HIS HAIR

In it’s fledgling days, the company that would become

known as Charlie Miller was a men’s hairdressers.

After training at Bob's in the West Port, Edinburgh, Charlie

became self- employed when he was 20. In 1965 he and his wife

Janet opened a salon called ‘His Hair’ in Prestonfield Housing

Scheme, with Scottish footballing legend John Greig cutting the

ribbon.

‘His Hair’ attracted fashionable men from all over the Lothian

area, who would queue outside for hours; something that was

unheard of at the time.

The wives of Charlie’s customers would often admire Janet’s

stylish hair, and began asking Charlie to do the same for them,

leading Charlie to train himself as a Ladies Hairdresser. The

salon became unisex, with precision cuts and blow-drying in

high demand.

Achievement Awards .

Colour Trophy in 2018.

Charlie, far left, sweeps the salon floor in Bob’s.

In 1967 ‘His Hair’ moved to Rose Street, which was the place

to be 1960's Edinburgh. Customers became ‘clients’ and

appointments became the norm. Bookings for Saturdays

were essential thanks to the salon's growing popularity.

By 1971, the salon had moved to Stafford Street with a new

name; Charlie Miller Hairdressing.

Since then, the company has expanded to four busy salons

with around 100 staff.

Over the years the list of services has expanded with the

times; the first male perm in Edinburgh was done by Janet

herself in 1967, and this technique has been a staple ever

since. Colour was introduced to Charlie Miller clients in the

‘70’s and has moved on from the capped highlights of the

‘80’s to elaborate and creative colour techniques. Styles, of

course, have come and gone but gents cutting, whether

‘classic’ or ‘creative’ have always been a core part of our

heritage. With the rise of barbering our stylists have adopted

new techniques and, as is the nature of our business, are

continually learning.

Charlie himself has always been passionate about training.

4.

Now Charlie’s sons Jason and Josh are proud to watch some of

the young hairdressers share their passion for Gents cutting.

Alison, Senior Stylist from Holy Corner, and Kieran Senior Stylist

from South St. Andrew Street, have formed a fantastic

partnership, regularly hosting training evenings for all stylists on

things like clipper work and skin fades.

The two are certainly the go-to for advice on new styles and

techniques as well as the ones with their finger firmly on the

pulse on what will be trending for men's hair.

“I’ve noticed a lot of my Gents keeping their hair longer these

days.” Says Kieran. “There’s still a lot of clipper cuts and fades

coming in but I have seen a lot of longer hair, either with flowing

hairstyles or textured, modern-looking mullets.” Kieran predicts

we will continues to see more longer styles into 2025.

Kieran was the most recent winner of ‘Gents Hairdresser of the

Year’ at our Achievement Awards, partly due to how confidently

and seamlessly he took on many of Ian Blyth’s male clients when

Ian retired.

Men’s hair is the focal point for this timeless photo shoot

from 2014

Ian, former director of our South St. Andrew Street salon, is a

master of his craft but was also invaluable when it came to

coaching and training. He began his hairdressing career at the

age of 20 whilst simultaneously undertaking an apprenticeship as

a British Telecommunication Engineer, meaning he is no stranger

to incredibly hard work and the immense drive only possible

through the sheer love of your work.

Such was his passion and desire, that within one year he was a

fully qualified hairdresser. His amazing ability to help young

hairdressers visualise a cut and expertly explain what he was

doing and why has been invaluable to Kieran, both in his work

and his teaching.

Poignantly, we are seeing many of our trainees taking a leap and

entering gents hair into our in-house competitions. In previous

years, doing gents hair might have been shied away from, opting

for the ‘safer’ route of long, women’s hair which they learn first.

“For the first time in Edinburgh you could discuss how you would

like your hair styled and he would give his opinion and actually

show you as he was cutting what he was trying to achieve.”

Charlie with some of his most loyal clients, many

of whom he met in Bob’s, pictured for his 50th

anniversary in business

Over the decades it’s been brilliant to see more men confidently

embracing hair salons and knowing exactly what styles they

want. Men are no longer just opting for a quick trim - they’re

increasingly interested in bespoke cuts, colour treatments, and

grooming services that allow them to express their personal

style. Salons are no longer seen as just a space for women; men

are recognising the value of professional hair care and styling just

as much. This shift reflects a broader movement towards selfcare

and self-expression, with men becoming more engaged in

their hair journeys, making salons inclusive spaces for everyone.

Two entries for the 3rd Year Trainee Competition

in 2024.

We are deeply proud that Charlie Miller paid a part in this from

our inception in Prestonfield in 1965.

Cat Nicholson and Jason Miller paid homage to our heritage

with a Gents photoshoot in 2018. The hair for the collection

captured a sophisticated and highly groomed aesthetic, their

work offering a contemporary nod to the artistic heritage and

barbering culture of Charlie Miller, blending these influences

with the subtle and textural nuances of bespoke tailoring.

George Pryde, a client of Charlie’s since he opened His Hair,

told us a few years back how clear it was that Charlie wanted

gents to have as much autonomy over their hair as women.

5.

At Charlie Miller, we take immense pride in our rich heritage of

men’s hairdressing, a legacy built on creativity, precision, and a

deep understanding of barbering traditions. As we continue to

evolve, we remain committed to honing our skills, embracing new

trends, and offering innovative services tailored to modern men.

The future of men’s hair is incredibly exciting, and we are

enthusiastic about the opportunities ahead, as we explore fresh

techniques and styles that will shape the industry in the coming

years. We look forward to continuing this journey, delivering

exceptional results while honouring our past.

OUR

FAVOURITE

CITY

BREAKS

The Charlie Miller team reveal

their dream mini breaks for

Autumn/Winter, and most

importantly, share their hair tips

for travel!

Lauren’s top recommendation for an Autumn/Winter city break

is Venice, Italy.

Venice makes a great autumn and winter city break because it’s

much quieter after the summer crowds leave, and the cool, crisp

air adds a cosy vibe, making it perfect for exploring landmarks

like St. Mark’s Basilica. Try traditional Venetian food, relax in

cafés, or even catch the famous Carnival in February if you visit

later in the season.

Lauren,

Holy Corner

Lauren’s favourite product to take away is L'Oréal Super Dust. She swears by it to add

volume to flat hair, and tells us that it’s perfect for adding texture to a messy bun or

ponytail on hair that’s not freshly washed for an easy but on-trend solution.

Lori recommends Seville, Spain if you’re not quite ready to face the UK

temperatures.

Seville is an ideal spot for an autumn or winter city break, thanks to its

mild temperatures and sunny days that linger long after summer. You

can explore stunning landmarks like the Alcázar and Plaza de España

without huge crowds. The city’s streets are full of life but with a more

laid-back, local feel. It’s the perfect time to enjoy tapas in traditional

bars or wander through the gardens. Seville in the off-season is all

about warmth, culture, and a relaxed pace.

Lori,

South St Andrew St

Lori’s best hair tip for heading off on holiday is to get a fresh haircut just before you go so that it’s at it’s easiest to

manage. An especially good tip for her fellow curly-haired people as hair is less likely to tangle when it’s had a

fresh chop, and of course on an extremely practical level, the less hair, the quicker the blow dry!

6.

Millie

Holy Corner

Millie’s dream destination for the colder months is New

York.

There’s so much to do, from catching a Broadway show

to wandering through Central Park, whether it’s

covered in autumn leaves or snow. You can visit some

of the world’s best museums, like the MoMA or the Met,

and grab a slice of famous New York pizza between all

the sightseeing. Plus, there’s nothing quite like the buzz

of Times Square, shopping in SoHo, or checking out the

skyline from the Empire State Building.

Millie recommends a strong hairspray to fix a slicked back bun or ponytail to avoid having to

wash your hair quite so much while you’re away. Also a great option if you want to just blast

dry your hair and pull it back; less time for styling, more time for enjoying your holiday!

