The CEO of Tallink Grupp, which recently celebrated its 35th anniversary, 

is the esteemed chief executive PAAVO NÕGENE. Tallink Grupp has grown into 

the biggest shipping company in the Baltic Sea region and is constantly evolving, 

continuously perfecting its services and sustainability. In addition to steering 

the course for his own company, Paavo Nõgene is also helping to change Estonia 

for the better by drawing attention to key economic and social issues.

As the CEO of Tallink Grupp you have more 

than 5000 colleagues across different 

countries, where the company operates. 

No other company in Estonia is that big. What 

are the values you live by in your company? 

People are at the heart of everything we do. 

Both as colleagues and as clients. We offer our 

services to people and our services are offered by 

people. Even the service provider of the future – 

AI – is taught by people. And even though the 

world around is changing and our company with 

it, we are and will be a people’s company. 

Are you available for all your colleagues? 

I wrote a letter to my colleagues on 1 May 2018, 

promising an open-door policy so everyone in 

Tallink could always come to me with whatever 

was on their mind. This is how it has been and 

will continue to be. 

Your life is very scheduled. What time does 

your workday start and what do you do first? 

I wake up at 6:00 and I am in the office by 7:00 

every workday. The quiet hours of the early 

morning are great for kickstarting the day, getting 

an overview of current events, and familiarizing 

myself with the plans for the day ahead. 

Tallink’s slogan is “The Nicest Way Together”. 

What is Tallink’s unique selling point compared 

to its Scandinavian competitors? 

We offer a high-quality transportation service 

but also memorable experiences in a modern, 

environmentally friendly and comfortable setting. 

Our team works hard every day to be the best in 

our field. I think one of our trump cards is that 

we do not compromise on quality. 

You are like a Renaissance man, with an incredibly 

colourful background. Your father Endel 

Nõgene is a beloved conductor, and you started 

out in the theatre, performing in the choir of 

the opera Carmen as a little boy. You went on 

to produce musicals in Vanemuine Theatre, later 

becoming the general manager of that same 

theatre. After that, you were the Secretary- 

General for the Ministry of Culture… How has 

a 22-year career in the arts helped you in 

your job as Tallink’s CEO? 

The arts have always been underfunded so the people 

who work in that field have had to operate very 

efficiently. That experience also comes in handy 

when running a company. On the other hand, cultural 

awareness has its merits. As an executive, my 

background in the arts has maybe broadened my 

horizon, and given me a more empathetic nature.

BEAUTY I 

There are pianos on Tallink’s vessels. The newest 

ship MyStar has an Estonia grand piano, which 

plays by itself but can also be played by 

passengers. How often do you play the piano? 

I have not learnt to play the piano, even though 

my mother is a piano teacher. But everyone on 

MyStar is welcome to sit behind the piano and 

play – that’s what the instrument is there for. 

Do you relax by listening to music or do you 

prefer the sound of silence? Do you like classical 

music? What kind of music do you listen to? 

I’m very flexible when it comes to music. I listen 

to good music :-) But I do indeed relax better in 

silence, on an exercise bike or while traveling. 

Tallink has 14 vessels and 40 captains. 

When you started this job, did you go aboard 

all the ships in your Baltic Sea fleet? How often 

do you visit the ships and meet the captains? 

Yes, I visit all our ships and their teams regularly, 

at least a couple of times a year. I talk to different 

colleagues, including captains, and keep myself 

up to date with what is going well and what 

needs improvement. 

What qualities make a good captain? 

A captain must be somewhat of a perfectionist, 

an experienced leader, and a psychologist. 

They say there are no seamen in politics because 

there is no room for diplomacy at sea. People 

expect a leader to make clear decisions. Do 

constantly evolving and challenging times 

cause decision making to be twice as hard? 

Based on my own experience I would say that 

Estonia, Finland and Sweden do have some “seamen” 

or straightforward politicians in their ranks. 

Sadly, not many though :-) But yes, our senior 

management’s decision-making skills and capabilities 

were truly tested during the COVID crisis. 

The way we came out of that crisis really is testament 

to the fact that our management has all 

those skills and capabilities. 

You were asked to join Tallink Grupp as CEO in 

2018 and you only had 12 hours to think about it. 

Was it the biggest decision of your life? 

The number of hours I had for decision-making 

was actually less, in single digits. I hope it’s too 

early to talk about what has been the biggest decision 

of my life. It may be yet to come. But was it a

big decision to move from the arts to running 

Estonia’s biggest company? Of course, it was, but 

I have enjoyed every moment of it. Interestingly, 

I have to say that the COVID crisis was a fascinating 

time for me as an executive. Tough and exhausting 

but also interesting at the same time. 

You always wear an impeccable suit and a 

white shirt. What do you wear in your free time? 

Do you even have free time? 

If the weather is warm and it is suitable, I will 

happily wear shorts and a polo shirt. But yes, 

professionally I have stuck to a certain style, 

and it works for me. I guess this is the phase 

I am in at the moment.

How do you keep fit, both mentally and 

physically? 

I try to keep a good work/home life balance. 

Understandably I don’t always succeed because 

I take my work with me everywhere, but I like 

my work. Four times a week I try to burn off 

my excess energy on an exercise bike. 

Who has been your greatest teacher? 

What values have your parents instilled in you? 

My parents have given me intelligence, and my 

ability to read and interpret people and situations. 

I’ve had many influential teachers, most of whom 

are unaware they’ve had an impact on me. 

I like to observe people and make note 

of what I wouldn’t want to be like – 

how I wouldn’t want to behave or what 

I wouldn’t want to do. I carry these 

thoughts with me and create my 

own Paavo. 

