Eight books. One wine. And a brilliant lifestyle magazine.
Not content with making fine wines, the Bruce Jack team
also produce Jack Journal - along with a collection of
brilliant designers and gifted writers who, they say, practise a
long-form art of writing where context trumps sound-bites, a
magazine they describe as a gorgeous, beautifully crafted,
long-lasting, collectable magazine, at a time of rushed, massproduced
things designed to break, wear out and be ugly.
It’s a lifestyle mag ... the latest filled with everything from
indigenous medicinal plants to regenerative agriculture,
from the brilliance of beetles to how blisters felled a walker
on the Camino Santiago. Read it with a glass of
Bruce Jack Reserve Stream of Consciousness - a
hedonistic nose of chocolate-smothered purple plums,
framed by vanilla and Indian spices, with note of black and
red forest fruit, brambles and white pepper.
The mag’s R140, the wine R150, from brucejack.com
Two wickedly thrilling reads. Steve Cavanagh’s Witness 8 opens with a murder.
One witnessed by nanny and housemaid Ruby Johnson who knows the killer…
and anonymously calls it in to the police. Open and shut case. But Ruby lied.
An innocent man has been set up. And it’s up to ex-conman-turned-lawyer
Eddie Flynn to find out the truth. Great characters, killer twists. Headline • A
hit-and-run turns out, after the chief medical examiner discovers some puzzling
inconsistencies, to be murder, with the victim severely tortured before death.
It’s the first, but not last, murder of a twisted, clever killer, now on the radar of
Detective Robert Hunter. The Death Watcher. It’s Chris Carter, so you know it’s
going to be twisted, with a gut-wrenching twist. Simon and Schuster
held at the Mbombela Stadium! Fans came from far and wide to
watch the game, and with a final score of 48-7, were not disappointed.
It was also Eben Etzebeth’s 128th capped game, and a tear or two were
shed at his heart-warming speech. All in all, a night to remember.

ou’d be wrong. Sheer
determination and true grit are
words that are nearer the mark
when describing this Lowveld farm
girl, whose only goal is to make
her mark as a world champion.
Alicia has loved sport since an early
age, participating in as many different
events as possible. Hard work, lots of
training and a dedicated coach earned
Alicia her first provincial colours in
primary school, along with armfuls of
medals in athletics and cross-country.
“My whole life revolved around sport.
I had never even thought about a
life doing anything else,” she says.
“Unfortunately, due to the financial
implications involved, that dream
faded when I was encouraged to
pursue a more ‘practical’ career path.”
Alicia decided to swap the small-town
life for the big city lights and headed
to Johannesburg. With a degree in
live performance under her belt, she
got involved in the entertainment
industry, doing part-time modelling for
top SA fashion designers and landing
roles in Isidingo and a number of local
musician’s music videos. In 2010, she
started RuggaChick Productions,
becoming one of SA’s first YouTube
vloggers and securing none other
than SA Rugby as her first client. Within
a few months, Alicia was South Africa’s
leading YouTube reporter, with over
1000 000 views.
Alicia had found her groove and was
working with some of the biggest
digital agencies in the country. She
was given the opportunity to run
an award-winning digital agency in
London, but declined as she did not
want to leave South Africa or her
family. A wise decision, as it turned out.
On September 17, 2015, the Rugby
World Cup had just kicked off when
she received a devastating phone
call from home. “It was the most
shocking news, my parents had been
in a brutal farm attack,” she recalls.
“My life changed in that instant. I had
almost lost both my parents, whom I
saw so little of due to me becoming
career-driven and obsessed with
being successful. So I decided to go
back home.”
Settling in quickly, Alicia started
helping her dad with the farmwork,
learning the ropes firsthand and
getting into the swing of family and
farm life. “My mother is also an avid
runner, and after recovering from the
farm attack, said she wanted to start
running again. I wanted to support
her in that, so I started driving her
to events and races. To keep myself
occupied while waiting for her, I
entered the fun runs and soon realised
how weak and unfit I was. I started
training, and while the sessions weren’t
long, they were gruelling. I also started
actively pulling my weight physically
on the farm, driving tractors with
massive 20-tonne trailers.”
