As I sit down to write this letter, it is with a mix of
emotions that I reflect on the incredible journey of CosBeauty
Magazine. This final issue marks the closing of a chapter
that began in 1998, when we first launched as Cosmetic Surgery &
evolving world of cosmetic procedures has, over the years, transformed
into CosBeauty Magazine, expanding our vision to encompass the everchanging
landscape of beauty and aesthetic medicine.
Since our rebrand in 2017, CosBeauty has been a trusted source of
in non-surgical treatments to the most innovative skincare products, we’ve
prided ourselves on delivering reliable, up-to-date content, curated with
your needs in mind.
gratitude – for the support of our loyal readers, the expertise of our
this magazine. It has been an honour to guide you through your beauty
journeys, to explore new technologies and to celebrate self-expression in
ELLA BACHÉ CELEBRATES 70
YEARS OF INNOVATION IN
AUSTRALIAN SKINCARE
For over 70 years, Ella Baché has
evolved alongside the changing
face of Australia. In an everdiversifying
nation, the demands of
every unique skin become equally as
varied, requiring targeted solutions.
Treating thousands of different skin
conditions every year, Ella Baché’s
suite of products and stable of
over 100 salons cater directly to the
needs of Australians throughout the
country – from the cooler climates
of southern states, the dryer central
and western regions and the
elevated harshness of the sun in
the north.
Ella Baché has become a uniquely
Australian story thanks to the
inspiration of Edith Hallas, the
French beauty therapist (and wife
of founder Madame Baché’s cousin)
who, after fleeing Europe during
WWII and arriving in Australia, saw
the need for new skincare products
and treatments to suit the harsher
Australian climates. She introduced
Ella Baché’s groundbreaking
formulas to the local market,
eventually opening the Ella Baché
beauty counter at David Jones
Sydney in 1954 – the first beauty
counter of its kind in Australia.
Seventy years later, Ella Baché
has become one of Australia’s
most respected and enduring
skincare brands. Their Special Eye
Cream from the Classics range
alone has achieved an impressive
milestone, with over 10 million jars
sold to Australians.
Ella Baché is also one of the
country’s largest skincare franchise
networks, with products and
services available in over 100 salons
nationwide, and over 60 years of
experience in training and education
offered by the nationally-recognised
Ella Baché Beauty College.
Today, Ella Baché continues to
lead the way in skincare, upholding
their rich history of innovation and
education with comprehensive
skincare lines and in-salon
treatments catering to a myriad of
skin types and concerns.
‘Seventy years is a wonderful
milestone for Ella Baché. We have
never deviated from Madame
Baché’s mantra that no two skins
are alike. We remain focused on
developing innovative products that
provide treatments and solutions
tailored to the evolving skin
needs of Australians while always
honouring our wonderful heritage
and values,’ says Pippa Hallas, Ella
Baché CEO. CBM
There’s a trick to the
‘graceful exit’. It begins
with the vision to
is over – and let it go. It
means leaving what’s over
Season 4
ACHIEVING THE ‘FRENCH GIRL CHIC’ LOOK
IS A FAIT ACCOMPLI WITH A FEW SIMPLE
MAKEUP STAPLES.
if you've been watching Emily in Paris,
you'll know that every season brings more
than just new twists in Emily's love life –
it’s a masterclass in French fashion and
beauty. Season 4 promises to deliver even
more of the sartorial splendour we've come to
expect, bringing with it a blend of modern trends
and classic French sophistication. While we may
not be in strolling the Champs-Élysées, we can
still rock the ‘French girl chic’ look with a few
classic makeup staples.
When it comes to makeup, French women – and
Emily – subscribe to a simple philosophy: less is
more. A fresh, glowing complexion is the hallmark
of French beauty. Achieving that barely-there
makeup look starts with healthy skin. In France,
skincare is everything, and makeup is seen as a
way to enhance, not mask, your natural beauty.
Begin with a light foundation or tinted
moisturiser. If you have areas that need extra
coverage, use a lightweight concealer sparingly.
The goal is for your skin to look like skin – natural,
radiant and never cakey. A touch of highlighter on
the cheekbones, nose and cupid’s bow completes
the canvas prep.
Bold red
If there's one beauty look that says
‘French chic,’ it’s the bold red lip. French
women have mastered the art of wearing
red lipstick in a way that feels effortless
yet powerful. The trick is to keep the rest
of your makeup minimal when wearing a
bold lip, letting the colour stand out as
the focal point.
Find the right shade of red for your skin
tone. Blue-toned reds work well for fair
skin, while deeper reds with orange or
brown undertones complement darker
complexions. Opt for a matte or satin
finish to keep things sophisticated and
long-lasting.
Natural
The French girl look is all about that fresh, rosy glow, like you’ve just
stepped in from a crisp walk along the Seine. Choose a peachy-pink
blush and apply it to the apples of your cheeks, blending upwards
towards your temples for a soft flush of colour.
Cream blushes are great for this because they melt into the skin and
give a more dewy, natural finish. A little goes a long way, so start with
a small amount and build up if needed. Remember, the goal is to look
effortlessly radiant, not overly flushed.
