
Anglo Boer War. The
BHC continues to
remain one of the
oldest, structured,
Mediterranean
organisations in
South Africa. Over the
years, Hellenes of all walks
have assimilated well into
the South African culture,
further allowing the development
of a sub-culture of its own. As a cultural and nonprofit
organisation, the BHC continues to work on
its mandate, focusing on the sustainability of its
unique South African, Hellenic identity. According
to the community, this unique cultural and
traditional diversity continues to add to the rich
tapestry, that is South Africa. To do so, it continues
annually with projects aimed at ensuring the
organisation’s self-sustainability and charity. One of
the most popular and successful being the Annual
Hellenic Golf Day. The community takes pride in the
fact that these projects have allowed many in the
greater community of Bloemfontein to experience
the true meaning of Philoxenia, a Hellenic concept
described best as the ‘care of strangers’. As with all
communities, during the pandemic, the BHC lost
one of its most loved priests to Covid-19. Since
then, priests had to be flown in for Sunday services,
funerals, christenings and weddings.
Funds raised at events hosted by the BHC continue
to ensure the financial strength to sustain the
community’s religious and cultural needs, while
the search is on for a new priest. Further to
the above, the community boasts its very own
language school which continues to ensure that as
a community, their unique and ancient language
does not fade away into obscurity.
The entire
Hellenic
Community of
to congratulate the
extraordinary achievement
Indoor plant of the month
Venus flytrap is a carnivorous little
plant that sounds creepy enough for
Halloween hi-jinks but is actually quite
practical and beautiful in a bizarre
kind of way. The leaves act as fly traps,
with the inner part of the leaf looking
like a pink mouth surrounded by
spiny, sharp teeth. Along comes a fly
and the leaf snaps shut.
When grown indoors the Venus
flytrap needs at least six hours of sun,
so it will thrive in a sunny room, on a
windowsill or on the patio. Place the
plant in a 2 to 4cm deep saucer filled
with water. To prevent it from rotting,
let the tray dry out for a short period
every week but never let the plant
dry out completely as this will kill it.
There is no need to fertilise because
the flies provide all the nutrients the
plant needs.
In Winter the plant goes dormant
and dies down. Move it to a cool area
so that it stays dormant. Water less,
keeping the soil lightly moist. Come
Summer, move it back into the sun.
Veggie of the month
Squash Bennings Green is a quick and easy
to grow heirloom patty pan squash, that is regarded as
one of the tastiest of the Summer squash varieties -
with a nutty, slightly sweet flavour. The saucer shaped
fruit has scalloped edges and is pale green
when young, maturing to a creamy white. The
medium sized bushy plant is a prolific producer
throughout Summer, with the first fruit ready to
harvest within 50 days of germination. Sow seed
directly into the soil in a sunny position, in fertile, well
composted soil. Water around the base of the plant
and don’t allow it to completely dry out. The fruit is at
its tastiest when eaten young and green.
Older fruit can be added to slow cooked stews,
casseroles and potjies. Details: kirchhoffs.co.za
• It is still a good time to plant Summer flowers like impatiens
and begonias for shade, and dahlias, gazanias, gaillardia, gaura,
marigolds, portulaca and salvia for sun.
• Feed roses and hydrangeas once a month and water more often if
it gets very hot. Renew mulch to keep the soil moist for longer.
• Succession sowing of most vegetables can be continued up
until the end of this month.
• In the absence of rain, water deeply at least once a week.
• To prevent fungus diseases in the lawn, do not water during the
hottest time of the day. Rather water early in the morning or late
afternoon.
On October 5, 2024, the beautiful
grounds of Lion Lodge came alive
with laughter, excitement, and an
overwhelming sense of love as the
highly anticipated Wedding Expo took center
stage. This event brought together an array
of talented vendors, each showcasing their
unique offerings to future brides and grooms
from Bloemfontein and surrounding towns.
The magic of the day was palpable, and it
undoubtedly left a lasting impression on all
who attended.