Training went from strength to
strength and Alicia turned her gaze
back towards her first love. She started
with something she had always aspired
to, competing in a Warrior Race. She
got a small team together to take
part in her first-ever obstacle course
race (OCR), then raised the bar to do a
Spartan Race later on that year. “That
was the biggest eye-opener ever,” she
says. “I almost died doing that race, due
to my unpreparedness and not being
close to the level of fitness you need
to take part in something as tough as
the OCR.”
Alicia’s training intensified after that,
and the following year she cut her
team down to two. “I was working hard,
but nowhere near hard enough,” she
says. “I realised that when I did my first
Elite Warrior Race. I was nowhere close
to the fitness level of my competitors.
And that was the wake-up call I
Alan and Estelle Bullen with Alicia at KMI airport
Alicia with some of her medals
needed. I had a serious chat with
myself about my future goals. I knew
that if I wanted to be the best, I had to
train like the best.”
It was soon after this that Alicia
achieved her first podium place, which
gave her the motivation to work
even harder. Then Covid hit and the
world shut down, a massive shock
to her system. “From a huge high to
a devastating low, every event I had
been training for was cancelled,” she
says. “It took me a long time to get my
mind around the concept of training
without having a specific goal in mind.
To focus on being the best I could
be for me, not for any one race or
competition. Winning my first Warrior
Race after having Covid myself was the
start of everything for me. OCR was
back on the map and I smashed my
first big goal in 2022 with two big wins,
then in 2023, the IFBB [International
Fitness and Bodybuilding Federation]
World Championships came along,
and I thought it couldn’t get any better.
I was over the moon!”
This year topped all expectations. Alicia
achieved first place in the Sunfest
Africa Speedfit Fitness Challenge and
was the only South African invited
to Saudi Arabia as an ambassador, to
take part in the Tough Mudder Infinity
Endurance Series. The cherry on the
cake, however, was being officially
capped and getting her Protea colours
in August. In November, she is once
again heading to foreign shores to
represent South Africa in the World
Championships.
It’s not all glitz and glam, though - this
lifestyle doesn’t come easy. “This is
what I do full-time, it’s my job,” she says.
“I get up at the same time every day
and ‘go to work’. I train hard, for around
six hours, six days a week. I don’t have
a secure income; unfortunately, my
chosen sports are not well known and
so are not government-funded, despite
me bringing back so many medals for
my country. I am extremely grateful
to my sponsors, and my parents have
played a huge role in my success. It’s
definitely not a luxurious lifestyle, but
on the flipside, I do what I love. I’ve
come a long way, I’m smashing my
goals and I’m in in the best physical
and mental shape of my life.”
Alicia laughs as she pivots, swinging
her green and gold jacket over her
shoulder with pride. “This jacket is
earned, you know, it’s not something
just anyone can wear! It comes
with blood, sweat and tears, and
exceptionally hard work.” One thing is
for sure, the hard work has been worth
it - the Protea jacket sits well on her
shoulders, as if she was born to wear it.
summer-
Ready!
Those long, lazy days at the pool, in the bush or on the
beach are almost here, which means it is time to adjust your
beauty routine for Summer-ready skin, hair and sun care.
Lightweight and oil-free
During the Summer, your skin tends to
produce more oil, so it’s a good idea to
switch to lighter, oil-free moisturisers.
Opt for gel or water-based formulas
that absorb quickly and don’t clog
pores. Ingredients like hyaluronic acid
are excellent for providing lightweight
hydration without a greasy finish,
helping to balance moisture levels
without contributing to breakouts.
For sensitive skin, using fragrancefree
and non-comedogenic products
will also help prevent irritation in the
Summer heat.
Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate
One of the simplest but most important steps to prepare for Summer is staying
hydrated. Hot weather can cause dehydration, which affects your skin and hair,
making them appear dull and dry.
Drinking plenty of water throughout the day helps to maintain your skin’s elasticity
and moisture levels, keeping it plump and glowing. Hydration also keeps hair
healthy and strong, minimising dryness and brittleness caused by the sun.

Exfoliate often, but be gentle
Exfoliation is the secret to smooth and glowing skin during the Summer. It
removes dead skin cells, unclogs pores
and helps your skin absorb moisturisers and sunscreens more effectively.