The bob, a nod to the clssic 90s
supermodel aesthetic, is making a major
comeback, and Emily’s Lily Collins is
proving that this sharp, chic style can
add an edgy sophistication to any look.
We chat with Nik Goutziotis, the highly
esteemed and internationally trained
Revlon Professional stylist and founder of
LILY COLLINS’ BOB
IN EMILY IN PARIS IS
EVERYWHERE RIGHT
NOW. WHAT ARE THE
HALLMARKS OF THIS
CUT?
Lily Collins' bob is trending for its precision
the chin with no layers, showcasing sharp,
clean lines that make a bold statement.
It’s a strong and sophisticated look with
THE BOB SQUAD. WHY
DO YOU THINK THIS
STYLE IS SO POPULAR
AGAIN?
The '90s bob is back, blending nostalgia
with a modern edge. Remember Rachel
Green’s hair? It was loved for its luscious
yet effortlessly chic vibe. Transitioning into
the '90s, we saw hair become smoother
and straighter, as ladies sought quick,
effortless styling. The straight bob offered
exactly this, and it's become popular
again today. This versatile cut suits nearly
everyone – whether you have straight,
wavy or curly hair. It can be sleek and
polished for a refined look or tousled and
textured for an everyday style. Plus, it's
relatively low maintenance, allowing you
to look chic with minimum effort.
BUT... WILL THE '90S BOB
SUIT ME?
We’re definitely entering a bob era, and
the beauty is it works with most face
shapes. The only thing that needs to be
considered is length, texture and if any
soft layering is required, depending on
your face shape.
A classic blunt bob enhances
cheekbones and softens jawlines for
heart-shaped faces, while oval faces can
pull off any bob length. For square faces,
a choppy or layered bob softens strong
jawlines, and a longer bob for round faces
creates an elongating effect. The key is
finding the variation that complements
your unique features.
BEAUTY
HOW DO YOU STYLE
A LASER-CUT BOB TO
ACHIEVE THAT SHARP,
POLISHED LOOK?
The laser-cut bob is ideal for anyone who
loves a polished look without hours of
styling. For a sleek finish, start with damp
hair and apply a heat protectant like the
Revlon Professional Restart Recovery
Sealing Drops. Begin by blast-drying your
hair upside down to remove excess water
and add body to your roots, then continue
to blow-dry with a paddle brush.
Next, use a flat iron on small sections
for an ultra-smooth finish; working in finer
sections will enhance the sharpness and
edge of the bob. To add shine, spritz
Revlon Professional Uniq One All-in-One
Hair Treatment.
To mix it up, create soft waves by curling
the mid-lengths and leaving the ends out,
or try a side part with gentle curls for a
voluminous French bob style.
To maintain your new look, hydration
is key – invest in high-quality hair masks
like the Revlon Professional Restart
Recovery Mask.
For this look, having the right length for
your hair texture is essential, so consult
your hairdresser who will be able to
advise on what suits you best based on
movement and thickness.
SUMMER
BEAUTY
MAKEUP
TRENDS:
flushed & fresh
AS THE WEATHER HEATS UP, SO DO
THE BEAUTY TRENDS. THIS SUMMER,
PEARLESCENT SKIN, FLUSHED CHEEKS
AND BALMY LIPS ARE ON THE HORIZON.
Lara Srokowski
Beauty Director,
Lancôme Australia
Summer is all about
fresh, glowing beauty.
To give us the lowdown
on the hottest makeup
looks for the season, we
spoke with Lara Srokowski,
Beauty Director for Lancôme
Australia. Here, she shares
her expert tips and product
recommendations for
achieving this summer’s
must-have makeup looks.
WHAT MAKEUP LOOK WILL
BE TRENDING THIS SUMMER?
This summer, it’s all about creating pearlinspired
skin with a radiant all-over glow paired
with runway flushed cheeks and blurred balmy
lips. To achieve this pearlescent finish, I love
mixing a small amount of Lancôme’s Genifique
Ultimate Serum into foundation. Finish the
look by adding highlighter on the high points of
your face with the new Teint Idole Ultra Wear
Transforming Highlighter.
Beautiful makeup always starts with
the beauty of the skin. A healthy, glowing
complexion is the key to a beautiful makeup
look. Skin preparation is essential to a luminous
complexion, focusing on layering hydrating
concentrated serums like Lancôme Advanced
Genifique and Renergie Triple serums to
achieve the perfect base for makeup.
www.cosbeauty.com.au 41
BEAUTY
WHICH FACIAL FEATURES
WILL TAKE CENTRE STAGE
THIS SEASON?
Definitely cheeks and lips! The focus will be on
glowing skin with flushed cheeks, while lips will
have a blurred, balmy finish.
Blush will be a staple in your beauty bag to add
that perfect flush of colour to the cheeks. Liquid
blush will be a huge trend. This texture keeps
the skin dewy and fresh. A great product to try is
the Lancôme Idole Cheek and Eye Tint, which
creates that healthy, flushed look.
