© PR4Photos - Father Christmas has lost the presents!
Hello & welcome!
Christmas is a time for giving, forgiving, and opening our
hearts. True love need not be measured by the price of a
gift, but by the intention behind it. Something handmade,
crafted with care and sincerity, often holds more beauty and
meaning than anything money can buy.
Yet, giving isn’t reserved for a season. Every day offers
moments to share our light with others. A smile to a stranger,
a simple conversation with someone you pass by, or a small
gesture of kindness to someone in need - these acts hold
more power than we realise. Instead of offering money to
those less fortunate, perhaps we can give of our time, a meal,
or a warm drink, sharing something that nourishes both body
and soul.
In a world so often swept up in materialism, especially during
this season, we are reminded to pause and reflect. Places like
Cornwall, with its sacred beauty, call for our gratitude. The
land speaks to us, asking us to acknowledge the blessings we
have and to honor the oneness we share with all who walk
its paths. Whether it’s through creativity, business, service, or
simply good will, we recognise that we are all interconnected,
all reflections of the same divine source.
Do unto others as you would have them do unto you;
In giving, we receive. In loving, we are loved. This is not a
sermon, but a way of life - an invitation to live with open
hearts and kind spirits.
May your Christmas be filled with peace, love, and deep joy.
See you in 2025 with love,
COMMUNITY NEWS
Bring in the
Festive Glow
The magic of Christmas lights is
something we all cherish during the
festive season. We’ve come a long way
from the days of using candles to adorn
the Christmas tree.
Today, eco-friendly LED lights are the go-to
choice. Not only do they save on energy
costs and offer greater safety by producing
less heat, but they also allow for more lights
per metre, adding extra sparkle to your
decorations.
Thanks to modern technology, many
Christmas lights now come with a timer
function. This handy feature eliminates the
hassle of reaching behind the tree to turn your
lights on and off. Simply switch them on, and
they’ll automatically turn off after 8 hours, only
to turn back on 16 hours later. It’s as simple as
that - one easy step until it’s time to take them
down after Christmas. Now, that’s convenience!
This timer feature is also available in many
battery-operated Christmas decorations,
giving you even more time to relax and enjoy
the festive season, perhaps with a mince pie in
hand.
Visit Mallett’s Home Hardware to explore over
70 styles of Christmas lighting for both indoor
and outdoor use, including LED characters and
light-up wreaths. Let them help you brighten
your Christmas!
Christmas
News from
Truro BID
We’ve been busy working with
various partners on Christmas
activities, which launch this year on
Friday 22nd November with our
Festive Friday event, featuring Truro’s
Christmas Lights Switch-on at 7pm.
Johnny Cowling and Lucy Start will be
hosting Festive Friday which starts with special
entertainment on the stage in Boscawen Street
from 5pm. Following the big switch-on there will
be celebratory live music until 8.15pm.
On the same day the Truro Christmas Market
opens on Lemon Quay until Christmas Eve,
showcasing local food, drink, arts and crafts in
festive wooden cabins. The Market, which opens
until 9pm on Festive Friday, is hosted by Truro
Farmers Market and Cornwall Event Cabins.
To continue the festivities, The Father
Christmas Parade will be returning on Wednesday
27th November at 6.30pm to coincide with the
first Wednesday Late-Night Shopping. As well as
Father Christmas, dancers, musicians, and circus
performers will be parading around the city centre
in a Jack and the Beanstalk themed parade.
We have invited City of Lights to be represented
at our Father Christmas Parade. City of Lights will
be delivering a full day of bookable workshops at
the Hall for Cornwall for families on Saturday 16th
November. These families will then be invited to
parade their small lanterns as part of the Father
Christmas Parade.
Thank you to Coodes Solicitors for sponsoring
both Festive Friday and The Father Christmas
Parade.
New for this year and part of the city’s festive
markets, we are working with Cornwall Shop
Small and Truro Farmers Market to bring stalls to
Boscawen Street on Wednesdays and Saturdays
from 23rd November. The Boscawen Street
Christmas Markets will feature a wonderful
combination of festive gifts and produce from
local and independent makers, along with some
street food, traffic-free streets and music.
Once again, we are delighted to be supporting
Coppice Theatre so that Father Christmas
can return to the Royal Cornwall Museum.
Taking place on eight dates from Saturday 7th
December, Father Christmas at the Museum
is a festive grotto and storytelling experience
(see page 6 for more details).
With so much going on, we hope that residents
and visitors will come into the city to shop in
person, eat, drink, and enjoy Christmas. For more
details on Truro’s festive events see our advert
opposite and go to: visittruro.org.uk @visittruro.
Finally, our small team at Truro BID wishes you all
a very merry Christmas and happy new year. Truro
businesses, feel free to contact us on 01872 273 999.
NEWS UPDATE
Truro Food Bank
News Update
Truro Foodbank is often asked for
information about the amount of food
we receive and how many people we
feed. The tables below compare 1st
June – 30th August 2024 with the same
period last year to provide answers to
these questions.
Firstly, figures about food coming in:
Findings:
Supermarket drop bins have always been the biggest source of our stock but this has halved.