However, in Summer, it’s important to exfoliate gently to avoid over-stripping
your skin, which can lead to irritation when exposed to the sun.
Try to exfoliate two to three times a week with a gentle scrub or chemical
exfoliant like glycolic or lactic acid. Follow up with a moisturiser and sun
protection, as exfoliated skin is more sensitive to the sun.
Care for your hair
Summer heat, sun exposure and
chlorine (or saltwater) can take a
toll on your hair, leaving it dry and
damaged. To keep your locks healthy,
start by using a hydrating shampoo
and conditioner formulated for sunexposed
hair. Deep conditioning
treatments, such as hair masks rich in
natural oils like coconut or argan oil,
can help restore moisture and prevent
split ends.
To protect your hair from UV damage,
use a leave-in conditioner or spray with
SPF protection. If you’re spending long
hours outdoors, consider wearing a
wide-brimmed hat or scarf to shield
your hair from direct sun exposure.
A good sunscreen routine
Sun protection is crucial year-round,
but especially during Summer when
UV rays are strongest. Choose a broadspectrum
sunscreen with at least SPF
30 (50 is even better), and don’t forget
to apply it to all exposed areas of your
skin, including often-missed spots like
your ears, neck, hands and the tops of
your feet.
Look after your feet
Summer is the season for sandals and open-toed shoes, so it’s time to give
your feet some attention. Regular exfoliation, such as using a pumice stone
or foot scrub, helps remove dead skin and calluses, leaving your feet soft
and smooth. Follow up with a rich foot cream to lock in moisture, especially
on your heels. Treat yourself to a pretty pedicure and your feet are sorted
for Summer!
Go easy on the make-up
In the heat of Summer, less is more
when it comes to makeup. Heavy
foundations and powders can feel
uncomfortable and clog pores in
hot weather, so switch to lighter
alternatives. Consider using a tinted
moisturiser with SPF for a more
breathable, lightweight finish that still
offers coverage and sun protection.
Waterproof products, like mascara and
eyeliner, are also useful for preventing
makeup smudging or running on
those hot, sweaty days.
Cool off
Facial mists can be a lifesaver in the Summer heat, helping to cool and refresh
your skin on the go. Look for mists that contain soothing ingredients like aloe
vera or rose water, which can hydrate and calm the skin while providing a quick
pick-me-up on hot days. You can even store your mist in the fridge for an extra
cooling effect.
Blueberries, often hailed as a
superfood, are small, vibrant berries
packed with an impressive array of
nutrients. Not only are they delicious,
but they also offer numerous
advantages that contribute to overall
optimum health and well-being.
Low in calories but high in essential
nutrients, a single cup of blueberries
provides significant amounts of
vitamin C, vitamin K and manganese.
Vitamin C is crucial for immune
function and skin health, while vitamin
K plays a vital role in blood clotting
and bone health. Manganese aids in
bone development and metabolism.
Additionally, blueberries are a good
source of dietary fibre, which promotes
digestive health. Fibre also serves as
a prebiotic, feeding beneficial gut
bacteria and contributing to a healthy
gut microbiome.
Making the most of seasonal fruit is easy, the
Lowveld bounty practically drips off the trees.
Plums, oranges and blueberries are in season at
the moment, and all three pack a punch when it
comes to juicy deliciousness and health benefits.
Another standout feature of blueberries is their high antioxidant content.
Antioxidants are compounds that protect the body from oxidative stress and free
radical damage, which can lead to chronic diseases. Blueberries are particularly
rich in anthocyanins, the pigments that give them their deep blue colour. These
antioxidants have been linked to reduced inflammation and a lower risk of heart
disease (regular consumption of blueberries has been associated with overall
improved heart health).
Studies have also shown that blueberries can help lower blood pressure and
reduce LDL cholesterol levels, and the fibre, potassium and antioxidants in
blueberries work together to support cardiovascular health, making them a heartfriendly
addition to any diet.