Balmy (think soft and hydrated) ombre lips are
making a comeback. Lancome’s newly launched
Lip Idole Butter Glow is a beautiful balmy lipstick
supercharged with 12% squalane, providing
instant shine, buildable colour, and up to 24 hours
of hydration.
The eyes will be kept simple with pared-back
mascara. Brown mascara is having a moment – it’s
softer and perfect for a natural look that lets the
cheeks and lips take centre stage.
Expрt tips
TO GET THE LOOK
Want to perfect this summer’s
glowing, fresh-faced makeup look?
Here are Lara Srokowski’s top tips.
1.
Prep the skin: Always start with a
concentrated serum like Lancome’s Genifique
Ultimate for a healthy, glowing base before
applying any makeup.
2.
Mix it up: To give your foundation a more natural,
luminous finish, mix in a small amount of serum.
3.
Keep it soft: Swap out black mascara
for a brown shade to create a softer, more
minimalistic focus on the eyes.
4.
Add a bronzed glow: For a sun-kissed
look, use Lancôme Ultra Wear Transforming
Bronzer to contour your face, and add some Ultra
Wear Transforming Highlighter to the high points
for that lit-from-within glow.
5.
Monochromatic magic: Use your favorite shade
of lip tint or lipstick on your cheeks, eyes and lips
to create a seamless, monochromatic look. This
technique is great for achieving a minimalistic,
cohesive look that feels fresh and summery.

MICHAEL
EDWARDS’
WORLD
of Fragrance
FOR OVER 40 YEARS,
MICHAEL EDWARDS
HAS BEEN THE DRIVING
FORCE BEHIND PERFUME
CLASSIFICATION,
REVOLUTIONISING HOW
WE UNDERSTAND AND
APPRECIATE FRAGRANCES.
WE EXPLORE THE LIFE OF
THIS INDUSTRY PIONEER
AND HIS LASTING
INFLUENCE ON THE
WORLD OF PERFUME.
44 www.cosbeauty.com.au
Few figures in the world of fragrance have
had as profound an impact as Michael
Edwards. He has spent over four
decades reshaping the way we understand,
classify and appreciate the art of perfume,
and is renowned the world over as the expert
on fragrance.
Edwards’ influence on the fragrance
industry is unparalleled, and his legacy as
both a fragrance historian and taxonomist is
profound. Since founding Fragrances of the
World in 1983, he has dedicated his life to
making the often complex and elusive world
of perfume more accessible to both industry
professionals and consumers alike. Through
his pioneering work, he has helped bridge
the gap between consumers, perfumers and
retailers, creating a universal language of
scent that has stood the test of time.
With a career spanning more than 40 years,
Edwards has classified and matched over
40,000 fragrances. His influence extends
far beyond the realm of classification. As a
trusted adviser to every major fragrance house
in the world, his knowledge and counsel have
become invaluable to the industry.
www.cosbeauty.com.au 45
FROM PASSION TO
PROFESSION
FEATURE
Perfume has been Michael Edwards’ passion for
as long as he can remember. His journey into
the world of fragrance began with a curiosity
about the science behind scents. Briefly
studying biochemistry at university, he gained an
understanding of the technical processes involved
in creating fragrances. This knowledge would
prove invaluable in his future work, allowing him
to bridge the gap between science and the art of
perfume creation.
In 1984, just a year after launching Fragrances of
the World, Edwards published his first Fragrance
Manual, which remains an essential resource
for the perfume industry. Over the years, he has
continued to update this comprehensive guide
annually, mapping out the fragrance landscape
and making it easier for people to navigate the
complexities of scent.
According to Puig, the Spanish company behind
iconic brands like Paco Rabanne and Jean Paul
Gaultier, ‘Michael has created a common language
for fragrances’. His classification system has
become the industry standard, allowing perfumers,
retailers and consumers to speak the same
language when discussing scent.
The creation of the fragrance wheel, one
of Edwards’ most important contributions to
the world of perfume, came in 1992 with the
introduction of the Fragrance Wheel. This visual
representation of fragrance families, which
categorised scents into Floral, Ambry, Woody
and Fresh groups, was a game-changer. For the
first time, both beginners and experts could see
how different perfumes were related and how
scent families overlapped and complemented
each other.
The Fragrance Wheel simplified the perfumebuying
experience and has since become an
industry standard, used by retailers, perfumers and
consumers alike. It made navigating the complex
world of scent easier and more accessible for
everyone, transforming the way perfumes are
marketed and understood.
THE PERFUME HISTORIAN
FEATURE
Beyond classification, Edwards has also delved
deeply into the history of fragrance, chronicling
the evolution of scent and the stories behind
some of the most iconic perfumes in the world.
In 1996, he published Perfume Legends: French
Feminine Fragrances, a groundbreaking book
that traces the development of French perfumes
and explores the inspirations behind some of the
most celebrated scents in history.
For the first time, perfumers spoke openly
with Edwards about their work, revealing their
creative processes and sharing intimate details
about the inspirations behind their fragrances.
The book was the result of six years of intensive
research and over 150 interviews with perfumers,
making it a monumental achievement in
fragrance scholarship.
