Traditional fare in the
mix for Diwali festivities
Arvida Ilam retirement community residents and staff came together to
celebrate Diwali by mixing pakora, a traditional Indian savoury dish. The
fritters – made with chickpea flour, grated potato, onion, baking soda,
pepper, salt, dried coriander, garlic and sesame seeds – went down well
with the residents. Traditional Indian outfits were donned and
the festival of light celebrations also included a fashion show and
dance performances.

an early
new year
THE BIGGEST kids’ party in the
city will take over North Hagley
Park on New Year’s Eve.
The NYE Kids’ Countdown will
kick off the city council’s New
Year’s Eve celebrations from 4–7pm
on December 31.
City council manager of arts and
events Lucy Blackmore said the
free event will be “great fun for the
whole family”.
“There’ll be dance battles,
games, and performances by some
talented tamariki – including a
young band who have aptly named
themselves New Year’s Kids’ Band.”
DJs and dancers from That Dance
Studio will also be performing.
“It’s about creating an
unforgettable experience for
our tamariki and encouraging
them to get amongst the action and
have a blast – all before bedtime,”
Blackmore said.
Closing out the event at 7pm will
be a mock countdown with
streamers and confetti canons.
Following the kids’ event, the
celebrations roll on with main
show, featuring an international
Queen covers band and local acts
Castaway and Tattoo Voodoo, from
8pm until midnight.
Both the NYE Kids’ Countdown
and NYE24 events are smoke-free,
vape-free and alcohol-free. A range
of food and drink vendors will be
onsite.

Best bike rides for less confident cyclists
Warm weather and
long evenings beckon,
so why not reacquaint
yourself with your bike?
BIKING IS A great way to travel
a little further than you might on
foot, get the benefits of exercise
and fresh air, and find new
corners of the city to discover and
enjoy.
Not everyone feels super
confident on a bike, so here is a
list of fun and scenic trips suitable
for less experienced riders. Most
are on shared paths so having a
bell on your bike will be helpful
for alerting walkers that you’re
approaching.
The River Promenade
Follow the wide shared zone
that runs beside the Ōtākaro
Avon River from Christchurch
Hospital, past the National
Earthquake Memorial and
alongside The Terrace with its
cafes and pubs, through Victoria
Square to the famous Margaret
Mahy Playground.
This 2km ride can be done
in reverse and extended by
connecting to the shared use
paths in Hagley Park.
Explore Hagley Park
Take a ride on the shared
paths that criss-cross Hagley
Park, past sights like the
wildflower gardens, Victoria
Lake and the band rotunda.
The best entrance point for
North Hagley is from Armagh
St at the corner of Rolleston Ave.
For South Hagley, enter from
the Hagley Oval carpark on
Riccarton Ave.
The total circumference of both
parks is about 6km but there’s a
variety of pathways and this can
be increased or decreased as you
wish.
Take the Uni-Cycle
This route is regularly
mentioned as people’s ‘favourite
cycleway’ in the city.
Uni-Cycle links Ilam and
Canterbury University to the
central city, via Mona Vale,
Riccarton Bush and North Hagley
Park.
On weekends, you can ride
this scenic, tree-lined cycleway
to Mona Vale’s beautiful grounds
PEDAL POWER: There are plenty of options for cyclists of all ages and abilities to get out
and explore the city.

Papanui Parallel major cycle
route.
Scenic Coastal Pathway
Ideal for newer cyclists, this
seaside pathway hugs the coastline
for 6.5km offering stunning views
over the water from Ferrymead to
Scarborough beach.
It’s perfect for all ages and
abilities as there are access points
and facilities dotted along the way.
Cycle to Redcliffs for ice-cream
and coffee, then head to Sumner
beach and visit the cafes, bars and
shops in the village.

Surf club’s decades of protecting

to mark its 55th
anniversary on
November 9
SPENCER PARK Surf Life Saving
Club started in 1969 when
Ian Graham and Bob Tremewan
saw the need for a surf club at
Spencer Park, especially after
hearing of a drowning in 1968
and also with the expansion of
the adjacent motor camp.
In May, Graham and Tremewan
held an informal meeting
at a motel where they, with the
addition of Ian Gregg and Dr
John Campbell (both from Waimairi
SLSC) decided to form a
surf club at Spencer Park.
They rang Canterbury Surf
Life Saving president Merv
Restall as a courtesy and then
applied for affiliation with the
New Zealand Surf Lifesaving
Association. Yellow and red
were chosen as the club colours.
The club’s inaugural meeting
was held on June 26, 1969, where
a committee was elected. Barry
LONG SERVICE: The Spencer Beach Surf Life Saving Club is celebrating its 55th anniversary
with a jubilee dinner at its newly re-built clubrooms. Over the years, the club’s members have
taken part in many competitions, including the 1982 national champs, below left, and the
1981 four-man canoe event.
Rich, chairman of the Waimairi
County Council opened the
club’s first season on November
23, and patrols started that day.
Soon, rescues were as common
as they are now.
Club patrols for this year run
on weekends from November
9 to March 16. During school
holidays (December 16 to
January 31) there will be paid
lifeguards from Surf Life Saving
New Zealand on patrol during
the week.
Over the years, the club has had
national success in surf life saving
competitions, especially on the
sand and in IRB (inflatable rescue
boat)racing. Its greatest success
was winning the National IRB
Club Championships in 2003. In
recent times the club has also won
the South Island IRB trophy.
Last season at the Southern
Region awards night, Spencer
Park won club of the year,
volunteer of the year and the
Southern Region lifeguard of the
year for the third time.
These days, the club is well
equipped to meet all challenges.
Its new facility has a full view of
the beach allowing lifeguards to
see more of the water’s edge and
any members of the public before
they get into trouble.
It has storage for all the modern
equipment and a function room
in high demand as a wedding
venue. There are IRBs ready to go
and enough boards and skis for all
members.
A defibrillator is also stored and
ready for use in the clubrooms
if required. The facility is also
equipped with full safety and
research gear to be used when
needed.
Said club president Troy Reed:

family friendly environment
and the opportunities it gives all
ages especially for its younger
members.

and are given the opportunity
to train and also compete in
junior competitions.
“As they get older they are
then given the opportunity to
train and pass their lifeguard
award. The club ensures there
are highly qualified lifeguards
on patrol every weekend for

With Covid and several
other disruptions, the club
decided the best way to
mark its 55 year anniversary
was with a special jubilee
celebration.
The event will be marked
with a special dinner for all
present and past members at
the recently re-built clubhouse
on Saturday, November 9.
The club’s evening of celebration
will start at about
4.30pm with informal drinks
upstairs at the new clubrooms,
followed by short tours of the
downstairs facilities. Memorabilia
and a power point slide
show of the club’s past and
present will be there for all to
see.
The formal part of the
evening will start at about 6pm
with dinner and some short
speeches reflecting on the last
55 years and also the club’s
present day activities.
Three of the four founding
members will be attending
the jubilee dinner but
unfortunately Ian Gregg has
passed away.