One of Jade’s favourite spots for autumn is Ibiza, Spain.

Ibiza makes a great autumn city break, with warm weather lasting well into October. It’s a more relaxed time to

explore Dalt Vila, hit the quieter beaches, and enjoy long lunches by the sea without the summer crowds. Plus,

autumn is when the island’s legendary closing parties happen, with big events running through September and

into early October. After that, things wind down, so late October is the latest you'd go for the perfect mix of fun

and chill vibes before the island fully hibernates for winter.

What’s more, it’s far more budget-friendly at this time of year.

Jade swears by a Mousse like our own Volume Mousse to enhance

curls and enhance waves. This is the perfect time to experiment

with your hair’s natural texture, as well as save time or avoid

washing every day. Beachy waves are the perfect for Ibiza vibes.

Use a salt spray to take them to the next level, but remember some

extra TLC will be needed when you do wash and condition your

hair!

Karen is a big fan of Barcelona in the autumn. Barcelona is a great place

to visit towards the end of the year when the city bursts into a beautiful

mix of colours and experiences. The weather is just right—mild and

perfect for wandering around iconic spots like the Sagrada Familia and

Park Güell without the summer crowds. Plus, autumn brings a lineup of

food festivals and cultural events that really showcase the city's vibrancy.

You can also dig into seasonal dishes made with fresh local ingredients.

With its stunning architecture, gorgeous coastal views, and a laid-back

vibe, Barcelona in autumn is simply perfect.

Karen preaches the wonders of the Soleil range year round, but it’s a no-brainer

when you’re spending time in the sun or the sea. She loves the shampoo and

masque, ridding your hair of sun cream, salt, sand and chlorine as well as

giving it a much-needed post-sun hydration shot. The perfect after sun for your

Jenni prefers cold places to hot but we try not to hold this against

her... the cool air and changing leaves give Copenhagen a cosy feel

that she loves. The city's charming streets are less crowded, making

it perfect for wanders along the canals or visits to the iconic Tivoli

Gardens, which lights up with stunning autumn displays. You can

dive into the local café culture, enjoying warm drinks and pastries

while soaking up the atmosphere. With its mix of rich history,

unique architecture, and a fantastic food, Copenhagen in autumn

offers an escape that combines adventure with Denmark's

trademark chill vibes.

Jenni’s best hair trip for travel is co-ordination! This is perfect if you’re with a group. Have someone pack the

shampoo and conditioner (“Charlie Miller’s Hydrate range is versatile enough that it worked for everyone when we

travelled to Denmark” she says). “Someone else brings the dryer, straightener, curlers and products and you’re fully

kitted out! If that fails... go on holiday with a hairdresser!”

WHAT IS

BRONDE

HAIR?

10.

Bronde isn’t just a passing

trend—it’s the perfect

blend of blonde and

brunette that’s here to

stay.

This effortlessly chic

shade adds depth,

dimension and shine, and

is proving to be a lowmaintenance,

universally

flattering favourite. Ready

to go Bronde? You’ll never

look back!

11.

BRONDE IS MORE

THAN JUST A TREND

It’s the perfect blend of blonde and brunette shades.

It creates a sun-kissed, natural look that’s neither too

light nor too dark, making it versatile for any skin tone.

It can be tailored to you by your stylist to lean more

brown or more blonde depending on what works best

for your skin tone, hair type, hair condition and

lifestyle. The key to achieving the best result lies in

selecting the right shade

WHY IS IT SO POPULAR?

Bronde has become a staple in all of our salons because the blend of

dark and light shades give a multi-dimensional look that mimics natural

highlights, making it universally flattering. This colour also works well

for various hair types and lengths.

Also a huge draw is that it’s a low-maintenance colour. The blend of

tones makes regrowth less obvious, allowing you to stretch out salon

visits while still looking polished.

YEAR-ROUND APPEAL

Bronde isn’t just a summer look! The warm blend works beautifully in

any season, adding brightness to winter months and enhancing your

sun-kissed glow in summer.

It can also be warmed up, toned down or brightened with relative

ease (depending on the condition of your hair, of course! Meaning you

can switch things up without it feeling to daunting a change.

Not sure if Bronde is right for you? We offer complimentary, no

obligation colour consultations to help you choose. Just bring along

your ideas, photos and an open mind!

INTERVIEW

30 MINUTES WITH

Having started her career with Charlie

Miller just before COVID struck, Molly

Rufus’s training was put on hiatus as the

world went into lockdown. Like many

other apprentices at the time, Molly

faced a challenge no other hairdressing

trainees had when she returned; luckily,

Molly thrived and has achieved a

considerable amount in the years since.

Molly

EARLY YEARS

When Molly began her career as a ‘Saturday girl’

aged just 15, hairdressing wasn’t a new concept

to her; her school, Firhill, offered a hairdressing

class, complete with a fully kitted out salon and

her teacher encouraged her to try to find a

Saturday job in the industry. She spent the class

washing hair, curling, braiding, and got an insight

into what they would learn in their Hairdressing

SVQ. Two of her classmates worked for Charlie

Miller, and they told her how much they enjoyed

it, so Molly applied for a part time role at the end

of 2017.

She became a full-time trainee the following

September, having had to wait until she was 16

before she could leave school. Molly was still

keen to get her training underway before this

though; she would work summer holidays and

come straight from school every Wednesday for

our training evenings.

Molly is part of a big family, with lots of cousins who she

says she’s always looked up to, but she’s truly followed

her own path as the only hairstylist in her family; her

mum has a career as a reflexologist and her dad is in the

army.

Originally Molly wanted to be a shopkeeper, a pop star or

a fairy...

Her first foray into hairdressing was at a very young age

though; she chopped off her entire fringe aged 5. Molly

doesn’t remember cutting it, but does recall hiding the

hair in the bin, her mum in tears and her dad coming

home from Afghanistan to a child with an avant garde

fringe, as well as subsequent visits to the hairdressers

and multiple hats when nothing could be done... Perhaps

subconsciously her future career was to redeem this hair

horror.

MOLLY’S ADVICE FOR YOUNG HAIRDRESSERS

“Always seek out the most experienced stylists

to check your work. They’ll give you the best

constructive criticism.”

She encourages wannabe stylists to push themselves

every day; by asking to do more and taking as much

advantage as they can of training time and the experts

around them. “Even if you think you know what you’re

doing, get your work checked by someone who will

notice the tiniest hair out of place, who can see any tiny

potential improvements.”

13.

She stresses that creating the right look is not just about

hair; it comes down to the little details; the styling, the

outfit, the make-up, and finding the perfect inspiration. The

entire vibe should enhance the hair, not distract from it.

Molly’s inspiration came from the behind-the-scenes

aftermath of our annual trainee competition; about to tackle

the clean-up, Molly glanced down at a couple of used colour

bowls. Seeing copper and yellow shades side by side, she

noticed how much they complemented each other.

Finding her model was another stroke of luck: she met

Georgia when she came in for a consultation, Molly was

nervous to ask her to take part but she agreed immediately.

“I was very lucky with Georgia, she looked fantastic and was

so willing to let her do what I wanted; and her hair was

willing to do it too!”

WHAT DOES MOLLY LOVE MOST

ABOUT HER JOB?

“My favourite element of hairdressing is

definitely balayage. I think it’s what I’m

best at. I love how versatile it can be, and

getting the perfect blend is so satisfying.”

She loves the creative side of hairdressing and training.

She likes to collaborate and bounce ideas off her

colleagues. She also enjoys watching others work, and

seeing how people do things differently. “I also really

enjoy teaching the trainees.” She says. She wants them

to be excited about each and every model they do.

Molly knows her craft and is fantastic at explaining

what she’s doing and why. She loves the feeling of

imparting knowledge and sharing tips and alternative

ways of doing things that make things ‘click’ for an

apprentice.