Renowned perfume critic Luca Turin has
compared Edwards’ work to Linnaeus’s Systema
Naturae, published in 1735, which revolutionised
the classification of living organisms. Turin
called Edwards’ work ‘the perfume equivalent’,
recognising its historical significance and its
impact on the perfume world.
In 2024, Edwards published his latest work, The
American Legends: The Evolution of American
Fragrances, an ambitious project covering the
history of American perfumes from 1752 to the
present day. The book, featuring a foreword by
Leonard A. Lauder of Estée Lauder, highlights
the unique contributions American perfumers
have made to the global fragrance landscape.
To celebrate the launch, the Lauder company
released a set of reimagined classic perfumes
under The Legacy Collection, showcasing the
lasting influence of iconic scents.
Edwards’ ability to chronicle the evolution
of fragrance while also advancing the industry
through classification and education has made
him a true icon in the world of perfume. His
legacy is not only one of scholarship but also
one of innovation, helping to bring clarity to an
art form that has historically been steeped in
mystery. CBM
summer fragrances, as well as expert
tips on how to make fragrance last in
the sticky season.
WHAT ARE YOUR
FAVOURITE SCENTS
FOR THIS SUMMER?
For women, it has to be Gin Fizz by
Lubin. It’s practically tailor-made for
summer and is a true perfume icon
– it was originally created in honour
of Grace Kelly in 1955. It features
fresh green notes and citrus fruits,
feminised by a delicate bouquet of
jasmine, rose absolute and the star
of the show: aromatic galbanum.
Wearing it feels like stepping into a
beautiful garden breeze!
For men, it’s a dead heat between
Viking by Creed and Honour Man
by Amouage. Viking, as an aromatic
fougere, is perfect for daytime wear,
while Honour Man, with its blend of
spice and woods, is ideal for a warm
summer’s night.
It’s worth noting that all these
fragrances are handmade, and you
can really sense that craft and artistry
firsthand when holding any of these
beautiful creations.
FEATURE
AND YOUR EVERGREEN
SUMMER FRAGRANCE?
That’s an easy one for me: L’Humaniste by
Frapin. I’m a citrus fan as it is, but this citrus
really stands out to me. It’s incredibly fresh
with lots of lemon and bergamot, yet it has
a rich depth that feels so inviting. I don’t
think I’ll ever be bored of wearing it.
DO WE NEED TO RETHINK
FRAGRANCE APPLICATION
DURING THE WARMER
MONTHS?
Summer presents a unique set of
challenges for fragrance wearers. Direct
sunlight and heat can be unforgiving, and
many of us switch to fresh scents, which
are often more delicate and naturally more
volatile. As a result, we need to compensate
to extend the scent’s longevity. I find that
two or three spritzes behind the head help
keep the fragrance trailing with every turn.
To maximise its hold, layering the
perfume with QV Lotion is the best trick.
Moisturisers act as fixatives, binding the
fragrance to the skin for longer-lasting wear.
HOW SHOULD WE STORE
FRAGRANCES?
Heat and light are a perfume’s worst
enemies, so it’s essential to follow the
golden rule: store your fragrance in a cool,
dark place. Keep in mind that a shelf that
works well for winter storage might not be
ideal for summer. In this instance, you
might even think about storing your
perfume in its original casing. For
many niche brands, the packaging or
presentation box is an extension of the
fragrance experience and looks beautiful as
part of a vanity table ensemble.
IS WEARING FRAGRANCES
IN SUMMER MORE
IMPORTANT THAN IN
WINTER?
It’s like asking, “Is a glass of wine more
important to you in summer?”. Probably
not. But on a scorching day, are you more
likely to reach for an aromatic Riesling or a
juicy Rioja? Ninety-nine times out of 100, it’s
the Riesling. The point is, the importance of
the thing itself is secondary to the versatility
we can explore within it. CBM

FOR MORE THAN 40 YEARS SISLEY PARIS
HAS REDEFINED BEAUTY AND SKINCARE.
DISCOVER WHY THIS FAMILY-RUN BRAND
REMAINS THE CRÈME DE LA CRÈME OF
LUXURY BEAUTY HOUSES.
When it comes to luxurious beauty
products that combine the best
of nature and science, Sisley Paris
stands in a league of its own. Founded in 1976
by Hubert d’Ornano and his wife Isabelle,
Sisley has grown into one of the world’s leading
luxury beauty brands.
Today, the company is still proudly familyowned
and operated, with Isabelle d’Ornano
as the creative director and her son Phillipe
d’Ornano running the business. What started
as a small perfume company has now
Sisley Paris Phyto-Noir Mascara
in Deep Black, $100
Sisley Paris Ligne Noire
Eyeliner, $95
blossomed into a global empire that continues
to innovate in skincare, makeup, haircare
and fragrance.
What truly sets Sisley Paris apart is its
commitment to phyto-cosmetology, an
innovative approach that harnesses the
power of plants for skincare and beauty.
Sisley’s team of chemists, pharmacists,
engineers, botanists and biologists work
in tandem to uncover the most efficacious
ingredients and effective formulations for each
of their product lines.