Easy blueberry ice cream
Ingredients
• 2 cups fresh or frozen blueberries
• 1 cup heavy cream • 1 cup whole
milk • ¾ cup granulated sugar • 1 tsp
vanilla extract • 1 tbsp lemon juice
(optional, for added brightness)
Method
If using fresh blueberries, rinse and
pat dry. For frozen blueberries, thaw
slightly. Blend in a food processor
until smooth. If you prefer a chunkier
texture, pulse a few times. Combine
the blueberry purée, cream, milk,
sugar and vanilla. Stir until the sugar
is dissolved. If using lemon juice,
add it to the mixture for an extra
burst of flavour. Pour the mixture
into a shallow dish or a freezer-safe
container. Cover with a lid or plastic
wrap. Place the container in the
freezer and freeze for about 2 hours,
or until the mixture starts to firm
up around the edges. After 2 hours,
remove the container from the freezer
and stir the mixture with a fork to
break up any ice crystals. Return the
container to the freezer and let it
freeze for another 2-3 hours, or until
the ice cream is firm and scoopable.
Plums are not only delicious, but are a powerhouse of health benefits. These juicy
fruits are rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, making them an excellent
addition to any diet.
One of the standout benefits of plums is their high content of vitamin C, which
supports the immune system, promotes healthy skin and aids in iron absorption.
Plums are also a good source of dietary fibre, which helps with digestion and can
prevent constipation. The fibre in plums also helps regulate blood sugar levels,
making them a great option for those with diabetes.
Plums contain powerful antioxidants, such as anthocyanins and quercetin, which
help protect the body against oxidative stress and reduce inflammation. These
antioxidants also contribute to heart health by improving blood circulation and
reducing the risk of heart disease.
Additionally, plums have a low glycaemic index, meaning they provide sustained
energy without causing significant spikes in blood sugar. This makes them a
satisfying and healthy snack option.
Roasted plums with star anise
Ingredients
• 6 ripe plums, halved and pitted
• 2 tbsp honey, maple syrup or agave
syrup • 2 star anise pods • 1 tbsp fresh
lemon juice
Method
Preheat the oven to 180°C. Grease a
baking dish and arrange the plum
halves evenly, cut side up. Drizzle the
honey or syrup over the plums and
scatter the star anise pods over the top.
Roast the plums for 20-25 minutes until
soft and caramelised. Remove from the
oven and drizzle with lemon juice. Serve
warm, either on their own or with a
dollop of vanilla ice cream. Enjoy!

Citrus fruits, including oranges,
lemons, limes and grapefruits, are
celebrated for their vibrant flavours
and impressive health benefits. Rich
in essential vitamins and antioxidants,
these fruits offer a multitude of
advantages that contribute to overall
well-being.
Citrus fruits are renowned for their
high vitamin C content, a vital nutrient
that supports the immune system,
promotes skin health and aids in the
absorption of iron from plant-based
foods. Just one medium orange
provides over 100% of the daily
recommended intake of vitamin C.
Additionally, citrus fruits are a good
source of dietary fibre, which supports
digestive health and helps maintain a
healthy weight.
The antioxidants in citrus fruits help
combat oxidative stress and protect
the body from free radical damage.
These compounds can reduce
inflammation and lower the risk of
chronic diseases, including heart
disease and certain cancers. For
example, limonoids found in citrus
fruits have been shown to have anticancer
properties. The antioxidants
in citrus fruits also contribute to
improved blood vessel function and
reduced risk of cardiovascular disease.
Citrus fruits are also beneficial for
heart health due to their high content
of vitamin C, potassium and fibre.
Potassium helps regulate blood
pressure by counteracting the effects
of sodium, while fibre helps lower LDL
cholesterol levels. The dietary fibre
in citrus fruits, particularly soluble
fibre like pectin, aids in digestion by
promoting regular bowel movements
and preventing constipation. Fibre
also acts as a prebiotic, nourishing
beneficial gut bacteria and supporting
a healthy digestive system.
Vitamin C is also crucial for collagen
production, which maintains skin
elasticity and reduces the appearance
of wrinkles. The antioxidants in citrus
fruits also protect the skin from
damage caused by UV rays and
pollution, contributing to a healthy,
radiant complexion. The high water
content in citrus fruits helps keep the
body hydrated, and they also support
detoxification processes in the body,
aiding in the elimination of toxins and
promoting overall health.