Lauren from our Holy Corner branch had reached the final

of the Loreal Colour Trophy, which is judged at the same

event, so together the girls managed to make it fun and

relatively relaxed, appreciating the experience... up until it

was 17 Molly’s turn to stand before the judges to talk about her

colour creation.

Each finalist took their mood board into the judging panel

for an interview, and Molly distinctly remembers the sound

of her board wobbling as she shook with nerves.

Once she finished her presentation, she instantly relaxed, as

there was nothing more she could do; the models had been

styled, made up and were being judged. Now it was just a

waiting game.

When her name was finally called as the winner, Molly’s

battery had died on her phone. When she got to it, she

called her mum and dad (who were of course unbelievably

proud) and read through the stream of congratulatory

messages from the Charlie Miller team. Her boyfriend Owen

was on a flight back from Tenerife and she couldn’t wait for

him to read her messages.

She came home from London to gifts, cards and

congratulations banners in the South St Andrew Street

staffroom.

In terms of what she loves about the company, Molly

potentially gets the most excited out of every single

member of staff about our annual Achievement

Awards. She loves trying to guess who’s won, and says

she gets it right often.

She definitely didn’t predict that she’d win one herself

at our most recent ceremony; she jointly received the

very first Cat Nicholson Award alongside Lauren Tait.

It’s all a bit of a blur, and she wishes she could

remember it more clearly, but it was certainly a

surprising and emotional moment for her.

THE LOREAL COLOUR TROPHY STAR AWARD

Molly took her own advice when it came to pushing

herself to enter this prestigious competition in 2023,

and it certainly paid off when she brought home the

Star Award, fighting off fierce competition from all over

the UK.

Molly remembers the experience being a lot of fun and

would encourage anyone who’d considered it to go for

it. “Finding a model can be a wee bit stressful, but I got

so much support and got on really well with my model,

that it felt like we were on the journey together.”

14.

I.D ARTIST

Part of Molly’s prize is that she’s now a Loreal I.D artist; The

ID Artist Programme by L'Oréal Professionnel is a two-year

talent development programme full of inspirational education

and unique hairdressing opportunities for young

hairdressers, which launched in 2003.

We can’t wait to see what evolves from this for Molly over

the next few months!

A FEW OF HER FAVOURITE THINGS...

Molly is most grateful for her family and friends and her

boyfriend who’s she’s been with for almost two years. “Owen

does a lot for me, and I get on really well with his family too

which makes a massive difference.”

Her 3 wishes would be for those close to her to be happy, to

live comfortably and to stay young forever (mainly so that she

and her friends can always go out at the weekends).

She’s happiest when the sun is out and loves to go to her local

pub with a big group of friends. Her favourite spot for dinner

is Gigi’s in Bonnyrigg, and she loves her weekly sunbed (yes

we tell her off for this) and Nando’s trip with her closest

friends Becca and Devon.

She’s content being at home too, watching her favourite TV

show The Vampire Diaries. Her comfort shows are Married at

First Sight and Love Island, and her favourite movies are

comedies like Grown Ups, White Chicks or Wild Child.

QUICK QUESTIONS...

Bold, beautiful

Burgundy

This

Burgundy, and all of

it’s variations from

plum to cherry,

claret and crimson,

are everywhere this

Autumn.

deep, rich shade has

been a focal point on

fashion runways, in high

street stores, with

cosmetics, and even

interiors, and we’ve

certainly had a surge in

requests for this bold shade

in the salons too.

Burgundy is incredibly

popular right now because it

strikes the perfect balance

between boldness and

sophistication, making it a

standout colour for autumn

and winter. There’s a shade

of burgundy for everyone,

and with the right shade,

burgundy can warm up pale

skin, highlight olive tones,

and add contrast to darker

complexions. The key is in

the undertones—cooler

shades work best for fairer

skin, while warmer and

richer burgundy hues bring

out the best in medium to

deep skin tones.

This colour doesn’t just look

great; it feels right for the

season. Burgundy pairs

beautifully with autumn’s

earthy tones, like camel,

mustard, and forest green,

making your hair the perfect

accessory.

Burgundy hair gives you

that cosy, chic, and

effortlessly cool edge all at

once.

16.

Choosing the right

shade for you...

When choosing the perfect burgundy, consider your

undertones—red-toned and purple-toned variations can

create very different effects.

For those with warm or golden skin tones, a red-toned

burgundy is your best bet. Shades like mahogany or wine

will enhance your natural warmth, giving you a radiant

glow. On the other hand, if you have cool or pink

undertones, opt for a purple-toned burgundy, such as

plum or augergine. These cooler shades balance out your

complexion and add a striking contrast. For neutral or olive

skin tones, you can experiment with both red and purple

undertones, but a true burgundy—a perfect blend of red

and purple—will be especially flattering.

Make your eyes pop with the

right tone...

Opting for a creative colour means you can really adapt the tone to

your eye colour; contrast can really make your eyes stand out

Brown eyes are incredibly versatile and can be enhanced by most

shades of burgundy. A deep red-toned burgundy, like wine or

mahogany, creating a warm contrast and giving them an earthy

glow.

For blue-eyed beauties, purple-toned burgundy shades, like plum or

black cherry, create a stunning contrast. The cooler purple tones

make blue eyes appear even more vivid.

Green eyes pair beautifully with red-toned burgundy shades, such

as cranberry or merlot. The warm red hues bring out the vibrant

green in your eyes, creating a striking and intense effect.

Hazel eyes can shift between green, brown, and even gold, so a

true burgundy that balances both red and purple undertones works

wonderfully. This blend enhances the natural multicoloured flecks in

hazel eyes.

Not sure if you want to fully commit

to burgundy?

Subtle highlights or a softer balayage could feel like a big enough change without

opting for an all-over tint.

These techniques add depth to your hair, and may well mean less trips to the

salon.

That said, however, like any creative colour, it’s not always easy to keep the colour

looking vibrant. Colour safe shampoos, cold rinses and heat protectants are a

must. Red tones can wreak havoc on ones bathroom, towels and clothing too.

Still undecided? We offer free colour

consultations at all four of our city-centre salons.

CONSIDERING BECOMING A

Hair Model?

If you're considering a hair model appointment at Charlie Miller, you're certainly in for an

exciting experience! Renowned for our commitment to quality education and training, we

offer opportunities for our trainees to refine their skills through real-life practice.

But there are many misconceptions about what is involved in a model appointment. Here’s

what you can expect during this training session...

A Commitment to Education

We completely understand that being a hair model is preferred by some of our clients as a

way to keep costs down, or to be able to visit the salon more regularly. However, for us the

most important factor is the education and learning experience for our apprentice. Part of

the learning curve for them is to offer excellent customer service, an empathetic and

effective consultation and of course, a quality cut, colour or blow dry.

At Charlie Miller, every full-time trainee embarks on a comprehensive three-year

apprenticeship program. This program includes various levels of cutting, styling, and

coloring milestones that trainees must pass. Your role as a hair model is essential to this

educational process, allowing trainees to gain valuable hands-on experience while under

the guidance of qualified professionals.

Training in Action

It’s important to understand that your cut or colour will be

performed by a trainee, not a fully qualified stylist.

However, each session is carefully supervised by one of our

experienced trainers, who will guide and support the

trainee throughout the appointment. The level of support

they get to complete a task varies depending on whether

the apprentice is new to the craft or new to the technique;

some trainees will have hands on training, while others

will be monitored in stages, or observed from afar.

18.

Personalised Learning and Individual Progress

Every trainee is at a different stage in their development, and we match them with models based on their specific learning

needs. This is why we are likely to ask more in-depth questions when you call to enquire; a long, one length hair cut for

example, isn’t right for a trainee about to embark on their last year of training. We get a lot of requests for ‘more advanced’

trainees for things like one length cuts and all-over tints, which are some of the first things these aspiring hairdressers

learn; once they’ve mastered it, it’s vital they move on to something new. It’s not possible for this reason. to have a

‘regular’ hairdressing trainee; if you decide to opt for model appointments regularly, you’ll meet a whole host of

youngsters eager to learn something new. Complete restyles, intricate cuts or complex colouring techniques are often in

short supply, but this is the perfect criteria for a more advanced trainee.