A COMMITMENT TO
BOTANICAL SCIENCE
Sisley’s approach to beauty is rooted in a
deep understanding of nature’s potential.
Although there are more than 600,000 plant
species in the world, only 300,000 have been
identified to date and less than 20 percent
have been scientifically studied. Plants, trees
and flowers hold immense potential in terms of
regeneration, protection and healing. Sisley’s
team of scientists studies both terrestrial and
marine plants to identify those with the most
potent properties.
One of their iconic skincare ranges, Sisleÿa,
took over 10 years to develop and contains
more than 50 key natural ingredients – derived
from a flower, stem, leaf, root, seed or fruit – in
its complex formulations.
From sourcing to extraction, every step in
Sisley’s process is meticulously crafted. The
origin of each plant, its harvest date and
extraction technology are all considered to
ensure the highest efficacy.
Whether it’s wild or cultivated, the plant’s
biodiversity and sustainability are prioritised.
Two notable ingredients include Centella
asiatica, sourced from the wilds of Madagascar
for its beneficial skin-loving molecules, and
Black Rose, the petals of which contain an
abundance of antioxidant polyphenols and
astringent tannins. These petals are harvested
during the early flowering stage to prevent
over-exposure to the sun’s rays which can
damage those molecules.
BEAUTY
BEYOND SKINCARE
In 2018, Sisley Paris made headlines in the beauty
world by launching their Hair Rituel collection,
pioneering a concept that hair care should be
treated as an extension of skincare.
Sisley Paris has also blurred the lines between
skincare and makeup, ensuring that every
product does more than just beautify. Their
makeup collection is infused with powerful skincare
ingredients, so each application helps to nourish
and improve the skin while providing impeccable
coverage and long-lasting wear. One of their
newest launches, the Phyto-Rouge Shine,
is packed with lip-care ingredients, providing
intense hydration and comfort alongside its
stunning colour.
The Phyto-Blanc Cushion Foundation is another
standout, offering coverage that hydrates and
improves the appearance of the skin over time,
while the Phyto-Noir Mascara not only lengthens
and thickens lashes but also strengthens them
with continued use. For those who love precision
in their eye looks, the Phyto-Noir Eyeliner delivers
ultra-fine lines that dry instantly, thanks to its finely
tuned applicator.
Beyond beauty, Sisley Paris is committed
environmental impact. More than 80 percent of
their production sites are ISO 14001 certified,
and their main facility has reduced its carbon
footprint by 93 percent. Sisley is also focused on
minimising waste, with efforts towards refillable
Oh,
honey!
DISCOVER HOW
GUERLAIN’S HONEY-
POWERED SKINCARE
LINE IS MAKING A
DIFFERENCE – FOR
YOUR SKIN AND
THE WORLD’S BEE
POPULATION.
For centuries, honey has been revered
not only as a sweet treat but also as a
powerful ingredient for health and beauty.
As far back as 3000 BC, the ancient Egyptians
recorded the use of honey in their skincare
routines. This golden substance was prized
for its ability to heal, hydrate and rejuvenate
the skin – and these benefits have stood the
test of time.
Luxury fragrance and cosmetics house
Guerlain has long embraced the extraordinary
properties of honey – and, of course, the bee
– as a symbol of their commitment to nature,
beauty and sustainability. Since 1853, the bee
has been the emblem of the House of Guerlain,
and its honeycomb design is a feature on
many of their iconic fragrance bottles. But the
connection to bees goes much deeper than
just design – it’s at the heart of their innovative
skincare and environmental initiatives.
BEAUTY
THE SCIENCE
BEHIND
HONEY’S
BEAUTY
BENEFITS
Guerlain’s passion for bees and honey is
more than symbolic. Backed by extensive
research, the brand’s team of scientists has
leveraged honey’s rich content of fructose,
glucose, proteins, amino acids, vitamins,
enzymes and minerals. All these natural
components make honey a powerful
ingredient for skincare, offering hydration,
revitalisation and healing properties.
In 2010, Guerlain introduced their
Blackbee Repair Technology, a revolutionary
innovation in skincare that harnesses the full
potential of honey’s nourishing properties. The
company sources this honey from bees living
on the pristine French island of Ouessant,
known for producing some of the purest
honey in the world. In recent years they have
also been using honey varieties from parts of
Corsica, Greece and Finland.
Guerlain’s Abeille Royale range, powered
by Blackbee Repair Technology, and enriched
with royal jelly, includes a wide variety of
products designed to smooth, firm and
hydrate the skin. These include the Day Cream,
Double R Renew and Repair Serum and the
popular Advanced Youth Watery Oil.
Recently, Guerlain expanded the Abeille
Royale line to include haircare products,
blending the power of honey and royal jelly
to nourish both the scalp and hair. The Abeille
Royale Shampoo, Scalp & Hair Youth Oil and
Repair Mask are just a few of the luxurious
hair products that have taken honey’s benefits
beyond skincare.