What is the most special souvenir 

you’ve ever brought back from a trip? 

I’m not much of a souvenir buyer. I’d 

rather bring back something delicious 

or practical. Whether it is a fresh mango, 

a peppermint nasal stick or a new tie. 

The shipping magnate 

Aristotle Onassis has said: 

„We must free ourselves of 

the hope that the sea will ever rest. We must 

learn to sail high winds.“ What has six years 

of being the Chairman of the Management 

Board of Tallink Grupp taught you? 

My time in Tallink, which includes the years of 

the COVID pandemic and war in Europe, has really 

cemented the notion that anything is possible. 

You have to work hard, find colleagues who can 

help you solve problems, and the storm will pass. 

There is a saying that „Anyone can hold the helm 

when the sea is calm“. The last four years have 

required us all to have plans B, C, D… Has that 

need for extreme flexibility created innovative 

solutions? 

Tallink has used the crises of the 

last four years to drive change, and 

we have definitely changed. Some 

things we have done well and some 

have not gone as planned. That’s 

life. But Tallink has a very strong 

team and if there’s ever a situation 

for which we don’t have a contingency 

plan, then I’m confident we’ll 

come up with one very quickly. 

Is it possible to make Tallink even 

better? 

Of course, the world is changing and Tallink with it. 

In 2024 the Estonian president Alar Karis awarded 

you The Order of the White Star III Class. 

What does this recognition mean to you? 

I am grateful for this recognition, of course I am. 

I guess it means that I have done something in my 

44 years that has mattered to people. I don’t think 

too much of myself, I concentrate more on other 

people. 

You are a man of action. What next, what do you 

dream of? What makes your eyes sparkle? 

I hope that after all these crises – COVID, war, 

recession – there will be a calmer period 

where travelling and doing business are 

more carefree. Maybe that would allow 

me to worry less, although I’m not sure 

I’d know how to do that :-) This summer 

I never made it to Pühajärve, to take 

the boat out onto the lake and just 

relax. 

What should we wish to you for 

the future? May the wind always be 

in your sails!

Tell us a little about yourself. 

I am actually an environmental scientist by 

education, and for the first 10 years of my professional 

career, I dealt with people's environmental 

concerns in the local government as well as in one 

of the largest waste management companies in 

Estonia. However, I changed my professional 

course 180 degrees eight years ago and arrived at 

Tallink Grupp where I have held various positions 

in the perfume and cosmetics category. 

There is always something exciting happening 

in the field of perfumes and cosmetics, 

so what’s the latest news? 

In the autumn-winter period, the upcoming 

holiday season becomes important for perfumes. 

Light summer perfumes are left behind and rich, 

deeper and warmer notes take their place. This fall, 

new flankers have been added to the original versions 

of several well-known and loved fragrances. 

For example, Libre by YSL, La Vie Est Belle by 

Lancôme and L'Interdit by Givenchy received a 

new version of women's perfumes, and Boss Bottled 

by Hugo Boss and Dior’s Sauvage series 

from the men's side. Among newcomers, Rabanne's 

Million Gold for Her fragrance and 

Barenia by Hermes take centre stage. 

What kind of perfumes do you prefer? 

My own perfume preferences have 

changed like the seasons over the years 

of working in this category, moving 

from fresher citrus notes to 

deeper woody notes. At the 

moment, I'm somewhere 

in between, and on my 

fragrance shelf you can find

I INSPIRATION 

What are your favorite autumn-winter 

colours to wear? 

I have to admit that, on a personal level, black 

tends to set the tone in my outfits during the 

autumn-winter. However, burgundy, khaki and 

beige offer a complement and change to black. 

I admire the yellow and red tones of fall leaves 

when walking outside. 

Are you a minimalist or a maximalist? 

A minimalist in my view of things, a maximalist 

in setting goals and demands for myself. I prefer 

an environment where less is more. Of course, 

life with a teenager and a small child tends to 

sabotage this goal, but in general, I make more 

thoughtful purchases than emotional ones. 

Of course, this principle usually 

tends to be forgotten on board 

our ships, and I always come 

away with a lap full of candy, a 

nice piece of jewelry or a pair of 

shoes. However, the maximalist 

in me emerges by setting goals 

and demands for myself. Already 

when I was still in school, 

I didn't like going to class unprepared. 

The same principle has 

accompanied me into adult life 

as well.

The motto that speaks to me in everyday life is 

the golden rule „Don't do to others what you don't 

want done to you“ which I try to pass on to my 

children as well. Sitting at my desk, I like to quote 

the snail from the Estonian children's show 

"The Adventures of Acorn": "Onward and 

forward, not a step back!" 

„ I feel especially good whenever 

I have the opportunity 

to join my older daughter 

in horseback riding.” 

Red lips and iridescent glitters are this 

year’s winter makeup trends. What is your 

lipstick of choice? 

Red lipstick, Dior Rouge 999 or Armani Lip 

Maestro Liquid Lipstick are my favourites. 

But in general, you rarely see me with red lips, 

I prefer lips in natural colours. One of my favorites 

at the moment is definitely Yves Saint-Laurent’s 

Loveshine Lipstick, but I also want to give praise 

to Shiseido ColorGel Lip Balm and Clarins 

Lip Comfort Oil, which I always have in my 

bag just in case. 

We need to treat ourselves to be happy. 

What is your best treat? 

My best treat for myself at the moment is quality 

sleep. I highly value every minute of sleep since 

my sleep cycles have been very messed up in 

recent years. Also, I've been trying to take more 

time for myself lately. I feel especially good 

whenever I have the opportunity to join my 

older daughter in horseback riding. As she likes 

to say: No moment is wasted that is spent in 

the saddle!