This focus on real-world, hands-on practice

is essential in preparing trainees for the

dynamic nature of professional

hairdressing, as it allows them to encounter

different hair types and textures, develop

their technique, and build their confidence.

Flexibility in Time and Results

Since a trainee is still learning, the timing of your appointment

may differ from that of a typical salon visit. It’s not uncommon for

training appointments to take a little longer, as the trainees work

methodically to ensure they’re learning and performing each step

correctly. Our trainers are there to offer guidance and feedback

throughout, but the process may involve a bit more patience from

you.

We will always aim to give you a beautiful result, but since our trainees are still learning, we can’t promise the exact same

outcome you'd expect from a fully qualified stylist. However, they’re guided through every new technique and work hard to

meet our high standards. Our stylists are perfectionists and have been coached on how to take an apprentice through a

service, but if you do feel any part of your cut or colour needs extra attention at the end of your appointment, feel free to

share your opinion so we can address it then and there. If necessary, we’ll book you back in with the same trainee. This

gives them a valuable chance to learn and make sure you leave feeling happy with your hair.

Contributing to a Future Stylist’s

Journey

Your decision to become a hair model is more than just a way

to refresh your look; it’s an opportunity to support our young,

aspiring stylists on their path to becoming fully qualified

professionals. Every haircut, every color, and every styling

session helps them gain the confidence and expertise they

need to succeed in their careers.

If you’re open to an exciting and educational experience—and are willing to

embrace the learning process—then a hair model appointment at Charlie Miller

may be the perfect opportunity for you!

Please note model appointments cannot be booked on our website and may require a consultation. All colour appointments require a Patch Test 19.

Fringe Benefits

Bangs are one of the most transformative yet timeless hair trends, offering a quick way to change

up your look without a full chop. From soft, face-framing wisps to bold, daring cuts, each type of

bang can complement your face shape, add dimension, and change the overall vibe of your style.

There’s a fringe for every face, regardless of shape or hair type.

Fringes will continue to be big news in the latter part of 2024, so let us share with you our four

favourite looks..

Curtain Bangs

Pros:

Curtain bangs are longer, parted bangs that sweep to the sides, softly framing the face. They are great for round,

square, and heart-shaped faces, balancing proportions and blending seamlessly into longer layers.

Cons:

They can fall into your face and lack structure, especially if your hair is curly or wavy. Greasiness or frizz may also

be an issue, requiring extra styling time.

Maintenance:

Trim every 6-8 weeks. Blow-dry or flat iron for a polished look, using volumizing spray for bounce. They grow out

gracefully, making them lower-maintenance over time.

Baby Bangs

Pros:

Baby bangs are shorter than their curtain bang sisters and sit higher on the forehead, perfect for oval or heart-shaped

faces. They highlight the eyes and cheekbones and add an edgy, fashion-forward element to your style.

Cons:

They may not suit everyone, especially those with longer faces. They’re a little more difficult to grow out but of course can

transition to a curtain bang easily. They may require daily straightening for those with curly hair, or a round brush every

morning for those with finer locks.

Maintenance:

Trim every 3-4 weeks to maintain the shape. Use either a straightener or a hot brush to keep them bouncy and a touch of

hairspray for extra hold.

Micro Bangs

Wispy Bangs

Pros:

Wispy bangs are thin, feathered, and gently frame the face, making them flattering for most face shapes,

especially round or square ones. They create a soft, romantic look without overpowering your hairstyle, making

them great for fine hair.

Cons:

These bangs can separate easily, especially with oily hair or humid conditions. They might not stand out on

thicker hair and can require frequent touch-ups to stay in place.

Maintenance:

Trim every 4-6 weeks to keep their lightweight appearance. A quick blow-dry or flat iron will maintain their soft

shape, and dry shampoo can help keep them from going limp.

Pros:

Micro bangs, cut well above the eyebrows, offer a daring, avant-garde look that suits oval, round, or heart-shaped

faces. They draw attention to the eyes and give a bold, high-fashion feel.

Cons:

They’re very bold and don’t suit everyone, especially those with longer faces. Growing them out can be tricky, and

they can be difficult to manage on curly or frizzy hair.

Maintenance:

These require trims every 2-3 weeks. Flat ironing and using styling cream are essential for keeping them sleek and

smooth.

Ready to go for it?

Here are a few handy tips you might want to consider

before you go for the chop...

1. Take a picture to show your

stylist!

Whether you're after Sabrina Carpenter's look, Taylor

Swift's straight, blunt fringe or the wispy bangs often

sported by Kim K or J Lo, it's great to have a visual aid

to make sure you're both on the same page.

2. Commit to regular cuts.

It's likely your bangs will need cut long before the rest

of your hair, which is why we offer our clients

complimentary fringe trims. Call the salon on the day

you'd like to come in to avoid disappointment, and

we'll do our best to see you.

4. Know that new bangs

almost always require

new haircare routines!

Whether it's a dry shampoo to combat the

oiliness that is the enemy of many fringes,

or learning a new roller or round brush

technique, a fringe is a commitment.

3. Keep an open mind.

If another style might suit you better, our stylists

will always be honest. If a particular fringe won't

suit your hair type, face shape or lifestyle, they'll

offer an alternative idea.

5. Please leave it to us to

cut in your bangs!

For every TikTok video you watch of an athome

fringe trim that looks good, five more

are micro-fringe disasters. Please let us give

you your new look.

Wash & Dry Your

Hair The Right Way

Not getting the most out of your wash and blow dry at home? You might be making

some very common mistakes when it comes to at-home styling...

After more than 55 years in the hairdressing business,

we’ve seen our fair share of hair faux pas. From home

bleaching gone wrong to ill-advised YouTube tutorial

fringe trims, we’ve fixed many a blunder.

Some errors are so subtle though, that it can be easy to

make them day by day, without realising why your hair is

feeling lacklustre.

Ever wondered why your hair feels greasy, despite

washing it daily? How it feels like straw even if you’ve just

conditioned it? We’re here to share some of our expert

tips that you can easily adopt into your haircare routine,

to encourage your tresses to be the very best they can be!

Today we talk you through the three most common

mistakes you could be making when it comes to your

wash and blow dry routine.

1. Not getting your hair wash routine

right.

One of the most common mistakes with your

wash and blow dry is that you haven’t quite

gotten the balance right yet.

Over washing can affect the integrity of your hair,

especially when using harsh shampoos or the wrong

shampoo for your hair type.

Too much washing can remove the sebum your

scalp produces, which is vital to shiny, healthy hair.

If you’re noticing your hair looking more frizzy than

glossy, you may well be overdoing it. A little oil isn’t

a bad thing; over cleansing contributes to hair

dullness, possibly creating coarse feeling, difficultto-style

hair.

Ideally, we should be washing our hair when it feels

unclean to the touch, and of course this often

depends on our hair type.

Fine hair often gets greasier quickly, while thick,

wavy or curly hair can afford to leave a little longer

between wash days. Hair can often be ‘trained’ with

a little patience, trial and error to forego the

shampoo a little longer. But what if we have a

particularly oily scalp, work out daily, or feel the

need to wash more often due to a certain style? Hair

that gets oily, sweaty, plied with styling products or

just won't sit right without a daily blow dry can be

cared for better with the right daily shampoo. Solve

bed-head problems with heatless styling;

experiment with sock curls and sleep in rollers.

Shampoo with the product that best suits your hair

type and hair needs. Your hairdresser can advise

you on the product that suits you and your routine,

as well as give their thoughts on when and how to

use it.

23.