GUERLAIN’S
COMMITMENT
TO BEE
CONSERVATION
As Guerlain deepened their exploration into
the benefits of honey, they also recognised
a critical issue: the rapid decline in bee
populations worldwide. Bees are essential
to the health of our ecosystems, pollinating
flowers and plants that sustain much of
our food supply. In response, Guerlain
launched the Bee Conservation Programme
in 2011, in partnership with UNESCO. This
initiative focuses on protecting and restoring
bee populations through education and
conservation efforts.
One of the standout components of this
initiative is Bee Schools, which educate
children around the world about the
importance of bees and how to protect them.
Since 2021, these programs have expanded
globally, with a dramatic increase in the
number of Bee Schools in Australia, where
the initiative has a waiting list of schools eager
to participate.
In 2020, Guerlain also introduced Women
for Bees, a global program aimed at teaching
women how to become beekeepers and
restore bee populations in their communities.
This program not only helps protect bees but
also empowers women by providing them
with valuable skills and contributing to the
economic development of their regions. So far,
Women for Bees has been rolled out in France,
Spain, Mexico, Japan and Cambodia, with
more countries set to follow.
Guerlain’s bee conservation efforts are
further highlighted by their involvement in the
UN’s World Bee Day, celebrated every year on
May 20th; each year over $1,000,000 is raised
to support bee preservation efforts and further
conservation work worldwide. CBM
WHAT HAIR COLOURS ARE
TRENDING AS WE HEAD
INTO SUMMER?
We’re seeing a lot of soft pastel tones, warm
coppers, golden blondes and dimensional
brunettes. These colours bring warmth and
vibrancy, perfect for the sunnier months. Lived-in
balayage and sun-kissed highlights are also big
trends right now. They create a natural, radiant
look that mimics the way the sun naturally
lightens your hair. These colour techniques are
great for adding depth and dimension.
WHAT ARE SOME OF
THE NEW HAIR COLOUR
TECHNIQUES WE SHOULD
KNOW ABOUT?
At The Salon by Ash Croker, we’re perfecting
the Liberty technique, which allows for seamless
blending of colour with less maintenance. It’s
ideal for creating multi-dimensional shades
that last longer between appointments. We
also focus on personalised formulations that
enhance hair health and shine.
IS COLOURING YOUR HAIR
BAD FOR ITS HEALTH?
When done correctly by a professional using
high-quality products, colouring doesn’t have
to be damaging. At Salon by Ash Croker, we
use nourishing treatments during and after
ECONOMICAL WAYS FOR
CLIENTS TO MAINTAIN
THEIR COLOUR BETWEEN
APPOINTMENTS?
We offer root touch-up services and partial
maintaining your colour between full
appointments. We also recommend colour-safe
shampoos and at-home toning treatments to
extend the life of your colour and prevent fading.
Little tweaks like these can make a big difference
in maintaining your colour for longer.
SHOULD YOU MODIFY YOUR
HAIR COLOUR AS YOU AGE?
Absolutely! As our skin tone changes with age,
softer, warmer shades tend to be more flattering.
Subtle highlights or lowlights can add dimension
while avoiding harsh contrasts, keeping the look
natural and elegant.
IF SOMEONE WANTS TO
TRANSITION TO GREY, WHAT’S
THE BEST WAY TO SOFTEN
Menopause
A new
conversation
THE CONVERSATION AROUND MENOPAUSE
IS GROWING LOUDER, BACKED BY
INCREASING AWARENESS AND POLICIES
THAT ARE CHALLENGING DECADES OF
SILENCE AND MISINFORMATION.
For generations, menopause has been a
topic few women dared to talk about openly;
an unavoidable stage in life that society taught
us to simultaneously dread and ‘deal with’.
Despite being experienced universally by middle-aged
women, many women are unprepared for their journey
into menopause – which isn’t surprising, really,
considering this important area of women’s health has
been woefully neglected in both medical research and
product development.
But things are changing. Menopause is finally stepping
into the spotlight. It has become one of the most talked
about health topics and is now being recognised as the
urgent matter of public policy that it is.
The recent Australian Senate Inquiry into ‘Issues related
to menopause and perimenopause’ is paving the way
for greater understanding and support for women. It’s
clear: this is not just a personal health issue, but a national
health priority.
For women approaching or experiencing menopause, it’s
no longer something to suffer through in silence. There are
more resources, conversations and treatments available to
help navigate this stage than ever before.
FEATURE
BEYOND THE HOT FLASHES:
WHAT REALLY HAPPENS
DURING MENOPAUSE
Menopause marks the end of a woman’s
reproductive years, but it’s so much more
than the end of periods. It usually happens
between the ages of 45 and 55, though
perimenopause – the transitional phase
leading up to menopause – can start as early
as a woman’s mid-30s.
During this time, levels of oestrogen and
progesterone, the hormones that have
regulated so much of a woman’s body for
years, begin to drop. This hormonal decline
doesn’t just signal the end of fertility, it sets
off a cascade of changes throughout the
body.
The symptoms can range from the familiar
hot flushes and mood swings to brain fog,
sleep disturbances and vaginal dryness.
Less well-known symptoms include heart
palpitations, joint pain, hair loss and tinnitus.