Orange popsicles
Ingredients
• 2 cups of freshly squeezed orange juice
(about 4-5 oranges) • ¼ cup honey or maple
syrup (adjust to taste) • 1 tbsp lemon juice
(optional, for added tang) • ½ cup water (or
use coconut water for extra flavour)
Method
Combine the freshly squeezed orange juice,
honey (or maple syrup), lemon juice (if using)
and water in a bowl. Stir well until the honey
is completely dissolved. Pour the mixture into
popsicle moulds. If you don’t have moulds,
you can use small cups or ice cube trays,
inserting a wooden stick or plastic spoon
into each. Place the moulds or cups in the
freezer. Freeze for at least 4 hours, or until the
popsicles are solid. To remove the popsicles
from the moulds, run warm water over the
outside for a few seconds to loosen them. Pull
gently on the sticks to release the lollies. Serve
immediately and enjoy!
Tips: For added texture, you can stir in small
pieces of fruit (like diced strawberries or
blueberries) into the mixture before freezing. If
you prefer a slightly less sweet popsicle, reduce
the amount of honey or syrup to taste.

Functions Festivities
Choosing a venue is one of the first things to consider when planning
an event. Whether it’s a birthday, year-end function, kitchen tea or
bachelorette, the perfect venue can make or break the occasion.
RM-GUM1144NH

Birthdays
A birthday is a celebration of life, often filled with friends, family and joyous
energy. The ideal venue should reflect the guest of honour’s personality
and preferences in some way, offering flexibility in decor and allowing
personalisation, so the birthday person’s style shines through. Whether it’s a
whimsical children’s birthday party or an elegant adult gathering, the decor
should set the mood.
For an intimate gathering, a cosy restaurant or garden might work. Larger
milestone birthdays, like 21st or 50th parties, might require a hall or venue
with ample space for dancing, games or entertainment. Consider venues
with built-in entertainment, like sound systems, lighting for DJs, or even a
space for live performers. Some venues may offer additional amenities such
as pool tables, karaoke or an outdoor area for the kids.
Buffets work well for casual birthday parties, while sit-down dinners create
a more formal atmosphere. Find out if your chosen venue will allow you to
offer a set or customisable menu.
Text: MELLISSA BUSHBY
Year-end and Christmas functions
Year-end functions are about closing
the year on a high note, recognising
achievements and fostering a sense
of community among employees.
The venue should strike a balance
between professionalism and
celebration, and be centrally located
to make it easy for all employees to
attend. It should offer ample parking
or access to public transportation.
Depending on the industry, a
venue with a blend of corporate
sophistication and a festive
atmosphere works best in most cases.
Conference centres or hotels with
banquet halls often cater well to
year-end functions, as they provide a
formal setting for speeches, awards
and presentations, followed by a more
relaxed space for dinner, dancing or
mingling.
Ensure the venue has enough space
to accommodate the entire team.
Flexibility is important, as you may
need spaces for different activities
such as the aforementioned dining,
speeches or entertainment. A variety
of catering options, including vegan
or vegetarian menus, is a must, and
it is advisable to find out in advance
if there are any dietary restrictions or
allergies.
Open bar options or drinks packages
should also be considered based
on the company’s preferences and
budget. The same thing applies to
office parties, often held throughout
the year to celebrate a birthday
or specific milestone within the
company.

Bachelorette parties, kitchen teas and
baby showers
These events are all about fun, laughter and creating
memories. The ideal venue should provide a lively,
energetic atmosphere, but also offer enough privacy
for the group to let loose. A private venue is ideal,
whether it’s a separate room in a club, a restaurant or
a secluded outdoor space. This allows the bride- or
mum-to-be and her friends to have an uninhibited
celebration. A chic, glamorous venue with modern
decor adds to the excitement of a bachelorette, while
a more sedate theme suits a kitchen tea. Venues that
offer themed decor or allow customisation are perfect,
as they add to the celebratory feel.
Make sure the venue caters to the group’s interests,
whether it’s a rooftop bar with a dance floor, a private
spa for pampering, a karaoke lounge or an artisan
bakery. Some parties may prefer a venue with space
for games, photo booths or performances.
Cocktail bars, wine-tasting rooms or venues with
customisable drink menus are popular and small plate
or tapas-style dining works well, allowing the group
to mingle while enjoying food and drinks throughout
the event.