Investing in premium haircare might be the best

thing you could possibly do for your beauty

routine. Using sulphates, drying alcohols and other

damaging ingredients might be the reason your hair isn’t

thriving. Look for high quality ingredients and tried and

tested products with a professional seal of approval.

A little goes a long way.

While it might seem pricier, you need only use a small

amount of product, and may well get away with an extra

day or two in your routine. For fine hair in need of a boost,

pump up the volume and give your hair body and bounce

with our salon-quality Volume Shampoo, and quench

thick, dry or curly hair with Hydrate Shampoo, which

works wonders on dry hair and scalps.

When detangling, comb or use a wet brush and gently

work from mid lengths to ends first. Only comb straight

through the hair once your hair is carefully untangled.

Our 10 in 1 Spray is full of Charlie Miller magic! This

leave in conditioner nourishes dry hair, protects your

hair and scalp from the sun and prevents split ends with

a formula that's paraben and sulphate-free.

The change in your hair's structure allows ingredients to

penetrate and nourish the hair from within, so this is

your optimum time to treat it with your preferred (and

recommended) product. We suggest Charlie Miller

Smoothing Blow Dry Crème to protect your hair

from heat of up to 230°C. Both paraben and sulphate

free, this heat protectant treatment keeps hair looking

smooth, soft and frizz-free after styling.

We’re all guilty of blasting our sopping wet hair

dry when we’re in a rush. Learning some skills

from the experts could save you time in the long

run.

Don’t tackle too much at once. Separate your hair into

sections, starting underneath and clipping the rest away.

Investing in a professional hairdryer with a nozzle can

make the world of difference and use a vent brush for

more control. Take a small section of hair in your brush,

point your nozzle downwards and slowly work it down

the section from root to tip.

2. Not taking care of your wet hair after your

wash might affect the final finish.

You’ve got that wash routine down, now it’s time to ensure

you’re detangling your tresses properly! Even if you've

remedied all other mistakes with your wash and blow dry,

being heavy-handed with your freshly-washed hair can

undo all of your hard work.

Gently blot and squeeze the excess moisture from your

hair. In salon, our trainees do this using a microfibre

towel, but an old t-shirt will work as a great substitute.

Our hair is at its most vulnerable when wet, so it makes

sense that we should be treating it as gently as possible at

this stage. However, it’s easier said than done when we’re

in a rush.

Despite being in its most delicate state, our wet hair is a

utopia for nourishing products while damp.

Even after using the best shampoo and conditioner for

your hair concerns, your locks may still need further

treatment.

Much like our skin which often needs more

than just a cleanser and moisturiser to look

its best, our hair often cries out for a little

extra TLC.

For the perfect finishing touch, apply an oil to your

lengths and ends. A small amount of our Gloss Oil will

give an extra boost of moisture, help repair any split ends

and encourage shine.

Don’t be afraid to ask for a demonstration on the best

technique for your hair the next time you’re in the salon.

Your hairdresser wants your chosen style to work for you

every day; they’re more than happy to share their tips

and tricks, to advise on products or tools to make every

day a great hair day!

The full range of Charlie Miller products are

available exclusively in our salons, as well as our

haircare website.

Established in 2004 and led by Lauren McGinty, Womankind has grown into one of

Stockbridge and Edinburgh's leading beauty destinations, renowned for offering the latest

in aesthetic treatments. As a family-run, multi-award-winning business with years of

experience in the beauty industry, the team are dedicated to delivering exceptional service

and innovative beauty solutions. In recent years we have enjoyed a beautiful partnership

with the team, as their expansion has led them to open a salon within our newest branch on

Raeburn Place.

Here, we talk with our friend and business partner Lauren as we delve into what inspired

her to seek out a career in beauty, what she loves most about her job and her excitement

about the future of beauty apprenticeships...

It was clear from the childhood that whatever

Lauren McGinty chose to do later in her career, it

was going to be something artistic. The beauty

industry intrigued her from a young age and at

school she enjoyed more creative subjects.

Her first foray into beauty was with Charlie Miller,

a relationship that a few years later, would come

full circle. She joined the company as a 15-yearold

Saturday girl in the Frederick Street branch. As

much as she enjoyed being part of the industry as

a whole, something didn’t quite click with hair. This

position did, however, confirm that beauty was

definitely for her, and it offered an insight into

Charlie Miller which would prove valuable. She

remembers the family-feel to the business, and the

standards and values Charlie himself instilled in

the team.

Lauren soon began developing a love for make-up

and enjoyed experimenting with different looks, but

she remained at school while she weighed up the

options for her future.

Upon leaving high school she found a job as

stationary girl at Scottish Executive, a job she

loved.

“I knew though, that I’d have to decide what I

wanted to do as a career, or I’d get too used to a

full-time wage and that would be that!” she tells

us.

From there, she applied to Mary Reid beauty school

when she was 17. Here, she studied for an HND for a

year, completing her international qualifications too

in case she decided to travel.

“To be honest I went in quite blind; I didn’t

know what to expect at all, but I knew I

loved it from my very first day."

26.

When Lauren first began her training, she favoured

the more holistic side, such as massage and

spent more time in the Spa Academy than

anywhere else; however, she grew out of that quite

quickly due to how physically demanding it is!

Lauren then fell in love with the beauty aspect, and

as she’s grown and developed in her career, has

become more and more passionate about skin

health.

“I guess I’ve never really stopped evolving,

and that’s what I love about this industry.”

Lauren explains that having a good skincare routine

is her best tip for keeping skin youthful that she

would recommend over everything else.

“I always liken it to going and getting the

best personal trainer in the world, having

one or two sessions with them and

expecting a big difference. Whereas if you

go to your local gym consistently, keep it up

and combine it with a good diet and you’ll

see results. If you don’t have the foundation

of a good regular skincare routine, yes,

you’ll get lovely results seeing a professional

for a one-off skin treatment, but you’re

never going to get to the end of your journey

if you don’t put the work in on your own

time.”

Womankind works with their partners Alumier MD, who

use medical grade skincare that can penetrate

deeper into the skin, actively working. “They’re

targeted for different skin concerns too, so we can

treat problematic skin, pigmentation, aging... all sorts

of stuff.”

So dedicated to helping skin be the best it can be,

Lauren has invested in technology that can measure

moisture levels, tell the age of wrinkles, how

dehydrated the skin is and examine pore sizes. It

generates lots of in-depth information that can tell you

what you need to work on or maintain. “It’s a great

indicator of what someone might be doing really well,

but also a great way to support people who just don’t

know where to start.” says Lauren.

Skin-related appointments are certainly what Lauren is

most in demand for, and she’s been incredibly busy

with facial aesthetics of late.

Lauren’s take on aesthetics such as filler and Botox is

that it should enhance what you naturally have, rather

than alter it completely. Integrity is imperative when it

comes to facial aesthetics, and Lauren strongly

believes that a client should ask as many questions as

they wish at the first consultation and throughout.

Similarly, she will always refuse to do anything that she

feels looks unnatural, and if she feels a client would

benefit from dissolving any filler and starting fresh, she

will absolutely suggest this.

27.

“The salon ethos is about enhancing the natural

beauty” she tells us.

These principles extend to every service Womankind

offers.

Whilst we offer nail or lash extensions, and the girls do

some stunning work in those areas, we would always

help and encourage clients to look after the health of

their own nails and their own lashes.” She reckons you

can’t beat a clean, fresh French Manicure!

Lauren’s love of helping people have the best skin they

can possibly have has never wavered, but she also

loves waxing.

“It sounds strange, but I absolutely love the

satisfaction of it, as well as the chat you get with

waxing!” She says. “It can be fun, it’s a pretty intimate

thing to do so you just have to go with it.”

The salon also offers services tailored directly to men,

and Lauren has certainly seen a rise in gents taking

more of an interest in grooming and looking their best.

All of their facial and body treatments are suitable for

any gender, and they offer a selection of treatments

designed specifically for men and the natural nail.