Menopause also brings with it significant
changes to skin, hair and body composition.
Weight gain, particularly around the
abdomen, is common, as is a loss of muscle
mass and strength. Many women also notice
changes in their hair texture and increased
dryness of their skin.
It’s not just about hormones. Menopause
is a complex process that affects nearly
every system in a woman’s body. Oestrogen,
in particular, has far-reaching effects on
the body. It influences how the body uses
calcium, maintains cholesterol levels in the
blood, and protects against cardiovascular
diseases. The decline in oestrogen levels
and its association with accelerated bone
loss and decreased bone mineral density
are well established. It has also been linked
to increased risk of cardiovascular disease,
diabetes and some cancers
Mental health can take a hit, too, with
as many as 68 percent of women going
through perimenopause developing
depressive symptoms. Anxiety can creep
in as well, adding to the rollercoaster of
emotional and physical changes happening
during this time. While there are few studies
about anxiety and perimenopause, some
evidence finds the incidence of anxiety
disorder in menopausal women is as high
as 25 percent. Changes in physical health,
such as thyroid issues or sleep disturbances
due to night sweats, can also contribute to
anxiety and depression.
A 2023 report from health fund HCF
found more than 70 percent of Australian
women aged 45 and over do not feel well
informed or prepared for menopause and its
symptoms.
‘In Australia, while there is increasing
awareness among women about common
menopause symptoms like hot flushes and
brain fog, understanding of more complex
aspects – such as genitourinary syndrome
of menopause (GSM) [which includes
vaginal dryness, painful intercourse and
incontinence] and the effects of oestrogen
deficiency on the brain, cardiovascular
system, gut microbiome and skin is minimal,’
says Dr Judy Craig, medical director of
Natural Looks Cosmetic Medicine in
Perth. ‘Also, few women are aware that
perimenopause may begin as early as
35 years of age and present with symptoms
of anxiety, impaired cognition, depression
and insomnia.’
Dr Craig says while there is an increase
in awareness of the need for Menopausal
Hormone Therapy (MHT), amongst
women, many women still leave their GP
appointment without a prescription and
continue to suffer.
‘Improving education and creating more
open dialogues about menopause could
help bridge these gaps, enhancing both
understanding and support for women
navigating this stage of life,’ she says.

BUSTING
MYTHS ABOUT
HORMONE
THERAPY
‘There are 3.28 million Australian women aged
40-59 years old today going through varying stages
of perimenopause and menopause,’ says Dr Liz
Golez, GP-obstetrician and principal cosmetic
doctor at Lift Aesthetics in Sydney. ‘Twenty-eight
percent of women will experience severe vasomotor
symptoms such as hot flushes (the hallmark of
menopausal transition/perimenopause and early
postmenopause). Despite available safe treatments
(hormonal MHT or non-hormonal therapies), more
than 85 percent of Australian women bothered by
these symptoms fail to receive approved therapy.
‘Genitourinary syndrome of menopause (vaginal
dryness, vulvovaginal atrophy, itching, laxity,
and incontinence) affects 50 percent of postmenopausal
women but only seven percent are
prescribed oestrogen therapy.’
For years, hormone replacement therapy (HRT)
was the go-to treatment for menopause symptoms
– until one 2002 study created mass confusion.
‘The 2002 Women’s Health Initiative (WHI)
study was reported as showing a link between
HRT and breast cancer,’ says Dr Ginni Mansberg,
an Australian GP and television presenter with
a special interest in menopause and women’s
health. ‘Sure, it did – for women with an average
age of 63 when starting synthetic high-dose HRT.
The quantum of risk? For every 10,000 women on
a placebo, we saw 30 breast cancers, but we saw
38 in the takers of HRT. Not a big increase. If you
took the group of women who started taking HRT
before age 60, there was no increase in risk. But the
finer details were just missed by reporters.
‘After this, journalist Barbara Seaman wrote The
Greatest Experiment Ever Performed on Women:
Exploding the Estrogen Myth. The prevailing view
became that taking HRT is deadly and basically
an indulgent beauty treatment, that to ask for
it showed weakness. Women shut up. Doctors
stopped learning about menopause and the whole
thing fell under the cone of silence.’
This misinformation has led to decades of
confusion and fear around a treatment that
could actually help many women. In fact, modern
research shows that bioidentical oestrogen therapy
can reduce the risk of breast cancer and other
serious conditions when managed carefully.
Dr Judy Craig says, ‘A large barrier to positive
action to address the medical and economic
consequences of oestrogen deficiency
(menopause) is a reluctance of organisations,
including medical advisory bodies and
governments, to embrace the latest research
data showing the positive health benefits of
menopausal hormonal therapy (MHT). ‘
She argues that only by improving awareness,
increasing research funding and fostering open
dialogue can we begin to address the gaps in
menopause care and support as well as the
broader economic and social costs associated
with menopause.
‘For change to occur, I believe we need
more women in all aspects of management,
government, research and education at an
executive level and we need them to be
informed on the issues facing menopausal
women and be aware of the latest research
and economic impact,’ she stresses. ‘Increasing
public and government awareness may in time
precipitate change.’