Other regular sources of donations have also dropped by half overall.
Food inflation remains significant for customers and foodbanks – it costs more now to buy a lot less.
Secondly, figures about people fed:
Truro Foodbank saw a 23% increase in demand this summer, feeding 250 more people than last
year. Unlike traditional foodbanks, Truro allows customers to choose their own food, maintaining
dignity and reducing waste. Many single-person households and those in temporary accommodation,
often with limited cooking facilities, rely on the service. Fresh food from local sources like Cornwall
Food Action, Soul Farm, and Truro Allotments is also distributed when available.
While low income is a major reason for referrals, 30% of households helped had at least one
person in work, compared to 20% nationally. Other reasons for referral included health issues,
insecure housing, and domestic abuse.
To collect food, a referral is required. Visit Truro Foodbank’s website or call the Citizens Advice
helpline on 0808 208 2138 for help.
To support, consider adding extra tins to supermarket donation bins. For information on the real
living wage campaign, email trurofoodbank@gmail.com.
COMMUNITY NEWS
The tale of River
Street, Truro
words by Bert Biscoe
When the first human eyes crested
the ridge and gazed down into the
broad, flat estuarial valley below, they
would have seen two rivers winding
through: the Dowr Ithy (later known as
the Kenwyn) and the Allen (or Alaunos,
meaning Bright Water). A third river, the
Glasteinan (later the Tinney or Staddon),
flowed in from the north, passing under
what is now Tregolls Road and feeding
into Avery’s Creek, where today we find
Trafalgar Roundabout.
Trafalgar Roundabout home for our resident hedgehogs.
The name Truro stems from a Celtic word
meaning ‘Three Rivers.’ In those early days, the
valley was wet and tidal, though as centuries
passed, land was reclaimed and the waters
brought under control. In the 12th century,
a castle was erected - likely by either King
Stephen or Queen Matilda during their civil
A bank was transformed into the Royal Cornwall Museum.
war - on a commanding, defensible hilltop,
the site now occupied by the Crown Court.
The castle stood just below Kenwyn Church,
while the area known as Hendra was used for
jousting and archery. Shakespeare even alludes
to Cornish archers in “Henry V” when the king
asks, on the eve of battle, ‘Art thou of Cornish
crew?’
Also dating from the 12th century, a
Dominican priory stretched across much of
the land between what is now Victoria Square
- once Truro’s bustling port - and Bosvigo
Bridge. This history is echoed in the name of
St Dominic Street. However, in 1536, Henry
VIII dissolved the priory, and its lands fell into
disuse, eventually coming into the possession
of the Boscawen family. By the 19th century, the
Boscawens had sold off most of their holdings
in Truro, paving the way for the Ferris family
to lead the westward expansion of the town,
the fruits of which can be seen most notably in
River Street.
Beneath River Street flows the River Kenwyn.
In 1988, a branch lodged between the pillars
of the old west bridge under Victoria Square,
causing a flood that struck twice within months.
Wesley is said to have preached near the West
Bridge, and in the early 19th century, troops
had to face down rioting miners seeking food
in the same area.
The Ferris family commissioned a young architect
from Truro, Philip Sambello, whose vision greatly
influenced the shape of modern Truro. He
devised a master plan for River Street and
designed many of its buildings, including the
Baptist Church, now home to The Artshop. A
former Congregational chapel was repurposed
as the offices of the Rural District Council, and a
bank was transformed into the Royal Cornwall
Museum.
Interesting facts
about Ivy
words by Anna Cormie -
Assistant Countryside Ranger
Even as winter approaches, common
ivy (Hedera helix) continues to produce
flowers and fruit.
This evergreen plant uses special hairs to cling to
surfaces, enabling it to climb up to 30 meters. Its
juvenile leaves are dark green with 3-5 lobes, while
mature leaves are heart or oval-shaped. Once
mature, ivy becomes self-supporting and blooms
yellow-green flowers in small dome-shaped clusters,
called umbels, from September to November, with
berries ripening between November and January.
Contrary to popular belief, ivy does not harm trees.
It uses them for support but has its own root system,
drawing nutrients from the soil, not the tree. In fact,
ivy is vital to the ecosystem, supporting over 50
Have you
made a will?
Making a will can seem daunting, but it’s
important because there are rules about
what happens to your money, property,
or possessions after you die. Without a
will they may not go to the people or
places you wanted.
It’s a good idea to use a solicitor, or to have one
check a will you draw-up to make sure it’ll have the
effect you want. It’s easy to make mistakes which
could cause problems after your death.
Think about how much money and property you
have and if any possessions are especially important
to you; whether you want anything to go to family
or friends; and what you’d like to happen to the rest
of your assets, such as leaving a gift to charities.
If relevant, you should also decide who should look
after any children under 18. You’ll also need to
decide who will sort out your estate and carry out
your wishes, (known as the executors). It’s common to
appoint two executors. People often choose relatives
or friends, solicitors, accountants, banks, or the Public
Trustee - an official body - to be an executor.
species of wildlife. Its berries, nectar, and pollen
provide essential food for birds and insects during
autumn and winter when other sources are scarce.