Whilst there will remain a taboo around men

undertaking beauty treatments, which extends to

hairdressing when it comes to colour too, it’s

wonderful to see more men embracing beauty

salons.

Lauren bought her first salon in Stockbridge in 2003

and worked long days renovated the salon while

pregnant. When she first opened, she worked with her

mum and since then, the salon has grown and grown.

Always keen to expand her skillset and allow the team

to evolve, Lauren began searching for another space

to allow her booming business to grow.

As fate would have it, she reignited her relationship

with Charlie Miller in 2019. After having gone to view

the new retail spaces on Raeburn place and deciding

the unit was a little too big for their needs, Lauren

was delighted to receive a call from Josh Miller,

proposing an exciting joint venture. The new Charlie

Miller salon at Stockbridge launched alongside

Womankind @ Charlie Miller on the 28th of October

2021; the beginning of a harmonious relationship.

Lauren has loved the partnership that has forged

between the brands and values Josh and Jason’s

business expertise. Josh and Jason in turn, recognised

immediately that Lauren held many of the same

values as we do here at Charlie Miller.

Together we have launched offers, competitions and

events as well as a package for weddings combining

bridal hair and make-up. Lauren’s vision for her brides

is that they should look and feel like the best version

of themselves on their big day, a take that aligns

entirely with Charlie Miller’s wedding hair team.

Together the teams work in harmony to create

stunning wedding looks. Lauren adores neutral tones

of soft pinks and subtle browns but is not averse to a

bold red lip or a classic cat eye if this is what makes

a bride feel like her best self.

28.

With a string of industry awards and accolades

under their belts, the salon continues to go from

strength to strength. Amongst others, the team have

been proud recipients of Beauty Salon of the Year

at the 2021 Scottish Hair and Beauty Awards

(SHABA). They are regulars at the SHABA awards,

and this year were finalists in the Beauty Salon of

the Year, Nail Salon of the Year and Best Social

Media influencer categories.

Lauren and the team were also proud recipients of

Best Bridal Party Make-Up Services Provider at the

LUXlife Wedding Awards for 2024 and

At the core of the salon's philosophy is a commitment

to providing excellent customer service, offering

clients some of the world's finest beauty products

and cutting-edge treatments, and we have no doubt

that this will be an incredible place to gain skills in

aesthetics and holistic treatments as well as makeup,

nail, lash and brow artistry.

We deeply value our partnership with Womankind

and can wholeheartedly say that their exceptional

customer service and commitment to the craft aligns

with our values perfectly. We are excited for what

the future holds for the team!

Lauren loves watching her team learn and grow and

is also passionate about sharing her knowledge.

She’s delighted to see that there is an increase in

beauty apprenticeships happening in the industry;

this has been the norm for hairdressing for decades,

but training in beauty has generally been restricted

to schools and colleges. Lauren is excited that

aspiring beauticians across the UK will have the

opportunity to learn and gain hands on experience in

a salon environment. Lauren herself has striven to

gain qualifications in teaching, and this is absolutely

the kind of opportunity she hopes Womankind will be

able to offer in the future

Harmonize Your Hair and Nails for the Season

with Charlie Miller and Womankind Beauty.

Charlie Miller Stockbridge has the wonderful

benefit of sharing a space with our friends at

Womankind Beauty salon. Why not take

advantage of this perfect pairing by combining

your hair appointment with your nail

appointment? Womankind’s owner Lauren

McGinty loves the tones autumn brings, and

her absolute favourite nail look this fall is a

stunning, rich chocolate brown chrome.

We’ve chosen our favourite Autumn hair

colours and found their perfectly matching gel

polishes, for a little co-ordination inspiration...

After Dark

Honey Blonde

Plum

Honey blonde remains an ever-popular choice for autumn 2024, offering a

warm, sun-kissed look that’s perfect for transitioning into the cooler months.

This golden tone is ideal for toning down bright summer blondes, adding

depth and richness that aligns with the softer, muted shades of autumn and

winter. Paired with Elixir Cat Eye from The Gel Bottle, a captivating gel polish

that creates a reflective, dimensional cat-eye effect, this combination strikes

the perfect balance between natural warmth and bold elegance. The

shimmering, dynamic finish of the polish enhances the understated glow of

honey blonde, creating a chic, autumn-ready style with a touch of seasonal

magic.

Plum is one of the standout colors of autumn 2024, capturing the richness

and warmth of the season. This deep, luxurious hue blends perfectly with

the earthy tones of fall, offering a striking yet versatile option for those

looking to embrace autumn’s palette. Plum works well in everything from

cosy knits to accessories, but it truly shines as a hair or nail colour. Whether

it’s a glossy, bold plum manicure or a rich, deep purple hair shade,

incorporating this colour into your beauty routine brings a sense of

sophistication and autumnal flair, making it a perfect choice for the cooler

months.

Elixir Cat-Eye

Crimson

Bold crimson hair is making a vibrant statement for autumn 2024, perfect for

those who want to embrace a striking, head-turning look. This rich, fiery red

adds warmth and intensity to the cooler months, offering a bold alternative to

the more muted autumn tones. For a beautifully coordinated style, pair it with

Rosetta from The Gel Bottle, a classic deep red gel polish that radiates

timeless elegance. The combination of bright crimson hair and Rosetta nails

creates a powerful, confident look, with the polish’s deep red perfectly

complementing the vivid vibrance of the hair, making for a stunning and

seasonally-appropriate ensemble that will transiltion beautifully over into

Christmas.

Rosetta

Bright Copper

Amber

Bright copper hair continues to rise in popularity, and there’s no better time

to embrace this vibrant shade than autumn 2024. Its fiery orange tones

beautifully reflect the changing season, making it a perfect choice for those

wanting a bold yet seasonally appropriate look. Pair it with Amber from The

Gel Bottle, a rich, glowing gel polish that captures the golden warmth of fall.

Together, bright copper hair and Amber nails create a stunning, harmonious

style, with the polish’s earthy amber tones enhancing the radiant, autumnal

glow of the copper hair for a striking look.

Chocolate

Chocolate brown is a rich and indulgent shade that embodies warmth and

sophistication. This deep, luscious brown is perfect for adding a touch of

elegance during the cooler months, making it an ideal choice for anyone

looking to embrace the season’s cosy vibes. Complement this stunning

hair colour with Chocolate from The Gel Bottle, a luxurious gel polish that

features warm, cocoa tones. The pairing of chocolate hair and cocoa nails

creates a delightful synergy, where the deep hues beautifully enhance

each other, resulting in a polished and chic look that’s perfect for autumn.

Chocolate

Bronze Chrome

Pigment

Bronde

Bronde hair is poised to be a key trend well into 2025, seamlessly blending

warm blonde and rich brunette tones to create a sun-kissed, multidimensional

look. This versatile shade is perfect for those who want a soft yet striking

change as the weather cools, making it an ideal choice for the season.

Enhance this gorgeous hair colour with a bronze chrome pigment for nails,

which adds a reflective, metallic finish that beautifully captures the warm tones

of fall. The combination of Bronde hair and bronze chrome nails creates a

stunning interplay of light and depth, resulting in a chic, contemporary style

that embodies the spirit of autumn.

Auburn

Auburn hair is a gorgeous choice for autumn, showcasing a rich blend

of deep reds and browns that perfectly reflect the season's warm

palette. This captivating shade offers a sophisticated look, ideal for

embracing the vibes of fall. To complement this beautiful hair colour,

consider Vintage by The Gel Bottle, a muted, warm-toned polish that

the polish enhancing the rich tones of the hair for a chic autumn look.

Burgundy hair features a striking blend of deep reds and purples that

ensemble that embodies confidence and creativity, ensuring you stand

out beautifully this autumn.