Common factors for an ideal venue
While each function has its own unique requirements,
there are a few key aspects every ideal venue should
offer:
• Excellent service: Attentive staff and seamless service
are essential. Make sure the event co-ordinator or
manager knows exactly what is expected to ease the
planning process and ensure things run smoothly.
• Budget consideration: Whether it’s an intimate
birthday gathering or a large year-end function, the
venue should provide good value for money without
sacrificing quality.
• Flexibility: The ability to adapt the venue to the
needs of the event is crucial. From moving furniture,
changing the lighting, adjusting the schedule or
adding an extra guest, flexibility can make the
difference between a (successful) memorable event
and a stressful one.
The ideal venue for any function depends on
balancing the atmosphere, capacity, entertainment
and budget. When these elements align with the
vision of the event, the result is an unforgettable and
happy occasion. Planning carefully, considering the
event’s unique needs and selecting a venue that offers
flexibility and good service will ensure your function is
one to remember.

Inspirational, caring and a go-getter of note,
Stacey-Lee Engelbrecht is changing the world one
tin can, bottle and piece of paper at a time.
After finishing high school, Stacey-
Lee decided to head to the big city,
where she studied psychology and
criminology at Tuks. “After that, I
moved to Cape Town where I had a
brief stint in the yachting industry,”
she says. “I was shocked by the vast
amount of waste produced by the
ultra-wealthy, with no concern for its
environmental impact. This ignited
my interest in waste management.
When I returned to Cape Town, I
participated in community work in
the Masiphumelele Township and felt
a strong urge to make a difference.
Although I didn’t come from privilege, I
knew that to help others, I first needed
to help myself.”
In August 2021, Stacey-Lee visited her
mum in Mbombela and asked her why
she didn’t recycle. “She told me she
didn’t even know what recycling was.
That was my aha moment. After Covid,
my perspective on life changed, and
coming back to the Lowveld made
me realise it was time to start my
brainchild, Green Guru. I extended my
stay by a month, conducted market
research in the area, and by the end
of October, my then-fiancé (now
husband) and I packed up and moved
back to the Lowveld. We haven’t
looked back since.”
Green Guru started with Stacey-
Lee and a single employee with a
Why recycling is so important

small bakkie. Today, there are seven
full-time employees, a 4-tonne
truck, and the original bakkie with
a 4-metre trailer. “We now service
some amazing businesses in the
Lowveld that genuinely care about
their environmental impact.” Green
Guru Solutions is a conscious waste
management company, servicing
both residential and commercial
sectors. “We provide weekly residential
recycling collections in Mbombela
and White River, and we offer on-site
waste management for commercial
businesses. Our services include
waste separation, diversion and waste
reporting.”
Stacey-Lee explains that after
collecting the recyclables, they
support existing supply chains that
bale and transport the materials to
Johannesburg for further processing.
There the items are turned into
new products such as buckets and
dustbins. “Unfortunately, we don’t
have any major local manufacturing
plants (which presents a great
opportunity for any new and
interested entrepreneurs). The
importance of an initiative like Green
Guru is to educate individuals about
waste separation. We are nearing
maximum capacity at our second
landfill, and as consumers, we need to
take responsibility for how and where
we dispose of our waste.” Green Guru
Solutions not only wants to educate
individuals, but also provide a solution
by being your point of contact for all
your waste management needs.
Making a difference is everyone’s
responsibility, and small changes are
a great place to start.
“There are two things I always tell
people,” Stacey-Lee says. “The first
is, when shopping, try to avoid
packaged goods like bananas,
which come in their own natural
‘packaging’. You don’t need to put
them in a single-use plastic bag.
Take your own shopping bags or
ask the store if they have a box for
you - I love this about Food Lovers.
The second is, if you don’t make use
of a recycling service, at least get
into the habit of having two bins at
home - one for wet waste and one
for dry waste. Put all your food waste
into one bin and your dry waste into
the other. This way, when it reaches
the landfill, there’s a lower chance of
contamination, and garbage pickers
Recycling in action
will have a better chance of recycling
what can be recycled.”