MEDICAL
MISOGYNY:
WHY WOMEN’S
HEALTH HAS BEEN
OVERLOOKED
Menopause has long been marginalised as a health
concern, deemed insignificant when compared with
other medical conditions. It can be argued this stems
from societal tendencies to undervalue women’s health
issues, particularly those related to ageing.
‘Historically, women’s health issues have been
neglected, trivialised and underfunded,’ says Dr
Craig. ‘While many are familiar with how the concept
of “hysteria” was used to dismiss and pathologise
women’s challenges in the 18th and 19th centuries, they
may be shocked to realise that before 1993 women
were rarely included in clinical trials, leading to a
lack of proven data on the effects of many drugs and
treatments on women.
‘In addition, there has been little investment in
research into women’s health. A report from McKinsey
and company stated that approximately one percent
of healthcare research and innovation (2021) was
invested in female-specific conditions beyond
oncology. This neglect of women’s health research
has also led to an ignorance of the prevalence of
the medical, psychological and economic impact of
menopause on women. In 2017 a review of the literature
found that there were few studies assessing the impact
of menopause transition on women’s careers. Studies
addressing the economic impact of menopause
transition have predominantly been published
since 2022.’
According to a 2023 perspective in Nature Ageing,
less than one percent of published studies of the
biology of ageing considered menopause. This gap in
research translates to gaps in women’s health care.
‘Menopause is inextricably intertwined with ageing in
female individuals,’ lead author Fabrisia Ambrosio, PhD,
shared in an interview with Harvard Medical Magazine.
‘On average, females will live about a third of their
lives postmenopausal. We lack data to understand how
menopause affects ageing and how it might contribute
to disease or age-related declines. In preclinical models,
it’s something that we just haven’t effectively addressed,
and so we haven’t been able to study it well.
‘The science has so much catching up to do.
Hundreds of years of research studies have been
dominated by male animal models and male humans.’
FEATURE
A NEW AGE
OF MENOPAUSE
AWARENESS
Governments across the world are beginning
to recognise menopause as an urgent matter of
public policy.
In the UK, where menopausal women are
believed to be the fastest-growing workplace
demographic, more than 500 workplaces have
been certified as ‘menopause-friendly’. Antidiscrimination
laws that include menopausal
status have also been bolstered, with employers
now legally obliged to make ‘reasonable
adjustments’ for women going through
menopause.
In November 2023 the US government
created a Women’s Health Research Initiative to
determine gaps and infuse new funding, the
first tranche of which is US$100 million. Further,
a new bill, the Menopause Research and Equity
Act of 2023, has been presented to Congress to
ensure commitment to ongoing research related
to menopause, perimenopause or mid-life
women’s health.
In February 2023 the Australian Government
established a National Women’s Health Advisory
Council to examine the systemic issues impacting
gender inequities in health outcomes and
improve Australia’s health system for women
and girls. The council will provide strategic
advice to the government after looking at the
healthcare offered in areas such as menstruation,
reproductive healthcare, menopause, medical
consent and pain management.
‘As the awareness of the economic impact
is very recent, it will take time to translate into
affirmative action in many nations,’ says Dr
Judy Craig. ‘I believe that the UK has led the
way in this regard. The UK government passed
the Menopause and the Equality Act in 2010
which details how workers may be impacted by
menopause and outlines the legal obligations
that employers have under the Act. On 6 March
2023 the Minister appointed Helen Tomlinson as
the Government’s DWP Menopause Employment
Champion. Tomlinson’s aim is to educate
women and encourage employers to sign the
Menopause pledge. This is an important step in
the process of raising awareness and supporting
women in the workforce whilst they navigate the
transition to menopause and then manage postmenopausal
changes for life.’
HOW
AESTHETIC
CLINICS ARE
GETTING
INVOLVED
Interestingly, aesthetic clinics are emerging as an
unexpected source of support for menopausal
women. As menopause accelerates the ageing
process – manifesting as sagging skin, loss of
elasticity and increased dryness – many women
turn to cosmetic treatments for help.
‘Menopause care aligns seamlessly with the
mission of aesthetics and anti-ageing clinics,
which focus on addressing the signs and effects
of ageing,’ says Dr Judy Craig. ‘The hormonal
changes associated with menopause, particularly
oestrogen deficiency, contribute to accelerated
skin ageing through collagen degradation.
By offering treatments that address both the
hormonal imbalances and their aesthetic
consequences, clinics can provide more
comprehensive care and significantly benefit
their clients.
‘In addition to facial treatments, many devices
used for addressing facial ageing, such as
radiofrequency or laser therapies, have been
adapted to treat vaginal changes associated with
menopause. Both areas experience similar issues;
loss of mucosal and skin elasticity and thickness,
and collagen degradation, making it possible to
use these technologies to address concerns in
both domains.’
As the conversation around menopause
grows, one thing is clear: women deserve better
care, more research and a louder voice in this
conversation. Menopause isn’t the end – it’s
the start of a new chapter. And with the right
resources and support, it’s a chapter every
woman can and should feel empowered to
embrace. CBM