Ketchup

Periwinkle Blue

Destiny

Dare to be different from the reds, coppers and honey shades? Hair doesn’t

always have to follow the trends. A periwinkle blue peekaboo might be an

unexpected choice for autumn 2024, breaking away from traditional seasonal

hues but this soft, cool blue adds a whimsical touch to your hairstyle. To enhance

this playful and creative look, consider pairing it with a nail colour like Gel Bottle’s

Destiny; a stunning, stand-out shade whatever the weather.

Platinum Blonde

For our die-hard blondes, platinum blonde offers a bright, luminous hue that

effortlessly transitions into winter. This shade is a perfect option for those

looking to lighten up their look as the seasons change. Pair it with Mont

Blanc by The Gel Bottle, a soft, sheer milky white glitter gel polish. A single

coat provides a subtle shimmer, while two coats create a beautiful

snowflake-esque sparkle, perfectly complementing the icy allure of platinum

blonde hair. Together, this combination exudes a fresh and chic style,

embodying the elegance of both autumn and the approaching winter.

A Legacy of Hairdressing

Excellence

At Charlie Miller, we’ve spent nearly six decades

perfecting our craft, but it all began with one man’s

passion. In 1965, Charlie Miller OBE started cutting

hair in a small Edinburgh salon, driven by a love for

creativity and a desire to make people look and feel

their best. From those early days, Charlie’s commitment

to quality and service helped build something truly

special—and that dedication still inspires everything we

do today.

Now, with four busy salons across Edinburgh, a Hair

Academy, our own haircare range, and a team of over

100, we’re proud of the journey we’ve taken. We may

have grown, but at our core, we’re still a family

business, rooted in the values Charlie passed on to his

sons, Jason and Josh—genuineness, empathy, and

warmth.

While we’re always striving to provide

the best experience for our clients, we’re

also incredibly honored by the

recognition we’ve received over the

years.

A Creative Force in

Hairdressing

Charlie himself has won numerous prestigious awards,

including three-time ‘Scottish Hairdresser of the Year,’

and he’s a founding member of the British Hairdressing

Hall of Fame. He’s also been named ‘Avant-garde

Hairdresser of the Year,’ the National Hairdressers

Federation’s ‘Hairdresser of the Year,’ and even ‘World

Master of the Craft’ in New York. Charlie’s influence has

been so great that he was listed among The Scotsman’s

top 500 most influential people in Edinburgh.

We’re proud that this legacy of creativity and excellence

continues through our team. Jason and his wife, India,

have followed in Charlie’s footsteps, both being inducted

into the British Hairdressing Hall of Fame and winning

awards like ‘Newcomer of the Year.’ Our team has earned

more than 14 British Hairdressing Awards and titles from

the Association of International Professional Press (AIPP)

for Best Avant-Garde Fashion Collection. We’ve also

regularly been finalists at the prestigious L’Oréal Colour

Trophy, recently winning the L’Oréal Rising Star Award.

While we’ve had the chance to work with some amazing

clients, from Karen Gillan and Charlize Theron to global

acts like David Guetta and the Backstreet Boys, we believe

every client deserves the same care and attention.

No matter who’s in our chair, our goal is

always to create beautiful hair that makes

them feel their best.

Why Work with Us?

We believe hairdressing is one of the most rewarding

careers there is. There’s nothing quite like making

someone feel confident and beautiful with a fresh new

look. When you join us at Charlie Miller, you’re not just

learning the skills of cutting and styling hair—you’re

becoming part of something bigger, where creativity and

personal growth go hand-in-hand.

Our apprenticeship program provides top-level training

from some of the industry’s finest, with qualifications

like SVQ Levels 2 and 3 in Hairdressing. We also focus

on developing you beyond the technical skills, helping

you grow in areas like communication, client care, and

teamwork. You’ll be learning in a supportive

environment, with access to world-class training and

opportunities to be involved in projects with

organizations like The Edinburgh Film Festival and

charities such as The Little Princess Trust.

Whether you want to refine your cutting and colouring

techniques or explore other areas of hairdressing, we’ll

be with you every step of the way.

At Charlie Miller, we’re about more than just hair.

We’re about creating a space where people feel cared

for, understood, and inspired. We may have won

awards and worked with high-profile clients, but at the

end of the day, what matters most is the experience we

give to everyone who walks through our doors.

Hairdressing isn’t just a job—it’s a way to connect with

people and make a difference in their lives. If that’s the

kind of environment you’re looking for, we’d love for

you to join us.

We also strive to make sure our team feels valued. From

complimentary haircuts to discounted services and access

to a wellbeing support team, we care about creating a

positive workplace. Our neurodivergence policy reflects

our commitment to inclusivity, and we’re proud to

celebrate achievements at our annual awards ceremony

and official graduation events.

A Future of Growth

Once you’re fully qualified, the opportunities don’t stop.

We offer a competitive salary and commission structure,

along with access to an ongoing development program

that helps you continue to grow in your career.

We’re incredibly proud of what we’ve built over the

years—from awards and accolades to the amazing

team we’ve developed—but none of it would be

possible without the wonderful clients and colleagues

who trust us every day. We’re a family at heart, and

we’re always excited to welcome new people on the

Charlie Miller journey.

We are also able to consider applications for Salon Co-

Ordinators; our receptionists are the first point of

contact for clients, either on the phone or in person.

They play a crucial role in ensuring a positive and

memorable experience in our salons and are tasked

with upholding our values in every interaction.

Quiet

Luxury

A Look Ahead: Winter Hair Trends and

the Quiet Luxury Aesthetic

35.

As we transition into the colder months, it's time to

reflect on what winter holds for hair trends. We asked

some of our stylists what colours, styles and general

vibes were here to stay for winter and beyond, and the

resounding answer were phrases such as 'quiet luxury'

and 'old money hair'.

Quiet Luxury: The Winter

Colour Palette

South St Andrew Street's Salon Director Roz

predicts this winter will be all about ‘quiet

luxury,’ and while rich auburns, velvety browns

and beautiful brondes will be prominent, soft

golden blonde is very much what she’s being

asked for at the moment. “Think expensive

Bond Street blondes that makes you question

whether it’s the client’s real colour or not!”

These colours are effortless, not overdone.

She also highlights the amount of searches

for “Old Money Hair” in general, which

incorporates styling with soft, polished

waves, low buns or big bouncy blow-dries,

and cuts with curtain bangs and lots of

layers.

Quiet luxury isn’t just for

those with long locks

either- French bobs and

flicky, voluminous lobs

are still very much in

demand.

These thoughts are echoed by South St

Andrew Street's Molly. Molly is one of our

Senior Salon Stylists and a Salon Technician,

who has noticed that “Old Money Blonde” is a

popular search on TikTok this season... Think

Sofia Richie Grainge's soft multi-dimensional

blonde or the lit-from-within caramel

highlights of Blake Lively.

Asides from the length, it’s about finding a

classic shade that compliments your

complexion as well as your wardrobe.

Whatever the tone though, it looks expensive,

along with a glossy finish, born from fabulous

haircare.

We’ve certainly seen the return of clients

investing in luxury haircare again over the

last few months, and one key factor in

maintaining opulent shades is to choose

products that will genuinely contribute to its

health, particularly giving it nourishment, lift

and shine.

36.

Hydration is a must for luxe hair. Our Hydrate

Shampoo and Conditioner duo work magic on

dry hair and scalps, making hair happier,

healthier and thoroughly hydrated. Finish sleek

styles and gorgeous waves, or repair dry and

damaged hair with our luxurious hair oil. Our oil

won't leave your hair greasy! Just use one or

two drops to make hair extra-healthy, sleek

and shiny.

Big hair is back.

You don’t have to frequent

the Upper East Side of

Manhattan or have a Bond

Street adjacent post code

to look a million dollars.

The beauty of ‘quiet luxury’ is that it embraces

minimalism when it comes to colouring.