As the organizers of this event, we had high
expectations, but we are thrilled to report that
those expectations were not just met; they
were blown away! From the moment the doors
opened, couples were greeted with a feast
for the senses. Elegant floral arrangements,
stunning bridal gowns, delectable catering
samples, and innovative décor ideas filled the
venue, creating an enchanting atmosphere
that set the stage for endless possibilities.
The success of the expo was not just in the
abundance of options available to the bridal
parties but also in the camaraderie and spirit of
collaboration that permeated the day. Vendors
from various sectors of the wedding industry
came together, showcasing their expertise
and creativity. Their passion and dedication
were evident, turning this expo into a true
celebration of love and partnership.
We are incredibly grateful to all the vendors
who participated, each playing a vital role
in making the day a huge success. Your hard
work, creativity, and commitment to excellence
did not go unnoticed. From florists to
photographers, caterers to cake designers, you
all contributed to an unforgettable experience
for couples planning their special day.
“Here’s to love, laughter, and a future
brimming with unforgettable memories!”
The expo culminated in a series of exciting
giveaways, creating even more buzz and
anticipation among the attendees. We extend
our heartfelt congratulations to the bridal party
who won the grand prize, ensuring their wedding
journey is filled with joy and support. Additionally,
congratulations are in order for the lucky couple
who secured a discounted voucher at Sure Etnique
Travel, taking their honeymoon dreams one step
closer to reality.
As we reflect on the success of Lion Lodge's
Wedding Expo, we are filled with gratitude for the
community that came together to celebrate love.
The day served as a reminder of the beauty of
collaboration and the excitement that comes with
planning one of life’s most cherished events.
Thank you to everyone who joined us on this
special day. We can’t wait to see the incredible
weddings that will result from the connections
made at the expo.

Slack-packing through the
De Hoop Nature Reserve
Four days of walking and exploring the beauty of the De Hoop Nature Reserve ...
enjoying the wealth of marine, bird and animal life and discovering rare plants.
And at the end of each day’s hike, tucking into gourmet meals and staying over in a
luxurious, comfortable villa. Ramblers dreams are made of this.
Slack-packing adventures are made for those of us who love to walk
through magnificent reserves, connect with nature, but aren’t that
keen on the whole camping-in-the-middle-of-nowhere thing! After a
strenuous day, the last thing we want is to fiddle around with tent poles
and try to rustle up something on an open fire.
So we’re mad about the newly launched The De Hoop Trail: Vlei to
Whales ... a fully catered and guided four day, three night experience
where you’ll cover about 38km through the pristine De Hoop Nature
and Marine Reserve. One of the largest natural areas managed by
CapeNature, it’s just a wonderful four days of sea, deserted beaches,
exploring the Ramsar-listed vlei, wide open spaces, coastal fynbos, and
diverse animal and bird life, including the endangered Cape Vulture
and the very best whale watching.
Guests stay in the De Hoop Collection’s De Mond Villa, a newly
restored and refurbished Villa right on the edge of the Ramsar-listed
vlei. An exclusive blend of authenticity, luxury and comfort, the five
en-suite bedroomed De Mond Villa offers awesome interior decor,
Wi-Fi, a private outside area with barbeque and swimming pool and
the most incredible views. It is completely off the grid (thanks to a
combination of solar and gas facilities) and being right on the edge of
the vlei spectacular birdlife awaits you, plus the possible sightings of
wild bush pigs, otters, rock dassies, herds of Eland and even leopard
tracks. Should the villa already be booked, The Collection’s historic
Melkkamer Homestead on the opposite side of the vlei is offered as
an alternative. And you won’t go hungry ... guests tuck into breakfasts
or brunches, lunches and picnics, snacks and dinners.
De Hoop is an easy three hour drive from Cape Town or George.
A minimum of 4 guests are required - and you should be reasonably
fit to enjoy the experience. Not suitable for those under 12. The rate of
R14200 a person (valid until Sept 2025) includes the three night/four
day experience, with a guide, all meals and snacks, local house wines,
spirits, beers and soft drinks, and road transfers to and from De Mond
Villa and within De Hoop.