Birds benefit from the berries; high fat content,
while insects like hoverflies, bees, and wasps rely
on its nectar and pollen before hibernation. Ivy also
supports caterpillars of moths and butterflies.
Historically, ivy has symbolic significance. The
ancient Greeks and Romans believed wearing
ivy wreaths prevented intoxication. The Roman
god Bacchus was depicted with ivy, and wreaths
were awarded to athletes and poets to symbolize
achievement. Rather than seeing ivy as a nuisance,
appreciate it as a crucial part of the ecosystem with
a rich cultural history.
A will must be made by someone of sound mind,
meaning capable of rational thought and making
and understanding decisions. It must also be drawn
up without pressure from another person in writing
and signed by the person making the will, in the
presence of two witnesses, who must also sign the
document.
As soon as the will is signed, dated and witnessed,
it’s complete. It should be kept in a safe place and
other documents should not be attached to it.
This safe place might be at home, with a solicitor
or accountant, at a bank, or at HM Courts and
Tribunals Service (HMCTS) for safekeeping.
GARDENING
Gardening Tips
for Winter
Plenty of jobs to do in the garden in
November. This is a time to plant spring
bulbs so that your spring colour will
emerge next year.
1. November is the ideal time to plant tulips
in pots and borders for fabulous colour next
spring. Also daffodils, crocuses and other
spring bulbs can be planted.
2. Sow salad on a sunny windowsill to give you
a supply of fresh leaves through winter.
3. Plant up patio pots and windowboxes with
violas, cyclamens and colourful evergreens
like heucheras and heather to give you winter
colour when the weather is dark and gloomy.
4. Lift dahlias once the first frosts have
blackened their leaves. Leave the tubers to
dry, then store them in trays under a layer of
compost to keep them from drying out.
5. Mulch beds with a thick layer of organic
matter, such as garden compost or well-rotted
farmyard manure.
6. Clean bird feeders and fill them with
oil-rich seeds like sunflower hearts and suet
balls to support birds through winter. Keep
bird baths topped up so that birds have
somewhere to drink and bathe.
7. Choose some shrubs with winter colour and
scent eg Christmas box (Sarcococca confusa),
wintersweet (Chimonanthus praecox) and witch
hazel (Hamamelis) all look and smell gorgeous
at this time of year.
events offer warming drinks afterward, including hot
chocolate, tea, or mulled wine, to help you thaw
out.
Make sure to check the details of the event
beforehand. If you’re not a confident sea swimmer,
it’s essential to ensure lifeguards are present, as
not all beaches have them on duty. There may
also be age restrictions, and some locations, like
Perranporth, may even have rules against wetsuitsso
COMMUNITY NEWS
Discovering
Cornwall: My 500-
Mile Wheelchair
Journey
What started as an ambitious idea
last November - to travel 500 miles
around the perimeter of Cornwall
in my electric wheelchair - became
a reality on September 1st, marking
33 years since my accident.
At first, it seemed like a distant goal with
plenty of time to prepare. Over the months,
we established The Cornwall 500, a road trip
without a set route. Our goal was to deliver the
first 50 plaques, which can later be collected
like achievements in an app, creating a new
narrative of Cornwall.
© PR4Photos
a small team of carers and friends, I began
this adventure. Over the next 28 days, I
faced northern winds along the coast, the
lingering warmth of summer, and the early
signs of a cold, wet winter—all within
the course of a day’s journey. Traveling
approximately 25 miles most days, the
equivalent of the distance from Truro to
St Ives, was no small feat in a wheelchair.
Along the way, I towed a replica air ambulance,
collecting donations and raising awareness.
© PR4Photos
I chose to embark on this journey in support of
the Cornwall Air Ambulance, the charity that
saved my life by flying me to the specialist
spinal unit in Salisbury all those years ago. Their
swift response and expert care during those
critical moments not only saved my life but also
gave my family hope when they needed it most
- something I will be forever grateful for.
With the blessings of my family, supporters, and
dignitaries like the Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall,
we set off on September 1st. Accompanied by
© PR4Photos
The support I received was overwhelming.
People honked their horns in encouragement,
called out their names from car windows, and
engaged with me on social media, turning
what could have been a solitary challenge
into a shared experience. Moments like when
young Dresden ran up to donate £1 of his
pocket money were especially heartwarming.
We have just surpassed the £10,000 mark at
the time of writing this, and I am incredibly
thankful to everyone who donated - you are
truly helping to save lives.
During this journey, I visited nearly 300 places -
towns, villages, beaches, and coves—traveled
through 140 different parishes, covered 480
miles, and spoke to thousands of people. I
heard countless stories of how Cornwall Air
Ambulance has touched the lives of others.
This experience has profoundly affected me,
leaving me humbled by the county where I was
born, raised, and privileged to live.
It may have taken me 50 years to explore
Cornwall on such a deep level, but this
incredible challenge is something I will never
forget. Being able to save lives while doing
something I love - there’s nothing more fulfilling.