The fact is that harmful chemicals and
greenhouse gases are released from
landfill sites, and at the current rate of
waste disposal, we are rapidly running
out of space. In South Africa alone,
an estimated 122 million tonnes of
waste are generated, but only 10% is
recycled, leaving the remaining 90% to
accumulate in landfills.
By reducing the need for new raw
materials, we also decrease the
deforestation, mining, farming
and drilling that would otherwise
damage ecosystems and harm
wildlife. Additionally, by cutting down
on energy use, landfill waste and
incineration, we reduce pollution,
lowering the release of greenhouse
gases into the air and contaminants
into the water.
advertorial
Going on holiday is exciting, but ensuring your home is secure
and your belongings are safe while you’re away can help you
relax even more.
Proper preparation can prevent potential disasters like water damage, security
breaches or coming home to unhappy pets or dead plants. We’ve put together a
comprehensive guide to help you get your home holiday-ready, giving you peace of
mind over the silly season.
Switch off the geyser
Turning off the geyser is one of the easiest ways to save electricity and prevent any
potential problems while you’re away. It’s not necessary for your geyser to heat water
when no one is using it, and in some cases, switching it off can prevent costly repairs
due to malfunctions. This is particularly important in areas prone to load-shedding or
power surges. You can turn it back on as soon as you return, ensuring hot water when
you need it without wasting energy.
Turn off the water supply
A small leak can lead to significant
damage (and cost) if left unchecked,
especially if you’re away for an
extended period. Turning off the
water at the main supply prevents
this from happening. If you’re unable
to turn off the main supply, at
least ensure the washing machine,
dishwasher and other water-related
appliances are disconnected from the
power and water sources. Remember
to check all taps and pipes for leaks
before you leave.
Ensure all doors and
windows seal properly
This might sound obvious, but it’s
easy to overlook a window or side
door. Go through your home room
by room and ensure that all entry
points are securely locked. Don’t
forget small windows, which are
often targeted by burglars for entry.
Installing deadbolts or additional
security locks can also help.
Pool care
If you have a pool, ensure it’s taken
care of while you’re away. Adjust
the chemical levels to prevent algae
build-up and debris accumulation. If
you have a pool cover, put it in place
to keep it clean. If your holiday is
longer, consider hiring a pool service
to maintain it in your absence.

Security systems
If you have a security system, ensure
it’s armed and functioning properly
before you leave. Test all sensors,
the control panel and any security
cameras. If you don’t have a system,
consider temporary solutions like
smart cameras that allow you to
monitor your home remotely. Some
insurance companies also offer
discounted premiums for homes
with monitored security systems.
Pet and plant care
Ensuring your pets and plants
are well cared for is paramount.
Arrange for a pet sitter or ask a
neighbour to check in regularly.
Some pet-sitting services offer the
option of house-sitting as well,
ensuring someone is there to water
plants and feed your animals.
Alternatively, kennels or pet hotels
will look after your animals while
you’re away. For plants, selfwatering
pots or drip systems can
help, but make sure someone can
check in to avoid any surprises.
Inform a trusted neighbour or friend of your plans
If possible, ask a trusted neighbour or friend to keep an eye on your property while
you’re away. Even if your security system is active, having a physical presence checking
in on your home can deter potential break-ins. Leave a contact number in case of
emergencies and let them know how long you’ll be gone.
Unplug appliances
Before leaving, unplug all non-essential appliances. Not only will this save energy, but it
also reduces the risk of electrical fires and damage from power surges. Appliances like
TVs, microwaves and computers can be safely unplugged. If you have any devices that
need to be left on, like a fridge, make sure they’re in good working order.
Outdoor maintenance
A neglected garden can signal
to others that you’re away.
Mow the lawn, trim hedges
and tidy up your outdoor area
before you go. You could also
arrange for a garden service to
take care of things while you’re
gone. Adding a timer to outdoor
lights can give the appearance
that someone is home in the
evenings.
Before you lock up, do a final walkthrough of your home. Ensure that all windows, doors
and gates are secure. Double-check that your water, geyser and appliances are turned
off and your security system is armed. Make sure your pets are safe and that you have
everything you need for your trip. If you are camping, remember to pack a gas stove,
braai grid and cooler boxes.