Taking care of your hair at home can keep your

colour for longer. Enhancing your natural colour

might mean you can stretch out the time

between highlight appointments (perhaps

going from a full head of highlights to a half

head) or focussing on tinting and toning rather

than going in with a lightener at each

appointment. An honourable mention should

be given however, to how far hair lightening

has come; with the advent of professional use

products such as L'Oréal's 9 Levels Lightening

Powder and epres Professional Bond Repair, our

colourists can lift your colour more safely than

ever.

Whilst the popularity of slicked back, sleek

hair will be prominent for some time, (the

‘Clean Girl’ aesthetic and ease of scraping

back the hair into a smooth bun or pony is

not to be sniffed at) our salons have seen a

resurgence of clients asking for lift at the

root.

Something that can truly elevate your look is

a quality blow dry; nothing says “luxury” like

hair with body and bounce, which can be

achieved with a round brush or a wide

straightener.

We’ve seen an influx in ingenious ways to

create a wave or curl since the days of

lockdown; whether it’s with heatless curls or

tong techniques.

37.

Swap this out for Volume Spritz if you'd like an

extra shot of shine with your root lift; our blow

dry spray boosts hair volume and adds extra

shine, making hair look fuller and healthier.

Thick headbands and bows are very on-brand

when it comes to the quiet luxury, or old money

aesthetic. Black velvet, lace or cream satin will

add to the vibe perfectly.

A little extra help...

From the humble roller to hot brushes,

there are ways and means of getting

that ‘blow out’ look with a little less arm

pain from wielding your hairdryer!

Your stylist wants you to be able to

recreate the look they give you at home;

ask as many questions as you need,

soak up as much knowledge as you

can.

Stafford Street's Senior Stylist Cameron

loves creating big, voluminous blow

dries and is often our staff's go-to to

create glamorous looks that last the

night. If you're recreating the 'blowout'

look at home, Cameron recommends

bending the ends of your hair in

sections with a straightener, then

adding a roller to keep your look bouncy

for longer.

Since we’ve launched our extension service,

we’ve found that most of the requests have been

less about finding length and more for thickness.

Whether with bonds or tapes, the added strands

create a fuller head of hair encouraging bounce

and movement, often adding to a client’s

confidence. A luscious mane can work wonders

for one’s self esteem! With thicker, more

voluminous hair, you can also experiment with

various looks and styles. If this sounds like

something you’d like to discuss further, call to

book a complimentary, no obligation

consultation with one of our extension specialists

in any of our city centre salons.

If you need to enhance the body and

bounce, our Volume Shampoo and

Conditioner can give you that, without

foregoing the moisture hit- no overly

squeaky-clean hair here! Follow by

applying our Volume Mousse before

your blow dry; not only is it a

conditioning mousse but a heat

protectant which will give your hair so

much body.

Colour consultations work just the same, and our

Blow Dry prices begin at £38. Don’t be afraid to

ask for any hints and tips from your stylist; we

want you to be able to recreate your favoured

style at home too.

Our journey with

STEKASkills

40.

STEKAskills is a dedicated Scottish charity that

has partnered with the wonderful Malawian

organization STEKA (Step Kids Awareness) to

fulfil their inspiring vision of creating a Centre

for Vocational Skills & Community Enterprise in

Malawi.

Together, they are on a mission to empower

marginalized young Malawians, who were

previously trafficked, abandoned or orphaned,

helping them find their voices and build

sustainable futures. The goal is to reduce their

dependency on donors, and guide them toward

high-quality employment opportunities.

Vocational skills training is so important in a

country where poverty means that only 1% of the

population can go to college.

For the past several years leading up to

Christmas, we have been selling their unique

and exquisite handmade tree decorations in

our salons, all of which have been made by the

team at STEKA.

The money raised has not only helped build and

entirely kit out a vibrant hairdressing school,

within STEKA’s vocational teaching block and pay

for a teacher, but has also brought joy and

opportunity to the young people at the STEKA

care home, who couldn’t be more thankful for the

difference it has made in their lives.

STEKA was first introduced to us by Cat

Nicholson, whilst she was manager of our Ocean

Terminal branch. STEKA’s Chairperson Emma

Wood was a client of Cat’s.

Together they arranged for the beautiful trees that

display the decorations to come in to each of the

salons and for our staff to be taught the origins of

the decorations. We then set to work raising as

much money as we could. This was the beginning

of a beautiful relationship, one that Cat was

always at the forefront of. We welcomed some of

the residents of STEKA school into the salon and

heard first-hand the impact the money we raised

had made.

Then, devastatingly, in March 2023 after a hardfought

battle, we lost Cat. So instrumental was she

in bringing STEKAskills and Charlie Miller together

that the very easy decision was made to name

the newly built school ‘The Cat Nicholson

Hairdressing School’.

While the decorations had previously been

shaped into angels, reindeers and other traditional

Christmas shapes, last year they were cats.

We have, of course, continued our relationship

with STEKA, not just in Cat’s honour but because it

is a truly wonderful charity.

This year our salons will once again be selling the

decorations, fashioned this time into bees,

butterflies and reindeers, as well as beautiful

double-sided aprons made from traditional

chitenge material.

STEKA’s mission now is to raise money to pay for

food so the students can afford to leave home

during the day and still eat, and kits for their

graduates to be able to set up their own

businesses. Cat’s mum May has picked up the

torch too, distributing the stock to be sold in the

salons on behalf of Emma. May will also host the

STEKA stall at our upcoming event ‘The Big

Christmas Do’ on the evening of Wednesday 20th

November.

41.

42.

Here, guests will be able to purchase STEKA items

before they go live in salons, alongside a whole

host of other Christmas treats and gifts.

In the summer of 2024 Holy Corner’s Manager

Amber Swift, one of Cat’s dearest friends,

appealed to our partners at L'Oréal for any

second-hand hairdressing tools they might be

able to donate to the school.

L'Oréal went one better though, and had 20

beautiful sets of scissors made to be gifted to

the budding hairdressers in Malawi.

The money raised for STEKA has of

course come from our wonderful

clients. None of this would have been

possible without your generosity. So

from Charlie Miller and STEKA, THANK

YOU.

The scissors are made by Kyoto, a highquality

brand that our hairdressers use here

too.

They have all come with the distinctive STEKA

logo engraved on them, and their own pouch.

Poignantly, Cat’s son Louie and her husband

Bruce received this beautiful delivery into our

Holy Corner salon alongside Amber and our

Managing Directors Jason and Josh, where

they readied them to be passed on to Emma to

take to Malawi. Louie proudly packed them into

a suitcase himself.

We cant wait for our friends in Malawi to

receive these scissors and to see some of the

work they produce with them.

To learn more about STEKA head

over to their website

STEKAskills.com. Here you will find

an option to donate directly to

them.

Can’t make it into salons? STEKA

also have an Etsy shop.

You can purchase a ticket for The

Big Christmas Do on the Charlie

Miller website.

STEKA’s items will be available to

purchase in all of our salons from

the end of November.

What’s in your

bag?

We

asked Stockbridge Salon Co-Ordinator

Hannah to bare us the contents of her

handbag.

What’s in your bag?

Our Stockbridge clients will no doubt

recognise our wonderful Hannah as being the

friendly, smiley face of the front desk in our

Raeburn Place salon. Hannah began working

on the desk in 2017 in Ocean Terminal, and

has since become an invaluable asset to not

only her salon, but the company as a whole.

Hannah regularly trains our new receptionists

and is a shining example of outstanding

customer service. Hannah’s bag is neat and

tidy with just a few essentials!

Hannah drives to work in her cream Mini

Cooper. Her ‘London’ keyring is from a trip

there one New Year.

A couple of mint humbugs are on hand incase a little

sugar rush is needed!

Salon life means our hair has to

represent the brand at all times; this

handy folding brush is perfect to pop

in the handbag.

Hannah’s signature lip look is Mac’s Velvet Teddy

Silky Matte Lipstick, topped with Charlotte Tilbury’s

Pillow Talk Lip Lustre.
